Trey is the lead guitarist and lead vocalist for the jamband Phish, who was active from 1983–2004 and reunited in 2009. Trey is also a member of Dave Matthews and Friends.
Dave and Trey likely met on
2.5.93 at Warren Haynes's Ritz Power Jam, where DMB, Warren, Trey, and
John Popper performed
All Along the Watchtower together. The relationship between the two bands solidified in April of 1994, when DMB opened two shows for Phish. Members of DMB and Phish guested with each other a handful of times from 1994–97. In 2001, the day after
Everyday was released, Dave guested at a Trey Anastasio Band show in Richmond, performing
Everyday and three cover songs.
Later that year, Trey joined DMB on a long version of
Lie in Our Graves. In 2003, Dave recruited Trey to add a bit to his solo album,
Some Devil, and since its release, Trey has played as a part of Dave Matthews and Friends and has guested with DMB several times. After his well-publicized arrest for drug possession in 2006, Trey made his return to the stage as a guest with DMB on
8.14.07. He did not collaborate with Dave or the band again, however, until they played a benefit show together on
1.6.18.
