This song has been performed by many artists over the years, perhaps most popularly by Johnny Cash. Dave first covered it at a 1999 tribute to Cash and has said that he thinks of it as a Johnny Cash song, though it was neither written nor originally performed by Cash but rather by Lefty Frizzell in 1959.

Along with Eh Hee, The Maker, Gravedigger, So Damn Lucky, and Stay or Leave, this is one of just six songs that have been played by DMB, Dave & Tim, Dave & Friends, and Dave solo.

As a minor side note, Johnny Cash's versions of the song are all listed as "The Long Black Veil"; however, the song was originally titled without the definite article the, so our listing reflects that original title. The "main lyrics" for this song are from Cash's 1965 recording on the Orange Blossom Special album.
