taping DMB/BHTM tour

dwmaclea@COLBY.EDU Fri Jan 20 15:35:19 1995

I tried to send this the other day, but it hasn't shown up, so I'm trying it
again  :}

I'm planning on taping the 1/28 (Bates College) and possibly 2/2 (UMaine Orono)
shows, and I was wondering if anybody has an idea what to expect as far as
complications caused by the fact that there are two bands/soundboards/sound
guys, etc. Any tips/info would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance...

In case anyone was wondering - My band carbon12 went into the studio over
x-mas and we had a few setbacks (read - hard to work under pressure)
anyway we're going to finish up in a few weeks ('cause we're all
attached to school in some way) so if anyone's interested in a advance copy
- I like my friends on the minarets alot - mail me or cory

DMV?

JPETERS@CENTER.COLGATE.EDU Fri Jan 20 16:04:04 1995

which i'd post again below for show and tell, but i'm not ambitious enough to
figure out how to do it? they said DMV! hee hee (primus does a funny song by
that name, btw)
bottom of the page that read "performers subject to change" or something to
that tune. I take that to mean that they probably listed all the bands that
will be playing there in the next few months and will select the best of those
shows and broadcast them. They'll probably spread them out forever, too, so we
might not get daveband until august. Then again, we might get lucky and see
them soon. I gotta call a friend who has real cable tv and beg him to let me
tape it at his place right now.

teh 20th of feb go on sale tommorrow (jan 21st). the woman i talked to at
ticketbastard told me they go on sale at 10 pm, but i have a feeling that's
supposed to be 10 AM, so give it a shot early. i don't know the # for the
landmark theater, but ticket bastard in syracuse is (315) 472-0700. i hope
everyone way up here in the northern reaches of society can get there on the
20th. The landmark is a really cool venue with very classical looking gilded
stuff all over and a good balcony. no bad seats anywhere, but not very
accessible to groovin' and dancin'. it seats about 3000. good luck and may
the force be with you.

"this song is called jimi thing...your jimi thing is whatever you want it to
be. i'll say this though....boyd has a big jimi thing and mine's not as big as
his. but make it your own...it can be anything you want."--d. matthews

this name thing & some thoughts on cliques

thephal@email.unc.edu Fri Jan 20 17:13:01 1995

I am looking for a good copy of the 11/8/94 show at the Lisner
Auditorium in D.C. I have several Dave tapes and some other stuff that might
be of interest to someone, so if anyone has this show please respond to my
address. Hope to hear from someone soon.
 						Stephen

Just when I thought I could be unique among a large group, there it is, a
note from another Stephen!

Anyway, all this talk about cliquishness has moved me to share my
perspective. I think it started with someone saying that there seems to
be a certain core of people whose posts dominate the list, and that it
can be intimidating for someone who perhaps hasn't been around as long as
others seem to have, or for someone who just doesn't have so much to
say. I can understand this; when a few people seem to know a lot about
DMB & are responsible for the bulk of the posts on Minarets--especially
when they're having such a good time--for those of us who feel a little
more on the outside, the inclination is to feel like there are some who
"belong" more than others.

I think this will be the case in just about any group of substantial
size. However, I don't think that makes Minarets cliquish. If you wanna
see cliques in action, check out alt.society.generation-x. There's some
intelligent posting there, but there's also a lot of silly spam, some
groups of people have adopted their own acronyms & expressions. It's all
with good intentions--I've seen little flaming there--but those are some
damn cliques. The net.gods there act like net.gods. There's a
tight-knit group who contributes something to every discussion, but also
spends inordinate amounts of energy lauding the other members of their
little bunch and passing little inside jokes back and forth. I don't see
that here.

I guess I'm trying to say that I don't think Minarets is cliquish (which
is good, IMO), but as we grow as a mailing list, the potential is there.
It's important that we discuss this before it becomes a problem. I think
a lot of us here share a love for DMB & some other bands, probably like
the idea of trying to achieve peace on some level through music (am I
reaching?), and generally do not wish anyone ill. Though DMB isn't my
favorite band (oh, shit! What did I just do?), the atmosphere here is
time getting into other music. I hope this isn't a complete waste of
bandwidth, but it has been a complete waste of worktime if anyone lets on
to my supervisors what I've been doing for the last hour.

--don't flame unless someone is persistently being an asshole & is here
only to cause trouble
--continue to handle what seem like dumb questions gently. I've been
around rec.music.phish for a while & know as much as I want to about the
band for now, but my first question was reeeeally dumb (and it wasn't
about You Enjoy Myself). No one said anything, & eventually I got a clue
before I posted again.
--keep the peace & general good vibes alive

I gotta go. Thanks for your (virtual) (collective) ear.

eviL? could it be......SATAN?!!!!

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Fri Jan 20 17:35:16 1995

back to my clique post... people, especially my dearest rick, have taken it
out of context... i am not saying that it is evil, i'm not even saying it's
wrong.
when did i say it was evil? i just said i don't feel a part of any clique.
it was more a statement of my overwhelming, over-numberous, and stupid
insecurities that no matter how hard you try to make me feel like i'm
a part of a given situation, i usually feel alienated.

gee, i bet none of you have ever felt that way before......:)

nothing wrong. nobody say it wrong. i don't think there's a clique.

i think there's a few people here i happen to know better than others.
but nothing wrong.

hi everyone. perhaps i should introduce you to the gay bees? then
you'll really be a part of a dumb joke. tee hee.

how could i when i spent 4 days in richmond in december?? when i
well, you're definitely a member of the clique, aren't ya?

and on subconscious bidding from chardy, i thought i share this with

a new song called "cherry girl" about getting laid. i'm trying to
figure out if it's sexist or just a sign that these guys aren't getting
enough.

or both.

but it was a great show. go check them out. if you're as politically
motivated as i am, ignore the lyrics. bounce up and down and all. they're
really good for that.

that's all.

just another memo from ben's cellar...

i was talking to a freind of mine (oh, heaven forbid. rick has freinds.)
and she told me.....get this......

she saw dave band in 1989.

this is no lie. she did. dave band was indeed around in the days that
produced "awsomely 80's."

it was a pre-boyd show at a high-school in c-ville. they played with
something like 10 other bands in a festival that was in the gym.

that's crazy. crazy horse.

i'm not drunk yet. but i'm gonna be in a few hours. so pray that

i made an ass of myself on this and other nets trying in some god awful
manner to compare dave to trey anastasio.

people laughed. HARD. but it was fun.

Cost of the DMB/BHT show. Ponderance.

DMJ@ALPHA.SUNQUEST.COM Fri Jan 20 18:26:41 1995

I almost sent this to MINAREST. Is that a mailing list for people who
can't sleep 'cuz they're too busy spinnin' tapes for newbies like
myself? Really, there are some seriously generous people on this list.
I dig y'all.

Okay. Was doin' some serious butt-wiggling last night here in Tucson
for my fave groovy Arizona band, Major Lingo. You guys would dig'em.
They offer free live tapes to their fans, so I'm just gonna have to send
off some blanks, I think.

Anyway, my point is... the show was at a club here called The Rock, and
I started chatting with the owner. This is the venue that DMB played at
in December... and BHT in November of '93. The owner said he wanted to
get the DMB/BHT tour, but was shocked as hell to find out that it is
$30K. He said that he only paid $3K for BHT a year ago, and only (get
this) $1K for DMB last month. (of course, we're out west, and nobody
has really heard of DMB yet... 500-600 people at the show tho, that was
impressive).

So how/why are they charging 30K for this lineup? Dang...
Is the tour even coming out west? All the dates I've seen thus far have
been east coast.

Re: MINARETS digest 10

MEDICUS@UNIVSCVM.CSD.SCAROLINA.EDU Fri Jan 20 19:42:09 1995

I realize that Mr. Ben Sterling discussed the subject of cliques a few days ago
but this is the first time I've had to read and respond to mail. I tend to
agree with him. I have posted a few times, but mostly Ijust lurk and try and
arrange a few trades. Whenever I do post, it seems to go ignored. Like lets
say for example, I posted a week ago concerning a tape id, not one response or
mention. It appears that there is this group of ten or so that post to each
other via minarets. I think this feeling of cliques restrcits the flow of
ideas. I'm sure that a lot of people have something to say, but don't. It
seems a bit intimidating to post maybe, it was for me. But as you can see i'm
slowly overcoming this fear and getting in on the action. If you think you
have something importatn let everyone else in on your secret and I hope we
can all enjoy it. have fun and a nice day.

this may hurt me. ....

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Fri Jan 20 20:05:45 1995

wow. i think i'm the only rick on the net. how about that.

just a few more passing that's on clique and claque.....

phish.net.

i'm just going to stand up and say that i think the people who
founded this net are a helluva lot cooler than those that founded
some other nets (ahem). i realize i'm speaking for myself. no
matter how much i feel like i'm a part of no group, though i may
want to be, i was here at about 2 nanoseconds after god created
these heavens and earths volunteering to build lyrics files and
faq files. i'm a founding father. god forbid.

if you worship me for it....you're just as weird as i am, and deserve
a permanent place in whatever clique you perceive to be here.

so what's the point? we like minarets the way it is. call us
conservatives...but when some ass comes on to show off his or her
prowess at stupidity, we don't like it. so we simply say something
stupider. or maybe i do. maybe. maybe i'm running off at the mouth.

but i really hope that this net doesn't follow some ugly digression
to sin and hatred and impurity and non-kosherness, and i'll fight
it. dammit. so, if anyone insists on flaming someone else, your
going to get doused with silly-putty so that clare and i can see if
it will melt. yep. that's what we're going to do. do. new.

nu-nu.

as dave mother's used to say.

"you're such a nu-nu, david."

or more likely she'd say "nu-nu(with really high pitched pretentious voice)"

this is also kind of new.

mark heard anyone?

jugular@rhf.bradley.edu Fri Jan 20 22:47:10 1995

hello all-
my apologies in advance for the following post, becuz it may not seem
terribly topical to some of you.

i was just curious if any of you were fans of, or had had the opportunity
to listen to any of mark heard's music. he is, in my very biased
opinion, one of the best songwriters of recent years. his music is not
terribly dave matthews like, in that he tends to remain a bit more on the
"mellow" side. he recently died, far too soon, of a heart attack, and to
give you folks out there an idea of fans of his, which will hopefully
give you an idea of his musical style, i'll just tell you a few of the
artists that appeared on his tribute album. bruce cockburn was a friend
and fan of his, victoria williams, and her husband from the jayhawks
played a song, michael been of the call, phil keaggy, the vigilantes of
love, and many others.

i'm really sorry this post got so long, but i really love heard's work,
and i just thought i'd see if there were any fans, and reccomend a fine
body of music to you fellow music lovers.

going to be able to see ANYTHING??? I'm still a live Daveband virgin, and
I don't want my first to be anything but great (don't we all....)...what
about boots from the show???? Is anybody attempting??? If so, right here
and now, I am making a desperate plea for a copy.....thanx in advance...

Ok...another question....I have only about 120 or so of DMB...my question
involves one of the tapes in my collection....on it Dave is playing real
laid back...it sounds like he's playing alone...although I know he's not..
anyway...the guy I got it from had it labelled simply "Dave un-plugged"..
if you need the set-list I can get that (just not right now as I'm
typing this).......

My current fave is "The Maker" followed closely by "Two Step"

yeah BTW...what are my chances of getting a tour-date listing?!?!?

one last thing.....my net add. is pretty cryptic...the name's Dan

The best book of all time

USXE28B@prodigy.com Sat Jan 21 01:02:50 1995

I know everyone has read this, but the best book is ,"The
Giving Tree". It teaches us important things that we not
only can use as kids, but adults. Just my thoughts. If you
haven't read it, get it.

Shannon Worrell and Dave!

DANIELT@tiger.hsc.edu Sat Jan 21 04:24:01 1995

I just got back from seeing Shannon Worrell at Crossroads[Trax] in C'ville.
Great show!!!!!!!!! It was my first time seeing her live, and she is even
better than the cd. Guess who joined her on stage? That's right...Dave
himself. He sang Eleanor and then Shannon asked him to join her in "We Are the
World." He did a funky verse. Pretty awesome. If anyone by any chance taped
this let me know. I would love to get a copy. Time for sleep...tom

screwy cligues

chobbs@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Sat Jan 21 11:44:58 1995

ok heres a story
once when i was in second grade
my pe teacher came up to my friends and me -- we were all sitting in a
closed circle on the playground .. playing with dirt and matchbox cars or
summin
and the teacher said .. children i need to talk to you about cliques
(of course we thought she meant clicks ...likethe noise you can make with
your tongue) but no
she meant cliques .. a close circle of friends that excludes everyoneelse
and makes thoseexcluded feel badly .. she said it wa baaadd to exclude
people .. that we should share are friendship (idead of fun and caring
and such) with all the other lil boys and girls
and then she made us open up or circle and invite other lil boys and
girls to come play with dirt and matchbox cars
so we did
and the whole nestt week we walked arround going click click .. cliques
are baaddddd so you can come play with us, miss jacobs said we had to
invite you
end of story

now. i am close friends with a lot of people on this net .. but no, i
did not post that story for them
i posted it for all of you who keep telling us cliques are bad
and its all making me say .... we arent a clique .. the very nature of
this net is that it is close and personal .. we post to all and we know
it! sooo we are sharing our fun with alll ... get it?
come play please ... cliques are small and the more the merrier.

now to the dude who didt get in response to a tape id
sorry, i didnt recognize it and the warehouse has yet to be compiled so i
couldnt go look there for it

and ..lots if times i reply to questions that people post personally
like .. ones where the answers can be found in the faq and stuff

obligatory dmb stuff
when did the whole band start playing rhyme and reason?
was it the lexington phish/ dmb show last spring?
im only askig cause i got curious ...

thankya muchly

OHHH MY!

messierb@ucsub.colorado.edu Sat Jan 21 18:04:11 1995

Once agian things are getting more and more interesting by the day. I
spent the last two days convinceing everyone that we should get rid of
11/11/94 and do 3/10/94 for this tree. Now Boofy says he can set me up
with a seed! ARGH. Oh but it gets better. Last night during my gin &
tonic induced dubbing spree the first set of my seed kicked out on me.
As a matter of fact it lies split open on my bed as we speak. Good new
is here to, sort of. The seed master John goes to school with me, so no
reason I can't get a new seed soon (I hope) also I got a shitload of
these things dubbed in the last few days, they will be in the mail
monday. So I guess we shall stick with 3/10/94. 11/11/94, well we will
have to see. I guess if I drop out of school and quit my job I could run
that tree too... We shall have to see. Anyone know how to fix a tape
that has one reel running really slow like it is sticking? And who the
hell has snow? I haven't seen a flake for 2 weeks and I live in Colorado
damn it!

i just threw caution and all sense of sanity and reality to the wind and
reserved tickets on a flight from austin texas to baltimore/washington

drive my ass off to richmond to meet my escort and the rest of you crazy people

add to that the fact that i'll be skipping two classes and two days of work, as
well as blowing almost a full month's paycheck, and i think we'll all agree

3/10/94 Tree

You know I post about this WAY too much. Hopefully this will be the last
for a while. All I request is that if you are on the tree, the former
11/11/94 tree please get in touch with your parents. Tell them if you
are still up for it and all. Branches get in touch with your kids and
make sure everthing is cool. Then get back to me. I need to know who is
on and who is off this tree. BTW I am the only Japhy on this net, I

but how about. SOmeone seed me and I'll administer the Wait tree. I mean, I
live in Winston-Salem and should've gone to that dern show anyway, so why not.
I lve in that stinking town and have to put up with the same damn cops that
all you guys did when you went...

minarets since last year, but that means that I'm not a newbie to
minarets...I just finally got a seed of a collection, hopefully, that seed
with a little love and kindness will sprout into a nice collection of fun
stuff. For instance, I only had one tape at the beginning of last semester,
now I have two boxes of tapes. And I still have many people's tapelists, so
there's likely to be more where that came from, so then I was a tape newbie,
and now I'm probably not. At least, I don't feel comfoartable answering
newbie offeres.....ANyway, before I lose my train of thought entirely, I;ll
shut up...

respond to each other effectively, but I'm not sure that is the point of
minarets. Then again, he wanted an identifiaction of a show, and got no
response, that's not good. We must try to read all the posts even the long
ones without getting offended. Minarets can be a lot of work, or it can be a
lot of fun and very rewarding for all of us. I choose the latter. I went
through all my old trade files from last semester so don't be surprised to
hear from me soon. Anywyay, you guys all have a great Sat. night. peace, Will

MOM IT'S MY BIRTHDAY

bmking@mail.wm.edu Sun Jan 22 00:50:22 1995

I feel like last time I posted about daveband I was negative about the
lexington and wait chapel performances and how they were very similar
setlistwise, so I feel real bad about this, but I feel like I gotta say
it. :)

Ok.. the video.. ummm.. well, it just doesn't click. If it were all
live, the live shots were great. But, the mixage of live and weird concept
footage is too discombobulating, sort of. I think the main problem I
have is that there's no main theme throughout the video. Granted, I've
only watched it twice, but have it on tape so probably will a bunch more,
and look forward to it, but to be honest, I can see why it ISN'T a buzz
clip or buzz saw or toenail clip or anything.. (damn, you'd think after
taking a 5 hour standardized test this am I'd know how to write a
coherent sentence) (or maybe THAT IS why...)

Anyway, I'd like to hear what other peoples' opinions are on the video.

Although it looks like a lot of time was put into the post-production of
the video, the end result doesn't look like a lot of time was put into
the post-production, if you know what I mean..

The Video Kick's Butt!

sctm@vt.edu Sun Jan 22 01:25:00 1995

different. It seems like todays videos all have to tell a story or relay
some kind of deep point. With the the DMB's video, we can enjoy the music
and let our eyes enjoy some really cool whatever you want to call it. The
live footage is incredible, the lighting really creates a nice stage
prescence. I don't think the video is specifically aimed at our short
attention span's like Beavis and Butthead, but rather it's trying to create
a visually stimulating 4 min. showcase for the music. I think it
accomplishes this well. I think it's kind of eighties looking. Back when
the videos were just random compilations of images.
your eyes relax and quit analyzing every little piece of it trying to find
some kind of deep message or theme. I think the video shows the band off well.
concert. Now I get to see some creativity, notice the Fire Dancer! You
think Dave did the animation sequence?

Phish on Letterman

will.schaffarzick@babble.com Sun Jan 22 04:54:48 1995

Ok, ok, ok... I realize this is a question for the Phish net, but I saw
someone's post last week about Phish on Letterman and it made me want to
ask this question... Please find it in your heart to forgive me. ;-)

I attempted to videotape the David Letterman show in which Phish
appeared a few weeks back. I now know I don't know my "am's" from my
"pm's!" To my shock, I had recorded The Price is Right instead. Can
someone at least tell me what Phish played that night, and how it went
on national TV. What was the audience reaction like?

Not to feed the flames on the whole subject of cliquishness and personal
messages on the net or anything, but as it is now 27 minutes into January
22, 1995 (at least by central time), I think it is necessary for me to
wish Brett M.T. Kingswell (possibly better known to many of you as

Birthdays

axvann@minerva.cis.yale.edu Sun Jan 22 12:04:29 1995

1. Let me join in wishing Brett a happy b-day. Brett was ratehr
charitable to me long ago, taping vast quantities of tapes (not DMB) when
I was still relatively a tape newbie. So... hope those GMATs went well.
In fact, I think I'll send Brett a birthday present. How about, oh.....
10/8/94 DMB? Something else? Let me know

2. At first mention of Roe v. Wade, I thought "oh shit." I would think that
high percentages of persons on our net, including myself, are pro- choice.
But not
everyone is. And trust me, there is little that would be more painful to
Minarets than an abortion debate. If you're pro- life and want to vent,
do it to me. My best friend is pro- life, so I can take it. DON'T do it
on the net. Thanks.

3. I think this world would be a much better place if all 16 year olds
quoted Maya Angelou. That is all.

(umm.. if you're looking for dave content, skip this message.. trust me.)

you know, odds are that if you have 50 people together at least two of them
have the same birthdate. (none of us believed this in high school or
whenever we learned it, but it's true enough) I wonder what kind of stats
700+ people bring up? :)

ok, on more completely non-dave content, could someone mail me the #'s for
floodzone in richmond and n'sect club in hampton? (rrrrrusted rrrroot)

well, hey since I'm on a roll..

If you can ever check out Billy Pilgrim, do so.. the slobbering one and I
happened to catch them opening for Cowboy Junkies in C'Ville last year, and
they were excellent. They are basically the "Indigo Guys", two guys with
acoustic gee-tars that just filled trax with their energy.. they even come
from the same haunts as the indigo girls in atlanta, actually. anyway, they
have a self-titled cd that includes some other musicians, so it's more band-
like, but it's still excellente.

and check out morphine, too. bagby (I assume.. he was the one playing
michael lanois' the maker after the wfu show far as I know) was playing them
after the lexington show. it's a barritone sax, slide bass, and drums,
making for a mellow, sonorous sound.. saw them this summer (with a bunch of
french people screaming mourpheeen!! mourpheeeen!!).

ok, well, I'll stop now.

if anyone out there doesn't have many tapes, or does have many tapes, and
would like more, let me know. I'm always willing to tape anything and
everything I have..

hope you all have had a very pleasant evening,

like black coffee like nicotine, i need your love.....

CLIFFORDC@urvax.urich.edu Sun Jan 22 13:59:09 1995

hee hee ok. on the cover thread started by wil foy who cracks me up.
he mentioned 'the devil went down to georgia' and
oh my goodness
this brought back memories for me.
i laughed so hard, good laughing and it reminded me of a time when my dad
took me to play golf
and i had this tacky pink golf glove (because i was
a little girl and girls wear pink)
and we drank barques root beer
and listened to paul harvey's 'the rest of the story'
wow... i really lived in savannah a loooooong time ago..
ok.. back to the point. my dad listened to country then, (he's since
moved on the beethoven and vivaldi...) but that was a fun story i
accidentally babbled but i hope it makes someone smile out there
cause it's a warm memory for me....

i think that dave and the boys would do a great cover of the waterboy's
cover of van morrison's 'sweet thing'.......
make any sense?
hee hee
van morrison has a song caleld 'sweet thing'.
it's about.. oh..say 4 minutes long.
the waterboys did a cover of it that is truly breathtaking and it makes
you want to cartwheel and it's got wonderful violin that makes you want
to close your eyes and jump into the stereo...
it's cool, cause the waterboys did a diddly in the
song from 'blackbird' (lennon-mccartney).
so. dave should cover the waterboy's version, not van morrison't original...
the cd it's on is called 'fisherman's blues' and i'd reccommend it to anyone
who is interested. the waterboys are an irish band, so be forewarned that
you can certainly tell they're irish.

them be the first to let go...'

ahem..... the SLOBBERING one??????????? sorry, i don't remember _that_ part
of the evening. i must concur on billypilgriam, however. sitting crosslegged
on the floor of trax with the two of them strumming away happily in front of
us was like a nice warm summer camp experience or something. they're pretty
creative lyricists, too...

photo of the band along with fellow "roots rockers" Hootie and the Blowfish,
the Jayhawks, and Grant Lee Buffalo. its in the "Trends" section in an
article called "Rock's New Sturm (do they mean strum, maybe?) and Twang".
The text focuses mainly on Hootie's top 25 success, but calls dmb "budding
stars" or something like that, and talks about their strong regional following
and incredible stage proficiency resulting from incessent touring. I
especially liked the quote from the three-piece suited RCA exec who said in
amazement, "There are people at Dave Matthews concerts singing the lyrics to
songs that haven't even been recorded yet!!!!!!".

oh yeah... on that old book thread... if you like mysteries that are alot more
than just mysteries, check out Smilla's Sense of Snow by Peter Hoeg. Its
translated from Danish, and is beautifully written, full of mystical memories
and strength and intelligence.

adios..

a tale of ribaldry for the masses

JPETERS@CENTER.COLGATE.EDU Sun Jan 22 15:09:13 1995

night live last night like me? (i'm really getting sick of goin to school in a
town the size of medium sized cow pasture!) at the end of the show they had a
skit about the internet and one of the new guys was a hairy nasty dude who told
people ove the computer that his name was clare and tried to get them to take off their clothes and
such. to dispell any fears that this might have induced i want to ensure
everyone that our beloved clare is NOT a hairy backed man chainsmoking away
while trying to get us all to be naked. i know 'cause we got to hang out last
street diner to hang out. several interesting things happened that i'm sure
everyone will find intriguing to say the least. here's a transcript of what
transpired. we (rick, lionel and i) got there first and rick left us there so he
could go get $ (let's face it, we're all broke!) and we sat there wondering
what would happen if clare came in before rick got back since i'd never met her
and lionel only briefly. rick got back and clare arrived in a swirl of black
linen and pearls. lionel got up to go pee. i was introduced and we had
coffee. rick got up to go pee. we talked about minarets which alienated
lionel (who is not on this net but is forgiven due to our great and unending
love) rick played with his silly putty. lionel got up to go pee. clare and i
spooned (yeah man! right there in public in a booth with all kinds of people
looking at us!!!) then we switched and spooned in the opposite direction while
clare yelled (sing-song voice) "we're spooning, we're spooning!" rick went
pee. a friend of lionel's came in and we laughed. someone who knew clare came
in and we laughed. someone who i know from school came in and we were amazed
since i live and go to school many, many miles away in ny. lionel went to pee.
rick got out his metal plates and poured them out on the table for all to see.
i finally succumbed to my bladder and got up to pee. we talked more and had
more coffee and then......then....somehow rick ended up wearing clare's pearls
and ice was melting on people and i injured my groin and had to limp to the car
later. it was silly-ness incarnate. rick and lionel peed again and we all
hugged and smiled and were happy when we went home. even though i can't be in
va for valentine's day, you should go as my proxy. please go meet rick and
clare and everyone else here and talk about this wonderful iconoclastic (hey rick, i too love this new
adjective!!!) band we love. everyone can spoon and drink coffee so you have to
go pee, although i bet rick will go pee more than anyone else! and if you're
like me and can't go, smile and know that you're loved by us all and will be
missed. this is a place for us all.

supposed to be checking out nuinfo or something, and LOST THE REM MONSTER
LYRICS! ahhhhh so sad, will the originator please reforward them to me? i

2) it is a pain in the ass to send tapes all over the country for copies of
shows, will those on the net who go to Northwestern please reply so i can get
a list of all of us so we can cut down on time and postage wasted on tapes?
it would also save those making the tapes time so that they don't get stuck
with all of us clamoring for them at once. treats to those who take the post
seriously- thanks!

RTT song #10

EDOHERTY@MACALSTR.EDU Sun Jan 22 16:42:05 1995

Alright, I give up. I've tried to hide my ignorance in hopes that someone else
would mention it, but its been long enough and I would like to know. On the
album Remember Two Things the last song, "Christmas Song" has a long delay at
the end before going into another little jam/song and then some weird nature
sounds. What's up with this? Is this actually supposed to be a part of the
song, or did they put it on as extra. The first time I heard it I could have
sworn it was raining outside. Even after the 50th listen I still got confused
last night. I was sitting here in Minnesota (it doesn't rain in the winter)
and I was shocked that I heard all these crickets and rain. I admit I was on
the verge of sleep at the time, but still I should have known better by now.

So what is the story behind the last track of the album? Where did they get
the sound effects? Why did they put it on there? I've checked the FAQ and
haven't see a word about this, and nobody else has asked in the last two
months. I realize that this is probably a topic hashed over many times, but I
can't wait any longer. Flame me in mail if you wish :-)

Peace!

happy, slappy, mappy, pappy...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Sun Jan 22 16:47:28 1995

you know........

it's been so long since i stuck my foot in my mouth that i forgot how
gross shoes really taste. not to mention that my feet are simply too
large to be saying things as rampantly thoughtless as "i think the
people who founded this net are a lot cooler than the people who found
other nets."

i tend to steer around getting myself flamed pretty well, but i failed
to stay out of the fire with those comments. it's not that i'm going
to stand here and pretentiously beg for the forgiveness of the people
who i offended, because i was indeed out of line. but it all has a
point.

the people who founded phish.net were no different from me, alex, clare
of anyone else, and if i had made any efforts, i probably would have been
able to learn this without making such rude remarks. but now that
certain members of phish.net who call dave.net a home away from home
have put me in my place, and, rather gracefully i might add, deflated
a rather sorely inflated ego, i've made a pretty real revelation about
the whole clique thing that allowed me to kick myself in the throat.

my first experiences with phish.net were two years ago, and i must say
that when i first subscribed i felt it to be a little too stand-offish.
at the same time, i didn't know jack about phish. i came onto phish.net
to learn more about phish. was it because i was too insecure to see
through what i perceived to be a very tight group of people i had, at
the time, very little in common with, or were they indeed a bunch of
assholes. i suppose i assumed at the time, the latter. i also blew
it off. i can only hope that nobody feels that way about me, or boofy,
or ben sterling, or anyone else, upon arriving to this happy habitude
called minarets.net.

at this point, i realize that dave.net is not as small as it once was,
no matter how much smaller than phish.net it may still be. but, with
the help of people who are smarter than me, and have experience with
both nets, i realize that i may really make you feel ill at ease with
all of my spaced out, whacky "shit" (for lack of a better word. the
quotes belong to sandy, by the way).

but no matter how hard i try to make myself an unreadable fuck, i never
direct any of my comments towards anyone. i just like to goof off with
people who don't mind sitting around and reading it. if you don't want
to read it, that's ok, just move along. but i'm not here for the sake
i'm a babbling kind of dude. i like to share my thoughts with everyone
who will listen, and i don't tend to care what people think of it.

but when i inspire someone to quote directly from a history textbook that
essentially tells me i'm an egotistical fuck (which was the essential
message i got), i realize i've screwed up.

the point of this longwinded tirade on how stupid i was this week is that
i don't want new members of this net to ever feel like they are being
driven off. as much as i hate this computer (and i really do), i do get
a lot of satisfaction of getting to know people through it. in my opinion,
there's no such thing as a "newbie." i hate the word (at least, at this
point in my short life of netsurfing i do). i would like to try and think
of new members of this net as people who haven't had the opportunity to
learn as much about this particular band, and that i can help them find
out more. it's why i originally volunteered to write the faq.

and if i could remember what the two things were, i'd tell everyone. over
and over again. i like informing people of things. it's why i'm a
journalist. but i didn't mean to intrude so heavily on other people's
buzz's.

well, depending on which show you know of/were at/heard/listened to, I think
dave had a couple different answers...

1) remember two things.. love your mother and leave only footprints
and
2) remember two things.. buy a cd ..and.. buy another cd

well, according to rumor, the studio minarets and seek up were recorded
in was in rural northern va (rural northern va? there's an oxymoron.:)
and after a couple of sessions they walked outside with a microphone
and recorded whatever nature was willing to play for them. i don't
know if this is really true, but it's kind of romantic.

i'd just chalk up the seek up reprise as another bonus track among the
multitudes of bonus tracks.

 Peace!

doin my stuff and got the phone line all hooked up so i'm on top of
EVERYTHING today... hope all these posts coem out to more than jsut babble...

ok. on this subject.
the song at the end of chirstmas song is seekup.
seekup jam. that they didn't put in the song..
and the rainstorm... well..
i'll give everyone little preview of an excerpt fromteh article file i'm
of the Top 40 mentality. For proof, we can look to the orchestra of
crickets and massive thunderstorm at the end of R2T. "There was this huge
thunderstorm outside where we were recording. So we just took a blank
out there and recorded it. We did the same thing with the crickets."

Re: RTT song #10

jcrother Sun Jan 22 17:14:43 1995

So what is the story behind the last track of the R2T? Where did
they get the sound effects? Why did they put it on there?

The album was recorded, the studio part anyway, at John Alagia's
house/studio in Alexandria, Virginia; just a typical house in the
suburbs of DC.

After recording the tracks a thunderstorm moved through the area. They
set up mics on John's back porch which overlooks a forested ravine.
That's how the thunderstorm became part of Remember Two Things.

The crickets were probably part of that recording session as well and the
jams were most likely recorded while the other tracks were laid down.

At least that's the story I got.

Feel free to interpolate whatever you want.

3/10/94 Tree (fwd)

 From minarets@moose.uvm.edu Sat Jan 21 18:37 EST 1995

You know I post about this WAY too much. Hopefully this will be the last
for a while. All I request is that if you are on the tree, the former
11/11/94 tree please get in touch with your parents.

Wait a second, I called my dad today just after reading this message and
he replied with..."Who the hell is Dave Matthews?"...I just laughed and
smiled at his conservative banker-type humor. (I couldn't help myself..hehe)

Does anyone know if Watchtower was played on 11/26/93 at the Peppermint Beach

said he remembered the band playing Watchtower. Is it just bad memory or an
incomplete show? Thanks a bunch!

anyone interested in trading right now - on campus trading would be
faster and cheaper than firing tapes all over the country in the hopes
that someone might send them back.

what do you think?

cypherc@cleo.bc.edu Sun Jan 22 18:08:49 1995

Waht's up,
I'm looking for a tape of the 10/8/94 show at Avalon in Boston and a show with
"After Her" on it (the original version of Satellite). I only have about 9 hrs.
of DMB, but that does include 4 shows from when Peter was still with the band
(8/4/92, 2/3/93, NYE '92, & 1/30/93 set II), so if anyone's interested, get back
to me and we'll work out a deal.
Later,

SDBD wasn't entirely to attentive to the sound of Dave's voice. Its a great

thanksgiving from 1992. IF YOU HAVE THIS SHOW, YOU HAVE THIS TRADE!!!
Please search your collections now.
that may be in your private stock... Smokin'
Other bands of interest are Phish, RR, ARU, GSW, BT, Alman Bros... ect...
ect... Jazz & Funk (Lookin' for boots, not CDs) Thanks a bunch!

Phish on Letterman

messierb@ucsub.colorado.edu Sun Jan 22 18:26:21 1995

In response to the person wanting to know what they played and all...

I got back from a rocking show at MSG and poped the tape in the VCR. It
was one of those shows where they run late, Daved talked to long to Gene
Wilder or someone, so Phish was closer to the end. They were wearing
quite a conventional outfit for the Phishmeisters, a little dressed up, I
am not even sure if Fish had his dress on. Anyways, busted out into
Chalkdust. Now Chalkdust is a fat song, but not really on that night. Do
n't know exatly why it was cut so short, but it seemed to be only about
3:30 mins or so, in fact they cut out some major jams and shit. It
seemed like they were a diffrent band or something. When they were over
I kind of felt like some other no-name band with one radio hit had just
played, the crowd seemed like that too. But... next night at NYE they
busted out in Chalkdust agian. This time it rocked, more like the 6 min
version it should be, hell probably even longer than that. So I guess
they wern't replaeced by robots like I thought at Providence...

As for Dave content... Well I think Dave will have a much better time
dealing with the network, Letterman setup. I mean Phish has like 6 songs
that are even close to radio time when they play them live, but think of
everything DMB could whip out. I vote for a FAT ASS #36, complete with a
few trademark Dave groans to get it going. Now THAT would rock!

Peace & Out...

Japhy

Listen to Phish, walk around and sleep alot.

Vonnegut and such

nrich Sun Jan 22 18:30:50 1995

Hey there!

Wow, my first posting! I have to say I'm a little nervous. I guess you
could say that I am a half-breed newbie, as I am freshly new to minarets,
but have been listening to DMB for some time.

With that out of the way, what I really wanted to talk about was the post
by PAK recommending any books by Kurt Vonnegut. I HEARTILY agree, the
man is incredible!!!! My particular favorite is "Galapagos". (how the
hell do underline on this thing?!?)

I have thought about picking up something by Noam Chomsky for some time.
Any recommendations?

Feel free to drop me a line anytime. I ususally check my messages at
work, and I'd much rather be doing this than that. Hasta luego!

oh my oh my
i was thinking about the 2 things ... love yoru mother and footprints vrs
buy cds etc ..
ive heard em both
but that aint the point of this message
da point be
I fuckin finally get the image hidden in the dots on the cover of the cd r2t
i feel like such an idiot ..
i always thought i was seeing either a) a hand imiation of lil bunny
foo foo hoppin through the forest .. the 2 fingers being bunny ears
or
b) a hand doing the peace symbol

but now now i get a whole 'nother image
its a hand holding up 2 fingers ..not a rabbit or a bunny foo foo (well
it could be but this makes sooo much sense) jsut 2 fingers ..like 1, 2
the numbers ..like remember 1 things no rememeber 2 things
ahhh the ecstatic geeling of an epiphany !!!
and on that note, heres 2 more things to remember
a lil bit of love has never a hurt a thing and .. neither have a few kind
words
love and loving kindness

so. dave should cover the waterboy's version, not van morrison't original...
the cd it's on is called 'fisherman's blues' and i'd reccommend it to anyone
who is interested. the waterboys are an irish band, so be forewarned that
you can certainly tell they're irish.

Sorry, for the non-Dave content

WIFOY@DAVIDSON.EDU Sun Jan 22 21:13:42 1995

Samples show at Ziggy's in a couple of weeks? If you are, and if you live
within say, three hours of Winston, then you should be at least thinking about
it, then let's do a meeting. I'm a native and we could do dinner, or diner as
the case could be, and then go to the show. I'm planning to tape, and bring
your lists, so we can arrange trades. Send ME mail, not the list.

We can deal. Hell, now that I have a modem, I might even approach posting as
much as you guys...Claire, I'm flattered that you thought that my Charlie
Daniels band idea was funny. It wasn't my intention, but it is kinda
wacko...Other than watchtower, I doubt DMB will do any other covers, unless
they're jamming with a particular musician, please oh please, a jam with
everything on Soulfish, or South of the Border, or Everyday Syndrome...

4/6/93[?] show. April 6th is my birthday! If anyone out there has a tape of
either a Samples, DMB, or Everything show from that date in any year, email
me, and we WILL work out a trade. I think it'd be fun... Or if anyone is out
this year, on my 21st birthday, then please, oh please, tape one, and we will
trade for it...
