Shows

dbh4n@watt.seas.virginia.edu Wed Jan 18 16:04:12 1995

Is anyone else here in C'ville really exited about this month's
concert attractions. Shannon Worrell onn Fridayy, Tim Reynolds
and ARU and hopefully Rusted Root next weekend. I believe
there is someone cool the next weekend too! I think I am in
trouble as I only have $25.00 to spend this whole semester. If
anyone else is going to some of these shows and wants to go out
with a group of us before hand, please write!

have been from the sound board, good quality. i have a good friend whom i
go to the shows with and we have taped the more recent ones, good quality.
i am not going to write the set list for each show. some tapes contain
special little stuff like one michael plays the accordian during "won't be
long", some old raw different versions of "lost", "martyr", also contain
songs that people new to the root probably never heard like-"cover me", "my

names and cellars

NebuIous@aol.com Wed Jan 18 16:31:07 1995

ok, i'd just like to say that i think it is VERY DISCONCERTING that there
is another person named

dominic

on this net.

oh get over it. there are at LEAST 4 ben's on the net. me, tanen, ben @
columbia, and another ben, but i forgot where he goes. anyway, it's just
strange. for a few months i think tanen was #1 and i was ben #2. then it
got confusing. :)

also, i've come to realize that there are quite a few of us who LIVE IN
THE BASEMENT and LURK FROM THE DEPTHS OF THE GROUND.

"just another note from the cellar"???

it's MEMO from the cellar, damnit. MEMO. sort of like hst memo from the
wrong desk or somethin. i dunno. i started using that way before i had any
net access. before i had this computer.

love & kisses,

stanley

AH HA! I BET THERE AREN'T MANY STANLEYS HERE!

'chocolate&vanilla pudding' has like the bestest riff i've ever heard in my
life. oh gosh it tastes good. does anyone want to give me tapes?? i'll do
something nice for you. i just can't think of what quite yet.

just another memo from the cellar,

dr. seuss and 2 sets and nyc tickets

NebuIous@aol.com Wed Jan 18 16:36:16 1995

go, but i don't have to like it, so I am procrastinating, and a bit
curious how it has come to be that in such an educated circle of
sensitive souls no one has proclaimed the genius of Dr. Seuss, but
that is perhaps best left to another time,

on a not-very-related note, i wore a dr. seuss to the 12/28/94 phish show
which i love love love. anyway, it was the first time i'd worn it, i hadn't
washed it or anything. anyway, sometime between there and coming back to the
big city black city i thought i had misplaced, since i couldn't find it.

YESTERDAY I FOUND IT. at the base of my bed. it was there the whole time,
that sly shirt. anyway, i'm so overjoyed...

a second set of Dave any day of the week, which i wonder if i'll get
during this tour...everyone is going to do 2 sets...we're gonna get 4
sets for the price of a ticket, yeah that would be cool, but is it likely?

oh i think it's pretty much a given that they will both play a set. before
NYE, the last 2 set show was what... from before UTTAD... dave is getting
lazy imho... but i think it may also be that if he takes a break and comes
back, it will get even more crowded... these days at a show, half the time
i'm worrying about my room to breath. bleh.

Probably get a long bender like set, which is certainly lovely, but never
enough...so to all those that thought us dave fanatics were being petty

i doubt even that much. there are 3 bands playing, ugly americans, bht, and
dave. ugly americans will probably get a short set, 30-45 minutes. bht and
dave will get the same amount of time. i'd guess 90 minutes each. these
shows will fit on one XL II(s)... oh man that sucks. that sucks so bad. it
uh sucks ass.

ben

sorry about posting twice... well, i'm not sorry but... uh... i guess this is

just another memo from the cellar,

CD's the final word

KARYME@aol.com Wed Jan 18 16:45:08 1995

I am from norfolk, don't go to college, and am DEFINITELY not a groupie. I
have met Dave, lots of my friends are friends with Dave, so I can profess a
certain personal bond to this band. We hired them some time back in 1991 or
1992 to play a show for us, When I met Dave, he was sitting near a piano,
know him.
All this hype......
His music has become more refined since the good old days, he is a different
performer also. Anyway, my point is..... I think daves success came from
people like you, you are what make it happen, and definitely tape trading
makes it happen. Dave knows this, and he is not abouot to stop it.

But, RCA doesn't like it.

Anyway, the other night I was sittin in a bar watching my glass get empty
and the full again. I looked up and there was Fenton. We grew up together
only i was a little behind him. I had seen him a few weeks before upstairs
at the Marriott before the New years show. So we talked about the show.

A few minutes later, we found ourselves outside the bathroom talking again.
together, and then I sprung the question on him. Ironically before I got on
this net and saw the posts about CD's. When I asked him what the
possibilities were, he, well, sort of frieked. He told me that if RCA
found out about this, taping would VERY likely END. and Dave would have no
rights over this underground stuff that we do. He also said that if RCA
found out who- that person is basically FUCKED!!!!

For those of you who don't know, Fenton is a long time worker/manager of
Dave Matthews Band. He has been there almost since the beginning. And he
knows what is going on.

Guys,
If you promote these CD's, you will be shooting yourselves in the foot. You
will be ruining the thing that I think gave Dave so much success. - Tapes
are fine. Just be responsible and don't spill beer all over them....

I will hopefully see Dave in a couple of weeks- I'll se if he will post to
this group. Wouldn't that be sweet.

Any comments?

the bootleg cds definately do exist
you can probably find them at the very same "head shops" that SELL
cassette recordings of live shows

but, considering the # of hours the dead have played live .. there are
very few live cds out there .. and i dont have a clue as to how they
keep illegal stuff like that down to a minimum among there listeners

Benji's Thoughts

bricker@acme.highpoint.edu Wed Jan 18 17:50:18 1995

iLike your friend, I don't post very often, and I can definitely see a
cique about the net. I don't see a problem with it however, and the fact
that we can come on and speak our mind in a respectful fashion is a
wonderful thing. I was on the phish.net for a while and now I am not. This
was not of my own accord however, I was mysteriously taken off because of
too much mail in my box. Anyway not many people listen to what you have to
say on phish.net, and it is a lot less crowded over here. Granted, we don't
jam with carter on weekends, but we have an extremely inclusive access to
the Dave Matthews Band and their music. Some of the tapes I have recieved,
along with x-mas cards and shit this past year were very warm and fuzzy.
It's a good feeling when a group of people "feel" alike, and it makes me
smile (kind of like at the beginning of #36)

Re: cliques and boots

EDOHERTY@MACALSTR.EDU Wed Jan 18 18:18:55 1995

I think it is inevitable that when you first join a group you seem kind of
distant from it. There are other people around who have heard them a lot
longer than you have. They have more tapes, know more stuff, etc. The longer
you've been around the more comfortable you will feel. When I first joined
rec.music.gdead and was a newbie you definatly pick out the net.cleberties who
talk all the time and "seem to know more". Few people on here have actually
met Dave or have any inside knowledge besides being fans for a long time.

It also takes a certain type of person to post all the time. Some people post
whatever they are thinking. For them it doesn't have to be "important" DMB
related stuff at all. It just may be something they are thinking about. Not
everybody is going to do this (thank god, think if 700 people wanted to say
something everyday :-)). Not everyone is comfortable posting a lot, and in
some respects they will be on a different level of involvement in the group.

1) posts a ton..maybe every day..doesn't have to be "important" or related.
Everyone knows who these people are because we see their .sig files every time
:-)

2) posts on topics like this that can be related to DMB or the net or whatever.
These people feel compeled to speak their mind on some issues. These people
don't follow up on every thing that goes on, but they are willing to post when
the feel like it.

3) posts only when they think it is really important. These people may just
post a setlist from a show they just saw, or the occasional "I need to get more
tapes...lets trade". This person usually stays out of most debates on the
net.

4) never posts...lurks around...maybe sends private email to people. This
person does not get involved in net debates but they usually read everything
that goes on. These people know what's up, but they rarely if ever post.

I'm not critiquing any of these, nor do I believe this is a complete list.
I've also noticed that people tend to move from 4 to 3 to 2 and sometimes even
to 1 the logner they hang around here. A functional sociologist might argue
that we need all four types and they all serve a valuable function on the net
(e.g., if every single person posted 1 or two messages a day...with 700
subscribers to minarets.net...that makes for about 700-1400 messages a day).

Yeah, don't buy them! As for the Grateful Dead. They have done a good job at
saturating the market with bootlegs that most people stay away from bootleg
CDs. The Dead officially established a tapers section on 10/27/84 because
Healy was annoyed with all the mic stands in front of them. "You could stand
at the soundboard next to Healy," says Steve Marcus, "and literally not see the
stage because of all the mic stands. At reserved seat shows, people would show
up with their tickets and tapers would be set up in their seats. That started
getting the Dead angry," so they put them behind the soundboard.

It is a real problem for bands and there are few things they can do. Most of
them come out of Italy or other European countries. A number of countries in
Southeast Asia are also getting into the scene. They have different rules on
copywrite laws, so technically they are allowed to do this. It really comes
down to supply and demand. People want this stuff and someone will provide it
for them. The best thing we can do is spread the tapes we own and discourage
people we know from buying the CDs. The situation might be more ethically
complex for bands that don't allow taping. If they don't allow taping (and you
think they should), and someone happens to have this killer CD.... You are a
huge Miles Davis fan and see this live recording from 1966 that looks really
cool. Miles Davis never allowed taping, nor is he getting money from the sale.
Lets say you buy it. Miles isn't going to ban tapers...he never allowed it in
the first place. I present this as an example. I have never bought a CD
bootleg myself, but I have seen people post these justifications. It is a
whole different ball game with a band that does allow taping (i.e., DMB)

Peace!

C.D. boot

USXE28B@prodigy.com Wed Jan 18 18:56:28 1995

Why doesn't the band release a live C.D. now. Yes it will
draw the annoying ones in closer, but they have enough
songs. It will just beat the Bootlegers to it, and they get
the cash.
Also in Help myself he says call 1 800 help my(your?)self.
I remember back in the 80's when 867 5309 came out I called
that number. I know that you can't do it with the DMB song,
and that this is quite random. oh well

insightful post (and your tree!). i'll just repeat what i said to
ben(nebuious) before. i was once a newbie, and while i wasn't
particularly intimidated by minarets, i saw how the perceived
cliquishness could make others uncomfortable. i AM really glad that this
is such a loving, caring, friendly, familial net, and don't want to see
the day when we get 40,000 people like r.m.phish, or become phlame- and
bad vibe-filled like that other newsgroup(not that i don't love the
band). it is inevitable that minarets will grow, and uncontrollably. i say
that we do our best to maintain the familiarity of this place, while
extending a friendly hand or two or 700 to those that arrive.

Cliques and Tapioca Pudding

WIFOY@DAVIDSON.EDU Wed Jan 18 19:41:48 1995

mail list, kinda like minarets? I'm trying to set one up and I'll keep
everyone posted. Just blitz me with a response if you like the idea. I mean
hey, what are those extra blocks in my account this semester for anyway?

choose to not be friendly. I'm not a netgod, nor would I want to be one. I
just like the band and want a cool place to set up preconcert meetings like
3rd St. Have fun guys! I won't be there..., to discuss taping and trading, a
place to socialize, and a place to introduce new people to DMB. Remember what
it felt like when you were getting taller as a kid? -Growing Pains some people
call it, well, that's what's happening here. We're kinda tall and we're not
used to it yet. Now that Dave and the gang are all grown up, we are having to
deal with more people and those people aren't as familiar yet with us, or the
music.
participate. It's fun. I've never met the VA folks except for Alex at the
NYE everything show, and maybe a few others. But there are some fun
connections and conversations outside of the list. Just post or send us
personal email; we'd all love to hear from you. More importantly, send Claire
mail; she's kind of our NetMom/friend/Queen all rolled into one. She and
others set us straight ;). Acutally, don't flood Claire's mailbox with mail,
nor mine, but drop a line some time, I don't bite, nor will anyone else as
long as we are reasonable and friendly. Whether or not you espouse the Golden
Rule from JudeoChristian ethic, it works. Treat others like you wanna be
treated and they will likely respond in kind[ not bud, although that's
possible too]. We're friendly, and we want to be friends with everyone. I
certainly won't turn down a friend. Who knows maybe you listen to some other
band i'll like or have a tape that we could trade, or maybe you will open my
eyes to something or I might have something meaning ful to contribute to you,
and in fact, we all do, otherwise, why the hell are we on this? So...

regular programming....

up fuuuunkkkyyyyy, try listening to The Everyday Syndrome by Everything.
That's my absolutel favorite. Another cool one is "All is Quiet," which is
relatively new [ Alex, know when it was written? trying to put a FAQ together]
or one off of Labrador that I don't hear at too many shows, "Chosen Few." Of
course, then there's some elusive stuff they only play once in a blue moon...
Also, these guys jammed with Dave and Gibb Droll recently at the Circle E
Ranch, the "farm." Anyone go and tape??? I'll trade whatever. Look for a
Newbie offer for everything to come sometime around the signing party in
February.
the 1000th new subscriber a toaster or something. So with that, I will say,
zamaste, peace, I'll see or write ya later. -Will

The dead bootleg cd's do exist
I've seen a bunch around
SO WHY AREN"T they popular???? simple

dead bootlegs are everywhere -one can get some great dead tapes with
little or no effort at all...

before i moved to virginia and got on this net it was a real bitch for me
to get DMB tapes and when i did get them they were shitty qual...
2 years ago if i saw a dave bootleg cd at the house of guitars in
rochester (my homo town) i would have been tempted

the answer....give (or trade) bagbys to everyone with any interest at all
in DMB (and of course always use cool fillers like phish, rusted root,
bob marley, bela fleck etc)

"Virginia is COOL!!!" -dave at lex

cliques are for noisy keyboards

bmking@mail.wm.edu Wed Jan 18 20:15:56 1995

davenet was like the population of the world for a long time.. it stayed at
a relatively constant population. then, about 100 years ago world time, it
started growing geometrically.. so, all these damn wars erupted and
well, let's just say it hasn't been a pretty place since. (the world, that
is). so, anyway, there's a core group of people that have been using this
here mailing list to talk amongst themselves for a long time, and even though
several hundred more people have joined the net, they still do, and the
several hundred more don't quite know what to think about it, whether it's
snobbish or elitish or what-have-you..

however, it's a group of friends that has let anyone and everyone else into
the group. so, I think the feeling may have been like a carful of people and
a couple old friends are chatting away.. not being purposefully exclusive,
nor not wanting to talk with everyone else, they just don't realize if
they're being exclusive and would gladly talk with everyone else just the
same.

well, if that wasn't convuluded enough..

anyway..

anyone have 2 tix for the v-day show?

peace on earth and goodwill towards men,

judgemental and completely non-objective) or maybe just non-traditional.

I've read the digest of Minarets nearly every day for the last six months
or so and, I tell you, I haven't made it through an entire digest without
smiling, at least once, yet.

peace,

Trading and Feb. 5

axvann@minerva.cis.yale.edu Wed Jan 18 20:40:59 1995

Howdy!
(The new Adam recently received word that he will be a southerner next
year as he continues to avoid reality by staying in school.)

Almost done taping my newbie offers!
(Three or four people cheer wildly)

So anyway... Anyone interested in a trade or two? I'm looking for
something a little bit out of the way - don't reply with offers of
6-26-93 or 10-26-93 or 11-17-92. I will of course send my list to
interested parties. There's about 60-70 hours of DMB, so I'm sure you'll
find something that strikes your fancy.

I'd prefer to trade with someone planning on coming to the February 5
show in New Haven (No postage hassle). Ian, if you're still out there,
maybe we could set another small trade up.

And while I'm at it, it's a Sunday show, so anyone who wants to have a
beer or something before the show let me know- enough responses and I
might get something organized?

boots...and galoshes

75714.1363@compuserve.com Wed Jan 18 20:41:35 1995

since '76-- my take on this taping thing, use or recycle as you wish.......
them?) made over the years, but considering that they've averaged approx. 90
shows per year for the 20 or so years that decent portable taping equip. has
been available, the 10 or 15 boot releases i'm aware of seem pretty
insignificant. it's obviously never been a pressing issue among the dead
organization, as witnessed by the officially sanctioned taper section presently
in use, and by the "don't ask, don't tell" policy of yesteryear. the few
releases that have appeared seem to me to be the work of an immoral few who
manage to get hold of tapes, but don't really get what the dead are about, and
how cool it is to have all this great music available--as karyme from norfolk
pointed out, these tapes build followings and make money for both bands in the
long run......the people who who do this are probably the same who got the dead
banned from many venues by showing up in huge numbers w/o tickets, because they
had heard what a great party the scene was, doing max alcohol, and being a
nuisance and irritant to all.

allowed, an unscrupulous few will occasionally obtain a tape and do this. i
think the idea someone had to buy the cd, then turn the place that sold it to
the law is an excellent one-- stores can not stay in business long if they get
slammed for this.99% of tapers and traders will continue to ethically do their
thing, and we'll all (including dmb) be better off for it. 'nuff said

inside at nye richmond show-- i didn't see that at the 12/27 fox show, so
hopefully was an aberration caused by it being new years eve. however, it was
very disappointing to find that the first 25 ft. or so from the stage had been
taken over by a majority of these folks--i had to bail out & enjoy from a
distance. same thing at the raleigh show w/ from good homes last year (but not
witnessed at raleigh show w/blues traveler earlier in year),,,,crowd is
changing, as some have lamented. up to those of us who see the light to set
example to newcomers, and help them to also see the light..."for what good is
faith without works?"

Re: C.D. boot

mverspoo@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Wed Jan 18 22:46:40 1995

...uhhhh...isn't Remeber Two Things a live C.D.??
they signed w/ RCA) It was released last year through Bama Rags Records.
By the way, I asked this a while back and never got a reply...does anyone
know which date(s) at Trax were the ones on RTT? (I believe that I was
there, but just wondering...I seem to remember a BIG taping thing at one
of the shows.)

I know that you can't do it with the DMB song,
and that this is quite random. oh well

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Hi everybody-
show. The show is two 90 minute tapes including some nice Rusted Root
filler. Please get in touch with your branches/leaves and let's get this
thing cruisin'. I'd like to have it done completely in two weeks, but I
know that's pushing it - especially since I'll be making about 40 tapes
myself. Analog branches, I am your branch - so you should be hearing
from me shortly; if not, make sure you get in touch with me.
Unfortunately, I am relatively short on cash and blanks, so I
personally want to keep trading to a minimum for the time being.
in your address, please let me know. As usual, if you have questions,
comments, etc., let me know. I tried to keep most people together
geographically, but that didn't work in several cases - sorry. If you
requested to be a branch you are - and I will be taping for all analog
branches, so that no one gets any lower than 2nd gen. Take care-

ok, i'd just like to say that i think it is VERY DISCONCERTING that there
 is another person named

 dominic

 on this net.

oh get over it. there are at LEAST 4 ben's on the net. me, tanen, ben @
columbia, and another ben, but i forgot where he goes. anyway, it's just
strange. for a few months i think tanen was #1 and i was ben #2. then it
 got confusing. :)

that's my brother's name. he's Recently converted.

it's MEMO from the cellar, damnit. MEMO. sort of like hst memo from the
wrong desk or somethin. i dunno. i started using that way before i had any
net access. before i had this computer.

note... memo... whatevers.

when he spells it the RIGHT way...

;)

i'm listening to the beloved-by-many 10/26/93 tape.

this is the one where Dave blows it in the middle of I'll Back You Up-- i
can't hear the R2T version without thinking of this tape... hee hee...

and finally cliquish stuff...i agree with whomever...but i don' think its intentional...just silly
Here's my take on ben's evocative prose, um, i think the friedliness is
to be emulated, that cliques are inevitable in such a big group, that in
time, we might all share such coziness, and I hope ya'll keep right on
singing silly love songs...

as it's all in good fun...

Thanks babycakes, hurts not much when you're around, in your intuitive

Re:Dead and Bootlegs

jag1@cornell.edu Thu Jan 19 02:03:08 1995

The reason for the relative lack of Phish and DEad Bootleg CDs is because
they allow taping at the shows. If they try hard enough, fans can get
tapes of almost any show because so many people tape and are willing to
trade with other fans. There is no need to spend $40 on something you can
get for the price of two blanks and postage. A Pearl Jam fan, on the other
hand has little choice but to buy a bootleg CD because there are so few
people who have the means to illegally tape a show. Even then the quality
is usually very poor.
The Dave Mathews band has been generous enough to allow live taping and
provide us with soundboard patches and even a power strip for our
equipment. DMB play hundreds of shows each year, so its only logical that
someone will abuse the privelege the band gives its fans. As long as
people continue to freely trade their tapes, there will simply not be a
market for high priced Cds.
Musician Magazine published a cover story on bootlegs in one of their
summer issues. It specifically talks about what the Dead has done to
prevent their live shows from being sold illegally. Check it out.

"I remember asking why there lies aggression and separation
where there should be love."

cds and trips and random other things

KOLIVER1@UA1VM.UA.EDU Thu Jan 19 07:48:28 1995

ok---i got back from chapel hill......
and just for those of you in the tuscaloosa/birmingham area
it is not a bad one day trip...if you dont
mind being awake for 75 hours...(but thats only cause
i hadd to work when i got back)..so,,,,

so/....if you mailed me something, and i dont
mention it here, ill get back to ya today
after i weed through these 419 messages......

first, ben, wifoy, rick, ms. dash, and anyone else
who said something about the cliq thread (hate that
word too)........i think its wonderful that was brought
up, and correct what these and other people said
said about it.........nothing makes people any different than
anyone else, simply because we post more, or were here longer,
or whatever.......i didnt post anything for about 9 months after i
got on....and i only mention this because people (i wont tell who)
asked me, i noticed, if what ben and rick said was true....

seriously.........

i got one that said 'youre doing a tree, you must be one of _those_
people....are rick and ben right....?'
well, shit, i dunno....they are right as far as im concerned, but that
doesnt matter........yea, i talked to dave.....yea, he came up to me
the next night and said 'hey keith'....so what?.......if that makes
you feel different, then talk to him yourself......
my sister (who is weird, ben...youre right, there) who had only heard
jimithing on the radio, and r&r from a show, talked to him too....

and she certianly doesnt know any more than anyone on this net.....

but that's not what thi net is about....blah blah blah (omit redundancy)

i mean, that's why we answer questions for people, and that's why we like
getting questions answered for us....and that's why i made that newbie offer
where i was gonna accept 3, and took 10 or 11......and thats why we encourage
everyone to go to the gatherings...whether or not you want to trade and
regardless of how many posts you have made and how long you've been reading
clareemily's........really...its about that friendship that we could/do
have by using our time to read things dedicated to 'the discussion of the dave
matth.....' see?.....i love all my newbies, and im gonna do my best to
hook 'em up so they are as much a part of this as i....

but the personals only mean i have shit to say......and yea...i could mail
personally, and i quite often do, but quite frankly, it is much easier to
this way, and you have to admit...discussion related to dmb...is extremely
wide open......ie...book thread............not much to do with dmb...but
if we have one thing in common (like dmb), then possibly we will find other
likes and interests in common.....but sometimes the personal messages aren't
even *that* relevant....well, who cares? shit...when we appear to be running
out of bandwidth (whatever the fuck that *really* is), i'll quit wasting it..
but in the meantime.....

clareemily.....good call on the alica and looking glass books....have to
read them both
have to
have to
have to

and try..wendell, his cat, and the progress of man by v. campudoni....
...and the breakfast of champions, or.. slapstick by k. vonnegut
...and one by r. bach
...and reasonable creatures by k. pollitt
...and zen and the art of motorcycle maintenence _and_ lyla by r. pirsig
...and mysticism and the new physics or the holographic universe by m. talbot
...and the latest calvin and hobbes....etc etc etc

it will close on fri (the sign ups....so if you havnt gotten your thing
then, then do so)

and for this new boot cd thing....i forgot what show it was from...
but not the 07.30 VA one, you know, this other one.......who has a seed
i'll tree this one, too........many nice people on the other tree....oldbies
and newbies alike......and middlebies

middlebies....mulburies (monkey chases weasel)

requested an update........how 'bout it?

and for the 07.30.94 tree (revisited).......some people who signed up as
branches are going to have to become leafs....but only about 3 or so.....
so, if you would like to volunteer, then let me know............

Re: What has the Dead done

morgan_dailey@spacemail.jhuapl.edu Thu Jan 19 08:24:47 1995

the bootleg cds definately do exist
you can probably find them at the very same "head shops" that SELL
cassette recordings of live shows
but, considering the # of hours the dead have played live .. there are
very few live cds out there .. and i dont have a clue as to how they
keep illegal stuff like that down to a minimum among there listeners
hmm musings .. blessed by a muse
catherine

Hmmm, there are at least 8 officially released live dead CD's with 3 from the Vaults and Dick's Picks II coming soon. That's more than any other band that I know of. (Allman Bro's may have around 5 live releases?)

I also know of several "head" shops that have extensive show libraries that copy the shows for the price of balnks.

THe dead have played some 3000 shows over the past 30 years, so ratio of # hours performed to live released material may be on par with the rest of the rock world. Interesting question though.

CD boot

Welp, that's exactly what one of the greatest musicians on this earth
did at one time. When Frank Zappa learned that one of his shows was
being booted, he bought a copy and had Riko release it. Voila! He
gets the royalties and the cd bootleggers get nada. Why pay $30
bux for the same thing that's $15?

I'll be purchasing tix for the Syracuse DMB show which is in a reserved
seating venue. How do I go about securing a seat behind the soundboard
to tape?

I got a fairly nice jvc deck, do I simply bring it in with my cable

Where do I plug in for power?
Do I have the right equipment?

Thanx, I can't wait! Dan

In response to that person who suggested the Devil Went Down To Georgia,
I think that's cool. I've been thinking about what songs would sound
good as Dave cover tunes (I have a lot of time on my hands). How
about Michael Hedges? "Ready Or Not" and "Sister Soul" sound kind of
Dave-like, or maybe I'm crazy. They laughed when I said that the
Dead should cover Garden Party by Ricky Nelson or Yummy, Yummy, Yummy,
I Got Love In My Tummy...I think I can still hear them laughing, but
it has been a hectic day, or it's that new cold medicine.

Michael Hedges has the second best version of All Along the Watchtower...

Free to be Minarets

hillcs@picard.ml.wpafb.af.mil Thu Jan 19 14:43:36 1995

How many hours this box beams at me
Friends who cannot see me
Sharing of our energy is free
You do not know me

I have enjoyed the comfort of this list for only a short time, tempted to
post, never intimidated, just not inspired. Enough.

Respect I give to my friend at the CD connection who gave me UTTAD the
first week it came out. I bought R2T the next day and ordered the fire
dancer hat and stickers and shit. Never felt so close to an artist,
feeling Dave's words, energy, the bands groove. Found this list soon
after.

Respect to this list and good feelings all over for those of you whos souls
were touched by this band much earlier than I and have witnessed it's
inevitable success. I try not to envy you. You will accept me, all netters
will come to find that this place is for us to be free. Free as I am now
to say what I want and not care.

Drove two hours by myself to see Dave at the Vouge in Indy. My ticket stub
is right there. Andrea met me there, that was way out, she's around, cool
one. So Rusted Root raged, I just leaned against the bar, one step up from
the floor, just off center. Groovin' RR warm up groovin on my step flowin
beers to my friends. Go out for a smoke with the girls at the break and
return with a smile. Hang out and gather by the stage, crowd seemed very
mixed, Dave came on and the rest is history.

Wondering wandering after the show, damn drunk. Woah there's Dave, "heh
Andrea, come here and be chilly" so then we met Dave. I just went up to
him and gave him a big hug. It's what I felt was right ya know, lover I
am, I could feel Dave is a lot like me. We didn't say much. Babbled about
loving his shit and introduced Andrea. He paused and looked at us as he
got into the bus. Andrea was there, I would have gone in, we would have,
why not? I forgive myself in that state, or was I really star struck? I
don't think so, Dave is a lot like me, not that I believe in Astrology. I
told him to remember me, I'd love him forever, A lifetime is a long time,
I'll meet him again.

Lost my train, that was a tough question, got distracted, I love this job.
Better get to work now, sorry, I should do this at like 4am, but I haven't
slept in a coupladays anyway.

Psychological Vacation, my friends, party tonight at The Palace Club in
Dayton, then in Cincinnati this weekend. Fun will be had. Greg was over
last night, spreading tidings of joy to Jenny, Carla and I. I hope they
work on my song.

Take a look again
Find out who I really am
What are we all about
This crazy net thing we do
Time spent learning and caring
wasted not
I won't waste my brain...
Glad to have a good one
thank you, is that why I like to...
work it out so much.

My little brother's friend Charles (ex-Samples, Fox Theater in Boulder) was
down in Mustique New Years Eve and promised to send boots from the recent
shows in Boulder. As of now I'm waiting for some offers from the net here,
Rick and who else? Tha Davemaltations tape and, was it Adam or Chardy. I
sent someone some goodies, suprise, suprise, no responses. Talk to me,
send me mail.

Glad there is a place like here where I can be free. See me, feel me.

Be cool all Minarets, and apologies to the Dancing Nancies.

Love,
Chas

..uhhhh...isn't Remeber Two Things a live C.D.??
(For those of you who don't know, that CD was released by DMB before
they signed w/ RCA) It was released last year through Bama Rags Records.
By the way, I asked this a while back and never got a reply...does anyone
know which date(s) at Trax were the ones on RTT? (I believe that I was
there, but just wondering...I seem to remember a BIG taping thing at one
of the shows.)
       Mariecken

i wouldn't consider remember two things a live cd per se, because the songs
are all individually cut (as in the crowd shuts up artificially b/w cuts),
and there are two studio songs, as well as two songs recorded "live" but
without an audience (i'll back you up and x-mas).

i don't really think they were trying to capture the bands live energy with
r2t, so much as trying to put a solid digital effort out.

but, i would say the recently ep is intended to capture the dave in his
"raw" form, even if they did cook halloween just a tad.

Roseland debacle

marianne@mail.ilt.columbia.edu Thu Jan 19 17:46:05 1995

Here is the official scoop ala i don't know his name, but he has always
every time answered the phone when I call Irving. He is the one that
confirmed Tickets did not go on sale 'til Friday; he is the one I brought
to task this afternoon when I heard of Columbia Ben's notice (my mail is
acting really weird. Ben, my box never received your message :-o) So the
deal is that TB sold about 500 tickets in error, they have been stopped and
will not begin again until tomorrow, 10 am. Well and good.

500 tickets sold, none available at box office, with the date of ticket
sale advertised to the contrary. Wild. I know it's not like Phish at MSG,
but those in the know (us) didn't know, and still 500 by phone alone went
very, very quickly.

i am heading to irving in the morning/afternoon to avoid unnecessary fees.
would be more than willing to pick up tix for those unable, unwilling or
otherwise disinclined. Uh, sorry, but i mean only NYC people who can get
me cash or non-NYCers I know well (Scott in UVM will you be coming down
this time? Alexis?)

BROTHER CHAOS NEWS CLOCK

mus4rlm@cabell.vcu.edu Thu Jan 19 18:57:04 1995

Hey all. "Hey everybodeee..."

Happy,Happy to finally be back screaming from the Minarets and later
on to be dancing and surely making faces...* *

o.k. heres me new thing....

a digestified post for lengthier ramblings!!!

now to begin....

***************************************************************

1) o.k. whoever is making the bootleg DMB CD's better watch their
back because DMB management is way pissed. talked to Bagby and he
said that DMB management is gonna' make an example out of the
bootlegger when they find out...YIKES...i know i wouldn't want to
get on Coran's bad side!!!! anyway, Jeff said it was way cool and
the right thing to do by offering to copy the show for anyone who
was tempted to buy the CD. so we won a few points for the tapers out
there in DAMABA land. however......

2) Jeff said that DMB mangement thinks the soundboard scene is
getting a little outta' control. uh-oh. yes tapers, i think our feed
is gonna' dry up real quick...damn, and just when Sir Buford was
gonna' invest in a DAT..shit...seriously though, Jeff said that on
this Big Head Todd tour tapers are most likely going to have to do
the old cross-mike audience taping. he said that a few shows would
probably get a feed when DMB was the headliner...yea, its a bummer.
there are 4 years worth of Bagby's out there already though and i'm
sure some people close to the band will be able to circulate soundboard
copies by the grace of the BAGMAN. thats what i've learned. just
thought i'd spread the word...but don't give up hope...the live
show... the living, breathing and dancing is what really counts!!!

3) DAVMALTATIONS is coming...all those that sent out tapes eons ago...i
know you have been patiently waiting.. sorry for that, but i keep
editing and re-editing trying to make it better...ya' know? anyway,
it's done as of last nite...i promise this time....so i'll start
taping this weekend and mail on Monday. all tapes should be done in
a week and a half.... give a break though...i got in way over me head
and my tape machine is sorda mad at me...but every time i listen to
it, i burst out laughing at how weird Dave actually is when he is
thrust in front of the mic...."YUUUPDEEEEDOOOO".

4) Where the fuck is the ending chord at the very end of WAREHOUSE?
Dave-chord like they play live...anyone with a bagby with Warehouse
should know of what i speak...the UTTAD version of Warehouse leaves
me....

cap over his eyes and a fully buttoned up flannel. head was hanging
down , looked tired and confused. this was pre-show. during the show
he seemed fine...especially for the blunts that were laid at his
feet...he said" Man, i'm gonna' get fucked uuupp..." needed a break
it seemed...all postive vibes towards our friend....

understand why people instantly love him without him having to earn
their respect first...very cool vibes though...he just wanted to
chill out pre-show...got a haircut...bought new clothes just for the
show...i tried to convince him to wear his cowboy hat...but he said
"then you won't see my dreads , man"...i said.."are ya' gonna grow
'em down to your waist?"....Boyd smiled a HUGE smile and said "that
would be...." then we sat in silence while his dreads were waxed and
we chill-ummed a few breaths...* *

which was about a 15 minute wait....i hear this rapping sound
comming up the ele-shaft..the doors open and Carter about hits me on
the head with his sticks..."Hey, whats up" says Carter and continues
to make everything he comes in contact with his DRUM!!!!! in my opinion
Carter is having the time of his life and also keeps up band morale...
he could go ANYWHERE.

animal in cool baggy clothes. the style master he is. never dropping
a beat while playing, always pushing the rhythm. Stefan lays low,
doesn't have a microphone but if you listen closely to his mellow,
soft-spoken voice, he'll make you laugh with the stories of his
adventures....bring him a funky-groovy-floppy hat and he'll love
ya' forever...

of all time. hangs in the shadows and speaks thru brass...listen to
him closely in a mellow jamhe's saying something....what is it?
we all understand him in the funky-hard-loud jams...but it's those
mellow ones that make me get chills of confusion.....

6)Shannon Worrell has a new band line up.

would be touring out to Colorado soon to Vail to open some shows for
Godstreet Wine. they will also be HEADLINING one nite out there.
pretty cool. Kristen said she's been playing drums for only 6 weeks.
she was offerd drum lessons by many a Charlottesville musician but
declined saying" NOOOOOOO, no numbers, no counting, i can FEEL the
beat!!!!!" Kristen rules. she is also singing of course.

yea, your'e thinking a 3 female band named that???? but it is named
after Shannon's Russian distortion pedal called "The Big Muff"
because Shannon is now using a couple electric guitars as well. but
that name is only a rumor...though i know a few in strong favor of
it!!!(K.A.!!!!)

the other name is compltely crude and won't fly...it was created by
them live or partied with 'em you know how crazy fun they are and
this name is just a band to band type joke....

7) now to end on a serious note.

o.k. i hope you all find this info. useful and entertaining. didn't
mean to write so much but my brain has been overloaded tooooo looongg.
my eyes are red and my head has started to manufacture opium by itself.
nothing like a free dose of body made auto-opium to make you foggy
rather groggy. Peace to all. Lates.

11/11/94 Tree

messierb@ucsub.colorado.edu Thu Jan 19 19:44:44 1995

I am tired of WAITing for the seed for this tree, SO...
At the excellent suggestion of John, the fellow CU folk I have decided to
offer up another show as a subsitute for this tree. John has provided me
with a nice FAT sopy of the 3/10/94 show from The Fox here in Boulder.
It is a great show, adn since it was a west coast show few of you east
folks will have it already. Set includes a great #36, Nancy, Watchtower,
Halloween, etc. And as bonus a fat filler of Dave & Tim jamming out. SO
get to me and tell me what you think. I guess I will cut out all the
middle men, so if you were a branch you will be getting your seed from
me. So drop me a line and tell me what's up.

Peace & Out...

i know this is probably already a dead topic, but i get this shit digested and
i'm still awake from chapel hill expedition 1995 with keith...BTW, courtney is
not weird, but she scares the hell out of me...anyway, i don't post hardly
anything on the minarets...this may be my fifth post at the most...i don't
grovel, i don't flame, i just read the mail and respond privately to those who
have posted...i don't have any questions to ask, because all the right
questions are asked...what we have here is not unique...i have been on the list
for i'm-not-sure-how-long-now, but i do not feel left out of the seemingly
insignificant things that seem to pop up on the .net...i just ignore them and
they go away :)...for those that do seem alienated or something, just fucking
post something to the minarets...someone always responds and someone always
reads it...this is not a family, this is a group of people who share a love of
DMB...what we have here is not unique...what we have here is *not* unique...

House of Blues???

lsemple@lobster.mis.udel.edu Thu Jan 19 20:11:19 1995

Looking through my new Rolling Stone today, I saw an ad for a new TBS
show sarting Jan 27 that will be showing on Fri./Sat. nights at Midnight
eastern/9:00 Pacific time. the show is live from the House of Blues.
the show on the 27th is Sheryl Crow and Hootie and the Blowfish. It
thought it was an interesting idea, and then I started reading the bands
alond the side, seeing names like Blues Traveler and the Spin Doctors,
and then, no, couldn't be, yes, the Dave Matthews Band, live in concert
on TV!!!! I couldn't believe it. It's kinda weird, but I still think it
will be better than the video idea.

back to my clique post... people, especially my dearest rick, have taken it
out of context... i am not saying that it is evil, i'm not even saying it's
wrong. how could i when i spent 4 days in richmond in december?? when i
spend a significant amount of online time tagging with clare or a drunken
c"b"b? i dunno i dunno. the silliness on the net is not what i was
commenting on, silliness is necessary for happy citizens, but i guess there's
something beyond the actual posts to minarets that i'm trying to get at. a
few people have actually asked me if sending clare mail introducing
him/herself would be out of line... to which i replied... i might be a bit
odd, but how could it be out of line? clare is just a person. a woman. a big
fat dummyhead.

'might not be right for you but it's... riiiiiight for me' i think everyone
should listen to sarah mclachlan.

oh, and another thing I forgot. Thank you to Ben for bringing up my
observation. It was his random mailing me a few months ago that answered
many of my dave and minarets questions, and I
think should be a model for how we treat newbies on our net. pppps, ben

yes, but that was only because your name was ben. :)

Stero Review of DMB

EDOHERTY@MACALSTR.EDU Thu Jan 19 23:42:21 1995

I don't know if this has been posted or not, hit return a few times if it has.
Even if someone posted, not everyone read it, hopefully.

----------------------

STEREO REVIEW, February 1995, p.140

Under The Table and Dreaming

Just when it seems that there's nothing new under the sun, along comes the Dave
Matthews Band, comprising of singer/songwriter/guitarist, violin and saxophone
virtuosos, and a precision-tooled rhythm section with both rock power and jazz
finesse. Pound for pound, this band from Charlottesville, Virginia, features
some of the best musicians around. Working in a style of their own
devising--if it touches on any genre at all, it probably comes closest to the
neo-hippie ethos of bands like Blues Traveller and Phish, they've built a
Deadhead-loyal following from the ground up by touring clubs and making
converts one town at a time on the strength of their smart, committed,
gimmick-free music. Matthews is a lucid dreamer and idealist whose folk-jazz
forays call to mind Bruce Cockburn, another square peg who wins fans with a
combination of artistry and perseverance. He and his band are a marketing
specialist's nightmare; I certainly wouldn't know which record-store bin to
file them in, and that's one of the reasons I like them so much. The music in
"Under the Table and Dreaming," their second album, unfolds with almost
classical precision, providing tight frameworks onto which the soloists get to
drape some striking coloration. It's very musicanly stuff, somewhat at odds
with the ramshackle spirit of rock, but it can be absorbed and appreciated on
its own iconoclastic, uncrompromising terms. (Parke Puterbaugh)

----------------- (taken w/o permission and with my own typos)

There you have it. I think its a pretty good review, and I think he picks up
on a lot of what DMB is about.

Peace! Eric Doherty "edoherty@macalstr.edu"

House of Blues TV

hauser@server.chem.ufl.edu Fri Jan 20 08:22:17 1995

In the most recent Sports Ilustrated there was an ad for a new show coming
out on Fridays on the cable channel TBS. It looks like it'll be taped live
shows from the House of Blues bar. Which HoB I don't know. BUT, the inter-
esting point to note was that the list of scheduled performers to appear
included the Spin Doctors, Blues Traveler, and the Dave Matthews Band!!! I'd
imagine that those HoB shows in New Orleans Feb 15-17 are gonna be taped for
this new show. The show premiers Jan 27 at midnight with Sheryl Crow and
Hootie and the Blowfish. As the announcer would say,"Check your local
listings..." Sounds pretty cool, anybody else heard anything about this??

Later,
Brian

Re: tower theatre setup

l_leclai@hamlet.uncg.edu Fri Jan 20 08:58:02 1995

The Tower general admission section is almost exactly a year old. They
took out the first 20 rows or so of seats, and let people just mill
around. I've never seen it too crowded up there, but I'd say, you may as
well get there early. The gen ad section at Tower is about as big as the
entire TLA.

Enjoy the show!
-Dash :)

 hey-
i've never been to tower and I have the genadm seats in the front. i'm
wondering how they are set up, and whether or not I'll have to get their
early. also, how big is it. i've been to tla a few times, and that's pretty
 thanx, bighead c.

Re: Pre-DMB

I was just told by my friend that he is getting
a recording of a live show. The group, that at this
point I don't their name, contains Dave and
members of the group now known as Rusted
Root! This band was formed before DMB. Does
anybody know about this group and what they
are called, or is this just a bunch of crap? Any
and all info would be greatly appreciated.

my guess would be the -bunch-of-crap- theory

where RR opened for Dave and sometimes the two bands (or part of them)
jammed/played together?...That's just my guess.

Digest length??

There has been talk about this for awhile and recently I've been
approached again to shorten the digests.

Is this reasonable to everyone? Good.

Suggestions of the length (# of lines) or time period?

Good day, eh?

CHDEICHERT@DAVIDSON.EDU Fri Jan 20 12:49:29 1995

I figure this message will scream "NEWBIE!!!" anyway, so I'll go ahead and
say it. Yes, I am new to the net (first post, yahoo); yes, I am also
relatively new to DMB, even though I saw them at Davidson last year and this
summer at the Masquerade Music Park in Atlanta (I don't remember this one
besides hearing "Tripping Billy" because my psycho friends had encouraged me
to get wasted with them, and so I did--good one).
BUT I have seen the light (probably comes with widening my taste with Frente!
and, of course, PHiSH, so there's still hope for me. (Thanks, by the way, to
Will Foy, who lives on my hall and on this digest :), for unwittingly
exposing me to good music).
heard that this is a (relatively) small .net, so it's kind of disappointing
that it would have a cliq as described. Hopefully it's not big enough to
keep people off.
Anyway, I'll be interjecting my questionable opinions from time to time, so
please bear with me (it's not my fault, the Army did it to me :).
Oh, yeah--if any generous soul out there wants to help celebrate my 'virgin'
post by helping me find a hq recording of PHiSH at Boone, NC (10/26/94), my
first _good_ concert (that I remember, anyway), lemme know and I'll send you
my (short but growing) list.

What do you think, sirs?

Somebody last night brought up the point of how no two snowflakes are alike and
I began to think about Granny. I've always believed there to be no two
versions of Granny alike, and every show I've heard has confirmed this. Many
of my friends have concurred, but what I want to know is what do you think?
Does anybody out there know of or possess two or more Bagby's with the same
version of Granny (tm)? I realize that there are no "identicle" versions of
any song, songs are different everytime they're played, I'm seeking two
identical versions _lyricly_. So let me know what's up. Some day I would like
to know just how many different sets of lyrics exist, but that would be
impossible for now. If this works out maybe I'll do the same for a pre-UTTAD

The Samples in VA

kadams@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Fri Jan 20 13:07:08 1995

Just a note to let one and all know that THE SAMPLES will be playing in
Lexington at the W&L Pavillion (NOT Zollman's Pavillion) on Friday,
February 3rd. Tickets will be $10 because all proceeds (that don't pay
for the band) will go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. PLEASE
COME! I am co-chair of entertainment so I need to get multitudes o'
people to show up. And, so this post wont be totally devoid of Dave
related stuff, we thought about getting DMB but they cost too much. So
there! Anyway, if you want to find out any more info, e-mail me
personally. For those of you that might have heard of BHP (Big Hairy
Posse), they will be opening. It's W&L's very own bunch of musically
inclined students, alums, and, uh, slackers. Anyway, they've played here
and at UVA, so come see the special reunion of the band with the really
bad name. Doors will open at 8:00. Samples go on at 10:30 ish (no
later). Later and muchos mahalos...

Well, we just got back. First off, sorry to all awaiting tapes, I have not
forgotten nor run off with them. Its a long story. They will all be out
this week. Second, I am in the process of working on the Edwin McCain
network. I'm looking for the guy who is trying to do this from Ham. Sid.
College. Kay and I talked over break and he gave me your name and i
remembered seeing it on the net. We seem to have the same Idea. I also
got a hold of the promo video for tripping billies that was made for RCA
promotion from a record store at home. It is pretty good and it is a
master copy that should copy well for others.
yall take care.

First to answer Bens quick question...
well
im going to the 14 with Clare and the the 15 with my girlfriend
hmmm that'll throw some people for a loop.....heheh

Second thought

heard that this is a (relatively) small .net, so it's kind of disappointing
that it would have a cliq as described. Hopefully it's not big enough to
 keep people off.
See...the whole thing was that the is no clique.....and that people
should not think we are one....
We were trying to keep people, newbies, whatever to not feel like they have
to say "soory for the waste of bandwidth, but" or thinhs like that.
this net has personality...thats why i like it...
if it just had chords, dates and tapes it would be boring....
I much rather read Chardy's incledibly humourous posts about VCU's lack
of adequate computer facilities or ben sterlings rambling about NYC
ticket problems.....
No one here thinks there better than anyone else...some of us just have
more knowledge than others...and are willing to share it...

Oh no

SAKUNZ@MIAVX1.BITNET Fri Jan 20 14:11:07 1995

Well, there I was last night about 2:55 pm EST, had a couple gin and tonics in
me, and was sitting at a friends house after a snowball fight. Well, her
housemates happened to be watching MTV alternative to what nation, and "What
Would You Say" video came on. Needless to say, I thought I was watching MTV
Sports, you know the high movement, short attention span type of television
programming. Anyways, I just thought that although seeing the Boyz on TV was
cool and everything, I didn't know if this was the best way to get them out to
the masses. That and the fact that Beavis and Butthead were on next "Hey
Beavis, this Dave Matthews guy is like weird because he's like always jumoping
around and stuff". "Yea, he sucks" :):):) Just my random thoughts for today,
