Alright. you guys have to be aware that many many high school kids are
part of this net and the more you insult them (not all high schoolers
think that satellite is the best song performed by dmb ever for example)
the fewer of them are going to stay loyal to dmb. Just a note, munch.

Hey Gray,
I'm 24 and I am currently working at a law firm in DC. I went to the
recent Bender show and for the first time felt old at a concert. I saw
Phish in Philly a couple days before and although the crowd was also
young it seemed to be fairly mature and attentive to the music.
I would like a copy of the NYE show if I am one of the chosen.

I'm 21, just graduated from college, and in the working world. At the
moment, I'm a professional peon and assistant editor (just in a Highly
Technical Computer Company), but I think my true profession is writer and
generally opinionated person.
Great question-- I'd love to know how old most of these people are. And
how come it's high schoolers who jump up and down and scream and lose their
minds for "satellite." Actually, how come anybody loses their mind when
listening to "satellite."

those crazy kids... calling all musical cancers...
NebuIous@aol.com Thu Jan 5 16:06:04 1995
of course some teenagers have good musical tastes...
ben pops into mind.....but if you are the exception, thats cool
heh heh, i just wanted to quote that so anyone that missed it could be caught
up... heeee heee...
..when sattelites is played, some people chill and listen, and some
people lose their fucking minds....
this is true... losing your 'fucking mind' can be done in many ways,
though... it just so happens that stupid kids (which CAN INCLUDE YOU COLLEGE
PRICKS TOO! heh heh) tend to let being stupid and inconsiderate their 'way'
to lose their 'fucking mind'
BY THE WAY...
I have an idea! I think we should start a dave cover band of anyone that's a
cancer. heh heh. see, here's the deal... i'm a cancer, we rock... clare is
a cancer... emily is a cancer... emily told me that chardy is a cancer,
though i guess i can't say this for sure... the way i see it, i play guitar,
i think chardy plays some form of drums, and the gals can just sing whatever
the fuck they want. any bass playing cancers out there? how about (yeah
right) a violin or sax?
we can all practice at my house. since we're all on the same wavelength and
crap like that, we wouldn't need to practice all that much... and then when
dave plays msg, we could open...
:)
happy armenian christmas eve... i think...
ben
btw... 'everything' rocks! happy happy music.
just another memo from the cellar,

I would like for everyone to take a long hard look at cjs's message (below) and
try to understand that these screaming little fans probably mean as much
to Dave as do the rest of us. Then, after you read his message, go to
the nearest and next DMB show and shake hands with the youngest fan
you can find and offer to make them a bagby. Later!

touring around Syracuse, Ithaca, and somewhere else. Just to calm the
masses, can anyone give me any info?

That way, nobody can capture me.....They can use the hell out of me, but
there ain't too much they can do to me. They can mess me up, play the

it is, is a tone...So I'm gonna come back as a note.

why the bass?
Sara.E.Burch@dartvax.dartmouth.edu Thu Jan 5 17:42:55 1995
i strongly condone the recent commentary on the changing aura at dave shows.
am i the only one that attributes this to the pounding bass that rca has
given dave and fans alike? i couldn't hear much of anything at fox or bender,
due to the booming new dynamic?!?#@! sound of dmb. i felt myself a guest at
an MTV dance party, as this certain pounding encompassed the audience. i
don't get excited about hearing dave on kicker boxes and bazooka tubes when i
go home next summer. i'm not looking to be critical as much as i'm looking
for an answer. :-)
does anyone have a tape of last summer's dave/tim reynolds jam at the
birchmere? i'd like to trade for it.
saying goodbye,

its not a big stretch.......(sort of)
up in a fire when ben was...lets see..ben was 1)...it says
i was born at 11:57pm on 20JUN.....
but _first_ of all.....my mom said her watch (set to some form

it 21JUN when i was "released"
i was born in the central time zone.....
and everyone else on the list...ben..clareemily...
..cha...etc....whoever else...is in eastern....so i
was born at 12:57am, edt, once it was already 21JUN.......

i like to have my parties with hats and blowey things on 20JUN, which
is gemini, but that must be close enough.....and next year, ill do it
on 21JUN....a cancer hat party....
and if *that's* not goood enough...i play bass
i just can't focus on school yet .......
how about (yeah right) a violin or sax?
shit ...we can do this...
so people can hear what he can do live, etc....and who thinks i
should not do it, because it would be generally a pain in the ass..?
just curious...ive had two people give me both sides on their

More Publicity...
mwebber Thu Jan 5 18:55:52 1995
Besides CNN, MTV, and USA Today, there is a cool little article in the
Feb. issue of Guitar Player (p.19) Neato. Actually saw the video last
night and thought it was pretty cool (air time 1:40 EST)
Also if this age thing is becoming such a big issue, then we wont have a
problem taping the Richmond shows...how you ask? Well while the mosh pit
is going on during Tripping Billies we can bring in the stroller
(someone elses idea I know,) while everyone is distracted. Ive been told
that there is a stroller section by the board for the newest and youngest
of DMB fans...then while everyone is either making out ('This is our song
honey') or waving lighters in the air we can set up shop! That is unless
some tyke has his 'My First Sony' DAT, or PlaySchool Deck mooched in
there first by giving a bribe of some bubble gum and a Pete Rose baseball
card to Jeff...
I really dont care how old anyone is just as long as they didnt have too
much red Kool-Aid before the show and are so hyper they start to bother
me. I know it is impossible to sit still during a DMB show but show some
respect...there ARE people behind you!!!
I guess thats it...
Kyle when do you leave?

Ruminations on the video
HFEJP@utxdp.dp.utexas.edu Thu Jan 5 19:54:11 1995
Howdy all.
I'm back in Tejas after 10 glorious snowy days up (relatively) north. For
those who have yet to see the video and don't want to wade through hours of
Boyz II Men like I did trying to catch it these past few weeks, I believe it
is on a pretty set rotation on MTV. Go to bed at a decent hour (10:00 or so
since this is break time), and set your alarms for 1:45 am eastern time. I
caught it three times while I was home at this same exact spot -- During the
"Dream Time" show. (Brett, darling, I know you can stay up this late).
Some quick thoughts since I didn't see too much chatter about it in the 172
much like a bad Peter Gabriel video rip-off to me. I had brief nightmare
visions of it ending up on Beavis and Butthead (although that show does amuse
me at times, I don't want to hear what they have to say about the harlequin
makeup). But after seeing it again and then taping it, I have to say that it
did grow on me. I thought the brief live band/crowd shots did a passable job
at capturing the spirit of a show, and of course I'd watch this any day over
Bon Jovi's new one, so... we'll see if it moves out of Dream Time.
Anyway, happy '95 to all.

Now, down to bussiness, I need Max Point sheets! I am in dire need of at
least two Max points sheets to send my little points in. If anyone can
hook me up with these I will spin you your choice of a tape from my huge
and crispy Phish collection. And for the hell of it I will spin the
first 3 people who respond some tapes if they send me blanks.
Peace & Out...

the really cool thing is Carter's drumroll-type stuff during the break section
(even though Boyd sounds SO out of tune).
it ends, not on the suspended chord (as on UTTAD), but on a nice resloution in

#34 has had words as long as i've ever heard the song,
which was why those netters who were present over the summer
upon hearing that #34 would be on the album (not #36 as one
would have expected) that, indeed, #34 would be in instrumental.
i'm still shocked that the words weren't sung on the album,
but then again,
the album version of #34 is about
two minutes shorter than the song is usually.
maybe this has something to do with it.
this, as well, should be in the faq.
PLEASE make sure you read your faq's.
they kick ass with the info and lots
of people have worked very hard on them

For those looking for the video, try catching Darcy's Music on VH1 if you
get it. It was on a few nights ago and that is how I caught it.
It totally reminded me of Peter Gabriel, too, BTW, but I liked it.

Actually, you only need one Max Point sheet because they allow
photocopied sheets to be sent in.

I am so excited that I can't wait. Tickets don't go on sale until
1/20 according to the Landmark office. Ticketbastard here in

And btw, cjs is right on about this fan thing. The best thing to

according to my birth cert., (which, incedently, burned

i was born at 11:57pm on 20JUN.....

it 21JUN when i was "released"
i was born in the central time zone.....

The entire tour is a co-headlining tour, meaning both bands will receive
equal billing in every city they play.
For those who insist on heirarchies (or on knowing how late they can arrive
and still catch DMB....), DMB will close the show for all eastern dates,
which includes all dates listed in the "Pt.1" tour dates.

DMB & BHT co-headlining?
toddb@udel.edu Sat Jan 7 20:57:37 1995
Whilest i was on South Street today, i heard a radio promo about the
Tower theatre show. The radio guy clearly said, (insert radio anouncer
voice here..) "Big Head Todd!!!!!! with david matthews band.." and some
other band which I don't remember. Also of note was the fact that they
played BHT snippets, but I didn't hear any dave. Alas! My point here is
that it definately sounded like BHT was the headliner. Anyone else?
On a totally unrelated note, the sandwich i got after standing in the line
where i heard the promo was the best sandwich i ever had in my WHOLE
life. Turkey with cole slaw and rusian dressing on wheat. It gets the
TB seal of approval. I strongly reccommend it.

these bands are unusually large in New York. I find your tone rather rude.
Besides, you are the one that just a day or two ago was reminding me that

Just wanted to say hello to all the DMB netters out there. This is my

uncool? Anyway, I hope to be on again soon b/c there's a lot of cool stuff

corresponding with you and talking about Carter and what a fuckin' bad ass
drummer he is and just about drums, music, life, liberty and the pursuit of

Hey Ben T--we just checked out your web page . Sound and pics are AWESOME.

Anyone who can, definitely should take a moment to appreciate the

til you've been there. Kudos.
Gray--I was confused by the Feb 4 NY show. Thought they were in Boston.
Do you know something new???

NEW SONG, STING, AND PAUL SIMON
MOOREC@engr.engr.scarolina.edu Sun Jan 8 17:08:09 1995
December and I have not had a chance to read all of the posts, but I
did scan through a lot of them and I was suprised to see that no one
mentioned what I think was a new song that was not only played in
Charlotte on the 29th but was created there. Dave asked the crowd
if it would be alright if they just jammed for a minute. What he
played on the guitar part was very repetitive and I didn't watch him
really close, but I didn't see him even change chords. He then begin
to sing something and he seemed to be making it up as he went because
he repeated something over and over. After it was over with, someone
from the crowd asked what it's name was and he thought for a minute
and then said something which I could not understand. If anyone has
any info. about this please write me back. I would love to get this
tape if anyone has it. After the show I heard Carter say that
they were soon going to be touring with Sting or Paul Simon or both of
them, but if this is true I can not imagine that I am the only one
who has heard this and I do not know why I am the first one to
mention it. Anyway I've been sitting in front of this computer for
way to long.

Jimi Thing single
Tagans@aol.com Sun Jan 8 17:14:54 1995
In Billboard magazine with the Year in Video cover, the music reviews section
reviewed Jimi Thing. It said the song was avaliable on cassette single.
with the sax solo at the end left off entirely. I wonder if the cassette
single does the same thing.
Don't remember much about the review other than it said UTTAD was an
"underappreciated album."

no two versions of say goodbye, still to this day, are teh same.
i heard it twice last weekend and both times it was useless to sing
along to any of teh verses. they weren't the same.
regardlesss... you might be able to decipher the lyrics froma particular

any formal lyrics... sorry...
(i think [correct me if i'm wrong rick] but that the version that's in
the lyrics file was because it was a) a lyrically kickass version of the
song, and b) also it is from when the song was still referred to as
'quick lay and goodbye'. anyone? anyone?)

he came back to my house and drank some beers and played nintendo with my

anwyas ive rambled on about edwin before....his Watchtower rocks also...

The Jimi Thing single is a promo-only piece, not available for sale. The CD
version (provided by RCA directly to radio stations) is the edited version
(with the sax solo removed). There are also two cassette singles, both
featuring WWYS and Jimi (full CD version on both); one of these was given
away free in west coast stores for a breif period in December.
Anyway, the only edited version is on the radio single, which also has the
full CD version, plus All Along The Watchtower (Recently EP version) and
Christmas Song (R2T version).

Man, talk about a run-on sentence...just exhale, you'll get rid of hot

Dave Matthews Band show.... who gives a rat's ass. So what if a

'mature' age. More power to the younger generation. Why can't you

help yourself.
First off, there's NOT an age limit on the shows, it's just that it sometimes
gets annoying when the little kids start moshing and running into people who
came to "enjoy the music", not wrestle. Secondly, you obviously have a very
broad definition of "freak"...who are you to call anyone a freak...go join the
KKK or something, I hear they share the same feelings toward "freaks" as you.
this negative shit but all I read off this list is a bunch of
candyasses bitching about anything and everything. I might be a

Actually, this quote, help me out minaretters(spelling) if I'm wrong, seems
to be referring to narrow-mindedness...how it can keep you from seeing what's
really out there...or something like that (sorry, guys, it's early). anyway,
you're right, you ARE a hypocrite...calling people freaks who you don't even
know hardly qualifies you as OPEN-MINDED. Go rent a video on monkeys or
some form of primate that leads a very active lifestyle...soon you'll find
yourself smiling and you'll probably find it in yourself to make an apology
to everyone on this net, who, because they are open-minded, will accept, and
go about their merry way, like happy little monkeys.

This makes me sad
kadams@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Mon Jan 9 10:43:47 1995
Well, well, well... if this net hasn't become bitter. I'm not talking
about any particular people either. First off, I could say that I've
been on this net longer than most of you have been in college, but then,
that would call for all of you to proceed to bitch me out, telling me
that there`s nothing wrong with new fans, etc. ,etc... Well you're
perfectly right. There is nothing wrong. The more the merrier. I mean,
what the fuck was that comment about that guy calling us freaks and
someone replying that he should go join the KKK??? If you all would
bother using, oh, context clues maybe you wouldn't be so quick in yanking
a random word out of someone's post and bashing them. Sure he used the
word freaks, I think I'm intelligent to figure out what he meant. Jeez,
people say things when they're blowing off steam. And also this teeny
bopper thing has gotten way out of line. It's not a question of age.
Period. I know plenty of college kids and graduates that are moshing
fuckups, for lack of a more appropriate term. And yes, some of our
younger friends do that too. Let's just say they are concert etiquette
impaired. Too many trips to Lollapalooza if you ask me. Anyway, I'm
sure many of you would like to make some big nasty comment on something
I said, take it way out of context, andmake yourself look like a badass,
but please direct these comments to me, personally. Please spare the
rest of the net from this bullshit, and have some respect for others. For
some (that was SOME, not ALL, got it?) of you, these keyboards offer you
some twisted sense of power, huh? Probably if you had met the person that
you are currently yelling at at some Dave show a year or two ago, you all
would be talking about that really cool show way back when, deciding when
to trade tapes, and telling drunken tales of hanging out with Carter and
the boys last New Year's eve, but I digress. I've said enough.
Sometimes it's really disconcerting to see how cruel people can be. Oh,
and for those of you that think this was directed toward or originated
from a particular persons post, you are right. About 100 or so since
about spring of `94. Later.
Katharine Adams

into what i hoped it wouldn't. Excluding people on net, and others that listen
to the music because it emtionally moves them. I'm just afraid that DMB if
turnoing into a fad. Got i hate to fuckin; say it but it's true. I have not
been to a show since the video came out but i suspect it is even worse, now.
Everywhere i go people say cool hat(DMB tobogan hat), and say that video's
awesome. I hate to sound like i'm better than them, but they have no idea what
the music is about and act like die hard fans. Fuck i know i sound like i'm
back talking but my concern is toward the overall enjoyment of the music for
the fans as well as the band. If i was Dave i'd flip if people started moshing.
Grow up, and enjoy. In a sense i feel to blame because i ayways told people
about DMB when they had a small following and now it is,(atleast for me) to
much of a following. Can anyone say influence of RCA and BIG BUSINESS. So to
help i no longer tell people about the band. Hell it might do nothing, and it
might be top late. I just want it to be back to the way it was a few years ago.

someday?
At our local K-Mart, they have this thing where you can push a button and
watch a 30 second clip from a video or film. The selection varies from
month to month. When I was there yesterday, they had a video clip from
"What Would You Say" right there between Des'ree and Boys II Men. Weird.
Lastly, I want to apologize for helping to fuel the great age debate. I
took things out of context and was generally bad. Sorry.

questions about rhyme or reason
vastolj@alleg.EDU Mon Jan 9 11:18:23 1995
or reason has changed since it's beginning? i know i don't have the first time
it was played but i do know i have a copy of it in it's beginning form....dave
plays it solo opening on 1.19.93. at the end of the song he says something
like, "i don't know that one either" or something like that. The lyrics to
that version and 3.23.93 or pretty similar but when you compare them to a more
recent version, say the cd, they are worlds apart. Come to think of it, there
aren't many of the same words in the 1.19 or 3.23 version and the cd version at
all. i only have 5 or 6 versions of the song so i can't follow it's
transformation too well, but i was wondering if there was a middle version
between these 2 that i've mentioned...or even a version that was different
before 1.19.93.
winter, between, i think it was rick and spice...if i am wrong i
apologize....but i do remember part of it had to do with rhyme or reason,
wasn't it? i know there was more to it but i thought rhyme or reason was in
their somewhere....

Moshing?

I am a big fan of DMB, but I have never been to a show(how embarrassing!).
Anyway, I was just curious, what song would people mosh to at a Dave
show? I guess moshing can be a tad annoying if you're groovin' to
a tune and someone puts their size 12s in your butt. I remember when
I was at the Univ. of Pittsburgh, they had this band that we used to
see all of the time called "The Affordable Floors." People used to
mosh to one of their songs called "Wedding Ring," and we used to run
for the hills. One time a waitress was caught just as the song started
and ended up in the middle of a feeding frenzy. Man, it was ugly.
Here's hoping there are some considerate, sensitive moshers out there.
How about the highland fling instead?

Unsubscribing
cumm@uxa.ecn.bgu.edu Mon Jan 9 15:37:54 1995
I've been trying to unsubscribe, but I cannot do it. This is what
I've been doing, tell me if it's wrong..
Unsubscribe Minarets
If this is wrong, someone please tell me. I'm sick and tired of
everyone bitching and moaning about every little thing. And also
that one letter that started all of the flames is a guy from my
school. In some ways he is totally right! As a matter of fact, in
most ways he was totally right!

I'm looking to get together with other guitarists in the DC area who
would like to get together for some laid back jamming. Right now the
music I listen to & play the most- Phish, DMB, G.Love & Special Sauce,
& Nirvana.

UTTAD in BMG!!
sseremet@uvm-gen.EMBA.UVM.EDU Mon Jan 9 18:07:58 1995
Hey there all -
UTTAD. I saw its cover on one of those pages of "stamps" they send to new
people to seduce them into becoming members. I'm sure you all know those
10 for the price one deals. Well anyway, just thought I'd tell you it's
not often I like their new material - It'd make me sign up if I didn't
have the album yet.

Re: MINARETS digest 412
SLY@SLUVCA.SLU.EDU Mon Jan 9 19:18:33 1995
HEY guys, I am still here, just chillin' with a few new tapes...what is
all this _shit_ I see in our digests? From some guy telling _US_ to quit
bitching-I live in Missouri(yes, there is more than farms here) and am so
psyched when I see a new little tidbit on our band or someone who mentions
a new(or just improved) part of a song. Maybe alot of you will think it is
uncool, but I suggest we just drop this topic-it is obviously another one
of those BORED people who _LOVE_ pissing other people off! Give him hell
and ignore him...if it happens again, lets _ALL_ send a copy of the lyrics
file to his mailbox, along with the FAQ, maybe even throw in the Dead lyrics
file-you know....until he wont be able to login? Just ignore him, if he
still doesn't get it, LETS BOMB HIS ASS! Sorry to all you guys who are
pacifists-but this is so uncool(not to mention simply DUMB).
What do you guys think-we could all get together if it happens again-but
chances are he wont read all of our bitching at him, unless it is private
mail. In a nutshell, let's keep the net free of bitching, and FULL of our
little disecting of each and every aspect of the band.
This was just my two-make any flames constructive(please).

Mother Hips
eahofstede@ucdavis.edu Mon Jan 9 19:52:12 1995
I just obtained twenty five new Mother Hips tunes which are studio
outtakes all of which are unreleased. Of friend of mine is close to the
band and somehow got a hold of the material. For those back east who
might be unfamiliar with the Mother Hips, they are definitely the coolest
band out her in northern California. They hail from Chico, Ca. and their
self produced cd is to be released nationwide on Feb. 14. You may be
aware of the band through AWARE which sets up booths at the HORDE shows
and pushes bands like DMB, Jackopierce, etc. If anyone is interested
write me back and we can work some kind of trade, if not when presented
the opportunity check out the Mother Hips you will definitely enjoy
them.

YES....you send me your powermac, and ill send you my outdated LCII..
no just kidding....
you will need JPEGview or some other picture viewer to look at the gifs..
these should be available somewhere to ftp, although i dont know where..
to hear the sounds you need SoundMaster..which is available at netspace.org.
if you access the sounds through the html page
did and its a great little program. JPEGview is realatively easy to find
i think....check on school macs, thats where i get alot of neato programs.
I know Ben Tanen can tell us what netspace has. check /pub/software (i
think) next time you ftp....

as to all the recent bickering.....my arms _can_ reach around the country
and if anyone continues with anger i _will_ show up at your doorstep and
hug you till you giggle or toot. :)
yep, i said toot
jeez that's a pretty big hug eh?
i've asked this before but i'll ask again.
anyone know what harmonica peter is playing on so much to say?
has anyone's power gone out so that the blinking time is the correct time?
does that mean that my alarm went out exactly at 12?
boy i'm confused.
a smile from clare vs. a smile from a girlscout?
hmmmmmmmmm
clare, that girlscout was pretty darn cute.....heh heh
oh, i still haven't seen the video yet but my granny says she has. i
think she's just trying to spite me because i won't take her to a show.
and she's dying to hear the song named after her.....:)
really tight hugs and really messy lollipop goo in my beard
