man the harpoons, damn the phoam is thick...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Wed Dec 28 19:22:37 1994

dec 28th???????????

i told you to let me sleep for two hours, NOT TWO WEEKS!!!!!!!

but i quote the animaniacs....

BOINGY, BOINGY, BOINGY........

and before i say anything important, on the subliminal bidding of chardy,
here's an imprint of my right eye, which was cut open, and subject to three
hours of poking and prodding of the skilled uva surgical staff hands for the
sake of having steel plates removed that look a little like this-- o-o-o

not quite as dramatic as chardy's forehead, but hey, maybe i'm not as exciting
as chardy.

i got a watch for christmas. i hope everyone faired as well. i like my watch.
but actually, the highlight of my christmas would be silly putty. i never had
silly putty when i was a wee young 'n. by the way, clare wants to know if
silly putty melts. anyone have any experiences on the subject? mail clare
personally if you've ever melted silly putty. or if you know how to get glow
in the dark silly putty to glow, send her a note. don't send me a note. mine
doesn't glow. so i don't care.

actually, clare just burnt the silly putty. according to her it made a
"zoozzuurrrooo" kind of sound when it started to sizzle.

tee hee.

the pain killers are fun. last night when i crashed i started watching my
brain paint images on the backs of my eyelids. saw the sun explode into
many small iddy biddy stars. sort of like the intro to buck rogers. you
know?

just wanted to let everyone know that my face is allright. (not that anyone
besides clare, boofy, ben, chardy, and a couple of others knew that anything
was wrong with my face.)
file requests will be processed when i get back to school, sometime on (or a
day or two before) the eighththththt.

there's bubbles in here right now. clare getting giddy....

file requests will be processed _next_ week. if you are waiting for the faq
or lyrics file, keep waiting. (acutally, I'M NOT EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE GETTING
FAQ REQUESTS!!!!!ALEX?????AAAAALEEEEEEX??????????????????????????????????????)

well, i'm gonna take some more (legally prescribed) opiates and watch the
moon change colors........

tata....

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Wed Dec 28 19:28:54 1994

i was talking the other day to a character who knows a bit about the
richmond symphony and all (no, this horse is not dead, it's just been
in the stables for a couple of weeks), and the ban against taping is
based on the symphony players being unionized or something like that.
i'm not really sure. anyway, looks like all joking aside, there ain't
gonna be no taping whatsoever by us paying custormers type people, so
if you want to hear dmb with the richmond symphony, either go to one of
the shows, or pray, pray, pray that the symphony will release the
show. the gist of the conversation i had led me to believe that the
people in charge of the symphony will be recording the show, and that
if they want to release it, they can.

DMB on CNN

acox@s850.mwc.edu Thu Dec 29 01:26:53 1994

There's been recent talk of the new video on MTV, then the possibility of
an interview with Dave on NPR... Today, of all places, I saw Dave on
CNN - it was part of "Showbiz today" or Showbiz minute," something like
that, I don't watch enough CNN to know.

The piece lasted only a few seconds, showed scenes from the WWYS video,
and showed Dave talking - I'm not sure about what, I couldn't believe I
was even seeing this.

Anyway, they'll probably be showing the same footage for another couple
of hours, I don't know when they show new stuff. I saw it at a little
before 6:00 this evening, so you have a good chance to see it. I'm still
shocked as hell...

12.28.94 setlist

KOLIVER1@UA1VM.UA.EDU Thu Dec 29 11:06:15 1994

ok-- again, after sleep and a 1 hour drive, this time, here's the list
but with a couple of blanks (again).....

12.28.94 Boutwell Municipal Auditorium, Birmingham, AL
From Good Homes opened

?*, One Sweet world, song that jane likes, best of what's around, rhyme and
reason, satellite, tripping billies, ??**, dancing nancies, warehouse,
lie in our graves, jimithing***, lover lay down, recently****, (he called this)
Come dance with me (after the show), Ants Marching

* for some reason i only can remember that he did play a song before
one sweet world, it was a slow one, but i cannot remember what it is called
** i don't think ive ever heard this song, but i was in the lobby...it's
possible that it was #36, but i know what that sounds like, ???
*** jimithing was cool,,,,,,solos for all but stefan.... i think it lasted abou
t 20 or 25 minutes
**** recently with 'drive my car' intro

show lasted nearly 3 hours again....not counting from good homes, who were
ok again.... wonderful jam to end, but sort of boring other than that

musically, this show was better than last night at the fox, but just barely,
b/c the fox rocked too.... or maybe i was just surprised, because i have
always hated boutwell. no, i wasn't just surprised, there were more solos,
and more extended jams....what can you say

halloween was especially cool, too.... i had asked him about that song the
night before in atlanta, and when i saw him after this show, he said "hey man
i hope you found something meaningful in halloween tonight, i just screamed my
fucking head off until i couldn't breathe anymore" in atlanta, he said that
he wanted to try to record it with steve, to get a "more demonic sounding
recording, it's an old love song, afterall, you know"

anyway, the funny thing about this was..... boutwell has only 1 entrance
to the floor, and those stairs are basically the only things lit up in the
place.... and when he started ants, i looked back, and the stairs, which were
empty before, were packed-- you could barely see thee lights, all the ants
came running in, and danced their little dances, and when the song was over, al
l the little ants marched back out, flooding the stairs once again. it was
really weird, i didnt know that many people could fit in the lobby. the floor
was about 1/2 packed before the song, and almost completely full during that
song....all doing it the same way, etc etc

the only way i have ever gotten silly putty to melt was by boiling it all
day in hot hot water....it does not mix with the water.

carter didn't know they were playing on the 15th, but bridget asked dave about
mentioning that we are driving to richmond for the show on v-day.... he sort-of

there were more females in the male's bathroom during intermission, than there
were males... mildly interesting

glad to hear your face is ok, rick...

well, that's the jist of it.... it was a fantastic show, sound wise

gotta go home for xmas, finally....

see ya in a week
ill update about the trees then.... not enough word yet

plus ive gotta get on the road-- im already 4 days late for xmas

hey all Minaretters or whatevers.

i'm in a bad mood. i was allowed back in the computer lab today, but
now i get dirty looks and i know they read all my mail now. fuck. all
for putting my foot on the keybaord. what if i strip down and sit on
the keyboard and calmly give my captors the bird. oh yea, that would
make them bubbling with joy. actually this whole thing like only
exists like it would in Calvins brain. gave me pops the "homicidal
psycho jungle cat" book treasury of Calvin and Hobbes. it was like i
gave him a million pesos. he likes to laugh and i think he relates
Calvin to my upbringing. imaginative monster. anyway.....

alrighty then....with that outta the way i shall be going to see

I really hope that this is the correct address to send postings. I am
wasting bandwidth and sincerely apologize but I am still in awe after
seeing DMB for the very first time this past Tuesday. Absolutely
incredible. And on my wy back to the car, I met BOYD for one very brief
but shining moment which was the best encore that could have ever possibly
been.

Now that I've encumbered you with that tale....if there is anyine who
would like to trade tapes, I've got several in my possession. I should be
getting a copy of the Fox Theater Atlanta 12/27/94 show if all goes well.

I will try to respond to as many people as possible, depending on the
response I get. I'm just getting started myself so I would relly love to
trade (DMB, BT, PHISH, a bit of ARU).

Watch out for an upcoming article about the Dave Matthews Band in
Tuesdays USA Today. In Fridays issue it mentions the upcoming article
about the best bands in 1994 which are not quite at the status of a Pearl
Jam (yet). It also has a promo picture of the boys. See ya all tonight
at Bender!!

Ps.- After the show catch Phish on Letterman in which the band will
perform a 1 hour rendition of Tweezer ;)

MEDICUS@UNIVSCVM.CSD.SCAROLINA.EDU Fri Dec 30 22:25:17 1994

I went to the Charlotteshow last night and I have a few things to say in review

I had not seen Dave in over two years, so it was an awsome concert needless to
say. I now understand the problems with the crowds much better. I made my way
up to the front but had to constantly worry about someone surfing onto my face.
The setlist seemed to be a slight break from what I have been reading and
listening to. Jimi Thing kicked ass and Recently was incredible as well(I
think it was recently last or second to last song before encore). Is Leroi
always so spaced out? Looked pretty stoned to me, but he did wail when he
needed to. My only real grovel with the concert was the one song encore. I
speculated that Dave was either still sick (complained of the flu) or pissed at
I loved it when dave started talking about the just say not to drugs bit in
bathroom thing, typical and beautiful davespeak, but very true at the same time
Well better be going, great show and I thirst to see him again with BHT.

someone send me a few spoons before i go to bed,

WOW!!! The band was very energetic and alive tonight. I was a little
disappointed early on because the setlist was identical to many from the fall
with the exception of the jam before Satellite. Dave said, "We're just gonna
jam for you a little bit." If you've heard the Williams College show from
last winter, Dave's riff sounded a lot like the live soundcheck they did
there. There were some words, but I'm listening to the tape now, and even on
headphones I can't make them out. Anyway, after Satellite the show SMOKED.
improvisation. From Tripping Billies til the end of the show, Carter did not
stop playing and the band went right into a very quiet #36 (my favorite), and
from there right into Ants Marching.
Lisner Auditorium was packed with a lot of teeny-boppers who were dropped off
by there parents. I saw seven junior high schoolers get out of mommy's
Mercedes right in front of the door. The youth of the crowd was a bit
annoying as was the fact no one got into the slow songs like Say Goodbye or
#36. Anyway, I thought the overall performance was outstanding (I haven't
seen them since August, but this show was much livlier than the ones I've
heard on tape from early October). Have fun to those of you going to
Richmond.
tonight and will have tapes of all four Phish shows soon.

Hey now,

Clare Emily and Buford said they'd write up a long review
of this, so I'm just gonna drop the setlist since I just got

considering it was my first knowing some Dave material.

Dave at NPR and the Bender setlist

72672.1776@compuserve.com Sat Dec 31 16:58:34 1994

ok.

ok.

first, i'd like to thank Boofy and Clare for making my friend Charlie feel at
home at the show. of course, it's hard to avoid warm fuzzies in the
presence of Dave Band...

the interview went very well. Dave commented on UTTAD being #34 on the
charts and selling 34,000 copies the first week with, "It's just a wILd kindA
ThiNG! It's not cosmic." a few other tidbits, but it'll all be on the air
(i'll post when i know when), so i won't go into it here. if anyone wants a
copy of the uncut interview (@ 30 minutes), i'd be happy to make copies.
just hang on til i get mine, and i'll let you know if the quality's worth it.

he was very excited about being at National Public Radio, cause he said he
listens all the time. thanks to Charlie for getting him on the air!

and the show, of course, was rockin. deciphered from Charlie's comments,

1. Seek Up
2. Best of What's Around
3. The Song that Jane Likes
4. Intro- Dancing Nancies
5. Say Goodbye
6. Rhyme & Reason
7. so called "Quiet Jam" into Satellite
8. ? not a new song [help us out on this one, Boofy]
9. Jimi Thing
10. Recently
11. True Reflections
12. Tripping Billies
13. Ants Marching

** 3 minutes of wild romping **

14. Christmas Song (just Carter and Dave)
15. All Along the Watchtower

unbelievable. if anyone has a copy of this show, i'm offering to spool my
copy of the unreleased Rutabega studio R2T outtakes for it. or anything else
you can find on my list.
well, that's enough for now. i'm gonna go consume about three plates of
Sagolla Special Spaghettis. mmmmmm.

laters, y'all,

just thought id add to the npr thing
npr, wherever i am, tends to run the only radio progamming that i respect
.. yeah yeah i occassionaly listen to a few of the alternative stations
But chances are, if im not groovin' on a live tape or a cd, im
checkin out NPR.
this was the case yesterday. i was sortof snoozin and sortof listening to
ALL THINGS CONSIDERED,nightly radio news. and what do i catch as musical
filler in between segments?? #34, just a few measures but by god,it
was #34! so someone on their production staff has good taste...least i
think so.
and then .. driving back from a friend's home, i got a chancce to hear
npr's WORLD CAFE. i ejected the tape and next thing i hear is "and from one
of 1994's best new bands WWYS from the DMB . and i was like wow..
this is a national program! (yeah so is MTV) but this version is not on
the cd,no Popper . . sounded like one of those in the studio live with
DMB thignys, or maybe it was the track from the video, which i have
yet to see.
and of course .. the next band to be showcased was RUSTED ROOT ..
all leaves me sayin' RIGHT ON NPR ..keep it up, and check it out
so on that note
HAPPY NEW YEARS FOLKS!

DAMNME ..still NPR

silly me for got the point of all her babble
GINGRICH and friends in congress are talking seriously of ending public
funding of both NPR and PBS ... ceasing the PUBLIC aspect of these radio
and tv stations, forcing them to become private entities.
IMHO - this sucks ass
so for any motivated folks out there that share this opinion, maybe its
worth writing our representives, clueing them in
just for goodness sakes, i hope the next thing on gingrich's list, besides a
few million in royalties from his soon to be written book, is not the
ceasing of public funding of the NEA.

sorry if ive offended - or if you dont feel i should use this list to
vent political frustrations. i dunno put "pox on me" .. i'll deal, theres a
cure! :)
now lets "CELEBRATE" -- kool and the gang?

Dave trades?

PM3737@ssu.southwest.msus.edu Sat Dec 31 21:55:09 1994

Several times I have posted messages enquiring if anyone wants to set up
some DMB tape trades. Although I have recieved a few responses, I am
still looking to do some trading.

I have the following shows and am looking for anything and everything else,
as long as it sounds good (most that I have seen do):

3/5/94 Craven's Hall TN One tape
6/26/93 Bayou DC 2+3
10/9/94 Lupo's RI all - 2 tapes
8/19/93 Wetlands NYC 1+2
Dave w/ Tim at Wetlands 1+2
10/26/93 Trax VA 1+2 Dave solo first part of set one!
12/10/93 Irving Plaza NY 1+2
7/27/93 The Flood Zone VA 1 tape

All of these are excellent quality.

I am looking for anything else and would prefer to do trades
of about five tapes, but anything is OK.

I also have 200+ hours of Phish and several G.Dead.

Let me know,
Brad

encores and putty

Uttad@aol.com Sun Jan 1 12:30:15 1995

ok--- this is keith..... i could not telnet to my own account, but i can use
my mom's account, right?.... nice screen name ma... anyway, a few
things........

first, the guy who said 1 song encores were a new thing.......maybe,,,,,,
voice isn't too fucked up, but he hasn't been playing too much recently, and
getting back into the swing of things is one thing, but when he just screams
his head off, according to him, it is nice to have a break before and after
the song, where he doesn't have to do anything on either side of the
screaming...... so i said, how about #34, 'ween for an encore..... he said
that would be cool, but he was happy with the way it turned out, and i was
too i guess, so i didn't have shit to say to that.

possible they make it different than they used to.... she couldn't do it.....
which either means that she didn't have it hot enough, or they make it
different.... whichever......
i guess the true answer to that is, .... its already melted..
it's solid form occurs when you leave it out for 3 months or so.,.......
havn't figured out the gas form though......

all for now..... i'll be here for three more days... so my address will be my
moms until the third..... then i go back to school... :(

i got three copies of the calvin&hobbes book.
give me the books all the time......

maybe ill get a tattoo of Grant or Franklin next....... oh wait..
who's on the $500, kennedy....? maybe a tattoo of kennedy, next

oh---- and i made my mom a tape from various shows.... her favourites......
pay for...., say goodbye, and halloween......
cool....

Hadn't heard eitehr in a while. Get In Line was incredible as usual. Dave
cam eout smoking a cigar right before midnite and did a little countdown
right befoer the started 36.
Met Shannon Worrell after the show, which was killer, she seemed a little
suprised that poeple had heard of her music and/or recognized her. Very,
very nice and pleasure to talk to.

nothing really random said or done in it. Someone got there tape deck
taken. The lines fro beer/mixed drinks were LONG and the bartenders were
easily influenced by cash, which i ran out of after the 54 ticket.

I did not tape, but i know it will surface soon enough. The rarities is a
little behind schedule, but will be done by the time teh rest of youal
get back from break, i have to leave tommorrow.

Happy New Year!

sseremet@uvm-gen.EMBA.UVM.EDU Sun Jan 1 16:35:38 1995

Happiest of New Years to everyone still around-
show and have a few decent tapes to trade if anyone would like to help me
out. I was not among the fortunate people who had the opportunity to be
there.
send you the cash or the tape(s), but I am soooo strapped right now.
Will it still be possible to pick up a copy of the CD and that show of
your band in a few weeks? Thanks -

happy new year & comments on nothing in particular

NebuIous@aol.com Sun Jan 1 17:23:11 1995

GINGRICH and friends in congress are talking seriously of ending public
funding of both NPR and PBS ... ceasing the PUBLIC aspect of these radio
and tv stations, forcing them to become private entities.
IMHO - this sucks ass

Well, everything newt does pretty much sucks ass. hee hee. anyway, though i
don't listen to the radio, i understand the importance of at least keeping
SOME quality stuff (or stuph if you swing it that way, kinda like phishnet
stockings) on the airwaves. At least in the big apple (bleh), radio is a
string of cheese rap and top 40 throwaways.

Lisner Auditorium was packed with a lot of teeny-boppers who were dropped
off
by there parents. I saw seven junior high schoolers get out of mommy's

NOW WILL YOU BELIEVE ME???? No one would believe me about the 12 year old
girls at Roseland... NO ONE! And now they've (practically) infiltrated
Virginia!!! AHHH HA HA HA HA HA! Okay, so it's not very funny, but if we
can't laugh at the downfall of everything sacred, what can we laugh at?

Glad to see everyone had fun at the shows, though my crappy system hasn't
gotten in anything in regards the NYE show... i myself attended 3 phish
shows, and couldn't help but notice how much fun i was having, and you know
what? the variety of songs really added to the excitement. you didn't know
what they were gonna play next, where at the next dave show i'm pretty damn
sure that they won't break out into Spotlight... and i bet dave didn't fly
around in a hot dog last night throwing ping pong balls at the crowd... :-)

happy new year, minarets.

Encore
Tripping Billies 1:27:15-1:32:38

Great show. Many highlights : Granny and Lie In Our Graves, of course.
I think the flute solo in Say Goodbye has improved dramatically.
Jimithing had a cool jam & Tripping Billies had the old intro :).
It was my first time hearing Get In Line and I think its a great tune.

Happy New Year To All,
Gray

guava. what teh heck is guava, anyway?

but dammit?!?!? i swear i've never seen
a real guava in my life.
they don't have them at
kroger.

gotten in anything in regards the NYE show... i myself attended 3 phish

what they were gonna play next, where at the next dave show i'm pretty damn
sure that they won't break out into Spotlight... and i bet dave didn't fly
around in a hot dog last night throwing ping pong balls at the crowd... :-)

but i certainly must say that granny and lie in our graves were both
unexpected twists. nice groovin songs. bouncin and shakin, huggin and
singing. fun fun fun.

should i do the one post, duel-show review of the last two night's shows?

hm. ok. i will.
as dear boofy and i decided at nye last night (this chain of events, and
all time sequences could get kinda sketchy, so work with it as best as
you can 'inside my head the noise, chatter chatter chatter...')
ok. (rewind--------------------)
as dear boofy and i decided at nye last night, we would have gladly been
satisfied having paid for our bender tickets if the band had played the
first 5 songs they played on nye, the night-before... it would have made
it all worthwhile. but if we hadn't gone to the bender show, we wouldn't
have been elyte enought to meet the illustrous (and fellow gibran lover)
dave toole, the lolli-pop man, and his group of cronies who we ended up
spending about the next two days with (we almost didn't make it, that
mild three-car incedent out at lake anna was a near clencher, but we
still love you dave, we do. give jamie and josh our hugs....).

oatmeal cookies (minus the raisins, i hate raisins). this arena was huge
(i think a sold out 6,000 seater can accurately be described as so) and
there were many many young people. many. (did i mention that yet?) MANY!
i mean, i'm not 62 or anything, but as an example, i saw a 10yr old there.
point made.
most about this show, i felt as though they had come to the show to
party, rather than to hear the songs. (which gave them an immediate one
check on my shit list) the intro to satellite was nice to hear.
unfortunately (as usual during satellite) i took my bathroom break. while
in there, and the first riffs of satellite began, i was waiting in line
when i heard an eath-shattering shreik!!!!! (hark?) a cry of the song
'satellite' was scre3amed from stall #6, a flush then ensued, and a
screaming arm flailing girl ran from the stall withought having pulled or
buttoned up her jeans. she continuted to scream as her half-naked clad
body ran out the ladies room door tugging on her zipper still screaming
bloody murder for her favorite song was on. that about sums up the bender
scene. but it rocked cause afterward buford and i dug around in the rocks
after the show and we found some peachy-keen stones.. ehe hee....then we
headed out to the lakehouse.

oh boy. the lakehouse.
fun. that's all i have to say. fun fun fun.
from the malleable 'key' incedent, to the
interracial donnuts. i had a blast.

buffalo (yes pholks, buffalo!) new york. wow.
nye rocked. chardy, less, bonaaaaaa, wade.... many friends were there to
bring the new year in with.
gray and i got there before the doors opened, and when we went to go
through security they just let us through thinking we were in the band.
no ticket flashing or anything.
the show was amazing. the first five songs were total euphoria (and i don't
use that term lightly, folks...) dancing nancies was nuts, and jimithing was
about 15 mins long. it was great to talk to shannon worrell for awhile,
she's a really nice person who's very friendly and down to earth. she
hugged me at lest three times and she was totally flabbergasted at people
beign familiar with her music. one of the funniest things was the guy who
accosted gray after the show.
and of course, chicken salad at the diner finished off the perfect end to
the perfect evening.

cabins. and we're chillin by the pool smoking marlboro lights and drinkin
out of coconuts.' but then again, james brown kicks ass.

love to all
and a happy new year...
'god i'd love to turn this little blue world upside down...'
listen to much music, and read _the hunting of the snark_.

Corrections and Hopes

Tagans@aol.com Sun Jan 1 23:51:11 1995

Nothing major, but the show on the 30th was at Bender arena, not Lisner as I
wrote. I was there, I don't know why I wrote the wrong venue.
Some people have said there is absolutely no way to tape the shows with the
Richmond Orchestra. Well, were there's a will, there's a way. My brother
and I have gotten patted down, been through metal detectors, and even had
tapes removed from my body while still getting a DAT into a show where taping
was banned. If anyone has good flat mikes, the place will probably be so
quiet the tape would turn out great. That's how the Birchmere show from this
August was taped. Somehow that show must get out.
York this spring? There are many fans at Cornell, and other than the HORDE,
the band hasn't been anywhere near us in at least a year and a half. Twice
in 10 months shows have been cancelled, once at Cornell and once in
Rochester. Just hoping.

Gray is the man

first of all, i'd like to hail D. Gray Proulx as Mr. Cool of 1995 for posting
not only the list, but the TIMES. for all of us who couldn't make it to the
show, it was cool to see that #36 was over 9 minutes long!

of course, there are 364 more days for someone else to take Gray's place...

;)

show he did with Tim. he went on after Shannon (i assume Worrell), and my

o OSW- Intro
o Satellite
o Recently
o Typical
o Minarets
o Nancies
o Stream [Tim's]
o Pay4

on it. Tim RIPS it up on this tape. the OSW- Intro was not a typo; he
goes right into OSW and ends on the Intro riff. pretty kewl.

12/10/94 (including 2001- Ants), but you'll have to send cash for our CD.
it can surely wait, though. we have plenty!

well, back to Sunday Night SciFi...

Show Crowd

perry@nic.com Mon Jan 2 01:07:15 1995

Happy New Year All,
DBM crowd...I think I was the oldest person (22) at Roseland NY standing by
the stage.I was surronded by a sea of braces and plad....

certain maturity level missing durring the show... The noise levels are
very high...and durring the slower songs the noise levels can be annoying
and somewhat overbearing...

If anyone taped the 30th show it seemed amazing I'd love to get a copy if
you have the time...

Good Luck in your New Year..

some of the shows. However, I don't think that is can be attributed solely
to the younger audience. At the last DMB show I went to, my friends and
I, all around 17, were practically the only one's not jumping into

alright I'm only going to mention this one more time but the Bender crowd
was terrible. does anyone else wish that all the twelve year olds and
asses would stay at home. I wish the good old days of small crowds
was back. Christmas song was terrific but half the crowd was only
there to here UTTAD stuff. The jam wasworth hearing. Also some very
insightful thoughts sprang to mind about electrons valence shells and
fall back again. munch.

I must certainly agree that there is a maturity level missing at
some of the shows. However, I don't think that is can be attributed solely
to the younger audience. At the last DMB show I went to, my friends and I,

yea...but see, its not the point that the younger people are at dmb shows
jumping into each other. it is more the point that, there are many more
younger people at the shows. AND it is also the point that the crowd (as a
whole) is getting irritating---jumping everywhere, etc. if you want to take
it even further, in atlanta, and in birmingham, i did not see too many
younger DRINKING people who weren't acting like assholes. but before i get a
lot of messages saying, "hey , i m 16 and i was ripped, and im not an
asshole", just think about how many ways we can look at this..... i was in
the south both nights..... i was comparing the audiences to audiences like
when i saw dmb in oct of 1993, and so on... there's sometyhing you cannot
really do.

i think they have gotten worse, and i think they have gotten younger, and i
think they have gotten _way_ less respectful, but thats just the way it is...
down.......some people don't.

its just too bad winger isn't touring anymore.

seriously, i know they enjoy themselves when they hop up and down..... what i
hop up and down in the front row, always over 6'5" what is happening to the
youth of america that is causing them all to be taller than me and in the
front row, and giving them the desire to hop up and down!!!!!

whats in the water

serious questions from under the table....

good faces, great colors, suprisingly good quality, fun, and
better than those damned flying windows and rotating "mystify"

see it.

To remind, this was filmed at GA Theater, right?

P.S. GO SEE DAY BY THE RIVER!! Formerly of Miami, now out of
tAthens, I just spent time with their manager (Reis Baron) and am
now listening to their 2-year-old disc, and its great! All those
that think/thought Rusted Root or Solar Circus or Widespread are
the shit should find this disc. I have a business address and
phone for their week-old Athens base if anyone wants the disc or
a booking! Trust me; you won't regreat it!!

New Year's Eve Bash: 36 dancing jimi's lying in our granny's, saying goodbye.

jcdavis@wam.umd.edu Mon Jan 2 16:30:17 1995

God....what a show..
I just have to say that I really really had a wonderful time...One of the
best new year's that I have had in a long time. Full of surprises...seing
friends that I have not seen in a long time....Hearing songs that I have
not heard in a long time...Surprised to not meet anyone on minarets...I
guess I din't look hard enough..sorry I missed you all. Felt very
underdressed..Felt very silly that I didn't know It was semi-formal..I
was really excited to hear two-step...As soon as I saw Boyd place his
fiddle in git-position I screamed out! TWO-STEP!.....noone believed me...

The flute jam in say-goodbye was cosmic...sent me flying...it's my
favorite song...I spent the night screaming for spotlight...I felt bad
later because once when I started screaming for spotlight a girl next to
me heard me and said "yeah! SATTELITE!" and I recoiled in horror and said
"NO!! Not SATTELITE! SPOTLIGHT!" and she just looked at me blankly like,
"no..where at a dave MATTHEWS show.., I don't know where you are.."
and I just sighed and swayed along to the crowd as the opening riff of
satellite sent the girls screaming...

ah well..at least he played lie in our graves...and #36...and a long Jimi
thing.. Thanks for a great evening everyone...
Oh yeah...3rd street IS really good coffee...great omellette.

here we go...

2 step

recently
blue water

jimi thing

(this is where my tape flips...)

nancies
minarets
angel from montgomery
warehouse
so much to say
watchtower
satellite

BEACH song, we've been at the BEACH, this is a BEACH song... helllooooooo'
pretty wacky stuff... he talks about the beach some more, especially, i
believe, durng watchtower.

peter was still in the band at this time, which i guess is pretty obvious
from the setlist.

besides that there is very little to say about it except that recently is
really kickin' and during jimi he introduces everyone (though my tape gets
cut before he can announce the whole band), and each member in turn takes a
solo.

if anyone can help me, uh, send me mail & stuff... :)
a 2 step / lover beginning to a show is probably pretty rare, so that might
help by itself.

i feel like breakin out sumthin new... not that i might not go back to lil'

hee hee i'm so giddy. i'm such a silly girl.

i just wanted to let everyone know about an awesome band.
they're called 'scratchin jones' and they're based out of my old hometown
of dear richmond, va.
they are amazing.... three guys.
one on percussion (drums, but not the carter kind.. bongo drums, KICKASS
drums) and one gentleman on guitar and another on bass guitar. quite
cool. they play some covers (last show i saw them at they played a a
couple phish covers, cavern, and they dedicated 'my sweet one' to me..
awwww.. isnt' that sweet? [clare blushes] and i remember in particular
one awesome widespread cover though the name of the song escapes my
memory at present time.)
regardle3ss, they kick ass... quite intense and amazing... and one of the
memebers (who else but the percussionist/bongo-boy, chardy, himself!!!)
so if you're in richmond on thursday nights, go down to awful arthurs and
check them out.. i'm sure chardy could post some of their other dates if
someone requests so ever so politely and offers him some kind of bribe..
maybe a cigarette... or soem coffee or a kind veggie burrito.

Jumping up and down.....

....is cool if its done respectful.....

Remeber when everyone at Trax would jump up and down to the Two Step
rythm. Kinda like that Phish thing when everyone drops on the floor. Or
boot stamping to ants....well anyway.....
jumping up and down is ok if you know why you're doing it. I jumped up
and down a bit when dave pulled out Help Myself at Bender, and i think
everyone around me thought i was nuts.
I miss being 25 feet away from the stage the maximum distance you could
be, but you cant play the Flood Zone forever.
I dont expect everyone to know every song, and i realize its kinda hard
to keep an entire auditorium of 5000 quite for xmas song, but some in the
crowd, regardless of age or intoxication, seem like they dont come for
the music, nor respect the band.

but then again NYE ROCKED!!!! so it made up for it....

Hey all.
I heard DMB on 99x in Atlanta for the first time early last week. The funny
part about it is the DJ said " we don't know who this band is but they sold
out the Fox so if I get some requests I will play them." For those of you
who don't know about 99x, they play mainly MTVish and early 80's cheese. The
next couple days I heard WWYS four or five times a day.

Just a scarry fact.

Bender Show

morgan_dailey@spacemail.jhuapl.edu Tue Jan 3 15:01:58 1995

I've got to put my little bit in about the Bender show. The crowd surfing has been covered, the young persons topic has been covered, the talking during the slower songs has been covered. Now I've got to add my little beaf about the guy behind me who obviously knew Dave Matthews well because he friggin' screamed the lyrics to every song. He was (I think) a little intoxicated (there was a small bottle of jack daniels at his feet), which is ok by me, but he was singing way loud right behind me. I mouth the word myself (or at worst mumble the lyrics), but this guy was pretty anoying.

Anyway, I found myself closing my eyes so I wouldn't have to get pissed off even more watching all the people crowd surf and sit on each others shoulders. Closing your eyes is a good way to get into the music and absorb it all anyway. (But you don't get to watch Dave dance or Boyd grin when he jams) (Damn I wish I could dance like Dave!)

Also, I wasn't impressed with the acoustics of the venue. But, the days of the Bayou and similar places may be past.

Sorry if this contained some negativity, but I had to vent a little.

the teeny bopper invasion of dmb

chobbs@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Tue Jan 3 15:23:53 1995

im not quite sure that im ready to join the bandwagon and write a
complaint about youngin's at the shows.
although, obnoxious fans are well, obnoxious.
but i was thinkin' instead that its really funny, cool, and scary (all at
once) that DMB might be the next NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK (cause y'all are
definately making it sound like the kids are just as stir crazy) ... now
please dont think im comparing the bands musically (im
not looking for any bickering)
atleast we donthave to worry about improving the lil' ones
taste.. just their ettiquette.
play a little .. never hurts to remember we're all kids

Young Benderians (dec 30)

Dave_P._Anderson@csgi.com Tue Jan 3 15:33:27 1995

About the young crowd that Dave is attracting. It is more of a fad for them.
They don't really love the music, just the fact that it's cool to go to a Dave
concert. Either Dave gets really rich and we live with all the crowd surfing
etc. or the fad dies out, and we support Dave and all his music in peace.
the music. Hopefully (for those of us who miss the small concerts where we
could chat with Dave and not be molested*) the teeny-boppers will dish out
enough cash and move on. The only thing that could keep those kids is if Dave
put out another CD in the next few months, but then again if they start
writing again, who cares about the teeny-boppers!

later,
Dave Anderson

* I tried to visit with Dave before the show (Dec 30) just to say hi, (I met
him on a ferry ride this summer) and two guys, I don't know what they were
security or press, just grabbed me and pointed me towards the stairs. I
wasn't even drunk then! That little incedent really scared me.

anyone out there with a tape of DEC 30? I have 8-28-1994 and10-12-94 for
trade. - about 10-12-94, anyone have a set list?

Re: Anyone Tape the Video?

TerrJS72@aol.com Tue Jan 3 15:35:45 1995

If anyone has the "What would you say" video on tape (esp if
you're in Cville, or Central VA at least), I'd love to borrow and
see it.

To remind, this was filmed at GA Theater, right?

Actually, the video was taped at the Fox Theater in Boulder, CO on Friday 17,1
994. I went to the Thurs. night show and Dave announced that they would be
taping footage for their first video the next afternoon, and for everybody to
show up for the taping. Of course, I could still be wrong, I haven't seen the
video yet, I have this allergic reaction to eMpTyV. So as far as I know, it
was the Fox and not the GA.

show he did with Tim. he went on after Shannon (i assume Worrell), and my

wow what odd luck, as i heard this for the first time out of emily's
collection on the train to boston! hee hee. it's 7/26/93 I believe. Wow,
that's really weirdo that you just asked that now... there is some funny dave
talk on that right before OSW, as you can tell how little dave knows about
music theory, because he's talking to tim and going "this is in Eb or, well,
Cm? there's a C something in there... a C something... and maybe the song is
in Bb" it's hilarious...

I, all around 17, were practically the only one's not jumping into
each other like a bunch of fools. Just goes to show you that some of the
older audience can act immature too...

Oh most definately. most of you probably know by know that i'm 16, and i'd
say i have much more respect for others around me at shows than most of the
college kids do. this isn't to say that there AREN'T 12 year old girls
screaming for 'satellite', but just because you aren't in college doesn't
mean you aren't mature...

The Screen Saver is a series of pictures of the band members
flashed aroudn the screen randomly. The pictures are interesting,
good faces, great colors, suprisingly good quality, fun, and
better than those damned flying windows and rotating "mystify"
line things.

Hmmmmm, I have the screen saver, and i'd say it's pretty much a piece of
crap. It's not like they charged $50 for it, but it was definately below my
expectations... They have one picture of the whole band. Then they flash cut
outs of each band members face. Repeat this. There is the screen saver.

That is all for now. If you've read this whole message, send me mail saying
"I can't believe i read the whooooole thing!!" It will make me feel
appreciated. huh huh.

Re: DMB on the radio

gt0407c@prism.gatech.edu Tue Jan 3 16:11:26 1995

 Trey

Trey,

Do you live in atlanta or were you just here for the show?

BTW, you are right about 99X, it started out pretty cool, playin'
lots of alternative stuff and what not, then, all of a sudden, here
comes resurrection sunday (god, what a terrible show) and hours of
smashing pumpkins, green day, and various other pre-teen idols...
I can only hope (and pray) that 99X and MTV don't turn DAMABA into
just another pop and go...if you know what i mean.

11/17/92?

I don't know how I feel about all these reported teenagers at the show
over the weekend. On the one hand, it saddens me that Dave is such a
faddy type thing now and I hope it doesn't hurt the band by driving away
people who really dig him. On the other hand, some teenagers have pretty
advanced musical tastes. My sis is 17 and a senior in high school and
is really into Phish and the Dead and DMB. Of course, she is able to
appreciate the music and not the coolness of listening to them.
Hopefully it will all fade away.

The new disc, BTW, is on sale at MusicLand for $10.99.

teeny bobers

pdquinn@nyx.cs.du.edu Tue Jan 3 19:35:51 1995

The under twenty-one crowd is getting a very bad rap.

Don't blame us for the behavior of those, young and old, who have heard a
song from UTTAD and decide to use a DMB concert as an excuse to get
drunk. Dave has a very large and loyal following among minors who go to
see a DMB concert for the music. It is stupid and dangerous to
stereotype an entire generation. I have been to several dave concerts
and seen people acting like morons who are well into twenties and
thirities.

Anyway, on the concert front I here the Big Head Todd and Dave Matthews
are planning on playing three dates at Reds Rocks Amp., thats about 27,000
tickets. Red Rocks is one of the greatest places in the nation to see
a concert. However, this is very unconfirmed.

Speaking of rumors, I heard from a relitive in Virginia the idea for "Say
Goodbye" came from incident that occured between Dave and Peter, which
resulted in Peter leaving the band. Sounds very fictional, can anyone
confirm.......

where are you? I would love to hear about the shows you saw over NYE. I
am still pissed about not seeing them, my friends are probably pissed off too
that I couldn't go. Sorry Pad and Jeff. It sounds like the two shows on
the 30th and 31st were amazing. I just felt that it was necessary to
spend some time with my mother. Hey emily, I'm not leaving for the
semester at sea until the 25th, and my buddy and I are thinkin' about
making a few road trips, nothing special though, and we might be swingin'
by Maine. Is that anywhere near you Well it doesn't matter, I'd swing

NYE escapades. Mine was quite memorable.

I admit I tried, but didn't like it

USXE28B@prodigy.com Tue Jan 3 21:20:45 1995

At the Charlotte show, I allowed one of my friends talk me
into trying crowd surfing. I cannot see how people can
enjoy his music with their ass being grabbed and being hit
in the balls. Do you agree? I got dropped and my ass still
hurts. Thats what I get for giving into pier (Spelling)
pressure. I also admit I was a bit intoxicated, but not
sloppy. The extent of my jumping was at the begining of
song #36. I wasn't 3 feet off the air which youall make it
sound like some did. As for the tobacco incident, it was a
misunderstanding, and if I saw Dave I would appologise. Do
youall think you can forgive my mistakes.
Finally Does anybody have the Raleigh boot with widespread
where Boyd jams with them. I would also like their set if
possible.
Thanks

although i have been observing through the net for a few months now, this
is the first
time i have been prompted to write. i am relatively new to dmb (10 shows in
two years),but i have been to nearly 100 concerts in the past 15 years. I
can honestly say
the nye crowd was the rudest and most obnoxious crowd of recent memory
(which is fairly limited) i am 29 years old,so i would love to blame it
on the youngsters, but i had run-ins with assholes of all ages. i believe
70% of the crowd was there to party with dave being just a background
band.....i too did not know this was a semi-formal event but i do
know that when i go see a remarkable band such as dmb,, i like to dress
casually, i
already get the undistinguished honor of wearing a suit and tie monday thru
friday....
it just goes to show that the more people try to act like they have class,
the less they
actually display.....

my location has not been accessible for the past few days, soo here's a late
assessment of bender aaand nye.

i had a dream that i was one of the lolli-pop clan with a lolli-pop
eating disorder. clare-the good witch what'shername,
boofy-the scarecrow, and i were on a joyous journey to reach the emerald
marriot. along the way we encountered the evil key witch with her body
surfing monkey things. the evil witch hurled twelve year old girls at
us. :( but we used our magic safety pops to fend them off with smiles. :)
upon reaching the emerald marriot, we stood before david matthews-the
wizard of ahhhhhs. .........:)
he rewarded our long journey with a rare and precious setlist and told us
that all we needed to get home was ...........

just then i was awoken by the annoying twitches and shakes of a sugar
overdose. i looked around and saw lolli-pop sticks and wrappers all around.
and there to my surprise was a copy of 'the prophet' by kahlil gibran
(read it) so i read into the night and pondered if i'd ever be lucky
enough to return to that wonderful place.

thanks clare and boofy for the dream inspiration
hugs to you all

Hey all,
I just erased all 277 messages since Dec. 15, so I don't know if this was
mentioned, but UTTAD was listed as part of a small (less than 10 or so)
group of the top releases of 1994 in the Wall Street Journal. My Dad cut
it out for me (cool Dad). Anyway, I have no idea what I did with it, but if I
find it, I'll let you all know what was said. I don't remember all the
other bands listed, but I know Counting Crows was on there and so was
Smashing Pumpkins. Hey, it was sometime areound the 17th... so long

Happy Freaking New Year!!!1

WIFOY@DAVIDSON.EDU Wed Jan 4 06:02:35 1995

one less year before the end of the millenium, which evidently some
people think is the end of the world....

McLean grooving to everything. They dusted off some old stuff and
played one INCREDIBLY long set with much visual effects, which you
folks who see em at Bayou are spoiled by...
them some on Soulfish and SLWB. Anyone wondering where Alex was, he
a setlist, but...

everyday syndrome
essence of the problem with cool intro
i don't care
south of the border
don't ask me why
cheri
soulfish [ which they stopped at midnight and picked up later]
smile
spent
acid in your eyes
falling
time will heal me
henry hill
slwb
who do you love
and probably a bunch of stuff I can't remember

ed mccain played for about 45-55 minutes and had a lot of really
wicked jams.

I did bring my taping stuff, but didn't have the right jacks, as
Ryan's DAT was being repaired, so he's spinning me copies of both
bands, and ya'll will know when I'm getting them.. I was the only
taper there, so I'll be in touch.

All you people who live in DC, I love the place. I stayed a couple of
extra days, and it's a really cool city. Anyone who will work in mass
transit, look at DC's Metro. It rocks! [ if only it ran all night, I
wouldn't have had to drive out to the show]

DMB content :

Charlotte did in fact rock!! Nice minarets jam[ Dave heard it in the
parking lot that afternoon and walked over incognito and hung out and
said something about it in the show.] really good stuff. Hello to all
those "People by the Board." You know that's a good movie title.
classic tale of youth horror in which the main character gets attacked
by a crazed sound manager. I got to meet the immortal Bagby! I was
stoked. Anyway, sorry to post for so long, but I don't get access that
much.

ahead and send whatever you've got. I check my PO Box while I'm gone

well, NYE, from a northerner's pt of view

vastolj@alleg.EDU Wed Jan 4 11:32:26 1995

Hey, hey, hey,
able to get 'ahold of a computer till now, so, i'd like to throw a few
comments your way...
both. I
hope to run into you two many more times to come...why don't you guys visit
this summer in Jackson Hole, WY? ski in june, ride a horse, swim in a spring
fed lake...i'll stop.

marriot, all the while the silver sparrow stalled just as we pulled in...how
timely. i don't know

if anyone stayed in the marriot that night but if they did....elevators that
go up but
don't go down? Didn't the wine taste like a wine cooler, and two different
color tickets????! gee, there were many times i went up throwing a blue
ticket in the bar tenders face when i was told i needed a RED
ticket....arrrrgggh!

show i saw was in Lousiana and it was good, no it was great, but sort of
mellow, this show was intense...and fantastic...didn't you guys think NYE
came and went, i mean the 10, 9, 8...deal? I thought it was stll 11pm...like
Dave was pulling my leg..nope.

them in one of their home towns playing...and surprisingly, IMHO, the crowd
was pretty good. from what clare was saying about bender, i was a bit
hesitant. i floated around a bit during the concert, the back the middle,
sort of the front, and no one
was yelling ants, satelite, their were no 10 year olds, etc....one thing i
found very, very funny were the over-protective boyfriends...ha, ha...they
all seemed to have a little string around their girlfriends, like they were
their bodyguards, not their friends...i think some of them missed out on the
concert just to keep a close watch on their dates...ha, ha...sorry, i just
had to mention it, it was a sight to see....well, enough of my endless
babble, i should have put a clause in my subject like, delete this blah,
blah, to save your time...i'll stop.

on my way,
joe

Boyd with Allgood

morgan_dailey@spacemail.jhuapl.edu Wed Jan 4 14:19:38 1995

Hey people,
Some person asked about Boyd jamming
with Widespread. Is this true? I'd like to hear that.

This reminded me of a question I've been wanting to ask.

Any info appreciated,

Re: Jumping up and down.....

KOLIVER1@UA1VM.UA.EDU Wed Jan 4 14:31:58 1995

hi im back at school...ooo i got to stand outside in tennessee when it was
15 degrees and smoke cigaretts in my boxers....i miss new mexico ---way too
hot here (but its cool now) oh---i mean cool cool not just cool, yanno?

jumping up and down is ok if you know why you're doing it. I jumped up
...much less, why..
to keep an entire auditorium of 5000 quite for xmas song, but some in the
crowd, regardless of age or intoxication, seem like they dont come for
the music, nor respect the band.
it is the lack of respect that seems to go hand in hand with youngness and
age....people were moshing to lover lay down, chris. and someone did a stage
dive off the balcony.....i guess that would make it a balcony dive...(low
balconies in birmingham---) during #36.....screaming and screaming and screamin
ggggg ----) that looks lika a cyclops.
and the flourescent light at work last night looked like a footlong hot dog..

and, people (a couple, anyway) had passed out, and slept through halloween
im not saying intoxication is bad, but it's the teenyboppers who cant hold
a shot of tequila, who are the most obnoxious at these shows....

Its turnig into a huge frat party insteda of a huge following....

anyway... does a live tape of scratchin jones exist??

I agree with you. I just think that we have to be careful and not
automatically discount a fan because s/he is a little younger than us.
(And honestly, teenagers aren't that much younger than some of us who can
count on one hand the number of years it has been since we left teen

Re: Anyone Tape the Video?

Boulder in Colorado who was at the taping for the video WWYS....he said
that they had cameras set up at around seven or eight in the afternoon,
then they let all of the people in for that night's show, then they
filmed for about an hour, then stopped, then they played without all
those lights for the rest of the jam.....maybe it was filmed at the GA
theater also, but, if i'm not mistaken, i believe that it was filmed in
Boulder.......just my two cents worth....i'm not trying to pick any
fights or anything like that! Adios......................mcl.

If anyone has the "What would you say" video on tape (esp if
you're in Cville, or Central VA at least), I'd love to borrow and
 see it.

To remind, this was filmed at GA Theater, right?

I don't think that anyone is trying to put down young people in general, but
young obnoxious people!! And unfortunately the majority of the obnoxious
people at Bender weren't even old enough to drive. Anyone else see all
of the fourteen-year-old couples making out on the floor?? How many
twenty-three year-olds did you see doing the same thing? I don't think
anyone cares if young people go to the shows as long as they have
enough respect for the band to at least listen to them while they are
there!!

As I said, I agree that these teenagers who act like this are ruining
things for the rest of us wholeheartedly. It's just that I've seen this
kind of thing before and it usually goes from targeting obnoxious teens
to all teens. The original postings about this problem seemed to kind of
target all teens with the generalization that all of the kiddies there
caused a problem. It is unfortunate for those kids who were there and
who were enjoying the show in a civilized manner that they are sort of
being lumped in with the cretinous youths who were there, too. I
apologize for misreading the things people said. I guess part of it is
just the overprotective big sis in me making sure people like my sis, who
is a genuine fan, don't get a bad rap.

Peace,
Mel

The "Teeny Bobbers" Thing

lb065@nptn.org Wed Jan 4 17:05:17 1995

Hi all (my first post). Well, I read that one letter about young
fans the other day and decided to throw in my two cents. Well,
I am a 16 year old from Cleveland, Ohio. I am a big music fan and
collector and talk to a lot of other people often about it. Well,
I can safely say that only one of the many people I know have
even heard of Dave Matthews Band. Why? Well, we have two "modern
rock" stations in town but I have never heard DMB on either at
any time, and I listen a lot. (hmm...maybe I should request them
some day and see what they do...) Well, anyways, I luckily got
hooked on them when I heard 'Jimi Thing' on the CD with the Dec.
issue of CMJ. Heard the song, loved it, and had to get the tape,
which I also liked and got the same day as Rusted Root which I
heard on the previous month's disc. I know that us teens listen
to the radio a lot but I can't see a big fan base growing when
they are getting NO airplay at all (at least not in northeast
ohio). This is a good thing to, because I can't name how many
bands I have lost this way (and I don't care to get into a
selling out rant now). but, bands just lose that special
something when a lot of people like them. I for one, like music
for the music and not just because others like them and it's the
"cool thing" to like this band and that. It is cool to share a
good group like DMB or RR with a friend but once everyone starts
liking them, it's different. Well, look at roll on. Probably
bored most of you to death but I just had to get this off my
chest. So, to sum it all up, I don't see DMB as being a band
that is going to get all the teeny bobbers and be the "cool
thing" to listen to, so don't worry. Later.

young ones

EDOHERTY@MACALSTR.EDU Wed Jan 4 17:30:08 1995

I'll throw my 2 cents into this debate. A changing crowd will be a never
ending "situation" ("problem" if you so desire) as long as DMB plays and puts
out albums. No matter how much we wish it was not true, bands want to sell
albums and make a good or excellent living off what they love...playing
music. I am sure that Dave et al. would love to see UTAD be a number 1 hit and
sell millions of copies. We are already seeing an influx of "new" people into
the scene so they will have to play larger venues and it will only get bigger.

The problem is that we always want "the good old days" to continue, but they
never do. I know people who in 1971 throught the scene at Grateful Dead
concerts was becoming too much so they stopped going to shows. These people
moaned about the newbies coming into the scene and the Dead having to play
larger halls. The old timers also thought the new fans did not "understand"
the music like they did when they started seeing the Dead in 1968 or 1969.
Today the Dead play to 55,000 people in large stadiums. My point is that all
you need to do is look at other bands as an example of what might/will happen
with the Dave Matthews Band. For those who were into the scene from the start
it might appear to be going down the drain, or you can see it as yet another
stage in their development.

For the Dave Matthews Band to make it in this business they have to sell
albums. That is what they want (otherwise they wouldn't do it). If the albums
do well things will change. I hate seeing 12 year olds at shows, but there
isn't much you can do. What do you think Nirvana felt about their sucess? The
only solution is to stay out of the music industry (i.e., don't make albums),
but that is a hard thing to wish upon a band. The DMB and all of us are going
to have to roll with the punches.

Peace! Eric Doherty "edoherty@macalstr.edu"

The purpose of the camera was for a video feed for the large screen
downstairs in the other ballroom. I don't know if a tape was actually
made or not. It wouldn't be too exciting a video since the camera was
stationary for the whole show.

age survey

grayp@pinn.net Wed Jan 4 17:46:40 1995

With all the talk good and bad about the age of fans in the last week or
so, I'm kind of interested in the average age of our fellow minarets
subscribers.

My question for you is : How old are you?

To hopefully boost the response, I'll make a copy of either set of the
New Years Eve show for every 10th response. Please no grovels right now
beyond that.

You age will not be broadcast over the net nor to anyone other than me
unless you decide to respond to the net other than me personally.

Send responses to : grayp@pinn.net

Thanks,
I'll post the results in about a week or as soon as I get all the responses.

Gray.

Re: age survey

allgood@umich.edu Wed Jan 4 18:41:21 1995

Hey, this goes out to everyone, as of late, particularly newcomers, who
have resurfaced an old issue--- THERE HAS BEEN ENOUGH TALK ABOUT THE
AGE AND SELFISHNESS OF THOSE THAT ENJOY THE DAVE MATTHEWS BAND.
This subject has been thouroughly digested, scrambled, discussed,
torn apart and put back together many months ago on the net. I hate to
be the one to be the bringer of bad news, but if you want to talk about
the above mentioned mommbo jumbo, try to make it direct to a person in
order to avoid cluttering up bandwith for those that like to discuss
pertinent information regarding the band(i.e. setlists, new info, dates,
and other stuff regarding dave and the band.) That is what the founders of
this net had in mind. There is no need for subjects that might cause
bickering.

P.S. You will notice that I expressed no opinion regarding the age of the
fans.	And, I only felt the need to say this (you may see that I feel a
little bit too informative) because you all make me laugh when you talk
of trivial matters. Emily, where are you?

denied. I would greatly appreciated being removed from this list.. Thank

how difficult is that?
maybe your hostility has caused people to not give a damn as to the path
you and your computer email address take.

a simple request for the unsubscribe instructions is all you haveever had
to do. no one on this net has the power to unsubscribe ordelete you from

if you had kindly requested instructions with a smile you would have
