more colorado thoughts

jjthomps@teton.Mines.Colorado.EDU Wed Nov 23 16:54:10 1994

Okay, I'm back.

Don't have the time to write up all my thoughts on the band, the audience,
the weather, etc. So short and sweet - deja vu. I mean they were great
each time - but nary a surprise in the whole week. I did ask Jeff after
their last show in Vail on Sun. about some names of the two new songs I did
hear (one at the all ages show and one at the video shoot) and he said they
didn't have names yet. He said they were working on new tunes because they
were getting a little sick of playing the same songs (thank god). I was
hoping they would bring some old ones back and dust them off - but they
played it safe and stuck with very standard sets.

Granny (0/4)
Billies (4/4)
Dancing Nancies - Warehouse (4/4) (including the last two shows in CO 6/6)

WWYS, Videos... 'you say that things change'

NebuIous@aol.com Wed Nov 23 20:59:25 1994

I know I've been posting a lot lately, but I personally would rather see more
posts concerning... uh... like the band and stuff than wasteful flames by two
attention hungry party spoilers...

Anyway, I was walking on... lessee... 13th street today and I had this vivid
memory of how much I used to love What Would You Say. Boy it seems like so
long ago. I mean, it used to really, really rock. The song itself is great,
but the big huge jam thing at the end would always be evolving and would
always be cool.

I miss that.

And now with a video coming, though it somehow confuses me why they (or
whoever) picked WWYS (especially if they have secrets hopes of being MTV Buzz
Bin material), we all KNOW the song is just going to get streamlined even
more.

They could at least bring back Granny to ease my pain... and chuck a
Spotlight in there for good measure.

No DMB NYE For Ben. But everyone out there have a kick ass time for me
anyway.

Love and Turkey,

Ben

God Street Wine live online conference

ABCDan@aol.com Wed Nov 23 21:51:33 1994

Members of God Street Wine will appear as our guests in the ABC Auditorium
(on America Online) for the live conference series "Fridays@4ET" on Friday,
Nov. 25th, the day after Thanksgiving. It will take place before their
concert at the Capitol Theater in Port Chest, NY.

To participate in the conference, log into an America Online account and use
the keyword ABC. Then click on AUDITORIUM in the lower right. Then select
"Enter the Auditorium/Odeon" and you'll be there. It's at 4:00 eastern on the
25th (Friday).

However, there will probably be a "hot button" on the welcome menu that will
take you right to the GSW event. It'll say something like "Click here for
the GSW conference."

If you can't make the conference as it's happening, be sure to check out the
transcript, which will be available on the net soon afterwards.

Hope to see you there!

Kermit the Frog here

Dave_P._Anderson@csgi.com Thu Nov 24 00:15:54 1994

Kermit the Frog here, wondering whether or not I should undigest or not. I
really don't want to miss out on any late breaking news, but will I be able to
handle the huge amounts of mail?

My hands sweat each day as I stare at my e-mail account waiting, drool
dripping on my now sodden keyboard, for the mext instalment of MINARETS digest
X.

Well, as you can see I'm in one of those moods. Well I thought I'd add one of
some personal stuff so that you know who you are dealing with. I'm a high
schooler, I know you are all gasping from shock but wait! I've liked Dave for
about a year ever since my sister made me listen to his disk. He's sorta been
an idol guitar wise, my pinky has been getting a lot of exercise in the last
few months, still can't get jimi thing just right.

Well, I can't wait to see Dave at Bender but that is in about a month arg.
Well it you are feeling like you want to nurture a young Matthews lover, just
e-mail me your address and I will send a blank tape to ya. (If a lot of
people nurture me i'll have lots of tapes to trade, yay!)

Later,
Dave the Daver

PS lover, if you are reading this, lay down for me.

Dave @ Zollman's

dominic@raptor.sccs.swarthmore.edu Fri Nov 25 00:31:16 1994

i'm listening to the Zollman's Pavillion performance, 10/30/93, and i came
upon this song, labelled, "Jam" right before going into it, there are

"and so we walk, very casually, from our birth to our death. and do our
best, while we're there, to separate ourselves from each other."

Walking by the river
Reach my hands to cup the sky
Down by my arms
Bitter blue turns to red as gashes grew

The river takes you

So much more than I will ever be.

Take this my arm
Take this my eyes
Take this my mouth, and
All this [says]is to [b]me completely true.

[Leroi solo]

Walking by...

[Boyd rips out a SCAREY solo-- Halloweenish, reminiscent of _Psycho_, really]

[Fee-like beat, Leroi is back]

[almost a fade out ending]

if no other name surfaces, i'm calling it "Cup the Sky", cause that's a
great image.

BTW, does anyone know if it's Peter Griesar on keyboard for this show?

thanks,

Once again....

Your tape is mislabelled. 1-30-93. Zollman's. Song is, um, Blue Water, or
Blue Water Babboon Farm, depending.
Actually, maybe it's 10/31. Same place, but I don't have this tape, so I
don't know if it was played. I'd guess not. Go with the first one.

"You've got you

And we're two men together,
Maybe we'll be mischievous
And forget about your man
Forget about my wife

Oh lay here with me..."

10.25.94 Roseland Theatre

suzi@teleport.com Sat Nov 26 13:49:04 1994

Hey all!
After lurking for a couple months and finally seeing DMB last night for
the first time, I decided to try my hand at my first post to this
digest. Nothing could have prepared me for this show. I've been
listening to the CDs, collecting tapes, seeking out info on this
band...and now I am left speachless. I am only so sad that i have to
work tonight, or else I would venture up to Seattle for the show!
They opened with a smooth Seek up. I was thrilled to see Boyd play, he
seems so happy and inspired! Too bad i didn't take down a setlist, I was
too disorganized, but I know for sure they played Dancing Nancies, Jimi
Thing, Recently (smokin!!), minarets, song that jane likes, and more that
escapes me now. Oh except for the set closer of Ants marching which was
of course the first song that really made DMB an addiction of mine.
Anyway, I will stop babbling now. I am psyched that they made it out to
the NW, finally, and lets hope they return soon. It was nice to see a
lot of folks on tour, there were some clear out-of-towners up front.
Hope Portland treated you well despite the RAIN :)

MTV, DOS, and 10/10/93

To all net-people,

item on the Dave Matthews Band. They presented them well, I think,
but I thought it was a little odd to see them on MTV. I mean it would be
great if the exposure could bring them around to places that they
normally wouldn't go, like South Florida(I'm so selfish), but didn't
MTV/Radio pick up the Spin Doctors and run with them too? Not that there
is any comparison, mind you. Just a thought...

and does anyone have the set list from 10/10/93? I have some filler
on my tapes which makes labelling confusing.

ROOT

hey all,
Rusted Root's "When I Woke" and I'm convinced. They are definitely one hell of
a groovin' bunch of pittsburg-ains! (pittsburg-ers?) I just want to know if
anyone out there has heard their first cd which they advertise inside the new
disc. Is it worth picking up? I'd also love to get a hold of some live stuff
especially one of the shows where they jammed with Dave on minarets. If anyone
can help me out I'd love to set up a trade. e-mail me and I'll send you a copy
of my tapelist.

ps= has anyone on the net ever heard of a group called Moxy Fruvous? If you
dig They Might Be Giants and the Barenaked Ladies, see if you can get your
hands on their album "Bargainville." They're a semi-a capella group from
toronto and I think you can only get the disc up north in canada. If there's
anyone on the net who lives north of the border, let me know 'cause I'd like to
get a copy of the cd instead of the fuzzy copy of a copy of a copy that I have
now.

unsolved SOMUCHTOSAY mystery

jgfelt@mail.wm.edu Mon Nov 28 01:34:52 1994

Once upon a time, there was a show here at William and Mary (April
10th, 1994 to be exact) with DMB headlining. The set was cut
short because of a Williamsburg ordinance stating that outdoor
performances must end by 8pm or some shit like that. The short set
was nice (OSW, TwoStep, BoWA, WWYS, Recently w/ Doug Wannamaker, and
maybe one or two more... my master copy is loaned out, and i forget)
Anyway, a friend of mine was talking to LeRoi on the bus before
the show when Dave said something like "I'm thinking about playing
'So Much to Say' tonight". This was later verified by an
acquaintance who said that SMTS was ON the set list. Obviously, the
that they would like to trade? i am seeking a super-HQ non-Peter
version of the song for comparison and eventual translation into
guitar tablature for the file.

in reference to the person who posted about basing the net.shirt on
typical situation, i'd like to go public with my support of the ants
shirt, even if i am sick of the song. i like the ants idea because
it's a general thing, and that's what we need on the t-shirt. i'm
a big one for symbolism, but i also don't feel like explaining my t-shirt
to every dave-come-lately who asks, and with the ants shirt, i think if
it happens i can say "it's an ants marching thing...you obviously don't
understand." i think with a typical situation reference, i'd feel obliged
to make some sort of explanation, because i'm sure their are actually
people who don't know the lyrics to typical. not a problem for ants,
not to mention that a bunch of ants automaticallty harks to the title
of the song, making it easy for people to figure out.

actually, i do like ants marching. i'm just a bit sick of hearing it

Tape Covers

WIFOY@DAVIDSON.EDU Mon Nov 28 10:32:12 1994

tape covers. I made a stencil for Tape covers on my WordPerfect quite
easily, but it's mac so sorry WinDos folks. There is a nice option as
well at the archive.umich.edu ftp site there is a tape-labeller
program [ shareware and worth it!]. He's planned a really nice
upgrade, so let's support this guy! I think the program is called
"Tape Labeller 4.0" and is probably binhex'd and stuffit'd. Hope that
helps.

MINARETS ARE PUSSIES

EIQ9DXB@MVS.OAC.UCLA.EDU Mon Nov 28 11:21:40 1994

Hi, everybody.

I've tried UNSUBSCRIBING from this mailing list about ten times now, USING
THE METHOD DESCRIBED IN THE INTRO POST plus several inspired variations of
it. I've tried emailing "J Crothers" several times for assistance and I'm still
receiving mail from this list.

CAN ANYONE GET ME REMOVED FROM THIS LIST OR EXPLAIN WHY I'M TRAPPED ON IT?

I sent a message to J Crothers threatening to post a slew of annoying and
obnoxious messages to this list if I'm not removed from it. In a day or two,
I'll follow thru on this threat...

NOTHING AGAINST DMB OR COOL DMB FANS. I just can't handle the traffic of
mail and I find most of the posts to be personal mail between friends and
ridiculously idiosyncratic, highly elitist crap.

Please get me off this list. This is your last warning.

what is a bagby?

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Mon Nov 28 11:58:38 1994

i figure this is going to become a fairly common question as the term
becomes more established and more lurkers start joining us, so i decided
to write this little explanation for the faq. i didn't create the term,
and i've only just lately come into using it, so i'm by no means an
expert on making this definition, so if you feel you want to add anything,
go right ahead. if you want to contradict anything, go right ahead, but
in my outspoken pagan devil worshiping kind of way, this is my take on

what is a bagby?

a bagby is the term used to refer to any and all copies of taped dave
people trying to avoid the contraband stigma of the word "bootleg,"
though i'm not really sure who created it. kind of funny, actually,
because i think every band that's ever legally allowed tape trading
has had fans try and come up with a good alternative to the word "bootleg"
and to the best of my knowledge, we're the first ones to actually
accomplish (such a petty) goal;).

the term "bagby" is comes from the name of the band's soundman, jeff
bagby.

**personal opinions of rick's***

bagby's are a dave matthew's band thing, and a damaba thing _only_.
if you talk "bagby" while referring to phish or dead tape trading, you
are speaking in tongues. (though i suppose when you are phish tape
trading, you could say "hey man, you got any good languedoc's?" :)

when referring to multiple bagby's, don't change the spelling to bagbies.
1)it looks funny.
2)the name is obviously our way of paying homage to damaba's soundman,

be sure to share bagby's and be generous in spreading them around. hopefully,
soon i can find access to solid taping equipment and make some newbie offers,
but for now, i'm stuck with two different dual cassette decks, and out of four
decks, only one works, and not well. really sux, to say the least.

any comments, additions? contradictions? contraceptives?

thought for the day (and completely irrelevant to most listservs and
newsgroups save for maybe alt.rick.is.really.stupid.):

imagine you are a non-english speaking person trying to learn english
and its slang.

condominium
contraceptive
contraband (as in iran-contra figures)

contra

Re: what is a bagby?

axvann@minerva.cis.yale.edu Mon Nov 28 12:49:19 1994

The term came from someone who posts often- CHA, perhaps? after I
requested a different name than bootlegs.
How old is Jeff? He's been with Dave for a while, and he can't be much
more than college age. Some sort of boy genius of audio, perhaps?
The contra in "Iran contra" refers to Nicaraguan freedom fighters, not
contraband, which is a general term for illegal goods. Sorry Rick.
Please don't send me offers to trade for Get in Line anymore, I have
enough offers now. I keep forgetting how great this net is trade- wise.

Re: different review (long response)

btanen@netspace.students.brown.edu Mon Nov 28 13:43:45 1994

very negative review of Remember Two Things that was passed along by Reid
Spice. The review (which can be found in minarets-history-1) sparked off
the first-ever flame war on Minarets.

Minarets History Issue 3:

--Ben

P.S.: You know, reading this whole thing again reminds me that although
yes, the internet in general and minarets in particular are great, there
is a capacity to both overemphasize one's emotions (in order to convey
them in writing) and a capacity to be oversensitive, and thus pissed
off. What else could account for our misunderstanding of sarcasm and the
success of flame-bait? Anyway, enjoy.

---------------------

Thank God!

all the bullshit on Phish.Net lately and having every
little criticism you make get you into a total flame
war; it just plain sucks
honest and forwarding the criticism (even though it
*was* a bit harsh) but at least it was honest. And,
overall, I suppose that's better.
(I'll get it tonight at Northhampton! yeaaaa!) and will
listen to it with an open mind but we all like and
don't like albums. And sometimes an album grows os us.
alot and really dig some aspects of it. It all depends.

with any of the points. Please don't scream and yell and get offended --
 it's just another viewpoint.

[ lots of stuff from 'another viewpoint' ]

Okay, so rather scathing comments to Stephan and Leroi but... intelligent
 comments? feedback? alternative thoughts?

being offended and write a scathing response. However,
that IS the philosophy of the HORDE music scene I
believe, to accept everyone's views, no matter how
foreign they may seem, so I will refrain from going
line- by-line and responding with my own comments.
true HORDEr. It's evident from both his actions and
thoughts. Nothing wrong with that, but it's like me
trying to review the latest album from Barney.
of opinions.. I happen to love the album, and Tripping
Billies is one of my favorite songs, and I love Leroi's
playing, etc. I just feel his opinion is less credible
than many of those here because he's the type to send
someone else to do his work while he plays pool, just
because it's cold and he doesn't want to wait until the
next day to get the album, and has something against an
independently distributed album, etc. That's just not
the mindset of most of the people here I believe.
One man's OPINION.......

I passed on (from a *friend* of mine, please remember
that!) I still haven't heard it yet so I don't know...
personally and told me what you thought. I didn't post
a negative review to upset people, I was more hoping
that people would take his comments seriously and see
if there was any value to them at all. Yes, I agree
that Stephan is solid and Leroi is much better than my
friend gives him credit. But I was hoping more that
people would maybe think about whether or not Dave does
try to enunciate more clearly on the album, if the
album does sound flat (as though the energy was lost in
the recording), things like that. You folks have heard
lots of live tapes, you've heard lots of shows, how
does the album compare? A good live album or has it
been tamed down at all? Anyway, enough for now.

said, "He's good, but he ain't that good..." So we went back to the house and

It was great...
reference to uva greek, i totally dismissed this
article as not worth my time. but i read on. then i
found myself so disgusted with this perrsons point of
view that i had to reply.
uva greek, based almost solely on my observance of
their behaviour at dave matthews shows. as was
discussed at the inception of this net, dave matthews
has been getting discouraged with playing at TRAX.
this is because the audience gets drunk, throws each
other around, generally ignores what dave is trying to
do, and doesn't pay the slightest bit of attention
unless ants, halloween, or warehouse is being played.
i can only assume that your freind is among this crowd,
based on his reference to warehouse and halloween (FYI,
'dead and gone' would be known to most of us as 'rhyme
or reason'), as well as his opinion of dave matthews in
general.
that thinks that boyd is the heart and soul of this
band. i don't think that i could imagine this band
without his almost hillbilly addition to the band, but
it's called 'the dave matthews band' for a reason.
read that i can't even organize my thoughts on the
subject. your freind apparently doesn't know jack shit
about the music industry, and the hassles of signing
contracts and such, and should be clued into the fact
that a major label deal is in the works that should
produce us a full studio disc next year.
stop now. in all actuality, i appreciate the different
point of view, and i apologize up front to spice for
pretty much saying his freind has no character or
merit, IMNSHO. but still, dave is far from doomed.
this is not dave's definitive work, nor is he making it
out to be. 'remember two things' is a debut album.
it's an introduction for the some 40 states left that
have never heard of the man. treat it as such. and
tell your freind that he lives in c-ville, and is more
than welcome to go to TRAX each and every tue night
until he hears his beloved halloween song or spotlight.
phish putting harry hood on a cd. anyone agree?

opinions...I have seen you write things to this net
that I enjoyed. Your "friend's" I did not, and would
rather address him personally...but I don't know who he
is...see?
However, it is a friend of mine who goes to UVa and someone
who has been listening to Dave for well over a year and going to shows and
all that.
music go to Dave shows every week.
Well, Dave Matthews' album finally came out. He's doomed. It's fair at best.
us your story ye who knows so much...
He did, however, have a substantial following waiting at midnight for its
release. Marcus and I went dwon to Plan 9 around 12:30 or so and the line was
out the door, around the building, and down the block. Very long wait. We
said, "He's good, but he ain't that good..."
have made comments this pathetic...
So we went back to the house and sent some pledges to get it for us. They
didn't get back until about 3:30. Stood outside and froze their nuts off while
we enjoyed some fine billiards. It was great...

pledges who stood in the cold for you are you and your
friend who let it go to your heads when your silly
Greek system allows you to demean other individuals
just to get your rocks off.
Anyway, someone obviously told him that no one could understand what the fuck
he was saying because he sounds like he's trying so hard to enunciate. So
that sucks. He's not a very good singer to begin with
disgusting...shut up...
and when you can understand what he's saying, it's even worse.
lyrical talent. This statement is among your most
ignorant. Yet you try to pass it off as weathered
experience. *sarcasm begins* Thank god someone like
you is around to tell us al l what to think about the
Dave Matthews Band. Without someone like you who has
seen them SO MANY times us folks would have no one to
look to. Thank you. *sarcasm ends with bout of
vomiting*
Also, although most of the album is live (from a show I saw, anyway, as a a
matter of fact), they knew they were being taped and took a little off it to
make sure they played the right notes and stuff. So it's kind of a flat
 performance.

don't have quite as much live Dave experience wouldn't
have realized this without your insightful
comments...thank you again...moron...
 Also too, they
left out some of the better songs to put in shit like 'Tripping Billies', a
song we all know and hate. No 'Halloween', no 'Dead and Gone'
no 'Spotlight'. I don't think 'Warehouse' is on it, either. Oh yeah,
it ain't on no Columbia, either.

to the hood dork...is a major label really the means by
which you judge a band...oops...forgot you are really
really dumb! Of course that's your criteria!
Some basement label like "Rag Bone Records" or "Bona
Rag" or something.
I'll tape it for you, though, and fill the rest of the tape with decent stuff
he's played. Who knows, maybe people who haven't heard good live shows will
like it. Maybe he'll make some money and hire a real sax player and bassist.
Or just get Greg Howard to cover both of their parts. I'm sure he could do a
better job by himself than both Leroi and Stephan...
enough. Leroi and Stephan are both far more vast
musical talents than you or you drunk frat brothers
give them credit for. Maybe not as catchy as Boyd (who
is also great) but both Leroi and Stephan are INTEGRAL
parts of the band. I won't even bother trying to
convince you.
Tuesday nights. Just because UVA sees fit to let you
in to their school does not mean everyone here will
blindly respect your views on the Dave Matthews Band.
Any comment/criticisms/death threats should be directed to him. Thanks.

Different Review." I don't care if you didn't like it,
Gregg, I posted it to create some hopefully intelligent
discussion. As I feared, the whole thing has
completely degenerated into a stereotypical
Greek-bashing fest (and my friend isn't even Greek, I
guess his friend Marcus or whatever must be). The
insults to Greeks, intelligence, etc. are just getting
old so let's just drop it. As I've said, I only hoped
that we could take it from a positive, critical
perspective instead of everyone getting pissed and
screaming and yelling (wasting everyone's time
defending the band). I know you like the band,
everyone does or you wouldn't be here reading this.
So anyway, let's move on please...

yesterday's digests. Sorry for the length. I believe
some of the comments went a little too far and that a
public response is mandated. (later, i will make up
for this by posting some more relevant info on the
Boston DMB show.)
i'll be perfectly honest. as soon as i saw the reference to uva greek, i
totally dismissed this article as not worth my time.

too. however, as soon as i see someone automatically
dismissing an article on the net, i think that person
is a bit rash.
as i mentioned before, i have very little respect for uva greek, based

system at UVA. i am wondering if the fact that it is
your only reference makes your judgement unfounded. do
the fratsters at DMB shows represent all the
fratstrers? do they all go to DMB? oh, and the fact
that Boyd kicks bootie on fiddle -- does that mean all
blacks people are great fiddlers? granted, the
fratsters at DMB shows may be exhibiting a typical
attitude, but i think it's unfair to increminate
specific fratsters (namely, the author to whom you were
responding) on the basis of what you've seen some other
"brothers" do at shows.
generally ignores what dave is
trying to do,

as "dave matthews BAND"
i can only assume that your
freind is among this crowd, based on his reference to warehouse and
halloween (FYI, 'dead and gone' would be known to most of us as 'rhyme
or reason'),

of U and ME. i think it would be just fine for a
non-fratster to dig Warehouse & Halloween. i also
think it is okay to call a song by a different name,
considering the true official titles can't really be
found out (unless Dave or someone announces the name at
a show you're at, or unless the song's on the newborn
CD.) [e.g. ARU does a song which i call "Peace and
Happiness" althogh i think the real name may be
something else (?)] so, please don't critisize someone
based on that. maybe we're not all as in-the-know as
you are.
i also assume that your freind comes from the base that thinks that boyd
is the heart and soul of this band. i don't think that i could imagine
this band without his almost hillbilly addition to the band, but it's
called 'the dave matthews band' for a reason.

of the BAND? it might as well be the "Joe Schmo Band"
for all i care. *if* any member outshines the others,
i don't think it's Dave, based on the ONE performance
i've seen. for the most part, they function as a
group. they belong together. granted, i have not seen
any Dave solo. i'm just unsure if your comment meant
"Dave is the heart" or "The whole band is the heart."
i'm so pissed at the narrow-mindedness of what i just read that i can't
even organize my thoughts on the subject.

man.
your freind apparently doesn't know jack shit about the music industry,
and the hassles of signing contracts and such,

cool, to know the grit about the scene? yeah, i'm
personally into knowing and analyzing, but it is not my
and should be clued into the fact that a major label
deal is in the works that should produce us a full studio disc next year.

'cause i read MINERATSnet daily. is everyone else
supposed to just glean the information from signs in
the heavens? sure, c-villers have lots of
opportunities to find that information, IF they choose
to associate with folks who know.
but still, dave is far from doomed. this is not dave's definitive work,
nor is he making it out to be. 'remember two things' is a debut album.

by Phish.
and tell your freind that he lives in
c-ville, and is more than welcome to go to TRAX each and every tue night
until he hears his beloved halloween song or spotlight.

series of books, actually. but there are lots of other
characters, with a variety of personalities and
stories, and the author sort of rotates through telling
about each of them as they come to interact. would you
be psyched to purchace a book per week until one
finally involved your hero? No. you should not be
expected to be elated about that. if someone wants to
hear a song and he doesn't ever seem to catch it at the
shows he goes to, he shouldn't be expected to start
shelling out time and money EVERY WEEK for a band. he
has a right to hope for certain songs without being
MINERATSer-than-thou. everyone who likes a band
doesn't have to be a total loyalist. now, if he starts
yelling for songs throughout the shows, then he becomes
obnoxious and is invading on everyone else's good time.

Well Reid...next time don't forward worthless opinions...

is worthless, though it may be wrong (an opinion again,
see?). So, folks, please do continue to forward info
relevant to DMB. pro and con are welcome. this is not
a net for DMB cheerleaders alone, it's for all
pertinate discussion.
Wrong. Your pompous attitude towards this band is disgusting...shut up...

preach, fellow.
I doubt you have ever listened to Dave's incredible lyrical talent. This
statement is among your most ignorant.

Dave's lyrics? I am personnally still mulling over
their value myself. no judgement yet. would it be okay
with you if i did decide i don't like the words?
Is it really a flat performance?

to me too in some ways. which is not to say DMB screwed
up; i think WSP's albums and Phish's albums are flat
as well.
...thank you again...moron...

and maybe you'll get as popular as Hitler became. very
very good! let's discourage any non-mainstream
opinions! yea! (sarcasm, albeit somewhat true...)
Known to the rest of the world as Rhyme or Reason...

to post. fact of the matter is, I didn't know that
either, and i've been netting since MINERATS inception.
someone's minor mistakes of semantics is not.
Yo yo yo boyeeee! It aint on no Columbia! Go back to the hood dork
...oops...forgot you are
really really dumb!

clarify "hood dork." oh, and i suppose you think
Galeleio [spell] was really really dumb too, just
because his opinion was different?
Leroi and Stephan are INTEGRAL parts of the band. I won't even bother trying
to convince you.

did offer your insights into the musicians. i
personally like them as they are, but i can understand
someone only liking some members. i feel that way
about other bands.
You are stomping on all of our buzzes...

I'm really disturbed...

mtg1@acpub.duke.edu Mon Nov 28 15:22:57 1994

a pair of cuticle scissors.

tell the whole story. Apologies if it gets a little lengthy,
but this yarn deserves to be spun well.

not taken care of with sufficient diligence, and it healed
incorrectly. Portions of the raw edge of the remaining
foreskin bonded to the glans, a little bit above the lower
edge of the glans. This left a series of "skin bridges",
basically sections of foreskin which can't be retracted,
because they are fused to the glans at one end and the shaft
at the other. These varied in width from about 1/16" to
1/4", and were attached off and on over about 2/3 of the
circumference.

time before I even realized it was abnormal. Everything
functioned properly, but there were a few minor problems
with it which made me wish I could fix it. Mainly,
1. It was a cosmetic defect -- it didn't look good.

2. It was tough to keep clean under the bridges -- I had to
swab it with a Q-tip now and then to knock down smegma
buildup.

3. Some of the most sensitive parts of the glans were
hidden under relatively insensitive chunks of foreskin,
robbing me of the proper stimulation which was mine and
every man's birthright.

it corrected, but there were problems. Doctors cost
money, and I didn't have it, and student insurance sure
wasn't gonna cover it. Plus, the thought of some strange
doctor chopping at my peepeehead gives me chills.

cut it and bandage it. "Hell, maybe I can do that!", I
thought. The problem was how to kill the pain. I
experimented with cutting myself (with an x-acto knife),
but seeing as it always hurt like hell before I even cut
anything, I never went through with it.

Again, the problem with the self-surgery approach was
dealing with pain. There had to be some way of numbing
the area, but how? One winter day, it hit me. If cold can
make fingers go numb, then cold can also make a
ManTool[tm] go numb. With this in mind, I pioneered a
the "home penile self-surgery procedure".

SURGERY KIT

Cuticle scissors (1 pair)
Rubbing alcohol (1 bottle)
Antibiotic ointment (1 tube)
Anti-bacterial soap (1 bottle)
Gauze pads (lots, various sizes)
Ice cubes (iodine added to water for sterility)
Clean Washcloth (freshly laundered with lots'o bleach)
Well-lit work area (the kitchen table)

PROCEDURE

Wipe down work area with alcohol. Clean penis with soap
and water, then with alcohol. Wash hands thoroughly.
Soak scissors in alcohol.

Holding the ice cube with the washcloth (to prevent your
fingers from going numb), apply the ice cube to the target
area. Hold for 5 to 10 minutes, until area is numb.

Using the cuticle scissors, sever the skin bridge as closely
as possible to its connection with the glans. Then sever the
foreskin end of the bridge in such a location as to leave an even
edge on the foreskin.

Use gauze pads and direct pressure to stop the bleeding, then
apply antibiotic ointment and bandage.

correctly, the healing process is a real pain in the ass. It
also takes a certain state of mind to be able to cut your
own flesh. I would kind of put myself into robo-man
zombie mode for the operations, in that I never dwelled on
what I was doing, I just mechanically plodded through all
the steps without thinking about how totally gross it was.

of the penis, and since I could only tolerate so much
trauma to my dick in one session, it took 6 separate
operations, spread out over a two week period, to
cut/remove all of the skin bridges.

Operation #1 (Day 1)
1/16" across. I held the ice cube on for 5 minutes. The
ice caused a peculiar kind of "cold ache", but it wasn't that
bad. I gingerly made the cuts, and sliced through with no
pain at all. There was some minor bleeding, but because
of the speed at which I worked, I had finished and had the
gauze on it before the wound had any chance to bleed
significantly. After about 10 minutes the bleeding was
stopped and I bandaged it up, no problem at all. Only a
tiny little speck of flesh had been removed, rather
unimpressive looking.

Operation #2 (Day 3)
big game this time. The target was the mother of all skin
bridges, about 1/4" across and very thick and meaty.
Again, I made the preparations and applied ice for 5
minutes.

surprised at how much I had to bear down on the scissors.
This skin was surprisingly tough. I finished that cut, and
then turned my attention to the cut on the foreskin side.
Wanting to get it done quickly, I decided that two large,
powerful snips should do the job. I bore down and made
the first cut, and realized with a shock that IT HURT LIKE
HELL.

skin bridge on that end, the cold hadn't penetrated deeply
enough, and it hadn't gone numb. So, I was left with a
problem. I had a half severed bit of foreskin hanging off
me, and no anesthetic. My only recourse was to finish the
cut. I thought, "Shit. This will hurt.". So I lined up the
scissors, closed my eyes, and as quickly and powerfully as
I could, I made the snip. My prediction was correct; it did
hurt (don't you hate when you're right about things like
that?). I managed to avoid shouting out, instead opting for
a few simple gasps and whimpers.

future operations.

bled much more profusely. It took about 20 minutes of
direct pressure and a lot of gauze until I could staunch the
main flow. Even then it kept oozing blood for a few
hours. I spent the rest of the evening with nothing on
below the waist, sitting in front of the TV with a few
brews (this became standard procedure for all forthcoming
operations). Any motion tended to make it break open and
bleed again, so I moved around very little. I was
functioning (that is, walking) almost normally again by the
next day, but it took about 5 days before this one
completely stopped oozing blood.

another brew, I spotted IT, the severed hunk-o-foreskin that
I had left on the table. It was of fairly good size, about
1/2" by 1/4" and maybe as thick as a piece of bacon.
Suddenly, strange thoughts entered my skull, and a raging
mental battle between good and evil ensued.

destiny."
diseases!"
diseases in there, you already got."
fingertip. BFD."

chewy, kind of like biting a little piece of rubber. I
chewed for about 5 minutes, but didn't make any progress
on breaking it down, so I swallowed it. It had a little bit
of blood flavor at first, but after that it had no flavor at all;
rather disappointing in that respect. Maybe I should have
cooked it.

Operation #3 (Day 10)
longer (10 minutes instead of 5), so there was no problem
with pain. Not nearly as much bleeding, but still a
respectable amount.

Any hard-on would tear the wounds open and start them
bleeding again. This would be a problem for about 3 or 4
days until the wounds had healed sufficiently. Basically,
I had to spend a long, long time without even thinking a
nasty thought. Of course, when I was asleep I had no
control over the process, which would always result in me
waking up with a dick that hurt and bloody bandages. I
was really lovin' life at moments like these.

Operation #4 (Day 12)
bonus of having a small vein (about 1 mm in diameter)
running through the skin bridge. Now, the blood supply
for the penis mainly runs through blood vessels buried deep
inside. When you get down the the small vessels, the
circulatory system becomes more of a spiderweb, with
redundant paths going to every point. So I knew it wasn't
actually dangerous to cut it, but it was still a kind of
psychological obstacle. I expected this one to be a heavy
bleeder, and I wasn't disappointed. It took about a full
hour of direct pressure to get the severed ends of the vein
to close up. Otherwise, not too much of a problem.

Operation #5 (Day 14)
but due to changes in the way skin tension was being
applied to the remaining bridges (because I'd cut some
others away), one small bridge was getting a lot of stress
and starting to hurt. So I chopped it quick and easy, no
real problems.

Operation #6 (Day 15)
transferred the stress to the next bridge down the line. So
even though I had about 3/4" of flesh left to cut, I resolved
to do it all at once in one last cutting frenzy.

complete (maybe 1 minute total), which gave the blood a
chance to flow. I had to stop a few times and wipe away
blood so I could see what I was doing. Strangely, this
didn't bother me at all. It seemed perfectly normal that I
should be wiping up copious amounts of blood flowing
from my bleeding pecker which I had sliced open myself.
Actually, it seemed kind of cool at the time, which led me
to speculate at the time that I had gone insane, which I also
thought was pretty cool.

dripped on to the chair, it went quite well. The only thing
that really grossed me out was when I noticed I had blood
all over my hands. If any psychoanalysts want to analyze
that tidbit for me, feel free, though I really don't care.

1. There are no scars to speak of, just a few bumps on the
glans. This is because I didn't trim the flesh quite close
enough in a few spots. They kind of resembling little
warts. I thought about going back and trimming them off,
but I kind of like 'em now. After all, it's not everyone
who has the privilege of appearing to have warts, with
actually being diseased.

2. Without the skin tension holding things back, total dick
length has increased by 1/4". (Of course I've measured the
length of my dick. Like you haven't?)

3. It's a great topic for dinnertime conversation. Women
generally seem to find it quite interesting. Men generally
turn kind of pale.

contemplating a few more self-surgical procedures. You
know, mole removal, wart removal, nose jobs, the whole
vista of cosmetic surgery. I'll need some help for that
mole on my back, which means training an assistant. Ah,
the future looks interesting indeed ...

Flame War

gjb@ccnet.com Mon Nov 28 15:39:52 1994

I just read the transcript of the recent flame war on this net. As well,
I read a post(s) bashing the Phish.net. From what I understand of the
beginnings of the phish.net it seemed to start out much the way minarets
currently seems to me, a discussion group among friends.

I have enjoyed Phish for several years now, and had heard the raves
about DMB. I worked in a record store and got a promotional copy of
"Rember Two Things." At first, I didn't get it. It was good, but it
didn't sweep me off my feet. I didn't realize most of it was live until
reading the liner notes after several listens. With Phish the
musicianship is overt. With DMB everything is much more subtle, almost
mellow, but it is clear the music is mellow on the surface, but very
frenetic beneath it. I think to an average untrained listener, it is
very difficult to hear what is going on right away. In today's fast
paced society, a lot of people who don't get it right away will dismiss
it. Clearly, people are starting to get it. "Under the Table.." is #1
on Rolling Stones "Alternative" chart.

I'm going to see The Dave Matthews band for the first 2 times this
weekend in San Jose and Davis with Phish. I'm really excited to see both
bands!

"A Prayer In The Pentagon"

Barrett.S.Shaver@dartvax.dartmouth.edu Mon Nov 28 15:46:42 1994

After some searching I finally found "A Prayer In The Pentagon", the poem by
Robert Dederick which Dave says inspired "Typical Situation", and I thought
I'd share it with the group. The poem can be found in a collection of
Dederick's works called "The Quest and Other Poems" published by Purnell of
Cape Town in 1968.
In case you want to know, I'm borrowing the book from UMass right now (it's
sort of hard to find). Thank you to Shannon for the help. Indents indicate
continuation of the previous line.

It's pretty convenient term and generally very temporary, and can be a
blessing. Anyway, in the course of my TAPE offer, I was asked several
times what exactly a newbie was. I think it's someone with few tapes,
rather than little time on the net. I responded with "5 or less" on a
whim, but maybe a collected effort could define a newbie (FOR OFFER
PURPOSES ONLY!).

so I am not sure if this is the entire show. The quality is A+, so you

Labeling and newbies etc....

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Mon Nov 28 18:02:10 1994

After mucho thinkning on this topic, I have come to a conclusion. Someone
else will eventually name us, whether we like it or not. As a recent post
said, a name stems from convienice. We use 'newbies' as a name to offer
tapes to those with few, or to explain to someone what exactly the hell
FTP means. Someone else out there who is not in our little bubble, nor
wants to be, will give us some kind of name for their convienience. I am
assuming dead-heads was created by someone besides a dead fan, and we
created Bagbys as a convenient word for bootlegs. Speaking of Bagbys...

1)Dan gave me tapes with return postage at Wait chapel, but the address
was to Radford (I think) and they have been mailed, so sorry Magus...

2)Get 7-6-93 or 7-7-93, Greg Howard is a god, and to quote dave "One
person, two hands...."

3)Trent Reznor is a musical mastermind, i bow down now....|\| | |/|

4)I abhor self inflicted surgery, but self piercing is very cool....

Kudos......

Rant and Rave.

mus4rlm@cabell.vcu.edu Mon Nov 28 18:05:51 1994

hey all.

in complete helpless states of boredom. i turned on the picture tube.
straight to MTV of course, cause i thought it would be the only thing
entertaining. hey, maybe i could catch that DMB interview i have yet
to see. but little did i know what had happened to this cable network
station while i was gone.

makes up 1/3 of programming and the rest of the programming is trying
to program its main audience. the 15-25 age group i would say. yes i
believe most of us fall under this category on this net. give or take
a few years. but anyway.... i was watching a video at 5 in the morn
of Tom Petty's new song ..." you don't know how it feels to be
MEEEEEEE...." and i heard this obnoxiuos fucking noise in the coolest
part of the song. he's supposed to say " and lets get to the point,
and roll another joint..." but Mr.MTV made him say " lets get to the
point and roll another BLAAAARRANNGAAA...." whoa. i was pissed. why
do they edit out that word? Then Snoop Dogggy Dog's "Gin and Juice"
song came on. now a few months ago they only edited out a little bit,
but the version i heard,at 5 in the morn mind you, sounded like Snoop
had a major case of the stutters. you could'nt understand a damn
thing he was saying due to the silence MTV put on certain words.
influence MTV actually has on the youth of this nation, the Govt.started
to place restrictions and such. CONTROL. so now MTV can't be a rebel
leader 'cause they have Big Daddy looking at 'em with open eyes, ears
and pockets. The saying that goes " there's TV and there's MTV" is
so true.....
town in IOWA of all places. it was such a small community that
everyone in the town could leave their coffee cup at the Hardee's
and the counter person would know which cup was yours!!! i was
scared. anyway, the kids of this town had nothing linking them to
the other youth of the nation besides what MTV showed them. this
town breeded misfits and MTV clones to the tee. they made up
problems that didn't exist and acted liked their favorite MTV
personality thinking it was reality. it freaked me out,but they
seemed to be enjoying themselves,so let it be. this just showed me
what an impact TV and MTV can have. so back to the government. the
big boys on capitol hill really saw what an impact the youth had on
the 92 elections for President, thus seeing how powerful MTV was at
spreading information to their audience. if you go back and watch
MTV during the 92 race for President it is ridiculous at how far
they leaned toward Clinton. well we're not the only ones that
noticed. because it seems that after the elections MTV went thru
some major changes in their programming.
that was just blatant censorship. yes, pot is still illegal, but
Tom was just capturing a feeling. granted we don't want 12 year
olds running around thinking they're cool for smoking pot,or IOWANS
thinking they are drug pins(though all in fun)............. a few
words in a song are not going to make a junkie. taking the words out
of a song are gonna' make kids wonder. the VERY AWARE are gonna'
seek out the answer. when you cut a piece of a picture out you don't
overlook it, you wonder what the hell was there! sooo....you take
something away and its human nature to wonder WHY it was taken
away. am i making sense i hope so. my brain has been around too long
already and its hard to make words of my sense.
don't be surprised if the streotypical "X" generation person
appears on MTV one day with a flag in one hand and another flag
under foot.
the commercial would go as follows.

are doing. - {fill in propaganda} - So I've come to this conclusion,man.
WAR is cool."

o.k. this seems a little bit overboard. they are some instances in
the world where there is no other choice but to use force in order
to attain peace. i have experienced this first hand i am sure. but...
it seems that the fighting of today is for CONTROL of temporal
matter, and thats it. Dave Matthews says everything perfect in "CRY
FREEDOM "

Dave goes on to say that wars divide us as well.

well if freedom is just a state of mind, mine has been temporarily
fucked with by a freakin' TV.

" Pour a pitcher of water and honey on your TV then step outside and

i'm out of control. sorry to write all this. but i just happened to
be on the Minaret net when it all hit me. and i had to free my head
from the thick confusion. PEACE.

***This post has other important info. below this babble. READ ON if you

you see it written down...well, i just read my own post and i still
don't see my thoughts clearly. pick what you can out of it.
Basically, think i was bummed on the fact that the govt. has crept
into yet another aspect of my life. i don't need a leader,
exsperience is my teacher. there is someone who posts on the net
that has a quote after their name about "questioning authority".
read it. it makes sense.

********************************************
to answer the Bagby's question. yes, it came from my mixed-up attic
of babble. i was trying to create some Californiain lingo for bootleg
and came up with Bagby. i told Jeff some of us on the net had started
AHHHHAAA, but i could tell he was honored. those that know the
Bagman can attest that he is very modest and one the coolest people
to hang with. not to mention he gets good ___. {fill in a plant}
and also allows for the confusion and mayhem that surrounds the
tapers concert realm....

so for Jeff to allow miracles such as this to happen,
we must tap him as the leader of the tapers and name his little
oblong magnetic children after him.
All hail to the BAGMAN !!!!.

**************************************************************
interested if you can trace it. not the obvious meaning, but where it
came from. it will take some sleuthdom and questioning of fellow
Minetters...
free of charge. no obligations.
one old and one new.
i will throw in a picture of Dave from long ago and bald. Both
questions must be answered to receive both or one. or you can just
tell me to go to hell and ask your next door neighbor for some
Bagby's. but its sooo fun to be challenged.... LATES.

advice needed

jfogelso@emerald.tufts.edu Mon Nov 28 21:56:57 1994

This is kind of stupid, but it's been getting at me for a while and I have
to ask it and hope that some sensible person can answer it for me. Here
Suppose you have been working very hard at improving your bagby
collection for some time and you return home with a few of your
favorites(say 20), only to be assulted with pleas from your best friend
and younger sister to copy every single tape. Now, these people do not
have the resources to get access to any dmb tapes themselves, so out of
compassion you let them copy at will, but VERY BEGRUDGINGLY. After all,
you worked your ass off taping and trading like a fool and they're
copying your stuff for free, with nothing to trade and no remote promises
of anything within the next age. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?
-Also,anyone have a copy by some rare chance of dmb, ocean blue, and the
connells from August of 1992? This was my first time seeing dmb, when I
first heard spotlight, which made me fall in love with the band.
Thanks to all who read and responded.
Be nice as much as your sanity can allow,

...but theres a whole nother side to go and you never know
what might pop up. its already fun to listen to. there are alot of
teasers on it, if you know what i mean. beginnings or middle or
endings of songs. but each holds a certain significance. its sorda
like that song "hooked on classics". a whole bunch of things strung
together. it has no chronological or particular order either. hell,
i stayed up until 5 again last nite, ended up getting drunk while
pursuing this tape, read 50 pages of "run with the hunted" as
suggested by our goddess of the net, and danced a mean tribal dance
to Minarets after a sudden burst of 4 a.m. energy. so you take this
tape with that in mind and lets groove sometime and come steppin' in
A.M. together. PEACE.

Re: Rant and Rave.

l_leclai@hamlet.uncg.edu Tue Nov 29 11:12:27 1994

 hey all.

i couldn't sleep last nite so i decided to do something i only do
in complete helpless states of boredom. i turned on the picture tube.
straight to MTV of course, cause i thought it would be the only thing
entertaining. hey, maybe i could catch that DMB interview i have yet
to see. but little did i know what had happened to this cable network
 station while i was gone.

i was watching a video at 5 in the morn
of Tom Petty's new song ..." you don't know how it feels to be
MEEEEEEE...." and i heard this obnoxiuos fucking noise in the coolest
part of the song. he's supposed to say " and lets get to the point,
and roll another joint..." but Mr.MTV made him say " lets get to the
point and roll another BLAAAARRANNGAAA...." whoa. i was pissed. why
do they edit out that word? Then Snoop Dogggy Dog's "Gin and Juice"
song came on. now a few months ago they only edited out a little bit,
but the version i heard,at 5 in the morn mind you, sounded like Snoop
had a major case of the stutters.

This was very disturbing to me also. I saw the dreaded edit of T. Petty
on VH1 (the things I watch when I'm babysitting and the kids are
asleep.) Couldn't believe they did that to the song, when the program on
right before was a stand-up comedy show and I couldn't beleive the things
they allowed them to say on the air. I'm not one for censorship, but at
least they could be consistent!

I never want to see a Dave video if the tv's gonna cut stuff out. I
mean, can you imagine right before Jimithing, Dave saying "here's a song
about getting brrbjsisdk...."?? Just wound't be good.

on another note, I seem to have lost my set one of Dave and Tim at the
wetlands last January, right when I need it for a trade. Won't grovel
yet, I'll clean the months worth of build-up out of my car first. Man I
hope it's there underneath the stale saltines and the AAA maps!

Take it easy!

-Dash :)

I gots some questions..

jcdavis@wam.umd.edu Tue Nov 29 11:59:45 1994

Some questions...

I have a tape from Trax 9/93 where Greg Howard sits in on Chapman for
Steffan cuz' the crazy little guy put his little ol' hand through a window.
davetalk(tm) and then he plays a really really cool song that is labeled
as "???" on the tape. Now I assume that this is one of those ""untitled"
ever play this song again? on any other tapes? I really like it.

Ok a 'nother question...

In hopes of perhaps giving everyone a very merry christmas( or happy
chanukah, joyful quanza, silly solstice, depending) I thought it would be
nice if those of us with numerous tapes could post their tape lists so
that those of us seeking rarities could contact those in possesion of
said rarities. Even as I write this I realize this could be a bad idea as
many people will be receiving alot of mail so perhaps someone could
come up with a better idea.

ooh ooh! a nother one!

this time a short one. Are NYE tix sold out? if so does anyone have extras?
thanks..

FORTINJS@UCBEH.SAN.UC.EDU Tue Nov 29 12:13:21 1994

Hello DMB fans,
been to busy with school. But most of you probably know how that is. So if you
just want facts and not discussion read on my brothers and sisters, read on.

Topic number 1: Potatoe???
been misspelling dave's name which really pisses me off. After all we are all
brought together because of this man and his band the least you could do is
spell his name right.

Topic number 2: Over 21 shows
the closest they have been to me at school(Cincinnati if you cared), was at
Indiana University at a club. That was no problem and i was more than willing
to drive the two hours there but wasn't i pissed off when the lady at ticket
master told me the bar was a twenty-one and over club. Extremely pissed off i
called the club, I can splurge for exspensive phone calls during day rates, and
try to see if there was any way to get in the club. I even have an i.d. but the
lady was pretty cool and explained that they check the i.d.'s very well and
that i probably would not get in. She agreed with me that the policy was
bullshit but there was nothinmg to do about it. So i very calmly said thanks
and hung the phone up, and yelled FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
God Damn was i pissed off, in fact i still am. I have not seen DMB isnce the
summer and only a total of twice. I do not expect any of you to do anything
about this i just wanted to bitch. Thanks for listening.

Topic number 3: DMB music or lack of
fans and hopefully trade some tapes. I have already gotten numerous reply's
and thank each one of you because after all one can never have to much DMB.
But beforte the net i had never heard of "trees" and am now very interested in
participating, if anyone needs help on a project or one in the future mail me
because i would love to help out.

Topic number 4: DMB in OHIO?
University and was wondering if he was going to play there again this year? If
anybody knows please tell me.

Topic number 5: personal
difficult about our relationship. Can you tell i'm pussy wipped? Love????

Topic number 6: Band members
met any of the band members and gotten to talk to them. I have met Dave and
Boyd, but when i met them i was in such awe i did not even think to talk to
them. It is one of those things i think i will always regret. Dave just
finished playing about ten songs by himself after the band played for an hour
and a half(this was on the hoard tour) and i went up to get his autograph. He
signed my recently cover and then i shook his hand. Damn his hands were strong!
Do not know if any of you noticed that. Then i just looked at him, i think he
was waiting for a question or just to talk and all i could say was THANKS!!!!
What a dumb ass i was!!!! If i could just meet him know i have about a thousand
questions i like to ask him about the songs, the lyrics, his life, and life in
general.
hides? I know he is young christ i am older than him, but i wonder what he is
like as a person???

Thanks a lot for listening and am waiting for responses,

Ooh ooh! I know! That song was a one-time thing. It was all improvised
and if you listen to the lyrics you can kinda tell, it's about being
stuck in the snow coming down route 2 to the show. or something like that.

It really doesn't have a name though.. since Dave didn't specify one.

Early X-mas gift?

jjthomps@teton.Mines.Colorado.EDU Tue Nov 29 16:26:26 1994

I taped a few shows last week when DMB was in Colorado. At just about
every one I handed out my address to people who asked about getting copies.
I though I was doing people a favor, Until- I get this package comes in the
mail, 2 brand new maxell IIs tapes. But here's the problem, not only isn't
there a return mailer with postage, OR a note saying which show they want
me to tape, but there is no indication of who sent the tapes - no note, not
even a freaking return address, not to mention a ph #, and I can't even
read the postmark (as if it would help)

type of follow-up letter saying "oh, I'm sorry I forgot..." but no sign -
Any ideas on what to do? Or did someone just send me an early Christmas
gift?

and roll another joint..." but Mr.MTV made him say " lets get to the
point and roll another BLAAAARRANNGAAA...." whoa. i was pissed. why

I heard some discussion on this awhile ago. Here's the info I got - take
it as you like. Tom Petty, acting independently of The Man, recorded two
versions of said song. The album version says, "Let's roll another
joint." and the other, included on a radio station promo (whether it was
a single or an extended album I don't know) said, "Let's hit another
joint" - a slightly more ambiguous phrase possibly meaning let's go
somewhere else. I find it interesting then that MTV is playing a video
done to the original version and bleeping rather than just using the
promo version. So...whatever.

Cheers,

Justin

Inspiration from Chardy...

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Tue Nov 29 18:42:29 1994

Cha's idea of the davetalk tape made me think of other possibilities, esp
since I am too lazy to compile something that would take so long.
I am thinking of making a dave rare tunes tape, like the first inceptions
of songs and such. ie Heathcliff's, granny solo from 11/17/92, any noise
from 7-14-93 (my favorite), say goodbye solo from HSC or Blacksburg. and
other stuff like the beautiful dave/peter cry freedom 11/17/92 and the
truckers cb coming through stephan's amp during Back You Up (7/14 i
think). Stuff like tangerine and sweet home alabama and nature and me and
julio and tripping billies with only boyd and dave and seek up solo and....
the possibilities are endless (isn't that some ad?) anyways, more brain
babble for ya.....

P.S. Chardy, you HAVE to put the afore mentioned "tongue in my butt"
davespeak from 7-14, its the funniest thing I have ever heard. I know you
have it, I saw you tape it....

peace to all and to all a good nite...

nonsense is the inability of the listener to listen creatively

CLIFFORDC@urvax.urich.edu Tue Nov 29 19:45:41 1994

lesse....
buford and blake we're having a little discussion about any-noise's first
debut. i mistakenly told blake that dave played it on 6.22.93, but i have
it as filler on that show, from the 7.27.93 show.

so i'm going to venture to concur with dear mr.kiss-and-make-up that
7.7..93 was the first time any noise was played. dave prefaces the song
by saying something like... 'this song is about making noise.... [singing
to his strumming] any noise... any noise....' hence... the title. heh.

i have no one to spoon with tonight....

Question?

lund4649@blue.UnivNorthCo.EDU Tue Nov 29 19:47:12 1994

This is Mike from colorado.....i'd have to say that DMB kicks ass when they
play with the Samples...especially when they opened for them last january
at the Snowmass Conference Center....but, the best show i've seen them play,
though i haven't seen them that often, would be when they rocked Vail last
September with the Freddy Jones Band and Jackopierce....anyhow, who knows
how i could hook up with some live recordings of DMB, especially of their
newer songs from "Under the Table and Dreaming"??? Just wanted to know,

RE: Rant and Rave

Leroi's tour drink of choice could be Orange Juice. At least that is
what he wanted when I saw them play a 6 song acoustic set at a music
store a couple of months ago.

The band was 2 and half hours late, and seemed pretty tired. They played
without any amplification except Dave's voice and guitar and Carter kind
of "beat-boxing" into a mike.
Home (Dave Only), Tripping Billies, and probably another one or two, but
it was a while ago.

When the managers brought in pizzas (there is a pizza place downstairs),
Dave threw out his favorite line about CHEESE. And then in front of a
sold-out crowd at the House of Blues, he used it AGAIN. Hmm... Maybe it
is a campaign against dairy products.

Re: Williams College

axvann@minerva.cis.yale.edu Tue Nov 29 19:50:41 1994

I posted this question once before a couple of weeks ago and didn't
get any responses from anyone, and damn it, I know someone knows the
answer!!!... Unfortunately I don't have the funds to offer free tapes and
such if someone responds but I'm always willing to make copies for people...
 Anyway, to the point...

I have a copy of the Williams College show, 12/11/93, and the opening song
is labeled "Route 2"... My friend has the same tape and his opener is
labeled "Walking"... I haven't heard or seen this song on any other bagby,
 anybody know anything about it?

 Mucho gracias....
                                 Fred House

I thought I responded last time. Anyway, here goes again -
we had a discussion about this a while back. Seems Route 2 was written by
Dave while the band was lost in a Massachusetts snowstorm and late to
arrive to the show (see the lyrics and this will make sense). Because the
band was late, the tune sort of served as a soundcheck. To my knowledge,
it's never been played again. Too bad, if you ask me. Some work and it
could be something interesting. Eventually. For now it's just a nice rarity.

Maybe this should go in the FAQ. Along with an explanation of Blue Water.
I've answered questions on these two songs several times.

No newbie offer yet. I'm trying to be creative.

mother do you think she's dangerous?

CLIFFORDC@urvax.urich.edu Tue Nov 29 20:34:18 1994

sorry victor.. i'll have to greatly disagree on teh orange juice
statement... not that it might not be a fav of roi's, but i'm tempted to
wager prized possessions that roi's fav tour drink is makers mark.
i know this from personal experiences, and many glasses of said liqour
with roi himself. along with smokes, of course.

ah.. speaking of smokes... i say we all have a net cigarette
together... at precisely 11:45 pm please join me for a cigarette ( or
insert smoke ofyour choice). you are cordially invited. and i'll be ever
so looking forward to this bonding ritual with whoever else participates.

worry-free, you know me!

All the DMB I have at moment is the 9/4 HORDE set. Thanks in advance,

rants marching into my head won't leave my head alone...

POT POT POT POT POT POT POT.

MARIJUANA............MARY JANE.

let me take this opportunity to say let's not turn this thread into
a discussion on whether you should get stoned at a dmb show or not.
that's about as moot as discussing on this net why my university's
president keeps deciding to put campus flower pots ahead of student
needs.

here's my take on the eMpTyVee thing-o-morama....

government has nothing to do with it. i would ask you, chardy, to
prove that statement. our government may be big, but it's not big
enough to put a restriction on drug references on a cable tv station
without being discovered so fast you don't have time to hide your
roach.

i think it's a doo-gooder holier-than-thou effort by an elitist organization
to think that they are having an effect on a particularly politically
volatile issue. there's no denying that eMpTy Vee as a corporation takes
the "just say no" stance, even though i highly suspect that this makes a
substantial number of the decision makers there hypocrites (imagine that).

eMpTy Vee is simply trying to redeem their obvious lack of social value by
espousing a drug free mentality.

it, we just elected a president to this country."

bored member 1: "whoa, dude, too cool. but if we're in this kind of spotlight,
maybe we should think about our credibility."

bored member 2: "yeah, man. if bob dole finds out that we were stoned when
we decided to endorse clinton, we're toast."

bored member 3: "let's create two stupid little country redneck kids who see
us for what we really are and laugh and say sux all the time."

(everyone looks around a bit unnerved, then CeO looks at bored member 3....)

EmPtY CeO "you're fired."

bored member 2: "well, if we just oppose everything that made us big and then
not tell anyone, we've got it made and we'll be able to elect presidents for
the next century."

boy?????????????" (sound of EmPtY CeO lighting up.)

jupiter."

bored member 1:"whoa, that was good......"

and what about dave. this is dave.net, right? hmmmmm.....

this is only open to people who are digestified, because i know they
get screwed out of a lot of newbie offers.

the first 3 people to mail the header of this digest to me will get their
choice of a copy of 11-17-92 or 11-9-94. if you can't edit digest, just
go ahead and forward the whole damn thing to me. there's a good chance
that making this offer is going to really fill my mailbox, and if that
happens no one will be able to get through to me, so if you can edit out
the body of the message, please do.

you'll have to mail blanks and postage, and i'll have to wait until
x-mas break to actually get the tapes done. but there's the offer. i
haven't spread my wealth around in a long time, and i feel better this
way.

congratulations if you made it this far, and, believe it or not, i'm
not stoned right now. sockiology is just such a boring class and i
have no choice but to act strange for a while (hence all the political
