Re: i little ploy to get a song played...

jtv2j@sunipc-10.unixlab.virginia.edu Mon Oct 10 21:05:25 1994

I'm personally expecting a Drive in, drive out to show up soon,
especially since Dave and Carter soundchecked it at the UVa
Ampitheatre (It's kind of like they did bring it back for me
having heard him play it this month)
However, his reluctancy to keep So Much to Say in the rotation
after he played it on the 25/26 Feb shows makes me think it's not
likely to show up for a while. But, since this is all theory anyway,
I'll bet you we see it again long before we see Spotlight (or some
variation on spotlight) come back...

But, I'll be hoping for both, every show I'm at....
(Who wants them to play everything I love when I'm NOT there?? ;)

Re: MINARETS digest 312

@uvmvm.uvm.edu:PMEA8678@URIACC.URI.EDU Mon Oct 10 21:43:05 1994

Ok,Since I was the one who posted the review of the Providence show
I thought I'd clear some things up.Before "Get in Line"Dave seemed to
be playing the progression in front of Carter to show him the rythym.
Stephan was there all the way and it seemed like Boyd was in and out with some
plucking.Leroi just stood there motionless until he ripped a nice little
solo at the end.The tune was pretty fast with fairly clear words
that had the title in their somewhere. This is the title since Dave
notified us before it began. As for "Cry Freedom Cry" everyone did do something
and the words did seem the same as the only version I have of
this.It was incredible and the crowd was completely silent as it seemed
like I was the only one that knew what was going on.(Even the Tapers)Dave
didn't say anything about it which made it all the better.
#36 Dave said it was written for Chris Hanni but had turned into a song about
love.
P.s.Not to hassle the faq people but "All Along the Watchtower"was
originally written by Bob Dylan.(Jimi Hendrix)

so let's see if someone important is paying attention (we've been
told a couple of times that they are, haven't we?)

so how's about a drive in, drive out or so much to say?

I didn't know they were opening till I got to UVA that day. What a

Northamton Tix

IBASSIN@WESLEYAN.BITNET Mon Oct 10 23:05:48 1994

Does anyone have an extra and/or a ride to Northampton from Middletown, Ct?
If yes, please call me at 203-685-5224 so we can go see Dave.
Also, the song that I have listed as "Friendship Song" is this the real name?
Was it a regularly played song early on? Did Dave write it? It has a sort
of inaudible chorus with the line, "We'll meet again" It's in Set II of 3/23/93.
Thanks, Ian

Tripping Ants

Fellow Davers,
perfectly after Ants Marching? Tripping ends on the second chord of
Ants. I think I would just about lose all control of my senses if they
segwayed (is that a word?!) the two.

Thoughts?

UTTAD, Deep in the Heart of Texas

HFEJP@utxdp.dp.utexas.edu Tue Oct 11 12:14:14 1994

Records reports that Under the Table and Dreaming is "Selling out of control"
in this land of country line dancing. It is on their Top 25 for the second
week in a row, right behind Boyz II Men. It is currently selling better than
Blues Traveler, Rusted Root, and Big Head Todd (but not REM of course). This
buying frenzy seems to be feuled almost exclusively by word of mouth, since
Dave and the boys have yet to venture to the Lone Star State, and they have
recieved no press coverage down here as far as I've seen.

News like this makes me happy.

Cry Freedom/#36/New Tune/General Happiness

NebuIous@aol.com Tue Oct 11 14:00:01 1994

Oh joy! I am extremely pleased now. Too bad Dave couldn't get out of his
rut in time for the Roseland show.

a) best doesn't open the show (i guess it's a given that they'll play it)

b) cry freedom (oh god i can't believe it)

c) new tune, even if i haven't heard it... yet

d) #36 awakens

e) granny (yippee skippy!)

f) jane, even if it will never be more than 4 minutes

Oh this is so heartening... i was getting scared for a few weeks.

sorry to be a bandwith-maven, especially since we're getting 30+ posts a day,
but I just can't sit here bouncing in my chair all day...

happiness and bells for all,

Hey Rick! I made it!

JPETERS@CENTER.COLGATE.EDU Tue Oct 11 19:55:28 1994

and I don't want to pontificate, but there's a little something that's been
puzzling to me since Remember Two Things came out. In the liner notes they
printed that some (does anyone know how many and which ones) songs were
recorded live at The Muse in Nantucket, RI. I'm not sure who messed this up
but The Muse and Nantucket are in Massachusettes, not Rhode Island. I caught
the band's three shows there this summer (aug. 1-3) and Dave even mentioned the
fact that they'd recorded a few of the tunes on the album "in this very room."
Someone might want to look into that little error.

could I have been...a lifeguard on the seashore, Nantucket?

damn. my subject lines are too pragmatic. i should take lessons from
clare.

anyway, freindship song is nothing more (or maybe nothing less) than
#34 with lyrics. i liked it better that way.

and people, people was written by peter. i personally think it would
sound incredible on 1)dave's chet 2)a nice grand piano.

at any rate, i wouldn't be surprised if we see it appear on a cd, but
never see them play it, just because dave doesn't want to leave peter
out.

Does anybody out there agree with me that the best Dave shows
are when Roi is whaling and ripping through his solos. I feel
he is the emotional barometer for the band. Boyd is always
animated, so that's a given. Stefan is always lifeless (no
offense), Carter is always solid, and Dave is unpredictable.
But when Roi is making the most of his interludes, he can
make the worst show on paper be the best to be there in

Very true, but Roi can also make the best shows on paper the worst live.
For instance, Lie in Our GRaves is killer when Roi is ripping up a killer
solo thats in key and top notch, but if Roi is off I usually get through
the five minute solo by going to the bathroom and attempting to get a beer..
(kinda what satellite is for these days too)

Anyways, very VERY happy to see Cry Freedom ressurected. While nothing
beats a Dave/Peter version, the full band one is a close second. Anyways
gettin ready for WSP tonite!!!!!

Dave Matthews: master servant

ksexton@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu Wed Oct 12 16:17:18 1994

---------- Forwarded message ----------

this is a question to the legion of so called supporters of Dave Matthews and
his supporting cast. Dave Matthews is one of the best guitarrists that has
ever taken stage in any land and yet there is something bothering about him.
may it be that possesses such a talent and uses it to try to get laid all the
time? One of his better songs, HALLOWEEN, which by the way sounds like shit on
that over-priced ep he put out a while back, is superb because it's so dark and
evil sounding. This is no happy song and the guitar work, the movement of his
hands shadows this fury of anger. To ask of Matthews to write only songs of
this nature would be like asking Jesus only to forgive some sinners and not all
Of course he cannot and do that but does he have to write such sappy love
songs? I am myself a fan of dmb and will be fortunate enough to see him on the
28th at the vic in chicago, but unfortunately I do not look forward to the
audiences love actions to these easy listening songs!

this is the view of the sender not of the fowarder...so any responses,
please send to that address, not mine. thanks.

hi everybody.... clare's in a great mood... great great great mood...

about stefan... i'll just say stefan is one of the most talented bassists
around... he is not 'lifeless'... and sir buford's ever so tactfull choice of
vocab to describe him as 'sublte' is much more appropriate. the large 'stefan
is the man' (no.. not blake... but stefan...) ensued earlier towards
minarets.net's inception.... and the general consensus of his ability was
reached. on a personal level... stefan is a shy performer. this does not
detract from his musical talent. it just means he doesn't catch your eye the
way that boyd's shit-eating-grin does. watch stefan at a few shows... he rocks
hsi ass of back there by carter... he jams the jam with amazing poise. one on
one.. stefan is animated and exciting... and he'll lead the converrsation...
unlike what some would think....

ok. what else was i going to say. oh yeah.... nice little ditty in our school
paper (not the ur paper.. i dont' go to ur.. the vatech paper... the CT) it has
this quote that i thought i'd share with you all..... hit delete now if you
don't give a flying fuck.... [it's a promo for disc jokey and UTTAD]
teh release of their spectacular RCA debut album, UTTAD, you can expect an even
greater uproar. Dave Matthews has teamed with a galaxy of local jazz stars
Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard, LeRoi Moore and Boyd Tinsley to give us a
sparkling, and original, mix of acoustic songwriting and jazz instrumentation.
Dave Matthews Band has teamed with award-winning producer Steve Lillywhite
(whose credits include U2 and XTC) to give UTTAD an even more exciting appeal
to their mushrooming base of fans. Once you hear this special music by these
supremely talented artists, you, too, will echo the comments of one music
critic who said, "If you can sit still listening to this band live, you've
missed your funeral........." '

so here i give it to you..... this little burb....
DISCUSS!

oh.. keep those articles coming.... this file is booming and rocking and what's
happening so far is only foreplay....

doug, i have the zollman's show and you have the first set with some
other stuff after ants. the second set has pay for what you get, tripping
billies, jimmy thing, typical, jane, warehouse, and halloween. just wanted
to write and let you know what you have and what you're missing. let me
know if you want to trade. i'd be more than happy to help you out. alexis.

Just got in a pretty nice DMB board, it's from Zollmans Pavilion, Lexington
5/31/93. If anyone wants a copy, I'll trade it for another good quality DMB
tape with first few people who respond. It fits on one 90 min tape.

and, by the way...looking for a boot of July 28, Irving Plaza NY (1994)...

 1) what are the two things dave wants us to remember?

Well- I think he's said a few different things. My favorite-

"...It's called Remember Two Things, and they're whatever you want them
to be... Oh yeah, I just remembered the two things- they're 'buy a t-
shirt, and buy another t-shirt'"

Dave and Boyd had been plugging t-shirts non- stop the whole show. I
think this is actually the Zollman's show of recent discussion. BTW- I
clocked the Jimi Thing on that show at 21 minutes. Is that some sort of
record? Am I the only loser who actually pays attention to these things?

And another thing. With these Phish/ DMB shows coming up, I was thinking
how perfect it would be if Phish played "Uncle Pen" with Boyd. Have they
ever done this? It seems too perfect. Sorry if this makes no sense to
non- Phish fans.

And finally- If they bring back Spotlight, they should change that line
about life is so peachy. There has to be a more lyrical way to phrase that.

Don't get me wrong, I love the new CD. "Best" has always been my favorite and
it sounds great here. But the pacing on "Ants" and "Satellite" just don't
seem right. And as some have mentioned, Boyd is way too far down in the mix.

I think John Alagia (producer - "R2T") knows this band well and can get the
most out of them. I guess you've got to use an established producer on your
major label debut, but I'd like to see John get involved again.

For those of you who are newcomers to the band through "UTTAD", I highly
recommend "R2T." It captures the essence of the band that perhaps we may
never hear again.

Interested in everyone's thoughts...

21 and up. That would be a good thing. I am tired of going to shows and

Anyone have any idea what song this is? Anyways, help with Colorado tour

I agree that Boyd's sound isn't as prominent as it is on Remember Two
Things and the EP; however, I love the distortion he has on his solo on
Jimi Thing.
My school's paper, the Emory Wheel, ran a brief article on DMB last
Friday. The author was a student. He spoke highly of the band, and he
named all of the musicians and their instruments correctly except for
Leroi, who he said played guitar along with Dave. Oh well . . . .

UTTAD cover

For those of you running Xwindows, the new album cover makes an
awesome background. I've scanned it in at 400x400, and its size is
1084 x 997 (Ie, most people will want to size it down just a bit P-)
The tif is a bit over 3 meg, the gif is a bit over 1/2 a meg. I'll
convert it to any other form for someone who can't do it themself if
you just ask. The gif and tif are available on the web on my home
Anyone want to see Recently or R2T? I've also been thinking about
scanning in any articles with pix I've found lying around. Anyway,
let me know what you'd like to see on the web, and if I can get ahold
of it, I'll put it up for anyone to snag.

New Subscribers TAKE NOTICE....

jcrother Thu Oct 13 13:09:06 1994

Since there are so many new users as of late and I'm being flooded with
questions and problems, I'll post this again.

Maybe once Minarets is moved to Netspace, the listproc software can be
revised to add the information bar at the end of each digest simliar to
Dat-heads, phish.net, ect... We'll see.

If you feel like you're getting overwhelmed with mail from this mailing
list, you may want to try digestifying the list. Digestifying Minarets
simply means bundling all the posts from one day [roughly] into one
compact, complete, simple message. In other words, instead of receiving
ten messages from Minarets, you'll receive one at the end of the day [or
whenever] containing all ten. It's a matter of preference.

To digestify send only and exactly the message, "set minarets mail
digest" to listproc@moose.uvm.edu

If you still feel overwhelmed and no longer care to be part of this
community, send exactly and only the message, "unsub minarets" to
listproc@moose.uvm.edu

I heard a rumor today that DMB is going to play with Blues Traveler on
Halloween in Boulder, Colorado. I also heard today that this isn't true.
So if anybody out there knows what's going on, let me know.

Someone already pointed out that ARU is playing this show with BT. Dave
Matthews Band will most likely be in Europe for Halloween. Still haven't
heard any confirmed dates except the one Amsterdam show on Nov 2.

Isn't Stefan from Amsterdam? I think he has some ties at least.
Some tape some where mentions something. Nice and Vague.

Re: MINARETS digest 314

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Thu Oct 13 15:28:42 1994

I've been known to call that "Cry About It" or just plain "#34". Is this
a mistake on my part or is Friendship Song one of those Haiku deals--
made up by us and not recognized by the band?

i'd definitely have to say that it's a fan based thing. i've never heard
it called freindship song until now. at that show mentioned in the
original post (3-23-93, none other than big league chew), dave specifically
calls it #34, so it's kind of ironic that the person's tape has it labled
wrong. even big league chew has it labeled as #34 (but for some reason
has dancing nancies labeled as 'turtles, turtles, turtles and more
turtles).

now here's an interesting new thread. let's try and compile a list of
1)names by dave for songs that have since changed to something more
2)names created by fans for songs

revolution 1: recently

i'm not going to list off the entirety of big league chew here, but i
thought i'd share some of the more interesting ones.

for those of you that don't know, big league chew is the name of the
last show at trax that peter griesar ever played. one of the individuals
who taped this show decided to be a bit creative with song
titles. i personally say it's a must have for any dave matthews fan,
due to the seven song acoustic set, as well as the amusing setlist, BUT,
i have no dubbing equipment anymore, so don't ask. anyone want to set up
a tree?

and people, people was written by peter. i personally think it would
sound incredible on 1)dave's chet 2)a nice grand piano.

What are the lyrics to YEM?

but what if life really _is_ peachy...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Thu Oct 13 15:37:23 1994

bringing up phish, as i often do, there's got to be a better way
to lyrically say "david bowie."

i think "life is so peachy" is the perfect set of lyrics for that
song because of the fact that the song is not about peachy lives.
it's about city life. it's about how hard it is, and it's about
how easy dave suddenly finds it being up on stage (but maybe i'm
just putting words in his mouth).

i think that spotlight is intended to be a very cynical song,
probably towards richmond in particular, since dave has such strong
ties to it, and i think that the line fits it very well. i can
see dave, and thousands upon thousands upon thousands of other
people saying it with such an utter cynical disdain, that you know
there is an underlying meaning. personally, i think the song should
stay the way it is, but i'll wait and see. hopefully it will evolve
like drive in, drive out and rhyme and reason did, as opposed to the

"mushrooming" fans? ha. ha ha. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Thu Oct 13 15:43:28 1994

just a (picky, very picky) note to say that dave is not a lead guitarist,
he's a rhythm guitarist. _however_, he is a much better rhythm guitarist
than a helluva lot of lead guitarists claim to be. there are important
differences b/w the two, and i have a feeling that even a guitar technical
genius might have to think for a coupla moments before figuring out some
of dave's tunes. particularly osw intro, #34, and rhyme and reason.

dave's sound works with carter and stefan to shape the music. if there
is a "lead" instrument in this band, it's definitely leroi. and i'd
agree, although leroi can really rip some solos out of his ass, sometimes
they sound like they should've been left there.

and now for true flamebait material (let's see how many firefighting fish
i catch with this one): $1.99 romances qualifies as one of the worst
peices of music i've ever heard in my life.

hello

Kyle.K.Langschwager@um.cc.umich.edu Thu Oct 13 17:08:09 1994

This is actually the 6 or 7th letter I have written, I'm not sure where the
first ones went. I tried to send them to the minarets address but I think
alot of them went tospecific people. Well anyways, hello. I thought the
message about "Could I have beens....." was really nice. Although there are
a couple more eg. Could I have been too much money for my own good. Also, I'm
curious if anyone knows about how many times Dave has talked about, "Some
people...." before he sings recently. In Nantucket, everytime he played it he
said something fascinating like, "Some people like to make love, some like to
fuck all night long." Maybe it's a new trend in Recently. If anyone else has
heard him say, "some people...."(he does it like Could I have been..) tell
me. Also, on the third night he played, he did a little neon lights
precourse too Recently too. Ya know "the neon lights are bright on broadway."
A couple more things, has anyone else out there seen the shows in Nantucket.
I'd love to talk about them. Incredible (3 nights). The last show I saw was
in Jones Beach, I don't really have a comment on that one (1st of two nights).
It just didn't really seem right, with such a big amphitheatre and such a
small crowd. Who knowes, maybe it's such a weird thing not seeing him at
small bars. I can't wait to see him in Chicago, it's not such a bad drive
from Ann Arbor/University of Michigan. Tickets are only $7.00. If anyone
is coming up for the Ann Arbor show, get in touch with me, I know that it's
sold out but that's o.k. If ya have tickets, I'll see you there. It seems
a very big Michigan State Crowd will be there. It's 19+, holds about 250 people
I saw it last year and have the bootleg, very good recording. Speaking of
bootlegs. If anyone is extremely interested, I'd love to trade, I have about
a dozen and a half. I guess that's about eighteen. I have a couple of
Angel from Montgomery legs and one Redemption Song. But, I'm still trying
to find Tangerine and Exodus (he plays those right?)
Oh yea, is anyone as interested as I am in what Dave says in between songs, if
you are, tell a bunch of funny shit he say's. I'll start out by saying, "there
are a million things to eat in the world that are not cheese"Nantucket,MA
October 2nd,94. O.K. if you want to write me directly, write ....--
kyle.k.langschwager@um.cc.umich.edu (I think) If that doesn't work, write on
the network.
P.S.Does anyone else have fucked up versions of say goodbye and rhyme and
reason like me? He seems to always change say goodbye. And two of the
early rhyme and reason's are totally different, they barely sound like it--
he never says, "Six feet under ground."

Oh yea, is anyone as interested as I am in what Dave says in between songs, if
you are, tell a bunch of funny shit he say's. I'll start out by saying, "there
are a million things to eat in the world that are not cheese"Nantucket,MA

I'm so glad someone finally brought this up!(or maybe I just never heard
it before?) I am preasantly arranging a deal to have Dave perform as a
stand-up comic on the side.......not really. But I do love those
humorous tidbits thrown in. Check out the August Birchmere show in
particular(even Tim was laughing hard.) Here are a few of my favorites.

WAREHOUSE

campb_c@cs.odu.edu Thu Oct 13 21:04:17 1994

Okay y'all...here it is...

I'm ready to start recieving 1991 setlists. I have most of 94 done and
I'm gonna start at the begining and work my way forward.
Anyone with 1991 tapes...send me the setlist, preferably in the

3/19/93 Floodzone, Richmond VA

okay...whenever possible indicate a segue with the - (double arrow).
and a - (single arrow) to indicate a slight pause (i.e. No talk, just
a brief pause and BAM! into the next song. Like a Two Step-Whatever song
and use a comma between the rest.

I'm confusing myself...

And to help us to further identify mislabled tapes and bring smiles to
our faces, I'm going to include Davetalk after each setlist, wherever
possible. So please try to include some sample, funny, trippy Davetalk
from each show that you transcribe. If there's a bunch (and there
usually is..) just send as much as you feel like sending, I'll pick
some of the best stuff and stick it in there. Also send any audiance
yells that are hilarious (for example, I have one show where some guy
and girl keep yelling for Darkstar...)

In this first draft, size won't be a problem. I'll leave it up to the
next keeper of the warehouse as to wheather they want to keep this
feature.

okay...so Any 1991 lists..send 'em my way now...

I'll probably be ready for 1992 next week...I don't have much 91 and I
don't know anyone who does. Hopefully we can fill in these spaces with
time and help from Jeff and Stirling.

peace and kind coffee,
Blake

p.s. I have a wicked cold and I just did shots of some gross tasting
herbal remedy that will probably make me trip, so if this makes NO
sense whatsoever, just ask me to explain.

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Thu Oct 13 21:09:01 1994

Interested in everyone's thoughts...

Don't get me wrong, I love the new CD. "Best" has always been my favorite and
it sounds great here. But the pacing on "Ants" and "Satellite" just don't
seem right.

this much i agree on. best is far and away the best tune on the cd, and ants
and satellite were a waste of everyone's time (except, perhaps, for a self-
indulging steve lillywhite).

far down in the mix."

I think John Alagia (producer - "R2T") knows this band well and can get the
most out of them. I guess you've got to use an established producer on your
major label debut, but I'd like to see John get involved again.

For those of you who are newcomers to the band through "UTTAD", I highly
recommend "R2T." It captures the essence of the band that perhaps we may
never hear again.

and say that i think you are way off base. (whoa, harsh words, rick's
breakin' out the propane....)

i think we _all_ know the band. everyone from john alagia on down knows
the band _too_ well for that matter, and we've always liked what we hear.
then along comes this steve lillywhite character and fucks _everything_ up.

but listen carefully to the album...is boyd mixed to far down, or is he
just mixed differently then we're used to? in my opinion, he's not even
playing the same style. he's exploring, and so is the band. what happened
to dave's chet atkins? he's definitely not playing it on uttad, and if he
is, he's got his signal turned _way_ down (once this comment gets flamed
i'll justify it, but i don't want this post getting too long). and where
did leroi suddenly pull a flute out of his ass from? granted, we all knew
that was coming, but still, why now. don't limit the band. if they had
put out another r2t, i'd have been _really_ pissed, dropped the lyrics
and faq, unsubscribed, and started chanting "the damn dave matthews band
is just another athens (you get my point) sell out." but they didn't.
they put out something new that they've never tried before. and they worked
with someone new (lillywhite) on something they've never tried before. all
the people bitching (including myself) about the lack of new songs have
got to think about all this.

oppurtunity for them as a group to explore corners they haven't seen
before. if dave can see three corners from the one he's stuck in, why
hold him to that corner? give him a chance to move out and see what else
is there. it seems to me that if dave had wanted to choose john again,
he could've. but he chose steve lillywhite (who dave probably holds in
absolute awe for having worked with peter gabriel), and he went ahead with
the cd the way it is. we all know for a fact that he thinks jimi thing is
"killer," and personally, i think it's one of the weaker songs on the cd.

and at this point, after multiple listenings of said cd, i think it's a great
cd. it has it's flaws, but it's their first studio release. i can't think
of very many cd's i can listen to all the way through without finding flaws.
(perhaps disentigration....no, not with love song on it...)
and after seeing this past weeks setlist, i've made the conclusion that they
may be headed for a happy comprimise of the phish direction and the rem
direction.

tell me, who's done _that_ before? personally, i think we're still looking at
one of the most original, innovative, provocative bands of the 1990's, and
we'll continue to see them create, innovate, and provoke for some time
to come.

 Anyone got anymore?

my favorite of all time from 12/1/93...

Dave comes out solo to play a few songs and while he's tuning up, he
tells a story about how they played some of the album on the radio that
night and the dj let people call in and give opinions on it. Dave goes
on to say that the best response was [in Dave's best redneck voice,
you've all heard it] "Sounds like dogs fornicating!"
and then he goes on to talk about seeing poodles do it in a dog box and
other stuff...

throughout the night, between almost every song, he repeats this famous
phrase.

after What Would You Say...RIGHT after the final line he says [in his
hillbilly voice] "I'd say it sounds like dogs fornicating!"

you've got to hear it. Remember how funny that was Emily? I still
crack up when I hear it...

Good show too...Jimi Thing was sick...

peace and spoons,
Blake

DMB at Pearl Street, Northampton

rbyerly@moose.uvm.edu Thu Oct 13 22:12:26 1994

I caught the Wednesday DMB show in Northampton Mass and overall it
was incredible. My one reservation was the crowd. They were mostly
interested in hearing a plug for the new album. The worst part was
after an encore of an incredible Back You Up and Watchtower the crowd
began to chant Satellite as my meager voice yelled SPOTLIGHT!!
SPOTLIGHT!!! I know..I know...how foolish. It's just that screaming
for Ants Marching, Satellite etc. gets old especially when you
consider DMB only has around 40 songs and their setlists for the most
part are pretty uniform. Jimi Thing was an incredible jam!!! Ten
minutes or so I think. Not to mention Say Goodbye and their new song
Get In Line-great tune but I'll have to listen to it more to get down
the lyrics. CRY FREEDOM stole the show...it chilled out the
more vocal drunks!!! All in all I was impressed with the setlist.
The first few songs were amazing even though it seems like Seek Up is
the eternal first song of every new show. The expression on Dave's
face during Seek Up was classic- as he sang "look at me in my fancy
car and my bank account" he had an evil grin that caught my eye. If
anyone knows the setlist for this show and the Montreal show it would
be cool to post 'em. If anyone taped either of these shows or knows
someone who did I would love to set up a trade. The Northampton
show ended on a good note as I was talking to Dave after the show
and asked him if he wanted to smoke some Vermont kind and he leaned
over and said, "I'm so high right now. You couldn't get me any
higher even if you begged me!" Talk to you later. Rick Byerly

completely spontaneous. huge SIGH.

Also, from where is Fenton?? I've got some tape with Boyd and dave joking

Yeah, I've been bothered by that. Jimi kinda stinks, at least compared to
live. For sure at least the version on the album isn't great (and don't
get me wrong-- I like Tim as much as the next guy); I think Dave is way
off base on that.

Christ, the "I once had a girl..." intro has been done in just
about every dave song in the past 2 1/2 years. Ive seen him do
it in Back You Up, LOver, Recently, Pay For..., So Much TO Say,
and I cant remember what else. He proceeds with "she showed me
her room...norweigian wood."

Hate to spoil your fun, but its not that someone's taken OUR
advice, it's just that Dave's finally getting around to doing the
stuff he used to a long time ago.

As for the "fucked up" versions of Rhyme, Minarets, Seek Up, Say
Goodbye, Warehouse, Jimi THing, etc, you must remember that the
lyrics to these songs changed practically weekly, and it was only
with the release of these songs on cd's that the lyrics to them
actually finally became set in stone, much to my disappointment.

Blood of Our Children-Xmas Song
Step Into The Light-Lie In Our Graves (yes this was at one
point the recognized title)

Dangerous Hours-Desperate Hours-Dangerousours-Help Myself

and

Everybody Happy-Typical Situation (this is before the verses
were written, just the chorus was. Ive got an awesome version
of this where there's just a sax solo during the verse, and then
Dave sings the chorus "everybody happy, everybody free..." and
then more sax)

Let us also not forget the days when Dave would sing the chorus
to Tripping Billies as "Eat drink and be merry for tomorrow
we die, eat, drink and be merry AND TODAY WE'LL GET HIGH...cuz
we're tripping billies..."

As for 91 tapes, all the shit Ive got from 91 is all filler on
other tapes, although most of ]it has a date, and that which
does I am 100% positive that its correct in dating. let me know
if you want what I have.

Wade

(longs for the pre-dancing nancies where carter is playing a jazz
beat during the chorus, and Dave is singing about "what were you
ever talking with???")

O.K. I need some help on a set that I'm pretty sure is all one show. But,
it was the first leg I ever got so it's pretty old. It has the date
5/11/93 on it, but, with all of the old songs on it and Shannon Worrell
singing on Angel from Montgomery. It has to be real old. Here's a list
True Reflections
Dangerous Hours
Christmas Song
Halloween
The song that Jane Likes
Redemption Song
Satellite
Lover Lay Down
People,People
Angel from Montgomery (kinda like the Charlottesville Anthem)
Granny
Warehouse
Ants Marching
Typical Situation
Dancing Nancies
Two Step
a show from Chi Phi in Athens,Ga that I have no clue what the date is,
"yo folks, how about givin' it up for Dave Matthews one time.
Anyways, I once knew the date for a Charlotte show, but I lost that too.
Actually, it got stolen along with about 8 other legs. To tell you the
truth it was my own fault. That's what I get for visiting my girlfriend
and leaving my door unlocked at an open party. Stupid!! O.K. The only
other show that I don't have a date for is a richmond show-flood zone.
For a clue on when it was, prior to say goodbye he says, "I still have
no words or no title but I am gonna play it anyway." Hopefully some
of those quotes will spark some memmory.I don't know if I am anal or what,
but I get really pissed off about not having the exact set list, or dates.
Hopefully domeone who has some time out there will look back, or remember,
these shows and help me. Greatly appreciated,

I am off to see DMB/RR in Baton Rouge(Sunday, Varsity Theatre) this afternoon
- 1200 miles away! Call me crazy but I have a 4 day weekend and it is about
time for me to see a full length DMB show (not 45 minutes of the Horde
Festival). Anyone else going to be down there? I have never been to
Louisana so we are going to stay in N.O. on saturday night. I would love to
hear some helpful hints, etc. before I leave (around 4o'clock). Regardless
of the show, It will be good in my eyes, however do you think the show will
be "run of the mill" since it is so far away from Virginia home? (Not that
run of the mill is bad or anything).

is my time to SEE them. Sorry for the yelling, and jumping up and down.

BTW, when was the last time they played Blue Water Babboon Farm? That would
be a beaut! Minarets BWBF Typical Situation (10/26)!
