Dave Matthews Promo Ad

jpederso@d.umn.edu Wed Sep 21 23:09:46 1994

This morning I went a bee boppin down to the store to see if by any
stretch of my wild imagination they had the new DMB CD. I live in
Duluth, Minnesota, hardly the hot spot for music. Only by pure chance
did my friend spot r2t at a Best Buy, lodged in the Ian Matthews
section. Well, go to this store to see if they would get the new one and
when. When I got to the counter I saw 2 DMB sticker and 2 brouchers! I
just about shit! Has anyone else seen this broucher about the band? It
says "The band people are talking about." on the cover and is a big b/w
close up of Dave's face. It's 6 pages long and has pictures of all the
band members inside (it looks like they may have computer scanned the
inside cover pictures of r2t). Along with the pictures are quotes from
varoius papers and people about how cool the band is, then on the last
page it gives a bio about how the band got together and what they are
like etc. It tells about the other CD's and the upcoming one due out
soon. If there is enough demand I can type out to the net exactly what
the pages say. I was just wondering if this was something that others
have seen or not. Let me know what you all think, it's pretty cool!

By the way, I didn't find the new CD, nor had anyone workind there ever
heard of the band. I'll just have to wait. Hopefully I can find it
soon! It will be mine.

re: when is X playing here?

bmking@mail.wm.edu Thu Sep 22 00:19:11 1994

I have a suggestion for the list admins.. lately, there have been an awful
lot of requests here and there and everywhere to the effect of 'when is
dmb/bt/whomever playing near me?'. I assume these mainly come from more-or-
less newcomers, who either don't have the right info at their feet and are a
bit too new (or lazy) to be able to look it up for themselves.

I think that along with the introductory message to new subscribers, a recent
copy of the upcoming dates file should be included too, if not already.

Also, I think this was brought up before the summer, and this has happened
recently on the bt net with their new album, & I'm sure it will on dmb soon,
but is anyone sending letters to the people who are a bit mis-informed about
the nets? (ie - Hey guys, I love your new album. Please put me on your
mailing list as... and when are you coming to New Zealand??) It would be
nice to nicely tell these people (& the ones who try to subscribe to the main
list) what the real story is...

these nets are some of the most beautiful things to cross this highway.

I think that along with the introductory message to new subscribers, a recent
copy of the upcoming dates file should be included too, if not already.

good idea, however, it would require continually updating the welcome
message everytime a new date was added...rather what i've been doing is
sending all the tour dates to anyone who poses such a question.

Also, I think this was brought up before the summer, and this has happened
recently on the bt net with their new album, & I'm sure it will on dmb soon,
but is anyone sending letters to the people who are a bit mis-informed about

i try to take care of some of these but i don't always have the time,
energy or patience to inform everyone...hopefully the welcome message and
FAQ are doing their jobs....

Cheese Music Survey

WIFOY@DAVIDSON.EDU Thu Sep 22 13:00:03 1994

As many of you know who get the BT letters, there has been a topic on music
to cheese by. Best Part was nominated by some BT fans. I want to do a
survey for a week to see what is in fact the best cheese music. Send me
PERSONAL email with your fav's rated on 1-10 where 1 is "bad idea" and 10
can be a "home run" shall we say... and I'll compile the relative
probabilities of an enjoyable cheese with given music. I'll run this for
about a week after which I'll send in a compiled list to the samples,
minarets, bt, and horde lists.

Hope you have fun, and I'm ready.

this stuff. Also, "Mr. Chairman, I move that any and all Harry Connick, Jr.
be removed from consideration" Just kidding, this can be anything you like
to cheese to. I didn't say hook up to, whatever that means in colloquial
What tugs at the heart strings?

blades of 50 men/ His heart and soul would drive them back/ for the chance to
see Roxanne's eyes light up the sky again." from Sweet Pain on_Travelers &
Thieves_.

Or

Best Part, or others.

PERSONAL EMAIL ONLY

Look forward to reading your responses. And any band is fair game.

Do me a favor if you will and mark your replies in the subject header somehow
indicating that this is a repsonse to the survey. thanks peace, and may the

3.5 Points and an unusual amount of cynicism

NebuIous@aol.com Thu Sep 22 19:49:52 1994

Point 1:

Like a bad disease, it appears another few CDs are coming out on Dave
Matthews Typical Tuesday (ugh)... the most notable of which would be God
Street Wine, a band I personally can not stand ('hey, lets sing about *BABES*
and play boring songs underneath!'), but who are a gosh-darn clove-smokin
tree-huggin hippie tye-die-up-the-ass band and I'm sure there are at least 3
or 4 (or 20?) crossover fans out there who this interests. Oh, wait, you
probably already knew. Oh well.

Point 2:

Someone posted on Phish.net about a pretty cool record store up here in NYC
called Venus Records on the
formerly-cool-but-now-just-corporate-hell-wanna-be-punk-place-replete-with-its
-own-Gap St. Marks Place that had and was selling the new cd.
Well, after a few moments of happiness I decided, darn it, who cares, the CD
is coming out on Tuesday. This is interesting because the guy posting was
talking about how he got the new GSW disc (as prev. stated coming out the
27th too), and my friend got the new BT album a week before it came out at
the same store.

Point 3:

Go out and get the new Liz Phair CD.

Oh, and keep the transcriptions coming. The next mailing will have some new
ones, but we aren't all the way there yet (major hints thrown at the knight
in shining beer).

UTTAD Update (9/23/94 article)

jeg5s@faraday.clas.virginia.edu Fri Sep 23 13:05:24 1994

Today's Marquee (an insert in Charlottesville, VA's Daily
Progress, referred to locally as The Regress) has dave singing
and playing on front, and an article (p3 contd on p19) called
"Dave Matthews Band is no longer `Dreaming'." Author = Mary Alice
Blackwell. (is she on this net?)

I'll transcribe it this evening (have to go teach a class now),

The launch party will be at Crossroads _and_ Max (this is on
recent flyers as well)
Tickets for the Crossroads portion sold out in four hours.
Lauch party attendees will receive the CD insert at the door to
have signed and will get the actual CD at midnight (four
locations).
Includes discussions with Boyd and Dave.
Calls _Remember Two Things_ "RTT" instead of "R2T" :(
RTT/R2T/whatever has sold over 100,000 copies.
From Good Homes will open the amphitheatre show.
Regarding first show (at Eastern Standard in 1991), Dave says,
"The guy who had the idea for us to play there got the shaft."
Anyone know who that was, or how it was that he got shafted?
(Pete? someone else?)
UTTAD produced by Steve Lillywhite, who produced albums for U2
and Peter Gabriel.
Only repeats from R2T are Satellite and Ants, and they're studio
versions (vs. R2T's live versions.)
Also incudes BOWA and 34.
Limited tickets for Lauch Party still available; call Plan 9 at
(804) 979-9999 or the band's management's ticket phone charge
number, 1-800-594-TIXX.
For info on amphitheatre show, call 594-8499.

RR/DMB dates

klong@nysernet.ORG Fri Sep 23 13:14:58 1994

Are Rusted Root and DMB touring in November together? Is there an
updated list of dates available? I saw a Rusted Root schedule that
listed some November dates and it indicated they would be with RR.
I'm particularly interested in the listings for Missouri during
that time frame (if there are any).

faqs, lyrics, and random comments...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Fri Sep 23 14:39:14 1994

first of all, to anyone and everyone on the original lyrics mailing list,
i lied. there will be one more mailing, as the lyrics file has metamorphosed
into something beautiful and flittery (like a butterfly;). actually,
i've just split it up into 3 parts, including the lyrics to uttad, as
published. expect to see it on monday, just in time to go pick up the
cd. this is also going to people who have recently requested the file.

second of all, the faq is currently in bad shape, so if your waiting for
that as well, be patient. i'm trying to make it look like remember two
things isn't due out in about a month (which is the way it's been
reading for quite some time). problem being is that i have two jobs,
15 hours of classes, and i'm a manager at the campus station, so in
an effort to free up some more space in my brain, i deleted the term
"free-time" from my vocabulary so that i wouldn't have to worry about
it.

third of all, on that tape where drive in, drive out was debuted, dave
actually calls it 'smelly shoes.' that's one of those shows that could
readily be id'd by dave talk if we got a setlist file going.

that's all.

best of 94 on tape (at least the shows I've been to)

campb_c@cs.odu.edu Fri Sep 23 15:51:42 1994

In preparing the setlist file and listening to the 94 tapes, I decided to
compile this list in hopes of creating some discusion on here. I also
thought that with school having just started again, alot of newbies on
here may not have ANY idea what some of the hot recent shows are. So
here goes...

I'm only listing shows I was at and taped myself...but by all means,
review some of your own.

2/10/94 Ziggys Winston-Salem NC I,II

kinda like a small Floodzone with cooler people. First and Second set
open up with Seek Up and Jimi the respectivly. 'nuff said...

2/22/94 TRAX Charlotesville VA II

sets of the year. Halloween was positively FRIGHTNING...

2/24/94 Floodzone Richmond VA II

people were outside begging for tickets...I actually saw a couple of
people crying. Good jams.

2/25/95 Sweetbrier College, Lynchburg VA I,II

that this was a girls school made this an enjoyable show. Second set
rocked. Pay For What You Get, So Much to Say, EXODUS!!! Did I mention
$1 16 oz. beers? Get this one for the strange noises that Dave makes
between songs...they scare my cat. LITTLE BABY!

2/26/94 The Bayou, Washington DC II

shortest. awesome jams in the second set though. Lie in our Graves is
of particular interest...leroi and carter jam around groovily...

4/20/94 Virginia Horse Center, Lexinton VA Phish set II

Somewhere Over the Rainbow during Phish's set was inspired. It brought
back good memories of this night when I saw Phish jam it again this
summer in Maine.

4/21/94 LJVM Colisium, Winston-Salem NC Phish encore

dropped...get this set just for the drum duet between Jon Fishman and
Carter.

4/24/94 Van Ripers Music Festival, Nelson Co. VA I

Bruce (his last show with ARU) and it made their set interesting.

4/26/94 Towne Point Park, Norfolk VA I,II

Awesome Tripping Billies (don't catch me saying that too often...)

8/13/94 Strawberry Banks, Hampton VA I,II

Around in the first set and Nature-Recently (with both the some people
intro and pretty pretty girl outro) in the second made this show a
winner. And they didn't do Ants!!! Say Goodbye with Leroi on flute...

8/24/94 Classic Ampitheater, Richmond VA one set

Jimi I've seen this year. Boyd plays some Baboon Farm psychedelic
delay shit that blew me away.

well..that's it. I would have added the Dave and Tim shows at the
Birchmere if they had allowed taping. Tapes of these shows do exist,
although I believe that the one in circulation is an audiance.

feel free to phlame me personally and please add those shows that you
feel are hot.

taking a drink, sitting back and relaxing, and smoking my mind (hell,
it's Friday!)

Ugh, what a crapo subject. But it says it all.

I'd have to say I like it. I'm not in love with it, but I wasn't in love
with the six song demo (thank you Ben #2) at first either. There are a few
changes to songs, some for the worse. I won't get into them, especially
since I know you crazy fuckers in Virginia will have so much to say (gawd i
kill myself with those) about YOUR band (no, he can't be my band too, hmm?

Popper), Satellite, Rhyme & Reason, Typical Situation, Dancing Nancies,
Ants Marching, Lover Lay Down, Jimithing, Warehouse, Pay For What You
Get, #34

speaking of wwys with popper, does popper have his own solo along with
everyone else in the song? (for those non-initiated bt'ers, wwys is like
crashburn.. each member solos, only it's the same solo more or less)

i think the two bands should combine wwys and crashburn.. that would be an
incredible jam. that'd be at least 7 different instruments doing the same
solo. wicked stuff, man.

The CD WWYS is totally deranged... the song is MUCH shorter (I think it's
3:50 maybe that's a different song). Anyway, the basic structure for the
verse/chorus is the same, but once it gets to solos they cut the jam WAY off
(dave doesn't even sing those impossible to understand semi-lyrics) and
basically have a little sax jam, then a 16 bar or thereabouts Popper solo.

Overall not a superb use of his talents, but once you're used to the new
'structure' (hopefully they'll only use it for the CD and still jam live)
it's actually a bit better as far as studio concerns go...

odds and ends of Spin Doctors, Pearl Jam, Living Colour, the authority,

U. Penn DMB Fans

kartzman@sas.upenn.edu Sun Sep 25 14:20:34 1994

from the Philadelphia area.

			Penn Tapers Alliance

Do you listen to Phish? The Dead? Dave Matthews Band? The Allman Brothers
Band? The Hatters? Widespread Panic? Big Head Todd? Well, read on.

I'm writing to inform you that the first meeting of the Penn
Tapers/Traders Alliance will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 9pm in
the Smith-Penniman Room on the second floor of Houston Hall.

I'm sending this letter to you because I either know you, or know you
listen to good music. It's about time that all the people with good
tapes on this campus got together to meet and trade. I hope you can make
it on Wed- it won't take up too much of your time. Our inaugural meeting
will be an organizational session, and we'll find out what people
have, what people want, and possibly exchange some tapelists, so bring a
copy of yours if you've got one. When the group gets going in full swing,
we'll also hope to be ordering blank tapes in bulk, undercutting the
prices of Terrapin Tapes, the Advantage Co., and your favorite music store.
We're also going to make people aware of the shows coming to town, and
someone may even have an extra for you.

We are trying to encourage trading and discourage grovelling, but anyone
who is into the music is welcome to show up. We don't guarantee
anything, and if you don't want everyone to have a copy of your list, you
don't have to give it out. We just think this is a worthwhile forum to
get those tapes you might have been looking for for a long time.

Please forward this to anyone you know who might be interested in
coming. If you have any questions, you can email me at the address
below, or call me at 417-5794, or you can contact Jeremy Zweig at
jzweig@sas or call him at 243-0754. Hope to see you on Wednesday. Enjoy
 your weekend.

looking back, and looking forward

btanen@netspace.students.brown.edu Sun Sep 25 14:23:15 1994

Hi everyone.

I'm in a kind of pensive mood today about the Dave Matthews Band. Monday,
September 26, 1994 is the last day of an era for the band and all its
fans, it seems to me, and thus it's also a time for reflection and
anticipation.

Now I know some of you folks in the Virginia area have been following the
band for considerably longer than I have. And perhaps, you all are
feeling even more strange about the imminent release of the band's major
label debut than I am.

I hope everyone has a good day on Monday. Stop whatever you're doing at
11 pm, go out to your local record store, and buy the album. I'm sure
some of you will be at the Dave and friends show. If you're not at the
show or in the Southern or Western Virginia area, you're probably going to
have to fight
off all the Big Head Todd, God Street Wine, and REM fans in order to even
get a copy of Under The Table And Dreaming tomorrow night. It'll be a
small price to pay though, because all around the country, and maybe even
in some other countries too, other fans of the band will be going through
exactly the same things-- Stipe-heads in the line in front of the store,
store clerks who give you a weird look when you ask for the album, and so
on. We're all going to be out there doing it too.

Well, I've said my fill. Enjoy (especially 'Best'-- it's intense!).

Bye for now,

Ben

P.S.: If anyone else is going to be at Tower Records Cambridge MA, drop
me some mail and we can meet up.

actually calls it 'smelly shoes.' that's one of those shows that could
readily be id'd by dave talk if we got a setlist file going.

A SHOW A LONG TIME AGO

wmc8s@darwin.clas.virginia.edu Mon Sep 26 00:14:10 1994

Greetings all, this is a very absurd request and I know it...

I am looking for a show. It was December of 1992 at the
Bayou in Washington DC. It was right around Christmas, i think
right after it. The reason I am looking for this show is that
I'm mentioned in it--Dave says right before his last song (Blood
of Our Children--Xmas song) "Wade gave me a Christmas card tody,
so this goes out to him."

I would LOVE to get a copy of this show. This is the second set
(I grabbed the setlist that night)
Two Step, Desperate Hours, Satellite, Dancing Nancies, Lover Lay
Down, Granny, Spotlight, Jane, Minarets, Blue Water, What Would
You Say, Blood.

I would appreciate it if anyone would let me know about this, but
like I said, it's an absurd request and I know it...

UTTAD

well even up here in beautiful vermont with the leaves in peak foliage i
heard on the radio, "And on September 27th be the first to own REM's new
album, 'Monster.' Also check out Big Head Todd's new album due out on
the same date along with the Dave Matthews Band new release, 'Under the
Table and Dream.'

surprising that Dave Matthews has promotion even up here in Burlington,
VT were they've only played once.

not surprising that they mangled the title.....

tape request

SLATCHERR@urvax.urich.edu Mon Sep 26 12:47:29 1994

question- does anyone have a decent copy of the show this past summer at
the Bottle and Cork in Dewey Beach, De. ? It was a great show at a very
fun venue- kind of reminiscent of Dave's days back at the flood zone in
Richmond- no advance tickets needed, small place, etc.

also, if anyone has any DMB tapes from 1991 or 92 (esp. W/ the maker),
i will gladly be willing to put up a fair trade- I have about 15 hours
of dave on tape. please e-mail me personally if you want to respond to
this request.

thanks,

American Music?

BWhitman@aol.com Mon Sep 26 14:22:53 1994

I seem to remember at HORDE a month ago a tune called 'American Music' (if my
lawn seat hearing wasn't that bad) - anyone hear of it - he said it was going
to be on the new album. It was a tune I'd never heard before. Anyone else go
to GSAC Horde and hear that tune? Am I that far off?

Philly TLA x-tras?

droush@sas.upenn.edu Mon Sep 26 18:46:50 1994

Hey there all-

The DMB show @ the TLA, October 1, is sold out. Does anyone have a few
extras? I'm looking for three, but if you have _any_, I'm interested. I
live in Philly and will be able to meet you before the show. Have 125 HQ
hours of Phish/Dead/DMB to sweeten the deal as well....

I'll pay face, only, but with a couple of tapes(your choice) thrown in as
thanks.

More than one

axvann@minerva.cis.yale.edu Mon Sep 26 19:33:33 1994

Continuing in my somewhat annoying habit of discussing more than one
thing in a post...

1. Could everyone trading tapes with me please drop me a line to inform
me about their progress?

2. In case you southerners don't understand the scope of what's going on
with DMB promotion, our local record store, Cutler's, has eight full
sized posters up advertising UTTAD. They also have a listening station
reserved for it as of tomorrow- they have about ten stations, usually
reserved for the ten biggest releases of the last two months. Across one
of the posters is a sign informing shoppers that they can catch the DMB
at Toad's Place down the street on Oct. 3 !!! (exclamation theirs). I'm a
little frightened by the whole thing.

3. How do you all feel about this? Personally, I was pretty excited for a
while. Finally, the public gets a chance to hear a phenomenal band, and
all my friends won't think I'm crazy for talking about some unknown band
like they've thought for the past year and a half. Now, however, I'm
having some reservations, brought about mostly by the nightmarish ticket
sales for the Phish Halloween show- any other NE types deal with this as
well? Is this going to happen to my favorite band? Maybe I'm being
selfish- I don't know.

4. Can you Virginia people please do something about this Ollie North
thing? :)

Sorry for that last bit. Couldn't help it.

Dave Merchandise

Well, while browsing the lovely merchandise catalog that came with UTTAD,
I discovered a rare item that I found to be quite cool, a DAVE screen
saver and sound byte disc!!!!! Whata deal for $10....obviously someone in
merchandising is aware of us geeks here on the internet. Just kida blew
my mind and I thought I'd toss in my 2 cents....Good luck to all at the
stroke of midnight, I was fortunate enough to get it a few hours early...

Popularity, Halloween (no, not the dave one), etc.

SPICE@DICKINSON.EDU Mon Sep 26 22:45:05 1994

yeah, i've always tried to be up for the band and positive and supportive and
i'll continue to be but i couldn't get tickets for phish's halloween show,
either, and well... frankly, i'm pretty bitter about the whole thing for both
bands.

dave matthews will be huge. watch and, by the end of the year, i'd be really
surprised if they didn't have the album on the billboard charts. next spring,
mtv unplugged. by next fall, cover of rolling stone. you think i'm kidding?
hahaha. actually, i'm not. i think it'll happen. the only reason why it
hasn't happened *that* big to phish is because they're still a bit too weird
and there's still a lot of anti-phish sentiment out there (god knows why or
where it came from) so skeptical people haven't caught on. dave matthews is
more along the lines of edie brickell, paul simon, 10,000 maniacs, that type
of thing. they're more accessible, basically, and people will flock to them.
granted, it's all good quality music but certain things are starting to
bother me.

*) dave hasn't written anything new in a long, long time.

*) phish did not cover themselves with glory when they released hoist. it's
not a bad album, but it's the least impressive album they've ever released
(why are the songs so short? where are the solos? why does it contain "if i
could", that richard marx cover?) okay, phlame away but seriously, i've seen
a depressing side of popularity lately.

*) dave is not varying the setlists enough. this is a bad habit to get into.
i'd be really, really pissed if phish weren't still playing soooo well live.
dave is still good live but lacks the spontaneity and creativity he once had
(just look at the random stuff on old tapes).

i think one bad thing of popularity is that you sometimes get afraid to be as
creative and unique as you can be. this leads you to do things like cut down
songs so that they'll fit in nice little radio chunks (ugh) and cut out solo
sections (wwys, down with disease, julius, etc.). where did blue water go?
and boyd's wah-wah? and the delay section that was known once as the baboon
farm? things are just getting too normal, too mainstream, not true to the
things that originally pulled me towards the band.

comments? flame personally, if you're going to, please. i love phish & dmb -
- they're my 2 favorites. however, i like them enough to see their
respective faults, too. let's talk about this a bit more but try to be
analytical; no emotional "they sold out, they suck!" bits. WHY do they suck,
HOW have they sold out, WHAT don't you like about their new studio/live
stuff? constructive debates are productive.

take care,
reid

ps -- i'm from virginia and i can't explain the ollie thing. it's
depressing. much more depressing than what i'm depressed about with phish/
dmb, certainly...

hey whats up people....
its late.

hey coupl of personal things about the disk.....
disappointed about the lack of boyd brian mentioned.
i am pleased though with the way they used the studio.....they defintely feel
the room with stuff...boyd little background stuff (and i mean background) and
leroi doing that whole blues/jazz playalong kinda stuff.
i also feel in a yyear tops they will be HUGE. I think also that Stefan will be
looked to as a John Paul Jones jkinda bassist. he is great....people will be
able to play it but they will wonder where it came from....if you know what i
mean.....
thats all

Shh! Don't tell anyone about DMB.

btanen@netspace.students.brown.edu Tue Sep 27 08:49:33 1994

Hi. My name is Ben, and I'm selfish. I like going to relatively small
clubs and seeing live music. After the show, I like to personally thank
the musicians (sometimes they're just hanging around) for a good show.
Is this selfish of me? Yes, and frankly I hate going to Madison Square
Garden to see concerts-- that place is for NBA basketball.

All the sudden everyone seems to think that the Dave Matthews Band is
going to be a big popular success. You know what? You're right.
Congratulations on creating a monster.

"Me?," you say. "What did I do." You did exactly what you think you are
supposed to do. I did it too, for over a year. I told everyone I
thought would be interested, and a lot of people who weren't interested,
all about this band from Virginia and they're really cool and you should
listen to this tape or come with me to the concert blah blah blah. I
think I did this because I want other people to like what I like.

However, I have seen the error of my ways. I take some small partial
responsibility for the situation in which I will find myself next
weekend-- lots of drunk New Englanders clamoring to scream "BOYD!" all
night long at the Avalon. YUCK!

From now on, I will not hand things to people on a silver platter. I saw
this band because I went to see the Samples and there was this cool
opening band. Wow, they have a sax player and a violin player and they
did Dylan's Watchtower (they were way better than the Samples, too!).

Why am on a personal crusade to make myself miserable every time I go to
see a band I like?

I was as expected the only one at Tower buying the album. Free stickers.

Ants isn't TOO bad. Dave plays with the words by coming in earlier than
expected on "Take these . . ." Interesting. I'll hate the song again in
a day or so I'm sure.

Pay For and Typical were both nice to hear.

#34 is kind of uninspired in my opinion. Check the 3/7/93 version for a
masterpiece.

I do not like Jimi at all. They could do so much more.

------------------------------

I have class now.

Shh! Get off the soapbox for once y'all and enjoy the music for yourself.

Bye for now,

Ben

A Few Musings of my own

kadams@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Tue Sep 27 11:13:29 1994

Now is the time when everyone's going to start complaining about how DMB
will become big and untouchable and that we used to like when they played
every Tuesday at Trax and that time when they played at Kappa Sig in a
basement. Well, sorry everyone, but those old times may be over. Of
course we are to blame (although I don't think blame is the right word).
We all have to admit trying to get our less informed friends to listen to
a few hissy bootlegs three years ago, convincing them that, "They really
do have talent. No, really, the acoustics in Zollman's pavillion are
much better up front-you shouldn't have been outside drinkin' beer all
night!" Well, fame is good for some-it pays the bills. Look, we'd be
bummed if they fizzled out and some of us are bummed now. Me, I'd like
to think it's great what's happening to these guys. They made it.
A neat little tidbit of info (sorry Buford, I know you've heard this
before) is that among the group of '93 W&L grads, there were a handfull
of anti-Davers who were basically annoyed with all the DAVE DAVE DAVE
hype. In other words, they basically wouldn't give the music a try
because the rest of us liked it so much. Well, one friend of mine was a
long time Green Day fan (since skateboarding days of highschool I think)
and he and a friend got them to play at Zollman's pavillion in '93
(January I think). Granted, they aren't the usual Virginia music scene,
but there were a handfull of fans there (most a group of guys from
Baltimore that somehow heard about the show) and then a bunch of people
who had nothing better to do on a random Thursday night. It was fun
except for the beer cans chucked toward the stage and the fact that
Billie Joe (pink hair in full effect) and the boys o Green were afraid to
play their rendition of "Sweet Home Alabama" for fear of getting the crap
kicked out of them by ungrateful southerners. Anyway, these same really
nice guys that hung out in Lexington my sophomore year rocked
Lollapalooza and Woodstock this year. So here's my thoughtful musings of
two cool and totally different (to say the least) bands that played at
Zollman's in January of '93.

I don't contribute much to the net (I just read and listen to what my
housemate, the infamous Sir Buford has to say) so if this was kinda long,
just think of it as my contribution for all of last year. Some of us can
be happy or some of us can feel sold out in a big way. Well, have fun
and those of you in Charlottesville enjoy the show tonight. Oh, I'll
close with a neat little quote from that friend of mine who loves Green
Day. He was at the DMB Irving Plaza show this summer (lucky guy lives in
NY) and he wrote, "These guys are total rock stars now!" I wonder why he
was there? Reminiscing about his days at school in Virginia I guess (I
even think he has a Dave bootleg now). He he, now that I've stopped
hounding him, I think he's begginning to appreciate the DMB sound. After
all, he did see them play a whole bunch of times at Zollman's, Dave even
played at their senior party, but I think he was one those people outside
drinkin' beer.

CD Release/9/26 @ Trax

dee3s@uva.pcmail.virginia.edu Tue Sep 27 12:24:41 1994

Just gonna share my experiences last night at what is now
Crossroads but what turned out for me and my friend to be the
Max. Just as Ellis had warded with his post of that tidbit from
the Daily Progress the event wound up being split into the
Crossroads venue and Max which is a smaller, younger room next
door. So at 10:10 pm my friend and I became the first to be told
"UHhhhh, well we've run out of room so you can go in the Max now
and you'll see the same thing." Well the bottom line is that we
didn't. Some blues trio was playing and the rumor finally ran
around the room that Dave had played next door and wasn't going
to play here. Pretty pissed I was until a little before 11pm
Dave walked into the room unbeknownst to 98% of the people there
(which says something about the band's level of popularity or the
fans that were there). He went up to the bar to get a drink and
I had a chance to talk to him for a few minutes. Some Dave words
: They'll be touring through December then taking a month or so
break, maybe do some more shows and then get back in the studio
to hopefully release a new album in less than a year. He said
the way the chose songs for the album was just whatever they
happened to sit down and play in the studio first and there was
no real conscious decision to include or exclude anything.
Lastly he said that he HOPED that they would get to a second
single from the album and that it would be Jimi Thing which in
his own words is "killer" on the album. He then signed my cd
insert. He wrote some pretty random things on mine and my
friend's inserts and I'd be interested in hearing what he may
have wrote on anyone else's if they were there and got a
signature.

More babbling from me.....

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Tue Sep 27 16:48:52 1994

Whilst in Politics class today, I stumbled on a few thoughts about this
whole DMB getting big thing....and some opinions on UTTAD

1)UTTAD is great because it focuses on STUDIO work, ie there is plenty of
shit you can't do live in the studio and vice versa. I especially love
Tim's killer fills on guitar, the man rocks

2)I would have appreciated more Boyd, but then I thought about it, and I
don't think I would ever want a killer Blue Water solo made permanent by
a CD. Kinda like the Seek Up lyrics, which have now kinda stayed the same..

3)I had 4 Phish discs before I saw them, and was blown away the first
time I did by what I was told was an O.K. show (Richmond H.O.R.D.E.
summer 93). If Phish had put all its extended jams on disc, the concerts
would kinda be boring. Yes dave needs to spice it up a bit like the old
days, but I'm content with a very well studio done WWYS at 4 min with
cool things like Popper harminica and the other fill shit.

4)Also same kinda comparison with the Dead. Shakedown Street on disc os
around 4 min. In concert it can be 20 min.

Basically I'm saying if all CD's sounded like live shows, then we
wouldn't get cool studio shit and there would be no point in releasing a

Re: More babbling from me..... (from Chris, and now from Ben)

btanen@netspace.students.brown.edu Tue Sep 27 17:04:13 1994

4)Also same kinda comparison with the Dead. Shakedown Street on disc os
around 4 min. In concert it can be 20 min.

 |Chris "Boofy" Buford

Granted, this is quite correct, but what I qould counter with is the
unfortunate reality that Dave and company haven't been anywhere near as
adventurous as the Dead or Phish or whatever when it comes to live shows
of the last year or so. So, not only does the album contain a kind of
stock version of a song-- and this applies to lots of things, not just
WWYS of course-- but the live shows are getting more and more similar too.
As I asked Barry in private e-mail earlier today, where has the orignality
gone?

I think this all goes back to the essential point that we haven't heard a
new song in FAR too long.

On the other hand, when I took the disc out of the case last night at
about 12:45 and I looked at the picture of Dave and a kid whom I am
assuming is his nephew, with the dedication to the memory of Dave's
sister Anne, it all kind of hit home that maybe we should give this guy a
lot of credit for getting up and singing songs like Lie In Our Graves
night in and night out (I wish they did that one every night, by the way).

That is a really moving photograph, and on a level far removed from
whether they are playing Wetlands or Roseland you've GOT to feel
for him.

Bye for now,

Varied Setlists

jjthomps@teton.Mines.Colorado.EDU Tue Sep 27 18:19:19 1994

Just a few comments on this Christmas Day (except I was my own Santa)

about all these different songs on minarets. Then when I would see the
band, it seemed like Dave would always take the time to introduce songs
that weren't on R2T. Well, as luck would have it, I talked to him on the
weekend before they went to NY to record. I asked about certain songs that
I had heard of but never heard. He was kind of like apologetic about
sticking with similar setlists night after night - because he knew I just
know when you just get something special happening in a song, maybe the
audience doesn't even hear it, but it is faster or slower in a certain part
or someone else does a fill in a certain part, or a new groove happens, and
you just want to keep working on it..." (paraphrasing by me - run-on

some aspect (I wish they would have inclued Granny) But just think about
what they did include. What if they had included a bunch of "new" songs
and could only choose 3 or 4 "standards" to put on the record. Then a lot
more people would be dissapointed... The sound is very good, but the
dynamics will never compare to a live show - nor should they.

Okay, I'm done,
Take care everyone,
Jason T.

rem, dmb, priorities, and a slight bitch...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Tue Sep 27 18:24:56 1994

despite the complexity of that subject line, i only have two things
to say. first, upon picking up our campus newpaper and flipping through
the pages i found an add for our local independent record store and it's
midnight madness sale. they gave dave band billing over rem. hee-hee.

and secondly, what's with all the friggin groveling around here these
days? i really hate to bitch about it, because i'm sure one day i'm
going to be desparate for a hard to find tape, but something like three
posts in a row is a bit extreme. at least it's not as bad as spreadnet

comments on the studio and boyd....

RPPRISIN@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Tue Sep 27 20:12:00 1994

hey everybody....
forgot to include this in my earlier today post....
but i think the reason boyd is shut out a lot on the album is that in the
studio the band is very different. I think live they are a boyd dancing around
smiling making a fool of himself kinda band which makes their live shows
great..... in the studio they are a leroi and stefan master musicians kinda
band.... i think its like boofy (i think) said that the people who buy the cd
but haven't heard them live will go and be blown away......

thanks

p.s. even though rick doesn't like it i am going to ask one last time for bht

dave matthews will be huge. watch and, by the end of the year, i'd be
really
surprised if they didn't have the album on the billboard charts. next
spring,
mtv unplugged. by next fall, cover of rolling stone. you think i'm
kidding?

wait... MTV UNPLUGGED? How do you figure? Steffan breaks out the acoustic
bass? ;)

I know i know, it doesn't HAVE to be unplugged to be unplugged but it seems
so ridiculous to even call it that anymore. But then, I remember from a few
years ago that when Poison (remember them? too bad.) were on, the big hair
guitarist guy actually had an ELECTRIC. Now THAT is sad. Maybe seeing Dave
playing electric could be fun. Not forever like Dylan, but it could
certainly be interesting. Once.

Has anyone out there seen the After Dark DMB screen saver? Should I buy
it? Is it cool? The new REM album sucks, IMHO. I like UtTaD... it's fun.
Nice to hear such a well produced studio album. When I Woke by Rusted
Root sounds real nice for a studio album, too. I guess I could've used
more Boyd on this one, but oh well... that's their choice I guess... See
you at Toad's on Monday!

the buzz to get live tapes will still be there because nothing beats seeing

Dave at ND???

ddevito@copper.helios.nd.edu Wed Sep 28 01:04:54 1994

hey now,

I hope you all enjoyed the CD release show. It's too bad I'm stuck out
here in the Midwest (the weather is biting big time out here) and not
in Dave's "hometown" tonight. Anyways, I was wondering...anyone hear
anything about the rumored Halloween DMB show here at Notre Dame?
I've talked to some people here who say it's definitely going down,
but I have yet to hear any confirmation from those in the know on the net.

One part of the rumor I've heard that is that they're to play in the
ballroom here, which only holds @300 people to my knowledge. I know
that that's about the max # of people that would come see DMB out here
(we are THE musically conservative school), but I think it would kick

Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone on the net (Buford, Ellis, Clare?)
could confirm this vicious rumor and keep the suspense from killing me...

BTW, if anyone wants to ship me out a deck and some mics, I'll happily
plug into the board for you (if I can) or I'll make an audience recording.

Thanks for listening,
Dominic

Hello

seandev@beacon.regent.edu Wed Sep 28 01:05:27 1994

been following DMB for about a year and a half now and have been lucky
enough to catch about a dozen or so shows. I have only been able to
survive on Dave via the live show, R2T, Recently, and now UTTAD. I don't
any Dave Matthews bootlegs. I don't mean to be forward, but if any one
would be willing to make me copies of some shows I would be enternally
greatful. I really don't have anything to offer in return other than my
undying gratitude. I would pay for the tape and for postage.

What if anything is new on UTTAD. I know Best, What would you, and Pay
for what are older songes, and of course Ants, Dancing, Warehouse, and
Sattelite. Is there any new material on the new album? From reading
today's posts it seems like the anwser is no. If this is the case, then
what was the last new song Dave wrote.

Ampitheater Show

taocon@mail.wm.edu Wed Sep 28 01:43:34 1994

Woah! Just got back from the show. Entertaining as always. Was it just me
or did it seem so short? Noticably missing from the set list was the almost
standard Two Step into Ants Marching. A few of us walked away kinda miffed
at that one. But hey, it was $10. Plus, those sissy Charlottseville noise
ordanances put a choker on the set list too. Was kinda hoping John Popper
might have showed up for the kickoff concert. Eh, it was a long shot.

'Under the Table' is key. The speculation about what was gonna be put on
there is finally over. I've been trying to push it to all my uncultured
acquaintances, most of whom are from the midwest. Ants Marching has really
been changed on this disc. Almost sounds like a new song in some parts. It
would have been interesting to see if they had done it differently in
concert as well.

As for DMB getting huge, it would be nice to see the guys get some national
attention, but at the same time, it'd be nice to keep them on a smaller
scale for a little while longer. That way they can still be 'our' DMB
before MTV and the Top 40 radio stations kill the first single with
extensive airtime.

I'll be at the Avalon show in Boston on the 8th as well. Hope it's a bit
more involved than tonight. Later jackie.

DMB at SU

klong@nysernet.ORG Wed Sep 28 07:58:24 1994

I went into the Spectrum at the Student Center of Syracuse U here in
the 'Cuse to get my copy of UTTAD and saw an interesting flyer at the
cashier. Seems the SU student government is trying to get DMB to play
their auditorium which holds around 1600. There's a petition for folks
to sign if they would support such a concert. Tickets would be $8.

This is a huge step for the city of Syracuse. I'm not joking. The
one radio station here plays perhaps 1 "new" song an hour, with the
rest being "classics" such as REO Speedwagon and Bob Seegar. The "new"
songs are ones I heard about 6 months ago in DC. So, what is the point
of all this?

I'd really like to see DMB here in Syracuse because maybe it would open
up the music scene a little when people see that there is a population
that would support it. Right now, we get no bands at the small clubs.
They all go to Ithaca or Rochester-both are an hour or more away from
here. And if the clubs start bringing in the bands, maybe the radio
stations will play more of their music (I can only hope). It's probably
a chicken and egg sort of thing-have to have the radio play to get the
bands but it could be a step in the right direction. (Yes, Phish is
playing here in November and it's sold out-one more indication that
there are people here to support a music scene in this town. Don't
ask me about the Halloween ticket scam the TM outlet here pulled....)

So, if any of you are in the area and you'd be willing to drive to SU
to see DMB, send me personal e-mail (klong@nysernet.org) and I'll take
your mail to the SU petition owners. Please don't send mail if you
aren't really going to be able to go.

My apologies for the length of this post.

likely #36. They've been working on Say Goodbye a lot in the past few months,
if I remember right, he brought that one out sometime early last year, and

---as of this point, dave Matthews Band is still allowing soundboard
patches [i'll assume, but i haven't seen/taped a show since last

you can just come out of the soundboard. If you go to a DMB show and

UTTAD

SPICE@DICKINSON.EDU Wed Sep 28 12:33:02 1994

i think the album is great. the more i listen to it the more it grows on me.
at first i *hated* the strings (who said boyd was missing? ha), especially on
satellite. "could they have used more reverb?" i asked myself. the answer
is no, they couldn't have possibly used more reverb on boyd's guitar and not
much more on dave's voice but the whole album has a bit of a spacey feel to
it which i really like.

as a bass player i've never been impressed by stefan. his lines are solid
but not really very interesting at all. they back up the band well but are
less than creative. well, last night i was at work listening to the album on
a portable cd player with headphones and the bass came through loooooud and
clear (thank you, sony megabass walkman). for the first time, i'm very
impressed with some of his stuff. sounds like he might even be playing a
fretless on the album as he does a lot of really cool slides and stuff.
anyway, those are my brief comments.

i'll probably sound like a sucker, but i really like #34 and ants (*gasp*)
isn't all that bad either. in fact, i think #34 is the best thing on the
album...

web homepage

djb@mars.gtcc.cc.nc.us Wed Sep 28 14:11:15 1994

I have the resources available such that I can set up a DMB home page
if someone can send me information to put in it (pics, sounds, random
data, etc).

We've offered resources for both a home page and a public access ftp site,
both of which we were told are not useful since apparently we're going to
be sharing resources with phish.net

UTTAD,GUITAR TRANS.

MOOREC@engr.engr.scarolina.edu Wed Sep 28 14:41:04 1994

MINARETS, BUT I'VE BEEN A DMB FAN FOR A WHILE AND THIS HAS OPENED UP
A WHOLE NEW WORLD FOR ME. THE THING THAT SUCKS IS THAT I HAVE THREE
TEST THIS WEEK AND I DON'T REALLY HAVE TIME USE THE COMPUTER OR
LISTEN TO UTTAD. I HAVE LISTENED TO IT ENOUGH TO KNOW THAT I LIKE
ALL OF THE SONGS THAT WERE ON R2T AND RECENTLY BETTER ON THIS
ALBLUM, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF WAREHOUSE. THEY REALLY SCREWED THIS ONE
UP. THIS SONG WAS MEANT TO BE PLAYED WITH DAVE AND A GUITAR AND NOT
MUCH ELSE. I GUESS IT'S HARD, NOT TO MAKE THE SONG COMPLEX WHEN YOU
HAVE SO MANY GOOD MUSCIANS WHO ALL WANT TO ADD A LITTLE TO THE SONG.
I ALSO HAVE A FEW TRANSCRIPTIONS FOR SOME SONGS BUT I WILL NOT HAVE
TIME TO TYPE THEM THIS WEEK. IF ANYBODY OUT THERE IS WORKING ON
DANCING NANCIES, SEND ME WHATEVER YOU HAVE, BECAUSE I ALMOST HAVE IT
BUT SOME OF IT IS MISSING. I'VE GOT TO STUDY NOW. SEE YOU IN
GEORGIA, I HOPE.

O.k., maybe this has been discussed before or maybe no one else thought
anything of it and that it's not worth mentioning but did you notice that
#34 is track 34 on the cd?

Boyd's Wah-Wah, Delay effects, keyboards, +

whb4@cornell.edu Wed Sep 28 15:15:47 1994

I agree completely with Butros Butros Smith SPICE@dickinson.edu (Reid
Spice) in his message about popularity. Where is that (Boyd's)
WAH-WAH??!!! I LOVE wah and I thought that it sounded cool as shit! Also,
I really dug the delay on Dave's vocals, that was soooo cool. Basically
because he knew exactly when not to use it! Does no one else miss these
unique goodies?? Also, my signature has a quote from some dave mathews
show that I need an ID on. THAT was a COOL watchtower yes siry-bob! Who
was playing keyboards on that particular Watchtower? Someone out there
knows no doubt. I think that keyboard player should be a permanent member
of the band (or was it just dave playing really slow and loud?)! That show
also had a cool story about Dave playing guitar in the streets of
Amsterdam. That tape was the first time I heard Dave and I have been
completely hooked since then!

cool pictures available now, more coming soon

btanen@netspace.students.brown.edu Wed Sep 28 15:44:45 1994

We (minarets) are indeed going to be sharing resources with Phish net, on
a computer called netspace.students.brown.edu. See my address, too.

As of right now, you can ftp to this machine (it is also called
archive.phish.net and ssc.org and netspace.org and some other things
which I forget). Available through FTP are some cool pictures of the
band taken in Athens GA at Superjam back in June.

Regarding a web page, I have been sort of working on one for a while but
list have been accumulating.

I know you all can't help with the first two (short of doing school work
for me).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

what they say is true about what they decided to record, then it's okay by
me.

tight in this song

acoustic more, but it's one of my fav's.

redundant as halloween is, it's good to see Dave and Co.'s heart again.

was on teh setlist for the disc.

#34: never heard it before, and I have to respectfully disagree with
madamoiselle claire[ sp? you frenchies correct me], I reallyy like it. It
too will go on a mix. I like the mixture of emotions and they way that each
of them feed off of each other.

be eternally in your debt! .... in my first few listens, REM does indeed
suck, or at least it's not the band I grew up listening to. maybe jangle is
indeed dead....Big Head Todd is really good, but I can't stomach taking UTTAD
out of the cd player for long enough to give it a good listen. Gotta run!

On the topic of the Towne Point Park show that was videotaped in Norfolk,
Va...please tell me if anyone knows whats happening in that, because I
was in THE FRONT AND CENTER for that show, and I know my friends and I
would love to know where we could see our faces, but more importantly,
relive an INCREDIBLE show(it was a total - FREE - high)...Thanks, Carrie

Anybody else out there think that the beginning to song #9 (Jimi Thing
I think, disc isn't with me right now) pre-vocals sounds like an opening to
a
Doobie Brothers song????

though. Listen to the Music, maybe?

Kids said, "yep. Dave's really gonna take off with this one." Kinda scary.

my perspective

lmorgan@uclink.berkeley.edu Wed Sep 28 17:03:37 1994

wow

the West coast and I am ecstatic that yesterday I could walk down to my
local store and pick up some DMB. Also I get to see Dave live in a couple
of months.
around out here, so there's a contingent of fans growing in California,
too.
(I have my own theory.)
