The possiblities for a setlist file has been discussed by a few netters, but so far none is in existence. The only help I can give you is this. would a set list file even be appropriate for Dave Matthews? a concentrated effort was made by me and a few others last year but i quickly faded from the project and have a feeling the others did as well. Dave's setlists aren't varied enough [moreso these days obviously] to compile all his setlists.....IMHO. This is not to say that someone with a real itching to do it shouldn't. any input? alex crothersTop Permalink

3) Did anyone else notice, or did every cool band release an album this month[ or at least just about every cool band] (i.e. DMB, Blues Traveler, the Samples, REM, Widespread Panic...). At this rate, I will not even be able to pay my fraternity dues! Argh! let's not forget everything, rusted root's premier cd, new music from peter gabriel, and a collaboration b/w the dude of life and phish due out early next month. also, edie brickell released new music this month, and for people into industrial (not likely on this net, i know) pop will eat itself released a new cd this month. i just found out about everything and peter gabriel today. ____________________________________ "it is indeed a great gift of heaven\____________________________________ __________________________________ \_________________________________Top Permalink
i got my UTTAD album sampler today, and i just want to say that one of the most impressive songs is WWYS with popper. it was so unexpected, but it's absoulutely insane. (insane good.....) i dunno maybe some of it has to do with the fact that i've always been a sucker for a guy who can play the harmonica.. but i'm sure my opinion isn't biased jsut because of that.... also.. i know last year we established teh jimithing/fallatio connection.. but 'this song is about getting hiiiggggggghhhhhh...' so i thought i might introduce this as a topic of interest.. i'm not saying it's not about either subject, or only about one or the other..(because obviously we can see the pertanance to each subject...) i just thought i'd be spunky and provide a little net-forum. smiles to all.. love and light.. clare emily 'racing turtles, the grapefruit is winning' ******************************************************************************** ********************************************************************************Top Permalink
just for reference this will help you make judgements on the size of venues. seems to me that a fair number of people might be interested in knowing this, so that when they hear "such and such holds 8,000," they can get some idea of how big a place they are dealing with. this will prolly start a small thread, because i'm a bit vague on these, but it's a start. 100 == any bar specifically designed to bring in bands and play. this is 800 == crossroads concert hall (TRAX--c'ville). college town warehouse type 1000 == flood zone(richmond). another college town warehouse type, but 5-6000 == redmon center, jmu convo center. this is about the size of 7-9000 == uhall, va tech, ur (robins center), patriot center (gmu). this 10-15000 == city arenas such as richmond coliseum, us air arena (cap center), i realize all of these venues are virginia specific, but most of the people on this net are va specific, and i feel i've given a good enough description to let people know what i'm talking about (that is, if i know what i'm talking about). at any rate, 23000 is HUGE. i have no doubt that one day dave might be able to sell out a 23k venue on a nye show or something, but the first half of u2's zooropa tour was still being held in places like hampton coliseum (see 9k), though the second half of that tour was topping out 40k and 50k in some places, if i'm not mistaken. ____________________________________ "it is indeed a great gift of heaven\____________________________________ __________________________________ \_________________________________Top Permalink
Head Todd and the Monsters also have releases scheduled for the 27th. If anyone has yet to hear GSW (they really don't travel too far south), I HIGHLY recommend giving them a listen. I'd probably call them the NY eqivalent of DMB. (Just putting out their first "real" nation-wide album...already have a huge word-of-mouth-based following...Sell out most NYC venues...etc...).Top Permalink
and Big Head Todd and the Monsters have releases set for the 27th. For those who haven't given GSW a listen, I HIGHLY recommend checking them out (they don't make it south very often). I'd probably describe them as the NY equivalent of DMB (just about to release their first "big" album...sell out just about anyplace in NYC...large word-of-mouth following...mostly known for floating boots...etc).Top Permalink

I think it would be appropriate just because I know I have a few tapes that are unlabeled and/or mislabeled. Obviously it would be a hard project, but I think it would be worth it for at least old tapes when the setlists did vary. Nowadays with trees and such it is easier to keep correct dates on tapes, but IMHO looking at, for example, random Trax 92 tapes or something would be helpful/interesting..... I think we should get together some weekend and start it (I like the title Warehouse for the file)...I think between the two of use we have a good sampling of years and a 100 hours or so. I like the idea of including wierd tidbits of Davetalk and between song banter and anecdotes at the end of each setlist. That will also help people lable some of those mislabled 92's that seem to float around. deeez nuts, Blake p.s. you're the man...Top Permalink
Just as a side note, in addition to REM, God Street Wine and Big If anyone has yet to hear GSW (they really don't travel too far south), I HIGHLY recommend giving them a listen. (Just putting out their first "real" nation-wide album...already have a huge word-of-mouth-based following...Sell out most NYC venues...etc...). did....as far as GSW being the NY equivalent of DMB, i believe Mike meant just the logistic [first nation-wide album, word-of-mouth, ect...] aspects between the bands and not the sound/muisc. When i first read the message, it caught me off-guard and i thought to myself, "GSW doesn't sound very much like DMB" but after reading it again i figured it all out. not sure if this has a point but oh well. alex crothersTop Permalink
i was just thinking about all the quirky souls out there that pride themselves on knowing random tidbits of live music facts. setlists and crazy coments at specific shows being way up there on the fav types of knowledge to possess. ( "there are 1000 things to eat other than cheese" Dave in a crazy voice after Jimmything this summer ..brown's island.) It's also a given that this type of blessed chatter helps identify unlabeled tapes. Even knowing that the setlists haven't varied much to speak of recently, i still think a setlist file would be used. (especially if the band gets as big as we think it will and its in a form that can be printed and binded way in the future and sold to the quirky souls ..like a DEAD BASE say) I know i have lost my fair share of bets about what was played or said when ... and i wouldnt have if i'd had a file to check. (horrible bets like ill do anything you ask whenver you ask it because i KNOW ..but i didnt). MY point.. the setlists will start to vary as dmb gets bigger. They cant play multiple nights at the same venue and play the same songs all the time. If we start a file now ..itll be all that more complete. SO, if enough other people feel similarly ..who's got the motivation to get it going? I'll help all i can. catherineTop Permalink

With all this talk about the new album I thought I'd throw in a little question for y'all to ponder on. If Dave were to come out with a video what would be the best approach???? I figure I'll throw in my opinion first. First of all I know MTV sucks in the way they do their programming. Putting the best two show on at midnight (Alternative Nation and 120 Minutes) and some of the songs they choose for Buzz Clips. Anyway, I think the best idea by far for a Dave video would be a live show which would show the incredible talents of each of the members of the band. I know it's not very original but I think it would attract more listeners..(I hesitate in saying that because I'm one of those who wants the band to make it but also likes the small shows.) I know some of you think Boyd is too Commercially but, for me and others that I know, when I saw the band in concert for the first time and Boyd went wild along with the way the band worked together I developed a greater appreciation for the band. You can't dispute the fact that Boyd catches the eyes of many new viewers. Therefore a live video would attract new people to listen more and eventually discover the unity of the band and the characteristic of each member along with what they contribute.Top Permalink
September sold out last night in about an hour, so I heard. So already, less than 24 hours later the grovel begins.....Any one with an extra ticket. For some one who loved the Dave Matthews Band back when people answered "What do you think of the Dave Matthews Band?" with "Dave who?" Some of you know me....and if you have a ticket you are probably laughing at my thinking that getting one today (Tuesday) was possible, but we all win some and in this case we all lose some too. If you have any info or possible leads as to where to get an extra, send me a message. Thanks for listening.... emily conjuraem@urvax.urich.eduTop Permalink
Once again, I have a few things to say. 1. There's still one person out there who hasn't answered my offer for the Dave/Tim 8-25-94 Birchmere show. I don't know who you are. Sorry. 2. Because the taping and trading has been smoother than anticipated, I would like to offer this show once again to any of the friendly folks on the net. The quality is great, except that the clapping at the beginning and end of each song is loud, since my friend couldn't put his mike on a stand. But it doesn't bother me too much, and I trust it won't bother you too much either (especially after you hear Tim play on Tripping Billies- wow). If you wish to trade for this tape, I ask the following- Please be willing to trade for more than one tape- it seems a waste to set up a trade for a single tape. Please have some hi-q of anything (doesn't have to be DMB) to offer. I do have things to offer in return. If you wish to reply, please send a tape list with your request. I'll quickly return the favor. If ANYONE can tell me where I can find a decent tape of the Phish 4-20 Lexington show, please let me know? Isn't Shelly on this net? Anyone? Sorry for the shameless grovel. A few more random musings, since I'm not quite ready to read that Plato yet. First, someone recently posted something in reference to the topic of Jimi Thing. I had always thought that perhaps Jimi Thing was the name of a bong, since the song is about smoking up. The line about "take a taste of what's below" is what led me to believe this. Maybe it's only my somewhat bizarre group of friends that name their bongs. Also- has anyone ever done a study of favorite shows, or versions of songs, by DMB? I'd be happy to take thoughts on this and compile them if there's enough interest- it seems a helpful tool in tape trading. Let me know (my votes will go to 5-31-93 at Zollman's). That's it. The ancient philosophers beckon.Top Permalink

wow! i am actually kinda surprised that the flood zone did sell out because the crossroads listening party thing went on sale at midnight last night (and there was quite a line) and by 1pm today there were still tickets left and i don't even think it sold out by day's end either. the uva amphitheatre tix haven't gone all THAT quickly. intersting . . .Top Permalink
...whatever you want it to be. if there's anything i proudly gave up as i was younger, it was trying to explain mysterious song lyrics in a way that will make other people understand what i'm thinking. i realized when i started writing my own music and people started trying to interpret it, then trying to convince me that _i_ wrote a song because of such-and-such, i realized it's a trivial waste of time, because we're never really going to figure out what the writer had in mind. personally, the first thing that comes to mind for me with jimi thing is felacio (sp?), but that's because i'm always hearing about people making the connection. underneath, though, it has a meaning of such depth that dave would laugh in my face (and so would this net) if i took the time (and believe me, we'd need a lot of it) to explain it. i think this is why i tend to be so hyped up on phish, these days. with phish, i don't have to worry about interpretting lyrics. or "scent of a mule, ya better watch out where you go, take those laser beams away..." kinda let's me get lost in the music without trying to come up with sentimental meanings for poetry and lyrics i had no part in creating. though, i admit it is sometimes really easy to figure hands..." obviously there will be some disagreement on this particular post. me what a song means. tell me what it means to you. and i think that is a good rule to live by. (there. i think i've justified myself...:) ____________________________________ "it is indeed a great gift of heaven\____________________________________ __________________________________ \_________________________________Top Permalink
Hey everyone, Hope everything is good on that end. I'm writing to let you know about a new compilation disc that just surfaced. Over the last nine months, I put together a compilation of 14 bands from all over the country, called "The Wiggly Compilation". It started with my love for Phish, DMB, Blues Traveler, and this band the Omar Saeed Qunitet who absolutely blew mw away. I went searching for some new stuff that was lurking out there. The result is much better than I ever thought it would be. Two of the bands have played the HORDE, and 8 have been featured in Relix. I had tried to get DMB for the disc, but they were signed only a few days before, (could have been cool). Here's a quick list of the bands : Planet Be (Boston) - great guitar harmonies, great songs White Buffalo (Georgia) - HORDE 93, funky shtuff and great vocals Jambay (San Diego) - HORDE 94, improvisation galore, unbelievable musicians Band du Jour (Boulder) - Allman like, and yet real original Spacefish (Arizona) - Very eclectic band, with funny lyrics, and great jams The Other Half (NYC) - New York groove stuff, with great vocals and movement Out of the Blue (Penn) - 8 piece band with an original sound and good percs. Moe (Buffalo) - Very interesting band, semi-Phishy, lots of parts, improv Blue Miracle (DC) - real hot band with lots of influecnes, latino, southern Mexican Mud Band (NYC) - funk, jazz, rock, groove tunes Other People (NC) - psychedlic sounds with great organs and guitars Omar (SF) - Great original sound, very original tunes, great stuff Supplication (Dallas) - jazz-rock-southern with a trumpet, a great band Sons of Papaya (Syracuse) - sax-saga\lyrics, very original and jamming That's a quick description of the bands. If you want more info about the disc please write back to me, or if you can't wait to get it , the best way to do that is to send a check for $12 to ColorWater Productions The disc has a ten page booklet with lots of info about the bands and is 72 minutes long in case you were wondering. Take care and keep on enjoying, BrianTop Permalink
Well my thoughts are more about the dave videotape I have seen, but a music video would be cool, esp if treated like Phish's Down With Disease (cuz I haven't seen it yet..) the videotape (i guess bootleg vidoetape) I have seen is FloodZone 92ish (i forgot the date labled) and was filmed from both sides of the balcony and the floor. TO me it sounds like Dave announces everything in Dutch (he did spend a lot of time in Amsterdam, you know) and has a lot of cool shit. I borrowed it from someone I have not seen in a while, but I was just curious if anyone had had the privelidge of seeing this video. Warehouse... what a good name. Since it's generally agreed upon that even at their height of different setlists, they still weren't all that surprising each night, so the idea of putting nuggets of information (mmmm... nuggets... mcdonalds.... 9 piece...) between each setlist... maybe it could also be pretty varied in its information. the setlist/davespeak part could just be a portion, maybe a whole section of compiled Nancies strangeness, or a listing of which recently's have a 'pretty pretty girl' jam... woa, i'm getting carried away. but i'm sure there are a ton of things that could be added to make it more random and scatterbrained... to make it more of a warehouse of dusty information. 'brother sister...' that's the name of a brand new heavies album too. and a song on the album. by the way, since i'm already rambling, let me ask you virginia.net.gods... what song used to have the sometimes intro-jam with the basic idea of "some people do... some people don't... some people do... some people don't..." then he lists all the things that some people like to do and some don't. was it recently? or billies? Jimi Thing... ahhhhhhhh screw it. :) I'll just let you guys do the work. But just to get you started... While we're on the topic of what sort of Dave video would be cool, I thought you might be interested in knowing that I do have a Dave video; it came with the promo package for UTTAD. It's got a couple concerts pieced together of them doing 'Tripping Billies'. Its pretty damn cheesy, if you ask me - the voice isn't synched in some parts, and there's this hilarious slo-mo sequence of Boyd doing the solo. It, of course, shows the obligatory smiley-happy neo-hippie crowd (this video is supposed to go to concert halls who are looking for acts) and it gives me a hoot every time I view it. Oh well, just my 2 cents. Brian Whitman bwhitman@aol.comTop Permalink
I didnt realize that the lyrics to some of these older songs haven't been transcribed. This is "The Maker" (aka "Eyes of the Maker"). Not sure who's song it is, but Michael Hedges does a very clean version of it, where you can actually understand all of the lyrics (but I can't figure out which of 300 that's filler on, so clarity'll have to wait). Jerry Garcia Band also covers it, as they did in Richmond last year. I transcribed this on one listen through of the 12-9-92 version that is filler on set two of 6-26-93, as released by the band for the tree offered here. (BTW, I've mailed all the blanks I received, and apologetically cannot do any more, since I am starting to get the beginning of the flood of blanks for the newbie offer I made on the Phish net.) Anyway, here's my attempt... maybe your listen through can move this along. No reason we can't finish the lyrics file -- at least in terms of having a rough guess -- in the next couple of weeks. What we can't piece together, the band might help with; there have helpful and insightful instances which began with members of Phish laughing at some of what was in the phish.net's lyrics file, and then pointing out some corrections. Actually, I sat with Boyd and a small group at Miller's last night (to hear Corey Harris' delta blues, which I highly recommend, but I digress) and should have asked him about these lyrics, but I digress. Here Oh, oh, the deep water Like a whole life amight? Hello all, time. Minarets.net has turned out to be a really nice place! Ok, my point is this. I got this tape about two years ago from a friend who said that it kicked ass but that is all she could tell me about it. Let me describe some of the Dave ramblings and maybe someone can give me a date and venue name. It is at some kind of outdoor festival, Dave says something like, "It is such a lovely spring day and I just discovered that I don't perspire beginnings of my collecting DMB tape? I have one other tape that was my second tape, also from the same clueless person, without a date. It is from Athens, Ga right after R2T came out. There is an "Angel From Montgomery" dedicated to the Athens crew. sorry about the length!Top Permalink
More lyrics, from the jacket insert to R2T. Not sure why they're not in the lyrics file; the disc came out last November 9. I was just wondering about "Cry Freedom." Who wrote it, and does anyone have the lyrics for it? SueTop Permalink
ok ok ..im ostiricized rick ..only i didnt really mean "sell" .. i . I was thinking more on these lines ... not all people have net access, not everyone will in the future either. If the band gets WAY big, in the future ...people without net access might want a copy the "warehouse file" (or whatever it is called if it is decided that making such a file is worthwile). We ought to make such a file in a form that could be printed and binded so that those future quirky souls can have access to it too. The "sold" bit comes in like this ..there has to be some $ involved to cover the costs of printing and binding... not $ for profitt. Am i being more clear this time???? and ellis ... i guess im spoiled. But, i've never imagined a band playing the same songs at multiple night preformances at the same venue. Maybe that means im narrow minded too. I dunno ..but i guess i was thinking of the dead ..from my knowledge and experience ..they don't do that. i didnt mean to step on any toes! and Im still grinnin.. but i definately hope they dont play the same sets when they get that big if they do. jimmything....have fun and let the meanings of a song be whatever they are to you. maybe im a perv. thats been hidin the closet..but its really easy for me to see "take a taste of what's below" as way way sexual...but then i can see other stuff too... i know ive heard him say its about gettin HIGHHHH ..but play with that too.. they're lot's of highs folks! and ben ... "some people do ..some don't" etc.. thats Recently ...and its my moma's fav' dave thing. she loves to get curious about "some people smoke a bowl some won't" ... "is it don't or won't?" she asks with a devious smile and grin! dance with the world's kindness folks! cathyTop Permalink
Hey there y'all. for that matter, possibly playing the same set on two nights during a run. do play quite similar shows sometimes, but it's always at least a bit varied in the order of songs. Their repertoire is going to keep growing, and sset lists are bound to be more varied. all! Many artists play the same set for an entire _tour_. And they only play one set a night, at that. it wouldn't be so bad if he played the same show a couple times in a row. :) BTW, does anyone have good directions to the Ritz in Raleigh? I could also give someone a ride to the show there if anyone needs one. Take it easy. -Dash :)Top Permalink
First off, I want to say what an incredible song The Maker is.. I have it on only one tape that was in the back of my collection and I hadn't listened to in a long time (it was one of my first DMB tapes, and wasn't the GREATEST quality.. so it got shuffled) and hot damn.. all I can say is Dave & co better get off their asses and write more material. Seems like every 'new' song I hear for the first time blows me away. (come up through my toes to my ankles to my head to my soul I'm blown away) There is something to be said that cannot be put into words (think about it) about a band/musician that reaches into your soul and can manipulate you like that. When your emotions run loose, it's a beautiful thing. I can understand seeing a loved one for the first time in a long time, or smelling the scent of a campfire from your childhood, or tasting mom's home cooking. But to think that every single time we listen to certain music, no matter how often, it continually puts you in that state of overwhelmingness.. it's mind-boggling. Ok.. well, I think I've rambled enough.. 'course, that's what this net is all about, no? :) Speaking of The Maker, though, I was going through some of my tapes, & thought I'd see if I could get any help here.. can anyone give any more information on these ? : Harrisonburg, VA 2/??/92 (date, venue, etc) Julio Down by the Schoolyard, Warehouse, What Would You Say Montgomery, Watchtower, Lover Lay Down, Satellite, Recently Van Ripers Festival (?) ??/??/92 (date, etc) Nancies, Watchtower, Billies.... Say, (hmm.. just noticed that.. guess I'll be listening to that & re-doing my tape cover.. :), Ants, (double hmm.. maybe 2 different shows..), Two Step, Lover Lay Down, Dangerous Hours, I'll Back you Up, Satellite (triple hmm.. looks like either 2 shows, or someone seriously messed me up when they gave me the setlist. :) Also, if you have The Maker, or any tapes with anything they don't play every show, I'd love to get my greedy little paws on it. I have a decent number of tapes (dmb, bt, & a bit of everything), so let me know if you'd like to trade. ankles to my head to my soul I'm blown away) There is something to be said that cannot be put into words (think about it) about a band/musician that reaches into your soul and can manipulate you like that. When your emotions run loose, it's a beautiful thing. I would have to agree...that's completely how I got involved in this whole DMB scene...I never understood Deadheads until I heard DMB...I saw them play here (albeit slightly intoxicated), and had to keep listening, and if I listen, I have to keep listening...I can't just listen for a "little while". (Does that make sense?) I can understand seeing a loved one for the first time in a long time, or smelling the scent of a campfire from your childhood, or tasting mom's home cooking. But to think that every single time we listen to certain music, no matter how often, it continually puts you in that state of overwhelmingness.. it's mind-boggling. Again, Brett, you said it for me. [Sorry if you don't live in/near VA.. you can stop reading now] I know there's a separate Rusted Root mailing list now, I'm on it, but since there are so many Richmond, VA-area people on minarets, and knowing first-hand what an incredible band Rusted Root is, I thought I'd share. Rusted Root will be playing at Randolph Macon College in Ashland, VA (near Richmond.. near Kings' Dominion) on October 2nd at around 6pm (to 7:30 or so) for FREE. Their road manager just emailed me, so this info should be pretty up to date and correct.. :) Rusted Root is a neo-hippie band (like, who isn't?) with an incredible sound. They have 7 people in the band, and probably play a combined 20 instruments. And that exagguration isn't big.. Their music has tons of energy, they all seem to be very good musicians, and it's just a fun time for all. (eww) Seriously, though, I've been listening to them since a netter included some of their first cd as filler, and I (and my girlfriend at the time) liked it so much we ordered cd's from a store in PA (they were/are still growing..), and they just put out a new CD a few weeks ago (major label) that is incredible. Called When I Woke. Anyway, a friend who'd never heard them before and I saw them at horde, and he only said 'they are going to be big'.. and I think he is right, they have a unique sound that's very eclectic, including lots of drums and washboards and well, just about anything you can play music on. Ok, anyway, sorry for the wasted ramblings to those whom this information does no good. But if you can, check them out! I'm dragging lots of friends with me & if you're going, let me know! take care, brett -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brett Kingswell bmking@mail.wm.edu "Starlight, starbright, first star I see tonight; I wish I may, I wish I might, aww, fuck, it's a satellite." - John PopperTop Permalink

(not like nowadays) this was in the days when he did the stunning harmony on the word 'doind' in the phrase 'everybody asks me how she's doing' 9anyone who has a version of pay4 with this knows what i mean....[wink, wink] be good to one another. hey.. you.. yes you reading this.. you are a child of the universe. you have a right to be here. strive to be happy. love one another. share energy. love and light, ******************************************************************************** ********************************************************************************Top Permalink

the bands covers in the file? i always figured i was making a file for the band specifically, so i left out all the covers. if the net thinks they should be there (i know that phish.net includes covers), let me know. aside from the maker, we need me & julio and watchtower. i really don't think at this point we need nature, or any of the others, because they just don't seem that important. well, maybe redemption song. i know they never play me & julio anymore, nor are they likely to, but the version i've heard is so great that every dave fan deserves a copy, and therefore the lyrics. so, if you think the lyrics file should include these covers, just send me a quick note saying so, and i'll work on getting them in there. ____________________________________ "it is indeed a great gift of heaven\____________________________________ __________________________________ \_________________________________Top Permalink

I hate to subject everyone on the DMB newsgroup to this fallacy, but I was supposed to trade some tapes with a guy named Brian Blaloc from James Madison U, but I lost his email address. I think we got in contact through this group, so Brian if you're out there, email me back. I had a major file loss on Friday, and lost a lot of files, so.... I know we have discussed the songs a zillion times, so I'll leave that out, but I just got the new disc, the actual thing, courtesy of my job at WLUR the school radio station. I think it is quite good, but leaves out boyd solos as someone has already mentioned. Dave does the kinda geeky, kinda nifty thing of making #34 track 34 with 1second tracks inbetween. The new satellite adds Tim which is cool, but I might as well never listen to the Ants again...and I also lament the fact that, as I had somehow thought, that Say Goodbye is nowhere to be seen. Anyways IMHO a solid effort showing what the studio can add... Picts inside the cover are cool too, I think you can see downtown Richmond in the top right coner of one, but I could be wrong... *-----------------------------------------------------------------------* |Chris "Boofy" Buford | |cbuford@liberty.wlu.edu P.O.Box 322 | |Washington and Lee University Lexington, Va. 24450 | | | | _/_/_/_/ _/_/_/_/ _/_/_/_/ | | _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ | | _/ _/_/_/_/ _/_/_/ | | _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ | | _/_/_/_/ _/ _/ _/_/_/_/ | | | |v3.2 | *-----------------------------------------------------------------------*Top Permalink

i'm not posting a full review of the cd here on the net because i'm of the philosophy that you should have some surprises, but i'll say these 1) i really like best now. it was of passing interest to me before, 2) if you can find a way to program your cd player to automatically without further ado, here is a full critique of ants as it appears on uttad. if your undigestified, you can hit delete now and just wait, if your digestified, i've left excess room at the top and bottom of the critique so that you can hit return successively (once or twice, i don't know because i'm not done yet) until you see my sig. it's __extremely__ subjective and worth many a flame, but so many people have talked about their problems with the r2t version that i see no reason to be nice. i know this goes against the "minarets.net is such a nice place" ideal, but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do (and you women are more than welcome to do what you wanna do as well..;) it's the same goddamn fucking thing as remember two things with maybe 1)the annoying intro has been shortened, but alas, not altogether 2)they've added some sort of abbreviated chorus between the first and 3)the other places where dueling banjos appeared is now just a simple aside from that, it's the same song _yet again_. it still starts with a really annoying chop from carter which segues horribly into what actually sounds like the exact same mix from trax on aug 31st, 1993, only without the crowd's cheering. and now back to our regularly scheduled minarets.net. i insist that you flame me personally, because a lot of people like minarets the way ____________________________________ "it is indeed a great gift of heaven\____________________________________ __________________________________ \_________________________________Top Permalink

master for the first interview Carter did with the band, but now that they're getting big, Carter wants to hear the interview to make sure he didn't stick his foot in his mouth before we transcribe it, and I plan on respecting that. (There are some things he said which he probably wouldn't want to admit to. There is also Dave singing Monkees songs in the background.) If this doesn't get transcribed for a while, will it still be able to make it in? of a cassettee, and then some.... Also, is no one hosting a DMB web page? If not, why not?? JohnTop Permalink

The only club [that i know of] is JM's and that has several I believe JMU has a larger concert hall but that traces back to the fact that JMU's concert committee never gets off its ass [sorry if i offend anyway]....seems like Hburg needs a medium size venue [500-2000 people]... alex crothersTop Permalink
I saw Everything open for Aquarium Rescue Unit in Ithaca a few weeks ago and let me tell you they are AMAZING!! They are excellent musicians, very innovative, very rockin, groovin, and definetely funky. One of their songs, SO THIS, is so funky it hurts. I am serious these guys are unknown and AWESOME!! They also have a really cool message in their lyrics. Lastly, I got to chill with them and they are definetely REALLY Cool with a capital C. I find myself asking that question because his poetry is so beautiful and inspired. He touches the heart of basically ANY listener who gives him a chance. I have single handedly turned on virtually all of my friends to DMB and let me tell you it was not hard. He has touched my life in such a positive way! Also, the whole band is full of simply AMAZING musicians. It is almost to good to be true. Ahhh, the bittersweet sensation of a small band reaching a MUCH larger crowd, but that is a good thing right? "find some inspiration, its down deep inside of you...." {soulfish in the background} copy of the show at Ziggy's if nothing else. I talked to the guys before and after the show, and they were not only really nice, but thanked me several times for interest in the band, and said that next time, I'd get a copy of the show [ I won't forget my deck this time!!!] and anyone interested can get a copy of the show[s] from me either in the form of a tree[ but I don't have a DAT, nor do I know anyone around here that does, nor does Ziggy's , but JS[?] ] or I'll just make you a copy dep on demand. is a "black hole of music" . At least you've had cool bands in your hometown. I know of one band from Charlotte that is making it, ie Brother Cain. Winston-Salem, my hometown has produced such fantastic [ yeah right] folks as the dB's [ great band, no future, jangle was dead when they got good], Let's Active [ my first concert was their last in the US for the Asso. of Retarded Citizens benefit at my high school's auditorium [2000]], and of course the Drive-IN Studios. Ziggy's does have great bands sometimes but they also have bands like "the Archers of Loaf" or "Superchunk" [ sorry if you like them, but I hated their show]. I will say this, once a year they will advertise all over the state and get some kickass, dropkickin, lipsmackin groovy band or two. They got Counting Crows and Cracker before either got too much airplay on eMpTyV. But there is nothing else to do nor anywhere else to go, so Ziggy's can charge more now, and since I'm 20, the absolute worst age in the world. ie I can go to a club here, but not in some other states, and even if i can, i can't have much fun if the band sucks. Now if the band doesn't suck then I just stay sober, so i can remember the awesome tunes. Davidson's main claim to fame is soccer, and then maybe one band called Electroluxe. If anyone up Va way has heard them, i'm surprised. But, for the most part, in other words, Winston sucks kiwifruit. How bout either WWW page or gopher site? I just bought Remember Two Things and I just wanted to say that it's terrific. Christmas song is last on the cd and listed as 10:53 on my cd player at work. I was listening along, thinking the song was over when suddenly I heard a clap of thunder and then the sound of frogs and crickets, much like after a storm on a summer night. This was so unexpected and wonderful :-) DMB puts me in a very comtemplative mood and this little bit of nature was the perfect way to end the cd, for me. Currently minarets is undergoing some significant changes that will ultimately place most[all?] of its resources on phish.net's computer at Brown University. Once permanetly located here, minarets will contain a home page on the World Wide Web mailing list will most likely be run from this computer too. If anyone wants to talk to me about this or has anything to add, please contact me [jcrother@moose.uvm.edu] I'd also like to thank Ben Tanen and Lee Silverman publicly for their help. maybe we can start generating some ideas of what should be included at the ftp site and on the home page.... alex crothersTop Permalink
hello tapes etc. having never seen the band live. Now I find I get my chance in December! Hooray! All I know about are the dates with Phish; does anyone know if DMB plans to (gasp) tour the West, as well? I know I'll need more than an opening set to satisfy my soul. Thanks. Joe & LauraTop Permalink
Oh so much to say, (some DMB some DMB-free) First, I saw Tori Amos last night (great show) and the opening guy was named peter stuart. He was selling tapes of him and his band "dogs eye view" for $5 so I picked one up. I was really impressed by both his stage presence and songs, and his band. My question - does anyone know any more about this band. I think they are from N.Y.? Secondly - the 27th will be a banner day at most record stores. There was a full page add in the Westword (Colorado's music/events rag) for a midnight madness deal - and they put big pictures of Big Head Todd's album and UTTAD. I just thought that was cool. Other albums to pick up on that day : seems to like the song 'If I Had A Boat'. Wouldn't that or LA County make good DMB covers?) Boulder Theater - so it shouldn't sound as polished as Sister Sweetly) Monday morning the alarm went off, Monday morning I hit snooze, The radio came alive again 9 minutes later, I killed it with another snooze 9 seconds later, Next thing I remeber - "...lifetimes pass you by. What would you say?" end of the song - I would say "never hit that second snooze - or you might miss something. goodbye-ly (sorry this is quite long and rambling - but I'm knee deep in procrastination from homework...) hey whats up.... i was looking for anyone that has some big head todd they would like to trade for some dave or widespread.... i reallly would like some big head todd or a version of #34 for that matter..... contact me we can talk trade. also my two cents on ants marching...... first i love the song. I hate the little single drum intro but the drum intro on 2/22/94 at trax is pretty cool. i also like the little part dave and stefan do the descending funky kinda thing. i think we all have a favorite intro but we can't expect dave to put dueling banjos or sweet home alabama on his first big release. that would certainly limit his audience..... iwouldn't want my first BIG release to be associated(sp) with sweet home or dueling banjos i would want it to be my own....but anyway.... looking for bht and a copy of #34..... rich years, I have accepted a multitude of false opinions as true, and that what I have based on principles so ill-assured cannot be otherwise than extremely doubtful."Top Permalink

the drum solo/jam to ants on feb 22 was probably one of the best dave experiences i've ever had. it's almost (if not almost, then more) funky than #36 and just rocks to all hell. in fact, i think that's the best dave show i've seen to date. if they had just played warehouse instead of granny during that second set, there would be absolutely no topping it. actually, there is a better drum solo/jam. if any of you get the chance, check out the encore to dmb/phish, 4-21 in winston-salem. fishman and carter jam together on a single drum set, then carter slides off onto his own set, they jam together like no man knows, then both complete bands work their way into the jam which melts into a rippin' watchtower. ____________________________________ "it is indeed a great gift of heaven\____________________________________ __________________________________ \_________________________________Top Permalink
