10/26 DMB Tree REPOST

dforbis@birch.ee.vt.edu Tue Jan 25 08:36:31 1994

Greetings Minaretheads -

Finally, at long last, here is the final tree posting for The Dave
Matthews Band show in Charlottesville on 10/26/93. Sorry for all
of the delays, I won't go in to specific reasons for the delay (not
that anyone would care, anyway).

To anyone who hasn't participated in a tree of this nature (sorry to
those who are very familiar with this), here's how it works (an
example using the first bracket):
1) I send Jim Pollock the copies of 10/26 that I have made for him.

2) Bill Shaw, Jamie Treworgy, Steve Mayer, and Sami Kitmitto contact

3) Rob and Ed contact Bill, and arrange to send blanks or trades,

In a nutshell, contanct the person directly to the left of your
name (your "parent") as soon as possible, and work out whatever
details you need.

Any questions, email me (Dave Forbis) at dforbis@birch.ee.vt.edu

Please don't ask me to add you to the tree! There will be over 70
copies of this show floating around, and it should be easy to get a
copy.

Again, any questions, problems, lost parents, email me.

and yet some more updated info

jcrother Wed Jan 26 13:47:30 1994

if these times of ever changing information i have more to add.

the wetlands show with Tim Reynolds and Dave Mathews is back on.

Joan Osborn is opening and since it is New York City who knows who else
will show?

i have some other information too.

DMB, in an effort to battle the evil ways of Ticket Bastard, has created
a mail order system (kinda). it's not really "mail-order" but
number is manned (sp) by the management (Jane). they are selling
tickets to most of their shows (but not all) and is definetely worth
checking out (since its free). there is a service charge of about a
dollar or something which if you compare it to Ticket Bastard isn't bad.
besides, if I have to pay a service charge i'd rather pay it to the band
i'm buying the ticket for than to a big corporation like Ticket Master.

hope this helps some of you all out. some bands have been trying to set
up systems to cut out ticket bastard for years and here DMB is, "jumping
in with both feet." of course, it will all change when they get too big
to have only one telelphone ordering hotline.

Praise be to Dave!

SEAWA@VAX.RHODES.EDU Wed Jan 26 14:01:09 1994

I've always hated TicketBastards, as I'm sure most people will agree about.
Do you think this action to set up the band's own 800 order service will
spark motivation in some of the other bands we pay TM to see? I completely
agree w/ alex... I'd much rather pay money to the band than to TM; I'd almost
pay more to them than I would to Tm in fact.

I'm Back......... & 800 #'s

Daniel_Gold@brown.edu Wed Jan 26 16:43:02 1994

relaxing, and fun winter break during which i took the opportunity to
listen to DMB about 67% of my waking hours. finally, i am becoming truely
aquainted with DMB. i expanded my tape collection and began to understand
the infathomable complexity, flair, uniqueness, energy, and beauty of
Dave's voice and guitar.

DMB, in an effort to battle the evil ways of Ticket Bastard, has created
a mail order system (kinda). it's not really "mail-order" but

my MOTHER just got a dang 800 number. that's how easy it is. she just
filled out a little form and sent it in, and my house will have an 800
number within the week so all the kiddies at college can call home for
free.

it costs less than $4 per month for the service and the long-distance rates
are charged to the owner of the number instead of to the caller. the rates
were decent -- a little more than regular long-distance rates, but the
non-peak rates start 3 hours earlier, meaning you can call at 7 for a
discount rather than waiting til 10.

for the length of time it takes to order tix, the average call would
probably cost DMB around $1.50 or $2. therefore, any service charge they
impress on us is probably still a money-losing operation, given that
someone has to take time to answer the calls. but it will be well worth it
-- they will avoid cheating their fans, and they will avoid chunking
profits down the TicketBastard tube.

i hope the one-line thing is not a problem & i urge us all to be patient;
think of the time you'd spend on hold with TicketBastard. now at least
you'll just hear a busy signal then you can go back to listening to tapes
and hitting redial.

problems of supply and demand have plagued all of history...... but this
is a worst-case scenario..... there's a lot at stake here....... if i
don't see DMB again soon i might just curl up and die.....

love,daniel

Hi everyone -

Somebody recently emailed me asking how to subscribe to minarets. Well,
I can't remember what the address of the server (or whatever you want
to call the node that echoes all of the messages). Can anyone refresh
my memory as to where to send subscription requests, and what to include

Thanks!

thoughts on Dave and his situation

COGBILLJ@GUVAX.BITNET Mon Jan 31 10:52:10 1994

Hello netters...been a while since my last post. Quick update...yes
nye was a blast...got some new tapes...talked to Dave some...heard the
band quite often on the radio...I'm ecstatic that the band is doing so
well across the country...word is that he's been on the radio all over
the place...my roommate from Albany returned to tell me he'd heard
them on his local station...and he thought I was their only loony
fan...anyhow....
about this sister thing...it's really great news to hear that Dave
will be returning to play as early as he is...if his shoes were on my
feet, I'd be way to bitter and depressed to get back to the spotlight
so soon. It's not always that "peachy." However, sometimes it's
situations like these that spark the creative spirit in us. There
aren't too many great poets who haven't had some terrible experience
or just a miserable life in general. Often it is the situations such
as these that bring out the creative juices in us. Kind of
morbid...but true. Anyhow maybe we can hope to see a new batch of
songs...perhaps miserable...perhaps Halloween Pt. II, since we never
really saw any from his retreat to John Alagia's house over break.
Well just some thoughts...

Dave/Tim Reynolds Tree structure...

STU_GJCARRIE@JMUVAX.BITNET Mon Jan 31 11:04:21 1994

This is the structure for the Dave Matthews Tim Reynolds tree for the 12/12/92
show in Charlottesville. Do not send requests to be added...THIS IS THE FINAL
STRUCTURE...bother one of the folks below if you want a copy ;)
send me blanks with postage both ways. or 2) You can arrange a trade for Phish
tapes. Other tapes will be considered, but I have access to pretty much all of
the DMB tapes I want. However, if you think you have something really neat or
old, we can talk. One way or another, get in touch with me and let me know if
you want to send blanks or email your Phish list.

This is more of a bush than a tree, but that's probably better for me
and Rick, because we've never done this before. If any of the addresses
above are wrong, talk to Rick. If you signed up, but don't see your name
here, talk to Rick.
Thanx to all those who volunteered to be branches. I know that a lot of
you are itching to trade with lots of people, but this tree just turned
out so small.
If your a leaf who is going to send blanks, remember that you should
include return postage, as well. But you can work that out with your
branch leader.
Questions? Ask away. Like I said, me and Rick have never done this
before, so we may be going in a completely wrong direction.

Does anyone else think that True Reflections is one of the cheesiest, most

Sorry, that was rude; but I had to ask.

Has anyone noticed that the net has been very quiet lately? I wonder why
that is.

Anybody see the Everything show at Trax the other night? Leroi and Carter

again. I was just thinking that I'd be interested to know where Dave
has been played on da radio. I've been quite thrilled to hear the
band on WVGO 106.5 in Richmond, but was even more enthused when I
returned to have my roommate tell me he heard them on his station in
Albany, NY. Now he knows that I'm not their only loony fan. Anyhow,
type in and relate where and from what station you've heard DMB so we
can get an idea of how much they're spreading out of our beloved VA.

dave on disc(not) & HORDEnet change & true reflections

here's a funny story from the winter.
i was just goofing off with 3 friends in little rock (on of whom is a
fellow netter, aglide). aglide and i were talking about a sweet band we
were really into -- the dave matthews band. then the third guy says, "oh
yeah, i've heard of dave matthews. he's on the NO ALTERNATIVES CD." well,
i didn't know much about NO ALTERNATIVES, but it seemed to have a
popish-pseudo-alternative-doc-martin8-) type of feeling from the obnoxious
ads i had seen posted around campus. "NO WAY!," responded aglide and
myself.

well, it took a 10-minute debate in which my friend insisted dave appears
solo on the disc and aglide&i insisted we would know (from the net) if that
were true..... so we trucked off to the recored store to check out the
truth.

the third friend was fairly undaunted when he picked up the NO ALTERNATIVES
box and exclaimed "Matthew Sweet! yeah, didn't you guys say matthews is
sweet?"

oops.

okay, while i'm here using up bandw. and telling dumb stories, i might as
well impart some useful knowledge. many of you are already subscribed to
the HORDEnet, and some of you would like to subscribe. the
subscribing-instructions recently changed and i thought i should post them

To subscribe to the mailing list, email MAJORDOMO@WORLD.STD.COM

for those who don't know, HORDEnet is a non-digest emailing network for
discussion of the music which the readers call the "Horizons of Rock," as
per the HORDE tours. While the best DMB discussion takes place on
MINERATSnet, there is some talk of DMB on the HORDEnet. and many other
bands are discussed which might be of interest to YOU. so, that's my pitch
for HORDEnet. email me if you have any questions.

BTW, True Reflections is one of my favorite DMB songs, with Seek Up running
a close second (and some other tunes.... it's pointless to list) but the
downright invigorating. i listen to that song when i know i need some

True Reflections and Everything

COGBILLJ@GUVAX.BITNET Sat Feb 5 17:07:52 1994

Personally I think Everything is pretty "cheesy." The lead singer
might be a little entertaining bouncing and flailing around stage, but
all the songs lack much talent and sound the same.
Granted True Reflection isn't the best DMB song, but I think a lot of
that has to do with the fact that the lyrics differ so much from
typical Dave lyrics...(of course b/c they were written by Boyd)...so
that makes it an easy song to criticize.
And that's my two cents.

ATHENS WEEKEND!

btanen@husc.harvard.edu Sun Feb 6 06:48:24 1994

Hello everyone. I am as you can see from the address usually up at
Harvard but I'm in warm Atlanta right now. My friends and I just got
back from Athens where we saw the two shows.

First of all, it was nice to see the band again, which I hadn't done for
a few months. Now on to the details . . . .

Ants Marching
Seek Up -- over twelve minutes long :-)))
Satellite -- Boyd's funky intro!
What Would You Say
Tripping Billies
Lover Lay Down
#36 (a.k.a. Cris Harmony -- did y'all know that?)
One Sweet World

Minarets -- "Tomorrow Never Knows" quote
Typical Situation
The Song That Jane Likes -- a false ending (very cool)
Jimi Thing -- Dave with a guitar solo! (nice octaves, btw)
Granny
Dancing Nancies
Recently -- "Take Me to the River" and "This Bird Has Flown" quotes

Warehouse

One Sweet World
The Song That Jane Likes
Lie In Our Graves
Two Step -- great version
Tripping Billies
Pay For What You Get -- "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" quote
#36 -- different than Friday's version
True Reflections

Ants Marching -- none of that usual annoying intro
Seek Up
Minarets
Typical Situation
Dancing Nancies
What Would You Say
All Along The Watchtower

Halloween -- new (I think) end jam which is pretty cool.

Well, that's all folks. It was my first time in Athens and I'm glad as
hell that I decided to forget school for the weekend and come down here.

True Reflections

STU_GJCARRIE@JMUVAX.BITNET Mon Feb 7 19:22:21 1994

Not to sound negative, but I have to agree that the words to True Reflections
are among the worst lyrics in terms of the Cheez-O-Meter that any band has ever
set to music. It's not just a cheezy DMB song...it's a cheezy song in the
scope of all music. No offense, Boyd, but they don't leave many levels of
Yeah, yeah, amend my situation and my whole life is ahead of me...DUMB! I
wrote poetry like this in second grade. Amid Dave's fantastic lyrics True
Reflections is always a let down for me.
Now, I know this won't be too welcomed by most of you, but I'm gonna say it
anyway. I don't think that Boyd is the god that everyone (shows and here on
the net) makes him out to be. He's a good player and he's what you first
notice about the band, but his solos can get REAL repetitive (I mean the ones
that are so "jamming" and "intense") Often they are one or two notes played
really fast followed by a descending scale really fast and then an ascending
scale really fast etc... Personally, I like Boyd in Minarets and the more
exploratory pieces. Or how about 11/2/92 if anyone has that. The Warehouse
is phenomenal. Boyd and LeRoi (who I think is far underrated) split it wide
open and jam for a looooong time. I like to refer to Boyd's somewhat
self-indulgent crowd-pleaser solos as "losing his hat" as anyone who has seen
him do one will understand.
Don't get me wrong. DMB wouldn't be DMB without Boyd, but for some reason (and
I think a bad reason), he often overshadows LeRoi and Stephan who are
outstanding players. Watch and focus on the bass next time you're at a show.
It'll suprise you.
LOVE! BABY! (I don't know why I don't know why I'm singing) LOVE! BABY!
If you watch Boyd on this part of Granny, he looks like he's really into the
"Love, baby" singing as the punch of the song. Boyd just has a more poppy
direction in music (i.e. A big cheer from the crowd is often better than a long
exploratory jam) which is fine. I'm just glad that Roi is there to explore.
And anyone who doesn't think that Granny is a big joke on pop music should pay
more attention to that Davetalk in the lyrics.
That's all for now. Sorry 'bout the length, but the digests have been so empty
I thought I'd try and get them all full of flames ;) Donning my asbestos

I SECOND IT!!!! Sorry y'all, but Boyd really isn't all that great. The
few times I've met him he's been just the nicest guy so I hate saying it
but what he does is USE STAGE PRESENCE. Please, after you've had a few
beers, anyone who gets up on stage and moves around like he does is bound
to get lots of cheers and "Boyd, you the man," which is what some idiot
was screaming into my ear all Saturday night (he at least apologized for
falling on me).

Don't get me wrong. DMB wouldn't be DMB without Boyd, but for some reason

Of course the band would be fundamentally different. But LeRoi is
phenomenal-- it seems to me he's getting muich better and that he's been
getting more playing time lately. Stephan also rocks. But they just
stand there, which must be a personality thing. So if you're not always
tuned into the MUSIC, you think they aren't that great. But you'd be wrong.

hopefully a new studio album sometime soon after that. Talking with Charlie

Boyd

COGBILLJ@GUVAX.BITNET Tue Feb 8 14:00:23 1994

I'll have to seriously disagree with anyone who happens to say that
Boyd detracts from the DMB. I've often thought that DMB wouldn't have
close the following to what it does have now if it weren't for the
spirit and intensity of Boyd Tinsley. Boyd is usually the first thing
that people notice about DMB and many people who I've encountered are
just not fans of the music until they actually see a show...I think
this can be attributed to Boyd's intensity which comes across even
more in person. In many versions of Seek Up it is the fiddle which
provides the entire powerful mood of the song. Anyhow, that's my two
cents. Let's hear the other Boyd supporters out there in minarets
land speak up!

here's the words to what would you say, as well as the tab for the
main riff of #34 and the intro to one sweet world.
What Would You Say (March 27, 93)
up and down the puppy's hair
fleas and ticks jump everywhere 'cause of original sin
down the hill fell jack and jill
and you can tumbling after 'cause of original sin
rip away the tears
and drink a whole to happy years
and you may find
a lifetime's passed you by
what would you say; don't drop the big one
if you were a monkey on a string; don't cut my lifeline
if you were a doggy on a chain; don't bite the mailman
what would you say?
i was there when the bear ate his hand
and thought it was candy, everyone goes in the end
knock knock on the door who's it for
there's nobody in here, look in the mirror my freind
i don't understand the cause
and cannot speak for all of us
(morning lies the) lifetime's passed me by
what would you say; don't drop the big one
if you were a monkey on a string; don't cut my lifeline
if you were a doggy on a chain; don't bite the mailman
what would you say?
every dog has it's day,
every day has it's way of being forgotton
mom it's my birthday (would you say)
what would you say
what would you say
hey what could you say
what would you say

Mystery, Dave Solo Tape

@mail.trincoll.edu:sean.berry@mail.trincoll.edu Tue Feb 8 16:09:02 1994

I recently received a tape from a friend that is a mystery to me. On side A
is a recording of Dave solo in what sounds like a studio, but I am not
sure. On side B is a recording of part of the 1992-93 New Years show. The
Cry, Tripping Billies, The Song that Jane, I'll Back Up, What Would You
Say, Satellite-(After Her), Lover Lay Down, One Sweet World, Typical Sit.
SideB-True Reflections, Ants, Two Step, Jimi Thing. The strange thing
about the acoustic side(A), is that you hear a background singer on Best of
What's Around but that is it, I assume it is not Tim Reynolds, because
there is no other guitar. The Satellite-After her is strange because I have
never heard it before, it has totally different lyrics, (with the more
common ones thrown in at times) and is faster. It is a great tape can
anyone identify it? I would love to trade it I asssume it is a rare tape.

boy o boyd...

STU_RCTHOMPS@JMUVAX.BITNET Tue Feb 8 21:12:06 1994

i never really saw anything that said that boyd detracts from the
band, more that he just overshadows leroi and stefan. and as for
saying "listen to seek up," that's what gregg was trying to say.
listen to seek up, minarets, and (the now defunct) blue water, and
you'll get a true meaning of what dmb is all about and how they
relate to the growing trend of musicians who are playing music for
panic) every blue water i've ever heard has had a tremendously
different interpretation by boyd (though none can top 11-17-92),
but go and listen to _any_ ants marching, tripping billies, or
other songs where boyd is dancing around on stage with the big
cheez grin on his face, and try to find any difference. i'd even
point out that _nobody_ goes exploring on these songs, but it's
boyd who really stands out as not exploring. as the rest of the
band sits back and plays a ditto of the version from the night
before, they always look to boyd.
name the five songs which you think give the entire band the most
room to explore their creative diversity. (and don't include halloween,
unless you really think they can all pull together and make it a
five person jam).
1. jimi thing--
2. seek up
3. #34
4. minarets
5. blue water

wow. true, boyd does lots of repetitive jams, but that one can not be called
anything but intense. dave

Jam: my 5

SAPIRE@carleton.edu Wed Feb 9 00:37:46 1994

in response to ricks thread idea,
1. Jimi Thing--
2. Seek Up
3. Recently
4. #34
5. #36
6. (cause they have more than 5) Blue Water, What Would You Say, People
People

but the 1st 5 are my top 5 choices

yeah sure, we all recognize that he's repeatitive
especially on tape,
and as someone said he really can sing on seek up, blue water, etc...
but we're not All musicians, and we don't all like to explore
songs in our own minds as they do in theirs, if ya'll get my meaning...
and so the flare and up-beat stuff he does, can be like a breath of
fresh air. float up stream on minarets and jimithing, and get down
and funk out on Recently, What Would You Say, and Dancing Nancies.

i've a really great true reflections by the way, back when Pete was
in the band that really grooves. Not to start up again on that, but
whatever...

whatever...
whatever... (i meant float down stream)

hey, relax

1-800-594-TIXX may well get you tickets to some DMBshows, but I'm
not sure that'll work for all of them. The faxes I just sent out
to 25 publications statewide gave that number for any TRAX shows
(eg Cowboy Junkies on 3/4, Uncle Tupelo 2/17, ARU 3/2, and DMB

okay...

action for boyd other than singing, i can't forget this song. it's got the
best mood. two step because whenever i want to sing or jump around, this is
a great song to do it to. minarets is best on the above version(my personal
opinion). the whole band loses control like you'd never imagine. i can't
capture the intensity of this song with words. spotlight, i've only heard
live over the summer at flood zone. but i remember the first time they
played it (*twice the same night). i was awestruck and i haven't heard it
since summer, but i can remember being blown away and singing 'big city, black
city rising up around me...' (or something like that) for about a week there
after. i just like dancing nancy. the band usually goes nuts on this one just
like on minarets. i like the 'turn turn we almost become dizzy' part.

my two cents...

First, sorry about my last post--it wasn't meant to be sent to the net.

you wouldn't be wasting your time on the computer talking about his band;
obviously he is doing something right.

Is anyone going to be at Trax? Also, I heard they were playing at Sweetbriar
on the 25th. True?

A few shows I'm looking for. (sorry.) Have plenty to trade...
September '92--Trax unsure of the date, though probably around the 15th; with
Miguel on percussion; This show opens with 2 or 3 solo songs, possibly, but
not definitely Pay For, Lie In and Best. (Not that this helps to identify
the show, but Ugly Kidd Joe played the night before.)

Nov or Dec '92--Max (next door to Trax) This was an opener for
Weir/Wasserman (with Bob Weir witnessing one of the best Two Steps ever.
BTW, what do people think about post-Peter Two Steps?)

August 14th(?) 93--The Bayou; ends with Sattelite--Halloween (w/ everyone)

It was only last night when I said how cool it would be when the two best
bands in the world play together.

This show should change the way DMB thinks about music; though they jam every
once in a while, this will show them how to tear a song wide open (which will
never happen until Stefan learns to play Mike Gordon/Phil Lesh style.)

Also, (yet another grovel), does anybody have 11-23-93 (the Trax show just
before Thanksgiving)?
This show has the only Granny that ever kicked ass, the only time the band
has ever attempted space (Recently), AND the infamous "Moo-shi Minarets" (if
you've never heard a Moo-shi Minarets, your life is unfulfilled. Even if
you've heard one (and chances are you have), unless you realized that it was
a moo-shi minarets your life is still unfulfilled.)

i most certainly am hoping to get a tape of that phish stuff
too bad i'll be overseas (not really too bad at all)

anyhow i don't think Stephan needs to change his style at all,
much less IN ORDER TO allow the band to jam
not at all, i love the changes the band does, stephan and carter
are really tight
even their stuff from 92 i thought had really cool changes
furthurmore who's to say they have any interest in becoming a
phish like band, or will change after jamming with them
but whatever, i totally groove on phish no doubt drew knows
and remembers two things noah had
anyhow the show will not be one to miss
hopefully it won't be a dinky little DMB plays for 30 minutes deal
like it ws in chicago w/the Samples
but it shouldn't be. word

one last thing, does anyone have the DMB jamming w/Darrel Rose?
i'd love to work out a trade with someone

been so damn busy with school or taping shit. BTW, speaking of taping, i
just taped a crispy DSBD of Shockra w/ Jon reading poetry for part of it
and last night at a little bar here in Burlington i ran sound and taped
a band with Jon on drums. and to top it all off, for the last song he
played guitar. i thought it was kinda cool at least. anyway, those are
my excuses for neglecting minarets.net lately.

apologize now. i want to clear up/elaborate on the Phish/DMB thing. i
talked with the home office yesterday and got the new dates (which, bTW
are incredible. their schedule is Hectic but, good news, DMB is coming
back to the NE!!! it's only a couple of shows but that's better than
nothing. the dates are back at my house and when i go home tonight i'll
send them out--so look for them around 8:00 or 9:00). Here's how the

is also a concert promoter. makes sense. he knew Phish had some open
dates and contacted them about playing around that area. Phish said that
should be fun. unfortunately i can't make it but i'm sure my brother
will be there taking pictures since he lives about three minutes from the
horse center and DMB and Phish are among his favorite bands.

to do with Washington and Lee, but I haven't seen that anywhere. It is
i don't believe it has anything to do with W&L, but then again i could be
wrong.

hoept his wasn't just idle rambling

Can someone tell me about this tape? It's date is 9-30-92, and I don't
know where. There is some sort of percussion, no drums, and no bass. The
set includes Drive in, Drive out, Exodus, and Me and Julio.

before any aspiring musicians attempt to translate this info, i'd
just like to say that i pretty much suck at transcribing music.
most of these are pretty basic and it'll be up to you to figure
out and fill in what's missing.
1)use a lot of muting and sliding.
2)learn to use your pinky finger when you can't figure out how to
3)use hallowed out chords. dave lives for using chords that are

the idea here, though, is not to set out trying to play the second
one. just start basic, listen to song, play along with the song,
and work on developing the fingering, which should come naturally
as you work with it. the right hand never stops or changes during
the almost the entire song. up and down, really fast.

this really shows my inablility to translate right hand rhythm patterns
but it should get you started. i also know that this isn't perfect by

what other equipment (like connectors, cables) he'll need besides
a power source? Thanks. Neither of us have ever taped before.

Could someone email me a copy of the lyrics file. It was posted to this
newsgroup a few months back and I forgot to save it. I am fairly computer
illiterate (except for basic email) so if someone can easily get a hold of it
and email it to me it would be appreciated. There have been a lot of new

DMB @ Ziggys, Winston-Salem NC 2/10/94

campb_c@cs.odu.edu Sun Feb 20 21:59:45 1994

Hi everyone...I haven't posted in a while and I'm sure alot of you are
starved for 1994 DMB, so I'll post the setlist from last weeks W-S
show...besides I'm going to grovel for something at the end of this and
need some ODMBC...

Set 1 1 h 3 m
Seek Up (well jammed as usual, 13+ minutes)
Song that Jane likes (no intro)
Tripping Billies
Satellite (they've been doing this one SLOOOOWWW...)
Help Myself (totally SICK!)
What would you say?
#36 (Dave scat sings to Boyd's pizzicato...you've gotta hear it..amazing)
Warehouse

Set 2 1 h 20 m

Jimi Thing (good jam, Dave attempts guitar solo)
Minarets (Carter raps an old Beastie Boys rhyme during Dave's "chick-chicka"
Typical Situation (beautiful!)
Two Step (one of the better ones since the keyboard days...)
Granny
Watchtower (Leroi assualts the audiance with the craziest solo I've heard
Lover Lay Down (funkier than usaul)
Ants Marchings

For those of you that couldn't make the show because of the weather (snow,
ice, yuch!) Try to catch them somewhere soon...it's one of the strongest
that I've seen them do in awhile. Carter is playing CRAZY and LeRoi is
doing some truly inspired solos. Can't wait for the shows this week!!
Oh yeah..people in W-S yell out for Ants marching instead of Halloween and
Two Step..it was weird, I guess they didn't get to hear it twice a week
for 3 months.

Ok, here's the GROVEL...I was planning on going to Trax on Tuesday, but
have now found out that it's SOLD OUT?!? What the hell? Welp, I need 1
ticket and would gladly be your best friend forever in addition to running
tapes of any shows from this week you'd like...I'm taping 22nd, 23rd (with
WSP!) 24th and 26th...somebodys just GOTTA have an extra...please, please
please...Also, I'll be glad to give anyone a ride to the show. I'm going
through Williamsburg and Richmond. Free ride, drink as much as you'd like
and I'll drop you on the doorstep when the show is over...

Sorry for the wasted bandwidth..everyone have a good week.

whether or not this is implying that it was a bad guitar solo, but the two
guitar solos I have on tape happen to be excellent (both are on Jimi Thing;
1-19-93 and 12-31-93). He should try it more often.

Yeah..I was implying that it wasn't his best...I've got several that are
GREAT (1/19/93 IS awesome!) but this one was kind of weak...But the
interplay between Roi and Boyd was amazing...It's almost as if Dave starts
the solo and realizes that Roi and Boyd are starting to get off, so he
lets them have the jam. Don't get me wrong...it's a top ten Jimi Thing.
Just has a truncated solo...

..Praying for (but not yelling for) Halloween tomorrow night.

me too...maybe if we all put our collective thought together and focus
Dave will throw down a slamming version. Ok...at 12:47 am Wednesday
morning, EVERYONE think "groovin Halloween"...and Carter funks it up the
backbeat...

have a kind week everyone.

Derryberry & Alagia, The Birchmere

COGBILLJ@guvax.acc.georgetown.edu Mon Feb 21 13:10:18 1994

Good afternoon Minarets land,

I got the chance last night to see Derryberry & Alagia (John
Alagia--the DMB producer), and it was a very enjoyable experience.
One of the truly interesting things was that they played about three
DMB cover songs! It was great because it was the first time I heard a
band do a DMB cover...they played "So Much to Say," "Satellite," and
something else that I seem to forget right now. I went to the show w/
Christopher Sabec (DMB lawyer and fellow fan) and so with him I was
able to chew the fat some with John about DMB. One thing interesting
is their plans for a six song promo Cd due for release some time next
month!

Also I'm going to the Birchmere show w/ Dave and Tim tonight w/
C. Sabec and was wondering if any other netters would be
there...should be fun!

Vaya con Dios!

it! Dave and the boys with Remember Two Things. The issue's

Bayou

SPICE@DICKINSON.EDU Mon Feb 21 22:30:15 1994

alright, i'm planning on heading to the bayou for the show on saturday. any
hints from anyone? we're planning on arriving early to eliminate the chance
of not getting in. the bayou is only 18+, right? anyone have any clues on
price? i hear the people who work there are nasty (that's a god street wine
sentiment, certainly) so we'll be on our toes. hope to see a bunch of ya'
there... i'll probably be wearing a gsw hat and a phishnet shirt...

thanks,

and another thing...

SPICE@DICKINSON.EDU Mon Feb 21 22:33:02 1994

taping? possible at the bayou? or too small? thanks.

numbered songs phenomenon? i think it's really cool (and i can identify with
the difficulty in naming songs -- in fact, before i was into dmb, i would
write lyrics randomly and started naming them up from 31 for some terribly
coincidental reason). anyone heard any from the 20s, teens, or single
digits? which does the band play besides 34 and 36?

DMB at Breck

bobgee@merle.acns.nwu.edu Tue Feb 22 01:03:58 1994

I'm sending this message/request as a service to a friend who will be out in
Colo. skiing for Spring Break and really wants too see Dave play in Breck
(he's going thru serious withdrawal as he hasn't seen the band since NYE).
Anyway, the problem is he'll be in Steamboat without a car. So if there's
anyone planning on being in Steamboat at that time and roadtripping to see the
band in Breck (probably 2 hr+ drive) then e'd love a ride. He has offered to
pay for gas, buy you drinks, and do just about anything for a ride.
Oh, the show is Mar. 12 at Breckinridge.
If this might apply to anyone, then e-mail me direct. If not, sorry to waste
bandwidth.

Bob

P.S. Talked to Coran the other day. He says the Virginia Horse Center in
Lexington is "cool as shit" and there will be camping :) Can't wait!

The Birchmere...oh what a night

COGBILLJ@guvax.acc.georgetown.edu Tue Feb 22 01:47:12 1994

OH wow!

It sure was a great show tonight, Dave and Tim at their utmost best.
I met Wayland and Kwon there tonight...my first real outside contact
w/ other netters. Wayland is posting the set list so I won't spend
time on that here.

About the show...(my two cents)...So Much to Say, with Tim using the
slide and Dave as animated as ever was awesome, the encore of Angel
then Watchtower was tremendous.

The Birchmere was really neato...everyone sat at tables, but were just
as enthused as most shows I've seen.

producer of the Counting Crows cd who was there to hear Dave. Talked
to John Alagia and Doug Derryberry some...and after the show
Christopher Sabec was going to drive me back to my Gtown home but
first we got to drop Dave and an RCA guy named Bruce off at the
Marriot. It was so cool being in the car w/ Dave...the guy is
hilarious...actually damn near obnoxious, he was talking with this
Brooklyn mafia accent about...well, I'll let you use your imagination.
both of us.

whew.
sorry, I rambled.
Jamie Cogbill

PS--tix for the BAyou are $10 w/o service charge...yes it is 18+, yes
get there early for your tix.

DMB COMING TO THE MIDWEST

C526208@MIZZOU1.BITNET Tue Feb 22 04:54:53 1994

If any of you out there know Dave personally or any of his management staff
There is a great bar here in Columbia, Mo. called the Blue Note
and play there (or maybe it's just me). Could someone please pass this
information along. Also, the address is : 17 North 9th Street
It is a 800-1000 person venue. I'm sure that they would be very interested
in booking he and the boyz. I realize that they are coming to Kansas
(DEFINITE road trip), but I would LOVE to see them on "home turf". Please
let me know if they express any interest in playing here...it would make my
day. By the by, the town of Columbia has three college campuses in it.
Mizzou is roughly 25000 large. Great place to get some exposure!
Thanks,
Dave Culp (C526208@MIZZOU1.MISSOURI.EDU)
PS- sorry to all of you that this doesn't effect.

the promo thingy....

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Tue Feb 22 11:18:32 1994

i talked to chris tetselli of red light management this morning,
and he said the only thing available right now is a four song ep
entitled 'recenlty' with an edited-for-radio title song, as well
as ants, tripping billies, and song that jane likes. it's a radio
promo, and only available as such.

the big thing coming up, however, is a cd5 which will include some
songs that didn't make the album cut (i'm assuming they are also live
and recorded at the same show) and will include some dave matthews/
tim reynolds cuts, as well. they haven't fully figured out what's
up with this thing, yet, so i couldn't get a full track listing.
this cd5 will be available only through mail order or at shows.

i'll let everyone know more as it becomes available.

Re: Dave and Tim at the Birchmere

@mwbbmsg.attmail.com:rib!4399 Tue Feb 22 13:07:41 1994

Actually, T-Bone is not with RCA...he is famous in his own right. He is the
husband of Sam Phillips ( a talented singer-songwriter) and an acclaimed
record producer. T-Bone's latest accomplishment is the Counting Crows CD. He
also did a number of Elvis Costello and ZZ-Top albums. I will try to post
T-Bone's entire discography for everyone's information.

Also, the name of the tune he played with Tim Reynolds is called "Humans from
Earth."

The reason T-Bone was at the Birchmere is that he is considering producing and
DMB management is considering having him produce the RCA release (it is a
MUTUAL decision). So far, so good. Dave and T-Bone really got along well.
Tonight, T-Bone will meet the band at Trax and we'll have to wait and see
where things go from here.

Later,
Christopher

Re: Derryberry & Alagia, The Birchmere

btanen@husc.harvard.edu Tue Feb 22 19:09:34 1994

 Good afternoon Minarets land,

I got the chance last night to see Derryberry & Alagia (John
Alagia--the DMB producer), and it was a very enjoyable experience.
anyone remember when I posted asking for info about these guys. I told
this long story about how they were supposedly from the DC area . . . .
One thing interesting
is their plans for a six song promo Cd due for release some time next
 month!
hear the reverse. I mean, what if Dave and the guys did a song or two of
John/Doug's? Now, 99% of you have never heard D&A, so this is sort of
dumb to write, but how about "How To Love You," or "Wish You Well," or
many others which the DMB could totally RIP. Ah, here's to hoping.

Also I'm going to the Birchmere show w/ Dave and Tim tonight w/
 C. Sabec and was wondering if any other netters would be
 there...should be fun!

 Vaya con Dios!
 Jamie Cogbill

Well, now for some ODMBC (hee hee!):
The last time I checked Ticketmaster, they said a band called Quicksand
was playing at Irving Plaza NYC on March 26. What gives?

has anyone else noticed the upsurge of subscribe messages to minarets
lately? :)

please let people know the correct message to susbcribe to when relaying
information about minarets.

---to subscribe to minarets send the message, "subscribe minarets YOUR NAME"
to listproc@moose.uvm.edu
---to digestify after subscribing send the message, "set minarets mail
digest" to listproc@moose.uvm.edu

hope this cuts down on the subscribe messages to minarets.
