Bayou prices

JTNIETHA@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Wed Feb 23 00:34:04 1994

Here it is. The Bayou is an 18+ and the last time I went to see Dave it was
$8 but it might be a little higher now. I might be going but in case I can't
make it, can someone please make a tape for me. I can provide the tape if
necessary. If I'm there I'll be wearing a JMU hat and by myself so if you see
a lonely looking guy in the front row, stop and keep me some company.

Derryberry&Alagia

@mail.trincoll.edu:sean.berry@mail.trincoll.edu Wed Feb 23 01:33:29 1994

In response to Ben Tanen, Derryberry&Alagia is quite popular on this net.
There are at least two graduates of Portsmouth Abbey School who subcribe to
minarets, the other being Pat Parsons. Anyway D&A have been playing
Portsmouth, in Newport, RI, since '91 and lot of my friends and I have
become quite good friends with Doug and John. In fact every couple of
months John gives my friend Pat Parsons-fellow netter, tapes that he has
mastered in the studio. To those in Washington they often play at a bar
called Heads. Back to Ben, I see that you have "Southpaw", do you have
"Reinvigorating the Wheel" if you do don't you think a great cover would be
"Falling" or off "Rutabaga Stew" "Stomping Boots"
And off "Southpaw"-Desire or WIthout You or Tell it Like Is all of those
would be cool.

Blue Note in Columbia

klong@sura.net Wed Feb 23 07:31:14 1994

Just a note to "second" the suggestion that DMB play the
Blue Note in Columbia. This club is one of the finest in
the midwest. Many outstanding artists have played there
over the years. Big Star held their reunion show there
and recorded their album (this also caused some huge
problems for the campus radio station but that's another
story). I've seen the Violent Femmes and the Blasters
there just to name two bands. Columbia is a wonderful
town and the Blue Note is a great place to play.

The club itself is a converted theatre in the center of
town. A much better venue than the location of years
before at the end of 9th in a rather ramshackle building.

Re: Upcoming DMB show at Sewanee...

jcrother Wed Feb 23 08:25:39 1994

I just heard a rumour that Dave will be putting on a FREE show at Sewanee
in a few weeks (the 5ht of March, I believe). This sounds too good to be
true. Can anyone confirm this for me?

Dave is playing at the Univ. of the South in Sewanee, TN on March 5,
however....i heard nothing of it being free. I have to talk to the home
office tomorrow anyway so i'll definitely ask. here's keeping our
fingers crossed....even though i'm in Vermont and in no way planning on
going to TN for Any show..be it free or not.

This would probably be a good idea. In the past two weeks there have
been nearly fifty new subscribers....as many of us have seen from the
subscribe messages sent to minarets instead of listproc. :)

It would also give everyone the chance to see what information needs
updating along with the songs that still need to be added to the Lyric and
Chord files.

Also on the agenda is the updating up the Welcome message but, like most
things these days it seems, that will have to wait awhile as a result of
school and the upcoming WSP shows in the NorthEast.

This is interesting.....DMB considered alternative? I guess
college/alternative could stereotype them sufficiently.? On the other
hand, I didn't realize DMB was doing this well in the national sense.
Isn't making the Rolling Stone chart a pretty big step? I figured this
album would only be selling large numbers in Virginia and other southern
states. I'm very impressed. I think RCA has got itself a very
productive band for the next couyple of years. :)

Okay, here's the deal on Rolling Stone. They recently changed their
ratings for the college charts. Now, they go to ONE record store, most
likely in a college town, and ask them what's hot. So, obviously, it
depends on who they ask. Well, the 3/10/94 issues chart comes from . . .

Yippeee!!! This is a bloody great store!

All in all, we can be excited that DMB got a Rolling Stone mention, but
don't get worried that they won't be "OUR" band anymore, blah blah
blah. Just to keep it in perspective, the folks in Athens are much more
hip to good music than the world at large. Plus, the fact that DMB just
played two shows down there might have had something to do with the
increased record sales. Right?

In any case, I must be able to use this to convince some local stores to
carry the disc.

able to copy me a show? all I have to offer is some phish but as always I
could send blanks and postage and of course my gratitude. If anyone can
help me with these questions email me personally. thanks in advance! mike

and Athens is a pretty good place to pick in terms of music since so many
bands have come out of that area in the past 10 years.

3 questions from a 1st timer

Ian_M._Bassin@gorgias.ilt.tc.columbia.edu Wed Feb 23 18:41:19 1994

This is my first post, I'd like to know who the Keyboard player is on my
12/31/92 DMB tape and if he was a member of the band or just a guest. Also,
are there any setlist files anywhere? Does anyone have the Tim Reynolds CD?
If so, how is it and do any of the band members appear on it?

In response to your question about Tim Reynolds, he has two recordings
out. First, with his band TR3, is Shifting Currents. I don't believe any
of DMB performs on this disk. It is a great album though (all
instrumental). Tim has also released a solo album (just him on the ole
acoustic guitar). The last time I talked to Tim, he had a couple of
copies of an old TR3 tape that they made in the late 1980s (gosh, that
seems so long ago). I am suffering from a "lack of Virginia music" up
here in Maine. I was lucky to catch Tim Reynolds playing with Greg
Howard at a local bar before I left my hometown, balmy Blacksburg, VA. I
hope Dave and the boys make it up to Boston (at least). I was very happy
when I caught them playing at the Paradise with ARU last fall.

new chart system allows many different people to hear about different,
regional bands. Maybe the next time DMB plays somewhere, someone will
check them out because they recognized the name from RS. On the other
hand, it also allows the whole country to sort of guage what other people
are listening to. And that's cool too.

I wonder if we can write to RS and petition them to focus on Plan 9 (is
that what it's called?) in Charlottesville. THAT would be enlightening.

yes, trax and floodzone could be coming to an end

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Wed Feb 23 23:37:30 1994

in the last digest, alex asked if the trax and floodzone shows
it all came to an end on dec 8th. i was at last night's show, and
it was not "oh, dave's playing at trax again," it was "fuck yeah,
dave's playing a concert in c-ville tuesday night...did you get
tickets?" i would even venture to say the crowd was a little
different than it used to be. there were a whole herd of teenagers
crowding the stage by 9 (for a show that began at 10:45). usually at
nine, i'm up front and center, analyzing the setup. i payed
NINE DOLLARS to get in, and i'm personally looking forward to the
day i may have to pay $20. the dave matthews band is no longer
a c-ville local band. trust me, they are hitting big, and you

Best of What's Around

Hey my friend it seems your eyes are troubled
Care to share your times with me
Would you say you're feeling low
And so a good idea would be to get it off your mind

See you and me have a better time than most can dream
Better than the best
And so we pull on through
Whatever tears at us
Whatever holds us down
And if nothing can be done
We make the best of what's around

Turns out not well
But who you with that [ ]
[ ]
And hurts not much when you're around
When you're around

And if you hold on tight
To what you think is your thing
You may find you're missing all the rest
Cheer on up into the light surprised
Her arms are opened
Her mind's eye

Seeing things from a better side than most can dream
On a clearer road
And you can say she's safe
Whatever tears at her
Whatever holds her down
ANd if nothing can be done
She makes the best of what's around

Turns out not well but what you think that [ ]
[ ]
And hurts not much when you're around
When you're around

Hey la, oh, oh...

The best of what's around

We have been worried
We have been troubled
But always make the best of what's around

Sometimes I find myself feeling low
But I'll lean back and smile
Make the best of what's around.

**********************************************************

This is the best I can do right now. I based the lyrics mainly on
2/17/92 FZ and 4/22/93 DM and TR. The "[ ]" I'm hoping to find out
tomorrow when I see John Alagia who's going to be playing w/ Doug here
at the Pub tomorrow night.

Hope this helps.

Good night,

concerning a petition for RS, and my hate.

fostekc0@seraph1.sewanee.edu Thu Feb 24 01:48:55 1994

anything that a minority would promote....RS has become to MTV oriented. I
have a subscription as a gift, but I can not stand a lot of their
views....They may do a review of the album in the next few weeks if they
think that DMB will become a fad, which it will. I can not believe they
have not mentioned Phish, this is just what RS is all about...image. It is
now hip to be weird, or not hip, and RS thinks of itself as being hip. I
wish they could take the balls to support something good that has not yet
been supported by masses. They are on no edge. The only gutsy thing they
have covered was Blues Traveler about a year or two ago. Enlighten us,
show us something we can not see everyday. I admit (so I wont get railed)
RS has its good articles but none pertaining to music. Any Comments ?

(quick lay and goodbye, just for tonight, what you will...

oh well here we are by this fireside
and the snow outside
keep you and me locked up for tonight
i mean no harm here
but while we're stuck
why not get stuck inside each other
no, no baby, i know we're friends
but tonight, oh god, let's be lovers
roll around the bedside until daylight
won't leave, won't leave away

(man only kind) i'll do all this tonight
have another glass or sip of wine
and your eyes lead me to find
and we'll raise tomorrow
go back to being friends
tomorrow, go back to being friends
not no lovers
you go back to your man
i go back to my wife
back to our lives, separate from each other
and when you see me, when i see you
we'll pretend we do not know
one time we two were lovers
just for the night until daylight
come and strip us away

go just tonight
oh come down, lay by my side
( )
( )
( )
tomorrow, go back to being friends
tomorrow, go back to being friends yeah
( ) romance all again
i'll need just tonight in your eyes
i see and taste your lips tonight
with the taste of love on fingers
i might be all the way
( )
( ) again
and we'll be playful roller-coaster friends

and tomorrow we'll say goodbye
say goodbye
say goodbye
say goodbye

human as to human
the future is no place
to place your better days

cry freedom cry
from a crowd ten thousand wide
(hopelessly hope)
that this crowd will not subside
let this flag burn to dust
and in you our filled design is raised
while you wait head and hands hands in prayer
and fall into a dreamless sleep again
and you wait
and hands and feet are all allied
but wall between divide us
hands and feet are all allied
but gold between divided souls slip away

there was a window and by it stood
a meadow in which he could see himself
he thought of something
something he had never had
but hoped would come had gone

cry freedom cry
from a crowd ten thousand wide
while you wait
hands and feet are all allied
but gold between divide us
hands and feet are allied
but walls between divided soul slip away

in this room stood a little child
and in this room this little child he would remain
until someone might decide
to dance this little child across this
into a cold dark space
where she might never trace away
across this crooked mile
across this crooked page

cry freedom cry
from deep inside
where we are all confined
and you wait there
how can i turn away
brother sister go dancing through my head
human as to human
the future is no place
to place your better days

hands and feet are all allied
but gold between divide us
hands and feet are all allied
but worlds between divide us
hands and feet are all allied
but faith between divide us
hands and feet are all allied
but walls between divide us
hands and feet save the life

and then i'll sing and dance i'll play for you tonight the thrill of it all
well dark clouds may hang on me sometimes but i'll work it out
and then i'll look up at the sky
how my mouth is open wide
lick and taste what's the use in a worrying
what's the use in a hurrying
turn, turn we almost become dizzy

falling out of a world of lies?
could i have been dancing nancy
could i have been dancing nancy
could i have been any one other than me
and then i'll sing and dance
la la la hey la la la hey la la la
sing and dance la la la hey la la la
sing and dance i'll play for you tonight the thrill of it all
dark clouds may hang on me sometimes but i'll work it out

hello, how are ya doing today
i hope i find you feeling healthy
i'm so glad our paths crossed this time today
on our way into the night
it's love here we go, dance around each other screaming
baby i love you well i love more than life
why when i approach my hearts here upon my sleeve
you tell me your hearts into a thousand pieces

and i say stop oldie
old & wise, with clouded eyes, you can see what i can't
i blindly throw my faith into the face
of the next good thing that comes my way

so here we are all of us stand around
leaning heavy on each other
still we wonder hey what is it lies behind
staring eyes of one another
i think it's love, treats us well eyes(from behind a well)
baby our love is, well our love is pure and fine
why, when i approach my hearts here upon my sleeve
you tell me your hearts into a thousand peices

and i say stop oldie
old & wise, with clouded eyes, you can see what i can't
i blindly throw my faith into the face
of the next pretty girl that comes my way

it's love, {whatever dave feels like singing}
baby, our love is, well our love is pure and fine
why, when i approach, the tears are falling rain
you tell me, your hearts into a thousand peices
love...
baby...
love...
baby...

Help Myself

a hungry boy
in a town of one hundred more
the food is out the door
make me want to help myself help my--
oh river's edge
pouring from the side of his head
a bullet through the brain
make him feel different today

oh colder grow the days
oh much faster pass the years by
'til we die

a treasure not my own
i take it, took it, nobody will notice
well that suits me well
big house, big yard, help myself, help myself
help myself
every once in a while
to help the helpless comes into style
the mercy mercy mile
1-800-help myself help myself
help myself

oh colder grow the days
oh much faster pass the years by
oh colder grow the days
oh much faster pass the years by
'til we die

summers here we're swimming in the river
summer rain burns holes in flowers
dangerous hours
dangerous hours
dangerous hours

every now and then
tv preacher tell of heaven
redemption for a penny a soul
1-800 help yourself help yourself
help yourself

summer's here we're swimming in the river
summer rain come down come down come down come down yeah
summer's here we're dancing in the daisies

Lie In Our Graves

when i step into the room my arms open wide
when i step into the room my eyes searching 'round
would you not like to be
sitting on top of the world with your legs hanging free
would you not like to be OK, OK, OK

when we're walking by the water
splish splash me and you taking a bath
when we're walking by the water
come to my toes to my ankles to my head to my soul
then i'm blown away

{bridge}

when we're walking by the water
splish splash me and you taking a bath
when we're walking by the water
come to my toes to my ankles to my head to my soul
then i'm blown away

i can't believe that we would lie in graves
wondering if we had spent our living days well
i can't believe that we would lie in graves
wondering what we might of been
i can't believe that we would lie in graves
wondering if we had spent our living days well
i can't believe that we would lie in graves
wondering what we might of been

would you not like to be
would you not like to be
i can't believe that you would not like to be
would you not like to be

ok, ok, ok,
ok, ok, ok,
ok, ok, ok,
ok, ok, ok,

don't dance away

=========================================================================
Lover Lay Down

spend some time and dance in my hands
slip into my lovers'hands
kiss me, won't you kiss me now?
and speak (i would) inside your mouth
don't be austere and shy
for in no way it's no big surprise that
i will wait for you
i will wait for no one but you

oh please lover lay down
spend this time with me together
lover lay down
walk with me, walk with you

hold my hands (your hand)
so much we have dreamed
but we were so much younger
how to explain that we are stronger?
and we have reasons we like to deny
let's toss them away
see when we will lay down love (satiately)
by my lover's side together
eachother's tears we cry together
lover lay down

oh please
oh please lover lay down
oh please lover lay down
and you will-lover lay down
cause it's over-lover lay down
say love, say love, say love, say love, say love
oh, oh don't go away
could i love you, could you love me
could i love you, could you love me
could i love you, could you love me
could i love you, could you love me

darling it's all the same...
all the same, all the same, all the same...
but do we dance away?

chasin me all around
leadin me all around in circles
chasin me all around
leadin me all around in circles
say yeah yeah yeah

Pay For What You Get

work ourselves fingers the bone
suck the marrow drain my soul
pay your dues and debts pay your respects
everybody tells you you pay for what you get
you pay for what you get

everybody asks me how she's doing
has she really lost her mind
i say "i couldn't tell you i've lost mine"

words words words have you heard
that the bird in hand is much better
than any number free to wander
fly away stay you pay for what you get
you pay for what you get

everybody asks me how she's doing
is she really all she says
i say "i couldn't tell you i'm OK"

we tend to run away from the difficult days
we tend to run away from the difficult days
surprise surprise you pay for what you get
you pay for what you get

everybody asks me how she's doing
since she went away
i say "i couldn't tell you i'm OK"

pay for what you get
pay for what you get oh boy

everything good needs replacing
hope all these changes happen with you
in my life never before have i lover so adored
her eyes her hair everything she says
my delight can tickle me inside
touch my heart touch my mind

no matter what's inside i'll give to her
no need to satisfy my hunger lost in her

treadin' trodden trails for a long long time

Spotlight

in the spotlight life is so peachy yeah, yeah, yeah
wouldn't you like to retire with a million

a million beating hearts
behind brick and cold steel piping
fighting for the top
fighting for the room to breathe
bench parks sleepers lie
cold blanket bedless babies
here this must stop
i cannot stay

damn you, big city, black city
rising up around me, steal my soul away
big city, black city
rise and take me over, steal my soul away
but all out in this world
the night it crawls it falls much harder than i recall
out in this world
a siren is calling from every corner

in the spotlight life is so peachy, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
unless you are in the spotlight for a reason, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
caught for stealing somebody's riches, no, no, no, no
wouldn't you like to retire with a million bucks
yeah

came here from a small town
i see my dreams here in the big city
sour dissapointment
i cannot stay

damn you, big city, black city
rising up around me, steal my soul away
big city, black city
rise and take me over, steal my soul away
but all out in this world
the night it crawls it falls much harder than i recall
out in this world
a siren is calling from every corner

all eyes are in the spotlight for a reason, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

True Reflections

when you look into a mirror
do you like what's looking at you
now that you've seen your true reflections
what on earth are you gonna do

(ch)

remember the time you hung out with the boys now
remember the things you used to say
i thought by now you'd be the president
but after all that was yesterday
you've had time to go out in the world now
but you chose to run away
people ask you what your doin' now
you don't even know what to say

(ch x 2)

you think life is like a movie
where it all works out in the end
i think life is like a dessert
where does it go where does it begin

what on earth are you gonna do

Warehouse (9-7-93, 3-23-93, 11-17-92 ==any further thoughts on this song

(make this mind)
don't throw away your playful beginnings
you and i
will fumble around in your touches and be sure
to leave all the lights on so you can see
the black cats changing colors
well you can walk under the ladder
and swim as the tide turns you around and around

what i've found
they come and bond in a million
slip into the crowds
this question i found in a gap in the sidewalk
keep all your sights on
the black cats changing colors
and you can walk under the ladder
and swim as the tide turns you around and around
life goes on
and i'll turn on the tv spot in the middle
static for you, statistical be it, sooner
fade away, fade away
but this i am, it seems so good
hard to believe i'm into it, smell touch and feel
how could this rhythm ever quit, bags packed
on a plane (oh later on)

shut up, i'm thinking
i had a clue now it's gone forever
sitting over these bones
you can redo whatever your meaning to
keep all your sights on
the black cat is changing colors
it's not the colors that matter
'cause they all fade away
life goes on
and i'll turn on the tv spot in the middle
satic for you, statistical be it, sooner
fade away, fade away
but this i am, it seems so good
hard to believe i'm into warehouses now
nothing at all inside of, the walls and halls
have disappeared, they have disappeared

well no i'd love to (stay)
well no i'd love to (stay)
well no i'd love to (stay)
well no i'd love to (stay)

in the warehouse...
in the warehouse...
in the warehouse...
in the warehouse...

that's my blood down there
that's my blood down there
that's my blood down there
that's my blood down there

let's go away, go away...

What Would You Say (March 27, 93)

up and down the puppy's hair
fleas and ticks jump everywhere 'cause of original sin
down the hill fell jack and jill
and you can tumbling after 'cause of original sin

rip away the tears
and drink a whole to happy years
and you may find
a lifetime's passed you by

what would you say; don't drop the big one
if you were a monkey on a string; don't cut my lifeline
if you were a doggy on a chain; don't bite the mailman
what would you say?

i was there when the bear ate his hand
and thought it was candy, everyone goes in the end
knock knock on the door who's it for
there's nobody in here, look in the mirror my freind

i don't understand the cause
and cannot speak for all of us
(morning lies the) lifetime's passed me by

what would you say; don't drop the big one
if you were a monkey on a string; don't cut my lifeline
if you were a doggy on a chain; don't bite the mailman
what would you say?

every dog has it's day,
every day has it's way of being forgotton
mom it's my birthday (would you say)
what would you say
what would you say
hey what could you say
what would you say

( falling on my face if i'm lucky
lately trying to take it home
hey lee, falling on my face if i'm lucky
yes tangled 'round my feet
lovely leave it for me heavy would you

Capricorn who was preventing taping not the band, as he stuck his DAT in a
small drawer. He sayed that the taping was stopped because the number of
tapers was getting two large, there were too many microphones and the
sound was getting messed up from so many tapers. His response to taping
seats, we are not going to fuck with that. He said however they may remix
some of their tapes and issue them. He also said that there would be no
more taping for the rest of this tour, however he did not know about
future tours. I also have a friend who taped Dave, and if the tapes come
out well I will make them available.

after a nice 4 1/2 hour drive. i watched the sunset last night, the
moonfall about an hour ago, and now the sun is rising. who would believe
i purposely put myself in that position?
to play halloween, which they did. the 'song about love' that merc
mentioned was actually #36. also, about the taping deal... jeff at the
soundboard, and leroi, bothtold me that wp was planning on playing new
songs that they didn't want leaked. oh well... sometimes life sucks....
dwellers). it was huge, smoky, sweaty, hot... blah blah blah...
like rick said, i miss the smaller shows where you could go in early and
chat with the band without being mauled by security. i guess it's all up
to reminiscing now... i'm off to bed... i'm delerious...clare emily

Rolling Stone

STU_GJCARRIE@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Thu Feb 24 10:09:42 1994

To whomever said Rolling Stone does not support anything that isn't big, I
agree for the most part, but apparently their new Alternative Chart does just
that. Everyone, don't make too big a deal out of this chart thing. IT IS THE
LIST FROM A SINGLE STORE IN ATHENS, GA. Athens is very open minded about
music, has a great scene, and because of it's proximity to DMB's former
"home-base" would have been a host to DMB shows a long time ago.

This does not mean that the band is getting big. It doesn't even mean that
they are going to. (Although from the first time I heard them, I thought they
would be huge.) I hope that they become big at a good pace and not because of
a sudden rush of fame brought on by a catchy single (which could happen...they
have very catchy singles...)

The point about these single-store record charts is that at any given store may
have anyone from Lou Reed to some local band with a self-produced CD5 at number
one. That way, readers see not what the majority is listening to, but what
people in _ONE TOWN_ are buying. And, BTW, Dave isn't that big (yet). I think
he falls into the local hero scene far more than a widely known phenomenon.
DMB isn't what people are listening to everywhere (yet ;)

Re: 3 questions from a 1st timer

jcrother Thu Feb 24 10:30:02 1994

This is my first post, I'd like to know who the Keyboard player is on my
12/31/92 DMB tape and if he was a member of the band or just a guest. Also,
are there any setlist files anywhere? Does anyone have the Tim Reynolds CD?
If so, how is it and do any of the band members appear on it?
 ----------------------------------------------
Delivered by the Dalton Internet Gateway

I'm assuming the keyboard player on that tape is Peter Greiser althoguh
i've never heard that tape. However i could be totally off. It
could just be a keyboard sitting in with them for the NYE '92 show because
i'm not quite sure exactly when Peter 'officially' left the band.

Did this information ever make it into the FAQ? or could someone answer
this question for Ian (and for me) who knows? Thanks

Yes, it was Peter. I saw the show and also made one of the DATs of the
show. He left the band sometime in March or April of 1994.

Highway I've found
They call me one in a million
slipping to the ground (The question he found in the sidewalk is beside

On the plane, plane to heaven.

I'll play for you tonight, and they'll love it all (not thrill of it all)

Oh river red
Pouring from the side of his head (blood is red)

A treasure not my own
I take it, took it, nobody will know
This wealth it suits me well

Day is gone I'm on my back, staring up at the ceiling
So I take a drink sit back and relax, SMOKE my mind...

I don't understand at best
and cannot speak for all the rest

Drink a HOPE to happy years.

Also, nice meeting everyone at Trax the other night...

About the rap during Minarets...In Athens 02/05/94 Carter raps in the
background during Minarets. The reason that you were unable to hear
him is that his voice is almost a wisper which can only be heard
through his mike...In other words, it can only be heard on the
recording...Trust me I did'nt hear it while I was at the show either.
Also, I am pretty sure that I have that mystery ENCORE on my
soundcheck tape from 02/05/94...Can anyone describe this song for
me?...Thanks

jcrother Thu Feb 24 18:03:03 1994

Sorry to have to post to the whole net but I am new here and I have a few
questions to ask. First of all does DMB have a mailing list that I could
get on. Secondly is there an address that I can mail order their new cd
from. Last but not least is there any kind soul out there who would be
able to copy me a show? all I have to offer is some phish but as always I
could send blanks and postage and of course my gratitude. If anyone can
help me with these questions email me personally. thanks in advance! mike

Sorry this had taken me so long to get to but...things have been
tremendously busily..both here (in Vermont) and one minarets.

The CD can also be ordered Charlottesville, VA
at this address or phone #. 22903

i'm not sure if the mailing list is much more than a flyer with dates on
it since i've never seen one and really didn't even know one existed (i
just added my name today!). But if that's the case then there's almost
no point in wasting the time and paper and money needed to mail it to
people on the net since we get the dates alot faster than those flyers. :)

hope this helps some people out.

Re: 3 questions from a 1st timer

jcrother Fri Feb 25 10:14:25 1994

Yes, it was Peter. I saw the show and also made one of the DATs of the
show. He left the band sometime in March or April of 1994.

I didn't want to repost the whole message as it has grown rather long in
its development however the thread was about DMB's former keyboardist
Peter Greiser. This discussion floated about earlier on minarets but i'm
not sure if any conclusion ever came about.

As for the above, i'll assume whoever (sorry i deleted the name) sent
this meant he left in March or April of 1993 not 1994. :)

in an effort to try and clear things up with peter, this is everything
i know. peter greiser is from new york and jammed with dmb in it's
early days, but from everything i've heard, he decided that he simply
didn't want to be with the band anymore. the best reasoning i've found
is just that it was a personal decision of peter's to go back to new
york. his last show with the band at TRAX was 3-23-93, and i don't
know if he played any other shows that week. for some reason, official
sources (the band and beyond) are somewhat flighty on the subject, but
gregg found out from dave that it's just what peter wanted to do.

DMB/Dead conflict

bobgee@merle.acns.nwu.edu Sat Feb 26 22:07:48 1994

For all of you Midwest netters who were hoping to see Dave on Fri, Mar 18 in
Chicago, but also had already bought Dead tickets for that night -- never
fear, you can go to both. The Dead (at Rosemont) is scheduled to come on at
7:30, meaning they'll finish up around 10:30, then a 30-45 min. drive to
Schubas in time to see Dave. He's scheduled to come on at 10, but Coran called
the bar and convinced them to push back the time to about 11. (Coran, DMB's
manager, being both a Deadhead and a Davehead scheduled DMB in Chicago and New
York to coincide with Dead apperances in both towns -- probably not
coincidentally. He plans on making the two shows on Fri. Mar 18.) Anyone else
who is going to try to do this? What a night of music!Š

For both Dave shows at Schubas (MAr 18 and 19) the only advanced ticket sales
ar thru Ticketmaster. Tickets can be purchased the night of the show for $7,
but who wants to risk the show selling out first? (The place only holds 120 --
should be a sweet place to see Dave -- much better than the Cubby Bear).

The first set was actually really short and Dave seemed to be a little

Yahoooo!!

mercp@acpub.duke.edu Sun Feb 27 21:12:27 1994

Considering the present debate concerning WSP's taping policy, I have
a little story of someone who has their head screwed on properly. One of
my friends who went to the Raleigh WSP and DMB had spoken with DMB's
soundboard man (JEFF?????) at the DMB show at Cat's Cradle last week and
had asked if he could tape Dave at the Ritz, and of course was given a
welcoming yes. However, when my friend tried to bring his deck into the
Ritz, he was seriously hasseled by the huge, muscle-rippling bouncers who
told him that they did not think they could allow anyting like that into
the show. However with a little eloquence, these mental-midgets were
circumvented. He then faced more problems with WSP's soundboard man who
would not allow any patching, even during Dave. So, the badass DMB
soundboard man taped the show for my friend on their soundboard deck.
Yes,yes, yes, I wish there were more people like that in this world.

graves, too. they were both amazing.
finally meet everyone, and to meet so many at one time. the only person i
didn't meet was kwon, who came over and chatted with my companion after the
show. i figured out who he was after we left. but all in all there were
11 netters there. it was so cool!!!!!! hope i didn't come across as a
crazed bitch, but i was utterly excited. i liked the bayou's layout, too.
great sound, and for being somewhat small, it was very comfy. i'll refrain
from complaining about parking...
tapers. so nobody got plugged in until the second set. the wierdest thing
arose concerning taping, too. you had to have bayou permission. in
writing. i'm serious. tapers got stickers from jeff that said something
like, 'bayou guest... dave matthews band... audio recording...' tapers had
to wear these while taping or get kicked out. i laughed my ass off. we
were all joking around at the soundboard about these damn stickers!!!
breezed through my hometown of richmond. coran was the one
interviewed about minarets.net, and it included a number of interesting
facts concerning sales, the death of dave's sister, etc. if people are
interested... i'll type it out sometime and post it. just let me know, so
especially passal.

Generally it seemed to me that this was a rather uninspired performance by
the band. I love every show I go to, but this was the worst which I have
attended.
It seemed like everything was going wrong, Stefan's bass, and the one thing
that angered me above all was the monitor control woman, who they must have
dragged off the street, because she kept fucking w/ the monitor sound,
turning it up and down during songs, how annoying. I was sitting behind her
and and saw her fucking w/ the dials. Finally I asked her if she knew what
she was doing which she did not take kindly to. Did anyone else notice
this? What is everybody else's reaction to the show. And not Jamie, because
I already heard your reaction in the bathroom of New South 1, anyway it was
cool meeting you.

Time to toot my horn

COGBILLJ@guvax.acc.georgetown.edu Mon Feb 28 02:09:33 1994

Well, everybody, today was just awesome...

Currently I am what you might call an "intern" of John Alagia...or you
could say that I'm the person that gets to do the mindless stuff for
him that he doesn't have time for. What I do, or what I did today was
go over to his house and work on transferring some music by up and
coming bands around DC to tape for a project or organization known as
WAMA (Washington Area Musicians Assoc. or something like that). I
also did organizing and like I said...mindless work. But oh am I so
happy to be doing it.

It all came about when I was at the Grog and Tankard last week w/
Christopher Sabec last week to see Derryberry & Alagia and John asked
me for my help due to his overwhelming workload. Well, even if he
wasn't completely serious about following it up, I was...and I sort of
bugged him about it, until now, and it has finally become a reality.
John is a really great guy and he was very receptive and actually
enthusiatic about talking to me about the band while I was over there
today.

Also after I took the cab over there today...a certain someone was
still there recovering from a good sleep after an intense show...yes,
it was DAve. He left soon after, but it was so neato to be over
there. I also got to go out to a coffee house with Christopher Sabec
and chat over a cafe au lait and cookies (sorry, Christopher I forgot
the name of that type of coffee cookie). All in all it was a great
day for the number one DMB fan. ---(hope this arouses fierce debate.)

Sleep well all.

When they open 4 Phish

BH7N@MUSICB.MCGILL.CA Mon Feb 28 11:37:54 1994

My sister and I were debating about this on Saturday-
When DMB opens for phish do you think they'll play a
more straightforward album song orientedset (like
Set I at the Bayou on Sat.) or will they jamout
(like set II)?
I certainly prefer the latter option and also think that If
they want to impress uninitiated Phish fans, they really gotta
jam (although I guess lots of the people there will already be DMB
fans, just cause of the location).
Have they played with WSP yet? What was that like?
Just wondering,

a goose and a gander.......

RPPRISIN@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Mon Feb 28 13:26:05 1994

Hey to all you out there. just a couple things about the bayou show the other
night 2/26.

In defense of boyd......
I found that from where i was standing (above Boyd top left hanging off) Boyd's
violin sounded incredible. Maybe it was that I was getting most of the sound
out of the monitor rather than PA or the actual violin but it sounded
incredible. He is also in my opinion better than most of you give him credit
for. Watching his fingers move on the next i would be suprised if you guys out
there who play guitar could play his satellite intro (i think it was satellite)
on guitar. I play my self and would be impressed with myself if I could....
also what more do you want Boyd to explore with everyone else in the band is
playing a blues/rock/whatever instrument except Boyd he is taking a strictly
classical instrument and making it fit in a blues/jazz/rock/whatever band on
that fact alone Boyd stands out whether or not you think he is good is one
thing but give credit where credit is due.....

And on the Goose......
Where Brian and I were standing on Sat. night was right at the door where the
band went on stage and.....when they first came out I carefully stepped out of
the way to allow all members passage or what i thought was all the members.
Leroi was still lagging behind....so to get me out of the way of the door which
i was then blocking he grabbed my ass!
just a funny story i though i would relate.

Some one said Dave's New York schedule coincides with the Dead. Could that
 person
(or anyone else) please clarify when and where Dave is in NY.
 ----------------------------------------------

that's right and it's no coincidence. Coran is very thoughtful and
intelligent as a concert promoter. On Fri. the 18th of March and Sat. the
19th DMB will be playing at Schuba's in Chicago IL. Both nights?? there
are Dead shows before (at least one of the nights) the shows and should
hjave time to get from them (the Dead show) to Schuba's. you may have to
start making your way out of the show during the encore and fly out of
there so as not to get caught in the traffic that 50,000? people bring.

the Irving Plaza show in NYC is similiar. I believe the Dead play Nassua
on the 23rd,24th and 25th DMB plays on the 26th and then the Dead play
three more nights at Nassua.

again i'm not exactly sure on the Dead dates but it works something like
that. someone elaborated on the Schuba show but i couldn't dig up the
message.

can anyone else detail this more?

believe it or not as i finished talking to me friend about this i turned

that it may only be a Remember 2 things set but then thought about where
it was. since W&L is a DMB haven, hopefully Dave and the others will
realize this and just jamout. maybe a Trey thrown in there. maybe a
paige? who can say for sure but here's hoping they realize everyone at
that show (the majority) has heard the album/the songs on the album enough
already.

any other thoughts?

can almost bet on a Boyd/phish thing.

I was also wondering about the song "Best of What's Around."
Everyone seems to know the song, but the last time I saw it
performed was in early Sept. at the Floodzone. Has the band just
dumped the song? I hope not. Although it's not one of the most
jammin' songs out there, it would be nice to hear once in a while.

This is my personal favorite. I was up front in Athens a few weeks ago
screaming for it between EVERY SONG BREAK, BOTH NIGHTS, but to no avail.
Before the saturday show I even made a little sign which I put in front
of Dave's mic stand, he looked at it, looked at me, and shrugged.

Well, that sign will be showing up in front of him when they're back here
w/ the Samples in April.

that would make DMB laugh if you said that to them. (i think) there is a
misprint in the album. a few shows after the album was released they
mentioned it at a show in Trinity CT. the album says part of the album
was recorded live at The Muse in Nantucket, RI. Dave recognized the fact
that Nantucket isn't in RI and made a oke about it. funny you mentioned
RI though.

 rick thompson stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu

they are still there but.... very vaguely. Management has an account
that is subscribed to minarets, as do the designers of the album, as does
DMB's lawyer. so in reality there are three accounts somehow related to
the band directly that check out the net. but....this doesn't mean that
they actually read minarets. in fact, recently i had to make a decision
about DMB "monitering" minarets. at first, i got that Big Brother
feeling and was very skeptical. Minarets, in my mind at least, should be
a place where talk is free to move in whatever direction it moves (to
a degree...PhishNet may have taken this a little too far?) without
outside interference. i was afraid if someone was "monitering" minarets
and things came up that were somehow contrary to the band they would
intercede and "straighten things out." after discussing this (in a
roundabout way) i've assumed that whatever 'official' eyes that are out
there watching are doing so because of their pleasaure for the
band and not to moniter minarets in anyway. in any case, many of
the accounts remain unchecked for days and weeks.

they usually contact me when something comes up that i(minarets) should know
about and i get in touch with them when a question pops up on minarets that
needs an immediate answer.

paige, best, and boyd...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Tue Mar 1 11:02:32 1994

little room to think about that one. aaaaaaaaahhhhhhh.
also, the last time i saw dave play best of what's around was when
i interviewed him here at jmu (meaning i was in the same room and
he was playing my guitar...................narf). my impression is
that he's tiring just a little of the song. i'd wait until this summer
to see it again, and to the person who's really pestering him for it,
we all know that that only buggs him, and your a lot less likely
to hear it. the only time he's ever played a request for me was when
he played so much to say on 7-14-93 after a good 5 month hiatus.

nobody, and i mean nobody, on this net is going to say that dave matthews
band should kick boyd out. nobody hear really disrespects boyd, a lot of
us just think that he tends to give into a really commercial oriented
mood a lot of the time. for those of you who like the lyrics to true
reflections, more power to you. but have you _ever_ heard them jam the
song out? i haven't. (tri-poetry jams don't count, imho) but if you
go to a good seek-up or blue water it's just sickening the level to which
boyd takes it, and there are a lot of people who i can speak for when i say
we need to see more of that.

Hey, I'm respectful. I write a little sign, and put it on stage. They
haven't played to song in a while (this interview was back in the fall?).

And by the way, I know for a fact Dave DOES do this song by request. At
the Wetlands 8/19/93, some dude was screaming for it all night, and what
was the last song of the show? Yup, it was the BEST best.

It's not like I'm really pestering him-- I've seen them only four times

How come Phish at Bender cost me $20 (plus 3.50 tickmast), but Phish with DMB
costs $16? Maybe they're trying to make it up to me for paying the $9.50 at
Trax (it used to be $5).
Also, for whoever asked about the Best of What's Around, they played it at
Trax Nov.2 and 23rd. It is always nice to hear Carter's intro drum roll.
They played this all the time in '92, I don't know why they stopped; I'll
take it over One Sweet World (or True Reflections or Lover(sorry clare)

Also, could Blake please write me, I don't have your address. Maybe we can

I found that from where i was standing (above Boyd top left hanging off) Boyd's

also what more do you want Boyd to explore with everyone else in the band is
playing a blues/rock/whatever instrument except Boyd he is taking a strictly
classical instrument and making it fit in a blues/jazz/rock/whatever

Happy Thanksgiving. The day before the holiday, 1992?

The Maker
Angel From Montgomery
Desperate Hours
Dancing Nancies
People
Tripping Billies
One Sweet World
--
Halloween Song
Pay For What You Get
So Much To Say
True Reflections

ANYWAY, here are the lyrics to this version of People. Just a note on
the title, Dave announces that it's called "People" (as opposed to "People,

------------------------------------------------
Seven tumbling oceans surround the ground that I dance upon
Black and white and the rainbow, five colors in my eyes.
Seven tumbling oceans surround the ground that I dance upon
Black and white and the rainbow, five colors in my eyes.

People, People
What are we doing here
Oh, People
What have we done with things
People, People
What are we doing here
Oh, People
What have we done with things

When we fight over the oceans?
When we fight over the skies, and why?
When we fight over our borders?
Then we, our brothers and sisters deny.

Tell me why is it so cold in here.

Seven tumbling oceans surround the ground that I dance upon
Black and white and the rainbow, five colors in my eyes.
When we stand in the mother's arms, no feeling of emptiness.
When we stand in the mother's hands, we can see that
When we fight over the oceans
When we fight over the skies, and why
When we fight over our borders
Then we, our brothers and sisters deny.

Tell me why do we do it.
Why do we do it? Oh, . . .

Pretty heavy stuff, huh?

Peace, everyone.

how to undigestify minarets.net

the listproc doesn't support a command to simply undigestify the
net, so the only way to do it is to unsubscribe, and then resubscribe.
the cool thing is you can do both in the same message. just send in

unsubscribe minarets
subscribe minarets your first nameyour last name

and about 2 minutes later you will be privy to an undigestified
minarets net.
remember, the address is listproc@moose.uvm.edu, and make sure
that when you tell freinds how to subscribe that you give them this
address so that we can keep subscription messages to a minimum here
on minarets.net.

STYLE WEEKLY 28 Feb, 1994

RICHMOND RAVES by Andy Garrigue
triumphant return.

able to get their hands on a Dave Matthews Band compact disc instead of the
bootleg concert tapes they had been surviving on forever. They also knew
that one day the band would sign a major-label recording contract. THe
momentum had been building for months. With weekly shows at the Flood Zone
and Charlottesville's Trax consistently attracting more than 500 people,
how could it not happen?
"Remember Two Things" went on sale. Before the day was done, one record
store in C'ville rang up more than 1,100 copies, DMB had sold out another
Trax show and the ink was drying on a multiple-album recording contract
with RCA records. According to Big Shots Records out of Athens Ga, who
shipped 12,500 DMB discs in the first two weeks, "first-day sales of this
album were bigger than any artist outside REM and Widespread Panic."
interview, said, "I haven't seen anything like that before for an
independent release. It comfirms our belief that they're going to be big,
that they're doing to grow and grow and grow, be a career artist. And
we're going to be in it with them for the long haul."
distinctive vocals in a free-ranging melodic mix of jazz, world-beat, folk
of friends and college radio stations. There's a Dave Matthews E-net on
Internet so fans can communicate with each other. Called "minaret," after
one of Matthews' songs, it began at the University of Vermont and is solely
fan operated. According to manager Coran Capshaw, "It's traveled across at
least 28 states and to Austrailia and Canada." Capshaw estimates the
recording is now sold in 25 states, with total sales over the last three
months approaching 25,000.
performances. On Feb 24, the band makes their first performance in
Richmond since playing at the Marriot on New Year's Eve. After this show
at the Flood Zone, the band's next Richmond date is April 3, when they'll
perform on Brown's Island with Widespread Panic.
native South Africa that his sister had been murdered by her husband, who
then took his own life, orphaning their two small children. Matthews flew
there to be with his family. When Matthews returned, the tour resumed, and
two shows at a 1,000 seat venue in Athens sold out in four hours.
but there's no question about from where his emotional support has been
coming. Commenting on the band's future after bing signed by RCA, he said,
"I think our success so far has been because we've stayed together. And
the remainder of what comes in the future relies very much on us remaining
a tight unit. However we mature together in the business, or manage to
survive whatever comes to us, the main focus for me is for us to stay
together. Then everyting will take care of itself."

there you go everyone... pretty interesting facts, huh?

Gainesville show 3/1

HAUSERBT@pine.circa.ufl.edu Wed Mar 2 10:53:27 1994

Hey all,
amount of people that came out (300-400) being it was the Tuesday night
before Spring Break, AND more importantly, no CD store in town carries their
disc. It's amazing what a listing in Rolling Stone can do...Anyway it was
the second time i saw them. The first time being way back in '91 at Brown's
Island in Richmond. I was really impressed--here's the sets with a few comments to follow...

Set I
Tripping Billies
Intro-One Sweet World
Lie in Our Graves
Satellite (under 21 crowd goes nuts at beginning)
Warehouse
Recently
What Would You Say
True Reflections

Set II
Minarets
Typical Situation
Dancing Nancies
Jane
Ants
Watchtower

Halloween

The crowd was interesting, not only larger than expected but younger. But
a friend of mine in Richmond says the under 21 crowd digs Dave. There were
a couple people from up north Spring Breaking and following Dave on the way downjudging by the conversation I overheard. They were yellin for Halloween all
night. Kinda annoying...Onto the show--it was rockin and jamming, notmuch
on the mellow side. Dave even said before Xmas Song something like."We do have
a softer side, you just haven't seen it too much tonight--I guess were just
pumped to be out of the f***ing cold weather." I was a little disappointed
with Dave's vocals--he was hard to understand, but the recordings I have sound
kinda the same. I got that consensus from the friends with me. Highlights,
besides Carter the whole night, man does he go off (and sing too), were
True Reflections (about 8-9 minutes) and a rocking Watchtower, which Boyd
and Dave started off with a little picking duel. That's all I can think of
now..maybe more later. No tapers...

Peace
Brian

phish/dmb & dave's sister

SPICE@DICKINSON.EDU Wed Mar 2 14:59:20 1994

well first of all, i must have missed somewhere that bit about his sister
being murdered by her husband... that's awful. i thought it had been a car
accident. wow. that makes things even more crushing for dave... i actually
wrote a song to dave after that happened (in his "style", too -- or as best i
could manage his vocal style anyway). maybe i'll send it to him now. do
they accept mail at trax?

to be honest, as much as i hope y'all get to hear a really jammin' set with
phish, i'd bet a dollar to a donut that you'll get remember 2 things. the
band is business-minded in a very subtle way (some of you have probably
noticed this) and it makes sound financial sense to push their album. so i'm
sure they will. they have success in mind (who wouldn't, really) and dave
has already said -- jokingly, in part, i'm sure -- that he wants to make
loads and loads of money. he was kidding, but not too much. anyway, at the
moment it looks like i won't be able to catch this fantastic show with dmb/
phish/gsw in my home town but i hope everyone has a great time. just the
concept of *any* of the members of the band joining the other band is
frightening. absolutely crazy.

also, after reading the latest phish newsletter of a couple days ago, i would
assume that no taping would be allowed because lexington isn't on the list of
tapers shows? or will there just not be a taping section? god, i'd hate to
actually miss the show and then not be able to get a tape of it, too....

grumble, grumble.

take care,

Boyd Lookalike

STU_BEHORTON@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Wed Mar 2 17:46:14 1994

just sitting around watching the news when all of a sudden I saw Boyd on
tv or what I thought was Boyd. You wouldn't believe the resemblance.
He was wearing glasses very similar to Boyd's and he was wearing a
cowboy hat as well. The fellow's name was Stan Sanders (Saunders) and
he's a field reporter for the Baltimore ABC affiliate. You netters in
the area should check it out, you won't believe it.
I for one still cannot get over that Dave is opening for Phish. Doesn't
this blow anyone else's gourd? How many people open for Phish regardless
of whether or not its a local thing? Not many.
are really skyrocketing. I heard it was nine bucks at Trax last week, eight
if you're legal. This seems to be getting way out of hand especially
when you consider that for an additional $7 one can see Phish as well
granted Dave will not be playing 2+ hrs. Hopefully this will be the end of
the hikes at least for now. If not we could have another Big Head Todd on
our hands. At least BHT has an album out on a major label though not that
this is an indicator of talent or anything though.

Those damn ticket prices

budkee@unvax.union.edu Thu Mar 3 03:15:08 1994

I don't mean to shock anyone here. But both the band and the venue
are in control over ticket prices. As are the laws of supply and
demand.

The prices for a Phish show in the NE are goona be higher for a number
of reasons.
1) Phish can get the money in the NE
2) The bigger the venue, the more in production and other overhead it
costs to get the show off, so aside from the band gettign paid a lot,
the venue has to shell out a lot to pay people to work.

Now if these places thought no one would go, they wouldn't book the
bands because they would be losing a ton of money on the show. If
none of these places were willing to pay the band for shows, the band
would likely pay for less. This happens in areas where they are less
popular. ie if Phish went to Mexico right now there is a good chance
that they could not fill a place the size of the Centrum. If DMB were
to go out and play in N Dakota (not meant as a flame) ticket prices
would probably be very low and the band wouldn't make much money off
it, probably not much more than enough to survive.

The venues have to figure out some line where a rise in tickt price
will not take away too much of the audience. Quite obviously down at
Trax they are not having to drag people in off the street. They can't
stay in business taking losses. DMB costs more with their rise in
popularity and the bars have to offset that rise in cost.

Be happy that you can see them every week still (or however often it
is that they play down there.) My guess is that it won't be long
before you will be complaining that you can only see them once in a
month or less. And ticket prices will likely be higher then too.

Stay out of the snow (and no smart remarks from those of you in warmer
climates)

Lexington show

jcrother Thu Mar 3 13:26:59 1994

i've mentioned this before but i think i'll say something again cause
it's been on my mind.

at first i thought that DMB would play a Remember Two things type set
when they opened for phish. and this might be the case, who can say for
sure? BUT...when i thought about it some more i realized that the show
could easily go the other way too. think about were DMB is opening for
Phish. Lexington Virginia. W&L is one of the couple schools that started
DMB on its way. hopefully DMB will realize that almost everyone at the
Lexington show knows DMB already and has heard the album enough.
hopefully. but like i said, who can say for sure?
