Song History
On 6.3.96 at an Agents of Good Roots show, a heavily inebriated Dave was asked to come on stage and play a few tunes on Andrew Winn's guitar. One of those was this song, which fans eventually labeled "Crazy," based on the opening lyric. Crazy debuted as a feature seven months later on the Dave and Tim '97 tour, where it underwent some slight lyrical evolution and seemed to have been fully developed; however, the song was missing from the Before These Crowded Streets album and only appeared once on the Dave and Tim '99 tour, where Dave admitted to having forgotten the title. In years following that tour, it seemed as though the song had been forgotten and would never get a chance at full-band play.

That all changed in the recording studio of the 2000 Steve Lillywhite sessions, where the song was arranged for the full band and formally titled "Captain." The song was left out of the 2000 tour, however. After the Lillywhite Sessions leaked in March 2001, the song finally surfaced in the following Summer 2001 tour, first as a quick tease, then as a longer, partial version. It was finally released on Busted Stuff in 2002 with reworked lyrics, and it was played live by the full band for the first time on the day of the album's release.

When the band began playing the song in 2002, they added a second bridge and chorus section, which we label the "extended version." Performances without this note have the same arrangement as the album, even if they are longer performances due to a guest.

Until 2011, the song had only been played by the band twice since 2002 and not at all since 2004. It has been a rarity since then, finding its way into the rotation at least once every few years.
