Dave mentioned this song in a video
posted in July 2013. It debuted nearly two years later as an intro to Out of My Hands
(listed on the official dmband.com setlist as "Intro") before making its full debut on 6.12.15
In the aforementioned video, Dave says of the song: "There's a song that I'm working on now, a little piano tune. What's it called? Um... I don't know what I'm calling it. [hums verse] I think it's called 'Death on the High Seas' or something, which is a very happy-sounding title. But it's sort of all about this sort of overwhelming sense of responsibility that's inside of me, that wants to look after my kids. It's an overwhelming feeling, the feeling of what's entrusted to me by biology. And so it gets a little specific, and it reflects political ideas, and it reflects my fear of how the planet, and it reflects my fear of violence towards children and all those things that my children, my kids will face. And that's sort of what it's about. But I don't think I would have written from such a personal perspective before I had kids. I couldn't have, right?"
