Dave said in an interview on 9.15.09 that this song's lyrics came out of some "dark films" that the band had playing in the studio, including Come and See. He also mentions the films Visitor Q and Cannibal Holocaust.

Dave tweeted on 5.21.09 that "Originally 'squirm' was 'skworm' but then I wrote the lyrics and thought if I kept it 'skworm' people would think I couldn't spell 'squirm'."
