It is commonly known in the DMB community as "The Watermelon Song."As this is a folk song, it has no "official" lyrics. It was commonly taught in grammar schools and at camps in the 20th century, with many lyrical variations later in the century. Most of these variations are to remove some racially insensitive content that was present in the original versions of the song (e.g., the exaggerated African-American dialect used, the stereotype that black people cannot resist watermelon). It is likely that the lyrics Dave sings are the ones he learned as a child in whatever venue. While most versions typically have more verses than Dave's (and the "apples are sweet" verse is actually a refrain), we do not list his renditions as partials since he always sings it the same way (excepting 3.28.03). 02.04.96 live debut 13 Known Plays over 8 years 10,732 Days Since last fully played (01.20.97) 06:40 total song time Stats By Show Artist ArtistFirst ShowLast ShowAvg LengthPlay Count% Total Plays% Total ShowsDave Matthews Band6/7/19966/11/19960:28215.4%0.1%Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds2/4/19963/28/20030:311184.6%4.0% Plays By Year Slot Count By Year Song Length Over Time Slots and Types Midset13 (100.0%)partial1Longest Full Versions # LengthDateLocation10:382/13/1996Burlington, VT20:332/4/1996Davenport, IA30:321/20/1997Bloomsburg, PA40:312/8/1996East Lansing, MI50:312/9/1996Geneva, NY60:302/14/1996Waterville, ME70:302/16/1996Middlebury, VT80:292/17/1996Storrs, CT90:296/11/1996Holmdel, NJ100:282/5/1996Ames, IAShortest Full Versions # LengthDateLocation10:282/5/1996Ames, IA20:282/11/1996Amherst, MA30:286/7/1996Mansfield, MA40:292/17/1996Storrs, CT50:296/11/1996Holmdel, NJTop Segues #Song Count1» Two Step12» Angel From Montgomery1
