....laters) (1) besides the songs they cover already, what is the ideal song Dave Matthews Band should cover. What song would you love for them to cover? a funky, violin and horn based version of the Beatles' "Dear Prudence" (2) What song that they play moves you the most? Why? hmmm...Warehouse...for reasons discussed below (3) Is there any bands out there that you would like to see cover a DMB song? Flaming Lips...though i admit this band is annoying as hell on the radio, they have amazing stage presence...i guess you have to see one of their shows to understand...their cover of "Under Pressure" by Queen was spine-tingling and I think they could do justice to DMB as well (4) give me one positive thing about WWYS. Popper's solo (5) What is yor personal interpretation of warehouse? alright, this is the crux of the message...what Warehouse means to me is nowhere near the real message...however, it moves me every time i hear it because of the association it has for me. On Valentine's day of this year, i got a message from a girl that i had been interested in for a month or so. I had thought we were involved in a relationship of some sort at this point, even if it hadn't turned into anything romantic yet. Anyway, I spent the day working in a windowless lab about a mile off campus. Halfway through the day, i got e-mail from her telling me that she has a boyfriend. Oops..you would think that in knowing someone for several months, that kind of trivial thing would come out...but i guess not....anyway, that message seriously messed with my head, and i was a bundle of conflicting emotions. Should I be pissed off, supportive, annoyed, or just not care? I didn't know, and i wasn't sure what to do. I turned to my Discman to take my mind off this whole damn situation. The only CD i had with me that day was UTTAD. I concentrated on the lyrics of the whole album to take my mind off of other things. When I got to Warehouse, I seemed to form a bond with the lyrics from that song. They represented everything that I was feeling at that moment. Messed up emotions, uncertainty with change, and a deep seated conviction that no matter what happened, everything would turn out for the best in the end. If you listen to that song with those three ideas in mind, i think you can see how that song related to me that day. Since then, it has never touched me *quite* the same way, but whenever i listen to it, i can't help but remember how it helped get me through that day...it is my favorite DMB song (even though it wasn't at the time). And yeah, two months later, everything has turned out for the best. Just my personal interpretation. BTW, I think that Offspring are the most worthless band played on the radio, with Weezer coming in a close second daveTop Permalink
DMB will definitely be on ABC's in concert this weekend. It is a 30 minute show and they are sharing time with BHT and FJB - in other words Ants and WWYS. If you are in the DC area it is on Ch 7 Friday night at 1:07am (that is early Sat morning and yes I said 1:07 - go figure). Also - I put out a newbie offer earlier this week asking people to tell me how they got into DMB and what is about the music that they like. I got a High school left me with this long distance relationship, and .. well, the other half journeyed out towards Charlottesville to go to UVA. Being the whipped little shit I was, I was having quite a tough time dealing with this, so I pretended that everything was just ok; but my phonebill told me (like I said) that I was still a whipped little boy. So around swings fall break of my freshman year, I pay out of my ass for a plane ticket to go visit this little fetish of mine. The date would be around Fall of 1993. As one might expect, things didn't go so well. However, "not going so well" didn't fly with me at the time. I stormed from my girlfriend's dorm, tears of frustration collecting in my eyes, and just began to walk. My temper took me quite a distance before swarms of people slapped me out of my cold trance. In the distance I could see that these people were all filing in a little joint up ahead called TRAX. I was freezing and decided that a noisy crowd would do me some good, so I headed towards the club. Once inside, I grabbed a wall, and leaned, and thought, and waited. It was obvious that some local band was on the agenda. I didn't really care, that is until the music began. As you may have already guessed, Dave and the Boys were playing that night, and I'll tell you, whatever I had just trashed upon leaving that dormroom, I had reclaimed in listening to this brand new band for me. It was so sweet it was almost religious. Not once during that first performance of Dave did I think about anything except the music - the atmosphere, the mellowness of the crowd, it all meshed so well. Each reel or disk of DMB that I spin today still brings me back to that first performance. Dave is leagues larger now and that doesn't matter to me. What is it that I like about the music of DMB? Simply, DMB is my rock. DMB is my jazz. DMB is my gospel. DMB is my folk. It's only too sweet a combination of talent and emotion to be anything less. kinda cool, huh? to everyone else who answered the newbie offer - I tried to reply to as many of you as possible, but doing this stuff from work made it sort of hard. The five people I am making tapes for know who they are. I'll have another "digest friendly" newbie offer once I get through these tapes.Top Permalink
Hey, I'm 23 today! awesome show, anyone with copies of 2/10 or 2/11 please contact me. talking about his "Country song" and after saying country several more times, he and Boyd played a great jam I am not familiar with. I think that's a solid interpretation of the song. I've always felt that the song's message was anti-conformist... however, i did read an interview (actually done here at Duke in the Fall) where Dave alludes to a racial harmony message. In response to a question about the song's message he said something like .... "a Russian nightclub dancer is not much different than a (fill in far off land because i can't remember) scientist." the same way. Overall, the message i hear clearest is that concerning the disdain for routine and conformity. ** Of course whenever there is dialogue about interpretation of poetry, it is essential to remember that all interpretations are valid (more or less if supported...) and that just because the author makes one comment about the poem's meaning does not mean that he or she does not have other meanings in mind. This should go without saying....but people seem to be in need of qualudes around here. **Top Permalink
Hey you guys, Thanks for taking the time to read this. Several people have posted about papers that they are writing lately, and my request is similar to theirs. I am a big dmb fan, have been for several years, and while i would have liked to have written a paper on the boys this semester, the topic of my seminar is "american icons." While dmb may reach this status in the next few years, i don't think that they are quite there yet. anyway, my paper is on bob dylan, and i am looking at how dylan's image has been recycled to appeal to a new generation (i hate the term "gen x", so for the sake of argument, lets call it the "13th gen," those born between 1963-1983. so i was wondering is any dylan fans out there had thoughts on this. dylan still appeals to many of the "boomers" who were active participants in the movements of the sixties, but he also has a new audience, a generation raised on mtv. recently he appeared on "unplugged," and that album is due out in a couple of weeks. he has also been recycled in another sense, in that covers of his songs (like watchtower by our own dmb) are played frequently, and bands like counting crows and hootie allude to dylan's work in their own music. i am curious to find out what you guys think about this, and i also wonder if you think that dylan is still considered a hero. he was an unofficial spokesperson for the sixties, but are his themes applicable to our lives now? thanks for your time, if you have any random ramblings you would like to jcs3m@uva.pcmail.virginia.edu remember to eat, drink, and be merry..... jen.Top Permalink

Songs Dave should cover is a broad topic because any song he plays is amazing but I'll narrow it down to these few. . . Rock and Roll-Jane's addiction . . . Dave's voice would be perfect for this songJane Says-Jane's Addiction possibly the greatest song of all time, should be Have You ever seen the Rain-CCR, would that be nuts or what? Dark Star-GD, I'd love to see Dave Jam for 45 minutes straight, it could be Anyway. . . This is just my opinion, if you'd like to personally attack me or just respond to my ideas I'd love some input. . . Jeff's Warehouse interpretation was very cogent, but I believe that whatever personal interprtation each person has is what matters, what the author intende is not as important as what you gain from listening to the song. Warehouse to me is an allegory pertaining to tripping. . . (Not that I have ever participated in the consumption of illicit drugs, but I heard from a friend). . . "This warehouse frightens me. . . When under the influence everything seems uncertain, somewhat frightening. The black cat's changing colors. Need I say more? Alot of Dave's songs have universal meanings. What it means to me I hope it doesn't mean to you because each person should derive their own satisfaction from listening to his music. Hearing other people's interpretation is cool though. It makes you look at the same song in a whole new perspective. My ultimate point is have your own ideas, listen to other people's thoughts, and creat some sort of synergy between the two. . . I am going to begin working on Warehouse, the DMB setlist file. I am going to need everyone's help in this, as it is going to be one heck of a project. There will be errors, I am sure, but I think that complete accuracy right now is backseat to making something available. That way, people can peruse the file and suggest corrections, deletions, and additions. I am sking everyone to send me setlists. _PLEASE_ only send a setlist at this time if you know it to be correct. Later on I will be accepting "best-guesses," but for right now I am only compiling definite shows. Do not forget to include date, venue, and any other information, including notations as to if it was the first time a song is played (i.e., Dave says, "This is the first time we've played this :) and any interesting circumstances surounding the show. Do not exclude _any_ show; if you have a _complete_ setlist from a show from last week, send it to me! Hopefully, with contributions from everyone, the first version of The Warehouse will be available by early summer. Like I said, I just want to have something available that we can all debate and peruse. So, send your setlists! WOW! What an incredible show! Just not long enough. After driving back to Pensacola at 4:30 this morning and coming into work at 8 I am still in a daze, but I will try to give the most accurate set list as I can. Here is my best shot- the order may be a little off. Warehouse So Much To Say Rhyme and Reason Say Goodbye (My favorite new song) Best Of What's Around Satellite Dancing Nancies -Incredible Jimi Thing - Also unbelievable Leroi and Boyd jammed for at least 10 minutes to this song. WWYS - kind of suprised that they played this after seeing it omitted from set lists of earlier shows Ants (Encore) Halloween I was hoping to hear Granny, but So Much to Say was a nice surprise.. I have only seen dmb 3 times but Leroi played by far - much better then in my past experiences- incredible in Jimi Thing. The whole band was in a tight groove the whole way through and sounded great. The crowd was actually cool even though there were about 1,000 too many people in there and it was at least 150 degrees. I only heard one person yell for WWYS which was surprising and nice. No-one body surfed, and everybody was just grooving and singing along with Dave especially on UTTAD songs. The whole experience was great especially my front row spot :) I didn't see anybody taping the show...., but if I missed someone I would of course love to get a copy. I By the way the Boxing Ghandi's (sp?) opened and they were really good, BHT&M w as good but no Flanders Fields. If anybody wants more details about the show write me back personally. OH- Not to depress anybody, but on the way in I was offered $100 for my ticket - the old days are definitely gone. Take it Easy, TomTop Permalink

---------------------- (1) besides the songs they cover already, what is the ideal song them to cover? definitely be awesome to see Boyd play that tune. I also think that Slate by Uncle Tupelo would be a pretty schweet song for them to cover. (2) What song that they play moves you the most? Why? Personally I really love Two step. That song really gets me moving. I just love the lines "life is short but sweet for certain It's so hard to narrow down to one song though. I mean #36 at the Lexington, VA show last fall really got me dancin' and of course anytime Boyd goes into a jam such as in 'Billies, Nancies, or Warehouse I loose control of my feet (3) Is there any bands out there that you would like to see cover a DMB song? I think Uncle Tupelo could cover a Dave song fairly well. (4) give me one positive thing about WWYS. It's a pretty decent tune and has at least gotten them some recognition outside of the Southeast.Top Permalink

I have received 35 requests to be added to this tree. (anyone? please? would be *really* helpful!!) you're all free to continue to request to be added, but please do so asap and then please be patient while i sort things out. my first tree was 30 folks, and they've grown since, but this brings (in 10 trees) to nearly 1200 the total number i've organized in trees, and i think others will confirm that i may not be immediate but i will get the job done. the structure; the root should have enough copies to mail at least one each to the first level branches, and hopefully parents will copy them for their children on the way down. HOWEVER, I'm more than willing to snail mail you copies IF you send a self-addressed, stamped envelope (a tall one, vs regular height, would be nice, so i dont have to fold them for you to make them fit in the envelope) to POB 3240, Charlottesville, VA, 22903. The copies going down the tree structure are white, so that they can be more easily and clearly duplicated, but feel free to request (okay, let's keep this easy) red, blue, or green, and i can print onto any of those colors. meanwhile, the tapes are off to the root, so if you're signed up to mail blanks, be getting your parents address so you can mail theose off pronto. -- Ellis ("of Lemuria") Godard * * POB 3240, Charlottesville,VA 22903 jeg5s@virginia.edu jeg5s@faraday.clas.virginia.eduTop Permalink

Tim O'neil received this letter and i think everyone should know about this. FYI here is something you don't want to do... All, There is a computer virus that is being sent across the Internet. If you receive an e-mail message with the subject line "Good Times", DO NOT read the message, DELETE it immediately. Please read the messages below. Some miscreant is sending e-mail under the title "good times" nation-wide. If you get anything like this, DON'T DOWNLOAD THE FILE! It has a virus that rewrites your hard drive, obliterating anything on it. Please be careful and forward this mail to anyone you care about--I have. Thought you might like to know... The FCC released a warning last Wednesday concerning a matter of major importance to any regular user of the InterNet. Apparently, a new computer virus has been engineered by a user of America Online that is unparalleled in its destructive capability. Other, more well-known viruses such as Stoned, Airwolf, and Michaelangelo pale in comparison to the prospects of this newest creation by a warped mentality. What makes this virus so terrifying, said the FCC, is the fact that no program needs to be exchanged for a new computer to be infected. It can be spread through the existing e-mail systems of the InterNet. Once a computer is infected, one of several things can happen. If the computer contains a hard drive, that will most likely be destroyed. If the program is not stopped, the computer's processor will be placed in an nth-complexity infinite binary loop - which can severely damage the processor if left running that way too long. Unfortunately, most novice computer users will not realize what is happening until it is far too late. Luckily, there is one sure means of detecting what is now known as the "Good Times" virus. It always travels to new computers the same way - in a text e-mail message with the subject line reading simply "Good Times". Avoiding infection is easy once the file has been received - not reading it. The act of loading the file into the mail server's ASCII buffer causes the "Good Times" mainline program to initialize and execute. The program is highly intelligent - it will send copies of itself to everyone whose e-mail address is contained in a received-mail file or a sent- mail file, if it can find one. It will then proceed to trash the computer it is running on. The bottom line here is - if you receive a file with the subject line "Good TImes", delete it immediately! Do not read it! Rest assured that virus. Warn your friends and local system users of this newest threat to the InterNet! It could save them a lot of time and money. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D RFC 822 Headers =3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D ----- End forwarded message =87Top Permalink

They are quite possibly the best band of this decade and maybe the most talented bunch of guys ever! I cannot wait to see them is Santa Fe next weekend and if they only play for an hour I will walk away totally satisfied (of course, 2 or 3 hours would be better). It is not often Dave comes around this part of the country and this may be the only chance I will ever get to see them because I am from Alaska. I am sure as hell not going to take them for granted.Top Permalink
The first DMB show that I saw was last october(1994) in Columbia, Missouri. They played a 10$ show at a bar called th Blue Note. If anyone out there has a copy of any quality of this show PLEASE respond. I would really love to remember that night! thanx, Juan.Top Permalink

Hey there minaretters, I just have a few cents to post about, mostly about things that you all talk about. Anyway, I envy all you southern people (I live in upstate New York) because that's where the band spends most of their touring time. I keep seeing messages about drug use; I know the guys mess around, and that's fine with me. I don't think they'll be going anywhere for a while, so keep your pants on. I hadn't heard anything about heroin and whatnot, but that's definitely not cool. Hey, over the past few weeks I've come across some compujargon I just don't the hell is all this crap about spoons? And what does it mean if I digestify this mail? Anyone? Oh yeah, please don't post about Hootie and the Blowfish. Hootie can suck my blowfish. I'd like to get a hold of some Rockwell Church material if anyone has some. Doesn't Dave have the weirdest, silliest laugh you've ever heard? Is that REALLY the way he laughs all the time? One more thing, I don't think Warehouse means diddley shit, but if some of you can get something extra out of it and want to turn it into your term paper, more power to you. :-] Take it easy, all. Wow, what would a word be without spooning??? Some of you need to cuddle a bit more...spooning means to lie with someone else (guy? girl? both? depending on your preference) so that you are back to front, kinda like how spoons fit together. Got it? That is why some, in the immortal words of Clare, say "spoons to all!" Don't worry, it's a nice jesture. Before we had cool stuff like drugs and aids and moshing and European tours to talk about, we would talk about spoonin' and smurfs and how Boofy bounces when he walks, because we all saw Dave so often that it got old to talk about all of the time! But alas, I digress, HAH, some of you just weren't that lucky. Sorry, my evil side is coming out. Please disregard the previous outburst. Anyway, hope spoonin's cleared up. Also hope that those of you who want to talk about whatever da fuck you want to talk about...go right ahead. Random babble seems a bit more interesting these days anyway. Just wondering if anyone knew if Dave was planning on releasing a cd5 like "Recently" along with Ants or Jimi Thing (his next 2 singles). It would be great to have a cd version of Granny, don't you think. What other "old songs" would ya'll like to see on a cd5?Top Permalink

Howdy, music we have all come to know and cherish, but i think dave and the buoys could put together one hell of a good rendition of the brady bunch opening song. Those fake instrumentals that are on the show being replaced with Boyd Leroi, and Stefan. Dave could do justice plus a few, with Carter just blowin it away. Man that would be an awesome cover. What do you think? believe me i don't mean any insults by this, i just think it would be a good time. laterTop Permalink
Ok, I just received my first tape in which Peter plays, and I was very unimpressed. To me the whole reason that I love Dave Matthews is that the individual instuments are so easy to pick out, but with the keys they seemed to just clutter the music up. One or two songs were ok, not better, but they had a certain charm all of their own. Overall though, I would have to say that I am glad that Peter decided to stay and build his home. It's not that he's not probably the nicest guy in the world, otherwise he wouldn't have been in the band in the first place, and it's not that he doesn't play good keys, it's just that I feel the music is better off without him. Also, in the concert I heard, I believe it was 7-8-92 someone is singing a sort of harmony thing with Dave in many of the songs, and it was just bugging the absolute shit out of me. I presume that this was Peter because his whoevers voice it was it was definatly not Boyd. Oh well, just my .02 BillTop Permalink
I think that Dave and the boys are planning to release another live CD similar to recently...I talked to the A&R guy from RCA, and he said that they were taping all shows for this possibility. He said that it would be out by the end of the summer. I think that Cry Freedom would be a great song for a slow song on the cd and So Much To Say for something a little more groovin'...anyway, just my $.02Top Permalink

Oh well, just my .02 Bill Alright, I have heard dave with Peter both live and on tape, and I would have to disagree with the opinion above. I think that the music is so much fuller with Peter, my first bootleg was with Peter, and after that, I was used to the music with him. When I heard bootlegs without Peter, I was amazed at how flat it sounded at first. Now, I will agree that even before this disscussion was started I did not like the keyboard in a few songs that dave played with peter, some of the songs just didn't work. Examples being True Reflections, Angel from Montgomery, and Warehouse. However, Two Step without Peter will never be the same, I think some people know what I am talking about, two step is so much, I don't know how to say it, fuller, phatter, jammier, with Peter. just my .02 cents HosTop Permalink
Hello 'retters- Wow, what a sucky day. Why is that when you wake up late, the rest of the day is the shits? Thanks to Katherine, you all will know what I mean from now on when I speak of spoons. Who else loves spooning? Ain't it grand? Thanks to Katherine too for posting. That is one of the reasons I check my oldies. It always brightens my day to see that the oldies are still here. I guess I am a middlie, or an adolescentie, or some shit like that. Spoons to all the oldies who are still with us. Well, I think a great cover would be Orange Blossom Special. After Christmas, I was driving back to school here in the land of dave, and I had a disk in by Charlie Daniels and OBS came on. I thought to myself how cool it would be to here boyd go off on that tune. sweet. Just sitting here listening to random with phish, R2T, Shannon Worrell, live, and JP. Weird group of disks, huh? Actually, you get a cool mix. Witness--Llama--Christmas Song--My Baby--All over me. Strange, but cool. I have rambles enough now. There was some dave in there, I think. By the way, saw widespread last night. I was not impressed. I was in a weird mood last night though. That probably had something to do with it. Oh well, to all ofTop Permalink
this is supposedly still the March 17th St Patty's show right? I recall they filmed the first couple numbers, one of which was a pretty cool opening Seek Up, and --trusting shitty St. Patty's Memory now-- the other was So Much to Say. I think. Anyhow, I really hope since this is a "live" and relatively noncomercial thing, that they'll air somthing interesting. I can understand why Dave wanted to play WWYS and Ants on SNL, it makes sense... but hopefully tonite we'll get some primo live stuff. It was a really good show, if a bit drunk, tired and slow. I've seen DMB a few times in the past few weeks. I know that the band never drinks before they play, and Dave said he was going to stop drinking period. I was talking to Carter last weekend and he was telling me about their old conga player, Miguel, who died from hepatitus he contracted through IV drug use. I was at the taping of the "Ants Marching" video, and Dave took a drink of Jack Daniels between takes. It wasn't much, but he was still drinking. The night before (at the Academy show), Dave called Jack Daniels the band's "drug of choice." At the "Ants" taping, someone supposedly saw some rolling papers in with the reeds. Also, a few of us were talking to Dave, and he was talking about when he wrote a song (I can't remember which). He said he was on the beach in South Africa, and someone asked him if he was having a bad trip then, and Dave nodded. Go figure.Top Permalink
DMB fans, the University of Delaware- - - They are incredible. Lead guitar, bass, sax, violin, drums, Mmmmm... Sounds familiar. Check out this band for some great stuff. I will rot in hell for saying this, but the guy on sax was the best live sax I've heard in a while. (and no, he wasn't wasted out his mind.) Their new CD is called Open Up the Sky. ********************************************************************* "I take a drink, sit back, relax, smoke my mind make me feel better for a small time."Top Permalink

The song is Trippin' Billies, the entire story is in the FAQ so ya'all can read about it there...I think that the drug thread is pretty pointless, what the band chooses to before a show, during a show, in the studio, on the bus...whatever is up to them, let's talk about the music and on that note.... strumming the violin is so hotttttt..so let's hear what is everybody's favorite Boyd jam.... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Top Permalink

I told him i had to be sure the dubbing was as HQ as possible and he informed me that the others would be fine. Well, knowing that I was already gonna be late getting these tapes in the mail, I decided to go with what I knew was acceptable, but I was wondering if someone could tell me which tapes are acceptable to use for trades.
