(Not to start this debate again but) Personally, the tapes I have with peter far outweigh those without him. There's definitely something missing without him. That organ element in Jimi Thing, the harmonica on So Much To Say, not to mention spotlight and people people. I think his departure has greatly limited the band's versatility and confidence to play those songs live anymore. Jimi Thing could be compensated for, and as good as tunes like So Much To Say are with or without Peter, one wonders why they don't play them anymore. Keyboardists have added something to bands like WSP, Phish, and the Allman's (to name a few) that simply can't be described. Plus, it would make me shit a brick if I could go to a show and hear DMB jamming out on those old songs again. My $.02 -Styx...Top Permalink
There is no truth to the rumor that DMB would play here numerous factors are involved.... the two largest being money and I think dave is taking off around the time they want to get a band here (late late may). I also was approached last week about possibly booking a band for them, which would seem to indicate that they haven't done anything towards actually organizing a show (typical) -- Eric Budke Union College Box 241 Fax Schenectady NY 12308 518-393-8497 518-393-8400 budke@netspace.org budkee@unvax.union.edu ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Top Permalink

I couldn't think of a better way to come up with some topics of discussion with him than to ask the band's biggest fans. So please E-mail me and tell me some ideas. Thanks! Man, i'm totally excited about tonight. I can't wait to see Dave again. It seems just like yesterday, oh my bad, it was. Anyway, anyone else going? Party? I'll be that first guy in line for the general admission seats, so stop by and say, "Hey Nate, are you stoned?" or something like, "Hey Nate, Talked to Boyd AGAIN lately?" or how about, "Hey Nate, Are you taping the show tonight?" or maybe, "Hey Nate, would you like some kind bud?" or possibly "Hey Nate, Is that taping equipement I see?" or even, "Hey Nate, here is my wallet, I'm too drunk to hold on to it, will you keep it for me?" or how about "Hey Nate, here is an extra back stage pass in exchange for a copy of the show." or maybe "G'Day Nate, how's the Outback?" Or maybe, "Hey Nate, good to see a fellow minaret at the show, here is some free liquor and all my bootlegs." You get the point. But seriously, stop by and say hello, or say goodbye. I have an awesome feeling that the show is going to be incredible. What's up minaretters? DUKE I've never had a chance to post what I thought of the Duke show. Everyone has complained about the acoustics. I was able to work as an usher because of my involvement with Major Attractions (comittee who brinmgs bands), and was lucky enough to be up front. The show rocked from there (not trying to rub it in)! Nothing could ruin the band's magic, even almost being kicked out! One of the asshole show pros accused me of letting people jump over the rail and down on the floor. Anyway, I talked to a guy who recorded it on DAT and am getting copy of it. I've seen a lot of people wanting it. I'll tape it for some of ya'll if the requests don't get out of hand. Maybe some of my minaretter freinds here could help me out. WILMINGTON I decided to make the mecca to Wilmington last night at 10:30, just in time to get tickets, after being offered a ride from Olga (THANKS!!!), and it was worth the trip. Even though the set list didn't compare to what was played at Duke, it rocked to see Dave and the boys in a field in the middle of the day. The whole atmosphere rocked (well, except the hand motions to satellite)!!! Anyway, the set list has already been posted. Besides the newfound melanin in my body, the best thing I can say about today was the jams were long and kicked ass, especially on Jimi Thing. Oh yeah, talking to Carter was cool too (He knew the people I was with). I am getting a tape of this show too. Peace all and good night!!!!Top Permalink
I would not call it selling out if a band plays their hit single "too often." It is all one big marketing game, and you need to play the song that is making you money. If you wrote a book or made your first album you would want to promote the hell out of it. Who in their right mind would make an album and then never tell anyone about it, or in this case never play a song from the album. As a musician you want to make your living off what you do best, and in real life that means you need to sell sell sell. I have not talked to a musician who would not love playing gigs every night if they could, making lots of money, playing in front of full audiences, etc. The Dave Matthews Band is doing what they need to do to make it in the music business. The Grateful Dead are the last group to make it in the music business while being a complete failure in the record business. They are an anomaly, not the rule. For Dave to make it past the East coast scene he had to make a great album and have it sell! Eric DohertyTop Permalink
It was a very, *VERY* cruel joke... I was so excited I almost wet 'em... and then- it was just a tease. Very upsetting. But- I'll get over it. I think that it was a kind gesture of DMB to play that Warehouse opening. It obviously didn't help the song out tremendouly, so they must have played for none other than US. Everybody else in America wouldn't realize that they started one song and played another. They obviously did it for the hard core DMB fans like us. Just to play a little joke on us. Nobody who doesn't own DMB CDs understand what they did, only us. A message from Alex Eaton of Minneapolis, MNTop Permalink

out to RCA. When was the last time someone heard them play Spotlight or hear Boyd as lead vocalist on that song "Find some inspiration, its down deep inside of you..." You mean True Reflections? Every time that I've seen or heard them play it, Boyd has been the lead vocalist... SNL wasn't that bad. WWYS wasn't great, but Stefan was jamming out more than usual, i.e. you could tell that he was alive. Ants was expected, but was really very good for a national television performance. The Warehouse intro was one of the cooler things that they've done with the song since pre-R2T times... Someone mentioned the effects Boyd uses - it's true that Boyd used to do a lot more with his violin, Blue Water is an obvious example. He used to do crazy stuff during that song. He used to mess around with wah-wahs and other things. Of course, I wasn't there for the Blue Water that supposedly was played this year. He also used to do cool things with other songs, though right now, I can't remember specifics, maybe Halloween or Warehouse? Peter's backing on keys gave him much more liberty, as did the atmosphere at TRAX and Flood Zone. Now the band's got to perform, not as much room to experiment... AndrewTop Permalink

Best Dave Speak.......the funniest thing I've ever heard him say was on Alternative Nation, "I'm looking forward to selling out..." If we limit the discussion of best davespeak between songs....I think I like, "AWWWWW Gonna get fucked up tonight" (12/31/94) Sorta sums up everyone's feelings, ya' know ;-) I've been on this net for a few months now.....can someone please tell me what the hell a "spoon" is?!?!?! (please no stupid answers like "its an eating utencil...how the hell do you eat cerial?) As far as Dave on unplugged - its a good possibility (and I'd love to see it), but isn't DMB basicly an 'unplugged' band to begin with? SNL - I liked the Warehouse tease. Sure Warehouse would have been cooler than Ants, but go back and listen to that transistion....its soooo cool. Speaking of the Warehouse tease.....I think that Alex was right on target with his theory that that was for "us". In this space....newbie offer coming soon......ahhhh what the hell, first three newbies who tell me a cool story about how they first heard about Dave and what they love about the music get a *cool* tape. Guys and Gals, Just wondering if you have ever heard of a 70' superhero by the name of Jean-luc ponty. He was one of the first to play the electric violin. The funny story about this is that, after the HOB show, my dad e-mailed me and said, holy shit, that guy on the violin is awesome...If you like him, you'll love Jean-luc Ponty. Sure enough, I had my first listen yesterday, and Boyd must have listened to this guy. Very Blues, but the guy wailes on violin. He even plucks it just like boyd. SOooooo, if you are a fan of boyd, try to get you're hands on one of these discs, and you'll know what I'm talking about. Also, If anyone has heard of him and knows if boyd knows of him, let me know, I am interested for some odd reason. Peace, and If you're out there brew, drop me a phat line. JOEL.Top Permalink

SORRY FOR THE NON-DMB OST.... I'LL KEEP IT QUICK. Only those from Athens or have been to Athens will be likely to help. Anyway, this involves one of those shitty quirks in which you know that you know something very well, but you cannot remember it. There is this black band from Athens, Ga, they sound alot like Living Colour. They cover Public Enemy's "She watch channel zero" and they have another song that goes "Milk bone, butty crunch, butty crunch............." They have played many frat parties in Athens and 2 times at Superjam. I have been hoping that the name of this band would some how miracuously pop into my head, but it has been 3 months! now and I'm hoping that someone will alieviate this unwanted lapse of memory. PLEASE HELP! Usually it only takes a few days for something like this to pop back into your head...but 3months is ridiculous. It's no longer funny. So, PLEASE, if you know the name of this band, please EMAIL ME DIRECTLY and help me out. Thanks Alex Zendel amzendel@unca.eduTop Permalink

"Instead of a trap door, what about a trap window? The guy looks out it, and if he leans too far, he falls out. Wait. I guess that's like a regular window." --Jack Handey I've read most of the posts on SNL, but my opinion differs from most others posting on. I taped the show, hoping to hear something special that I could really enjoy. I must preface this by saying that I've been an avid DMB fan for over two years, and I am rarely critical of them. I feel this is an appropriate time. Unfortunately, their WWYS sucked--it sounded no different than the CD, without J. Popper, of course. There were no jams in it. I like the older version of WWYS, when the band members took turns on solos and Dave had a special bridge which deviated from the rest. Anyways, back to SNL. Ants was pretty good; Dave was fairly into it, Boyd jammed pretty hard, Leroi was wasted out of his mind (what's new?), but he still played great. It wasn't so much their sound as the selection. I was pissed to hear them commercialize like that. I felt as if they had their chance to show that their music went far and above what their CD indicated, but they didn't! As if their new video of Ants wasn't going to become popular on its own, Dave had to put it in there? Come on. I love DMB, but that was a bit of a cop-out. That's just my opinion. Later. To all who care, I posted a bit ago on my suspicions on the nature of the Healy affiliation with the band. Oddly I got zero in the way of converstion, I guess people were to busy writing about the crowd surfing plague. But I got some further confirmation in the form of a post on r.m.gd. I suspected Ambrosia was related, and so she is. Here go I recently spoke with Dan Healy's daughter, Ambrosia. She is the publicist for Dave Matthews Band. I asked her whether Dan Healy is doing their sound. She said that he is NOT doing their sound, but is working with their sound people on a set-up for the larger venues that DMB will be playing this summer (and probably the remainder of their career). Healy helped with the set-up for last night's SNL broadcast. He will not be doing sound for DMB, because they already have a soundman. Therefore, the Vegas question is moot. Hey, this ain't Ants... Oh wow... Wait a minute, how can they play this in four minutes?... Please, please, don't cut it... Nah, they'd never do that, so what's up?... Oh. And thought after seeing Dave and Boyd smiling and high-fiving each Wow, they are going to be huge. UTTAD is probably going to hit no. 1 now. Sure, we might have wanted to hear some other tunes, or seen a 10 minute jam. But honestly, this was major network tv, and that was not going to happen. You've got to look at what a stranger to DMB must have thought after seeing the show. I bet they were completely blown away. While we minareters might be spoiled by great tapes and shows all the time, to the uninitiated this was a hell of an introduction. How often do you see bands just go off on SNL? Uh, never. Most bands on tv gigs stick closely to the album versions, keeping it clean and mistake-free. Sometimes bands do something special when they're in the spotlight like that, but most play it safe. But the special ones people remember. And so Dave will become even bigger than before. We can walk around telling people the band now sucks, how they've sold out, and how we miss the good old Trax days, before the 12 year old kids knew the words to Cry Freedom. Or we can remember the pure joy the guys were feeling at the end of Ants on Saturday, and be happy. I can associate with you on that one. My best friend, who goes to Hollins College, roomed with Doreen (spelling?), Carter's girlfriend. In February, when Dave played on Dave Letterman, my friend and Carter's girlfriend came up for a "viewing party" at my place. Although she was acceptably polite that evening, I found her overly insecure; that is, thinking that I was just simply telling her a story of a friend of mine who was unsuccessful in hiring the band at their school, and before I could finish, she jumps in and says, "I can't pull any strings for you, if that's what you want." Hello there people of the world.... I am a recent addition to the net and love gettting all these mails every day concerning my faviorte musical group. I heard of Dave about 4 or 5 years ago. I grew up in VA. and my parents teach at Washington and Lee, one of the places dave started at Frats. I really got into him though with the release of his first album. For the longest time I would say his name and people where just like..."who??" I saw him twice last year. One of the times was at Va. Tech and I was front row staring at Boyd get totally funky. There was only about 300 people there. I also saw him later with phish and about 4,000 people but Iwas still front row. My concern in life now is will DMB just become another big name band that has no soul??? I ponder this a lot. I bet if dave returned to his same gig at Tech now it would sell out in an hour. I like that people apprectiate and like dave now but it is just wierd. Seeing him on the buzz clips on MTV (Although I haven't seen the video yet) is just wierd. I just read something that said he will be playing bigger venues this summer? How big? will the shows still r ock like they used to, will you need a telescope to see Boyd get down and dirty???? What do others feel about this???? Will the band keep there soul?? I tend to think so and that DMB will always give a great show and play great tunes....Keep on rockin. febuary. It must have rocked, Boots for the show at Club Soda in Montreal????? "Allright Alright"Top Permalink

Hey Dave. My name is Bruce, and I'm a sophomore at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. You're probably thinking, "Who the hell is this dude, and where the hell is Georgetown, TX?" Let me explain. Today started off as just one of those days. All day, I'm sure I wasn't the most energetic nor the most pleasant person to be around. By dinner, things hadn't changed much. I left the Commons (the dinning hall) to meet my girlfriend in the library. I found her sitting in a somewhat secluded section studying at a desk by herself. She said, "I sent you e-mail." After scrolling through a LONG list of recepients of some forwarded message, I came to the heading, Natural Highs. It made my day. I can't say how many times I smiled - remembering so many simple pleasures. Anyway, I saw your address at the bottom of the list and just thought I'd say thanks, for myself and for all of the people who forwarded it whom also must have thought it was pretty awesome. P.S. Hey there y'all- I never thought about Boyd and Jean-Luc in the same moment before. I can see a similarity of style in their playing though, now that its been pointed out. I pesonally don't believe that Dave and the band will sell out. With fame however comes a demand that will mean bigger venues. I myself am not a fan of many years that can claim to have seen Dave at a 300 person venue, in fact I am only a fan as of their UTTAD release. When I heard it last October, however, I loved it instantly there was no thought, I bought R2T the same week. Ironically it was my dad that bought the UTTAD album. If he considers it his however...oh well. Since then I've gotten everything I can an eagerly await each new bagby I receive. As I mentioned although I didn't ever see DMB at a 300 person venue, I did show up 2.5+hours early at the St. Louis last month to insure myself a front row seat ( or stand ). When I listen to DMB I get a feeling inside that basically makes me just want to bounce around and dance forever. It's one of the best feelings I know, and I personally believe that Dave, Stefan, Leroi, Boyd, and Carter all know that this is the reaction that the diehard fans have when they hear them play live, on tape, on cd, whatever! So, basically the point is, I don't think DMB will be selling out. They will simply be making more people all warm and tingly all over, but first and formost they will remember their true fans that love them, and care about them no matter how famous they might become. Heck even I can remember a time of telling the people in my classes about the DMB and them Saying "Who the hell are they, never heard of them." So just take it in stride, and remember those of you who have witnessed the small venues at Trax, Frat parties or wherever consider yourself blessed! few thousand, (especially if you showed up 2.5 hours early to be front row center) consider yourself lucky! And as for those of you who haven't witnessed either.......What the hell are you waiting for.........get off your butt order some damned tickets and drive your ass to the greatest concert experience you'll ever personally witness before it's to late!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Last night, the students of Haverford College, had a bit of fun and excitement. (For those of you who don't know, this is a rare occurence. One of the concert groups got the legendary blues guru/master/possibly god, Taj Mahal. He was a pretty funky guy and he can play a mean piano and guitar. He jammed on some of his original tunes and he also played Stagger Lee, which most people have heard the Dead play. To the Dave related stuff; The band that opened for him was called Rockwell Church. It is made up of two guys and they play sort of folk rock. One of the guys is a Haverford student who plays a variety of instruments. If it has strings, he can play it. The other guy goes to Princton and plays guitar and does most of the vocals. The have a pretty sweet sound. They are getting ready to release a CD, which was produced by John Alagia. Shannon Worrel sings on some of the tracks too. Look for it in a couple of weeks. Anyways, I hope everyone has a good week, the semester is almost over!!! SethTop Permalink
Hey I don't really think that Dave will sellout. He is going to play larger venues of course but I see the band being in the Phish or Blues Traveler echelon -ie have a song or two that people know or have heard and then have a small rabid following fan group. As far as I am concerned this is great. I have only been a fan of DMB for a year (ever since I heard Carter and those drums beginning Ant's Marching on R2T.) but i am what I like to say hooked- I get to see them for the first time in two weeks !!!! DMB has spread like wildfire through or group of friends here at UNM and all of us are excited. I guess that his rockin' style of groovibility is the best kind of addiction there is. Thanks Dave and all thosse other people who are responsible. -JeremyTop Permalink

well...i just got my first minaret digest, so this might be a lengthy post. first of all, someone asked who is shannon worrell and how is she related to dave? i will start out by saying that shannon is absolutely magnificent. i've seen her about 5 or 6 times this year and completely enjoyed every performance. she is a folk/alternative singer out of c'ville. she plays mainly acoustic guitar, although lately she's been playing more electric stuff. she has an independently released cd entitled "three wishes." dave sings backup on two songs, leroi plays on one of them, tim reynolds plays on a few, kristin asbury sings on a few. the album was produced by john alagia, the esteemed producer of "remember two things." basically, the gang's all there and in great form. initially, she was fairly grounded in folk music, sounding a lot like shawn colvin, but recently has been trying to get out from under that umbrella and has been experimenting with a slightly different sound. most recently, shannon, kristen, and bassist lauren hoffman joined together to form a band named monsoon and have begun touring the southeast and colorado. at the last concert i saw, on april 13, shannon announced that lauren would be leaving the group, so i'm not sure what plans they have to replace her. shannon has not yet signed a contract with a recording label, although she plans to return to the studio i think in september. rumor has it that she is being courted by several labels. i would most heartily recommend seeing shannon if she ever plays near you. i would also suggest trying out her album. you can order it from super duke music at po box 4017, charlottesville, va 22903 or calling (804) 971-4829. if you want tour information, i know it through the end of may, so e-mail me. oops, i forgot, how is she related to dave? well, besides being friends and dave singing backup on her album, shannon has sung backup for dave several times. i distinctly remember her singing "angel from montgomery" at one of the concerts i saw. i'll post the other stuff i was going to say in another post, i guess. this one has gotten kinda long. matt vanderzalm mbv4m@darwin.clas.virginia.eduTop Permalink
i hope the information about shannon was helpful. i apologize if a lot of it's been said before. as i said, i haven't subscribed to minarets until now, so i don't know what's been said. anyhow, the main reason i joined was because i wanted to expand my collection of live recordings, both of DMB and other groups. i have a if you can't use the WWW, e-mail me and i'll send you a list. i basically have a few DMB concerts, some shannon worrell stuff, and also a few tori amos bootlegs, if y'all like her. most importantly, if anyone has ANYTHING on tape from shannon worrell, let me know. i'm ESPECIALLY interested inseeing if anyone taped the january 20, 1995 shannon worrell show at crossroads (the concert hall formerly known as TRAX), because dave showed up and sang backup, including a spectacular encore of "we are the world" with dave doing a dylan sendup. i was kicking myself the entire time for not bringing a tape player. did anyone plan better than i did? e-mail me privately if you're interested in trading. thanks. matt vanderzalm mbv4m@darwin.clas.virginia.eduTop Permalink

I was talking with a friend of mine, and I heard that healy is no longer doing sound for the Grateful Dead (Is this the same Healy?) anyway...then i heard he might work in conjunction w/ DMB. What did he(Healy) do to get kicked out of the Dead scene...I've heard rumors but I'm wondering if anyone's got the real story? I saw that post on the 'rets net, so i thought this is as good a place as any to ask. spdlmtTop Permalink

....oh, Big Head Todd's over? Finally... The DMB show in Nashville was good. They only played 11 songs, I think, compared to the 17 they played in Greenville. Nevertheless, all of the songs were strong and flawless, and all of the jams, emotional. The sound was crisp and clear and Dave's voice hasn't sounded better. Warehouse opened the set. Nice. Period. You could tell that the band was having fun. When everyone was singing along to the UTTAD songs, Dave would smile and look at Carter as if to say, "This is it. This is what we've worked for." I'm happy for them. Most of the songs were played off of UTTAD. Lie in our Graves, Say Goodbye, and Recently were also played. As an encore, only one song was played. Watchtower. What Would You Say was not to be found on the list. Clem P.S.- On Ants, was it my imagination or did Dave accidentally sing the last part of the 2nd verse at the end of the 1st verse? I thought I saw him raise his eyebrows and sort of smile to acknowledge a slip.Top Permalink
The Dave Matthews Band & Big Head Todd will be on something called "In Concert" on ABC this Friday, 4/21/, from 1:10 to 1:40 AM. Thought (some of) y'all would want to know... For everyone in the piedmont section of NC, the show will be broadcast beginning at 3:06 am on Friday or actually saturday morning. I don't know why in the hell it is on at such a weird time. Oh well, I hope it rocks and Dave gets the majority of the time as opposed the other two bands. Although, if they would show the entire show that could be cool too.Top Permalink
It saddens me to think that spooning has been gone from the net for so long. And now someone snagged my old name! Why does everyone say Leroi is wasted all the time? Peace BradTop Permalink
Jean Luc Ponty still makes records. People shouldn't really talk about people they don't know. That's how rumors get started and you all know rumors aren't a good thing. People don't know what kinds of stuff happen to make someone act or respond a certain way. If something happens to your ticket and you charged it, you can usually take the remnants of the ticket and your charge statement and get a replacement. Sometimes, even the remnants will work. My tickets were stolen with my backpack at one time. TM sent me replacement tickets once I found my charge statement. klongTop Permalink
Thanks to everyone who replied to my newbie offer yesterday. I liked hearing how everyone got into Dave and what it is about the music that you really like. I got about 20 responses in one hour - I was amazed at the quick response. I have tried to write back to everyone who responded, but because I do this from work, I can't get to everyone (if I am spinning tapes for you, you already know). I ended up taking on a few additional people because they had rally cool stories. Here is one that I thought everyone on High school left me with this long distance relationship, and .. well, the other half journeyed out towards Charlottesville to go to UVA. Being the whipped little shit I was, I was having quite a tough time dealing with this, so I pretended that everything was just ok; but my phonebill told me (like I said) that I was still a whipped little boy. So around swings fall break of my freshman year, and I pay out of my ass for a plane ticket to go visit this little fetish of mine. The date would be around Fall of 1993. As one might expect, things didn't go so well. However, "not going so well" didn't fly with me at the time. I stormed from my girlfriend's dorm, tears of frustration collecting in my eyes, and just began to walk. My temper took me quite a distance before swarms of people slapped me out of my cold trance. In the distance I could see that these people were all filing in a little joint up ahead called TRAX. I was freezing and decided that a noisy crowd would do me some good, so I headed towards the club. Once inside, I grabbed a wall, and leaned, and thought, and waited. It was obvious that some local band was on the agenda. I didn't really care, that is until the music began. As you may have already guessed, Dave and the Boys were playing that night, and I'll tell you, whatever I had just trashed upon leaving that dormroom, I had reclaimed in listening to this brand new band for me. It was so sweet it was almost religious. Not once during that first performance of Dave did I think about anything except the music - the atmosphere, the mellowness of the crowd, it all meshed so well. Each reel or disk of DMB that I spin today still brings me back to that first performance. Dave is leagues larger now and that doesn't matter to me. What is it that I like about the music of DMB? Simply, DMB is my rock. DMB is my jazz. DMB is my gospel. DMB is my folk. It's only too sweet a combination of talent and emotion to be anything less. Hope y'all enjoyed that. I'll have a digest friendly tape offer in the next week or so. BTW, as most of you already know - DMB will be on ABC in concert this weekend with BHT & FJB. The show is only 30 mins so it looks like we are in for another WWYS and Ants. If you are in the DC area it is on Friday night - channel 7 and (according to the Wash Post) begins at 1:07am????? (that is actually early Sat morning). Have a good day and happy listening..... RichTop Permalink

I for one am glad to know of ANY involvement that Healy might have w/ DMB Being an avid fan of the Dead I am well aware of all the great thinngs he did for them - wal of sound, tapers section When the dead set up a seperate tapers section they paved the road for all who tape other shows Healy is an experienced sound technician and I was greatly saddened to hear of him parting from the Dead. But he can do great things for DMB as they get bigger and play larger venues I'm going to Vegas [ :-) ] and I hope that he has some imput into their sound det up there, b/c it is by far the largest venue that they have ever played and i hope Bagby isn't overwhelmed, althought I'm sure he will do a great job, as will Dave. Hoping for a DMB/Dead WATCHTOWER :) Chereo- Beau "There are 1000's of things you can eat that aren't cheese"-DMTop Permalink
Hey, The worst thing was that the sound at the spring shows was horrible. The two I saw and the reviews of the others were all unanimous in the sentiment that the sound was horrible. The levels were way too low, and the mix was very weak. Other than that, I don't know the exact date. Later, Steve P.S. SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONSTop Permalink

_________________________Reply Header_________________________ Can anyone tell me why Peter Greiser "left." Did he get booted? Did they hate him? Did he hate them? Carter Hale HALEC@tiger.hsc.edu Boy, it amazes me how much people love to assume the worst! So, to squash any rumours before they start.... No Peter did not "get booted" and nobody hates anybody. The truth is that no one really knows why he left the band, but the answer I've heard most often is that he left because he was in the middle of building a house and the touring schedule was too much. I don't know if he's in a band now or not (apparently the band plays with Peter sometimes for fun in his garage). At the Academy acoustic show someone asked about him and all Dave said was, "Peter's fine... he's still working in a bar". So that's all I know. Peace & Spoons, GavinTop Permalink
I posted this before and got encouraging responses with questions on how to access "#minaret". I am at the U of MN and go through UNIX (schell access) then type "irc". I then type "/join #minaret which will be only for people who know about this channel or stumle across it. This way we can interactively discuss dreams, basketball games, Z100 or what ever and find out info. quickly and maybe make some darn nice friends :) Trades will also be better communicated. So come on, "/join #minaret" Also, a quick question, on the back of the "LEAPING PEOPLE" shirt there are 5 symbols (check it out) apparently the five members of our favorite group. Anyone have any insight/predictions/knowledge on who each symbol represents? much like Led Z. 's symbols I believe. Just wondering?? "The future is no place to place your better days"Top Permalink

JmH wrote that Spotlight annoys him. Personally, I think that the song is really cool. It has never annoyed me and I wish that it would someday appear on a recent set list. Songs like Spotlight and People, People are cool because 1) the songs themselves are great, 2) it shows a different dimension of the band, and 3) since they weren't written by Dave, the tunes have a different sound. They were written on Piano (by Peter) and no guitar. What's wrong with that? I am all for a little variety. MarkTop Permalink
BOYD SPEAKS(well, writes)- ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Wow, oh wow, oh wow! I had a great day today. First! We attended a private taping for the Columbia Music Hour featuring Dionna Ferris and THE DAVE MATTHEWS BAND! The rep from the local radio station producing it said it would air *this* Sunday at 10:00 in Nashville. I assume that's in the evening. Check with your favorite station to see if they carry this program. The show began at 6:00 and ran exactly like you will hear. Everything was live including the intros. First, the guitarist for Dionne came out and played an acoustic number for the intro. The announcer (actually, a local personality named John Conlon) did the big spiel while a production assistant encouraged us to applaud loudly. I heard that there was going to be 75 people allowed in, but there was only about 40 people present. NO ONE checked us when we came in. Anyone could have just walked in. I got another "walk in" story later. Anyway.... DF came out and ROCKED! Dionne would be cool on the HORDE. I figured that coming from Arrested Development and riding her pop tune "I Know", she would be pretty..well..poppy. WRONG. Her band is awesome. I gonna say go see her if you get a chance. Wait til you hear her set, you'll see what I mean. When they were done, we applauded loudly, and went to a 4 minute commercial while DMB hurried out and got in place. OH SHITI almost forgot! Before this show, we were parked in the back and Boyd and Jeff(the soundman) came out to smoke a cig. We started chatting and they climbed into the van to..ah...er..have a beer...yeah. Anyway, while we were sitting there...chatting...I had Boyd type a post on my laptop. He thought it was cool that I had the computer and wanted to post something, but really didn't know what to say, and I didn't want to make any cheesy suggestions so here's what he wrote.... *****message from Boyd******************** Hey kids. Whats up. BY THE WAY THIS BOYD AND BY THE WAY i CAN'T TYPE. Just wanted to say hello and thankssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss sssssssssssasss. Didn't mean to put so many s's, the s key got stuck. Well anyway see you at a show and remember to be cool to each other. Peace. Boyd. *******message from Boyd***************** While he was typing it, my friend, a fellow netter, said "How will people know it's Boyd." and he said I'll tell them. :). That's why he did the ..THIS IS BOYD... Super nice guy. Jeff was really nice too and we almost got a soundboard, but they are not really giving out patches and there were too many people taping at the board. If we had been the only tapers, I bet we would have gotten it. We shared some kind time and then they went in to get ready. Now back to the show. DMB sat up quick and they prompted us out of the commercial time and Conlon said something to the effect of..."And now, without further delay..The Dave Matthews Band! TRIPPING BILLIES I had to get up out of my seat half way through to go to the back of the studio and dance behind this baby grand piano. TB rocked. Here's the complete list. Taping for Columbia Music Hour - 4/17/95 Javelina Studio, Nashville TN ****************************** Tripping Billies Rhyme & Reason Dancing Nancies Pay For What You Get Yes it was very awesome to have DMB play in a room not much bigger than the stage. The set was great with PFWYG being my personal fave. Can't wait to hear it again. Since I *know* that I can get a copy of this show, it'll be availible. This post is getting really long, so I'm going to wrap it up quickly here, keep up. We left there and went to Vanderbilt to hear Boxing Ghandis (who I missed, but heard from *everyone* that they were incredible), Big Head Todd And The Monsters (who wouldn't let Dave Matthews Band Memorial Gym., Vanderbilt University Nashville TN - 4/17/95 ************************ WAREHOUSE DANCING NANCIES RHYME & REASON RECENTLY LIE IN OUR GRAVES SAY GOODBYE (my FAVORITE new song) JIMI THING SO MUCH(? new to me) SATELLITE ANTS MARCHING #encore# ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER Jeff's setlist had a song called "new (sting)" before Watchtower, but we didn't get that. We did get some awesome they played Nashville (not complaining, that's perfect in my opinion) and today was tax deadline day. Last year on TaxDay we were enjoying the head splitting sounds of Blues Traveler in the very same venue. WHEN IS BLUES TRAVELER COMING BACK TO NASHVILLE?!?!?!?!? Ok...I'm outta here. I'll talk about this more. Oh YEAH! TAPES! I patched into this guys deck because he had this nice digital stereo mike that was much nicer than ours. Unfortunately he tweaked his f*#kin' levels all night. I probably shoul have just switched mikes, but I figured he'd stop after a while. I'm not even mixing them down tonight, I'm afraid to listen to them. I'll check them out tomorrow and give a report. goodnight&peace2ya mao OH yeah...my other walk in story. I was trying to hook up with Jeff at Vanderbilt because we only had balconey tickets and wanted to tape from the floor. I walked right in the back door and all the way to the stage before someone stopped me. I gave them some psycobabble about looking for the "promoter rep." (that's a good one, since there's usually a Pro. Rep. at every show) and then pointed to the sound board and headed up to it. BOOM! I was on the floor with an unused ticket to a sold-out show in my pocket. I borrowed a floor stub from this guy in front of the soundboard and went to the lobby to find Kristie and my friend Neil. I saw another friend of mine about to come through the turnstiles so I ran over to the door and told him to miracle someone with my ticket. He went back out to the front and made someones day. Cool, huh? That's all...for now ;-]Top Permalink
Don't hate me, bu I'd like to join the tree. I know it's a HUGE amount of work for the organizer, but it's for a good cause. (Aaaargh! Stop hitting me, I'll never ask for another favor again.) I'll send tapes to whoever is nearest to me (Huntsville, AL) and kiss your feet. Just send me an address and I'll find out who's closest. THANK YOU AN INCREDIBLY IMMENSE AMOUNT!Top Permalink
THE BUZZ DOCTORS (This artical appeared on the front page of the entertainment section of the Colorado Daily on April 14) Last spring, hardly anyone knew who the Dave Matthews band was. The band that opened for him was called Rockwell Church. Look for it in a couple of weeks. i saw this show. that dude from Princeton had the Dave Matthews act down PAT. straight down to the plaid baggies, white long-sleeve and random, drowsy comments. it was scary. they were a pretty solid act, though. versatile, original, but YOUNG. my friend and Wise Man Ben Booth looked at me, halfway through their set and we both said to each other, "This guy looks like Dave's love child." [shiver] Taj was Large! he was HUGE. he was buff, too. that man is a walking blues library, and he had Haverford in the palm of his hand. i'm still recovering from 'Walkin Blues'... -anyoneotherthanme ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ it's easy to forget but not =================================================== Dominic Sagolla '96 --Constantly Swarthmore College Craving Swarthmore, PA 19081 the Perfect dominic@raptor.swarthmore.edu ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Top Permalink

I just thought I'd post first of all in response to the comment of Spotlight being boring or whatever...I whole-heartedly disagree. I think that Spotlight is such a great song with Peter at the helm, and by the way, the lyrics are not blah blah blah, they actually mean something so lets not start getting negative on the lyrics. (I mean come on the FLAMING LIPS?? Vaseline??) Secondly, I asked Dave about Peter during the video shoot for Ants, and he said that Peter was doing great and bartending down in VA... So there it is, sorry to ramble...Top Permalink

area, the radio station WWWV (97.5 FM) will be broadcasting the DMB show in Nashville. It will be broadcast on Sunday at 11:00 pm. They broadcasted the show in the UVA Amphitheater and the sound came through fairly well. I taped the show off the radio and it also came out pretty well; the only tricky thing was editing out the comercials.Top Permalink

Ok, afew questions I thought might spark some interesting discussion. I don't know how original these questions will be but it's worth a shot... (1) besides the songs they cover already, what is the ideal song Dave Matthews Band should cover. What song would you love for them to cover? (2) What song that they play moves you the most? Why? (3) Is there any bands out there that you would like to see cover a DMB song? (4) give me one positive thing about WWYS. (5) What is yor personal interpretation of warehouse? You don't have to answer all these questions, just the ones you want to. I will try to keep track of the answers and give you a summary later on. one last question; this is for my radio show me and a freind do. Every week we do an unofficial poll and I thought i'd use all your opinions to! -What is the most worthless band played on the radio? Ok I will answer these questions first. #1, I think dave should cover my favorite Jerry garcia song "Reuban and Cherise." Its a great, moving love song I think Dave would do well. I also think he should try some Dylan, or maybe an old Petty tune. #2 I think Tripping Billies moves the fastest, especially during the end boyd jam. That song is just killer live, gets everyone moving. Watchtower, two step, so much to say, and halloween also get honarable mention. #3 I think the dmb is too new to be covered, but if I had it my way I would like to see Dylan sing Christmas song. #4 I have to differ with most people on this one. WWYS has always been a song i enjoy, (in fact I can't name a dmb song I don't like, thus they are my favorite band), anyways it a a moving, driving, highly accoustic tune that i like a lot. During the live times its heard in concert, they do great jams where each band member gets a cool solo, leroi, stephen, boyd, dave, and carter. An extended live "what would you say" is great. #5 i dont want to get into warehouse. maybe later. While I am writing this I'm sure many people wrote before me so i guess i'm not first anymore. oh well. Howdy all, I'm back and as promised I have a whole ton of good stuff. I'll get the tally back to you all after Thursday. first person who responds to me thru minarets to these questions gets a real nice tape... Enjoy and have fun with these.... Peace and stuff.... that's not a bad idea...i'd also like to see them do St. Stephen... -Greg ....a nowhere man from a nowhere land cupped the nowhere sand in his nowhere hand and said to no one, "Where the HELL am I?" This is in response to only one of of Daniel Beck's questions but I think it would be cool if DMB covered Uncle John's Band. Yes? No?Top Permalink
Just to throw my $.02 in, ocasionally but If Dave is bored with, Fair enough. when he said, "I know a dude with orange hair, He sucks." Sometimes I feel like a nut, Sometimes I feel like a nut.-David MatthewsTop Permalink

Lie in our graves puts me in a great mood. I don't know why but I love the song. Also, Tripping Billies is a great sit outside and slam tequilla song. It also rocks in a more normal setting. 3. Absolutely not 4. The old versions of the song, in which the band jams and Dave sings an extra set of lyrics.Top Permalink
Oh well, here's my take on last Fri. I'm drivin down the road in Greenville, comin back from lunch when I see a bunch of kids hangin out in a record store parkin lot. My mind clicks into gear and so I pull in the store walk in and ask what's up...they tell me Daveband is gonna play an acoustic set at 5, and then sign autographs...WellI'll be...so I wait around and watch the masses show up...98% were youngsters, some got dropped off by their folks, some just showed know...this is old news but anyway....finally the band shows up...I think they all expected to play, but the place only set up three mikes so Leroi stephan an d carter left..Dave and Boyd stayed...finally they let us in and well...prob... 100-150 people showed up...Dave and Boyd come out...and played Nancies, R&R, something I'd never heard (I really think it was new, but I could easily be wrong),..damn the middle of this short set eludes me,..anyway, they closed i t with the X-mas Song...someone said, "that's cool, it's good friday" Dave says ones were very well behaved throughout...I was impressed.. they actually shut up and listened. Then they finished and everybody there went crazy tryin to get Dave and Boyd to sign their instruments, shirts, flesh, ....you get the picture ....the young ones reverted back to their age... so I left. went to the show and well you've read about that...had real good points (Granny)...and bad ones (they played Satellite)....You win some, lose some...Overall it was neat seein them in front of thousands compared to the old W&L and Trax shows. Sure, I wou ld like to get up close and personal, but success has its price and its benefit s...I just wish I had their merchandising contract. Oh well, back to the law .....jim.... ************************************************************************* Jim Gilreath (803) 771-2382 Gilreath-Jim@scarolina.edu 1600 Park Circle Apt. 706 LAW0001@UNIVSCVM COLUMBIA, SC 29201 ---------------------------This space for rent--------------------------- *************************************************************************Top Permalink
