Looking for a copy of my first DMB concert

speal@gwis2.circ.gwu.edu Wed Mar 22 03:33:53 1995

Hey folks, I need a little help here. Way back in the fall semester of
'92 DMB played at the Bayou in Washington, DC. If it helps you identify
the show, I remember Miguel Valdez being there. Anyway, this was the
very first time that I got to see the band and I would love a copy of the
show if anyone has it. I only have a few tapes, but I'm willing to
trade. Please e-mail me (speal@gwis2.circ.gwu.edu) if you can help me
out. Thanks.

issue, but my friends and I got into DMB my junior year (I'm a frosh
in college now) and we were just as annoyed at the moshers and crowd
surfers we saw at concerts as everyone else. Just because you are
young doesn't mean you can't appreciate and enjoy great music.

the age thang

AHOLLAND.97@DIANA.HCHS.HUNTER.CUNY.EDU Wed Mar 22 14:27:28 1995

I just want to thank whoever it was who wrote in defending us high-
schoolers as not all being mindless teeny-boppers. I've been into
dave for about a year, so although I wasn't weaned on him like some
of you Va. people out there, I don't feel I have any right to be made
to feel like some kind of curse on the band and on the net. Yes,
there are a lot of mindless teeny-boppers out there, who see the wwys
video or just go out and buy uttad, most of them go to my school and
swear trey smiled at them during the roseland show. Of course, they
didn't know who he was, but that's them. I also have plenty of
teenage friends who aren't mindless, and who really hear the music,
they know what it means. DMB needs more younger fans who are
welcomed into the dave scene, not turned away. If things were how a
lot of you might like, so many of us would have no idea who dave or
dmb were. The music is for everyone to share. So lets do it, and
let's all scream from the minarets,

Re: Z100

SLAUFER.96@DIANA.HCHS.HUNTER.CUNY.EDU Wed Mar 22 16:10:02 1995

Liz(and everyone else too...)
Can't Get High by WSP. I also heard WWYS on Z100. Yeah...I guess you
could say they're becoming mainstream. But, I hate when people assume
a band is a sellout just because their songs get radio play. DMB,
and other bands like this, much as they may love their music, also
need to make a living. So don't fault them for becoming "mainstream"
whatever that means. I hate Z100 with a passion, but if they choose
to play DMB, then I groove right along with the music!
if you're poor, you're an underground sensation. Well, we want to be
the richest underground sensations that ever were!"(or something like
that!)

Peace,

teenybopper/moshing steroetype is getting really old. I'm in high
school, I don't go to shows to get high(that's really annoying, BTW.
There was somenoe at Roseland 2/24, who, whenever a band asked how
the audience was doing, would scream "I love drugs!!!"), and I groove
to all the music.
moshing/crowdsufring was this really drunk thirty-year old
asshole(forgive the vulgarity). It wasn't the high school kids, and
it wasn't the college kids this time.
thank whoever it was that posted that last message for pointing out
that each age group has its "bad apples".

the whole age thing and a good story.

spoon@strauss.udel.edu Wed Mar 22 16:59:54 1995

yeah I agree on most points. anyone should be able to listen to the music.
my porblem is that people are so boring and brain washed from watching
too much tv that they cant get into the music...they need flashy images
and other bullshit that caters to thier short attention span. at the
hilly show (tower theatre) if anyone noticed someone get up on stage and
get nailed by security guards after dancing for one second....it was my
brother nick....in ants marching it says "take these chances" and he
got so motivated and inspired that he busted through some of the security
guards and hopped up on stage....some poeple just cant get into the music
like others..and that sucks....but we have to deal with it.
another thing is....if people get into the music so much that they want to
throw themslves off the stage or dance like crazy wild indians thats
beatiful....i think thats getting into the music. (not that I doo that
but hey) if every one freaked out and got r4eally excited and into the
music (of course many of the songs are more mellow) but anyways if
everone did this it would be the biggest happiest party ever....kind of
like some phish shows I've been too.

I especially like the version of the song they do. Does anyone know
where that was recorded or from what concert? I really like the extended

As a reader but never a writer, I would simply like a nasty rumor I recently

is the bastion of good taste and correct info, but does anyone know the
story? I'm sure Dave hasn't led the life of Easy E, but an update on his
health would be nice... Many thanks from a long-time local listener.

Please, people, let us not get on this trend again. I have only been
on Minarets for two months or so, and in this time the discussion of
Dave's sexual orientation/HIV possibility has appeared more times
than we have ever needed to discuss (once is too much). If he does
or not should not be our concern. We needn't spread these rumors
any further. Please stop the discussions on these matters. It is
due to topics like this appearing every two weeks like clockwork that
the ones who have founded this net have been leaving. Please...

RTT, Say Goodbye, other

acox@s850.mwc.edu Wed Mar 22 19:50:36 1995

Someone answered what the two things to remember were, 1) Always remember
your mother and 2) only leave footprints (that's how I remember them at
least)...

For those of you asking whether they still play 'Just for Tonight' or
'Back to Being Friends,' the answer is yes, however the name of the song
is Say Goodbye. Played quite frequently...

And just to clear some stuff up, moshers suck, age does not matter. It's
cool if you want to get into the music, but you've got to be considerate
of those around you, which it is difficult to do if your falling on them.

Also, as far as I, or anyone else knows, Dave is not HIV positive. And
while I'm at it, I'll ask everyone to please not start a thread on
whether he is gay or not, because, no matter what rumors you may have
heard, it has never been established by us onlookers as being one way or
the other. And it shouldn't matter to us anyway. These rumors and
discussions of them will only fill our mailboxes with a lot of mail that
will not solve anything.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows whether Dave has played the song

DMB required reading

sundtde@iac.net Thu Mar 23 00:15:32 1995

Hey all, I was just browsing on the DMB web page and looking in the FTP
files and I looked at the old text files. Located there is a folder called
"Minarets History". I suggest if you all have the time you should check
them out. They hold some of the best posts I have ever read. At one time
as I understand, these type of post where the norm on minarets.(before my
time sorry to say...) Great stuff from right around the time R2T was
released. The posts give great insight, background and history about the
band.(and drunk people at UVA) It would be nice if the majority of the
post would once again follow the structure of these post, talking about the
band, music, stories and such. This is just in reaction to the recent
"rumor" posts that have once again reared their ugly head on the minarets.
If you need rumors and gossip go to the grocery store and pick up a copy of
The National Enquierer or People. Just my $.02...

On an non-DMB related note. I urge all of you go check out The Freddy
Jones Band who are on tour right now. If hear about them coming through
your town don't miss them...You will not be disapointed

Hey everybody,

of responses. I have no part in running it, but here is everything I

presented by MBA Athletes for charity. The bands listed are
Everything, Fighting Gravity, 7 Mary 3, BS&M, and Slackjaw. It is on
April 9, 1995. Tickets are $15 and on sale at all Ticketmaster
Locations.

event is succesful again like last year, it leads the way for more
events like this, which this campus (W&M) sorely needs. Lake Matoaka
is a great place ot see a show. It is a really nice looking
amphitheatre. The structure itself is pretty old which lends to
atmosphere. The lake is behind the stage. It's really a cool place.

tips, hands, then an arm; only to find that he had brain damage......

It has been a very rough time for all of us- pleas give me a couple of weeks

personal ramblings on Minarets, but I for one really miss it now that it's
gone. (Not that I mean we should go back to what happened last week when
everyone was inadvertently posting personals to the net!) Minarets used to
have a homey feel, maybe because many of us felt free to express the joy we
find through dave's music in ways more extensive and expansive than just a
review of last night's show. Just because the people have gone who
originally made minarets a home away from home doesn't mean we can't keep the
home fires burning.
answer your questions can help make us a community again.

BTW, I for one am hugely jealous of those of you out there who have seen
Damaba recently. It's been months (well, one month) since I've seen them but
it seems like years. Please dance to a tune for me at your next show. I'm
living vicariously through all of you! :)

Thanks to all who read this far. I'm not always this verbose. (really!)

Old age.

kadams@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Thu Mar 23 04:25:38 1995

Hey all.
First off I just wnated to say hello to all of you out there (especially
the old fogies like me who've been lurking so much lately, that we get
messages from people to make sure we're alive). Hobbs! You're still out
there, right? And also a great big hello to my two favorite Florida
connections (Adam and Brian). Just wanted to let you all know (whether
you want to hear or not) that as of March 16, I have been on Minarets for
a YEAR! This is not to say that newbies suck and all that, because I'm
still here aren't I? That says something all itself. I mean, I'm just
feeling nostalgic especially since I'll be graduating from W&L in the
spring and my days of frat house band parties will be over. Lessie, DMB
freshman and sophomore year, Blue Miracle every year, a little bit of
Soul Hat, Jupiter Coyote, Grapes, Jackopierce, Hootie, lots of Catfish
jenkins (these guys are way HIP!), etc.,etc., even a little Green Day (at
Zollman's a week or so before the classic 1/30/93 DMB) Yeah, wierd. I
know. Anyway, this is what posts used to be like. We didn't get mad.
People muse. It's interesting. We're all a part of something. I
happened to get in on the beginning of this one. Look around, I mean,
what random no name band is playing near you this weekend. Shit, in four
years you'll all be saying, "You know, I used to see these guys whan they
were just starting out, and now look what they've done!" It's all one
big cycle. Heh heh I'm sounding philosophical so I'll stop now. Keep
your ears open! Later all....
Katharine

Gainesville, home of the Gators, on Thursday April 13. Tickets go on sale
tomorrow (Fri 24th) and are 16.50 for UF students, and 18.50 if you're not.
Plus, don't forget, 3 crisp George's to our friend Mr. Ticket F. Bastard.
All tix are general admission,as this is a place with no seats and can hold
1500-1800 people. (Great place to see a show) Anybody need more info, e-mail
me. I'm trying to get my friend's friend's DAT/mics to tape. If I do
tape, I'll let the net know. BTW, the ad in today's student paper had a
little sentence at the bottom saying, (loosely quoted) "Dave Matthews Band
allows audio taping."

As long as we're boasting how long we've been on Minarets,(my friend
Katharine) I've been here since January of 1994. So there.... ;)-

Have a groovy day,(it's gonna be 85 and sunny here!)

The song in which they say "Hani, Hani, come and dance for me" is Number 36.

Words of Wisdom from katherine

RHOFHEIMER@CENTER.COLGATE.EDU Thu Mar 23 17:35:23 1995

In the last digest katherine (sorry don't remember your address or feel
compelled to repost parts of your message) spoke some true words of wisdom. I
only got on minarets a few months ago, but as I read through thesse weeks i
posts. grovling prevailed. infentile arguements abounded. in short (finally)
minarets did not reflect what i feel is the prevailing attitude of the music.
an attitude of joy and harmony.. .basically, the net was way too hostile
considering our common interest. Anyway katherine, and some others, have
calmly, if not somberly, posted to inform us all of this void between what we
practice and what we seem to admire. I applaud you all. We do need to mellow
out a bit. Log on, kick back, through on some tunes, get your hands on the
substance of your choice, and read some posts, read some poetry, read what your
anyof us to feel compelled to belittle, degrade or caste aspersions about
anyone. just a thought. . . disregard if needed.

On an unrelated point. . .A few weeks ago some one from U 0f R asked us all to
help devise a name for his band. I'm just curious what the final result was.
Fill me in. . .

T, sorry to hear the news. Hope your doing well otherwise. stay strong.

To whom this may concern, don't worry, it comes together when you put it in the
salad. . .

In response to Brian Lalor's questions about the filming of the WWYS
video, I thought I would share what I know. My ex-boyfriend (who goes to
Boulder) and his friends were walking in downtown Boulder last fall.
This person came out of a music hall/club-type place (sorry - don't know
the name) and asked them if they wanted to be part of the audience for a
video. When they found out it was DMB, they were like "Hell yeah!" They
went inside and filmed for awhile. He mentioned how wierd it was to
watch Dave lip-synching (I'd rather not even think about it.)... I
haven't seen the video yet, but he claims he's on it...

everyone (myself included!!) does not want to get into the Dave-HIV-gay
argument AGAIN, but if Dave has HIV and he's beginning to feel some of
its effects, as the rumors go, then this affects all of us too. Imean,
we are all concerned, not to mention that this will affect his
performance at concerts and might perhaps involve some tour date
cancellations (TOTALLY UNCONFIRMED - DON"T FREAK OUT). I think we all have
justifiable reasons to want to know the truth - so what's so wrong about that?

cypherc@cleo.bc.edu Thu Mar 23 19:41:32 1995

Erik,
Then the song is "True Reflections", good tune, seems like I haven't seen it posted in a setlist
"Angel" was originally done by John Prine, and I believe Dave has called it their "Country
Song".

Does anyone else find it odd that Dave and the boys have been playing "So Much to Say" lately,
even though Dave has said before that it lost too much after Peter left the band. IMHO the keys
in "So Much to Say" really made the song. To anyone who has heard both the version with Peter
different without the keys.

Just rambling,

Where are people getting all of this HIV crap. I just want to show what got
posted on the alt.music.dave-matthews site. (This is all speculation by some
otsider who doesn't know anything)
===========================================================
: DAVE MATTHEWS BAND TOUR DATES
: March 22 London, England
etc.. etc... etc... etc... etc...
: April 7 Durham NC; Cameron Indoor Stadium at Duke Univ.; $18.50; on sale
3/3

I think these are as good as cancelled seeing how Dave Matthews
has now been found to be HIV+. I believe he said in an interview, or a
released statement, that the DMB will fulfill their recording contract
with RCA for as many albums as it was signed for, without touring. This
just really sucks. I'm not a die-hard fan of DMB, unlike most people I
know, but I can appreciate the musical styles brought together by Dave.
He's had an important presence on just about every college campus in
America and it's going to be scary to see how people react to the news.

HIV+ and the irony of all this (READ IT)

Matthew_McClure@brown.edu Fri Mar 24 03:15:52 1995

Whoever started this vicious rumor (that's all it is and all it will ever
be unless Dave himself posts to MINARETS) is now sitting at their computer
laughing themselves silly at the commotion they've caused. By the time the
rest of us MINARETERS realized what had happened, we had a full scale
should laugh at yourselves and especially at ME, but I thought someone
should post the definitive final message on this subject. Anyone who posts
about Dave being HIV+ after this should be looked upon with scorn, unless
it is Dave himself. Furthermore, anyone who posts about HIV+ should be
ignored. If you respond, you continue the trend. Please do not respond to
this message unless it is by personal mail.

Everyone has been posting to say "SHUT THE F*** UP" and similar quips and
quotes. Don't you all see the irony in this. By posting such a message,
you are condemning yourself for the same crime. In fact, it seems that
most of the time, these messages are responses to very similar messages.
By now, you should all be laughing at me because I have hereby condemned
myself also, but I am willing to admit it.

Now that that's over, let's all just chill and enjoy the music. Remember,
DO NOT respond to this or any other message concerning whether or not Dave
is HIV+.

-Matt

Dave murmurs

j280a_5@CVAX.IPFW.INDIANA.EDU Fri Mar 24 03:37:24 1995

Hey all!
while listening really closely, I thought I heard someone (Dave presumably)
murmur something. Could someone tell me if I'm hearing things?
If he really does say something, any clues as to what it is?
Thanks in advance.

HEY!

CROBBINS@EPO.SOM.SUNYSB.Edu Fri Mar 24 04:06:13 1995

HI! I'm Jeff Robbins. This is my first day on line. I'm looking
forward to talking to some fellow minareters. It would be cool if
someone would get back to me to discuss DMB, PHISH, or any other cool
thoughts that may be running through your illustrious mind. Thanks!

If anyone has any groovy tapes for trading please give me a buzz.

Does anyone out there know when Phish and DMB will be playing
together again?

Re: DMB

appleyrd@dolphin.upenn.edu Fri Mar 24 04:42:30 1995

I didn't know this was the Freddy Jones Band net too! Hell, why don't
we just forget about Dave and post concert dates for every other band
 in existence.

THIS IS NOT THE FREDDY JONES BAND OR SHANNON WORRELL OR ANYONE ELSE
 FOR THAT MATTER DISCUSSION GROUP!!!!!!!!!!

Please watch what you post. Save bandwidth!!! Long live Dave!

Hmm. I understand that this is the DMB net, but actually I have much
appreciated learning about up and coming acts like Freddy and Shannon and
Jazz Mandolin and the list goes on by reading what people (who clearly
have some similar tastes in music) have to say here. Granted, it
shouldn't go too far, but, hey, it's better than a few months ago when
the wonders of the women on Friends were being discussed (afterall,
Chandler is much more attractive than Phoebe to me). :-). Just my $.02.

Personal note to Greg Ossi (lost your address, sorry): Thanks for the
copy of the article. Beth Cooch and I were sisters at UVa, so it's funny to
read it. Anyone know if she's still on this thing or what her e-mail address
is/was? Anyhoo...

Peace and happy hoops watching this week.

Dates in April requested

tomwa@jsbus.com Fri Mar 24 17:01:50 1995

Friends,

I am a west coast guy who will be in NC and Ohio in April,
and I'd love to catch Dave while I'm out east. I can't make it
in time for the Raligh show on the 7th, but I'd love to
hear of other shows comming up in or around MC and Ohio in April.
Any insights or pointers (A hot line number, perhaps?) would
be most appreciated.

Thanks for any insight or pointers.

Spread peace, Tom

tomwa@jsb.com

PS I enjoy hearing about other bands - I learned about DMB
on Phish Net and would not have been exposed to this great
musical experience had not the Phish netters shared their
experience of Dave. I'm sure that I will learn of other great
bands from those that can share "dave-space".

re: intelligent question II

acox@s850.mwc.edu Fri Mar 24 17:07:18 1995

Does anyone else find it odd that Dave and the boys have been playing "So Much to Say" lately,
even though Dave has said before that it lost too much after Peter left the band. IMHO the keys
in "So Much to Say" really made the song. To anyone who has heard both the version with Peter
 different without the keys.

Actually, I was incredibly surprised, yet very pleased, when I saw that
they broke out So Much to Say last month. I haven't heard a recent
version, but I have heard the song since Peter left the band. I don't
think that the song misses the keyboard as much as it misses the
harmonica intro and fills...

By the way, whoever was asking about the 2001 intro, the band used to
occasionally use it as the intro to Ants Marching - it was one of the
intros that they would play around with...

ABC Taping of March 17th show

alang@engin.umich.edu Fri Mar 24 17:09:44 1995

I found out from someone that the March 17th show in Chicago was taped by
ABC and that it will be airing on April 21st. I'm not sure exactly what
will be showed or what the content of the entire "ABC in concert" is, but
BHTM will get air time and hopefully DMB also. Anyone know anything
about this?

On another note, just a quick question to everyone... What do you guys
think of Get In Line.. reminds me of Rhyme in Reason a lot. Everytime I
listen to it, I feel like singing "until I'm dead and gone... my head
won't leave my head alone....", to me it's definitely different - set
apart from the feel of his other works, anybody got some real background
into this song?

Alex,
then send it to a new member EVERY time they subscribe. Then they won't
ask these questions over and over and over and over again. No offense Robyn,
but us old netters have heard this stuff much too much lately. Anyway, have
a good weekend. See Ya

there's a lesson to be learned here.

JPETERS@CENTER.COLGATE.EDU Fri Mar 24 20:27:01 1995

here's a question that i would like everyone of us to think about. What would
you have thought about minarets if the first time you posted someone completely
flamed you publicly for asking a "stupid question?" it happened here just
yesterday. someone new to the net asked about anne. someone who's presumably
been here for a while and who assumes to therefore have the right to scoff at
this question reprinted the question and added the subtext : "aaaaaa not
again!" or something to that effect. this is far from acceptable.
display of snobbish animosity toward a new member. every single one of us
logged on for the first time and everyone of us has to make that first post. I
implore everyone here to choke down those impulses to react. i assume the guy
who made that post thought he was being funny and those of us who have been
here for a while and have seen a lot of requests for anne's identity would get
a kick out of it. we all know this is not fair and just plain mean.
question in the first place and apologize on behalf of minarets. i don't want
robyn, or anyone to feel frightened of this net. i don't want the guy who made
fun of robyn to "get off" i just want him and anyone else out there to
understand that we need to behave in a civil manner and be nice to everyone
here. if for no other reason than the best reason of all, that dave would want
it that way. many of us know dave quite well and anyone who's ever met him
will attest that he would never act that way. even if he'd answered that same
damn question all day long, he'd smile his peaceful smile and answer it. let's
all do the same thing becuase it'll make he and the band happy. we owe them
that since what they give to us makes us happy.
about whose feeling might be hurt. i'm not asking much.
