upon hearing of the setlist-guessing going on over minarets, Dave's guitar technician said, "Well, we're gonna throw em for a loop toNIGHT!" yep. the other setlists i've seen were decieving, so... i DID see this one coming (back me up on this one, Sacker). i think the reason people were so blown away by this segue was the way Carter WHIPPED IT UP into a fat jam. his sticks were breaking left and right. ohh, i was boppin. "There's just something about bein' dead..." in the middle of this song, my friends and i all experienced the same creeping sensation... the Evil Vibe was growing. it poised itself over us like a storm cloud awaiting the power of Sacker and i disagree about whether or not this was actually a segue. i say it was, 'cause it had the whole intro-trade-off-solos thing. i think Sacker is afraid of the symbolism. ;) Dave broke a string at the end of Watchtower, and before Ants was over, my friend and confidante Charlie Mayer (who had been chatting with the guitar tech) handed me the string. i just looked at it, then looked at him, and then i realized how completely HOOKED UP Charlie is. you go boy. :) then the set was over. the crowd was stomping for more. i was totally sweet and slow. "This is our only country tune. It's a love song." i love the way Boyd tilts his head as he sings, "To believe in this livin is just a hard way to go..." Sacker says he felt this one coming in the middle of Watchtower. all i remember is thinking, as Dave screamed his head off at the stunned crowd, "Ohmygod, the Evil Vibe has slimed me." when the sound stopped and the lights came up, people wandered around in a state of awe. i never thought i'd hear such a frightening set after Friday night's jam. i later learned that Granny and Jane were cut to avoid putting the union labor crews into time-and-a-half (after twelve). can you imagine how different the show would have been with EITHER of these two songs?? thanks to the God of Backstage Passes (Charlie), Sacker and Gene and i found ourselves talking to the band in the "Lower Chamber" (as opposed to what Dave refers to as the "Upper Chamber" or "The LUV Room," into which with the show, but didn't miss the opportunity to say hi to the vanload of Swatties waiting patiently outside the theatre. i'll never forget running through the streets of Upper Darby with the two Daves (Matthews and Sacker) in our tee-shirts at 20 degrees farenheit! um, Carter told us what they plan to play on Letterman, but i'm not going to post it. if you really want to know, email me personally. i don't want to ruin the surprise. ;) i have many more stories about backstage with The Boys, but this post is too long already, so i'll sign off. ATHENS GA SUPER JAM IV show which I believe was on June 5th or 6th (somewhere around there). The show included Aquarian Rescue Unit, Widespread, etc. The show is of particular interest to me because I was there and it was an incredible show. If anyone can help me out, I would appreciate it very much. I have a large collection of many other shows, so I could trade for it. If you can help me out, email me at murdochda@urvax.urich.edu THANKS A LOT! DAVETop Permalink
i talked to Dave about playing The Maker, and he said it was just too good a song to cover on his next disc. now, if they DO release a CD of the RSO shows, he won't put it on there, but it would be fanTAStic to hear that with all those instruments. nights because the RSO only knows so many of their songs, which leads me to believe that they are learning them from the album, which kinda sucks. HOWEVER!!! this line of thinking excludes the Great Bagman from the loop. and we all know he has Powers Beyond Our Understanding. if the RSO is to know Dave Matthews Band material, you can bet Bagby will have something to do with it... well, here's to wishful thinking! -anyoneotherthanme ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ read. bike. read. listen to dave. read. eat? sleep. read. type. listen to dave. write. eat. sleep? play disc. read. bike. listen to dave. Ray & The Kosmic Krewe show in Burlington. Vt. at club toast was a sight to be seen this past Friday night 2/10. This jazz band collaboration is something. Horns and Trey Anastasio are a great thing, not to mention Jon Fishman on drums accompanying the talented drummer for Michael Ray's band. Very Kosmic. Somewhere during the first set someone pointed out Michael Gordon standing over on the side. Well you make the call. Second set Gordo joined the revelry. Even though it seemed he didn't know what was going on he made the best of it. And joined the jazzy jam. It was mind blowing to see the boys close up and personal, being that my friend joined Fishman with a beer at Club Toasts bar. Well that's Burlington for you. Just talked with Robert Jospe (drummer for TR3) and got a few bits of very interesting news. 1. New disc forthcoming called _Light Up Ahead_, due out April 1st, with a release party that night at Crossroads, Charlottesville, Virginia (296-8729 for ticket information, interviews, or directions). 2. Copies of their previous disk _Shifting Currents_ (which I very much double-especially **highly** recommend!) are available from then-producer and current bassist Pete Katz, 1416 Cherry Avenue, Charlottesville, VA, 22903. A money order for $15 will cover postage and all. That's the second-best music deal in Virginia. (The best music deal in Virginia is a TR3 show... currently only four bucks!!) 3. They'll be playing more out-of-state dates, including NYC on Feb. 24th. Not sure where, but if you're up that way, you should definitely check em out! Also, if you're in Virginia, they'll be in Blacksburg on Friday the 19th. Tree (of '90 and '93 shows) is progressing nicely; currently around 200. Information regarding both TR3 discs (in addition to setlists, member ids, etc) will be printed on the tape labels sent out with each branch tape. I was surprised to see the newsgroup thread rear its ugly head again. I agree that Minarets is getting huge and more difficult to manage. Last Friday, I checked my e-mail after not doing so for 2 days and found 6 minarets digests. I, like many others, don't feel that a newsgroup is the answer. (insert comaprisons to phish-net, etc. blah blah blah) I was wondering, however, if a newsgroup could be set up that was completely independant of Minarets. That way, if you wanted to stay on Minarets, you could. If you wanted to be on a newsgroup, you could. End of story. If this new newsgroup needed to be run with Minarets to get started, that's fine also. We could do that for a month or two, then announce a deadline at which point users could subscribe to one or the other. Then on that deadline, make Minarets and the newsgroup separate. If you were signed on through a newsgroup, you stay with the newsgroup. If you were signed on through Minarets you stay with Minarets. Does this make any sense to anyone except me? Now its possible that this is all physically impossible, in which case you should probably ignore everything I said. Furthermore, I just got tapes of 2 Gibb Droll shows (thanks Kev & Shawn). If you have not seen the Gibb Droll Band, you should. For anyone who is curious, I'll make a copy of one of these shows if you send me a blank. Send me a message with the subject "GIBB SHOW" and I'll accept the first handful of people who respond. If you have the facilities TAPE GIBB DROLL SHOWS. I know that there is no gathering for the 2/15 show, but there should be , dammit. I watched a lot of Lancelot Link as child. That probably can explain a lot... One more thing. If you are looking for a program that makes tape labels, I recommend "Box of Rain" I just downloaded it last week and am very impressed. I got it from aol, but I think you can also get it from the Berkeley Dead Site. It allows you to make labels, keep a database of your tapes, and also incorporate your labels with a database of lyrics (I think that's what it does, I haven't really figured it out yet). It's also really good about incorporating graphics into tape labels. I made up a label with a picture of DMB in the background of the song listing. If anyone is interested, if you send me a copy of a setlist for one of your favorite shows and an SASE, I'll print out a tape label for that show. Just respond to me with the subject "DMB LABELS" and I'll tell you where to send 'em. I had more to say, but I forgot what it was. Anyway, I have class in 7 minutes. - Mike Oh yeah. Ticketmaster and order me two DMB tickets for March 17 at the Aragon in Chicago on Friday morning when they went on sale. She called and asked them for Dave Matthews Band tickets, and the dumbass she talked to wouldn't sell her tickets because she said that DMB wasn't playing anywhere in Chicago on March 17. When my brother got home from school that day he went to Ticketmaster and asked them for the tickets once again, this guy told him that they were already sold out!!! I'm now in need of two tickets for that show. If anyone has any extra tickets (one or more) that they would sell me, or knows where I can get any, I'd be extrememly thankful. First, a copy of _Shifting Currents_ (did I already recommend that?) is not $15 but _$12_ (which also covers shipping), and make the check out to Katz Audio (1416 Cherry Avenue, Charlottesville, VA, 22903). Make *certain* that you give your full address. Also, send mail to that address to get on the revived TR3 mailing list; usually a postcard a month with dates, and there are coming to be more dates recently. Pete and Robert both said they'll be "getting out of the state and playing around quite a bit more." (I wonder... DMB in New York on the 24th, TR3 in New York on the 24th, DMB on Letterman on the 24th... hmm....) Also, anyone who's been to Miller's knows that it's no place to set up mics, but the show this Friday, the 17th, in Blacksburg, will be at South Main, which is an old church. A wrap-around bhere to setafety against the sea of moving bodies. Ticket price unknown, but I guess between 3 and 5. If you tape the show, I'll give you a hint of where to find their first release, _Spirits Journey_. :) Ellis -- Ellis ("of Lemuria") Godard * * POB 3240, Charlottesville,VA 22903 jeg5s@virginia.edu jeg5s@faraday.clas.virginia.eduTop Permalink

once upon a time, mr. knowitall said, All I can say is if they release another studio album that will be really cheese. It's all about live music. That was how the band started out and that is how they are meant to play! "open" discussion for the dave matthews band. quoted right out of the header. _open_ i hope they spend the next six years in the studio and produce a single with four different versions of granny on it....JUST TO PISS YOU OFF!!!!!!!!!!! oh ricky you stupid fuck... he hee hey listen, i think the real question is how long can the badn go on kidding themselves? 1. Two Step 2. Tripping Billies (yick!) 3. Recently (yick!!) 4. Granny 5. Song That Jane Likes (noooo) 7. Say Goodbye 8. One Sweet World (make it go away!!) 9. Lie In Our Graves 10.#36 the end. look it must be true, i even used capitals.. unless dave writes sumthin new this will be what happens... oh god that would just kill me... covering his own 1st album would just be postponing the inevitable;;;; the man has GOT to write some music!! it's great super awesome incredible that he has gotten out of, imnsho, this weird funk he always starts with on every tour (see UTTAD tour for an example... by the end of that he was kickin it too! of course, the roseland show was what, the 3rd show of the tour..boooo!), but 1 granny won't do ti for me... i want new. also, call me selfish, but i think it's pretty neat hearing unreleased stuff. especially with dave's audience, it always seems like such a 'fuck you' to the satellite-screamers. and crdowd surfers. and 10 (yes they're gettin younger) year old girls everywhere... nothing against 10 year old girls... just those that scream for satellite. hee hee. i'm so nonconfrontational. someone flame me, anyone except sandy & jeanfro... rick flame me for calling you a stupid fuck.. benjamin just another memo from the cellar, *-----------------------------------------------------------------------* | ben sterling... new york, ny... | | ...friendly neighborhood psychopath... | | ...professional poseur... | | ...five time mr. double dutch usa... | | ...orange tic tac connoisseur... | | | | 'plagiarize the emotion cause it's easier than the real thing' | | ...shannon worrell. | *-----------------------------------------------------------------------*Top Permalink

It's here, finally... It's the Phish Interviews Tapes, Set One (PITS1) Featuring Trey, Mike, John, Page, Tom Marshall, Dave, and others; with DJs' side comments, clips from albums, live in-studio performances, rambling phishlosophy, peculiar responses, evasive insinuations, enlightening revelations, and sparkling wit; plus in/out fillers from "The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday" (Trey's Senior Thesis in Music at Goddard College, and also called the Gamehenge Saga) and "Trey Speaks" (the Question and Answer session from the 7/5/93 National Guitar Summer Workshop, Canterbury School, New Milford, CT) With fillers, that's three tapes so far. Plus up to *five* more interviews to be added before the For a potential total of *four tapes*. ---TREE EXPLANATION If you've never been on a tree, the best thing to do is email me your name, email address, and the word BLANKS in all capital letters, go buy 4 blanks and postage, and wait until my next post (march 20). Then, when the tree structure is posted, you'll be assigned to someone who gets copies of the tapes; you send them blank tapes and return postage, they dub them for you, mail them back in a SASE you send, and all is fine. If you have good quality recording decks and other things to trade, but haven't been on a tree, you could be a LEAF. Same thing as above, but you'd swap tapes with the person above you. If you aren't sure about this, BLANKS is always a good option, and will probably mean you'll get your tapes quicker. ---SIGNUP INSTRUCTIONS I'll accept signups for this through March 15 at midnight. That's a little over four weeks, and the middle of my Spring Break. I'll post the structure by Sunday March 19. If you signup as BLANKS, have blanks and postage ready to mail out on the 20th; (ie put tapes in SASE in SE before the structure is posted); I'll personally email you the address of your parent after I post the structure of the tree. Let's pull this off before school ends in mid- to late-May! To sign up, clip the form below, or email the equivalent information *in that order*. ---SIGNUP FORM (cut here) ------ Name (first and last; nickname insufficient)? email (alternate good too)? trade or send blanks? ---if trade, is either deck dat? ---if trade, what kind of decks? ---if trade, can you do dolby? which? ---if trade, are you willing to be a parent? ------if parent, for how many leaves? do you want dolby? ---if so, A, B, C, or S? ---end of signup form (cut here)--- Thanks bookooze to everyone on the net that helped locate and transport these interviews. Let's hope we find the rest in the next few days. Carpenter Center is on 6th Street and Grace Street. Going East on 64, get off onto 195 South (that's 195, not I-95- there will be $.35 toll) and get off that onto 2nd ave...continue East on Cary until 6th street, where a left will take you up Sixth to Grace (past Main, etc...) Who taught me how to give directions...Maybe that's why no one has done this...us Richmond people don't get on the highway to go downtown and no one else knows the way to the Carp center. Anyway, that will work. Travelling from the East (ie on 64 W) or 95 N. (or south) get off at the exit that says "Downtown" This will run into Broad (you'll be on a like 12th or something, definitely higher than 6th) Take a right on Broad and then a left onto 6th when you get to it, which will again run into Grace and voila. Obviously, if someone out there that is more coherent feels like posting directions again, feel free. from the Wednesday (15th) show are going to Operation Smile, a VA based nonprofit organization that gets medical treatment and other survival type stuff to sick, often birth defected children in third world countries. They do a lot of good and it is nice to know the DMB, in the midst of the buzz clip revolution, can help those who never helped them. :) America Online". That means that only those with access to AOL will get to chat with Dave...Sept 22, 8 PM (right?) that mean they will be selling pizza at the show? Hope not. it is, but you can check in TV Guide. a cool Rusted Root mic tape and I like the crowd noise, at least during Martyr and a few others...anyone have any DMB tapes from audience mic...not that sweet soundboards aren't good enough, but it would be cool to be able to hear the crowd go "people in every direction" without turning it way up...just checking. see all at vday...this time tomorrow...hope my directions help if you have no clue...late GregTop Permalink
A friend on the College Council asked me about the possibility/procedure for getting DMB to play at our Spring Fling. Other than telling her to call Red Light and leave a message for Coran Capshaw, what advice might anyone have for me to give to her? They've got a decent amount of money to throw around, plus it coincides with Earth Day (or so she said), so there's the possibility of some sort of benefit there. It's at the end of April, so I assume they don't have any tour plans for that time yet. I'd like to get on this as soon as possible- it could be a great event, outdoors on Old Campus, a beautiful, enormous courtyard, and Dave would certainly draw a huge audience. As I see it, $10 grand is a nice gross, leaving plenty for the band after paying roadies, etc., but I have no idea what the band is pulling these days. If you have any ideas or think you might be able to help, email me privately please. Thanks. Julia Child visited my dining hall yesterday. hee hee. friendly neighborhood psycopath, i don't know what to make of your song selections for the next dmb album. i don not think he will put any R2T songs on it. what about spotlight, help myself, blue water... i would love to hear these. peace - seanyboy er... if you noticed, i put spotlgith down. blue water?!?!?! dave supposedly doesn't even 'remember' that one, so er... personally, an album blue water would spoil that song like the studio lover did... try coming up with a full album without any new tunes. why WOULDN'T he put R2T songs? in some ways it makes sense. some of those songs are just REALLY good songs. great songs. wonderful tunes. but the idea of repeating himself is just, as i said, putting off the inevitable need tow rite some more shit.. Just a quicky. Wanted to let you all know that I got my Dave T-shirt in the mail today. Very excited about that . I know you all are pleased also. Made me very happy at the speed of the BAMA RAGS people in that it only took one week for me to get it. Wish Dave had stayed with them so that He could continue to give us the small time recording studio music that made you all grow to love him so. Also, just wanted to agree with ben when he said that the unrecorded songs that Dave plays at his shows are definately one of his greatest charms. It would be no fun to hear them all on recording everywhere. And on a Down note today while eating in the dining hall at good ol' SUNY Geneseo, what was to come out of the speakers, but WWYS. I have a suggestion for anyone on America OnLine who is trying to figure out what to ask him What is he doing these days? I heard from some people it had to do with the rigors of touring, but I also heard that he left to study Buddhism in something like that in India or the Far East. So what is the real story? Also, when was the last time Dave and the Boys did "Angel" before 2/11/95 in Philly? (this is for the rest of you on Minarets, not Dave) It seems like it's been a long time since they've done it. And Saturday, at a sold-out Orpheum, the Virginia quintet shared growing chops and confidence that recalled Phish's stop there in 1992. Stefan Lessard's funk-fluid bass and Carter Beauford's explosive drums were a weird combination that worked. And in acoustic guitarist Matthews, the band had an idiosyncratic singer with the presence to lure Pearl Jam and R.E.M. fans. The group also did gorgeous, accessible songs like "Satellite" and "Typical Situation," in which Matthews sang "We'll keep the big door open, and everyone will come around" like prophetic, post-hippie sentiment. And when the band did jam, it came in ensemble surges lifted by Beauford's Billy Cobham-like dexterity - though Tinsley added spry, sawing solos. briefly before ending. Friends and fellow flannel wearers, I am in sort of a dilema. I go to the university of illinois, and I was probably one of the first people to discover dave west of the appalachians. I have managed to get all of my friends into dmb, but I am not an east coaster and don't have the connections or the money to fly out there and go to shows. In october dave was out here with rusted root (who will be playing at our party in april), but I had a test the same night down here in champaign. HE will be out here over spring break, but I will be on vacation. I am so bummed that I would almost be willing to give up my trip to cancun to stay here and see the shows. If anyone of you good hearted people could give me a hand and let me know how to get my hands on a chicago boot or the richmond show from tonight, I will gladly respond and let you know what I have to offer in return. (A closet full of flannels to start off with). but seriously, I have friends that went to the shows in october, and said that dave was going nuts because he sold out a show in chicago, a city that he loves to play to. the shows are in mid march in peoria and chicago. Someone please tape and let me know how to get it! thank you very much, and if you have any information or want to come to the party in april to see rusted root, mail me personally at jeinhorn@ux4.cso.uiuc.edu P.S. We tried to get dave for the end of aprils party, but he wanted 20,000 dollars. Hope you Yale boys have big bucks, because his agent most likely won't give you any kind of "Earth Day" discount. When Dave really started getting big, and couldn't get back to town for the Tuesday Night Series, Coran had these guys to fill in. The line-up of this band varied slightly each time, which kept it kind of interesting. Just scanned through alt.music.bootlegs. the subject read something They have a lot of shows, I mean a lot! If this person doesn't like anything on your list they'll sell you tapes at $6 a peice(that's a XLII and 1st class shipping). I don't get it. Did anyone else see this? I'm not going to say who but if you're out there I don't agree and I hope his business burns before our taping privelige(sp) does. -Dan --Anyone know where to find the My So Called Life newsgroup? Hey fellow dmb fans, for about a month now. I just bought tickets for the DMB/BHT show in Peoria on Mar. 14, and would like to get my hands on some bootlegs before, since all of you mention several songs that he plays which don't appear on his two albums. Unfortunately, I don't have much to offer in return, except for a few REM tapes, but would be more than willing to send blanks or work out some other type of deal. If anyone is interested please let me know. Chris cucr3@uxa.ecn.bgu.eduTop Permalink
