To all, Whoever mentioned that Dave should cover "Come On, Eileen," that's a great idea. Poor Kevin Rowland...wasn't he the lead singer?... the comeback that never was. As for Dave content, I got a tape in the mail that supposedly has People/People on it...does Dave still play this? And what about twinkies...do they really have a shelf life of twenty years? What's fellas? Thought I'd relay a story of an encounter with Dave my little brother had last Wed. Dave was playing at Lupo's in Prov, RI and my father wouldn't let my little bro, 14 years old, go because he had an exam the next day. So he take my bro instead to Lupo's in the afternoon to get a T-Shirt. As he walked in, Dave was doing his sound check and noticed his U Richmond hat I gave him for X-mas. He called him over and asked if he went to UR. Upon hearing that he did not and finding out that he wasn't going to go to the show, Dave offered to play a song instead. SO what does my bro ask for? ANTS!?!? I was like you moron! Anyway, Dave too thought that was a little lame so he asked again and my lil bro said that his big bro's fave Dave song, being me, is Two Step. So he played that for him. It always happens to the other guy eh? I say Dave for Prez. Also, the first Five newbies with NO DMB boots to e-mail me back with their address will get a boot of their own and the address of the others to trade between them. Whoever started that pattern was right on target. Good luck! My name is greg millington and I am interested in your offer. ps. I have a mother hips show if you are interested. just another note on the subject of cool music in cool tv shows... a few weeks back, party of five (great and underrated new show on fox) played both big head todd and blues traveler in the same episode! now i'm just waiting to hear some dave.... beth I agree with you totally on both the quality of this show, and the quality of the backgroung music used on this show. In addition to the above cool bands, I've also noticed Michael Penn (anybody remember him?), Liz Phair, Freedy Johnston, and Hootie and the Blowfish (I don't care if many of you think these guys are lame, I think theyre pretty good.) Come on Eileen was an OK tune, but do you really think Dave should cover it. I always thought the song was kinda cheezy myself.:) ChrisTop Permalink
Overnight Dave has not only been elevated to Buzz Clip status but has received Buzz Clip "Honorable Mention" in MTV's new commercials. When I heard about DaMaBa becoming a Buzz Clip, I feared it would soon be incorporated into a "Plug Into MTV" commercial. This morning about nine o'clock I actually relieved to see a new MTV commercial with Portishead and others but no Dave. However, by noon they had added a introductory sound byte of WWYS. Whether you applaud this widespread attention or not, be assured that every hour on MTV whether you are watching Sandblast or The Real World, you can receive your daily dose of Dave on MTV. Mark Crider Washington & Lee actually, this is somewhat interesting... there are TWO new ones... both are the same... with the stupid diner talka bout waitress or something, but one of them has dave, one doesn't. this is odd because all of the other videos (oasis, some other crappy bands) are the same, but dave is only in 1 of the 2. weird huh? i've never noticed that happening before... love baby.....ben just another memo from the cellar, *-----------------------------------------------------------------------* | ben sterling... new york, ny... | | ...friendly neighborhood psychopath... | | ...professional poseur... | | ...five time mr. double dutch usa... | | ...orange tic tac connoisseur... | | | | 'curious things still do occur' ...bukowski. | *-----------------------------------------------------------------------*Top Permalink

What's up net folks? I am still chillin out here with no snow, but wish to change that. I am planning to preform some type of ritualistic pagan type of snow dance to entice the clouds to cover me with that soft white shit. And as we all know any worthwhile drumbeating pagan candlighting crazy dance type thing needs a good musical soundtrack to help appease the Gods of snow. Since Dave has been bringing me such good karma as of late I figure I will use Dave's great vibes to summon my snow. But what song is the question? So if you have any ideas as to what song best goes with this kind of thing (some of you may have experience in these matters) please drop me a line. #36 comes to mind as the absolute groovyest, but does it have the crazy spirtual power I need? Or then agian 4 degrees from Tool could do wonders... Also I really need to get on the Web, how do I go about publishing my page? Anyone who can help me out on this would be greatly thanked, and I will dance for some snow for you if you want it. Peace & Out... Japhy Listen to Phish, walk around and sleep alot.Top Permalink
Hey everyone, I promise no stupid questions. I just requested the FAQ's out of fear of being flamed. I'm from Maine and I am a high school junior student/part time DJ at a local college. I have seen DMB twice in what I belive are their only two Maine appearances at the HORDE and 1/28 at Bates College in Lewiston. (If anyone knows of any other shows in Maine, I'd be curious to know where and when.) Anyway I have a tremendous hunger for DMB tapes, but I have no tapes as I have only seen the band twice, and have no cash for equipment. So if all anyone ever does is trade tapes and tapes for newbies are kept at what seems to be highly limited qualities, how the fuck is a guy like me in a state like Maine, oft-neglected by several bands, supposed to hear any of the stuff that's out there. I understand people attempting to ward off teeny-boppers/ poseurs and I suppose there's no way to prove that one is or isn't in such a medium as this, but I am a fellow DMB fan and music lover in general. The only tapes that ever get circulated in my school are Phish, the occasional Pearl Jam, and if you're damn lucky you might see ONE Allman Bros. tape. If anyone wants to help me out I'm willing to give up some of my very limited funds if that is what it takes. Or if anyone is into exposing newbies to good shit I'll pay for postage. If you've made it this far thanks for at least listening to a new voice. I always kind of liked "Come on Eileen". :) But then again, I find myself humming to those embarrasing 80's collection tapes they are always hawking on TV. If Dave wasn't into Dexy, how about a little Soft Cell "Tainted Love"? Or better yet, how about "My Shorona" by the Knack? I roller skated to that song at my fifth grade roller rink birthday party, eek! Before I get my butt flamed straight to hell, please note the sarcasm and "I'm kidding, for goddsakes!" quality embedded within this post. Although I am unfortunately serious about liking cheesy 80's music.Top Permalink

Although this post contains no DMB content, a lot of you, especially "newbie" tape-makers, might be interested in the following helpful hints. taping thing seriously, a friend of mine, whom I consider an expert tape-maker, gave me the following guidelines. I found them extremely helpful, so I decided to pass them on. This is a pretty long post, so if you don't have time to read it now, print it out or save it for later! before each tape, when recording, or every 20 hr. or so of playback. a very small particle in the wrong place is enough to seriously affect high-frequensy response, i.e. cymbals, vocal sibilance, the spaciousness of music.cleaning should be performed with power OFF, using either q-tips and denatured alcohol(90% or higher, not rubbing alcohol), or cleaning cassette available at music stores, electronic stores, and such.using q-tips, swab lightly to remove contaminants in direction of tape travel and check when complete to ensure no cotton fibers are left behind. and always when beginning a taping session. again, there are commercially available demag. cassettes for this, and no more complicated than inserting cassette, pressing play, and removing after 5 seconds. equalization requirements. many decks make this selection automatically by reading notches cut into top of cassette, but if your deck has switches on front labeled as above, they must be set to tape type being used current to be applied during recording(only) to provide flat frequency response, bias required is different for every tape, and should be adjusted to match tape being used. additionally, all tapes have differing sensitivities, and front-panel adjustments are provided on some(more expensive) decks to facilitate matching(this adjustment more important if dolby noise reduction is used). i'll get into making these adjustments shortly, but for those for whom adjustment is not possible, a close match is still possible. assemble a variety of tapes(i.e. maxell xlii, xlii-s, tdk sa, sa-x, and maxell and tdk metal tapes, if you want tones required for setup. again, some tape decks have tone generators built in, but most don't. this cd is available from mcm electronics at ph.# 1-800-543-4330, unsure of cost(also might be available through local hi-fi shop or radio shack). however, the test disc is not absolutely necessary, as i'll explain first, on a clean deck, record the 400 hz tone at meter indication of 0 db. when this is played back, it should be at the same level (0db) it was recorded, plus or minus 2 db (1 db if using dolby). if the tone is not available, record some fm radio music with peaks at approx. 0 db. when played back, the recording should be also peaking at 0 db (or whatever it was recorded at). use whatever tape gives you the closest match, and continue on. hiss, and record some of that at a level of -30 db on your tape deck's meters(no higher). then play it back, and switch back and forth between the continuing fm hiss and your recording. listen for differences, i.e., brighter or duller quality, between the source and tape.(test discs use 10 khz tone, likewise tone generators). if they're reasonably close, repeat the process with your favorite well-recorded tape or disc--if they're still fairly similar, you're done!... bear in mind that even minor differences in volume between source and tape during this comparison will always make the louder music sound better(brighter). if your source machine has output level adjustment, use it to match volume as closely as possible up by using the bias adjustment achieve as similar sound as possible, then repeat with music. on most tape decks with this adjustment, turning the knob in the minus direction will make tape brighter, plus direction to make duller, but your owner's manual should tell you what's what; follow their instructions. always use that tape and you'll be jammin'. this should be repeated every year or so, as manufacturers periodically reformulate their tapes; if the appearance of the tape you're using(i.e. outer wrapper, printing on cassette itself, shell design) changes, it's a good bet that tape itself has also changed, and should be checked. highest possible sound quality, be virtually identical to the source(disregarding tape hiss), and will also help your tape deck to last longer. for those who find tape hiss bothersome, this setup will also allow dolby noise reduction to be used without affecting frequency response. .......discussionof dolby operation follows for interested parties.... have fun!!! low-amplitude, high frequency information contained in music by approx. 10 db. during playback, low-volume high-freq. info is reduced in volume by the same amount, restoring natural frequency response to the music. tape hiss is therefore reduced by 10 db upon playback(not being present in recorded signal, it was never boosted). dolby B nr operates over a narrower range of frequencies than does dolby C, and is much less finicky. without the assistance of tone generators anf fine adjustments, i don't recommend using dolby C. sensitivity mismatch between deck and tape, primarily, and bias mismatch, to a lesser degree. if recorded signals play back at a different level than they were recorded(due to mismatch), that difference causes dolby circuits to mistrack, causing frequency response aberrations. also, any difference in signal volume introduced during the recording process is amplified by dolby circuits, leading to the belief among many that the use of dolby "cuts", or reduces high-frequency response. in fact, dolby can either cut, or boost high-freq. response, depending on whether mismatch makes for a brighter or duller tape by itself. having had much experience with properly tweaked tape decks, i can honestly say that i've never heard any dolby-relatedrecording level frequency response problems on a properly operating deck closely matched to tape being used. high as possible without saturating the tape, which occurs when more energy is applied to the tape during recording than it is capable of storing. this is especially important when dolby noise reduction is not being used, to keep tape hiss from becoming bothersome. the first signs of tape saturation are a dropoff in high-frequency signals(cymbals and such), followed by the onset of audible distortion and rough sound. this point should correspond to a meter indication of 0 db or a bit higher, but in reality is often as high as +5 db or more. an easy test of high to record is to record some clean, well-recorded music starting at peak indications of -2 db, and increasing level in increments of 2db or so every 30 seconds until recording level peaks are reaching =7 db. then play tape back, listening for the point at which tape becomes duller or distortion starts, then set levels 2-3 db below that point(more, if additional safety margin is needed). ... also, keep in mind that premium type 2 tapes(xlii-s and tdk sa-x) can be recorded at 2-3 db higher levels without saturating, and metal tapes can be recorded anywhere from 5-8 db higher than standard type 2's. benefits from recording at safely higher levels include increased signal-noise ratio (tape hiss is relatively quieter, less audible), and increased tape longevity before the inevitable deterioration of magnetic media becomes significant (your tunes tapes and can be erased to varying degrees by any magnetic fields. proper storage away from ANY possible magnetic fields is crucial to ensure tape life. an hour spent on the top of a boombox, a favorite temporary storage place for many, will cause noticeable, permanent dropouts. things to stay away from include speakers, receivers, tv's, microwave ovens, virtually anything that uses electricity, and even the areas in walls where electrical wiring is hidden. if you want to be sure, pass a compass through storage locations under consideration and check for any pointer deflection from true north---stay away from those. for the truly paranoid, magnetic shielding can be used to line your case; it's called mu-metal and can be had at elecronic supply houses. effort pays off both for years to come and every time you pop your favorite tape in ---happy listening. Let the taping begin!!!!!!!!!!!Top Permalink

Ok- drive from Burlington to Portsmouth then to Boston thru a major blizzard to see DMB. After 7 1/2 nail-biting hours in the car and not being able to see 5 ft in front of the car (now I know what "white-out" means) we made it safe and sound to Boston. Well, of course we were psyched for the show (and to be alive), but we needed a few drinks before hand to calm our nerves and numb the pain from our bleeding fingers, so we skipped Ugly Americans (not a big sacrifice) and almost didn't make it for BHT. But, we made it and actually BHT played much better than they did in Burlington!!! Or was it just the atmosphere?? The Orpheum Theatre is much more appealing to the eye and ear than Memorial Auditorium (aka gym). Anyway, the point of this post is to share my disappointment in the choice of opening songs (Seek Up). Don't get me wrong, Seek up is one of my all time favorites!!! But unfortunately, this was the third time in 4 months that I had the opportunity to see DMB and guess what?? It was the third time they had opened up with Seek up!!! Bad Luck?? Has this happened to anyone else? Am I just an ungrateful, complaining, whining fan? I mean, really.. it could have been Satellite that I heard 3 times, but it was Seek up, a song that I think really characterizes DMB and a song that I was so excited to hear the first time they opened up with it! Well, the point of this post was not to over dramatize my road trip (although I must admit, I did) and not to bitch, but to ask if anyone has had similar experiences?? And also to ask if anyone knows the setlist for 4/?/94 @ Metronone in Burlington. It was my first show so I don't remember what they opened up with but I betcha it was Seek Up!!!! I believe mouth harp might be a more British way of saying it, and harmonica may be more continental. On early Beatles releases, John is always said to play the "mouth harp". And I know he's playing a harmonica. Rusted Root was awesome the last couple of days in Santa Cruz and San Francisco. Holy Shit. Attended my first DMB show on Saturday. On Sunday I gave up on Phish. I realize they don't even come close to comparing to DMB. It was easily the best concert I have ever attended. It blew away Phish's NYE show. I liked Dave alot before the show, but not nearly as much as Phish, however, after that show my opinion has completely reversed. That was my first revalation. My second revalation was that Stefan is a god. He is simply incredible, and he's only what? 19? I went with very few expectations, but it was amazing. Hi there. I have tried calling several places without any success. Does anyone know when tickets for the chicago and St Paul shows go on sale? Would hate to miss this opportunity......thanks for your help. SuziTop Permalink
Hola, Just a few inquiries today.... Is anyone heading to the show on March 1 at Michigan State University? I also may have a few tickets availalbe for people interested . They are sixth row , so just email me if you like.... I am glad to see that party of five is getting the praise it deserves...I thought it would be cancelled like all the other good shows end up/. I also shudder to think about having DMB Unplugged. After that we will see Dave on Sandblast as the new host....Stranger things have happened. :) BTW I still have not caught a single DMB video on VH-1 or MTV. I will have to keep trying though. Peace to all and have a good day........ pk -- _____________________________________________________________________________ Patrick K. I realize that the WWYS video being on VH-1 is not really news to anyone readingthis. But I found the DJ's comments last night after the video quite Hmmm, quite a comparison... See y'all at the 2/15 show in Richmond (or is it ya'll??). Maybe I'll revert to my Yankee roots and say just say 'you guys' from now on. By the way, any fellow Washingtonians can check out Everything at the Bayou on Thursday. EricTop Permalink

I just wanted to write in and say how much I love this net. i first heard DMB at a horde show this summer, and was completely floored. I couldn't get over how good they were. Anyway, this net is great, and is much better than others I have been on. To show my appreciation right now, I have only 3 dmb tapes. I will copy them for the first 5 people to respond and who will send blanks/postage/sase. I was just hoping some people out there will help me out, since I am basically a newbie myself. Hey Kelly & others, A well done little piece. Very informative and helpful. There are several items that I think need clarification or whatever. First, I should begin by saying that what sounds good is very, very subjective. What sounds best to some people will sound like garbage to others. Fortunately, the stuff that makes a good or bad copy is pretty easy to finger. (ie anyone can pick out a tape that has too much hiss, a lot of high freq fallout, ect) When I recently bought 2 tape decks and started taking this whole taping thing seriously, a friend of mine, whom I consider an expert Just because someone has two decks doesn't mean they will always make better tapes than someone with a dubbing deck. Some of the high end dubbing decks have better specs than single well decks. tape heads also occasionally need to be demagnetized--every 50 hr. or so, and always when beginning a taping session. again, there are commercially available demag. cassettes for this, and no more complicated than inserting cassette, pressing play, and removing after 5 seconds. On a another newsgroups I heard talk of how this is a farce. Apparently, somone in the manufacturing industry came out on rec.audio.high-end and admitted that the whole demagnatization issue was a ploy. Some company advertized a new permanently demagnetized tape head. To combat this advertizing ploy several companies issued hand held demagnetizers and demagnetizing tapes. The whole thing was a set up to get people to buy things they didn't really need. After all, why would tape heads become magnetized? Sure the sound is recorded on magnetic media, but there is no way for the magnetization to "wear off" onto the tape heads. and playback equalization requirements. many decks make this selection automatically by reading notches cut into top of cassette, but if your deck has switches on front labeled as above, they must be set to tape type being used Type 1 tapes are more or less useless for tape traders (they were made for recording speach). Metaltapes do give a better frequency response and have a highersignal to noise ratio than type 2 tapes, but are also muchpricier. General concessus has always leaned toward type2's. good stuff about setting biases snipped dolby noise reduction operates by first boosting the recording level of low-amplitude, high frequency information contained in music by approx. 10 db. during playback, low-volume high-freq. info is reduced in volume by the same amount, restoring natural frequency response to the music. tape hiss is therefore reduced by 10 db upon playback(not being present in recorded signal,it was never boosted). dolby B nr operates over a narrower range of frequencies than does dolby C, and is much less finicky. without the assistance of tone generators anf fine adjustments, i don't recommend using dolby C. Comercial dolby B operates in four frequency bands centered around 1000 Hz (or is it 10000 HZ? --I can't remember) One of the biggest problems with Dolby B is that when DolbyLabs first introduced it, they were very liberal in granting rights to manufacture decks with the Dolby B feature and very loose in creating a standard that everyone had to follow. Many low end decks were made that didn't quite match the highest of standards. From what I understand dolby is being much tighter with the licensing of Dolby S. Where dolby B operates in 4 freq. bands, dolby S operates in 8 or 12 or whatever (exact number escapes me now). Then signal to noise ratio is boosted by another 2 to 5 dB over dolby B. Plus tapes recorded in dolby S can played back using dolby B (not the case for dolby C). i can honestly say that i've never heard any dolby-relatedrecording level frequency response problems on aproperly operating deck closely matched to tape being used. I'll second that. Whenever I tape something for myself, I use dolby. a couple last thoughts -- recording level should be set as high as possible without saturating the tape, which occurs when more energy is applied to the tape during recording than it is capable of storing. Saturating the tape is *bad*. The recording will sound horrible (fuzzy and muddied) tapes and can be erased to varying degrees by any magnetic fields. proper storage away from ANY possible magnetic fields is crucial to ensure tape life. an hour spent on the top of a boombox, a favorite temporary storage place for many, will cause noticeable, permanent dropouts. things to stay away from include speakers, receivers, tv's, microwave ovens, virtually anything that uses electricity, and even the areas in walls where electrical wiring is hidden. if you want to be sure, pass a compass through storage locations under consideration and check for any pointer deflection from true north---stay away from those. for the truly paranoid, magnetic shielding can be used to line your case; it's called mu-metal and can be had at elecronic supply houses. Ok, this is getting a little stupid hard. First, there are no magnetic fields setup around microwaves. (Still keep those tapes out of the micro ;-) There are magnetic feilds in speakers (actually some are shielded esp. center channel speakers for home theatre setups) and TV's and some receivers. Other electrical equipment should be fine. Electrical wires have currents going in oposite directions causing any magnetic field to cancel itself out. So go ahead and leave your tapes on your power cords. It's also AC current (if its from the wall), so that's another reason why there is no significant mag. field. this may all seem like a big pain, but the relatively small investment in effort pays off both for years to come and every time you pop your favorite tape in ---happy listening. Let the taping begin!!!!!!!!!!! As they say, YMMV. Most of what I added comes from my (not-so-good) recollection of a Stereophile Magazine article from last Oct. (I recommend this magazine to any one into good sound equip. --much, much better than Stereo Review). Oh yeah, last March's Stereo Review had a nice piece about how to make good quality tapes if you want further reading. The upcoming March issue will contain information (specs and stuff) about all available recording equipment and media. Bye, --MorganTop Permalink

I agree, i didnt mean to say that DMB should hope for a slot, i just think the concept is still a good idea, especially since DMB is basically unpluggeed anyway.... Of course i would LOVE it to see Stefan on an upright!! absolutely love it... wow... 1 week till the symphony, which reminds me... the syphony themselves are playing here on Feb 21....anyone think they might do a dave tune since they just did the shows and are a t a college or am i just thinkin too hard...? *-----------------------------------------------------------------------* |Chris "Boofy" Buford '96 7 West Preston St. Lexington Va. 24450 | |v5.1 slimmed down .sig for Ben Sterling's convenience | *-----------------------------------------------------------------------*Top Permalink

Hey! My brother forwarded your posting to me, and I'm interested in trading some DMB shows with you. I only have about four, but one of them is this really cool acoustic set that Dave played for some public radio's fundraising effort. It's just Dave and a guitar...he plays about five songs-- so it's short but sweet. The other really good one I have is of his Ann Arbor show (10/29). Maybe I'm partial to this one since I live in Ann Arbor but I still think it's an excellent show. I'm going to see DMB on 3/3 in Detroit (they're OPENING for Big Head Todd which really sucks. The tickets were $23. I'm used to seeing DMB for $5 at a local bar, and being 2 feet away from the band. oh well) Well, if you're interested...email me back. I'm really interested in trading bootlegs/info/cool stories. Tracy Sinclair tracys@umich.eduTop Permalink

hah! i'm sooooo glad that someone else saw the buzz clip commercial with dmb in it! i saw it once and then posted the news here and then every other time i've seen that damn commercial there's been no dave! there are two commercials and this is wierd, but it's good because i was beginning to think that i was hallucinating and had sounded a false alarm. i feel better, but i'm still not sure if alka-seltzer plus cold formula is a hallucinagenic...... plop, plop, fizz, fizz....oh look, it's dave on tv! 8S On the same vein, yesterday in the car I was listening to one of the better formatted radio stations in the Bay Area. After one of the songs finished they played a clip from one of Tom Petty's new songs, then said something Then they played Cowboy Song by Sting and say THEN, in the same breath, they play a clip from What Would You Say, and say And I'm thinking, that's just about the wierdest thing I've heard ever. All three of them were mentioned in the same breath as equals and as a hook for the radio station. I was very shocked. But nicely. Although I think Sting and Petty are overplayed just about wherever you go nowadays, they are less pop-like than, say, Green Day or Nirvana Unplugged's "About a Girl (?)". So, someone out there thinks they're very marketable on the West Coast. Marketable enough to rely on people recongnizing the name "Dave Matthews". Trippy. on the dolby subject ill let you decide which dolby setting you like tto record in if you decide you like dolby at all but PLEAASSEE note if the master was recorded in dolby of if you have used dolby because recording in dolby snipps off a section of the upper sound spectrum playback in dolby expands the sound spectrum back to its original size (ie : if youve recorded in dolby you would really want to know to play it back in the same dolby so that you dont have empty sound space .. i cant describe this well ..sorry) you need to note if dolby has been used because dual cassette dubing machines record EXACTLY what was on the master to the child tape no matter what you try to do to change the sound siggnals (attempts to boost singnals on a dual cassette (unless the industry has made changes in the past year and half) doesnt work ... this is one of the benefits of having to singal decks, you have a stronger ability to change the sound signals from the master to the reocording) dubbed your tapes so that future listeners can play it back and get the strongest fullest possible sound hmm maybe illl go play with my conga drum that the cat just knocked over beat on drums catherine ****************************************************************************** If you want to get a sure crop with a big yield, sow wild oats. ******************************************************************************Top Permalink

hi all i know this is the dmb net, but if you don't like edwin mccain, please do not read further, if so please read on edwin is from south carolina, greenville to be exact and his music is somewhat similar to dave's. he is very cool and the words he speaks in his music are moving to say the least. everyone in his band is super nice and so is he. i interviewed him last semester for my college radio station and he totally hung out and partied(drinks). he rarely smokes marijuana and has never taken acid. this he told me last week, but i had already knew. maybe it's irrelevant but i don't care. every once in a while he'll do some seal tunes or an occassional police tune. he loves sting and has written a lot of new music and really changed up his setlist since last i saw of him. gotta go, i have class. ps tonight the samples ziggy's winston-salem, nc. -bruce rickerTop Permalink

to clarify what im askin here..... i know for a fact... 3-6-93 R&R full band.....funky version im talking about 7-14 or 21-93 R&R solo-he did this alot this summer spring horse center R&R as on UTTAD im trying to see if a tape labled april 94 is correct cuz it has the version like on 3-6-93 i'm pretty sure that the modern version of the song made its debut about a week before lexington. in fact, i'd say that lexington is the second time they played it the way they do now, but i can't really remember. i do know it was mentioned on the net at the time. the most recent version of the old version i have (painful clause) is 11-2-93, which, i might add, is the first time he ever played say goodbye for the c-ville audience. ____________________________________ "it is indeed a great gift of heaven\____________________________________ __________________________________ \_________________________________Top Permalink

Hello phellow Minaretters! Im a newbie on the DMB.Net. This is my first post, and Ive been reading it for about 2 months. I just went to my first Dave show at the Orpheum 2/4/94. All I can say is "WOW." This was by far the best non-Phish show Ive ever been to. It actually even compared to the Phish shows. I was suprised to see a huge abundance of 14 or 15 year old girls. They were all over the place. My two friends and I were in the first row balcony so we had a ton of room to groove. I was suprised to see that it seemed like we were the only people dancing for Ugly American and BHT. The crowd loosened up about halfway through dave. If anybody had a HQ tape of this show, please email me. I brought a hand help taper so i have a really poor tape of it, but i missed ants and tripping billies. Before I go just a few questions. Did anyone else get asked by young girls if they had pot? About 10 or 15 girls came up to us asking us in a high voice "Hi..do u have pot?" They must have figured college-aged boys that are into the music..they must have drugs. Also, did anyone else see Messy Boy at the show. There was the once kid that just ran all over the theatre tripping on his face. Well, this is my first post, and I hope you all like it. MikeTop Permalink
(just thought yall'd like to know...) sometimes you have one of those days where you can't quite figure out what's eating at your psyche. and then, after molling over your manic depressive state for a few hours, you finally start to come into focus and you think you're ina good mood, but only to fall down a flight of stairs. literally. sunday night in an effort to finish up my laundry, i fell into my basement. not something many people here can claim they've done, i'm sure. and you know what profound revelation i had as i sat there bleeding to death all over my dave matthews shirt? "i need to get my clothes into the dryer." i'm debating whether i should wash the shirt before wearing it to the symphony show on tuesday. what does y'all think? ____________________________________ "it is indeed a great gift of heaven\____________________________________ __________________________________ \_________________________________ "that didn't hurt...that didn't \ rick thompson hurt...that didn't hurt........ \ stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu ........................that hurt." \____________________________________Top Permalink
I know this whole R&R thing was about Boofy trying to get a show dated, but I have a li'l sumpthin' to throw out. Every copy of R&R I have (pre-spring 94) has different lyrics, infact the entire meaning of the song is changed. I don't mean a word or two different, I'm talkin' totally different lyrics. So the whole band playing isn't the only change. Incidentally, even DURING early april 94 Dave was playing w/ the R&R lyrics. There's a great version with the character having a majorly mess-up paranoid personality. Interesting, and a nice break from all that 'needle to the vain' shit he sings now. Of course, in 93 before the song was brought back it had very different lyrics altogether-- "what you do on your time," etc. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------Top Permalink

I don't think this got through yesterday, if it did I'm sorry. i need the set list for the 2-5-94 DaMaBa show at the Georgia Theatre in Athens. Also if anyone know which songs were recorded during the Rudabegga (sp?) sessions can you please let me know. I think I might have it as filler and was wonderin if I had the whole thing or not... Thanks to anyone that could help. Anyone that is in on my newbie offer. I only got four packages of tapes so far and I got them out the same day they came. Also I fucked up one of the e-mail addresses in the list I sent you. I will contact you all later today or tomorrow as to the correction. In the mean time get those tapes in to me and I will get them back to you within a few days. Contact one another and start trading. I figured it out so all of you will get a different show of A- or better quality. I am not going to give any of you guys the 7-30-94 Browns Island show because I know many of you are on that tree. Eric..I lied, never played soccer..give me a week, then I will be able to set you up with some c.bad artillery....hahaha..is the world ready for us? marianne are you back yet?.. columbia netters lets get together.. columbia ben ..nice article in the spec..minarets mentioning.. i feel like eric posting personals to the net what's up with the warehouse? It seems like whenever I send a message out to try to get the information about the Edwin McCain Net, I get a message saying user unknown from my server. If someone could post the info to the net, or get ahold of me personally I would appreciate it very much. Thanks a lot. Waiting eagerly for Lafayette the 25th............ Hey All, purchased a few tickets too many. I am offering 3 tickets to the first people who contact me. Oh, on the night before the show, Penn State is playing Michigan in hoops and we can go to the game for practically nothing if my friend gets the word soon enough. Some of these may be old, but I've been away awhile so here goes... Dave sighting number 1... Over Christmas I was up in New York and I saw a commercial for the Wiz (a cross between Circuit City and Blockbuster Music). They were advertising UTTAD and showing a clip of Tripping Billies. They showed about 30 seconds of it. I was nly able to here bits and pieces of the song because of the voice over plugging the album. Has anybody seen the entire video? There is a video to Tripping Billies too??? !!! ??? i believe this was probably just the promotional video that they did a while back... tanen maybe knows more about this than i do... anyway, whoever saw it... it was all live, right? then it was probably the promo. hey shit i live in new york and i haven't seen that ad yet... I don't live in NY either but I think I know what is being referred to. When the album first came out I went to a listening party hosted by the label (BMG I think) and they showed a live video of tripping billies. I should have asked if I could keep it, since none of the bastards that were there knew nothing about DMB. Well, anyway it was fantastic.Top Permalink
oddly enough, i had just finished reading minarets when i turn mtv on, 8 pm tuesday, and you know what was playing... not only scary, but sort of sad... because i can see this becoming a bad bad bad bad thing... i don't care what you call me, but actually seeing the video being played at night on mtv is just shitty. at least i don't think bill bellamy has said his name yet... ben p.s.... the next song was 'i'll make love to you'. boyz ii men in the houuuse... ugh just another memo from the cellar, *-----------------------------------------------------------------------* | ben sterling... new york, ny... | | ...friendly neighborhood psychopath... | | ...professional poseur... | | ...five time mr. double dutch usa... | | ...orange tic tac connoisseur... | | | | 'plagiarize the emotion cause it's easier than the real thing' | | ...shannon worrell. | *-----------------------------------------------------------------------*Top Permalink
OK I just saw the video at for the first time and I saw some pretty interesting things. First of all I thought it was pretty cool that they showed so much of the crowd. Did anyone that was at that show see themselves in the video. I thought I would ask and see. Also I haven't seen if anyone has made the comment about the weird doctors and cops interviewing the dead person on the scene of the death. Think about it , It would make things a whole lot easier if they could just ask"What Would You Say" about what happened to you. Anyway, that is just my view of the video. I know that everyone else has been making comments about the video so I just thought I would through my $.02 in. There is no way to stop the video from airing know so why not look at some of the cool things in it. in Charllote, NC. I have posted this before but I would really like this show. It was an all day show with Edwin, Hootie, And DMB. I would really like to get a Bagby of this show. Could someone please help me. Roopc@tiger.hsc.eduTop Permalink
Hey my friends- (the Dead zine) does a nice little writeup. Nothing earthshattering. In response to a question having something to do with the fame and fortune that goes along with debuting #34 (the rank, not the song, hmm kinduv ironic though...) on Billboard Dave replied (sumpin like) "I just bought this pair of pants and this shirt, Cool huh?" Leftover Salmon gets a writeup too- actually its a good issue. though. just sumpin like ... "DMB even has internet....." woah. now that we're starting to get real popular and all maybe we should make a video for ourselves. maybe it'll become a buzz clip. who would like to be in it. howbout everyone that unites for the 15th. lets make sure our popularity doesn't go to our heads. people might call us sellouts... where's the meeting? i'm clueless.Top Permalink

For anyone who was wondering about the future of Michael Penn's recording career, I recently saw in Rolling Stone that he played an AIDS or somthing benefit, so I would have to assume that he has not called it quits yet. It would be a shame, because I think he is one of the most talented singer/songwriters (except for Dave Matthews, had to make sure I got some DMB content in there somewhere). Although Free For All was great, I think that March is a much better all around effort. My .02 worth. ChrisTop Permalink
in all the interviews I've seen and heard, Dave always says something like Steffan had only been playing bass for a year. So the question is, is the FAQ wrong? is Dave wrong? or are both right? or did I read the FAQ wrong and make all this up? I guess Dave could just mean that Steffan had only been playing electric bass? in Charlottesville would march down to Coran Capshaw's little office deal and ask where we could get a copy of the Tripping Billies video, being Dave's manager (maybe ex-manager, I don't know?) he could probably point us in the right direction unless he's a jerk. That would be cool. Side note, is Bama Rags dave's own label? Like he personally started it? Is anyone else on it?
