Dave on MTV

73KIMBERLING@CUA.EDU Wed Feb 1 13:51:08 1995

I'm digestified, so I don't know if someone has posted this already, but did
anyone else see this last night? I was watching MTV's Alternative Nation with
my roommates who don't know Dave Matthews from Dave McNally (one of four 20
game winners for the Orioles in 1971...but I digress) Sometime after 1:00 AM,
Kennedy comes on and starts making fun of DMB fans because they are so
"fanatical" that they know the words to songs that the band hasn't even
released yet. My roommates thought this sounded kind of pathetic, until I
explained to them that the band's taping policy and soundboard patches, are
the reason for this, and that we're not all a bunch of obsessive-fanatic freaks.
(any self-proclaimed obsessive-fanatic freaks out there...more power to you,
I'm not jumping down your throats) Anyway, the long and short of it all is that
MTV is making fun of us, so life can't be all bad.

Oh yeah, after Kennedy's little speech, they played WWYS. It's the first time
I've seen it. I didn't think it was that great (I, like many others, would
have preferred a straight performance clip. It's still much better than Phish's
"Down with Disease") I'm going to reserve judgment, though, until I see it a
few more times.

happiness in austin texas

HFEJP@utxdp.dp.utexas.edu Wed Feb 1 14:02:48 1995

hi folks...

it'll be a miracle if anyone sees this post. my mail seems to be taking up
to 12 hours to zip through those fiber optic cables and reach all of you...
but i just had to share the fact that this is a fine and lovely day..

i got paid. i have some semblence of an idea about what to write my masters
thesis on. and i finally got tapes of the dmb shows at tower records and
liberty lunch here in austin last 12/15!

there were no patches that night so both are audience tapes...but the quality
is really not bad considering those loud and raucous texans. standard 1994
tour setlist for the evening show at liberty lunch, except for the "crumbs"
they threw us with Help Myself and a nice True Reflections..
but its really the tower performance that makes me smile....such an ideal
little set and a quiet respectful crowd...and outside it was crashing with
one of those explosive pelting texas thunderstorms...and i asked for Drive
in Drive out and they played it. and they played two-step. and granny. and
a soft little say goodbye. it was so lovely....

so i know lots and lots of you have asked me about this...and some of you
haven't but might still be interested...i've got time on my hands till
spring break at least, right? so i'd be happy to do some taping for anyone
who wants to trade...or for our newbies who feel they have nothing to offer,
blanks and postage are always accepted, just drop me a line....

i think i should go get myself some lunch...

Just 2 things

sayat.1@postbox.acs.ohio-state.edu Wed Feb 1 16:07:05 1995

Que pasa all, I just would like to say a couple of things,

First, about this Hootie loose string business on House of Blues. I don't
think he tuned his guitar right then and there, instead I think he switched
guitars. I saw Hootie last semester at the Newport here in Columbus (future
gig for DMB/BHT on March 9?) and he broke a string. And right there in the
middle of the song while singing and jamming, he took off his guitar and
strapped on a new one without missing a beat. I was quite impressed.

Second, I must say that Boofy is THE man! Boof, I just got the Edwin tapes
and they're awesome! Plus the Catfish filler is phat as hell. Big thanks!

That's all so, Peace out,
Jon

HQ sbds needed! =8)

al911@torfree.net Wed Feb 1 16:35:34 1995

Hi there everyone. I've been lurking for a couple of months now and
absorbing all of the info and things here. Must say this seems to be a
great bunch o' people here.

I have been an experienced tape trader for 10 years now. I have become
very picky in my last few years on sound quality. I know about the Bagbys
(sp?) and boards that are out there. I would love to get some CRISPY, LOW
GEN (3 or less) copies of some of these from someone with quality taping
equipment.

It's weird bieng a newbie again 8-S I have been spinning up boxes of
tapes for new NET friends that I have made for the past 6 months for
blanks and postage and trades for high qual stuff.

I only have a couple of DMB to offer anyone (11-17-92 & 9-26-94) that are
of decent enough qual. I do have tons of low gen / high qual Dead, Phish,
Blues Traveler and others. If there are any kind souls out there who
could hook me up with some really high qual DMB sbds I would be forever
in debt. I am hooked hard on DMB! (still trying to learn the lyrics g
and need those gtr chords)

Are there any minaretters (?) out there who are meeting at the Rochester
show? It's gonna be my first (I missed them when they played a bar here
in Toronto last year . .. doh (ala Homer!)) I'd love to hook up.

Any replies can be made to either address listed below (Cserve is a
little more reliable)

Later . . .

DMB on World Cafe

jsr Wed Feb 1 18:21:07 1995

To all of you out there who can't get enough of the Dave Matthews Band,
(which is everyone, I hope) he will be on World Cafe on either feb 4 or
6 (sat or mon) depending on when the station in your area airs the show.
World Cafe is a national radio program out of UPenn that is picked up by
public radio stations everywhere. They play a wide variety of stuff,
from folk to blues to great bands like Dave Mathews. DMB has already
been on their show at least once, but only played a couple songs. The
upcoming broadcast will be a 'miniconcert;' they will play several songs,
probably for over a half hour, and they also get interviewed. So
'newbies' want to start thier live collection of DMB, or if you need some
filler, find your local public radio station that airs World Cafe, and
tune in.
Incidently, the World Cafe has an e-mail address; i don't know why anyone

RR and a show

jsr Wed Feb 1 20:10:39 1995

2 quick things...

songs! I spent $25 for a ticket that was worth 10.... I kicked out for
undisclosed reasons but I've learned my lesson... Don't worry, I wasn't
being abnoxious and crowd surfing, I was just minding by own business... Oh
well, that's the last time I fuck around in a show...

to and I just found an old ticket stub that's barely legible... The date is
March 26, 1994... I must get a copy of This!!!

I have great stuff to trade...

Last but not least... What's the name of the guy playing the electric guitar
at the 10/26/93 Trax show... It's Mike someone.. I can barely hear it but it
totally kicks ass.. I'd kill for a copy of the show where you can really
hear it or even better another show that he plays in....

Semi-annual Rant from Ben + real info. + tape offer (was Re: i have a problem)

jsr Wed Feb 1 20:21:38 1995

this isn't the point. it's the crowd. it's the fucking surfers and beer
spillers and people pushing and pushing and hurting people and yelling at
people and floozy girls who get smashed at the front of the stage who've never
even heard dave before and yet still had to be in front and that guy in the
attempt to get in front of me) and the crowd was so frickin ornery and mean
and jabbing and probing and pinching and all the while i'm just trying to
enjoy myself but it's hard to because chickenman keeps hurting me and i
wonder why are these people so inconsiderate? i think that the crowds at dmb
shows have to be the most obnoxious and impolite people. now, of

Thank you Carly.

Although I didn't have exactly the same experience as anyone else at the
recent Providence shows I would definitely concur that the crowd was one
of the most obnoxious I have ever endured.

Why is this? I don't know. Because I can't quite figure out how people
could decide to crowdsurf during Say Goodbye.

Maybe it's a symptom of the band getting more popular-- they attract
people who aren't as interested in the group as a whole and maybe they're
just at the show to get drunk with their friends and to hear WWYS and Ants
Marching and Satellite.

This is a depressing prospect for the people that are there to enjoy some
interesting music in peace. Because it means first of all that there will
be no peace (hundreds of drunk young people and loud music aren't exactly
the best conditions for that) and it also means that the band will
probably continue down the same seemingly inevitable road that some of us
on this net recognized last spring-- that is to say the shows have become
far less varied during the past year and if you get loud cheers for Ants
Marching and Satellite but people ignore you and start talking to their
friends when you play Two-Step, eventually you're probably going to catch
on to what's happening and NOT play two-step (God forbid the half-dozen
songs that have been put into seemingly permanent retirement by the band).

Okay folks, I think I'm going to open up another round of the usual can of
worms around here, but I think it's time not only that we discuss this in
light of the spring tour but also in light of the fact that management
(and they DO read this net occasionally I have a strong feeling) ought to
know what the fans are (at least this fan is!) thinking when they're
paying $20 for every show and buying $1000 of merchandise by phone every
day.

So . . . I'm now going to quote a whole paragraph from an old post of
mine which STILL (unfortunately) serves as a brief assessment of the
situation in which long-time and/or die-hard Dave Matthews Bands fans

I'm afraid that the band is choosing their sets for the people who want to
hear Tripping Billies just like they did it on R2T. Sure it's nice to play
a request for a fan every once in a while (they've pulled some tunes out
for people at shows I've been to), but I'm going to see a band to see them
do what THEY want to do, not what the idiot next to me wants to hear. I
want to hear Boyd and Leroi and Carter and Stefan and most of all DAVE
expressing themselves. If the way they do it is by playing the same songs
every night, maybe it's all the better for me because I don't have to go
traipsing all over the country to see them. I can just see one or two
shows and then go home, pop in the tape whenever I want, and take comfort
in the fact that wherever the band is tonight, you all at one or another
show are hearing just what I'm hearing through my headphones as I read a
book at my desk. Doesn't this sound like it might get a little bit
BORING? Yup. It does to me.

---

I went to the show on Monday. In some ways I shouldn't complain I guess
because I managed to take a roll of pictures (I'll announce when I scan
the good ones in) and I enjoyed some elements of the show-- a nice Jimi
Thing, a very nice flute solo in Say Goodbye, a fairly unspectacular but
quiet (in terms of the audience shutting up for once) Two-Step, and a
tepid-at-best #36.

---

Neb-- I think the World Cafe is on WFUV, maybe 90.7FM in NYC. Look it up
to be sure. Should be on at 11pm weeknights.

Everyone-- I did a little cleaning up of the web site and it should be
purring like never before. PLEASE check it out if you have the resources
like and don't like and want to see and have to offer, etc. If you want
it done, I can do it (maybe). At least ask or suggest or something.

Again, thanks Carly for setting me off. I feel better already . . .

 carly
 cjacobs@smith.smith.edu

---

Speaking of which, I would like to make a tape offer to the net at large
(I figure if you can stand to read my complaining it's the least I can
do!). So, since my two favorite venues are Wetlands and the Georgia
Theater, I will make a copy of a DMB show from one of those two venues
from my collection. The offer can be for up to 4 tapes. You send me
blanks and return postage and your address and an envelope to accomodate
the tapes, and I make copies and send them out to you. This offer is NOT
limited in time or number of people. Write to me, I'll write back saying
either "send 'em out!" or "give me a week or two, and I'll get back to
you."

Please note this offer is designed to prevent anyone from complaining that
either trees don't ever pan out (I'm never been on one that worked,
although I have the utmost faith that the combat boots one will!) and this
offer should also prevent people from saying that it's hard to get started
trading tapes without any. Because, now it isn't!

---

Oh, also about the web/ftp site, the combat boots tree structure is
available, as is the tourdates file, chords file, lyrics file, alternate
lyrics file, and faq file. Please don't ask someone to send the files to
you-- almost everyone on the internet can use FTP. It's just a question
of learning how, and frankly if you all should so you're not dependent on
anyone for these things from now on. Andrew Cox's excellent guide to
FTPing was posted only yesterday, so look it up and READ IT!

---

Well, nothing else to report. I'm still working on Richmond, all you
crazy Virginia people!

newsflash: Dave not a sellout

jsr Wed Feb 1 21:57:41 1995

Well....

Obsessed with whining and grovelling, we have missed something I find to
be of relevance. I missed it too, until I read an article/ interview on
DMB in the New Haven Advocate today.

Dave, surprisingly enough, has not taken to playing What Would You Say
with any sort of regularity.

Check the recent setlists. Then check as they are posted in the future.

"I'm trying to get RCA pissed off"

Or words to that effect (pissed off definitely used to describe his
intent toward RCA).

Not as great as a return to two set shows, or 20 minute Jimi Things, or
Minarets - Bluewater, but certainly a step in the right direction. Maybe
that damn Harvard guy will stop that whining now :)

Actually- I agreed with most of that. At least there's some variation in
the setlists. These days, there's only about five or six bands playing
venues larger than small clubs and varying their setlists at all.

Go see Blue Miracle tomorrow in Blacksburg, or right this very moment at
the Flood Zone, or next Saturday in NYC with Solar Circus at some club on
Sullivan street.

I'll shut up now.

hey all,
Through the kindness of the net and newbie offers, I've got 3 tapes and one
compilation. If anyone would be kind enough to set me up with just one
tape, I could build off of that.
The only repeats from the night before were #36, Ants, and a Jimi Thing with
a completely different jam then what direction they went in the night before.
In the middle of the jam the crowd starts softly chanting "we want the funk,
rabadap that funk" in time with the music. Dave picks up on it and briefly
goes into some nice funky rythm playing. The rest of the band never really
jammed on it though, but still some nice crowd participation.
were hot. Here's the notsoaccurateoutoforder list

broken tape

jsr Wed Feb 1 23:47:26 1995

Hello all,
I am looking to replace one of my favorite
tapes that I broke last week. The tape is 11-25-92
from the flood zone right before Thanksgiving. I have
70+ hours to trade, so PLEASE. As long as I'm begging
I would also like a tape with "hiku warrior"? I have never
heard it before.
A friend of mine told me that the disk from browns island
is on sale at books strings and things in Blacksburg.

dave piss on rca; rca bad! adam piss on tanen; tanen bad!

jsr Wed Feb 1 23:57:14 1995

Dave, surprisingly enough, has not taken to playing What Would You Say
with any sort of regularity.

Check the recent setlists. Then check as they are posted in the future.

"I'm trying to get RCA pissed off"

GOOD.

Not as great as a return to two set shows, or 20 minute Jimi Things, or
Minarets - Bluewater, but certainly a step in the right direction. Maybe
that damn Harvard guy will stop that whining now :)

i agree! what's up with that guy? who does he think he is anyway???

MINARETS digest 35 -- audience taping

jsr Thu Feb 2 00:12:45 1995

dead tapes are either audience tapes, or soundboard tapes with audience blend
for ambience. and, yeah, good mikes are expensive. a friend has nakamichi
shotgun mikes( $1000), which he then spent another $250 or so on to customize
into separate mike and power supply elements( mikes poke out of the front of
greek fisherperson cap, cables down neck to power supplies inside shirt-great
stealth set-up, but no dancing or turning of head permitted!--imaging smears).
positioned the same distance from stage as distance between speaker banks makes
a sweet tape with nice hall ambiance and the excitement of being IN the show,
instead of disconnected from it, as many sbd. tapes sound. the front rows of a
balcony in nice halls will also make fine tapes.

Sorry I haven't answered yet..

jsr Thu Feb 2 00:28:41 1995

Hello everyone, This is a quick note to all of you who answered my
request for trades. Thanks to everyone who responded. I've got tons of
setlists now to sort through. Unfortunately, midterms and papers are
currently kicking(no pun intended) me pretty hard. The NCAA doesn't
approve of sub C grades. As soon as I get
back on top of things I plan on churning out some tapes to trade. It
shouldn't take too long for me to get in touch with everyone. Also, if
anyone has a copy of DMB covering Sweet Home Alabama I would love to get
a copy. It helps me remember where home really is. Anyway, I'll talk to
all of you as
soon as I can and if anyone else wants to swap lists give me a buzz at

Hootie/World Cafe

jsr Thu Feb 2 00:52:58 1995

There have been quite a number of posts on here in which people have
referred to Hootie's HOB show on TBS. Everyone seems to be referring to
DARIUS RUCKER, the lead singer of H&tB, as "Hootie." This is not his
fucking name! aaah! (sorry, this is just really annoying) Hootie and the
Blowfish are nicknames of friends' of the band. Everyone check out
hootie, and try to see them before they start playing large theaters or
what have you. not exactly a great jamming band, but they are fantastic
songwriters and have lots of fun on stage. spontaneity, likelihood of
jamming, and stagetalk seem to increase as the band gains in
proximity to columbia, sc, their home town.

ok, requisite dave content - in nyc, wfuv is possible, but as world cafe
is an npr show, i would suspect that it will be on wnyc, the major nyc
npr station. i'm mailing world cafe anyway, and will post it when i find
out. later y'all

tryin' again

jsr Thu Feb 2 02:31:08 1995

Are ya'll sick of hearing from me?

Looking for tapes.
OLD DMB, Boyd Tinsley Band, Indecision, 92 HORDE performances by any of
the bands that showed up, Allgood boots, Bela boots, shit I've never
heard of, Root boots, I'm easy, Dammit, and I'm starved for jammin' tunes
that defy studio-recordings. HQ preferred...I have nothing to offer but a
meager Dead/Phish/DMB collection, blanks, postage, and undying gratitude
in the form of daily E-mail ass-kissing for positive replies.

Anyone out there own 2 from the Vault?
I was just listening to Bob's geet on headphones. he used to be pretty
fuckin' cool before he got old and learned how to play, and sing an' stuff.

*******OBLIGATORY DAVE-THING***********

Anyone like the Christmas Song?
Anyone got it live? never seen.
I cover it every now and then with my traveling minstrel show, and
everybody looks at me cross-eyed like I'm a Sandaled Jesus-Nut and throws
limes at me...hmmmm

WE get a similar response with We Bid You Goodnight, unless there's
a weighted dead-following presence in the room.

I say "I'm gonna play a song by Dave Matthews...ya'll know who that is?"
one person goes WeeeeeeeHOOOOOOOOO!, so I played a little acoustic
version of Ants, and she says, " is that the song that's on MTV?"

and I launch into a rippin' version of "Whippin' Post" and she's like
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHOOOOOOWOOOOOOOWOOOOOO! and forgets her question.

In Dela-where?, the DMB constituents are few and far between and tend to
be pretty mainstreamed...look out, they'll be crowd surfing in Philly
w/out a doubt.

I will remind ya'll that I am still ticketless for Philly, and groveling
like a blind man in a snowstorm for any extras. I'll be the skinny guy
walkin' around in a pair of grossly over-sized overalls walking around w/
my roomate (equally goofy overalls, only mine are purple-tie-dyed, his
aren't) who is probably about 7' tall, and still growin'.

If my index finger is raised, does that mean "I need a ticket?" at a DMB
Venue, or does it mean something foreign like :"Save porpoise; eat walrus"

I'm not very good with the sign language...i thought I was signalling
that I needed a ticket at a MSG Dead show last fall, and someone wanted
to know why I was advertising that I possessed "Killer-Oner blotter hits"

hmmmmmmm....well, no I don't....uh.......killer WHAT-er?
This is pretty fuckin' weird, maybe I just get the winners...maybe I look
like I have no idea what I'm doing...fortunately that shit rolls off my
back fairly easily.

Alright, I'm sure most of you have deleted by now, so I can get down to
TROOPER!

10-12-94 at the Stone Balloon, in Newark, DE...HQ, low gen...good stuff

unfortunately, it'll be a little incomplete 'cause it's a 100 min. show,
and all I got is 90s...so I guess "Recently gets cut pretty much OFF.
sorry bout that. hey, free is free, dammit!

Cinci show Feb. 28 + misc.

jsr Thu Feb 2 10:38:20 1995

I just ordered tickets for DMB-BHT in Cincinnati on Feb. 28 after seeing
the message about it. It's at the Taft Theatre and the tickets were $20.
I got two 2nd row louge box, which sounds like the lower balcony, the dude
said they were good, who knows? I'm psyched. Are there any other dates we
should know about that aren't listed?

I like to tape music on HI-FI VHS. I put up to 8 hours of near CD quality
sound on one $2 tape. Now that's a bargain don't you think, that replaces
5.33 90 minute tapes with much better quality. With my VCR I can index
tracks or shows to FF to easily, but I like to just let 'em play, all day.

I'd throw a huge freakin' party for everyone if I got 8 hours of quality
live DMB on Hi-Fi VHS. So, anyone out there with a hi-fi VCR AND a great
Bagby collection willing to make this tape? I'd be glad to make copies of
it for anyone else that's interested.

I guess I should stay out of it, but reading usenet news since 1987 and
being an originator of rec.sport.waterski I guess I have come to like
newsgroups. I totally understand the fears of minarets loosing it's
personality, but it's gonna grow no matter what. It'll grow to the point
where nobody could possibly have time to read every message (I can barely
do it now). The closeness will be tough to maintain, but maybe if the
newsgroup were started, but minarets left, most newbies would find the
newsgroup first and stick to that, leaving minarets pretty much the way it
is. With the news you can search and scan articles, subjects, etc. The
articles stay there until I read or delete them. It's also easier to scan
the subject listing and type the number of the article I want to read
instead of scanning through the digest. Controlling assholes may be tough,
but I don't think it's that bad (but I don't read r.m.phish). A moderated
group would be WAAY to stale I would think, let it go. We know DMB is pure
talent and everyone who disagrees has really bad taste in music.

I guess I don't care either way, but you better be prepared to launch a
vote-no campaign because that's the only thing that would stop the
formation of rec.music.DMB or alt.music.DMB if somebody wanted to start it.

Anybody want to get together in Cincinnati before and/or after the show? I
know some kick ass places and have a friends condo w/ hot tub if any road
trippers need to crash.

Later,
Chas

Did YOU know it was crazy hat night?

jcrother Thu Feb 2 11:32:31 1995

Welcome Jon Yang!!!! - The man who turned me, eric, marianne and a
whole heap of other people onto Dave Matthews. Scream baby, Screeaaam!!!

Ok, these crowd surfers - I have a solution - (somewhat vindictive) but a
solution
no less. All of the "I'm here to hear some great music and watch the show"
people
should bring a large magic marker (you know the ones that are about an inch
thick)
to the DMB shows. Whenever a "surfer" comes near you, just hold the marker up in
the
air - yeah you get the picture. It'll only take a few blemished Polo shirts and
Cashmere
sweaters for them to get the picture. hehehe

Yes, I know, I'm evil but this really pisses me and a lot of other people off.

Every night should be crazy hat night,
Gavin

oh i concur with gavin's message although it lacked promise and true

RE: Moshing

erw@medinfo.rochester.edu Thu Feb 2 13:01:38 1995

What is the deal with this country. Why do people mosh at
everything. DMB usually jas
good crowds but I have run into some real bad ones. Last fall at the
Avalon in Boston, the
most obnoxious people were there and they almost wrecked the whole concert
for me. I say that
Bill Clinton should make this practice illegal and we would all have a
better time for it
I really am sorry for the remarks that I posted last week but I did
mean some of them. I
guess that I will have to live with some of the babble(which is what I am
really doing).
Looking forward to Saturday Night, thank god the Orpheum is not a
place for moshing,

Sorry about nonDMB content
I have found the perfect spoon. And to think that it was laying right
next to the others the whole time. Amazing things happen when you're
looking the other way.
ALSO- The groundhog didn't see he shadow so that means spring is on it's
way! That is obvious by the unseasonably warm 75 degrees outside in
Alabama today.

Cousin Jenny! Happy Birthday! Your NYE tapes are on the way!

Sorry, I'll stop rambling - but I'm having a good day, I hope everyone
else is too!
One last thing - If I had won 10 million dollars, I think I'd have a
little bit more expression on face than that lady did after the
superbowl. And to think I made all my friends come to my house for the
game so they could be on tv when I won, damn.

Sunny days are here again!

heads up!!!!!...now SCREAM!!!!!!

JNICHOL1@UA1VM.UA.EDU Thu Feb 2 13:45:20 1995

greetings all...here's a question i've pondered for a few days now...i was
gazing at the lyrics to "recently", right?...right...and i was wondering if
anyone knows the story behind it...you see, i thought 'hmmmm, dave is singing
about a time when this he and this older lady got involved romantically...',
right?...right...then i thought about it even more and said to myself...what a
minute, he used to live in south africa...maybe the person he was involved with
in the song didn't conform to the amount of melanin in the skin that apartheid
had judged human beings on for a long *long* time...and then, always the cynic
i just said, 'pak, this is all full of shit, and your full of shit, and the
song is just plain good...quit fucking being so analytical!..."

so what is your verdict?...am i full of shit?...it all depends on my eating
habits (or lack of eating habits)...or is the song about a particular time in
dave's life?...post me directly, if at all possible...

and speaking off times in people's lifes...i want to ask you all do me a big
favor...yeah, you don't know me, but i *sound* friendly enough, right?...
right...you see, a friend and i are making a movie...yeah, a movie...courtney,
this isn't "immortality", this is something totally different...i spent my
entire evening with this amigo making a screenplay for this flick...

the majority of the action takes place in a public bathroom...yup...and what i
want from you are tales (preferably true) of things that have happened to you
in public waste depository areas...you may be thinking, 'whoa, wait a minute
this "pak" fucker is way too scatological for me!!!"...wrong, i am depending
on *you* to give me some inspiration here...don't you feel lucky ;)...now
there are some criteria for your entries...here they are...

the hand dryer, and really cool explosions...unless you want this thing to come
out looking like an ed wood movie...but then again, why should you care what
the goddamned movie looks like?...
not "schindler's list"...it is movie about a day in the bathroom...in other
words, try to make it short...

thanks in advance...i don't know what i have to offer you as incentive for your
(hopefully!!!) creative input...but i can think of something, i'm sure...stay
young, and don't hurt yourself...

We know DMB is pure
talent and everyone who disagrees has really bad taste in music.

i agree with this projection, but i still chafe under the idea of
rec.music.DMB. do people get the FAQ automattically when they
subscribe to minarets?

Hello All,

I've been lurking on this news group for about a week, and it's time to
post...I picked up UTTAD before Christmas, and was very impressed. Then,
I discovered RTT...WOW! Got last minute tickets to the show in Burlington
last Thursday and was blown away. ;-) I was against the boards in the
front, right in front of Dave...AWESOME!

Now, how do I go about getting some live material? I know taping is allowed
and I know tapers were there. I'd like this show, but I'd also like some
others, too. I have some crispy Phish, if anyone wants to trade, or I know
how to send blanks and postage to make life easy for someone.

sifting through all this "somewhat deficient melanin" crap makes
you look like your afraid that it might be true, in my not so
humble opinion, and makes you look just as bad as ranting
and raving about how much blue haired asians suck. what is
wrong with you? how in god's name does thinking that perhaps
dave has the decency to not care about skin color, or sex for

Just look over their stupidity

ROOPC@tiger.hsc.edu Thu Feb 2 16:35:35 1995

This is just a comment on the crowd surfing issue at hand. I have found
that crowd surfing occurs all over not just in the north so don't rag on the
north. I my self was born and breed in what is to many southerners as God's
country, so I am not being bias. I attended the album release show at UVA
and it was one of the most what you might say violent DMB shows I have been
to. So It is not the northerners to blame. I have two classifications for
concert goers in general. The first is the person that goes to listen to
the music, and have a good time. The other is there to have a good time
also, but they are also there to be noticed. This is the catagory I feel
the crowd surfers are in. I am not trying to be condesending but that is
the way I see it. The next issue I have to address is the problem of people
saying that DMB is selling out. I will just make this short and sweet. I
have a tape where Dave is apologizing for not being in the area lately, and
he says that the band is " Just trying to get it on," and we should be happy
for them in their quest. Just as long as the quality of the music doesn't
change it is fine with me. Oh yeah I just remembered I was suppose to trade
some DMB with a person for some BT. I feel bad about this but I have lost
every peice of Info about you so could you please get in touch with me soon.
Also if anyone knows anything about Blake Campbell I would really appriciate
some info because he owes me some tapes from way back in Nov.

Stone Balloon

sorry to all who responded #2-12...

The first was picked and will get E-mail from me in the near enough future

It's surprising that people seem to have gone through a similar amount of
anguish with cars and cops this week. Jeez, ya'll, stay off the roads
where the cops ARE, or drive like they MIGHT be there (comforting advice
from the guy who calls himself SpeedLimit 95, i'm sure)

Ever since I was in a flipped vehicle full of stolen weapons and illegal
drugs with a cop from just east of Charlottesville poking his nose under
the seats and in the trunk, I've taken on a new attitude about such things.
I hope ya'll do before there are any less of us Minareters.

And if your making the drive to Philadelphia, be extremely careful on 95
north of the PA line because people drive like assholes and the cops ARE
NOT THERE to scare any of 'em away.

***************REQ'D DAVE STUFF*****************

Thanks to all who've responded, confirming that I'm not the only one who
like the Christmas song. I WILLL HATE WWYS if my roomate plays it one
more time....he bought the album, and I think I've heard the whole thing
through TWICE since I've been awake this afternoon.

my copy's in the mail from BMG (10 for the price of one with NOTHING
MORE TO BUY ......EVER!!!!!!)

Oh back to Christmas song...I do cover the song, I DON"T know the
official chords...I FAKE it. if anyone outthere DOES have the correct
chords (TAB, etc) I'd appreciate them. I have to shove that little
disclaimer in there that says "It goes a little like this..." and then,
when I'm finished..."yeah, Dave Matthews...he sings it better and he
plays it better....so don't boycott 'em just 'cause I suck!"

Also, igf I've contacted any of you about trades, get back to me quickly.
I now have six blanks ('cause I gave one away)...they're all 90 min XLII
If anyone else wants that Stone ballon show, they need to send me a 110
minute tape.

jazzbo@eliza.netaxis.com Thu Feb 2 16:46:12 1995

If anyone's got any extras, I'm looking for two tickets to the DMB show
this Sunday at the Palace Theatre in New Haven, CT. I was totally
surprised today when I found out that the show was sold out... wow!
ANyway, if anyone's got any extras at all, an e-mail would be appreciated!

P.S. Have a nice day.

Boy am I forgetful

ROOPC@tiger.hsc.edu Thu Feb 2 16:56:23 1995

I'm really sorry about this but I forgot to get to my point in the middle of
my post. The best thing I have found to do to Crowd surfers is this. As
they go over grab them around the waist and and pull them down. After this
tell them that you came to the showto see the band not to carry them around
on your head. They will get the point, and if not just pull them down
again.
the HORDE show in Charlotte , NC. 93. This was the first time I saw DMB and
I was wondering if anyone might have this show. I have some DMB and RR to
trade. Please could someone help me out.

Northerners

I'm glad Swag said it, cuz I wasn't about to get flamed for saying it. The
thought has crossed my mind, though.

I'm in. Working it!

SHOWTIME/SNINETFRM2/yangj%Viacom@mcimail.com Thu Feb 2 17:06:53 1995

Greetings to all from a newbie in NYC who is finally on this kooky Minaret
thang. Heard so much about from friends. It took me nearly 3 weeks to get
on. I'm actually at work right now. Going insane. Would rather be outside
w/ my headphones on and grooving to #36. What I really need right now is a
hit (BONG that is).

I want to give a shout to my dear friends Eric and Gavin. I thank them for
their warm welcome.

Eric- you send some well-crafted messages my poetic free verse kind of
friend. Keep it up. I get a certain joy reading them during my daily
drudgery at work. Hope med school is treating you well. Oh yeah,
as some I've seen at DMB shows). I kind of like Gavin's magic marker
strategy. Indelible is the key.

Gavin- just wanted to say that you fuckin' rule. Hit it!

Back to business. Thank you Ben @ Smith for his accurate and humorous
comments from earlier today. Kill the Chicken Man!!! Personally, I could
do w/o the moshing, crowd-surfing, and other prebuscent type drunken
behavior at DMB shows. Don't get me wrong people. I'm a fun guy, but it's
just not that type of music. Believe me, I say get stoned, get lit, trip
out...do what you want but just keep it cool.

Dance to the music, Groove to the music, Sing along, Stand and chill Sit
and chill
Appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of the five men on stage. Don't act
like idiots. Don't hurt others around you. Don't make it a bad experience
for others. It's just some damn common courtesy.

Can't we all just get along! ( just kidding ) There's always going to be
ignorant assholes everywhere...even at DMB shows.

Regardless, I'll be seeing Dave and the guys in Philly (Saturday) and at
Roseland (Thursday show) this month. No moshing or surfing from me. Just
chillin' and groovin'. I may go a little crazy if Carter does a drum solo
(since I am a drummer).

I want to say one more thing before I go back to work. I'm just a little
bummed that Dave will be playing shorter sets since their touring w/ Big
Head Todd as well as there be an opening act. I'm shelling out some good
money to see DMB. That's who I want to see. Not some other fuckin' lame
band that RCA Records or some stupid management company thought would be
good to tour w/ them. All right, enough bitchin'.

My day goes on. Keep it simple.

Much peace,

Jonathan (mr. bitter)

News Flash Important!

SHOWTIME/SNINETFRM2/yangj%Viacom@mcimail.com Thu Feb 2 17:33:28 1995

Hello again!

Here's a bit of interesting news that I just found out from a co-worker. He
found this out from America On-line.

Rumor has it that this is the tentative line-up for Lollapalooza '95 is as

Data (don't know)
Outcast (don't know)
Satchel (don't know)
Blur (cool)
Frank Black (excellent)
Veruca Salt (lame)

They Might Be Giants (nice)
Digeable Planets (real nice)
Bush (don't know)
Coolio (token rap act)
Sonic Youth
Hole (suck)

Porno for Pyros (not bad...Jane's Addiction reunion would have been better)
Nine-Inch-Nails

and last but not least and not headlining...

Dave Matthews Band

I can see it now. Throngs of Gen X kids moshing and crowd surfing to
something like "Say Goodbye" or one of my favorites "Cry Freedom"

DMB at Lollapalooza. Just a rumor so far. Good or Bad? Strange? Let's
talk about it.
I say they should stick to maybe headlining the H.O.R.D.E. Tour. What do
you all think???

I'm going to happy hour!

Cheers,

Jonathan (mr. bitter)

Changes In Italian Boot Laws

al911@torfree.net Thu Feb 2 18:06:42 1995

Just thought that this might be of interest. I know that DMB footware CDs
are rare (only one so far, right?). Well, this may be the beginning of
the end for the possibility of future ones.

Later . . .

Kanada Kev =8)

---------- Forwarded message ----------

I thought this, taken from the February 1995 ICE, might be of interest; all
typos are my own - Linda Darling

"Though the full ramifications are not yet clear, a major change has occurred
regarding the legality of live CDs in Italy. In mid-December, the SIAE (the
Italian equivalent of ASCAP or BMI, which collects songwriting royalties on
live CDs, indirectly giving them their legal status) issued a statement that
it would no longer accept royalties on new live CDs of European artists or
reissues of existing titles. According to one boot label, "it looks as if
it's now illegal to issue CDs on Euro artists and concerts [similar to
Germany]." (Changes in German law two years ago not only made it illegal to
produce CDs by European nationals, but also restricted the use of recordings
made at concerts in most of Europe by performers from any country.){this is
the result of the famous PC/WEA International suit, I believe - did you know
that Germany had always protected German artists from boots, but left artists
from other countries wide open to being booted quasi-legally? - Linda} The
status of live CDs of US artists was still unclear at presstime (CDs of
American artists recorded in America may remain legal), but it appears legal
bootlegging in Italy may be nearing an end, at least on the scale the
industry has enjoyed over the past four years. Rumors are already swirling
about some labels investigating copyright laws in other parts of the world
for possible relocation."

Rabid Squirrels!1Rabid Squirrels!!

KULPK@tiger.hsc.edu Thu Feb 2 18:08:48 1995

Rabid squirreles are running amok on campus!!!! Well, actually they're
racoons.....well, one racoon...but considering the approx. 12 to 1 squirrel to
student ratio how long can it be before rbid squirrels _ARE_ running amok on
campus. Are you people listening? No? Ok, then I'd better get to the Dave
them towards the security personell who are always trying to get at them
anyway. It's easier, they won't be able to do anythign about it, and they'll
be tossed out, so as to assure that they won't do it again, that night I mean.
I also had something fairly relevant to say, but now I fear it's gone. Travis,
I put your tapes in the mail at 4:12pm, so look for them by monday or so.
What's this I hear about a Winston-Salem show? I didn't see it on the schedule
of dates. If this show does in fact exist will someone please mail me the
Dates, venue, ticket prices, when tickets go on sale, etc. Thank you very
much, and good night.

"Please have a party waiting for us after the show"

No rabid squirrels will be allowed to smoke in my messages, the rest of you may
proceed as usual.
