Was disappointed to not see many pholks at the TR3 show 1/21 at Miller's in Charlottesville. Dave Matthews and Shannon Worrell and assorted others were there lovin the groovy tunes and funky karma. I missed the Friday night show, but Shannon Worrell was playign across town. (Charlottesville's great for music; ya'll come visit now, ya hear?) Anyway, I think more of you ought to hear TR3. So, if there's enough interest, I' ll tree what I have. Please express such interest to me, personally, rather than through the net. Also, I'd LOOOOOVE to get any TR3 I dont already have. I keep trying in vain to get someone to tape their live shows, but it just doesnt seem to happen, so I only have on tape what I got taped myself. Ah, well. Someday folks will listen. Ellis P.S. Someone please tape any TR3 shows you come near. Danke. :) FAQ File Administrator for rec.music.phish & phish-digestTop Permalink
Hey Everybody, I was wondering if someone out there would mind sending me the chords file. I e-mailed Ben, who is supposed to be the origintor of it, but got no response back. I would be in deep gratitude to anyone that could help me out. (P.S., you may have been right- I think I couldn't reach him with his old address, Rick) Thanks much, something to note when it comes to making file requests (and this goes for everybody) is that it takes some time. none of us, not me, not clare, not ben, and, to my knowledge, not dan, have some automated unix system spitting these files back at you as send as you send us something. pretty much, as far as my end of the deal goes, for each request that comes to me, i have to send an individual reply for each file i send back, which could be up to 6 at one time for the complete lyrics file and the complete faq. basically, i don't have time to do this sort of stuff instantaneously, and i doubt the other file keepers do, either. so bear with us, and the files, or a response, should come to you. AT LEAST A WEEK. if i'm not mistaken, i told rich on saturday or sunday afternoon that ben had the chords file. give him some more time. we're all busy people. and not just us filekeepers. thing of the poor soul who warned us not to read 7 digests in one sitting. that used to happen to me on phish.net (where 7 digests can come in 24 hours). just be patient. ____________________________________ "it is indeed a great gift of heaven\____________________________________ __________________________________ \_________________________________Top Permalink

Crothers, graduates from college??? Don't worry about me; I may never graduate at the rate I'm headed. :) Regardless, Minarets has secured a spot on Netspace, Brown University's student-run computer network. The WWW Dave home page and text files already reside there; only Minarets remains unconnected. In fact, Minarets will most likely be moved to Netspace within the next six months. Once Minarets is permanently settled on Netspace, I can't forsee anything jeopordizing it. As for the administration of Minarets, I'll probably just hand it over to RCA and let them go wild. :) alex crothers ps-just kidding.Top Permalink
OK If this is being re-posted, I am very sorry. I recieved a "Undeliverable mail message" about this and just need to get it on the .net. So here it Heya friends, It seems my post of having Boulder Boots in my hands went over better than I had expected. I have received numerous requests for trades. Boy, are you folks friendly here!! So, as I have already told one person, I have suspended my trade offer at the current time. I have about 6 people I want to get something set up with before I dig myself into a hole way too deep. So, if you responded to me personally about the tapes, I have contacted you already. If you sent mail to me after I posted this, then I'll send mail to you letting you know that you are on the "Wave 2" list. So for now, this is the best I can do. Many of ya seem very interested in the sound Dave 'n' company get in the mountains out here. And short of tree-ing these puppies (which doesn't seem right just yet), this is the only way I can work it out right now. Hey now friends, I too have pondered the strange thought of DMB doing the Charlie Daniels Band's "Devil Went Down to Georgia." It would be a great showcase for Boyd's talents. Unfortunately, I think it would require Dave to go electric. I'm not sure I can imagine a non electric version of the song. This brings me to question I have been wondering for some time. Has dave ever played electric. I've seen them live around six times, but never with anything but acoustic guitar. I wonder what the DMB sound would be like if dave tried on an electric. later on, --MorganTop Permalink

It wasn't but two short years ago that Colorado was introduced to DMB when they opened for the Samples at Red Rocks Amp. (Every should be so lucky as to see DMB at Red Rocks--Magical). Since that time, I have seen both bands live numerous times and witness the release of two cds by each band (the Last Drag, Autopoilt, & R2T, UTTAD). It has become obvious to me that DMB is superior to The Samples in every way except one. When the devil (the major record lables) came knocking, both bands were quick to sell their musicial souls. The Samples were quick to realize their mistake. WHen the discovered they had lost to much freedom and control, walked out of the studio, tore up their contract, and signed with the grass-roots label W.A.R.?. Since that time, The Samples have been fairly successful, consisitently remaining at the top of the College Billboards, touring across the country, selling hunderds of the thousands of cd's, and developing a gigantic mailing list---ALL WITHOUT SELLING THEMSELVES OUT. Dave on the other hand, took the big money and ran. SInce that time they have put out an album (UTTAD) that may as well been edited and mixed by BABY FACE and their concerts have become alot more like a crowded room with UTTAD playing at an extremely loud volume. Perhaps if DMB had followed The Samples footsteps there would be one less shitty commercialized album sitting on the self at BLOCKBUSTER MUSIC and I wouldn't hear What Would You Say sandwiched in between BOyz TO MEN and Nirvana. Pat P.S. Check out Sean Kelly's Soul album from W.A.R.? records.Top Permalink

Regarding the recent post about the Samples being better than DMB because they when they actually used to be good, and before the years of partying caught up to them. Now, I can barely even listen to their last 2 CD's without wondering what the difference between songs is. Not to diss Sean Kelly because of his learning disability or anything(I have me him in person, so I can attest to this), but he is nowhere near as "smart" musically as Dave is. Dave's ability to transform what IMHO are lame studio songs into moving pieces of music that make some people (not me) want to wet their pants is stupendous. music with blinders on. If you will notice, his address is most likely from Denver University, which means that he is spoon fed the Samples every other month probably. He probably feels the same way about the Samples that all the Virginians feel about Dave and his oh so tremendously talented band members. I have been to concerts by each of these bands, and although have seen DMB only 2 times, and that was this year, can say that there is no match between them in terms of music put out. The Samples used to be a smash-mouth band (or they at least were when they played here 2 years ago, but now are bad enough that we walked out of their concert in December here because they were horrible. pretty much just play the same songs night after night, without any jamming. Dave, well we all know how much the band jams it night in and night out. Anyways, if this guy wants to think the way he does, let him. Just one less person who would probably spill beer on you at a show. Enough ranting and raving for me, Steve who is not intimidated by Clare or any of the other netters who could probably kick my ass...:)Top Permalink
I know the whole history of Peter and DMB but wasn't Peter's timing in leaving the band pretty bad? I mean I have tapes of him playing with the band in late '93 and there must have been talk about the bands record deal at that time. You think he would've stuck around when things looked good. i think one of the biggest reasons he quit, actually, is that he didn't want to deal with the fame. record deal or not, by spring '93, everybody in c-ville knew that dave was going to be famous. if anything, i think dave's impending fame was what helped peter decide to call it quits. ____________________________________ "it is indeed a great gift of heaven\____________________________________ __________________________________ \_________________________________Top Permalink

I just got cut off, that's cool. Sorry if I posted the money story twice, but my message got bounced. As a little side bar to that story, the guy from Dallas who said that DMB was playing a private show.....I asked my brother about the show and he said that MCI moved the convention to Dallas, I don't know if they took DMB with them, but this could be the same show. Damn, if this was still in WVA i could go see it. eMpTyVee says to watch instead of reading books, kinda sums up the whole station to me. Dusty, are you still alive? Talk to me!! I had something else to say, but I can't remember what, it'll come to me in the middle of class. OK, I'm a little offended about the statement to the affect that everything (hunneycut specificly) is not known for good lyricism. is it REALLY necessary to compare these two bands? in my opinion, i think the samples are the sell-outs because these are the same guys that, a year ago said, "we don't need advertising, we don't need mtv or radio play, word of mouth is enough" and then i turn to page 72 in numerous rolling stone magazines and there they are, full page ad....hmm, now what were you saying? comparing is not necessary. i used to like the samples. now i don't. dave makes me happy, though. yay for me. carlyTop Permalink
Here is some clarification on the Feb. 4th AWARE Showcase in Nashville. The answer to Rick's question on the length of sets and number of stages is that there will be two stages. Each band will get 40 min. The stages will alternate allowing for a 5 min. break to do whatever you gotta do. So, there will be music from 7 to 2 AM. Maybe a little past 2 since there will most likely be a jam at the end involving many bands. The doors open at 6 so get there early for the free T-shirts. Kieth asked about taping. That is up to the venue and the performers. Hopefully they will let you tape but only the 328 Performance hall knows, I guess. Alright, the mandatory DMB material. Carter will be on Vertical Horizon's new CD. I believe Boyd will make a guest appearance too. Maybe it was Leroi. Sorry, its been a long day and the memory is fading. The CD should be out by mid-February. If you can't find it at a store near you, it is always available through Madaket Records by calling (800)AWARE-65. OK, if you're still with me, and you want a copy of the 11/9/94 Lexington barn-burner of a show Bagby, send me your list and we'll work something out. :) For all you Bagby-less folks out there, send me a funny story about something that happened to you or a friend and you can grab a copy of anything you want from my somewhat limited collection. I'll take the first 5 stories, so HURRY! OK, I'm done. Scott FrazierTop Permalink
I think that this guy is either flaming us, or just looking at the music with blinders on. If you will notice, his address is most likely from Denver University, which means that he is spoon fed the Samples every other month probably. He probably feels the same way about the Samples that all the Virginians feel about Dave and his oh so tremendously talented band members. I have been to concerts by each of these bands, and although have seen DMB only 2 times, and that was this year, can say that there is no match between them in terms of music put out. just a competition over something that can't be resolved because the both of you like your own band much more than the other's. But, i am going to have to back you both up on this one, just in seperate areas. You mentioned Sean's "learning disability." Well, if he actually has one, then more power to him for being so successful. He obviously is not that handicapped, or else he wouldn't have been able to write most of the groups' songs. You should check out his new solo album entitled "Lighthouse Rocket." While they have done many drugs along the way, they have also maintained their reputation as being a great band. So, as far as DMB is concerned, i am equally a fan of theirs. One of the problems with the Samples is that they seem to be so serious on stage, while Boyd is always smiling and Dave is always dancing. I really like to see a can continue to be successful with their video, then more power to them. Did you know that the Samples have a video too? They made one for the song "Everytime." I did like seeing DMB in TiME magazine today though. I haven't seen the Samples in there yet. Oh, and one more thing, while i don't want to upset anyone, be careful as to what you say about us folk from Colorado being "spoon fed" by seeing our favorite group all the time. Frankly, i love it. I mean, i saw them three weeks ago, twice, and now i am lucky enough to see them again tomorrow night in Fort Collins. I mean, don't you wish you could see DMB every three weeks? Seriously though, i see them a lot now because they always leave this time of year on a tour...this time to the southeast. So, i catch them when i can. I definitely don't want to start a "which band is better contest" here! I truly enjoy both bands a lot, and i have about 10 bootlegs from each. I think that we should all be happy enough with the fact that we can tape their shows. These bands are unique, in that, they are both relatively big, and we are allowed to record their shows, even with DAT players (or used to be able to??) So, all i have to say about this debate is that i hope its short life is over, and that each person should think this to themselves when asked which is better, before they P.s. What does IMHO stand for?Top Permalink

Blamo! Fame, We Wholeheartedly Embrace You Combining plaintive alterna-rock lyrics with a Graceland-period Paul Simon sound, the DAVE MATTHEWS BAND has become the rage of college radio. Under the Table and Dreaming, its major-label debut, has also made the quintet an MTV favorite and poised its genteel hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia, to become the next Seattle. Lead singer-songwriter Dave Matthews, a hobby painter and self-proclaimed mamma's boy, harbors no Eddie Vedder-ish loathing of fame, though. "I'm grateful as hell. I wouldn't mind people knowing our songs in Tahiti," says Matthews, "or even Outer Mongolia." hello all- i just wanted to quickly toss in my own thoughts on the video, before it is no longer a conversation topic... i wanted to wait until i had seen it a few times, and now i have a few thoughts to share. first, i like the video. i agree with whoever said that it was eighties-like. it reminded me a bit of some of peter gabriels videos. i think that the video had enought interesting images, and a general lack of ignorant band posturing to make it seem classy, without seeming too "artsy". at the same time, i think it appeals to the general mtv audience, and altho not everyone on the list would agree that this is a good thing, i think that it is in the best interests of the band, and was definitely there intention. why would they make a video that they didn't want anyone to like? i would also say that the song choice for the single, which hasn't been discussed much, was a very good one. they passed up the easy hit, in my opinion, that bowa, or sattelite would have been, thus saving those songs from being forever "spoiled" by overexposure, and used, what is, in my opinion, one of the lighter subject matter songs. i do like wwys, but i have to say that it is doesn't seem as "heavy" as other songs, nor is it as catchy. anyways...my point is that i think dmb made a very respectable decision, if they had anything to do with the decision, in using wwys. sorry if this is too late to be topical... -billTop Permalink
Any of ya'll ever heard of Indecision and know where I can find BTLGS? They are now basically defunct(play like 3 shows a year) but were bid and touring in C'ville when DMB was just geting started (pre-Tinsley era...91-92) I heard them while I was @ school at JMU, but have yet to scrape together even a shit-quality live show....are there any Indecision fans in da house? also... any pre-boyd BTLGS out there? Not that I don't like the guy...really I do! but I'm looking for OLD stuff...I saw him at a bar in Harrisonburg called Joker's (or maybe it was still Valentino's) any way, just trying to track down DMB oldies. TIA for any help JamesTop Permalink
to the Samples. I in no way meant to imply that the Samples are a superior band. DMB is a much superior band in concert, on c.d., lyricly, ect....... options than signing with R.C.A.. I can't say that I wouldn't have done the same, but than again if i had daves gifts as a composers and musician I don't know that i would have let some suit tell me how to play my music. anymore. Fuck ticketmaster, they added a five dollar charge ot my rem ticket.Top Permalink
If we decide not to compare the musical quality of these two groups there are important issues we can discuss on this topic. Didn't the Dave Matthews Band turn down a record contract ealier in their carear because it just wasn't the right time for them yet. Both groups, I guess, did a good job at building a following from the ground up. But I have never heard of The Samples before (outside this news group). I don't know what they sound like but I guess they are from Colorado. I heard about the DMB in fall of 1992 way out here in Minnesota. I don't know about you but if I was a musician I would like to make a living from it. If I was a really good musician I would like to make a shit load of money from it. I would like to make so much money that I could do whatever I wanted to do as a musician. I would not want to live the tortures of touring constantly in small hotels and playing in shitty clubs. I would want everyone to hear my music, because i'm a musician and that is what makes me happy. In fact the more people that love my music the happier I would be. Yeah it might be kind of nice to have a small group of devoted followers, but if you are at all aggressive you want more people to hear you. The DMB has a very successful independent release and then they sign with RCA. Because of their proven success with R2T they had a lot more leverage in signing a contract with RCA than they might have otherwise. I would hardly call the material on UTAD selling out. In fact they weren't even "popular" before they made it so it is hardly a sell-out. Now you may argue after their next album that they suck now, but if you liked them before UTAD than the album should be proff of that. When they went into the studio they were the same band as they were before signing the contract (a local band from VA). When they left the studio they were still the same band. You may argue now that with the success of UTAD they are different, but that has nothing to do with UTAD. The next question is will the DMB be different following the success of UTAD. The answer is, of course they will be different. Many things will change for them. They will be playing larger venues, the ticket prices will go up, they will be in more demand, etc. Just look at all the other bands that have had the exact same experience. Any band that has a massive increase in support from fans will change. And every time a band starts to become successful some people will _always_ say they have sold out. As if being "unknown" and small means they are more creative and correspondingly better. It does not take a genius to see that some people only like bands that are "unknown" to most of the people around them. Those same people could name a ton of bands that have sold out. Everyone is always worried about "selling out" whether its about their race, culture, music, etc. People define for themselves what it means to be "pure," and in the music buisness that means they cannot be popular. The very fact that a group is well liked by other people somehow makes the music less legitimate. Not to digress too much (although if you would like to see what I wrote on this subject email me), but strong ties of identity and community develop because of opression. In this case the fact that nobody knows about the DMB, or that people don't like it, makes your community or bond to DMB all the stronger. When that little 12 year old next door is freeking out over the DMB you feel somehow slighted or hurt. What was special and your own is none of those things now. So you go off and find another unknown gem of a musical star who you hope will not "sell-out." It has yet to be proven if the DMB will "sell-out," because as I mentioned before they have not produced a second album with RCA. Even then I would never call it selling out for the reasons I stated above. The Grateful Dead have said in interviews that they would love to have a #1 song. Do you think it would make people upset? Damn straight it would. Why do you think it does? These questions are all easy to answer if you just try to think about it a while. Why do you think the DMB has sold out? What does it say about your own beliefs about the music business or the kinds of music you like. There are many groups that do what they want to do even though they are popular. Yet we always create these consipracy theories about the music industry. Madonna is very popular and she seems to do whatever she wants to. REM's albums are changing all the time. Yet both of these two have "sold-out" by many people's standards. Hope I haven't bored you too much...but only 10% of you will get this far anyway :-) Peace! OK, Discussion of Dave's progress is likely, but none is needed. He is going to follow his (and the boys) feelings of what they want to do. Of course he has many decisions made for him, he has a manager. I am not speaking in virgin eyes, I have played with Dave and Gibb Droll, your next Corin (?) project to soon be heard of. Let them do what they they want, do not mcategorize them as better than the Samples. I personnaly do not appreciate their music, yet it appeals to others. I do not feel as if you can criticize a band that is doing well with themselves, it is not easy! Young people arriving ar shows is inevitable, and cannot be changed, ---so drop it. You were probably a young deadhead at once ( as mentioned from someone else), and think of what they thought of our young generation taking advantage of their band. Dave is not a majestical being, writing incredible words to live by. He writes of his experiences and feelings about his life, among others. He is excellent at communicating his music and feelings. Oh! heeeee daaa mannnn o right, don't get me wrong. I must stop rambling, I hope not to offend theee. Anyway, debatable topics I have seen are usually pointless, and Dave and the Boys are going to do their thing. Please let them role, and enjoy what you have of them, do not battle theeee, and attempt to repsect their direction and their achievements, they deserve it! PS Go see Scratchin' Jones in Richmond if you can at Memphis Cafe'. February 25. Also, and most importantly, Aquarium Res. Unit wednesday, january 25. I saw a band called "Leftover Salmon"? their teusday, and they are opening up for them. Crazy band, very much worth seeing, literally. Pss Brother Chaos is always late as shit to band stuff. Sorry for the non DMB content, but I've seen a number of messages concerning my fave band Leftover Salmon, so here's some of the upcoming dates. Hey Folks, "Trends" section titled "Rock's New Sturm and Twang." It is a two page layout with a big picture of Counting Crows on the first page, and four, smaller pictures of bands on the next, one of which is DMB. Here are roots-rock acts as potential breakthroughs this year, hoping that jangly, on-the-porch offerings from budding stars like Hootie & the Blowfish (Atlantic) and Dave Matthews Band (RCA), and from relative unknowns like Grant Lee Buffalo (Slash/Reprise), Wilco (Reprise/Sire), and the country-rocking Jayhawks (American), will quiet the feedback raor that has dominated the current wave of hot-new-things. . . . *TOURING. Acts like Hootie and Dave Matthews, both of whom sold thousands of albums before signing with majors, often develop sizable regional followings (as well as an onstage proficiency lacking in most alterna-baby bands) through incessant touring. "At Dave Matthews shows," says RCA director of artist development Tom Derr, "you have fans singing lyrics to songs that aren't even recorded yet!" VH1". If you would like to see the whole article, pick up the magazine or e-mail me personally and I will either send you a copy or post the whole thing. (anyone know if that is legal?) five band photos, there was not one that was not just a picture of the band members standing or sitting around some place. There is no reasonthat they couldn't take a sweet live shot of all of them jamming and send that out to people instead of the picture that we have all seen from the inside of the Recently cover and other places/posters/etc. . and Counting Crows is a little off-base, but I guess the the author (Nisid Hajari, to give credit where it is due) is entitled to give whatever interpretation that they see fit. Any thoughts?Top Permalink

crushes me! i like it, i don't love it, but i like it. the astute minaretter who compared it to peter gabriel's stuff is right on! this should make sense, dave loves peter gabriel. i'm also totally diggin' the 80's-ish feel of it. i know that's it's pretty wierd, but listen folks.....dave is one extremely wierd guy! and that's why we all love him! i hope everyone can just sit back and let all the motion and color of that four minute clip wash over you. and as for the live footage....it's great, especially 'cause they got dave giving boyd one of those sly and ever-so-dave-defining raises of the eyebrow that i love! was posted before, it's not gonna be a huge hit like that horrible "offspring" tune i couldn't get away from this summer. it's catchy enough and has a memorable refrain and it's fun, man! i wonder if the very low violin content also had something to do with the choice. the execs might have wanted to go easy on boyd for starters to avoid turning people off. I DO NOT THINK THIS IS COOL AT ALL! i just want to throw it out there and see what people think. i have a feeling that rca didn't want to let the brainless mtv viewer think this was a bluegrass or country band and therefore turn it off. there we go.....let the debate begin. ps i wish they had put a bear eating his head in the video! :( pps hey rick! i watched that mtv/pearljam thing about three times and i completely missed you! was lionel in line too? (in the same news show they had a spot about a rapper slick rick who's in jail for something, he's in the prison in my home town and they had pictures of it! so that means we were both kinda on mtv in the same show!) ;)Top Permalink
First of all, what the hell do you mean LAME studio songs? UTTAD and R2T are both incredible records. I write a review column for a small college newsletter, and UTTAD landed at #5 on my top 10 of 1994. One can never capture the magic of a great live show on album (when you record, you've got too much time to change things), but seriously? Also, thanks for the cool responses to my request for tapes. Your sympathy for my being shut out of the Dallas show was quite amusing (& thanks to Katy for offering me a tape!) Good to know I'm not the only FAN shut out of Dave shows. Still gettin' by... I need a title pholks, 9/11/92 DKE house. The song b/n "I'll back you up" and words words words "She said open up her head now let it out" words words words "Be known that you are loved and you will lie down (?)" words words words "I'll leave it to destiny to choose in which direction I shall go.. I'll leave it to destiny to choose in which direction I shall go" That's the best I can do, I've, to the best of my knowledge, never heard this song before. My dork roommate says it sounds like Muddy Waters, ,but I don't, so you decide who's right. Both the Samples and DMB kick ass! To me selling out occurs when a band compromises it's music in order to produce a hit. Making a song shorter and tighter (as with UTTAD) is not compromising the music. I'm not too particularly fond of UTTAD, but it was not a sell out album. I know a lot of you want to defend Dave, but degrading the music of the Samples is not the way to do it, they're a great band, period. They were also one of the first bands to jump up and help Dave when Anne was killed. So let's not let our loyalty drag us into a mud-slinging competition about who's band is better. If you like 'em, good, if you don't, equally good. My lurking friend Jeff says that the 2/17/94 Floodzone show has a kick ass "Warehouse", I've never heard it so I think he's bullshitting, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. My vote would be for the 5/31/93 Zolman's show, but I've never heard the election night or the other one so I can't say for sure. Eat a peach, drink a latte, lay in a dandelion patch, stare at the clouds, read a book, write a letter to a friend, spoon clare, watch the Simpsons, be silly, smoke a bowl, listen to good music, share good music. "This song I have...I kinda hate this song, but then I also kinda like this song. So sometimes I wanna puke when I hear this song, other times I don't wanna puke. But...uh...part of it is a puke song, part of it is not a puke song so listen for the good parts and when you hear the puke parts...everybody puke. Just don't puke on me." -Dave (intro to Spotlight) As always, for your convenience, smoking is allowed in my messages.Top Permalink

I was wondering if you could tell me how to get in contact with my friend (Her name slips me now, but I will take a peek through an old yearbook and get it for you later)...It would be much appreciated. hi I joined Minarets last year before I'd ever heard DMB. I listened to ya'll discuss them and then finally I got some tapes. Finally I saw them play in December. Now I'm doing the same with other bands (Everything, Edwin McCain etc.) I hear you talking about them, now I got to hear them. Someday I'll see them play. See, I'm here in California yet Minarets makes me feel like I'm in Virginia. Did you see the blurb in Time magazine? "UTTDAD...has poised its genteel hometown of Charlottesville, VA to become the next Seattle." I don't know about that, but I do know that some great music is happening and those on Minarets are hip to it. So, I'm humbly requesting that you continue to share with me. Anyone want to trade with me let me know. I have 30 hours of DMB and lots of assorted goodies. I'm looking for more DMB plus Shannon Worrell or TR3 or Gibb Droll or From Good Homes or any of the stuff we discuss that I've never heard. thanks, JOE Joe & LauraTop Permalink
Hey all... Does anyone know if this is true or not? When is he performing? Just a question. happened to the south? Very few North Carolina dates (i'm a disappointed dukie) i'm quite upset, haven't seen the band since the wake show... *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-Top Permalink
Ok, I had the coolest thought last night. I was in the Tiger Inn, our bar/grill deal here and there was a little two man acoustic thing playing and they broke into "Wild World." Suddenly it hit me, Dave should, and must, cover a little Cat Stevens. Most anything from his early career would do esp. "Trouble" or "Don't be Shy". The ultimate would be for DMB to pick up a keyboardist (keyboardists are always sitting in on shows) and break into a soothing "Sad Lisa", Peter where are you?? There is nothing in the musical world that can compare to the piano/haunting violin combo on that song. In case you haven't figured it out yet, Cat Stevens is my personal God and savior. The man was just awesome. Anyone agree that Dave should cover the Cat man? "Think of everything you've got, for you may still be here tomorrow but your dreams may not" -Cat Stevens "Father & Son" From here to eternity, smoking will ALWAYS be allowed in my messages.Top Permalink
I remember reading something somewhere about a band called Catfish Jenkins. They're from richmond I think...Can anybody give me any more info on them? They're coming into town this weekend and I'm thinking about checking them out...Thanks Brian Don't think, just go. Then you'll know why you didn't have a very tough decision in the first place. CJ's good stuff.Top Permalink
Hey y'all internet in its every facet - mail, irc, the web, etc. i would love to hear any ideas any of you have about what to write, or interesting anecdotes you have about the net. especially good stuff is people you have met over the net, or relationships that have formed, or a new interest that the net has spurred in you. while i would love to make the article entirely about phish.net, minarets, etc. but it's supposed to be general. while i'm not looking for "i met rosemary at the philly net gathering," a particularly interesting net story would be very welcome. please send all stuff to bdg11@columbia.edu. thanks a lot in advance, i really appreciate your help. peace, benTop Permalink
I couldn't possibly agree more with eric d's essay on selling out. If I had a dollar for every band that I 'discovered' when they were small and then subsequently became popular, I'd have about five dollars. But if the music is still good, I love the band anyway. The fun part is finding the band and being one of the first, but there is no merit in the act itself. If DMB became the next U2 or REM, so much the better. I would be able to see them again then, cuz currently they dont tour in Minnesota. But anyway. Tyler Zenner U of Minnesota, DuluthTop Permalink
Catfiash Jenkins is from Athens Georgia and well worth catching... well well well worth it... I would follew em if i had a chance... Go see them... alterna-baby bands) through incessant touring. "At Dave Matthews shows," says RCA director of artist development Tom Derr, "you have fans singing lyrics to songs that aren't even recorded yet!" this cracks me up!!! i guess dead and phish fans fall into this too, excpet its most likely 'songs that will never be recorded!'..... but i guess techincally they have been recorded by us....i guess this RCA guy has never been to see the same band more than twice.... hehehe *-----------------------------------------------------------------------* |Chris "Boofy" Buford '96 7 West Preston St. Lexington Va. 24450 | |v5.1 slimmed down .sig for Ben Sterling's convenience | *-----------------------------------------------------------------------*Top Permalink
i have to bitch once more about the dallas scene... when i went to see dave@trees the show sold out.. but i had tickets early.. im no fool.. (well) anyway, i took my little bro (age 16, almost 17) and a friend from outa town. when we got to the door, i gave my little bro my id, that said that he was of age and two other ids with pictures and proof of identity.. they still would not let him in.. ok no problem, i was trying to break the system anyway, but man my little bro is the bigest dmb fan in highschool in the south... he deserved to see them.. anyway, then i went in and they stoped my friend (from baton rouge), asked for id, which he had a louisiana license and is 20.. but they asked for TEXAS id and another form.. giveme a break.. this is not security clearence.. its a fucking concert.. they nevver let him in and all i got to say is that the whole situation sucked.. and should not have happend... ok.. enough bitchin for..me for the next two years.. turtle Ummm... This isn't a nightclub newsgroup. I seriously doubt that the band or management has any control over carding practices at their venues. I'm even more certain that the subscribers to this group have no control over said practice. My first flame- sort of. I feel somehow initiated. I'll go back to being nice tomorrow. Haven't smoked in far too long. Checked out boofyweb. Very nice. It does work. Nice photos of Clare and Chris (in tuxedo). Sharp. Gotta meet that murple(?) character.Top Permalink
between 10 o'clock last night and right now (8:00 tonight) i got 66 new messages. i don't like that. but oh well. 11-2-92 is stepping on it's heels though. to boofy, i like 7-14-93 alot, but i'd say that unless you really dig long jammin' wierded out tunes, it will bore you to pisswater. if dave likes peter gabriel videos, do you think dave will let slugs crawl around on his face? ____________________________________ "it is indeed a great gift of heaven\____________________________________ __________________________________ \_________________________________ and always remember, never get \ rick thompson involved in a land war in asia. \ stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.eduTop Permalink
for all those coming to the dartmouth show with the intention of taping, save yourselves a walk and leave your gear in the car. the programming board will not be allowing any recording devices into the hall. they are aware that dmb allows taping but since the other two bands don't, the programming board would have to hold all the decks in another room until dmb's set, and they don't want to be hassled with this. if you want more of an explanation, e-mail me personally and i'll forward you the reply i got. barrettTop Permalink
All this talk about crazy versions of Warehouse has made me a bit thirsty. I (actually, my roommate and I...he'll probably read this too) have about 15 bagbys, a modest collection, but not too shabby for two guys way up here in Maine. Anyway, I'd be interested in hearing one of these versions that are being talked about. Dates have been flying around, but I don't remember them. So, if anyone owns one of these (I'm being pretty vague, I realize) and is feeling generous, let me know and we can set up a trade. Oh, and does anyone out there in Daveland have a show with Anynoise/Antinoise on it? I *think* that's about the only original, that I know of, that I don't have. Thanks, Steve I can see three computers from this computer...Top Permalink
Hey all, it's really grown on me. I know that there have been a few shows in which she has performed with DMB and was wondering if anyone would be willing to trade them. I have only about 18hr of DMB, but they are all HQ. Thaks in advance, Dave(telvis@acs.bu.edu)Top Permalink
this taping thing is beginning to annoy me....if wasn't for us and our taping and making the "grassroots" following..DMB wouldnt be where they are now...i think RCA owes us....just bitter....anyway.. I recent have realized i have somewhere around 850 maxell points and i have no idea what to do with them...the answer is not give them to you..but where to i get one of those mail in for free cd etc thingies... *-----------------------------------------------------------------------* |Chris "Boofy" Buford '96 7 West Preston St. Lexington Va. 24450 | |v5.1 slimmed down .sig for Ben Sterling's convenience | *-----------------------------------------------------------------------*Top Permalink
Hey all- button now. Otherwise, I have an extra "foreigner"(non-Dartmouth student) ticket for the show Friday. I'm really looking for a traveling companion from Burlington, who would be willing to share gas money(about $15-20 round trip between the two of us) and I was planning on coming back to Burlington after the show. If you aren't from Burlington, but would still like the ticket, email me in case I don't find anyone - very likely. I'd much rather sell the ticket to another netter(for the $19 I paid for it) than to someone else(for the same price of course). Peace- *------------------------------------------------------------------------------* *------------------------------------------------------------------------------*Top Permalink
Hi - I'm looking for this past November's DMB show at The Ritz in Raleigh, NC... I've got a handful of DMB analog masters that I can offer for any potential trader to choose from, plus a ton of other HORDE/Dead material... Any help would be appreciated... -Dave DForbis@aol.comTop Permalink

Foul foul foul, no fair, but ok big boy lets swing...case in point...why is this a public discussion?.... dear marianne, this is just a personal note to you that the whole 713 of us are forced to wade through, because i want to vex you....don't you like me thanks for the honesty, bucko, yeah i can get pretty vexed, how 'bout some ground rules, is everything we ever posted or will post to each other public?...there are lines boundaries...your diabolical insistance on stepping over them can be endearing... hear that guys...? marianne loves personal posts (and gals...always forgetting the second sex...hmmmm, naughtynaughty.) thisis indeed true many good, private convos in the background thanks to disco for laying a fine beat and tony, cause lurkers are great listeners (gavin and eric should post something to him, he's in the ny click too guys, he is source of many a fine tape...and when not secretive, very nice) marianne is personal private gal, pretty complex assemblage... torching time talking rhymes in... we barely have time to react in this world let alone rehearse i don't think that i'm better than you but i don't think that i'm worse --ani, and to keep some musical relationship to this whole post otherwise thwarting my chastising intentt tho further Newbies who I owe NYE'93...9 individuals so far...i have limited use of a deck and am slowly churning them out...i'm going for first in first out, 'cept individuals who sent 100 mins. i gotta work out something special for ya'll. i won't decorate my love, marianneTop Permalink

I was just channel surfing. As I passed by eMpTyVee I heard Kennedy say "Remember Two Things." Naturally this caught my attention. She spoke of it selling 10,000 copies a month and how DMB now had a new CD. Blah, Blah, Blah. Then after a commercial break there was the video on no other than..."Alternative Nation." Before I had only seen it on "Dream time." It is working its way to a buzz clip. I have that terrible feeling. It is better than most videos. In fact, it is kinda growing on me. Just thought I would let ya'll know. Also, I was listening to #34 the other day on UTTAD. In the middle there is something said kinda faintly. Does anyone have any idea what that may say? Lastly, I would really like to het a copy of the 11/9/94 show in lexington. I have a very limited selection of tapes, but e-mail me personally and I will let you know my list. One more thing, I am sitting here listening to 1/20/93 from floodzone. In the middle of the intro to minarets, the music is stopped and dave says "I'm uh goofy! Thank you very much!" Does any body know what the deal with that is? I have not listened to this tape in a while, so I had forgaotten it said that. It is a good show! I'll stop rambling and go to sleep...tomTop Permalink
i have a copy of the lex show - not an original tho (one of the three bootlegs i own) and i'm happy to copy it for you if you like if you could copy some of yours for me (since i'm trying to build my bootleg collection) let me know thanks, cameronTop Permalink
