Atlanta gathering

DLALLISON@unca.edu Sun Dec 4 20:37:43 1994

Hey all! I am definitely looking forward to having a net gathering
before the Atlanta show. However, I agree with Keith when he said
that the Fox is not the place to do it. Dinner at a restaurant
or a park sound great...even both!!! Another possible suggestion
is somewhere in Underground Atlanta. Underground is an ultra cool
setting. It a "city" underneath Atlanta! It has many cool shops,
restaurants, cafes, clubs, etc. It is a clean environment. I know that
the word "Underground" gives it a dark and dank feeling, but it's
not like that. Again it is just a suggestion. A good person
to follow up on this conversation is my friend, college mate, and
fellow minaretter Alex. He is also going to the Fox show. He lives
in Atlanta so after reading this post as well as all other comments on the
gathering, I am sure he will make a post of his suggestions.
Won't you Alex??? Can't wait tofinally meet everyone. If you are
interested in the Underground idea, let me know by responding
to me via my personal E-mail address so we will mot clog up the
post.

please not 100.3

PARISIGRE@urvax.urich.edu Sun Dec 4 20:56:05 1994

Someone posted that Best of What's Around was played on 100.3 in Ithaca,
New York... is that the same as Z100.3 in New York City? If it is, those
are bad tidings indeed. By far the most exploitive, redundant Top 40 station
in the country...and damn annoying. It's hard not to be happy about that
kind of exposure, but I'd like to see DMB rise in popularity at a slightly
slower pace than being on that station's playlist.

Anyone know of any good Horde type bands playing in Florida between December
18 and 29th? Any info would be appreciated.

hey all.

fuelage, i usually lock the pump so it stays pumping automatically.
then i dig thru my pockets to see when would be the legal time to
stop the pump due to the ammount of moola in my pockets. well....
today i went to the station and BEFORE I COULD EVEN COUNT how much
change was in my pocket i knew that the price on the gas meter had
already exceeded what was in my pocket.....uh oh........um..um....
can you spare any change ?.....PEACE.

BEATLES or LED ZEPPELIN. Those are are teh exception! Only a few bands
 can create only great songs!

Beg Pardon?? The Beatles and Led Zeppelin created only great songs? As
far as I am concerned DMB has created ONLY great songs...Their WORST song
is comparable to some of the best of popular groups these days. I can't
think of ONE DMB song that I can't groove too..I like them ALL..

I will not disagree with you, but when DMB reaches the level of the
Beatles and Led Zep as far as number of albums and hits, then you can
compare DMB to them. Untill then I'm sorry to say that DMB is a couple
of steps behind! Sorry!

Comparing damaba to...

djb@mars.gtcc.cc.nc.us Mon Dec 5 00:59:07 1994

There have been a few messages recently discussing whether or not it's
appropriate to compare Dave Matthews to Led Zep or the Beatles.

It's definitely ok to compare them. If you compare # of
songs/albums/hits, it's not necessarily a FAIR comparison, because Led
Zep and the Beatles both produced albums for a number of years, while
damaba is just getting started. It's definitely fair to compare
damaba to ANYONE as far as songwriting and performing is concerned.
Dave's songs are easily on or above the level of anyone else in
popular music, past or present. The emotion, and meaning, to his
songs is undeniable.

I don't believe that # of followers/#of hits/# of albums/# of anything
is a reasonable way to judge an artist's ability to perform his/her
art. Quality is NOT equal to quantity, and never will be. Popularity
is NOT a way to judge quality. The only way to judge the quality of
art, is to critically look at it for yourself, and decide whether or
not you feel it is good art. By my standards, damaba produces much
better art than Led Zeppelin ever did, and is better than all of the
early work by the beatles, and better than all but the best of the
later work from the beatles.

Re: DMB/Phish in San Jose, CA

gjb@ccnet.com Mon Dec 5 01:35:55 1994

The first song was Seek Up! This set was twice as good as the one in
Davis. It really smoked. The place (about 6 or 7 thousand) was going
crazy. I'm really surprised they didn't encore.

I was standing next to these guys during Dave's set, who between songs
were really ragging on Dave. The were saying "You suck," or "We want
Phish!" They seemed like they were "grunge" type people. They only
piped up maybe once after Watchtower. The band really won the crowd
over. I have a feeling their next trip to the Bay Area will find them
in considerably larger venues than the clubs they've been playing!

My friends we're big Phisheads, but this one girl loves Dave. She went
to Seattle, Portland, somewhere else in the Pacific NW, and then flew
down here to California to see Davis and San Jose, not for Phish, but for
Dave!

DMB at the Great American Music Hall

@Xenon.Stanford.EDU:malachi@leland.stanford.edu Mon Dec 5 06:25:58 1994

my four-show weekend is over (mixed feelings). Anyway, I got a chance to
talk to Dave for a while before the show and I confirmed a few things.
First of all, he heavily supports our net, and told me a story about how he
told the "record company executives" to "fuck off" when they mentioned
disbanding the net. Also, he said that they've been working a lot on Get
in Line, True Reflections, and Drive in, Drive out. Furthermore, he told
me when I asked that his favorite interpretation of Recently deals with
interracial dating (thus the Recently cover), but that someone else
suggested that. It was originally about a woman he dated who was very
disposed to public display of affection, anywhere, and that after he got
used to it, he loved it. Finally, and most exciting of all, I told him
about the Atlanta gathering I'm trying to plan (keep the suggestions
rolling in!), and he said that he might be interested in coming, if we did
it early enough!!! If that's not a good reason to participate, I don't
know what is!

Anyway, here's tonight's setlist (approx. 2 hrs, 45 min.):

Typical Situation 1/4

Back to my review of the show tonight...
If you've ever been to the GAMH in San Francisco, you know how beautiful it
is (very ornate decorations), as well as how small. The climax of the show
for me began with Get in Line and ended with Typical Situation. Get in
Line was great to hear (as it's new and it's a fun song), especially since
Dave promised me that he'd play it. It's undergone quite a few changes
since 10/15, the first version I heard (he got rid of singing "Get in line"
evidently), but, trust me, it still rocks. True Reflections was great to
hear again (probably the best version I've heard) but not near as much of a
surprise as in Santa Cruz. Say Goodbye is always wonderful, 'nuff said,
and Dave gave it a little spoken intro tonight. Minarets ROCKED! It was
the first time that I had heard it live, and it's so much better than on
R2T. Dave made his trademark pre-Minarets noises with Carter giving him a
kind of vocal rap base. Typical Situation was very pretty, a surprise for
me because I don't really like the UTTAD version. Finally, the encore was
cool too, with yet another beautiful rendition of Christmas Song (it
sounded much different with Carter joining Dave) as well as a killer
Watchtower that had the entire crowd bouncing up and down.

last couple of nights, and Dave gave us plenty of Davespeak. I was very
amused towards the beginning of the show, when some guy in the first row
yelled a loud "DAVE!", trying to get his attention, and Dave leaned over
and yelled a loud "WHAT?!" right back.

in Santa Cruz, and the two lists were remarkably similar. Oh well...

BTW, everyone listen to I'll Back You Up lots over the next two weeks,
it'll help get you through your exams. And if anyone has the tape of a
show with IBYU, I'd love to trade for it.

the very nature of this line disturbs me a great deal. why would rca want
to disband us? how could they disband us. i'd have to say that if they
walked into uvm and tried to turn off listproc, they'd be breeching some
serious freedom of speech rights and would be slapped (by us, uvm, and dave)
with a solid lawsuit.

don't look at it as saying that he's not doing it anymore. look at it
as he's not doing it right now. those quotes aren't part of the song,
they are just something he likes to throw into the song. sometimes he
feels like doing it, sometimes he doesn't. :) something he hasn't
quoted in forever, though, is norwegian wood.
as for the overall talley of these shows, i'm fairly impressed. i can't
remember if the stagnation threads were over the summer or not, but at
any rate, it shows a true freshness to the band. though on the surface
the setlists look remarkably the same, the only song to make it all
four nights was ants, which is to be expected.

The Atlanta Gathering

AMZENDEL@unca.edu Mon Dec 5 11:05:33 1994

My 2 cents on the atl gathering is that we should get a some hotel rooms that
are on a marta line. That way (if you guys want) we could party before the
show, hop on marta, enjoy and evening with dmb, hop back on marta, party some
more. However, this can be expensive, but i want to go all out on this nite.

I NEED AN ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION, PLEASE. Who will be taping the 12/27 show
in Atl.??????????????????????????????????????????? I need to know so i can ask
yoiu that if I bring tapes and a sase to the show, will you be so kind to tape
them and send them to me!!!!

Please respond!

V-Day Get Together and Halloween!!

sctm@vt.edu Mon Dec 5 13:11:22 1994

Just picture it,
Song, the symphony could rock that song, picture big kettle drums banging
out the end and the cymbol player guy, it will be beautiful! Dave will
loose his voice again and the next few shows will suck, let's hope not.
But I think the Halloween Song would be phenominal as well as Minarets and
Say Goodbye.
it's so rare that I get to dress up, so I must take advantage of this
opportunity. I like the 3rd Street idea about getting the balcony. I think
this is a perfect place with lots of room. I don't know if we need to
reserve it, but if we do we should figure out how many people are going to
show up, anyway! Something to think about.

Rhyme and Reason!

sctm@vt.edu Mon Dec 5 13:30:42 1994

One quick question,
no date, but it sounds completely different. Carter opens up wiht a pretty
cool little drum solo and then Stefan comes in with this really funky bass
line. Then finally Boyd and Leroi. It sounds really jazzy. When Dave plays
youu can barely hear that it's the same song. The lyrics are different
also. The point where Dave now sings, "my head won't leave my head alone",
. ."
get back to me. I would love to know if it was common, or rare. I liked
it better that way I think, anyway hope to hear from someone who knows what

Well, obviously you haven't been touching up your knowledge recently
because you would have known that #34 AND #36 are both songs. #36 is the
one he's been playing in concert recently, has words, and is not on the
CD. #34 is the beatiful masterpice, is a rare gem to hear live, used to
have owrds, and is on the CD. I'm not professing any dave knowledge, just

#34 and #36 are two different songs. #34 is on UTAD, #36 isn't. The
only signif. to the #s is that they are the 34th and 36th songs dave wrote.

I prefer EVERY dave matthews song to MOST other music. I have yet to hear
a song by damaba that I didn't like. Some I like better than others, but
since I only see them every few months, I enjoy the songs they play, whatever
they decide to play. It's not a religious thing, they just play the music
the way I like to hear it.

I'm going to restrain myself here and simply say that in case it isn't
universally known around these parts, the Dave Matthews Band has two songs
that are titled by numbers, #34 and #36. They both exist, they are QUITE
different, and they are both great tunes.

allgood@umich.edu Mon Dec 5 14:30:27 1994

Hey carly, goo one, but you are absolutely wrong on disagreeing with the
song #36. It was kinda funny how you rambled on about knowing dave so
well and it was obvious from the beginning that you made a blatant
mistake in the song title. There are two songs, #34 and #36. The later
is a tribute to Chris Hani. (Hani,Hani,Hani). Sorry for making it
public, but, it thought it would be necessary since you tried to profess
your knowledge on the net. Bite your tongue, and try not to make this
kind of mistake in the future, for, you sounded pretty stupid. (Was this
a little harsh?) I just found it kinda amusing.

My first message!!!

halls@alleg.EDU Mon Dec 5 14:31:14 1994

Howdy to you all out there!

This is my first message with you guys and it's really weird to be
writing to lots of people that I don't even know! But I have done
much stranger things in the past....

I first wanted to ask some really stupid questions. I'm not really
all that familiar with DMB and I just wanted to know more about them
(is that even the right pronoun to use???). I've heard them on a
couple of different occasions and thought that Dave sounded
incredible along with the rest of the band, but I don't have any of
their stuff and I sure as hell couldn't come up with any kind of
lyrics like I notice that most of you do (even if it IS from The
Cure!!). I hope that I'm not earning your ridicule for saying that,
just know that I am making a serious attempt at making myself less
ignorant!!

So I guess that because this stuff is completely relevant and that
this is the whole purpose of this mailing list thing, I thought that
now would be as good a time as any to make a complete fool of myself
by asking!!!

So, I wish you all sunshine-y days and know that it doesn't just come
from the outside!!!!

Sarah (alias Queen of the Damned)

y'all-- it's #34, not 36. i constantly run inot people at shows or these
net deals who profess their insurmountable knowledge about dave matthews and
they go on and on about this and that, some of it interesting, and some
redundant and a boy tells you all to spell dave matthews right when he can't
even spell stefan's name, and all i want to throw in, after sitting back and
watching for a while, that the song is #34. i know this because carter told
me a couple months ago why this number was so important to him. not to get
picky, but everybody else does, so why not join in...

Aren't #34 and #36 two DIFFERENT songs? One (#34) is an instrumental on UTTAD,
and #36
(which I've never heard, but is in the lyrics file) is unreleased.

#36 (sweetbriar, 2-25-94)

which would explain the chorus.......
but needless to say this version needs work, as clear as it is...
so decide as you will...}

with you on my mind so heavy and so hard
i don't know quite everything
you make me think of a better thing
better things to fill my day with
but they don't mean to go
please don't be too bad with me, god
please don't be too good...
let some women's light, women's light
chain my hands with me singing
hani hani, come and dance for me
whoa, whoa, sooner there
hani hani, come and dance for me
only the brave
hani hani, come and dance for me
[feeling the night]
hani hani coem and dance for me

I thought there was a #34 and a #36, #34 being the one on the album, and
#36 being one with lyrics that I've heard them play (and introduce as
#36) at quite a few shows. Maybe I'm wrong.... Anyone else got an idea?

have never seen them but would like to. What will their response be in
Chicago? Have they played Chicago other than the show at the Vic in November?

travelling all the way to wait just to see dave sing

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Mon Dec 5 16:04:28 1994

but.. he did do a norweigian wood at the wake forest. as a whole recently
wasn't as good as lex, but that was worth it. :)

THAT'S dedication. :)

I wonder if they've thought of/tried to do the whole song as a cover.. I
don't want to start another comparison thread (ie - the stuff about the
beatles and led zep), but I really do think they could do some awesome covers
of beatles tunes...

personally, i'd like to hear them do all of norwegian wood to the tune
of recently. THAT would be weird.

but i have this feeling that dave's humility is going to keep us from
ever seeing anything like that. he absolutely worshipped the beatles
for something like 8 years of his life. the whole reason he never did
me & julio again is because he felt he wasn't doing s & g justice, so
there's no telling how nervous he'd feel when it comes to anything by
the beatles.

I don't want to start another war, but it just seems funny that you would
post this to the net without knowing that there is a song #36 AND a song
#34. What can I say, they like naming their songs after non-prime even
numbers between 30 and 40 (that means, coming up #32 and #38!!!!!)

Ben

oh yeah, and about the led zepplin and beatles comparison...to the young man
who said he loved ALL of dave's stuff, i just want to say that's it's OKAY
not to. in order to have really yummy songs you have to have less than yummy
songs and, i admit, they do (i.e. lover lay down). and it's quite alright not
to orgasm after each individual song. that's all.

Um, Carly, when you say that the song is #34 and not #36, do you mean on UTTAD
or that there is no song titled #36? If it's the latter you're intending, I
think YOU need to brush up on a little Dave knowledge. DMB has been playing #36
for quite some time now and it is by no means the same song as #34. If it was
the former you were intending then I apologize. I'm sorry to waste everybody's
time with this li'l piece o' obvious info but I'm trying to avoid studying. I
agree with those who think that we should all meet before the V-day show and
the place w/ the balcony sounds tres cool. Since I shelled out $95 I think I'll
go ahead and throw on a tie & jacket. I'm really looking forward to this show,
and it better be good considering I'll have two months on anticipation built up
beforehand, but I'm expecting that it will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
I hope we can get this li'l pre-show social event going, I'd really like to
meet all o' you folks (even the ones who flame me, which should be most of you)
especially since I missed my opportunity at Lex. Well, back to the hellish
existence that is the last week of classes. Does anyone else have a shitload of
make-up work to due before exams?

newbie questions...

jugular@rhf.bradley.edu Mon Dec 5 16:37:39 1994

hey low all-
i'm just a new guy around here, and i've got a couple questions for any
of the veterans out there. i've never seen dave live, and i was
wondering who sings the harmony vocals...on i'll back you up, i think,
and on sattelite, it sounds a lot like dave singing both the harmonies
and the leads...is this a studio overdub, or is there another singer in
the band?

a second question...i was wondering how i could get a hold of a couple of
really good dave live tapes. i'm wondering if anyone has a good copy of
any of dave's acoustic shows, which i understand he has done with tim
reynolds. i'd also like to pick up the best show any of you may have.
i'm not really interested in starting a whole collection, i'm just
curious to hear some of the unreleased material, and how some of the
songs are interpreted live...
so.....if there is any kind soul out there who could help me out, that
would be great...i don't really have much to offer in trade...the only
boots i have have already been posted to this list by a friend of mine
(HI TJ!), but in case anyone didn't see, and is interested, i have a
really good double disc cd of u2 live at the rosemont horizon in chicago,
on april 27th, 1987, and a copy of the rem mtv unplugged show, which
contains the full show, not just the songs on mtv. for any u2 fans out
there, i also have something called "unreleased album", which is a
partial copy of the stolen demoes from the achtung sessions.

if anyone knows any of these answers, or is interested in anything,
please drop me a line...
thanks

impressed. I had high hopes, too, from this Net's glowing descriptions and

Seek Up, Best, Rhyme, Watchtower, Recently, True Reflections, Ants

Watchtower and Ants. Dave used the line about cheese and, at one point,
said, "We're pretty nervous 'cause we don't know y'all."
simple fill by Carter, towards the end.

the crowd seemed to know most of the songs. A row of screaming girls in the
front row singing along must have made him feel at home. They jammed! The

Seek Up
Nancing Nancies (with odd vocal improv intro before Could I Have Been...)
Warehouse
Best
Rhyme
Jimi Thing
Satellite (with Dave noodling around the theme to open, teasing the crowd)
Get in Line (first time I heard this - neat song)
True Reflections
"One thing leads to another and we're fucking the night away. So, here's a
song about it,"
Say Goodbye
Minarets (features Tomorrow Never Knows quote as intro)
Typical Situation
Tripping Billies
Recently (Norwegian Wood quote intro)
#36 (yes! my favorite song. This song is really evolving)
Ants

Christmas Song
Watchtower (and the crowd goes wild)

I noticed 'Recently' again last night had some quirks. Just before the last
"Yeah, Yeah" they brought it down to a brief solo by Carter. The crowd
seemed to love Boyd, above whom we were seated. We could see Dave turn
around and smile and make faces at Carter.

ami missing somthing? when did satelite gain an intro?

As far as I can tell, the 'old' intro was where he played the chorus part
('winter's cold...') and then one line of 'look up look down all around
sa-tel-lite', and into the riff... but maybe he just means the riff over and
over as the intro...

that would be NEATO.

Carly, you may love my kerouac, but, er... i think you might be a bit
confused. There are 2 songs. #34 and #36. #34 is on the CD (sans vocals).
#34 is dedicated to miguel vasquez).

and didn't rick or some other knowitall (tee hee) conjecture that the numbers
simply were the number of the song? for instance (get ready for some math
now) #34 is the 34th song the band wrote?

Anyone else remember this? Better yet, anyone have a tape of it? I wouldn't
mind trading for a copy of this show. That particular excerpt would also make
a handsome addition to the Dave Speak file.

carpenter center shitty? i doubt it.

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Mon Dec 5 18:30:17 1994

Am I still dazed, or did somebody else out there just shell out $95 for two
really shitty seats for the Valentines Day show?
1)if you payed the $47.50 price than it's impossible that your seats are
shitty in even the carpenter center context of the word shitty. and on
2)the carpenter center is anything but shitty. this isn't your avg
venue. we're talking an opera hall here, where the richmond symphony
orchestra plays whenever it plays. it's the sort of place where many
an architect worked with 19th and early 20th century labor intensive
ethics to make the place as perfect as possible.
there's pretty much no way to describe just how much shittier $53 seats (not)
to nye are going to be. the only advantage there is free beer, which
still shafts underage people (not) and people who choose not to drink.
this is also dave matthews with the richmond symphony orchestra, so you
need not bitch until your actually there and still not satisfied. (NOT)

show, but I kind of wish that I had known ahead of time what I was going to be
taken for. The sad thing is, I bought them on Saturday, relatively early, and I
i bought mine on saturday afternoon around 1, and i'm perfectly happy with
mine, so i have no clue where you are coming from on this.

MTV

sayat.1@postbox.acs.ohio-state.edu Mon Dec 5 19:54:24 1994

Along with DMB's "What Would You Say", I guess we can throw another HORDE
band video into the future MTV buzz bin.

Tonight Rusted Root is in concert here in Columbus (for 5 bucks!) and
earlier today they had a nice little interview on WWCD 101.1 FM. They said
that they just finished making a video for "Send Me On My Way", which
includes (did I hear right?) Art Garfunkel and space aliens?!!

Anyway I'm hoping that by making these videos, DMB and Root don't follow the
Spin Doctors in their descent into cheeziness.
Instead I'm hoping that they'll make videos with integrity like Big Head
Todd and Blues Traveler (whose videos, I am happy to say, did not blow up
despite some MTV airtime). By not blowing up, these bands have stayed close
to their loyal fan base and seem content with just that. I mean how many
other bands encourage you to tape their shows etc?

Peace out,
Jon

Tape Date Needed

sctm@vt.edu Mon Dec 5 20:08:29 1994

Well,
question. Now I thought I would leech a little more info. I don't have the
date for the show that that version of the song is on. I got the tape while
I was in high school and it was such an awe inspiring event that I wasn't
even concerned about where or when it was taped, it didn' matter, it was
Dave On Tape!!!
collections.

Doug Wannabaker from idecision plays instead of Peter
Before he plays I'll Back You Up, he says "because the pagentry implies we
should be in loud and crazy moods I thought I would play a love song,
theres no better reason, no better time."
In the middle of I'll Back You Up, Stefan has super high bass solo, I mean
it sounds like he's playing down around the 10th or 12th fret, it's
just he and Dave playing.
They begin Ants Marching by playing the 2001 theme (awesome!)
Before he plays Warehouse, he grumbles, "This is the Warehouse, broken
windows!"
They thank everyone for bringing their "bar hopping little frenzy down
here", I don't know where here is?

Recently

Well, The Dave Matthews Band has made it onto their first (I think)

produced a Christmas CD of local artists. The last song on the CD is, you
guessed it, Christmas Song, the exact version from R2T. If anyone is
interested in picking up what sounds like a fine yule tide collection it is
available only at the Chesterfield Town Center's Information "Kiosk". I

sure. Anyway, it's probably like 12 or 15 bucks, goes to charity I think,
and I have no idea who else is on it, but there is definitely some music
from The Nutcracker in addition to the usual Christmas faves. No, I don't
think the one DMB song will persuade me to buy it, but it sounds nice.

numerology andall...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Mon Dec 5 21:43:34 1994

As I noted, he did quote Norwegian Wood. I had never before heard him
quote Tomorrow Never Knows, however. "Turn off your mind, relax and float
down stream..."

wow. wowowowowowowowowowow. WOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!
does anybody know the last time dave did a tomorrow never knows quote?
to me it's such an important part of the song, and in the period b/w
him quoting it and creating the rap, i felt that minarets kind of lost
something. (or did he quote tnk during satelite. what did you say?)

anyway...

  Dave is clearly not stagnating.
they played halloween?

"they'll get bigger than Phish." She may be right.
well, turns out that phish nye tickets are the hottest tickets selling
in the country right now in terms of scalpers r us. the cheapest you
will find them is $150. dave will be bigger than phish, but i have
a feeling that by then it won't be easy to compare the two.

(yippee!!)

well, first of all, i'd have to say i'm damn glad i'm not digestified
anymore. the last digest (this digest?) must be absolute hell and
all talking about the differences b/w #34 and #36 (something that is
CLEARLY, CLEARLY, CLEARLY, CLEARLY, AND EFFECTIVELY explained IN DETAIL--
if you are clueless, please inform me or daniel blanchat and we will
be happy to send you a copy.)

BUT, did you know that there actually did used to be a #32? i'm pretty
sure it was cry freedom before it gained lyrics, but i may be wrong.
but i know there used to be a #32, and i think their was a #33 at one
point. anyway, somebody in the know tell us what song was premiered
between #34 and #36. (hmmmmmmmmmmmm.....maybe i can figure this out.
#34 was brought out in april or so of '93 right after miguel died.
i know #36 was played 7-27-93, so what came between the two?)

my guess is granny. even though granny came before christmas song
originally, they didn't really set it up full band until april/may
1993. anyone concur, disagree?

so, granny is #35.
i suppose that could make christmas song #33.
(we're eventually going to get anal enough to want all of this
useless info in the dave.base, so why not start now?)

rick.. i think i've got a recently somewhere with a norwegian wood in
it.. but i don't kno wthe date exactly or know if i actually do maybe i
should go find out but i have no spare time. ARGH!

davebase? what's this all about? is this not the first sign of this thing
or did a sneaky angel snatch a previous msg about this from my inbox when
i wasn't looking? huh? i guess the 'warehouse' that was being compiled
by blake has not been integrated with this davebase thing did both of
these people know each had already started this task?

someone asked who sang the backup vocals on satellite and i'll back you
up and that be carter 'the man' beauford. and i'll tell you a funny
little story about carter and his backup vocals (i dont' think this is
breeching any kind of ethics).
with his playing as well as when he's nto playing. he has always been one
of my favorite band members to spend time with (discounting the leroi
bourbon drinking story of dec '93). regardless whenever possible at a
show i always spend a little time with carter if time permits. at the
brown's island show of late jul '94 carter and i spent nearly an hour
jsut babbling to eachother little stuffs over evian and orange juice.
(everybody loves my pearls!) and he said to me then, that he had been
singing the backup vocals to satellite wrong for years and never known it
until steve lillywhite said to him during the bearsville UTTAD recording
[insert carter imitating lillywhite's english accent] 'carter? what are
you bloody singing back there?' or something to that matter... hee hee it
was so funny.. carter was laughin lots as he told this story.. and he
started to sing where he'd been fuckign up...'winter's gone...' and i
sang along with him, 'spring erases'... when he just stared at me
agahstly! he then hit me in the arm and said, 'dammit clare.. you even
know the right words!' he had been singing 'winters gone, spring is here'
for nearly (what.. say about...)3 years?! hee heee it's so funny and i
thought i'd share one of my many band member frolics with you all so you
could also share in the fun. fun fun fun.

i think i've babbled too much.
hee hee
i love that adam!!
thnks to all out there who love me......(it sure makes a person feel good
and you all know who you are and those general others stuffss....)

more clarifying on older version of songs....

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Mon Dec 5 23:30:02 1994

In the middle of I'll Back You Up, Stefan has super high bass solo, I mean
it sounds like he's playing down around the 10th or 12th fret, it's
just he and Dave playing.
sorry, scott, but this won't narrow it down. this is the way the song was
done before dave handed the solo section over to tim reynolds on r2t.
this is something i miss.

They begin Ants Marching by playing the 2001 theme (awesome!)
Before he plays Warehouse, he grumbles, "This is the Warehouse, broken
windows!"

and this isn't going to narrow it down either. they used to due
2001--ants alot, and some of them were pretty crazy. some of the
fill from peter on big league chew fills it out nicely.

i'd have to say the key to identifying this tape would be the setlist
combined with the fact that doug wannamaker played the show. anyone know?
also, if you don't find out within the next week or so, go ahead and
inform everyone just exactly when you got the tape, so that everyone
knows the cutoff date for how old the tape is.

hello minareters i posted this here at the radford news group and then
thought there might be some people on the net who might be interested.
i can pick people up who are along the way (exit 109 on 81 to 66 to 495
to 270). for those in the DC area who are interested in this the
signing is from 5-9 on sat. at Zenith Comics in Olney MD (call them at
301-774-1358 for details). I don't work for Zenith i'm just really good
freinds with the manager. so if you're interested let me know.

 hello all
At around 10am sat. I'm going to be makeing a 4 1/2 hour trek to
DC to meet James O'Barr (writer/artist/creator of the crow comic [yeah
the same comic that was later made into a movie]). I was planning on
going with a freind but he has finals early monday that he has to study
for. I'm looking for someone to help with gas money. It should be
about $30 total (split that's about $15 not to bad). The main thing is
that I'm not only going to this signing but i'm acctually working it
(it's good to have connections). So i'm going to have to be there from
4pm till about 10pm (the signing is from 5-9 but i need to be there
early and might be there late). I have no idea if i'm speanding the
night in DC so if you need to be back by oh 4am sunday we could possibly
make it. If anyone is interested let me know via email
 (msweeney@muselab.ac.runet.edu) or phone (703-831-2560). bye

jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Mon Dec 5 23:41:26 1994

Well, The Dave Matthews Band has made it onto their first (I think)
compilation album.

nope. they got (of all tunes) jimithing on the last edition of cmj
(college music journal)'s certain damage. this is prolly why it was
heard on whfs last week. personally, i find this more terrifying than
them making that z 100 station or whatever. cmj are the ones who turned
nirvana, pearl jam, the breeders, and whatever other grunge suits your
fancy so monstrous.

Nobody get excited, but WVGO, 106.5 in Richmond, has
produced a Christmas CD of local artists. The last song on the CD is, you
guessed it, Christmas Song, the exact version from R2T. If anyone is
interested in picking up what sounds like a fine yule tide collection it is
available only at the Chesterfield Town Center's Information "Kiosk". I
think a kiosk is somewhere in between a booth and a pavilion, but I'm not
sure.
it's a four sided information center and the term originates in france,
i believe. (hellooooooo, mr kings dominion...:)

Gotta go...

(did they put the jingle bells produced by fighting gravity? if any of
you ever go to a record store with a listening bar, check out bobsled,
from back when they were called boy o boy, and listen to their recording
of jingle bells. it's a classic.:)

anyway, i for one trust wvgo's tastes more than just about any other radio
station ever mentioned on this net (except chico's :), so i'd trust it.
at the same time, you have to like x-mas carol's, but eric e. stanley (prime-
time dj)has been introducing dave band at the flood zone and on brown's
island since i was a wee young'n.

thanks

I know Ben's mentioned that all posts are archived (on netspace.org?), and
that's where the minarets history posts have come from.. Are the digests
archived as well?

ok, now for my whoa...
I had Shannon Worrell's Three Wishes on.. not really listening to it, but
just as background type music.. Then, for the last 20 seconds of song #6,
Snakebite, I nearly stopped breathing. I don't want to start any rumors
here, but if anyone who has the album or knows the song knows if there's any
reason to start _assuming_ things, it'd be interesting to hear.

I'm being vague on purpose, sorry.. It's either one hell of a story or would
be one hell of a rumor.. :)

Halloween was part of the encore on 11/17 at the Fox in Boulder.

And as for the dave conversations about trying to get Drive In Drive Out
back into circulation - he's pulling your leg :) (he he)
He told me back in May, the weekend before they went to Bearsville to start
recording, that he was planning on gettin DI/DO onto the CD. I, who at the
time had never heard the song, asked why it wasn't played live very often -
or at least the times I had seen them in Colorado. He said that it had
some tough changes, and the band needed to work on it some more. Ahh,
wishfull thinking.....

Take care (of) everyone,

drop me a line, and I would gladly trade two or maybe all three for a=20
Dave/Tim, or Dave solo/Band like 5/7?/94? The release of UTTAD... I=20
haven't gotten out of my pajamas, and no it's not because of....

=09Other notes... the infamous black guitar, which was rumoured to=20
be a Washburn, well... I don't know if it's the same one, but I played a=
=20
black Gibson accoustic with Boyd. :)

=09Boyd is a really nice guy, same goes for Leroi, and I only=20
briefly met Carter and Stefan. He talked with me for a while about=20
music, the bands success, and just whatever, then he sang a song with=20
guitar, and I played harmonica. Boyd has a beautiful voice, and whatever=
=20
it lacks in being perfectly on tune, it's makes up for in tone and=20
feeling. I wouldn't mind hearing more of him in the future...

=09The video was produced/written/directed? by the director of=20
Aliens 3, just a little piece of info I picked up... I haven't seen it,=20
but hope Dave doesn't dive into a furnace/enginewhatever at the end.. :)

=09I'm really realizing now how much I enjoy DMB... the ride from=20
Eugene to Seattle, (300 mi), was nothing, listening to Dave the entire=20
way.

=09I really doubt these guys will get mega famous.. I just doubt=20
it.. even with all the promo they've got going. Dave says it best on=20
11/29 "I really like playing in small places like this. Brings back=20
memories of old times, knowhatimean?" That's paraphrased, but I just=20
think they'll find their happy medium.. no press hungry rock-star waxes=20
nostalgic over small venues... does just thinking about how purely cool=20
DMB is just make anyone else see hope for the world? :)

#36 is about relaxing....among other things. i think a few of you who've
recently posted (i.e. kyle and kev-q) could strongly benefit from listening
to it a couple of times. i had phishnet flashbacks after reading my last
digest. we're all friends here....(by the way, a ticket for n.y. would be
greatly appreciated!) and the "who knows dave better" contest is most uncool.
carly, i will back you up.......
:-) sara

seriously. what are the lyrics to aud lang syne?

especially since %99.9 of this net already know the difference between
#36 and #34. we may be seeing more posts from people who are unclear
send a little note to 'em personally.

besides, we all know that clare would win such a contest, anyway. :)

i'm not sre about christmas song and cry freedom..

but about #36.. this is where it gets confusing.
i've got a tape with filler from 6/27/92 whish has #36. and a #36 with
oteal burridge and mike darrum for that matter!
i was originally quering as to if this tape could have been from 7/27/93,
but i'm assured by my source that it is not. and i truszt him completely..

i question your sources, too, seeing as they all looked around and confused
and stuff on 7-27-93 as if to say "well, hey, that's a pretty neat riff
dave is kicking out there, let's see what we can do with it." i also
remember dave standing very close to oteal trying to show him what it
was he was doing.

and i never would've guessed that true reflections was #33, but i can
see that, if cry freedom was #32.

so knows what #1 was?

wishful thinking? and this conversation was in may?? what happened to
the three months this summer when they spent in studios with all the
intention in the world of "working on songs."

he's pulling your leg. drive in, drive out isn't that hard to play,
at least not for musicians like them. it's a little driving, but
considering how tight they used to play it in '92, i don't think it
would take them too much effort.

Either I'll Back You Up or Song that Jane Likes. I'll check my Davetalk-

Sorry to post this on the net. Jason & Dusty, I got the tapes yesterday,
thanks. I haven't had a chance to listen to them yet (I was busy making you
tapes Dusty) but I'm sure they'll be mighty tasty indeed. Dusty, that setlist
looks great!! Oh, Rick, I've never been to the Carpenter Center so I don't
know what it's like. When I wrote that post I was going on the Ticketbastard
map of the place. But from what I've heard about the set up, my seats are
actually REALLY good, like fourth row Loge, so now I'm really excited. I stand
corrected on that issue. Well, y'all have fun with finals. Dusty, keep an eye
out for those tapes around the beginning of next week.

dave on compilations

car3@acpub.duke.edu Tue Dec 6 15:15:28 1994

just a little bit of further description describing the moniter this
sampler from the record exchange (the first compilation on which dave
appears), it contains a live version of warehouse. it gives no
specification as to where/when this was recorded and i have no idea
myself. it is a pretty good disc, especially for free. in case dan (or
whoever has my tapes) is reading this, i still have not received my wait
chapel tapes. i would like them.

Re: chords file

NebuIous@aol.com Tue Dec 6 15:20:21 1994

Someone needs to change the transcription of Say Goodbye to include the
inter-slide to C...

  A slide to C, then A to E
e----------------------------------------------------------------
B----------------------------------------------------------------
G---6/x-------------6/13----11-----------------------------------
D---7/10------------7/14----12-----------------------------------
A---4/7-------------4/11-----9-----------------------------------
E---5/8-------------5/12----10-----------------------------------

Er, are you sure that is how you play it? Because I'm inclined to say that
this is wrong. Just for common knowledge, this is how i generally play it

e----------------------------------------------------------------|
B----------------------------------------------------------------|
G-----6--6/7--6----13------13----11--11----------6--4--6--4--6---|
D----------------------------------------------------------------|
A-----4--4/5--4----11------11----9---9-----------4--2--4--2--4---|
E-3/5----5-------5/12--12------5/10--10--9--7--3/5---------------|

The basic chord structure in this, I believe, is correct. The added octaves
(I leave out the octave of the root on the D string, but that's just me) that
I play around with just mimic some of Dave's Guiar Stylings (tm).

p=pull off
e----------------------------------------
B----------------------------------------
G----------------------------------------
D----12----10---9---7---5---3---3p0------
A----------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------

i'm just wondering if i should put this in the file since it will probably
disappear soon...

ps - thanks for correcting the "Typical" file, it was annoying me.

uh thanks.

what is up with 'dave.base'? did i miss something??? what happened to
warehouse? i'm guessing blake dropped out of it with his mysterious
departure (at least for now?) from the net, but why has the name changed if
it's still the same kind of idea? Don't the dead have somethign called
Deadbase or something? I know me & rick don't wanna have dave be compared to
the dead (hee hee). gosh.

and back to clare...

Just to update everyone that the compilation that the person wrote about
being the first one DMB is on is incorrect. I have a HORDE compilation
that was a promotional gig that RECENTLY is on. Jack On'neill gave it to
me in Jones BEach. It has alot of other small bands(at least at the
time) on it. Problem is that there were only a couple thousand(?) made.
