Re: your mail

I just saw the Dave Matthews Band in Knoxville, and i hate to say that they
just were not that good. i have been playing guitar for three years pretty
seriously, and have been in a few pretty good bands, and i just dont think
dave is that good of a player. he plays in chords that i dont recognize,
chords that dont even exist in the books and magazines that i learned from.
He looks like he's gay, and also on drugs, and boyd and steffan just stand
there, this band has no stage presence!!!!!! Whats the big deal with
them!!!! dave is just a bad impression of cat stevens or van morrison.

Well, can I interest you in an Otter Pop? :) hee hee

tunings

sonfije0@sewanee.edu Tue Nov 15 21:18:22 1994

From all of the shows ive seen, there are no alt. tunings. His current set
lists are all in standard tuning. There are songs like OSW, Satellite,
ect, that contain flat chords, but that is just daves skill and
inventiveness. Alternative tunings, with the exception of a drop D that i
think would sound great on Seek Up ( try it, Steffan does ), are not needed
with daves ability of chord formation. However, i noticed most of the
songs in the R.R. sets ive seen have been in a different tuning. I think
it is a D tuning.
By the way, i know Courtland. he didn't write that post so lets drop it.

shows, and ask tapers to dub show if you like it. Tapers- don't whine.
The band is kind enough to allow taping, and it's your responsibility
not to be possessive or exclusive with this "gift". Besides- it's a good
way to meet friends and possible future trade partners.
tape. Sorry.
good way to make friends as well. Let those that have helped you in the
past know when you get a great copy of a great show. They'll most likely
want to trade.
As a general rule, vague pleas for help starting a collection don't work.
Sign up for a tree, get a copy of a recent show, search your school or
group of friends for fellow fans, then set up some trades with what you have.

I don't mean to sound like an "oldbie" or be the least bit deameaning.
There are plenty of fans with more tapes than me, who have been listening
to the band longer than I have. But I've had great success since I became an
avid trader less than a year ago, so I figured I'd share some experiences.

Trinity set list

btanen@netspace.students.brown.edu Tue Nov 15 22:18:53 1994

Minarets History Issue 2:
the posts included below reveal how incredibly exciting
it was for the Dave Matthews Band to come up to the New
England area for the first time about one year ago.
Aquarium Rescue Unit in a half-empty Paradise Rock Club
and 11 months later they had sold out the much-larger
Avalon.

some posts from our first flame-war, but I've decided
to delay that until next week.

(not many in DMB) but not on the part of the board
(except in one case) but on the part of the tapers.
There were about five analog tapers there and two
digital (myself and someone else-was that you Eric?)
Since I was tremendously underprepared I ended up going
last in the line which means that my copy has a cut
everytime an anolog parent had to flip :(, but oh well.
The first minute on DMB got cut and the first minute of
ARU got cut. Also, one the guys taping analog in front
of me wasn't paying any attention to his deck so I
ended up having to adjust his levels and mine.!!!!
Annoying. Anyway, a killer show to say the least. the
only technical problem on the boards fault (and it
wasn't really the boards fault) was we lost ALL power.
Vocals went out, our decks went out, the board went
out. For about five-seven minutes we sat there waiting
(just as we set up some mics it went back on). The
instruments still had power and ARU just went into a
jam (obviously w/out words. :)) until the power got
back on. Still not sure what the problem was.
and I won't for awhile 'cause I'm taking off for Boston

maybe with some fancy fade in/outs I can make them a
little more fluid. I'll do my best.

was staring at one on the posters (sterograms) they had
on display. Jeff (soundman) was incredible nice as was
ARU's soundman and both bands. Good atmosphere.

DMB's van behind the club. And i am *sorry* for them.
They must be stuffed in there pretty tight. ARU's van
is small, too.
Anyway, after that I went back to the stage and planted myself between two
[Ben inserted a nice graphic here... good job, Ben!]
heard two live tapes. They were excellent. I am
psyched that this band is obviously on the upswing.
They have much creative universe ahead of them. Is
there any need for me to say that Boyd is a diety? I've
seen a lot of fiddlers (in the hills of Arkansas), and
Boyd is magical in his ability to mesh that sound with
DMB. Leroi is cool, but i think he was a little nervous
when he jammed with ARU. it took him a few hesitant
blows on his horn to get comfortably in the groove.
Stefan was good. Just good. Quite good, but after
seeing Oteil (ARU) it is hard to imagine they are
playing the same instument. But that's typical; Stefan
will continue to develop his own style, i'm sure.
Carter is wonderful, and he worked especially well with
Apt.Q258 of ARU. Their simul-timing on Ants Marching
was a sight! And then there's Dave... i have this
premonition that he grows on ya'. His guitar was not
groove on them (vocals) too much YET, but i think it
just takes getting used to so i'll know when he's
really going off... he has a commanding stage presence
that i like. and, he has written some hot tunes!
of DMB guested on most of the tunes, so i will include
the setlist with all the notes of who-guested-when. ARU
are amazing at adapting to new sounds and new members,
so the infusion of Carter, Boyd, and Leroi was perfect.

was some Alumni Banquet in the room where they werer
playing so they had to wait until that was over before
setting up. A good energetic set followed and a large
crowd was there. Trinity is only about 2000 people (I
think) but there were at least 500 people at the
show-for the beginning at least. I suppose this had
something to do with the fact that you paid $10 and got
all the free beer you wanted! And they must have
rolled in 30 kegs berfore the show. That was gone by
the middle of the second set. Needless to say, there
were alot of drunk people there. There seems to be an
attraction between Dave and drunk college kids. :) Beer
was being thrown everywhere (including my deck) but
even that didn't hinder the spirtualness of the show.
The room was cool in the fact that there was no
security and smoking was very easy. Dave took me on a
couple of nice trips. During 'typical' Dave ended up
controlling the whole crowd with an impressive version.
Overall a very good show and a good turnout for there
first time in New England. Hope they come back SOON.

I, for one, agree with Courtland. Just because someone does not share

point of making personal attacks. If you are secure in your admiration
of the DMB's musical talent, then the opinions of others should not
matter a bit. In other words, delete the offending letter and heal your

Last night I heard a bit of a review that is rather humorous. A college
newspaper writer at Westchester University, reviewing UTTAD, compared

Dave Matthews to "a sober Eddie Vedder".

Hmmmm....Sober? Obviously he is getting at the incredible voice range both

But sober?

What do you think? How funny would a DMB "Alive" be. Or a Pearl Jam

jpederso@d.umn.edu Wed Nov 16 00:11:12 1994

It's a little weird looking back on it now, but my VERY first impression
of Dave Matthews in describing his voice was "Well, somewhere inbetween
Paul Simon and Eddie Vedder, sometimes sounding more like one than the
other, with the ability to change moods at ANY time (Halloween!)"

What do you think? I hate to say "Dave is Paul," or "Dave is Eddie,",
because now Dave is Dave, there is no need for me to match him to anyone
else, but in describing the sound to someone new one must draw comparisons.
It's kinda like describing the music "type" that encompases DMB, Phish,
GSW, Rusted Root, WSP, BT, Jambay, etc. I'm not "grouping" them together
and saying they are all alike, they have very different sounds between
them, but in describing them to new people (I live in Minnesota, it's a
common occurance!) it's almost impossible to give them a label. While
I'm thinking, does anyone have a really good suggestion? One that they use?
I know the possibilities are endless, but I think it would be a fun thread.

Just a note, when I bought my copy of Rusted Root's "When I Woke" there
primal, body-moving music" or someting involving those three words. I
laughed. I then looked for the "Primal" section in between "Pop" and
"Rap". ;)

Peace, love, and unstructured playtime. (I'm done with finals now!!!)

the net, sorry, I just felt the need to say something before everyone
else does. One last thing to Courtland, if you don't like the DMB then,
it's easy, don't listen to them. See ya.

Sorry you all had to scroll down for this but it needs to be said. It is
called freedom of speach, look into it. Where can any of you begin to
smoke someone else for his opinion (and yes, I am smoking those who tried
to smoke him). He has the right to say this regardless of whether or not
any of us agree and also to be on the NET is he so chooses, regardless of
whether or not he is a Dave fan. Everyone is entitled to their own 2
cents, and this is just mine. I think that Dave's being sick must have had
a negative affect, but he can say that if he wants. Boyd is awesome, but
does he ever jump around stage and keep the eyes pleased. He does go sick,
but usually stays in the same spot stage left. You listen for the sound
cause that is what is most important... Stefan is the same way. On
UTTAD's Warehouse, Stefan does some of the coolest bass I have ever heard.
IT just grooves. Once again, however, he does not exactly jump around
stage and keep the audience enthralled. Then again, is that really
necessary??? Isn't a concert a place where you are supposed to listen to
music. One of the best concerts I ever saw was Clapton, and he does not
move more than 5 steps around the stage at any point in the show. After
all, the music of any group is THE MOST IMPORTANT PART of any show, be it
the DMB, The Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam, or ayone else out there...

Thanks.
Paul Chandler

(PS the only comments I didn't agree with of Courtland's were the
sexuality and drugs. as someone else put it, what do they have to do with
the music he plays???)

Sorry for the waste of bandwidth, I tried to send this privately but
it got returned, so if your first name isn't Courtland, You may disregard.

Thank you for setting me straight. I am afraid that I have not been here

Courtland Eyrick

rmg@acpub.duke.edu Wed Nov 16 01:01:18 1994

Before we get a pro-Dave anti-Dave thing going, let me just please ask
you all not to rip Courtland Eyrick for his misunderstanding and untimely
review of the DMB. I actually have no problem reading anti-Dave
sentiment, but by declaring Dave a bad performer because, in part, he "looks
like he's gay," Courtland has shown his own illegitmacy as a reviewer, so
he need not be taken seriously. Please, let's just leave it at
again if you plan to be as closed minded and narrow as your post was.
the same way I do but have less patience. Please heed this advice
because we really don't need this shit. This has happened on the Phish
net with competition between the Dead and Phish with all the name calling,
etc. and we don't need it.

Re: MINARETS digest 352

pfollow@unix.cc.emory.edu Wed Nov 16 02:02:09 1994

To whoever said in digest 352 that Dave is not a good guitar player was
WAY OFF BASE. Dave isn't a bad guitar player, as this person suggested,
just because he uses chords that "aren't in the magazines or books" that
this person has learned from. I'm a music major who's been playing
guitar for over six big years now and who is a music major (classical
guitar), but any type of artist would tell you that just because someone
doesn't do it by the book doesn't mean that they're untalented. In fact,
it suggests to me that they're all the more creative, especially Dave
(who I understand is self-taught). Dave might not ALWAYS play standard
folk chords; he often uses triadic inversions. And even if he was
committing an unspeakable guitar sin by playing these non-standard
chords, I wouldn't complain because I still think the tunes sound pretty
damn good.
All in all, Dave is an excellent self-taught rhythm guitar player and an
incredible song writer to boot. I also have no complaints about his
vocals. His voice is his trademark.

re: the flaming of Courtland

AHENNE@drew.edu Wed Nov 16 02:13:58 1994

i just thought that, although i didn't personally post any comments, that
i'd extend a net-wide apology to courtland--sorry, friend. you didn't
deserve that flaming.

as for the person who actually did write the post...well, i absolutely
agree that they have every right to dislike dave, and to say so. i
respectfully disagree with the statement about dave's guitar playing (so
it's not in a book? that's a _good_ thing...) what really bothered me,
though was the whole, "he looks like he's gay and on drugs" bit. now, we
all know there's no such thing as "looking like you're gay," right? and
even if he was, we all know that's just fine, right?

just checking.

TUNE ME!!!

driver8@phy.duke.edu Wed Nov 16 02:16:21 1994

I may have some answers to the tuning question - Some have me pegged with
perfect pitch (but I'm still a bit wary) - I can't hear any tunning
difference in and of the songs, except Steffan occasionally with a
dropped D on "Seek Up", "Dancing Nancies", and #36. He's also the only
one I've witnessed tune down on stage so...however, I have heard several
recordings of Satellite and (After Her) that are not in the same key as
they appear in the album - this is probably due to being played in a
different position - I won't go back into that whole intro bit - BUT, the
interesting thing is that a few weeks back at the ritz in Raleigh,NC dave
had his second guitar tuned to an eery dropped half-note. Maybe a
quarter-step...Anyway, before they started "minarets" I noticed both Dave
and Steffan change instruments - each with this new tuning I presume -
and Boyd played some crafty stuff that I hadn't heard before. Leroi
played with his sax a bit as well, although I don't know if you can
change the pitch of a sax. The song had a very murky sound that I didn't
much care for and I've never heard it since so...Perhaps dave is taking
the next step and going into the realm of new tunings --- let's hope not
though, then his songs might be REALLY hard to play.

So as for now I'll keep doing my covers in standard tuning.

food for thought---but not too much

Okay I had to get in on it...

dave is that good of a player. he plays in chords that i dont recognize,
chords that dont even exist in the books and magazines that i learned from.

I just thought I might point out that anything with three or more notes can
be considered a chord. Any three notes as long as they are DIFFERENT notes.

But as far as Dave goes, well, you're WRONG. Just because when he plays a D
chord he doesn't play it the standard la-di-da way doesn't make him any worse
(in fact it makes him more knowledgable) a guitarist.

No Alternate Tunings

NebuIous@aol.com Wed Nov 16 04:50:31 1994

Nope.
Dave doesn't use none. At least he doesn't now. He's probably experimented
with them in the past, but for a playing musician they can be a pain,
especially when most Dave songs were written, Dave didn't have someone to
take one guitar and tune it to, lets say, DADGAD (EVERYONE PLAY DADGAD! It's
soooooo fun) while he's playing a tune in standard/another alternate tuning.

But I'd love to hear what Dave could do with it. You can get lots of rich
OSW-intro-like fingerpicking things with neato hypnotic drones going.

The only slight change in tuning I can think of is Steffan tuning the low E
down to D for Seek Up.

Alternate tunings are keen, Dave just doesn't use them (I SWEAR cathy!)

Regarding Courtland

djb@mars.gtcc.cc.nc.us Wed Nov 16 08:14:21 1994

I have a few comments to make regarding Courtland's request for an
apology. The first is as a system administrator, it is my opinion
that it doesn't matter WHO posted a message from your account, you are
responsible for ensuring that you and only you use the account, and
how it gets used. Second, just as whomever it was that posted the
flamebait had every right to post it, everyone who replied had just as
much of a right to do so. I responded with a low temperature answer
to his message, and some chose the high temperature response. Posting
flamebait is asking for that type of response.

Please, in the future, if you decide that someone deserves crispy
underwear, use email. And we (yup, I include myself here) should all
publicly ignore flamebait.

i can play the bass string left-handed and you don't see that in any
handbook, and i think i'm pretty damn good at it.

didn't dmb play true and angel, that's a treat, i don't care if he looks
gay (by the way i saw him with a girl on two separate occasions)
at the knoxville show.

the band isn't lifeless, just your impression is.

cat stevens comparison. Now when I think about it, you're kind of right
on this on. Stevens' violin player and saxophonist were amazing.
i tihnk he's the one who originally did ants marching.

van morrison comparison, if you want easy chords to play to back up
your guitar knowledge, look no further than to van.

that's enough for now. it's always fun to jump on any bandwagon once
in a while.

have and then tree the sucker, and get lots of good stuff to trade
with all the folks who want trades, and not blanks. Soap box over.
Here's the tree and if ANYONE has questions, or I misspelled your

minute tape to get all the cool chatter. There's even an incident

quality from 3/93 Davidson PiKA, some rare stuff! Don't complain,
it'll be great!

Seeing as this is a hot new topic in Dave's guitar playing, maybe we
should give a little lesson on it and toss it in the tab file. I have
played for many years but only took lessons for a short while, so
basically and inverted triad chord don't mean nuthin' to mean. I know a
lot of the funky chords that dave uses, but I call them the "Funky say

"Tripping Billies/Lover" little fingering... anyone wanna post, or send

As far as the infamous scandal concerning the letter

I love DMB as much as the rest of you do. We simply
have to ignore comments like that. Everyone has an opinion.
I just think it was a dumb way to present it. this

(and i suppose DID know) the rage and hostility the

DMB but completely love 'em! I would love to get some tapes from old shows
but am afraid I can't offer much in return. :( Also does anyone have a copy
of the Lupo's show in Providence, RI? What an absolutely amazing and fun
show! If anyone can be of any assistance, i am much obliged. Thanks!

the DMB in RS

pwchan@mail.wm.edu Wed Nov 16 16:27:50 1994

I suscribe to Rolling Stone but have not noticed Dave in the alternative
charts. Maybe I have not gotten the newest issue but the latest one I have
gotten does not even have the charts in it--it is the Generation X issue.
Can anyone tell me who is on the cover of the issue in question??? By the
way, this is not the first time the DMB has made it into Rolling Stone.
Right after Remember Two Things came out, they also made the alternative
charts in Rolling Stone one issue. I don't remember the issue number or
anything but I think they were something like number 5 in this particular
one. Since then, I have not noticed them anywhere else on the charts in
RS. Thanks to anyone who can help.

Questions...

mwebber Wed Nov 16 16:31:50 1994

Hey. Heres a few questions I have.
Any truth to the rumor that Dave does a cover of Zep's Tangerine?
Where will dmb be on new years eve?
I also heard that 'Jane' got engaged...
Any reviews from the acoustic show last week in NYC w/ Shannen Worrall?
What the hell is the thing that hangs from Dave's right side? Its like

"could i have been caught in public in my underpants..."

Replys are welcome... Dave

the song that schwagger likes

TWDUNCAN@ucs.indiana.edu Wed Nov 16 16:38:20 1994

Two nights ago, Dave and rusted root ended their tour at Indiana. Dave played
2 and half hours and played everything off their cd's except typical situation
lover lay down, #34, halloween, and watchtower. The show ended with Root and
Dave playing "minarets". In all there were 11 people on stage, which was
pretty nice. They also played cry freedom and a few other tunes that I can't
remember. Boyd got in on the vocals for a song and dave played an excellent
version of jimi thing. During the show dave said something funny to a girl
who turned 21 that night. He said...
"It's great for 2 or 3 months or a year and then it starts to suck...and then you start to drink alone".

I don't know if you tried to be funny guy or to see how many people would
dislike you? Perhaps you wrote a letter on why you dislike dave on the
Dave Network because you were dropped on your head when you were little, or
maybe you were born retarded, or could you actually be that parking lot
attendant that dave frequently sings about. Anyway you look at it your message
was disliked and you should consider retiring from the network if you decide to post such garbage in the future.

Davison north carolina I would greatly appreciate it. The reason being is that
I could be heading down there Dec.9-11 for final four in soccer. So if anyone
has any info on where to stay, or even where Davison is at I would appreciate
it.

Dave Rules, period

stenhot@alleg.EDU Wed Nov 16 17:05:59 1994

I just joined the Dave Net today. I must say that the mail I've
recieved so far is very interesting. I go to Allegheny college in
Meadville Pennsylvania. My brother goes to Wake Forest and has seen
many shows at Ziggy's. He started giving me tapes about two years
ago, and "The Best Of What's Around and Granny" blew my mind. I
caught the band on October first in Philadelphia with and band called
From good Homes. the show was as amazing a set list as I have ever
heard dave play. On Oct 7, I caught the band with another group that
is huge where I am called Rusted Root. Root headlined and kicked all
kinds of ass. Dave played a shorter set but was still great. If
anyone has any tapes they would like to excchange, I am definitely
interested. I have many I can offer in return.

P.S. Carter Beaufort is a very nice man to talk to.

jcmuniz@binkley.cs.mcgill.ca Wed Nov 16 17:17:24 1994

Hello There,

I have to say Minarets gets an "A" for handling that well placed
piece of flamebait. No one seemed to take it too seriously, and
most everyone who responded did so with intelligently and with
minimal "Dave is God - so you're wrong". We seem to be farther up
on the evolutionary ladder than our counterparts, the DeadWipes
and the Phishwipes 8^) (anyone else follow those ridiculous Phish
vs. Dead epics?).

As far as alternate tunings, I wasn't there in the early early days,
and I've never seen Dave do any extensive tuning between songs, and
the only time I've seen him switch geetars is when he breaks a string.
I doubt his roomate/guitar-tuner guy does the alternate tungings for
him.

see yous later,
Kwon

The poem below was written by Lara Call and she gets a tape for her
efforts
serious and some were goofy, but i liked them all...

Ode to dmb

The band plays some good tunes,
I like to listen to them when my head is in fumes,
(or when my roomate is trying to sleep)
Some tunes are cool, others make me weep.
I like to paint while listening to dave,
His songs give me inspiration that I often crave.
None of the songs are repetitive or alike,
That is one of the many reasons it is dmb that I like.
But, i really don't have time to be Dickinson or Poe,
I just want to say dmb can put on a great show!

Gees peats folks! Courland said he didn't do it and he apologized for what
happened! I've always thought of the folks on this net as being laid back
and cool about stuff but
I'm starting to wonder! I'd also appreciate it if some of y'all you stop
bashing Sewanee. Dave's got a lot of fans up here on the mountain and
every time I see him he talks about comin back up here. We're out in the
middle of nowhere so people don't tend to lock their doors or worry about
their stuff being tampered with. For people like me who leave their
computer on 24/7 that means any one could walk in and use my comp. But I
don't worry about it cause we have an honor code. Obviously it has its
weaknesses but you can't blame Courtland for that. So lets just drop the
subject and forget this little incident ever happened. We're here
(Courtland included) because we love Dave, not because we hate people who
don't.

Just my $.02 worth

Hello to all. This message is about our old buddy Tim Reynolds. I saw a
flyer saying that TR3, Tims band, I think, is playing her in old
Blacksburg. I have seen Tim play with Dave 4 times now, but never in his
own band. The flyer showed pictures of the band, but I didn't see Tim in
it. Is he still playing with TR3? If anyone knows much about TR3, if you
could tell me whats up I would appreciate it. If it's Tim I'll stay and go
see them play. Thanks!

Get In Line

Barrett.S.Shaver@dartvax.dartmouth.edu Wed Nov 16 19:23:25 1994

I haven't seen the lyrics to Get In Line posted yet so i figured i'd try it
out. The following was transcribed from 10/9/94.
There are a couple indistinguishable parts which i have marked with (?).I'm
sure there are tapes out there where the lyrics are clearer, and probably
people with better transcriptions and interpretations. anyway...
GET IN LINE

(the first line i'm totally lost on)
don't bump me, don't bump me if you mind
i come run over say hey i'm handl(ing)
and hours and hours stand in line
no faith does grow from this mess here
i work time to spend on my dreams see
going hungry and so them, they're waiting
said oh don't worry here till the battle
said oh yes running faster and faster by
said oh ( ? ) no worry
said oh ( ? )trouble(?) to stand by

said oh don't worry
will be
say please don't worry
in

said oh yeah i wonder i wonder it's amazing
( ? ) if you don't get in line
when they take will they give back again?
when this thing comes, this refusal to ride
came on a boat, came on a plane, to make
all they say is man stand up get in line
and if i don't get to you come back
but i'm tired of this tired of this faded line
so i tell you man sometimes i want to say
oh what can i say to my wife, my children
oh dreams ( ? ) in this place but oh but oh

said oh man i'm growing cold and
said oh man don't you see what i mean
said oh this crazy mess got me extreme
i say but don't worry
but i say let me do this,

said oh i worry
said oh i see i see

( ? ) inviting me into your doorstep
oh, angry and wanting to rake it all in
i'm taken surprise in this hole, i'm
said god don't take me for granted,
they are faced with disgust,

The Music Monitor Top 10 Reasons to Listen to Dave

sctm@vt.edu Wed Nov 16 19:48:25 1994

The Dave Matthews Band
Under the Table and Dreaming
Top 10 reasons to give this a listen.
by Robert Beverly
10. Fiddler Boyd Tinsley broke up his own succesful group to join the DMB.
9. Songs combine multi-layered arrangements with plenty of open space.
To that extant, they are the musical equivalent of a croissant, or a
perfect souffle, or maybe a . . . well, you get the idea.
8. Steve Lillywhite, who produced early albums by Peter Gabriel and
U2, asked if he could produce Under the Table and Dreaming.
7. The Dave Matthews Band is the only band that is anchored by a jazz
drummer and a classicaly trained bassist, has no electric guitar, and can
somehow get compared to Pearl Jam, Aaron Neville, Blues Traveler, and
Michael Stipe.
6. Dave, who sounds like no one else on Earth, is the only member of
the band with no Native American blood. (Sorry, I realize that this is not
a reason-this is a factoid.)
5. Having made their reputation playing live, the band recorded the
basic tracks for Under the Table and Dreaming the same way.
4. Lyrics contemplate philosophy while taking you around the world in
been a millionare in Bel Air?/Could I have been lost somwhere in
Paris?/Could I have been your little brother?"
3. The DMB is the most talented, eclectic group of musicians to record
a major label debut this year, and that debut, Under the Table and
Dreaming is excellent.
2. You can ignore the opinions like the one above and decide for yourself.
1. Paul Schaffer makes absolutley no guest appearances whatsoever.

Tape Trading Ettiquete SP?

kreytatd@maple.lemoyne.edu Wed Nov 16 21:23:51 1994

OK-
I have been a dave fan for a while, got my first tapes through the usual
channels, my buddy, bob. Anyway, those tapes were good to listen to, but
not the best quality. I have been taping for quite some time. Us up here
in Syracuse don't get much Dave, ever! They played with HORDE this summer,
but a Rochester show never surfaced.

Back to the point of this message, everyone, wants good tapes right?
I think that we all need to keep a few thigngs in mind, while trading
amongst each other.

1. First off clean your decks (most of us take showers every day right?).
this is the same thing, that means demagnization, and head cleaning. Cost
less than 10 bucks to get this stuph, and it lasts a life time.

2. Please record source and generation. Many people want to know this,
I personally don't mind getting a tape or two without knowing the gen.
I have some phish tapes which are 8 or nine years old and I know the gen.
Dave isn't that old, and more than half of my tapes are of unknown
generation. Basically the standard for this is that DAT's dont "age"
generation wise. Analogs do. First copy off DAT, or source is 0 gen
or master, then the first copy of that is 1 gen, 2nd, etc...

3. have some idea, what your tapes sound like in relation to others, ie
dont explain that your so fuckin great awesome tape from the end of 93
is the best and I have to have it, and then I get it and it sounds like
dave and the bunch are playing inside a tin can. They haven't ever played
a show inside a tin can. Have they? ;-)

4. And please take this for what it is worth. I don't want to insult
anyone, I have traded with, or that I might trade with in the future.
Please follow these or some similar guidelines when making tapes for others
and trading in the future. It is good karma(whatever that is) to spread
good dave, or anything else you might be interested in, I am sure that
It will manifest into some sweet sounding tapes falling into your lap
some day.

5. And remember the more you spread the music the more others will
understand what dave is about. And to all of you who have kept with me
through this rambling, I will make a newdie offer, actually just a newbie
offer for all you newbies, I will make you some Dave, just get in touch,
the tapes I will make are my first two good quality tapes. 2-27-93 I,II
90min I dont think it is a full show. and II of 3-4-94 90min. Get in touch
with me, I think I am going to limit this to ten, so write fast. Any how
these tapes are both master analog from a DAT. Yours will be first gen,
keep it going, whoever you make these for, theirs will be 2nd gen.
And you know the rest, the key to reducing hiss is clean and demagnitized
heads. Thanks again for listening and enjoy the break, all you collegians
out there, I know I will.
later

the long dangly thing is dave's earwax...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Wed Nov 16 22:14:30 1994

that thing is dave's guitar strap, and the reason it hangs so well (double
entendre not intended;) is that he plays with his guitar hiked way, way
up. most guitarists play with the guitar way down near their waste (peter
hook of new order plays with his bass literally haning at his knees), but
dave prefers it up on his chest. with the narrow body guitars he uses,
it makes sense, because the constant rhythmic motion of his right hand (oy,
this is starting to sound like the smurf post) can get tiring if his
arm is too low. i've tried it, and though it doesn't make sense here in
print, it does make sense in practice. for those of you who play rhythm
guitar, remember how tricky it got the first few times you played standing
up? well, having the guitar pulled up high mimics the sitting down postion,
and it's easy to pull it up high without the bulk of a full body guitar.

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Wed Nov 16 22:28:13 1994

Top 10 reasons to give this a listen.
by Robert Beverly
10. Fiddler Boyd Tinsley broke up his own succesful group to join the DMB.
is this true?

9. Songs combine multi-layered arrangements with plenty of open space.
To that extant, they are the musical equivalent of a croissant, or a
perfect souffle, or maybe a . . . well, you get the idea.
er....is this true?

8. Steve Lillywhite, who produced early albums by Peter Gabriel and
U2, asked if he could produce Under the Table and Dreaming.
well, if you hate u2 and peter gabriel, you can tell dave to f**k off...

7. The Dave Matthews Band is the only band that is anchored by a jazz
drummer and a classicaly trained bassist, has no electric guitar, and can
somehow get compared to Pearl Jam, Aaron Neville, Blues Traveler, and
Michael Stipe.
well, this is true.
6. Dave, who sounds like no one else on Earth, is the only member of
the band with no Native American blood. (Sorry, I realize that this is not
a reason-this is a factoid.)
again, is this really true? i didn't know that boyd, leroi, carter and
stefan all had indian blood in them. that's what Native American means.
maybe native American...

5. Having made their reputation playing live, the band recorded the
basic tracks for Under the Table and Dreaming the same way.
i'll by that.

4. Lyrics contemplate philosophy while taking you around the world in
been a millionare in Bel Air?/Could I have been lost somwhere in
Paris?/Could I have been your little brother?"
3. The DMB is the most talented, eclectic group of musicians to record
a major label debut this year, and that debut, Under the Table and
Dreaming is excellent.
this is definitely true. :)

2. You can ignore the opinions like the one above and decide for yourself.
no, no, i'm a top 40 FREAK!!!! i LIKE people making decision for me....

1. Paul Schaffer makes absolutley no guest appearances whatsoever.

thank god.

this egg shaped presentation has been brought to you by the letter 0, an
undrilled bowling ball, and a pair of safety siccors.

Davidson the Final Four Vol III

WIFOY@DAVIDSON.EDU Thu Nov 17 00:17:23 1994

do I get there....

it's simple. We're nestled deep in the northern end of Mecklenberg
County, about 20 north of Charlotte, NC. I's-85 and 77 provide
access. Be prepared to walk a lot if you're here for the NCAA finals
in Men's Soccer. If you can orient yourself to Charlotte, then we're
north on 77 at Exit 30, which will read "Davidson-Davidson College"
and you'll figure out the rest, when you get backed up on the
interstate. From 85, we're about 25 miles north of Charlotte, and
take the Concord Exit. You'll take a left if you're coming
northbound, right if southbound and go for about 3-4 miles. You'll
see a sign that says Davidson - and you'll take that right and go
for about a mile at which point, you'll run into a stop/yield sign and
a t-intersection. take a left and be prepared to park somewhere and
it'll likely be expensive, hey it should be if we have to move all of
our cars.... anyway, hope that helps. any minarnetters coming to the
final four, give me a buzz via email or call me when you get here. i'd
love to meet you guys/ya'll ;). Bring your lists...

have indeed evolved over our compatriots even the national midnight
star as recently as last year had lots o flamebait. wish i could'a
been there for the wait show, as I live in winston when I'm not
slaving over my courses here at Davidson.

Peace, Will

courtland,
a thought. there's really no need for the hate mail you sent
me, though i do understand your hostility. so let's
call it even. no hard feelings, o.k.?
school down the road at baylor in chattavegas and i really
do miss the mountains, the colder weather, and the excellent
rock climbing. But i traded all of that for four years in the
sun. don't rag on Rollins, it got rated #3 in the south this year.
besides, i am getting a fine education, plus a tan, plus a
chance to waterski for a national championchip team. but
that doesn't mean i wouldn't like to have a degree from
the University of the South, but i'll cope.
anyway, please don't be angry. c-ya later.

While I am not a member of the Paul Schaffer fan club, this is obviously
a reference to the new BT album, on which Paul makes a guest appearance
and I would have to say that it is a damn fine album. Not that any of
this is a reason to or not to listen to either of these albums, just
thought I would share. bye...

Great and elusive DAT!

sctm@vt.edu Thu Nov 17 02:38:59 1994

interested in DAT machines and now the new mini-disc. Mini-discs are still
really freakin expensive and I think DAT's are cheaper. I read the FAQ,
but it wasn't too explicit as to the cost and benifits etc.. Some of you
out there have DAT machines, are they worth the money? Has anything been
released in DAT format such as new albums? How much are blank tapes, etc...
specific machines and prices I would be greatful. This might cheer up those

to russ

Russ,
at sewanee we have computer in every room, classroom or dorm room. I do
not have to go anywhere to type a message, therefore if my roomate wants to
use my computer to incite a riot he can. He does not have to have any
password or he doesn't have to have any account. I think the net could use
some more anti-dave stuff, but it wasn't me who did it. I know dave
personally and respect his talents as a muscian. Still there is no reason
for all the flaming that occured over one message. Why don't you just
leave it alone.

 NO...no way...not gonna do it...

Find a better song to describe me by...if you must...

i prefer to be called "a fan".

Re: apologies to Courtland

sounds similar to mine. After six yrs. as a day student at McCallie, I
just couldn't resist four years in the sun (it's a different sun out
here, believe it or not). Anyway, you also mentioned climbing, and I
know (or used to know) quite a few climbers in Chatt, several of them Baylor
students. When did you graduate? BTW, in case you get Climbing
magazine, one of my friends recently went to Junior Worlds in Berlin, and
he's often in the mag; anyways, I can't get in touch with him and I'd
like to find out how he did, so if you'd sift through Climbing looking
for the name Sam Adams, It'd be much appreciated.

Apology about Bandwidth

malachi@leland.Stanford.EDU Thu Nov 17 04:40:32 1994

Sorry about all four of these messages, I think I just wasted about a
year's worth of bandwidth. Our system must be entirely &%*^ed up,
because I'm sure I didn't reply to the entire net either time.

BTW, I think we should be called Grannies, because, for many of us, a
dream life would be rocking on a porch knitting and listening to DMB.

Hey now,
version of "Send Me on my Way" last night on Conan. They looked relaxed but
at the same time psyched to be on TV. So which late night show show will
be the first to put the DMB on, and what do you think they'd play?
