Buford gets in line

NebuIous@aol.com Sun Nov 13 17:11:47 1994

Get in Line is defintely growing on me fast, anyone tried to transcribe
it yet?

Take "Help Myself", make it happy, throw in a strange jam that doesn't really
fit but is still fun, and you've got Get In Line...

Boone and Wake

fhouse@vt.edu Sun Nov 13 18:29:53 1994

returned with soundboards of both the Boone and Wake Forest shows... I'd
like a copy of the Lexington show if anyone would like to trade, but I don't
have time to trade with that many people...

played (I am very grateful that they did!) It sounded like he was going
through puberty, his voice cracked every time he had to sing high or low...
The setlist was incredible and they did some sick jams, including Seek Up...
Dancing Nacnies, #36, True Reflections, and One Sweet World were all
GREAT... But as my good friend said "Rusted root outplayed Dave" :) ... and
they certainly did... RR was great and I bought their disc as soon as doors
opened... The soundman told me they just finished recording a video, but
they have no idea when it might be on (I don't even know what song)... Well,
I enjoyed my three consecutives shows and I look forward to Dave coming back
to VA.. Remember, I need a Lexington...

P.S.- Lets all wish Dave a quick recovery from his cold!

hey all. just discovered something.
since DAMABA has a record label backing them, their equipment has
gotten alot phatter..................

therefore making our bagbies sound way,way phat with a capital PH.

with so many decks making their way to soundboard, I commented to the
Bagman why Phish can't allow soundboard patches anymore and how long
till Dave gets this problem....
he looked at me like I had insulted him and said, " don't worry,i'm cool."
if i had had half a Z he would have gotten it free of charge.

suggestedly be called " Violet Ivy " well....
i listened to it without the lights and maybe it should be called
word.)
or maybe " Violent Ivy and the Marsupial "(song sounds like Australia)
or maybe " Aussie Ivy "
or maybe...ouch...someone just hit me on the head with an umbrellla...

a tidbit or too for me and you

REIDENOUE@urvax.urich.edu Sun Nov 13 18:47:16 1994

I don't know exactly who puts all the time and effort into compiling the
FAQ file, but I just wanted to say thank you. I just wanted to make one
little eensy-weensy, itsy-bitsy correction. In the cover section, it
said that DMB does the song Watchtower (as we all know) by Jimi Hendrix.
I wanted to make it known that, while Hendrix made this song popular, it
was written by Bob Dylan. I don't say this to flaunt my superior
knowledge because, god knows, there are MANY poeple out there who know
more about music than I. I just wanted to make sure that the FAQ file
is entirely accurate. Once again, thanks to all those who put the file
together - it's a tremendous contribution.

Oh yeah. Regarding the cover section, I would like to get my hands on
Nature (Samples) and Sympathy for the Devil (Stones). I'm aways looking
for a trade anytime, anywhere, so drop me a line if you're interested. I
have many DMB shows with all the other covers + songs you don't hear anymore.

I would assume that reference is to the fact that Bob Dylan himself
says that Watchtower is Hendrix's song. Dylan may have written it,
but Hendrix made it.

Jambay 6-14-93 Tree Structure

The following is the tree structure for Jambay - Fox Theatre 6-14-93.
I didn't really intend on it being a tree, but the response was large
enough. The only people that have to make tapes are the ones that
offered to make them. The show is approximately 180min long so it should
fit on 2 90s.

Well, thats it. Sorry it took so long, but I don't think I'm happy
unless I have too much to do. If there are any questions, conflicts or
suggestions, feel free to email me at grayp@pinn.net

Questions about MIDI....

jpederso@d.umn.edu Sun Nov 13 22:00:14 1994

I have got a couple of question rearding MIDI that I'm hoping some of you
may be able to help me out with. Now that I have myself a little time
between quarters I have been messing around with my new computer and
found that I have the capability to use MIDI in a multitude of different
ways. I have a 16 bit sound card and a MIDI orchestrator program built
in, allowing me to record up to 16 different tracks and combine them,
like a little recording studio. Ok, about my questions. First of all, I
need an instrument to play into the computer. My brother has a multitude
of guitars that he runs through a nice little processor with a MIDI in
and out jack in the back. Can I then run the guitar through the
processor and then into the computer, similar to running a keyboard into
the computer? The other thing that I need to know is how much a MIDI
connector cable costs. If there is anyone that has worked with this I'd
love to hear from you, stuff like what it's like, any suggestions, etc.
Thanks!

Angel from Montgomery
-John Prine

i'm an old woman named after my mother
old man's another, childless "__?__"
dreams were lightning, thunnder, desire
so house would abandon
long time ago

make me an angel that flies from montgomery
make me a poster of an old rodeo
just give me one thing that I can hold onto
to believe in this living is just a hard way to go

when I was a young girl

i had me a cowboy
he won't much to look at
just a free frambling man
that was a long time no matter how I try

his dreams seem to go by like a broken down "wheel?"

make me an angel that flies from montgomery
make me a poster of an old rodeo
just give me something that I can hold onto
to believe in this living is just a hard way to go

flies in the kitchen
I can hear them a buzzin'
lord i ain't done much since I woke up today
how the hell can a person who works in the morning

come home in the evening have nothin' to say

make me an angel that flies from montgomery
make me a poster of an old rodeo
just giving me something that I can hold onto
to believe in this living is just a hard way to go

to believe in this living is just a hard way to go

to believe in this living is just a hard way to go.

I have a few quick questions,

1) I just talked to a guy at Red Light who told me that the Marriot was
giving special room rates for anyone who had tickets to the NYE show -but
when I called the Marriot they said that they were not. Is there a magic
word I should say when I call the Marriot again?

2) While I'm at my home in Northern VA over the break is there any way I
can logon to one of the area schools' systems, as a guest or something?

3) What harmonica-key does Peter play on So Much To Say?

guitar preamps (NDC)

I just bought a thinline gold martin pickup for my alverez-yeri

when I play out, but I still want a true guitar sound. I know many of
you play, so I was wondering if anyone had any good outboard pre-amp
suggestions in the $300 or so price range. Rack mountable would be a

Knoxville

The Knoxville set was excellent. Not much new, and dave still had vocal
problems, but he diddn't let it bother them at all. Seek Up Nancies Best
of Whats Around, OSW, True Reflections, Lie in our Graves, Satellite, 36,
recently, ants, warehouse, jimi, Angel, christmas, watchtower, ect.(not in
order). Jimi was great as usual. Boyd got to sing twice and thats always
good. The crowd was fourteen and female. Its funny to watch them ie.
after 36, or the intro to tripping billies. They have no idea whats about
to come so you can watch them as they go nuts when the song, as they know
it on cd starts. Although young, they behaved well. no moshing. Dave and
leroi hung out after for a while. Always good chatting with the boys

to clear something up

msweeney@muselab.ac.runet.edu Mon Nov 14 13:13:38 1994

Hello all you lovely people you :)

first DMB show) a message got posted to minarets about exclusivity (damn
that's hard to spell) of the net. Well the night before i had the
ability to meet a couple of the reguliars so I decided to try and help
them and help jerm understand what i think i do. What insued was a small
discussion on the matter. As with most things after a little discussion
what was really meant came out. This is a letter i got from jerm that
explains what he meant. I'm posting this since some people might delete
it with out reading it if he posts it. What you guys had missed before
this letter was basically just me explaining that the reguliars here (or
at least the one's i've met) are cool as shit people who are very
freindly. The reason this net is diffrent then mosts is (or so i think)
that the reguliars are close freinds. More than just see each other at
shows and may be share a beer afterwards but are really freinds this was
the responce i've gotten from jerm and he said it was cool if i posted
this. so read and understand. I hope this clears things up.

However, minarets is a public forum, supposedly open for all dmb fans to
read and contribute what they like. As such, I still think it needs to be
a little more open then it currently is, and THAT is why I posted that
 message.

I want newbies to crawl out of the corner and feel free to say their
share. I want the oldies to offer up wisdom and cool stories about dave
& co., while being a little more specific when lamenting some ass at a show.
 That's all.

(this is what i said i was going to send but to give jerm a human side
i'm going to throw this into hope he doesn't mind)

I would love to meet the old crew, although living in Boston makes that
unlikely. I'm sure they are great people. I guess I'm just hoping they
will become more aware of everybody else. I don't want anyone to stop
posting or talking to each other. I guess I just want everybody to feel
 like they can contribute.

Again, I've received more email from people, both old and new, who at
least partially agree with what I wrote. I know I'm not the only one who
feels this way, and I'm just trying to remedy this rather simple problem.

As usual, it's been a pleasure.

 peace and good listening,
 jerm

Hope this clears things up. It is a bit of a problem but a double sided
problem at that. The old timers can't (and shouldn't) stop being and
acting like freinds. So the new people got to throw some words in now
and then. But it isn't just all newbie stuff problems the old timers got
to remember this isn't the old days when everyone knew eachother and you
knew where all the toes were so you didn't step on any. Umm. ever lose
your train of thought mid sentence. Shit what else was I going to say
shit. Oh well I hope i didn't step on to many toes here and screw things
up any more and if i ever remember what the hell i was going to say i'll
let you know. sorry for the length bye

My posts

KULPK@tiger.hsc.edu Mon Nov 14 13:23:47 1994

To all of those people out there who can't see the forest for the trees, let me
please point out that if you would stop digging through my posts looking for
things to rant about, and read it in it's entirity, you will see that it was
*gasp* and apology!! I'm sorry if I didn't take the time to explain myself
completely, but frankly I didn't want to waste anymore bandwidth than I already
was. I felt the need to apologize and clarify the meaning of
"Dave-come-latelies", and admittedly I didn't do a very good job of it, but
that cannot be done in words, it's something that you must experience for
yourself. If you read the message then you weren't the type of person I was
talking about. Anybody who cares enough or likes Dave's music enough to
subscribe to the net is automatically excluded. To all of those who could care
less about this little exchange, I apologize for making you read this. To
everybody else, I apologize for wasting bandwidth. To those who have a problem
with what I said, spare the netters, write me directly. And for God's ake, stop
being offended by things that don't exist, and read the posts in the context
that they were written.
"On the fence so as not to offend"

no pointless Dave quotes today, I'm quite pissed.

Today only, smoking is not only allowed but ENCOURAGED in my message.

Re: Boone and Wake

jfogelso@emerald.tufts.edu Mon Nov 14 13:29:55 1994

Hey guys, this is to all with a little personal to Fred added.
First off, I met Fred at the show and he's cool, so don't be harsh and
flame him.
Secondly, Fred went on a minor road trip compared to mine (boston to
Delaware and then a 9 hour road trip with my best friend.) Just a
did the management pick a venue in a town where the traffic lights are 15
min apart from each other? I gue this question comes from going to
school up here in Boston, where you can spit from one light to the next(
although I haven't tried.)
Finally, about the Boone show...
Before Dave and co. came out, I thought that the crowd was going to be as
horrible as this summer Paradise crowd. My best friend and I were up at
the front, because we like to talk to the band while they're playing.
While patiently waiting for the boys to take stage, we witnessed a 6 foot
tall girl punch a 5 foot tall girl in the face, simply because she was
trying to get where she could actually see any of the band members.
But anyway, Fred was right about Dave's voice being shot, but he was
totally wrong about RR outplaying daveband. The reason RR could have
been deemed as putting on a better show than the boys is because to my
knowledge, none of them were sick. I know for a fact that most of the
guys were jet lagged from their recent excursion to Europe and they
caught cold. Boyd, Dave and Carter were all sick with colds, Leroi was
admittedly a bit hungover... Stefan was happy and even a bit bouncy and
although I didn't get to talk to him, he seemed the only one in fine
form.
Dave said on stage that they were all jamming pretty hard, which I agree
to considering how shiity they were feeling. Correct me if I'm wrong,
but I think it's been a while since true reflections was heard. The band
playing it on Sat night was not because they missed playing it, but
because Dave was about to lose his voice and Carter said that they did it
to give him a break. If anyone has or gets the tape, they will see that
Dave's voice is almost totally gone for #36, and it was really painful
for me to see the physcial suffering that Dave was going through as he
literally grasped for some notes. Another significant downer was that
they started to play Drive In, Drive Out, which Leroi told me before the
show was a definite possibility, but it switched into SATELLITE. That
stunk. But that's beside the point. It was good to hear Lie In and True
Reflection , no matter what the reason. Because of Dave being under the
weather, there were no funny Dave-isms and the could-I-have-beens for
Dancing Nancies were strictly from the CD.
Considering what they were going through physically at the time of the
show, I think that they did a fabulous job. Anyone who was at the show
and has any complaints about the performance should know that the band
felt like shit themselves about the performance and should take that into
consideration before they wine bitch about being let down.
Congrats to those of you who made this far, you are now an honorary meber
of the patience club.
Thanks for dealing with my little mini-paper on the Boone show. Listen
to live Dave, do your best to be happy, and please let the 5-5 and under
people in front of you if they politely ask you to let them by when you
happen to be a huge 6 ft and above person.
p.s. Desperately seeking to trade for the Oct 1 Phily show. Can anyone
help me out?

LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO WORRY ABOUT INDENTING!!

Tripping billies intro and thoughts...

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Mon Nov 14 13:31:00 1994

Ahh, well I am quite happy to heard the good ole intro back. Yet I am
eagrly awaiting the screams full band version of summer 93. Anyways I
have some brainstorms on this subject...

While we might all know it now, it must be pretty cool for newer fans to
hear an intro you've never hear to a fav song of yours. I remember the
first time I heard the long full band intro, I went orgasmic, well not
really but you know what I mean. Or Wait Chapels little Satellite intro,
that was pretty cool. The PB&Jam/JustAJam/Violent Australain Ivy Plant
Jam into Halloween at Lex/Wait was hot also. Anyone who was at or has
7-14-93 flood zone and has heard the funky warehouse intro will know
exactly what I am talking about. Dave is actually doing a good job to
confuse/suprise both groups of fans. The new ones are exited about
suprises we know about. We're exited about ones we don't.

On humourous DaveSpeak....I think its funyn that Dave plugged his
merchandise in a church and ever condemned himself for it....

Se you in jail....hehehehe

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Mon Nov 14 13:41:48 1994

Rick,

about here it is.

Bama Rags release 0002, as you probably have seen/own, was a radio promo
CD that contained a earlier edit of Recently (even worse), an Ants radio
edit (nixed the 30 sec snare tap) and CD cuts of Jane and Tripping (i
think, mybe OSW) and has almost the same cover, except the two people are
in different positions and one is holding a pumpkin (hint for Halloween
on CD? i don't know.
I just figure some knowledeg guru might be interested in this fact, or
ask why R2T is Bama 0001 and Recently is 0003

Just for the hell of it....

types of fagrant second hand smoke
when i got in the car after wait .. there was no smoke to be smelt
because it was purest ..maybe event innocent show ive ever been to

the crowd at lex. is also much more familar with the band and maybe it is
that the band knows how to play to the crowd. at lex much was expected
and lots was received jammy funky wise as well as dancin smiley wise .. and
and at wait the cd
was expected and that was given with lots of davey showmanship to boot

comparing the set lists youll see a slight difference .. comparing the
lenghts of the 2 ill bet lex is way way longer ..its all in the mood

atleast in my mind

DMB in Knoxville

akinscj0@seraph1.sewanee.edu Mon Nov 14 15:33:01 1994

dave put on another great show last night despite problems with his voice.
not much different from any other set lists i've seen posted lately, but
for me i enjoyed True Reflections and Angel from Montgomery which i haven't
heard in a while. boyd and carter both had awesome shows and i even saw
steffan SMILE and look up at the crowd for once!

the venue was the electric ballroom which is pretty large and i was worried
about the crowd at first. however, it turned out pretty good with no
moshing or extreme crowing. in fact, justin and i even made enough space
to get in some really good dancing right up front (i like being where i can
see carter). we made some great new friends from alabama and we might even
go to nye with them!

overall, the crowd seemed to be mainly new-comers to live dave shows and
we got some really wierd stares during Lie in our Graves and #36 etc. cause
we were singing at the top of our lungs and dancing our asses off. i'm
sure i was being completely annoying, but i just couldn't help myself.
however, i think dave the lady killer really got a kick out of the dozen or
so teenage (interpret very young) girls that stood right in front of him
and drooled and squealed throughout the show. they were absolutely
hilarious (i don't mean this as an insult) and dave just ate up all the
attention!

When the crowd did know a song, they really got into it and had a great
time DANCING, not just swaying or moshing. the best part was watching the
unsuspecting look on crowd's faces during that new intro to tripping
billies suddenly burst into huge smiles and all get-out when the familiar
part came around. that's what makes dave so special... the surprises. i
think the new guys are kinda luck cause they don''t always know what's
coming up. justin always wants to know the set list ahead of time but i
just enjoy finding out as the show goes along. keeps it interesting!!!

however, that's not to say that dave doesn't keep the average bootleg fan
"yeah! yeah!" in tripping that kicks ass!!!

i was really excited to hear christmas song since i've never heard it live.
again, the crowd was great and remained almost perfectly quiet as dave
pulled off a spine-tingling solo despite his strained voice. he said he
had to go ahead and sing it now since he wouldn't be back this way till
later next year. :-(

overall i say it was a great performance and just goes to show that these
bigger crowds CAN be a lot of fun if ya just give them the chance. granted
i will always love and remember the "reach out and touch the band" venues
of the old days, but i can learn to share as long as i can still see
carter's smile and dance like no tomorrow!

Tapes of the Nashville Show

akinscj0@seraph1.sewanee.edu Mon Nov 14 16:40:06 1994

This message is for the following people who have sent me tapes or who have

Charlie (from Lookout Mtn.) *
Bernie Evangelista *=DD
Scott Miller *=FD
Erin Keys *
Anthony Iott *
Ben Tanen ~

* If you have a star by your name that means I have recieved your tapes. I
am sorry it has taken me so long to get these back to you but Justin had to
fix the beginning of Seek Up because Jeff only had it coming out on one
side for the first few minutes of the show. He fixed it now and it sounds
great! I want to make these as good as possible so you can all enjoy this
wonderful show. Thanks for being patient and I promise they will be coming
soon.

=DD Bernie, you only sent one 90 min. tape which presents a problem. The
show is pretty long and I am going to need another 90 min tape to get the
whole show for you. Or, if ya want, I can just record as much as I can and
just send it back that way. Write and tell me what you want me to do.

=FD Scott, I'm sending two 90 min tapes for the trax 11/17/92 show along wit=
h
your copy of the Nashville show. Is that length okay???

~ Ben, I think we're gonna go with the 5 tape trade (superjam and athens
2/4, 2/5/94). We'll send you the Nashville show (2 tapes), the Sewanee
show (1 tape, really good quality), and then either Charleston and
Chattanooga (1 tape each) or last night's Knoxville show (2 tapes). Do you
have a preference?

Boone and Rusted Root

fhouse@vt.edu Mon Nov 14 16:53:49 1994

recording fear not! At the Lex. show the soundman said that Dave would
always allow recording, ask Dan if you don't believe me!

I completely agree with the reasons WHY Dave didn't play as well but the
fact remains that they didn't! It was RR's last show and I think they
definitely outplayed Dave. Dave's show was intense at times, but RR kept it
consistent... Dave's still my #1 man and all but I still say that at Boone
RR took the show.. Oh well, enough about that...

Things of interest in Rolling Stone

jpederso@d.umn.edu Mon Nov 14 17:11:52 1994

I was just flipping through my new issue of Rolling Stone and found a
couple of interesting things. First of all, there is an article about
free speech and the internet. I have been around the internet now for a
while and have seen a couple of posts about how "big brother" etc. look
at what gets posted and has used this information against people. This
particular article is about a person who posted a suicide note to a
newgroup, not taking it too seriously himself. He was later taken to a
mental institution, evaluated, and let go. I'm not making any judgements
on this particular case, I just thought this article would be of interest
to the users of the internet.

The other thing that I found (Dave Matthew related) was that UTTAD is
rated #1 by Rolling Stone under the "Altenative Music" catagory, with a
nice little picture of the cover in the corner. I sure hope that the
little *%^# that broke into my car and took my DMB CD's and my CD player
last week realizes how cool his music is!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I encourage everyone to pick up a Rolling Stone and check this article out!

Have fun everyone!!!!!

Daves illness

peterke3@wfu.edu Mon Nov 14 17:32:15 1994

I can feel for him- I had a cold singing in a musical at UVA- it sucked.
If anyone talks to him on a regular basis, let him know to be careful.
Singing on the cold i had shot my voice for about 6 mos- i couldnt get
the high notes i was used to hitting with ease. He should NOT TALK at ALL
all day until singing at night, and he should gargle with a mixture of
Benadryl Cough Syrup (its a kiddie medicine- pink in a plastic bottle)
and luke warm water. My voice coach tells me its what all the opera
singers use before shows, and it worked well for me. Also, i hope he has
been taught about how to sing from the diaphragm (sp?) and not from
purely his throat-- or we wont be able to enjoy his voice for years to
come...!!!! He worries me, esp on songs like Halloween and the screaming
part of Say Goodbye...
So, if anyone has his ear, you may want to pass on that benadryl thing...
Kristin

been conceived on this net. if anyone caught a glimple of maybe 14 or so
people dancing around the soundboard at lexington, hugging eachother,
punching eachother on the arms, dancing, spinning, laughing, smiling. you
saw the people you converse with on this net. in the group of friends i
know, not a one of us would ever exclude anyone..... like i said. its was
about 14 of us, and i didnt' just immaculately start at that number. we all
brougt new people into the group. it started with one or two. and we have
woven our blanket to encase us all.. and our blanket is continually being
woven to include this whole net's expanse. my personal philosophy is that
the more you learn about other people, the more you learn about yourself..
and you can never learn enough about yoruself.

lessee.. what else was i going to say. well.. my point of that all was
for no one to feel like any exclusivity is going on. there is none of
that. please be happy for us who have happened upon friendships
indirectly through this small c-ville band we call the dave matthews
band. we owe so much more to them than they realize. so come up to me at
a show... i'll be ever so excited to meet you. or if you're lonely.. just

DMB in ATLANTA (Dec 27) ????!!!!????

AMZENDEL@unca.edu Mon Nov 14 22:23:32 1994

I just got the postal newsletter and it said they're going to be in Atlanta on
Dec 27. Does anyone know which venue they'll be playing at. My guess is the
masquerade music park, since that's where they played last time, but it'll
prob. be to cold to have an outside show. Maybe Centerstage, or the Roxy, or
The Variety Playhouse.
Does anyone know how much tix will be and if you can phone order them (thru
ticket-bastard or 1 800 594 TIXX)??????

If you can answer any of these, please let me know!!!!

Re: MINARETS digest 350

pfollow@unix.cc.emory.edu Mon Nov 14 22:27:45 1994

I saw the Knoxville show last night and loved it. This was my first Dave
show where he headlined (I saw him play at SuperJam IV and HORDE), so
it's not like I had anything to compare it with. Rusted Root was pretty
impressive also. I wasn't in the right state of mind to pay them the
attention they deserved when I caught HORDE in Knoxville. On the drive
up from here (Atlanta), my friend popped in an RR CD, and I immediately
wished I had listened up on them earlier so I could of known their
material.
I thought Dave looked a little on the haggard side; I understand he's
been sick. Still, his vocals sounded good to me (I did notice where he
didn't sing a really high passage on one song). I thought One Sweet
World dragged a little, but my friend who taped it said it was more of a
mellow take on the song that they chose to do instead of a tempo
problem. I was expecting Christmas Song and was excited when Dave took
the stage alone, but the song was quiet enough where I could hear all the
children chattering around me. They were content having heard their two
songs (everyone probably knows which ones I'm talking about) and wouldn't
indulge me by shutting up while Dave sang solo with his acoustic. In
fact, one guy standing behind me tapped me on the shoulder several times
to tell me "nice execution". I knew it was a nice execution, except this
SOB was pissing me off, which made the song less enjoyable. Anyhow, DMB
WAS GREAT OVERALL. I knew I should of written Carter in for Senator
instead of myself (well, if would of if he was from Georgia).

Boyd/Dmb fan name

gap3s@faraday.clas.virginia.edu Mon Nov 14 22:56:11 1994

Hello all,
First of all, Scott Miller awhile back asked about Boyd getting
married. I will share what I know (which, not surprisingly,
is minimal) I think it was a show that I saw the summer of
'92, tuesday at Trax as usual. At that time I was going for
the most part to see Boyd, after enjoying the Boyd Tinsley
Band and Down Boy Down, and had not yet come to worship
Dave as I do now. Anyway, I was very disappointed to learn that
he wasn't going to be there as he was getting married. I
am not altogether certain he was even a regular member of
the band come to think of it (though perhaps he had just
started) Regardless throughout the night Dave made references
to what exactly Boyd was doing at that very moment. I am
not certain what his euphamisms were but you get the point.
Anyway, just thought I would share the memory. Anyone out
there remember the show perchance? (or even better, have
a tape!?)
that we come up with a name for ourselves. I got several
responses and if anyone still has any idea please pass
them along to me (gap3s@faraday.clas.virgina.edu) and maybe
we can come to a consensus. What do you need to ratify something
on the net? 2/3? Anyway, I would love anyone's ideas,
anything but daveheads. If I get a few more, perhaps
I will post all the ideas, if there is interest.
shows? Especially any details about the show in Atlanta that
was just mentioned. It would be greatly appreciated.
for now.

Thanks for your patience,

The band in early forms....

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Tue Nov 15 00:34:26 1994

Reading recent posts about boyd's marriage, I thought of my first dave
experience and thought of a few questions...
I had the pleasure of seeing dave for the first time in October of 91
when I went to visit UVa as a perspective. They played at the same
ampitheatre and it was a post-grad party, so us under 21 year olds had to
sit on the little wall/railing and watch (for free :-) They played on a
crappy little PA (each speaker, only 2, were about 1.5X2.5 ft). I have no
idea what they played but Watchtower, because I remember my friend
telling me they did a stellar cover of it before the show. When we got
there, he was psyched because the Saxophonist and violinist (ie Leroi and
Boyd) had joined him, which didn't always happed he said. Anyways, to cut
to the chase...

Anyone know more info about when Leroi/Boyd became permanent and anyone
got any pre-leroi boyd tapes or any 91/early 92...

Anyone got any other stories on ancient dave???

Kud I have Ben an e 1 other than me....

Ahh its too late to be procrastinating....

Dave in Santa Cruz and San Fran?

everything tour dates posted on this list included them playing with DMB
on Dec. 1 in Santa Cruz and Dec. 4 in San Francisco, but the DMB tour
have not even mentioned the possibility of these shows (the dates aren't
even set off as tentative). I already have my tickets for their shows
with Phish on the 2nd and 3rd, but I really want to see them headline,
with Dave in concert). Plus, my idea of a dream come true would be a
four-day weekend seeing DMB every night in small venues amongst people
who don't know the band very well... So, if you know absolutely ANYTHING
about these shows, please, PlEaSe, PLEASE let me know!

AFM lyrics

gsp2m@uva.pcmail.virginia.edu Tue Nov 15 10:57:37 1994

Hey. Just thought I'd provide a touch-up of those Angel From Montgomery
lyrics posted here recently...

the verses are more like...

I am an old woman, named after my mother
My old man's another, child that's grown old
If dreams were thunder, lightning desire
This old house would've burned down, a long time ago
chorus
When I was a young girl, I had me a cowboy
He wa'nt much to look at, just a free ramblin' man
But that was a long time, and no matter how I try
These old dreams seem to go by, like a broken-down dam
chorus
Flies in the kitchen, I can hear 'em a-buzzin
Lord I ain't done nothin, since I woke up today
How the hell can a person, go to work in the morning
Come home in the evening and have nothin' to say.
chorus

Hey! Since we've been talking so much about setting up trees for the
past couple of shows, how about setting up a tree for last week's Irving
Plaza show? It seems to be a show that a lot of people would like. If
someone can provide me with a seed, I wouldn't mind setting it up.
Please get back to me if you're interested. Thanks-

Wait Chapel and damage?

alberbc4@wfu.edu Tue Nov 15 12:47:03 1994

This is for all to hear, but in particular goes out to whomever it was
(dan b, I think) who warned us about the no smoking decree for last
friday's show at Wait Chapel. I can understand the worries of the anal
wake forest people about smoking and anarchy, especially in light of the
Widespread Panic scene (which i thought was great). But,,,,,, I can't
fathom that $80,000 in damage was inflicted upon the Chapel after
Widespread. I can see some burn holes in the carpet maybe, or a mess in
the bathrooms, but, EIGHTY THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!??? I'd like to know where
(you) got this figure and specifically what damage was done. From what I
saw there weren't any big prob's w/ the widespread show and the
stringency at dave's show was an overreaction - but maybe I'm wrong.
enlighten me. curious.

There definitely were big problems at widespread, though I slipped a
decimal point in damage estimate ($8,000 instead of $80,000). But the
Widespread show was the reason why the DMB show was the last ever for
wait chapel. The only damage done at the dmb show was a tremendous
amount of vomit under the seats...people over did it before the show
rather than slowly drinking all night long...

I was hoping that you all would react precisely as you did, telling me I

Your positivity is overwhelming, and someday I hope to put some faces to

Indy show

SAKUNZ@MIAVX1.BITNET Tue Nov 15 14:56:48 1994

Hadn't seen any posts as of yet about the Indianapolis show last night at the
Vogue Theater, so I thought I'd add my .02. Maybe there weren't any posts
because there weren't any netters there, but who knows. First of all, Dave is
really sick!!!! I envy the F**k out of the guy for even playing a show in his
condition. It took him until Jimi Thing (about 1.3 hours into the show) to
start moving around like he usually does, and even then, it was pretty
restrained. The others in the band helped pick up the slack, especially
Stephan and Leroi. BOyd played pretty well too. Highlights were Jimi Thing
(about 13 minutes) and the Minarets encore with Rusted Root. There were 11
people on stage for this encore!!! They really jammed this tune hard. The
crowd at the show was extremely better than the last time I saw them in CHicago
on 10/28. Maybe that was becasue this place was over 21 only (not that there
aren't some very cool DMB fans underage, but...). The Vogue Theater where they
played was really cool and intimate, but beers were too pricey at 2.50 for a
can of freaking Miller Lite, but I was driving, so that didn't matter too much.
Really cool area that the theater was in, with lots of cool bars and pool
halls. Rusted Root was really good as always, and Boyd came out to jam with
them for a song (I can't remember which one). Like I said, Dave is really
sick, and this affected the show, which was still awesome. He needs the 3 days
of rest he SHOULD be getting before his next show. Later on,
Steve

Jennie,
so here is my reply to your message via minaret net. Now everyone will
know my shocking personal bio below.

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Jen,
is about two hours south of Atlanta. I have a lot of family up here in
Hotlanta, (my mother grew up for the most part here) so it's like my
second hometown. I don't know anything yet about a Decmber 27th show,
I've only read rumors on the net. If such a show does occur, I'll do
anything to get tickets. I would love to meet you if this show does
happen. The 27th is my parents 25th anniversary, so maybe I'll bring
them to DMB (well, I'm not completely serious, but it would be a unique
anniversary celebration).
high-school there. Do you know Michael Jarrett, Diane O'Brian, Dan
Hunter, Chandler Collins, Matt Koren, Andrew Nix, or Chris Cairnes? Just
curious.....(I don't know Andrew, but I know his mother).
they play Dec. 27, I think this will be the best X-mas break ever!!!
Thanks for getting in touch. Talk to you later.

What we have here kiddies is called flame bait. I'm going to assume
he's being serious, and respond this time...

I just saw the Dave Matthews Band in Knoxville, and i hate to say that they
 just were not that good.

If you're basing your opinion of the dave matthews band solely on a
show where the guys in the band are sick, I suggest you listen to a
tape or two, or to any of their CDs.

i have been playing guitar for three years pretty
seriously, and have been in a few pretty good bands, and i just dont think
dave is that good of a player. he plays in chords that i dont recognize,
chords that dont even exist in the books and magazines that i
 learned from.

And obviously, if YOU'VE never seen anyone play a chord, it must be
the wrong chord. Rather than trying to recognize the chords first
time you listen to a band, why don't you listen to the music? Dave is
one of the best rhythm guitar players currently playing, for this very
reason. He doesn't stick with the power chords or the folky chords.
He's an innovator, playing the music that's in his head. It's not
just simple chords out in front.

He looks like he's gay, and also on drugs, and boyd and steffan just stand
there, this band has no stage presence!!!!!!

Maybe this has something to do with the fact that he's been sick for a
week and been on the road? I know there is no excuse for not giving
it your all, but sometimes you have to sympathize.

  Whats the big deal with
them!!!! dave is just a bad impression of cat stevens or van morrison.

I just suggest that if you are truly interested in finding out what
the deal is with this band, you give them another shot. If not, I'm
sure someone else will appreciate the tickets...

Dan

the reason you haven't seen the chords is becuase they do not appear in

that your knowledge as a guitar player is limited since you have only been
playing three years...... i don't mean to put you on the spot... and i didn't

////////
I just saw the Dave Matthews Band in Knoxville, and i hate to say that they
just were not that good.
////////

i respect the fact that not everyone is going to get Dave's music...not
everyone likes black licorice, either.

/////////
he plays in chords that i dont recognize,
chords that dont even exist in the books and magazines that i learned from.
/////////

i find it funny that you state your point this way. god help us all if the
only musical expression allowed is the kind that is scripted and set out in
"how to play the guitar in ten easy lessons" books. come on, how much guitar
have you learned by now? are you telling us that you never tried anything
different? jimi hendrix broke every rule on the books in the late 60s and
i can assure you that no guitar book told him how to do it.

have you ever heard of a triad in the third inverted position? if not, then i
would guess you missed the first and secon position as well. basically
inverted triads are a way of taking the the three notes that make up a
chord and moving them through a total of four positions (triad, 1st inversion,
2nd inversion, and third inversion); same three notes, four interesting
effects. bob weir of the grateful dead is one of the greatest at this. he
takes a song like "fire on the mountain" with a basic rhythm of two
chords, and through the creative use of inverted triads, makes the music
really come alive. get the 'guitar player's handbook" and look up "triads" in
the index. you'll learn a lot.

the other thing dave does is alternative tuninings, so he may very well be
playing a chord you knopw an love, but has to position his fingers differently
to compensate for the varying notes to which the five strings are tuned.
again, if you are really into learning guitar, this is an excellent technique
to work on. stephen stills is known for this.

/////////
He looks like he's gay,
/////////

you sound awfully closed minded. since when did the race, religion, gender,
sexual oreintation, etc. of any one person reflect on the musical integrity of
the group as a whole? do you really care whether a a songwriter is black or
white, male or female, gay or straight. i noted that you are dismissing him
simply because he "looks" gay. the absurdity and immaturity of this comment
amazes me.

Indianapolis on Monday night, yea it was incredible. Of the 11 people on
stage, if memory serves me right, there were only 4 people that weren't playing
percussion instruments. It was pretty much dizzying, the array of sounds being
produced. I was in shock of how awesome it sounded. Hmm, do you think I liked
it??? Its too bad they didn't join up more often. Did they do it at all
during any of the other shows they did together or was it just done since RR
won't be performing anymore on this leg of touring with DMB??? Quite lucky I
was then to see it, eh??

Sorry to "waste bandwith" if anybody feels it, but what's one more message to
1. Rusted Root will be making their national TV appearance on the Conan O'
Brien show on Wednesday night. Yikes.
2. The Samples and Rusted Root will be playing at my gracious institution,
Miami of Ohio, on Saturday, December 3, 1994. Tix are only $10.00 and went on
sale this morning. It's a big arena, shitty sound, but hey, its close and I
don't have to drive 1.5 hours to get back.. Anybody wanting more info email me

I'm happy, guys

gt0407c@prism.gatech.edu Tue Nov 15 20:02:03 1994

Friends,

For the first time I think we have seen an individual who is actually not
brought into the world of happiness by the music-o-DAMABA. This really is
a shame. I don't want to slam the individual who basically slammed dave, cause
then I'd be portrayed as less of a happy person, and I'll leave it to the
dude at sewanee to remain miserable.
I can honestly say that I've never before heard ANYONE who actually considered
dave to be less than a great musician. Some good buddies of mine from
Nashville (who happen to rely on music as their existence) even say that
Dave is an excellent musician, and they really aren't even into his music.
I dunno, I'm happy with Dave, and I know most of you are, too. So..lets
not give this naysayer such a hard time, as a matter of fact, don't give him
any time at all...we'll all be happier if were spending less time being
negative about him, and more time being positive about Dave...and us.

Much Grass,
Shug

Alternate tunings.....

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Tue Nov 15 20:08:06 1994

the other thing dave does is alternative tuninings, so he may very well be

Now this has been something I have pondered but never come the the
conclusion of. I thougth there might be alternate tunings, but then I
figure it was all those funky, killer chords. I've had to tune to
different pitched for different tapes, but all are standard tuning. I've
never really notice him tune his guitar any differently on stage and I
also assume that both his guitars are in the same tune.
Maybe I've missed something all these years in my attempts to play every
dave tune....
Ben, Rick, any suggestions/comments....
