St. Louis/Columbia/Lawrence shows...
av603@Freenet.HSC.Colorado.EDU Thu Oct 20 01:47:20 1994
Columbia, Mo.; or, Lawrence, Ks. shows? The St. Louis show is only $5,
the Columbia show is FREE.
If so, would you please tape the shows an send me a copy. I tried
desperately to get Dave to go to Columbia when I went to school there, and
now he is playing there for FREE. Life's tough, 'eh?
Thanks,

Minarets Outro???
rmg@acpub.duke.edu Thu Oct 20 09:38:34 1994
I have a tape that is labelled "Zolman's W&L '93" and the full date is
not given. Anyhow in the first set, Dave goes from Minarets into this
really odd song that is just two chords over and over and he sings about
life and death and then Boyd comes in with a killer solo, then then jam
switches into a nice mellow groove and it ends. After that they do
Recently and Ants Marching. The encore is Granny, Song that Jane Likes,
and Pay for What you Get.
I've got two questions. What is the name of this song he goes into? And
what is the date of this tape I have?
Thanks a ton,
Russ.

Sounds like 1-30-93, assuming that the set opens with some solo Dave.
Also, somewhere in that first set, someone yells out "Fuck You" to
which Dave responds, "fuck me? later on, my boy, later on." One of my
favorite Daveisms. If that's what your tape has , then it is indeed
1-30-93. The song is called Bluewater, or Bluewater Baboon Farm in full
and in the days of yore.
Also- I've got my info on the post Halloween DMB shows. Still nothing on
that Dave show in NYC. I've got room for three more on the newbie offer
for the 12-31-93 Marriott show. And, if you could, please start getting
those Warehouse tape surveys back to me, I want to have them all by a
week from tomorrow. Thanks

Phish-Net Gathering for 10/27/94
Preceding show at University Hall, Charlottesville, VA
cyberspace but never in person. To attach faces to names and
email ids. To trade tapes and tapelists. To pontificate about the
net and Phish. To predict the show, or discuss the Boone show
that took place the night before. To fill yourself with ground
cow and beer so you're full and ready to boggie at this, the
Elusive Seventh Charlottesville Show, the dream, the reality, the
magic! Also, to find pholks that have your tickets and/or crash
space; it'll be a *heck* of a lot easier than doing it in the
lot, esp. since there are four or more lots.
homebrews on tap, like some gatherings I've seen. But, they've
got decent food, some decent beers on tap, those under 18 can get
in, and it's basically walking distance (5 min) from the venue.
it *starts* approx 7:25); doors open at 6 pm (which means you
want to get there by 6:15 to get up front; its general admission
with no chairs on the floor.)
travel plans for the weekend, good cheer, empty stomachs, wide
smiles, happy thoughts. No illegal substances please. (You'd be
surprised *how* necessary it is to say that; this is a public
eatery, pholks.)
you missed it.)
Directions from the south (on 29):
take 29 Business. Watch for the Barrack's Road exit. At the
bottom of the ramp is a stop sign; turn right into the right lane
of two lanes. You *could* go to the second light, turn right onto
29 Business (called Emmet Street here), and take the second right
directly into the Ruby Tuesday's parking lot, but this will take
you directly into show traffic if it's mid- to late-afternoon.
Instead, after turning onto Barrack's Road, turn right at the
*first* light (onto a road marked as "SHORTCUT" on my ascii map),
then take the first left down into Barrack's Road shopping
center. Get to the other side of the lot, where you will see
Ruby Tuesday's facing Emmet Street; Something Vision eyewear is
the other side of the building that Ruby's is in, and there is a
Baskin Robbins on the north end of the building, which you will
pass on the way to the Ruby's lot.
Directions from the north (on 29):
Kroger on the left and a few hotels on the right, there will be
an option to exit (first right, ramp before bridge, continues 29
South; second right, ramp after bridge, continues to 250 West);
*do not* exit. As you continue, the road that was 29 South
becomes 29 Business. After going under the bridge, you will pass
Bodo's Bagels (highly recommended, but no beer, often busy, and
far from the venue), Arby's, and Exxon on the left. The Exxon is
at the corner of 29 Business (here called Emmet Street) and
Barrack's Road, where there is a light. *After* this light, take
the second right, into the Shopping Center, then an immediate
left past Ruby Tuesday's and into the Ruby's parking lot.
Directions from elsewhere (250, 64, 22, etc):
directions, and get to where 29 and Barrack's meet, the continue
as appropriate.
And, of course, forward this message to anyone that might be
coming to the show, so we can be sure to have a good showing, and
prepare for a great show!
class until the gathering. However, I'll check my email accounts
a few times on the way.
Enjoy,

Personally I think that the best solution is to start newsgroup and keep
Minarets, but keep them different. In other words DON't make like r.m.phish
and Phish-Digest where if post to one you post to the other. Make it like
a.m.pink-floyd and the mailing list Echoes, which are totally separate.

SPLITTING Minarets?
NebuIous@aol.com Thu Oct 20 16:29:09 1994
I'm sorry but this idea is absolutely ridiculous. Minarets is fairly small,
and 40 messages a day is nothing to split up. If you can't keep up with a
moderately paced net, then unsubscribe, but splitting into 2 or 3 (??) groups
is just insane.
Minarets is FUN to read. I ENJOY it. phish.net is something that I
sometimes dread reading. There are so many idiots, and a newsgroup would add
many of these idiots. Call me whatever you want, I want Minarets to stay as
it is. What's the use of changing something that's working better than ever?

Foreign tour?

unidentified bootleg and Dave says " We're back from a foreign tour."
This is the first set and is said just before starting into Angel From
Montgomery. The show is from when Peter was still in the band but that
is all I know about the date. What is the deal with this? Have they been
on a foreign tour before? I thought the Montreal 10/5/94 show was the first
international appearance for the band. Does anyone know what the deal
with this is?
this show. The setlist is Two Step/Lover Lay Down/ The Maker/ Recently/
Blue Water/ The Song That Jane Likes/ Jimi Thing/ Dancing Nancies/
Minarets/ Angel From Montgomery/ Warehouse. In the beginning of Two Step
Dave Says, "Beach song, we just went to the beach, this is a
beach song. It's beach love. Hello." After Warehouse Dave says "Thank you.
We're gonna take a short break and then we'll be back on. Please don't go
home. If you want to dance, it's comming up, it's comming up." During the
show sometime he says something about starting out mellow and the they'll
do whatever happens. Anyways, if anyone recognizes any of this I would
really appreciate any info. Thanks.

...in this corner...Typical Situation.
JPETERS@CENTER.COLGATE.EDU Thu Oct 20 18:04:34 1994
one of my favorite songs in existence, I'm gonna put out a little defense of
Typical Situation (as recorded on UTTAD). I whole heartedly agree that the
extended jam which the band usually hammers out on stage during this tune blows
me away, but I think there's a reason for its absence on the disc. Let us keep
in mind that this is a studio album and what works on stage doesn't
necessarily work on tape. The recorded version of Typical is an extremely
sublime song that showcases Dave's voice above all. The first aspect of DMB
that caught my interest was Dave's voice and it seems that this doesn't receive
as much attention as I would expect. This is a great song to hear him at his
best. When the first verse comes to an end and Dave slides into the chorus
(everybody's happy..) the transition is absolutely perfect. The bass slide and
chimes create such an intense mood. As the rest of the band comes in later the
subtle energy built into the song threatens to explode, but its kept in check by
the transition between fast and slow, loud and soft that Dave has written. To
finish this off I'll go on record as saying my mouth dropped open when I first
heard that flute solo and I
wouldn't change that for the world. Leroi is amazing with his horns and
apparently just as deadly with the flute and the choice of instruments on this
tune was excellent.

Dave review you might enjoy reading
jfogelso@emerald.tufts.edu Thu Oct 20 20:15:46 1994
Hey all-I'm up in Boston and I thought you'd be interested in reading
this article, which I'm typing up for you from The Globe...
"Grass roots takes on new light with the Dave Matthews Band, a Virginia
quintet that has just debuted at #34 on the Billboard chart with this
album. It's a fulfilling bow, produced with punch by Steve
Lillywhite(early U2), on the heels of large club sellouts and two
homemade CDs. Led by a South African expatriate whose tight voice
sometimes recalls Robert Plant, the band spins dreamy, shifting melodies
like a folkier Samples. Acoustic guitar, fiddle, sax, bass and drums lend
an airy, flexible tension. Positivity pervades "Warehouse" (about leaving
mental confinement) and "The Best of What's Around." Matthews explores
the darker side in the gruff Rhyme and Reason," detailing confusion that
leads to an addiction, and "Dancing Nancies," where a suicidal
23-year-old asks, "Could I have been anyone other than me?" But the
latter subject adopts an "I'll work it out" attitude while fiddle and sax
swirl with uplift. Those instruments also surface to spice the crisp
"Ants Marching" with a country tinge, while Blues Travelers harp ace John
Popper fuels he funk But the music mainly
supports Matthews' wise, introspective writing.
Sorry about the shitty typing, but you get the idea, just thought you'd
find it amusing.

Once again I will do anything, I have some bootlegs etc.

Trax show without Carter?
tnb2d@server.cs.virginia.edu Fri Oct 21 01:24:45 1994
Tuesday nights at Trax, a time when Carter had hurt his hand or
something and did not play with the band? I'm *not* confusing Carter
with Stefan, GOD FORBID, I remember in early summer '93 when Stefan
"put his hand through a window" (in Dave's own words) and this is
definitely a very different time. I'm not even really sure what year
it was. I could swear it was a whole month that Carter was gone, but
I only saw one show. They played mostly your standard fare (Ants,
Warehouse, Billies, etc), but none of the songs sounded a thing like
they usually did. They had somebody (guy that played bongos with them
from time to time, don't remember his name) on percussion, maybe even
two guys, but without Carter's drums all my friends were way pissed
because "you can't dance to it!" but I was FLOORED. Mesmerized.
Without the drums to structure the tunes the guys just went walking
all over the place, simply JAMMING like nobody's business. It was
fucking amazing. Does anyone besides me remember a show like this,
and might anyone perchance have a tape of one? I've got some decent
ones myself (including the full 110 minutes of the amphitheatre UTTAD
premiere show, or how about the WTJU Prism show that saw the first
live performance of "the Christmas Song"- which Dave called "Blod of
Our Children" at the time) and can trade. Many thanks,

I was recently reading "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintinance"
by Robert Pirzig and I came across a few excerpts from the beginning
of the book that bring to mind the lyrics to a tune that should seem familiar
to everybody. I'll try to keep the quotes brief.
"It was all those people in the cars coming the other way.The first
one looked so sad.And then the next one looked exactly the same way,and
then the next one and the next one, they were all the same."(p.17)
"What you see is the NO TRESPASSING,KEEP OUT signs and not anything
serving people but little people like ants, serving these strange
incomprehensible shapes.And you think,even if I were part of this,even if I
were not a stranger,Iwould be just another ant serving the shapes."

Carter Rocks the House in Nashville!!!!
akinscj0@seraph1.sewanee.edu Fri Oct 21 04:06:39 1994
THAT WAS ABSOLUTLY INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!! The show at the 328 Club in
Nashville I mean. Carter rocked the house!!!! The walls were shaking,
the floor was shaking.... I'm still shaking!!!!
Here's a rough idea of the set list, not in any order and certainly no
guarantees if this is really correct (we're all still in a delerium).
Seek Up to start off
Dancing Nancies.... My personal favorite
Warehouse.... I wanted to marry Carter!!!!!!
Get in Line
Best of What's Around
What would You Say
Song that Jane Likes
Cry Feedom..... heard someone say, "What album is this on?"
Jimi Thing.... Incredible jam on this one
Rhyme and Reason
Granny
Ant's Marching.... The old way with the dueling banjos solos (Haven't
enjoyed it this much in a while!!!)
Recently..... Everyone threw down and let loose, with "on broadway" intro
Tripping Billies
All Along the Watchtower.... Left me COMPLETELY numb!!!!
We think we've got a pretty good DAT so send some tapes if ya want a copy
and a list of shows you would like to trade. We'll post a correct list
tomorrow before we leave for break.
I absolutely worship Carter!!! I got to know him when he played at the
Sandbar in Chattanooga last year. Tonight during a break inbetween songs I
yelled at him and he waved, handed Dave one of his drum sticks and told him
to give it to me. Pointed at me and everything! I wish I had a video!!!

1) saw everything twice in the last 10 days! Got one hq tape from Ziggy's.
Jack Straw is a really neat club/restaurant and all the folks from here came
down!!!! I got a tape but for some reason the levels were off so it sounds
really pissy. They won't play Lorie until after midnight on Jan 1 1995.
They usually split it and play something in between. Now they have a year.
Last note on everything, Nate, the percussionist/lyricist told me after JS's,
that Capricorn Records folks will be/now were at the show the next night in
TN. That rocks!! Maybe, just maybe, we'll see em on HORDE this summer!!!!
Anyway, there was an excellent Sax Jam-Be Gone, and several , and I mean
several great jams on bass, guitar, drums, keyboards, sax, etc. Soulfish was
a little weaker than I'm used to, but they spoil Davidson in general. Craig
said we're their "ace in the hole here in NC." If anyone gets a shot to see
em, they're doing great. Craig and Co. have even written some new stuff,
there's an acoustic song called "All is Quiet" and one they haven't even
titled yet, but they opened the show with it!!!! NEW MUSIC! [ hmm not
something we've seen of our fav Dave...]
2)really looking forward to Dave in NC! As I've said before, Winston, the
armpit of NC, with great violent crime stats, and no really good local
musicians of our genre, will crave Dave and it'll be my first RR show too!
Maybe just maybe, I get on board..... Talked to a friend from Carnegie Mellon
and he said that he's seen em a couple of times and they rocked.... we'll
see, but I generally trust his taste. ...liked the dancing grannies post...i
ramble and waste time... oh well, eat drink and be merry, cause soon monday
will be here....
BTW, someone email me and tell me what spooning is...

Re:Trax show without Carter?
jgs5y@darwin.clas.virginia.edu Fri Oct 21 15:45:42 1994
have any tapes of it, but I do have the "Welcome Back Carter
II" tape. (the 2nd show at the Flood Zone after he came back.)
there were any other fans here from the good 'ol days. But
since there are, does anyone have any tapes from Trax or the
Flood Zone with the "Sweet Home Alabama" intro to Ants
Marching, or the "Dancing in the Streets" intro to Recently(I
think)?
"Mama's Little Baby Loves Shortnin' Bread", and an old radio
show with a lot of rare solo stuff. I also have the original
version of Granny (completely different, only the music's the
same).
Thanks.

Question about 10/9/94
ajs13@cornell.edu Fri Oct 21 16:05:30 1994
I just got a crispy SBD (analog master) of the 10/9/94 show from the
Avalon, and I have one question for anyone who was there. What was LeRoi
playing during Say Goodbye. It was definitely not the Saxophone, or
whatever he regularly plays. If anyone could help me, it would be
appreciated. Also, if anyone has some other hot shows from this tour
(PHISH too) or earlier, I would be interested in trading. I have many hot
shows. Please e-mail me directly, because I don't always read the net.
Thanks. Later.

I NEED SOMEBODY...ANYBODY...HELP
jogriffith@vaxsar.vassar.edu Fri Oct 21 21:56:25 1994
I have been subscribed to minarets for what I think is a decently long time
(obviously not as long as most though) but I have never posted.
This is because I, and I am honestly admitting this to all of you (and some
might hate me for it), do not know DMB at all. In fact, I subscribed
however long ago because I heard about them from a friend and have been
busting my balls to try to find their album(s) (granted the EP stuff, etc)
in local stores without any luck. #34 on Billboard??? Really? Shit,
cause the top 40 places around me don't have anything....I guess DMB isnt
selling out completely then! :-)
Anyway, my real consternation is that I have tried my best to sign up for
these generous newbie offers but each time it seems like i get there after
they have closed. Maybe its cause I don't always get to read Minarets
within the first 10 minutes of getting it (though I do know how nice that
is).
Obviously I have no DMB but I do have some BT, U2 (any other fans there?),
some released and promo Toad the Wet Sprocket live cuts (ditto), Led
Zepplin, Guns and Roses...
Can anyone help?
p.s. this message was written about 2.5 hours ago...it was interrupted to
go and see Pulp Fiction.....very very very interesting. I loved it.

summer ('93) before R2T, I went to see Dave at the Floodzone. Instead of
Dave however, it was the Charlottseville All-Stars. Boyd, Leroi, and
Carter were part f the group. They played True Reflections, then just
kind of muddled around for an hour and a half. I was pretty disappointed.
is their relation to Dave.
the end of True Reflecetions a group joins the band on stage and starts
rapping. Its a pretty cool, five or six minute rap/jam. Does anybody
know who this was with Dave?
greatly appreiciate it.

Just saw the show last night in St. Louis (10/21/94). It was my first
DMB show, and it was amazing! I thought it started out kind of slowly
until they played Dancing Nancies when the band really started to get
into it. My friend has a copy of the setlist, so I'll try to get it and
post it to the net. Highlights for me were an amazing Recently to close
out the set and Cry Freedom Cry during the encore. I hate to shamelessly
grovel, but does anyone have tapes of this show? I would really love to
get a copy of it, have plenty of assorted stuff (DMB, Phish, GSW, BT,
others) to trade. Couldn't tell if there were any tapers out there.
SOmeone, please let me know!
Also, I know this is really short notice, but a friend and I are now
considering driving out to Columbia to catch tonights show. Is there
anyone out there who could help me out with info on where and exactly
when the show is quickly? Thanks very much in advance!

the next individual who decides to publicly enlighten me with his or
her entire tape list will recieve 1 complimentary copy of the faq every
hour for 24 hours until your mailbox is so bloated that you can't even
log on to your account. hell, i'll even throw in 5 or 6 copies of the
lyrics file. that should make your mailbox useless.
we all know how great tape trading is and such, but don't send your
tapelist out unless a person asks for it. this is the dave matthews
net, not the "here's my personal tape collection; would you like part
of it?" net.
sorry to be so harsh, but as crowded as the net is these days, we don't
need to read who has what and where and when.
as a matter of fact, i can't send this message right now, because i'm
overblown with those two tapelists that floated threw here this week.
hold on a sec...
there, that's better...

1. I'd appreciate it greatly if you all could start getting those
warehouse tape selections to me pretty soon. I'd like to have them all be
next weekend. Remember- subject line is WAREHOUSE TAPES. I'll reprint the
original message if anyone needs it.
2. Our school paper had a review of UTTAD yesterday. Not worth
reprinting- suffice it to say that they claimed that R2t was mostly about
a former girlfriend of Dave's, especially apparent in Song That Jane
Likes. I'd flame them if they had an e-mail address, but they don't.
3. I will GIVE 4 hi- q DMB tapes to anyone willing to sport my friend and
I a ride from New Haven to New York City for the Nov. 7 Irving Plaza
show. Catch- we can't leave till 6pm, but there should still be plenty of
time, it's only 1 1/2 hours from here.
Sorry if this is non-sensical. I've taken a taste of what's below and
come away to something better.

Cry Freedom (Cry?) / Out of Rhyme / The New Song
NebuIous@aol.com Sat Oct 22 16:36:05 1994
This is a nice quick post...
1.) why is everyone suddenly calling it Cry Freedom CRY? Before Dave broke
it back out this tour, it was pretty much accepted as Cry Freedom, correct?
2.) Thinking about that old Rhyme&Reason thread concerning how out of tune
boyd & leroi were, I'd have to say it seems like that is actually
INTENTIONAL. On a tape I just got, Tripping Billies comes right before
Rhyme, and in billies I don't notice anything out of tune, and I'd like to
think I have a pretty well developed ear.
3.) The new one - "Get In Line" - definately sounds like a happy version of
"Help Myself"... basically the same type of riff, but without dark sounding
chords like A+ (A augmented) in it.
But I like it. New Dave is good Dave.
'what's so amazing about really deep thoughts?'

Go and drink outside in a public place, you don't get to do that very often.

anne was dave's older sister. she was murdered by her husband who then

happened in jan '94.
this is in the FAQ.

I am surprised that someone actually asked who Anne was. For those of you
who don't know, Anne was his other sister. She was killed by her husband
in February of last year. Dave had to cancel a show here in Ann Arbor
because of "family matters." Which translated to her death and her
subsequent funeral in S.Africa. Rumor has it that she was killed by her
husband, but that isn't something you probably want to pry into. So take
my word for it.

tribe poetics is a coupla guys from richmond who have jumped up on stage
a coupla times with dmb. on 7-7-93 they rapped with the band, and then
the week later on the 14th they rapped with the band on true reflections
and then entertained a very drunk audience during the setbreak, with a
guy on a turntable doing some elaborate mixing. the turntable guy also did
some pretty wacked out shit during carter's drum solo for halloween.
these were also clare's first two shows.
i didn't like it very much, but i tend to avoid most rap to begin with.
the crowd loved it, though. tribe poetics always comes on for true
reflections and they seem to be really tight with carter, because they
always at least shake hands, but usually hug.

Zone, but they played for four or five weeks at the Flood Zone
two summers ago. The band would always end the first set with
True Reflections, and the rappers would come on with their
"Inspiration Rap" (or something like that). Between sets they
would continue to rap. One of the guys looked like he was
related to Leroi. I think they might have been from William
and Mary because one guy always wore a sweatshirt from there.
One of their songs that sticks out in my mind is "Going to
Jersey"- not very good, just annoying.
exactly as described. The rest of the band, but no Dave, True
Reflections, and then mainly crappy stuff. I think they might
have been around before DMB.

1)If anyone really cares enough, I have the bootleg of Tribe poetics from

run through the board, ie I just got vocals, which also means the really
cool shit during halloween is not there. Anyways it makes a perfect
filler on the secong side of a 90 for the first set of that show.
2)Tickets to Lex went on sale here in Lex on Friday at 12.50 plus 50 cent

but the first side is with the band(the side with a definite audience) and the
other side is only dave and no audience. If someone has any idea what's going
