raleigh w/ blues traveler

RPPRISIN@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Wed Apr 20 10:28:42 1994

hey everybody!
a few notes on the show last night.

dave only got to play for about an hour but it was a worth while set.
i don't remember the exact order but the set included

two step
ants
warehouse
tripping billies
satellite
all along the watchtower (w/ chin kinchla)
best of what's around

I think there was another but i can't remmeber right now......
oh wait
rhyme and reason ok..

The Ritz was pretty big a security guard said about 1900 was capacity..
it was an ok crowd they seemed to be familiar with R2T....
most of the crowd sang along with ants and satellite
the set up for the band was weird...
the stage was crowded 'cause of all BT stuff so carter was placed in the middle
of BOyd and Stefan and Leroi and Dave....
the sound was weird too cause where i was the speakers sort of "missed" me if
you know what i mean..... I got use to it....
Dave seemed really excited when Chin Kinchla played on watchtower...
Boyd got invited to play on Manhatten Bridge and 100 years by BT...
Leroi played on some new song by BT...
overall good show

sorry about the mistakes in typing but no sleep is tough to work with

see ya

just awoke after last night's show. god, what a drive.
but worth it. . .i think.

dave's set was fairly awesome. it seemed like the set that never was at
w&m. he opened up with the same two step - ants marching.
and he played BEST!! wow. it seemed like the crowd was trying to call for an
encore, but they turned on the regular lights and the in-between-music right
after the band walked off stage. bummer.
the crowd seemed pretty much a r2t group (although thankfully dave gave us
more than that :)

blues traveler gave a fairly good show. the sound guys totally fooked up
through the first 4 or so songs, but it gradually gathered auditorily
permissible momentum. they played a really cool easy rider and some songs i
hadn't heard. but the highlight was boyd on manhattan - 100 years
and leroi on some cooljazzytypething.

but gee, i wish i could hear. *ringringringringring*
were there any tapers there? the security guard we were chatting with
(who really dug dave by the way :) said that they were allowing tapers...
i've got a few trades. . .

Setlist from Kansas 3/7/94????

C526208@MIZZOU1.missouri.edu Wed Apr 20 17:35:36 1994

I just got my tape today from that show at Benchwarmer's in Kansas on
3/7/94. I was wondering if anyone has a copy of the setlist from it.
I misplaced the copy that I have.

Also, I am willing to trade a copy of this tape for other shows from other
places. This is my first tape. Since I'm from Missouri I don't get to see
Dave too often (and definitely not often enough!!!). Anyway, I would
greatly appreciate any trade opportunities and/or setlist from the show.

One more thing, does anyone know when he will release his first RCA record-
ing?

Thanks in advance,

Tubbs/Carter Drum Duel

nebuious@aol.com Sun Apr 24 19:19:31 1994

So what was the Phish/DMB Drum Extravaganza like?? Did Carter blow Fishman
out of the water?

In my estimation as a musician (a guitarist who loves playing drums for sheer
mindless entertainment), Carter is not only a MUCH better drummer than John
Fishman, but is in a band that fits more to the style of a more show-offy
type of drummer.

What was the premise of it? Did they just jam together (a weird thing for
drummers to do, but cool if it works out)?

Inquiring minds wish to know.

Typical Setlists In These Typical Times

nebuious@aol.com Sun Apr 24 19:19:40 1994

Is it just me (and it may be since my DMB collection now stands at 6 tapes.
Thanks Ben!), or are DMB setlists very similar? I have noticed that there
Nancies, Graves, Sweet World, Granny, True Reflections, Seek up, Satellite,
and Typical Situation.
I know that's a lot of songs, but they seem to ALWAYS be played together.
How many songs DO DMB have? The lyrics file says 28 or something around
there, but that doesn't mean every song is written out.

Anyway, just an observation.

dave and phish

bobgee@merle.acns.nwu.edu Mon Apr 25 02:37:00 1994

Not sure why I haven't seen much concerning these epic shows -- but probably
everyone is still filtering home (Alex, Kerry, JMU people, myself, etc.)

Well, both nites were amazing as setlists and reviews on Phish.net indicate.
Dave jumping on Trey's trampoline during You Enjoy Myself and getting the
whole routine perfectly in sinc with Mike was so much fun to watch. And then
the jam into Somewhere Over the Rainbow. According to Jeff that was totally
unrehearsed. LeRoi just belted that out in a quiet moment and everyone else
went with it. Boyd seemd to be having a little trouble fitting in with
everyone else that nite, but looked and sounded much more comfortable the next
nite. Which brings me to perhaps the best encore at any show by anyone ever.
The Winston-Salem encore was definitely the musical highlite of my life. And
listneing to it on tape doesn't even capture the energy and excitement that
was going on on that stage and in the crowd. Everyone was SO into this encore.
I thought it was so classy for Phish to let DMB basically lead their encore.
After a five minute intense Drums jam (not intense like Panic, but still not
bad) and a five minute jam, Dave sneaked in the opening notes to Watchtower as
he always plays it. Everything went about as it normally does (with Phish
adding subtle intrumentals) until he got to the quiet part whre LeRoi nornally
solos. Well, it was Trey with an electrifying solo, then Boyd brought the
house down (and lost his glasses) with a ripping solo, then LeRoi brought it
down with a mellow shorter solo. Than Dave finished the tune as usual, but
apparantly the bands had not rehearsed a finish to the tune, and Fishman kept
drumming after the First "No Reason to Get Excited." In all, Dave repeated
that Four times and finally ended it by raising his guitar above his head and
ever (I know I'm including a lot of musicians here) In all the encore lasted
21 minutes.

The only downer of the two shows was Dave choice of setlists the two nites. I
was EXTREMELY disapointed (as were many Phish fans) that Dave chose to repeat
Tripping, Rhyme and Reason, Two Step, Ants. In Lex they played Seek Up and
Best in addition, and in W-S I can't think of the other two off hand. I'm sure
someone can post complete and accurate setlists. I just can't understand the
logic behind the decision to go with such a similar setlist when DMB had to
have known that there would be many of the same folks at both shows. Dave
certainly has 12 good tunes and some that are much better (IMO) than the ones
he chose. Incidentally the only song Phish repeated from one nite to the other
was Big Ball Jam which doesn't even really count. Dave definitely gained the
respect of many Phish fans with what he and the rest of the band did on stage
with Phish, but I thought his sets lacked the kind of musical creativity and
inspiration that Phish displays every nite.

sorry for the long post, but i'm sure that many folks were curious about these
shows. (good to see netters Kerry and Rick -- anyone else in that group on the
net? and fun getting kicked off the Wake campus twice)

bobgee@merle.acns.nwu.edu Mon Apr 25 02:54:48 1994

Caught this show on the way back from the DMB/Phish shows. Well, it was a bit
disappointing. They only got to play for about 1hr 20 mins. The bus broke down
in West Virginia (that's the new bus) and they were stuck in WVa. for 5 hours.
Thus, they arrived at the gig at 11 p.m. It was at the student union and
curfew is midnite. Well, they pushed it back to 12:30, but stil only enough
for one set and no encore. The crowd was also very annoying. They were a
drunken pretnetious boarding school type of crowd (just to generalize a little
:) ) and only knew Remember Two Things shit. (Sorry don't have a complete
setlist but it went something like this):

One Sweet
Tripping
Lie In Our Graves
Warehouse
Dancing Nancies
Satellite
Angel
Rhyme and Reason
Two Step
Ants

I'm pretty sure I didn't miss any, but it may be a bit jumbled it the middle.
Anyway great Angel and good to see Warehouse and Nancies (why couldn't they
have played those the nite before?)
The crowd was fairly non-responsive during non-R2T tunes when me and two
friends were dancing the hardest, and then they wnet crazy when the recognized
Satellite and Ants (two songs which are beginning to annoy me -- maybe I
should take a DMB break for a while)

Carter/Fishman

SPICE@DICKINSON.EDU Mon Apr 25 07:36:14 1994

stunningly good drummer but imo, fishman is better. and, to disagree more,
i think phish's music is much more diverse and showcases fishman's very
unique abilities just as well as (if not better than) dmb showcases carter's
incredible skill. dave (or the band, who can tell with them) has come up
with some really cool rhythms, but phish's music is damned complex. some of
the things fishman does with odd meters and such would be almost impossible
for most drummers to do. musicians have a difficult enough time playing in
odd meters (7/8, 13/12, 15/16, etc.) and the way phish makes transitions
between them (take yem for example) is stunning. shit, this is turning into
a dave v. phish post but getting back to the original topic of fishman and
carter, i think they are the best two drummers i've ever seen live. my
brother said that at a show recently he was able to stand behind carter for
most of the show and watch his drumming. he commented that carter seems to
be almost completely ambidextrous -- plays his high hat with either hand just
as well, stuff like that. you also have to take into account the huge
difference in style between them. carter tends to be a bit flashier and a
bit more rock oriented while fishman leans towards jazz more (he doesn't hit
his drums as hard for one thing).

in their own worlds, though, i'd never replace either. just listen to a
carter drum solo and you'll realize how great he is. then listen to the
drumming in you enjoy myself and you'll understand the genius of fishman,
too.

sorry this is so long but i'm trying to make minaretsnet just a little more
lively -- it's been rather quiet here lately, it seems. and strangely quiet
with all of the cool stuff that has been happening lately (how about a nice
long review of the lexington show for those of us unlucky enough not be
there?!)

and a quick quote that i saw once that was funny. from memory so probably not
accurate (okay, definitely not accurate):

"king crimson was the only band i ever played with who could play in 15/16 time
and still afford to stay in nice hotels." -- bill bruford

Phish/DMB shows...

jcrother Mon Apr 25 12:35:26 1994

thought i'd throw in my two bits on this subject since it seems to
be bouncing around alot...

since both shops were already reviewed pretty extensively, i'll just add
that i was disapointed too. i caught a couple of the northeast shows
directly before the phish gigs in the south and heard two stepants...i
thought it was sick...but not after hearing it four nights....you can
only listen to one tune so much before it just dull...

...the show had me smilin most of the time however,....to tell you the
truth i was afraid these two bands were going to get together and not do
shit...Dmb was going to open for phish and that would be the end of
it...or more likely Boyd or Dave would come out to play a song.

....so in that sense i was completely satisfied that both bands jammed
out entirely...Carter and Jon are the shit...two of my favorite drummers
on the scene right now..i was happy to see them together...who cares
which one is better?...they both rock.

their old material. if this band starting playing varied setlists every
night there's no stopping them and no telling how far they would go....
with the new album should come new material.

Dave's Sets

cbuford@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Mon Apr 25 13:02:27 1994

To add to the agony of repetitive set lists, Van Riper's consisted of
much of the same. Opening with One Sweet World, dedicated to his nephews,
Dave played a fairly normal show. The usual Two Step-Ants, Best, Rhyme
or Reason, Recently. The highlight of the day was a inspired Quick Lay
with Boyd doin' some BEAUTIFUL soloing. Dave got really into it, and you
could see his veins poppin' out of his head, like the good old days.
Sported a Phish shirt during the Seek Up encore. Dave has a huge
songlist, and should be able to be very varied. I saw him every week this
summer at FZ and was never bored by a show, I've seen him 4 times in the
last month (Brown's Island, Matoaka, Lex, Van Riper's) and have found my
self dancing to the same versions of the same songs....what happened to
the wailing Tripping Billies intro, songs like So Much To Say, Cry
Freedom, Spotlight, and the beautiful perfection of Lover Lay Down?
Where's Boyd's Wah pedal????
till they get it the way they like, and then they leave it. I much more
enjoyed watching the band try new things to cover for Peter's absence and
things like the formation and progression of Quick Lay than the 30 sec
snare tap that reminds me of a certain disc...
in my 2 cents worth...hopefully spontenaity will return....

Re: MINARETS digest 156

mnewton@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Mon Apr 25 13:23:13 1994

two cents. First, the deal with Phish just goes to show how much farther
DMB has to go. DMB played for about 40 minutes to under 1,000 interested
fans. This is at a show in Virginia, where Dave would almost certainly
bring the biggest support. So many have voiced their disappointment to
me about the length of the set (if you can call it a set). However, this
is what happens when you are an Opening Act. Anyone who payed $17 just
to see DMB didn't know the billing of the show. I too was skeptical that
Phish would be such a big attraction, that is until another 5,000 people
came in for Phish's show. The last digest included an argument about
Carter and Fishman. Maybe what was said about Carter jamming is true,
but carter also doesn't leave his drum set and play the vaccuum or
harmonica or whatever. As far as style, only Leroi and Boyd seemed to
really fit well with Phish for the end jam. Dave certainly looked out of
place. As far as Carter fitting into a more show-off style, maybe yes,
being a better drummer is hard to argue. Fishman fits extremely well
into the eclectic jam style of Phish. So to end this, i just want to
remind anyone that complained about the show, Phish is hugely successful
and selling out 5-6,000 seats consistently is not beyond them. For DMB,
5,000 seats is still a ways off. Let's not forget that Phish has been at
it almost 3x's as long as DMB!! Dave will get what's coming to them,
just don't expect it right away. As far as the show went, WOW!! great
mix of old and new Phish, the Somewhere Over... was great and the encore
just made the mood so much more incredible. Couldn't ask for a better
opening of what will surely be a site for future concerts

so how about some rsponses to this show and the Winston show.

Boy O Boy is opening up. The weather is supposed to be great. There's

Did I mention that it was FREE??? Get your Williamsburg, Richmond,

respectivly...seriously..come down. The show starts at 6...

Last time Dave played there, he played a little bar after the show called

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Tue Apr 26 14:41:44 1994

here's a few cents about the latest goings on around here. i was
at both lexington and winston-salem, and found both shows to be
extremely intense. i walked into both shows not expecting much out
of dave, and got 'not much.' i did really like the new rhyme or reason,
but the rest of the set seemed so stock, and so utterly predictable.
but then he came out for the encore at lex, and, i'd agree, seemed
terribly out of place. but even though his guitar seemed utterly
inaudibly, his stage presence was still there. he definitly only had
but so much time to learn the tramp routine, but still performed it
flawlessly, and then when all of dmb came out, everything seemed to
mesh amazingly well. i never even realized that carter and fishman
had switched until i heard the vacuum(but i will admit that i could
here a decided difference once i was aware--but it was not better or
worse, just different).
then at winston-salem, i knew so well that dave was not going to be
that much different that i decided not to make a solid effort to get
in in time to see him, and must say that for me, a person who has
seen every dmb song a dozen times and would rather see phish for now,
that this was a prudent decision. but then, after living the religious
experience of the encore, i realized that dave has made his initial
impression on me(and impressed i was), and right now needs to concentrate
on making his fan base bigger. at this point, i can accept that the
way dave wants to make his career right now is to play familiar tunes,
so that when i say "wait 'til you hear this rocking tune called two
step" i can count on him to play it and impress my freind, even if
i'm getting a bit bored. i wonder if anyone knows what phish was
up to in 1986. i've heard tapes, and i'd have to say that i doubt i'll
ever make them a part of my permanent collection. at any rate, winston
salem was indeed sic, and i can't wait to get my grubby little paws on
tapes of both shows...

poi

bpwalsh@gibbs.oit.unc.edu Wed Apr 27 14:59:56 1994

i saw poi dog pondering last night and highly reccomend that you catch
the show if it's in town. they're from hawaii, so they don't come around
that often. the reason i'm posting this here is because they sort of
remind me of DMB - not just because they have a horn section and
violinist, but because they combine international influences with rock to
create a combination of feelgood and serious songs, all of which rock.
sound familiar? go see them.

let's finish the lyrics file.

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Wed Apr 27 19:21:30 1994

as of today, april 27, there are only 5 songs not included in the
lyrics file, but they all seem fairly easy to figure out.

#34
#36
drive in, drive out
rhyme or reason
two step

there's also an untitled song laying around on a few tapes, and
if anyone feels like transcribing the lyrics to anti-noise, go
right ahead. i'd also like to get some of the more outlandish
versions of dave's older songs. i've heard some pretty whacked
out versions of warehouse, seek up, granny, and a bunch of others
that had no form when he first started playing them acoustically.

as for halloween, i've put the lyrics that dave was originally going

love...
love...
love...
love...

since there simply are no two halloween's alike, it does it no justice
to lock it away as a stock song in the lyrics file, even if he did
put it on a cd.

i'll be sending out the lyrics file in it's current form next week.
then, if we get it finished by the end of the summer, i'll forward it
to everyone first week of school, and that will be the end of the
mailing list format.

Two Step Without Piano?

Being relatively new to the ways of the Matthews, I was listening to Two

CLARITY, and I came up with this great question that will just be EATEN up by

How the hell do they do the ending of Two Step without piano? It seems

Electric Ballroom jam (?)

SEAWA@vax.rhodes.edu Thu Apr 28 01:42:06 1994

Not long ago, I remember seeing a post (from a Kerry?) concerning an
interlude in Warehouse called soemthing like the subj of this message...
The show date that was given, I think, was 11/3/93, but though Warehouse
was played at this show, and the show as a whole was pretty good,
Warehouse didn't seem spectacualr, and I didn't pick out any t

shit, faulty bs key...
Anyway, that ver of Warehouse didn't have anything special about it,
and I am trying to get a clarification of the show date that has this
Ballroom jam thing on it... Warehouse is my current fav song, and I'd
love to get a copy of the show in question..
Thanks in advance,

Poi... Not from Hawaii

bdietz@acs.bu.edu Thu Apr 28 09:32:38 1994

I'd like to clarify the "Poi from Hawaii" stuff. Poi Dog Pondering is
from Chicago. They mostly play the Chicago area and the midwest. They
may have some silly sounding "Hawaiian" songs like "Te Manu Pukarua" or
"Aloha Honalulu", but they are not from Hawaii.

electric ballroom jam during warehouse......?

what the hell is an electric ballroom jam? sounds interesting. sounds
like the kind of thing dave should be doing more often rather than
playing satellite everynight....

can anyone elaborate on this? i don't remember the earlier post

I know that some of the members of the Pondering Dog were from Hawaii, and
I actually think the band got together in Texas. Kind of a remnants of
former bands getting together to blend a buch of different styles. Though
I'm not in the band so I can't say for sure.

there's a couple of Warehouses from 11/92 that go into this same mellow
groovy Waltzey style jam. I think that in Feb or March of 93 there are
one or two also. Let me check the tapes to be sure. It's funny to think
that Warehouse could take off and go so many different places.
Warehouse-Wild Thing-Warehouse was cool the two times he did it.
I'd never seen it labeled as Electric Ballroom Jam, that describes it
perfectly though. Boyd went heavy on the delay and wah, ala Baboon Farm...

The big controversey

gspice@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Thu Apr 28 20:31:42 1994

"Carter could NEVER do what Fishman
does, and Fishman could NEVER do what Carter does."-Kerry

Very true. Why bother comparing musicians unless they play the same style?
But, back to the Lex show. Did anyone else get the impression that Phish
was rather confused through most of the night? They sounded so spaced
out the whole night. The jams inbetween verses were really weird,
lacking consistency, not much rhythm, etc. Not that I didn't enjoy
myself, but, it wasn't like other Phish shows I've been to. Also, this
might realne, but di t seem like there wer lotofnis comin out of tPhi
miking? I heard flanging all over the place and just sounds that I don't
and can't figure that they made. Anyone?
Leroi definately saved the day at the end, though. The jam was, again,
lacking everything until he played the theme. I was really impressed by
how he took charge of the situation. That's it. Graham

Carter vs. Fish

STU_GJCARRIE@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Thu Apr 28 23:51:11 1994

I believe it was Ben Sterling who asked if Carter blew Fishman out of the water

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! YOU FOOL!

Carter is NOT as you put it "a far superior drummer to Fishman"...
Carter himself recognizes this and he acknowledged it to Fish at Lexington...

Will you all please realize that the Dave Matthews Band is not the pinnacle of
musical achievement?

Both are extremely good drummers, but I think there are a lot of things Fish
CAN do that Carter CANNOT...maybe that's why Fish was giving Carter pointers.
In your face drumming is not neccessarily the best Ben...

..yes, minarets is run from the Univ. of Vermont and by a student (that's
me)...as it turns out, i will not be living here this summer so i will
not have direct access....so what does this mean? ..i don't know.

most likely, i'll be able to telnet from a host site somewhere
but....that gets confusing/difficult/timeconsuming/$$.....i'll also be on
the road alot so finding a computer and an internet site will be few and
far between...

Minarets can [probably] go on without anyone administrating it for
awhile....i guess we'll see. Hopefully i'll get the chance to check in
every week or so and i imagine traffic will be slow since they will be in
the studio alot of the time and not doing live shows....the subscribers
that still have access ove the summer just need to catch any
subscribe/undubscribe/digestify messages sent to minarets and get them on
the right path..

anone have any suggestions? anyone think this won't work?

everybody except themselves. There music has more rhythm than just about
anyone. Leroi sounded good, but I wouldn't say that he "saved the day,"
considering that Phish had already played Antelope and Harry Hood, and Leroi
wasn't going to top those.

VERY SAD BUT TRUE

btanen@husc.harvard.edu Fri Apr 29 13:44:31 1994

I write to you all today with some extremely sad news that I just heard
from someone at Local 186, the club, in Allston MA, at which Poi Dog
Pondering was scheduled to play this saturday night.

The show is cancelled.

There will be no PPD concert this saturday, and in fact, apparently the
entire tour has been cancelled. This is because someone in the band (the
woman did not say who) was diagnosed with cancer this week. [added
evidence, Irving Plaza show was just cancelled, because of 'illness'.]

This is obviously an extremely unfortunate situation. Since (and this is
going out to various people so forgive me if it doesn't apply to you)
there has been some talk lately about this band, I figured you ought to
know. [Daniel, forward to HORDEnet if you would?]

Poi Dog Pondering

cgf2d@uva.pcmail.virginia.edu Fri Apr 29 20:07:56 1994

I was originally waiting for Jen Sansbury to get back on-line
since she's much more up on her Poi Dog Pondering trivia than I
am, but not knowing when she'll be back, I suppose I'll add my
two cents' worth.

Poi Dog Pondering originally formed in Hawaii but, with some
member changes, became noticed and got their recording deal in
Austin. They fairly recently moved their home base to Chicago
(accompanied by more personnel shifts).

The current tour was in support of their fourth national release,
but sadly has had to be cancelled. Brigid Murphy, the significant
other of Frank Orrall (the band's singer), has had a relapse of
cancer and is back in the hospital. No less upsetting, but for
Chicago show is the only one on the tour that will still go on.

Flame me personally please...

Well, no, I won't. I think it's kind of rude to be so rude to someone then
request any followups to email.
in case you haven't been paying attention to the general evolution of internet,
when someone blatently opens himself up for slamming, most of the people
around him don't feel like watching the slam happen, because it makes for
really tedious listserv digests. when someone invites you to flame him
personally, it's simply the best way to go. for that matter, when someone
doesn't invite you to do it, it's even better. in fact, don't flame him.
just flood his mailbox full of useless wastes of disk space. ;)

Also, if you're going to say one drummer is superior to another, it would be
nice to explain how/why, other than just "x can do things y can't".

i'll justify it simply by saying, or more like reiterating, that fishman
can't do a lot of things that carter can. i'll say that gregg was a bit
immature (sorry gregg;) by answering ben's "carter is better than fishman"
by saying "your wrong, fishman is better than carter," but it really is
what ben was asking for. both bands have there own peaks and valleys, and
saying anything to the effect that one is better than the other is useless
and great flamebait. it holds true through the entire genre. i rank my
1)phish
2)dave
3)widespread panic
4)everything
5)samples
top bands that belong in the shitter with my next unloading of
1)the dead
2)aru
3)blues traveler
4)god street wine

OBVIOUSLY i disagree with some people on some aspects here, and even
though my point here is that saying that one band is the greatest and
another sucks, i'm still going to get flamed hardcore for saying that
the dead sucks. if it helps, read as saying "i don't like the dead"

it goes to show just how funny the gay bee posts really were. maybe
some fifty lines worth of precious minarets net space, and everyone
gets all tee'd off because "we're wasting your time" or "you don't
understand." lighten' up for chrissakes. anyone who's spent more
than ten minutes on an internet bb has dealt with it, and i can say
look in the mirror when you decide to flame me and gregg for getting
drunk, kicking back, and laughing our asses off when we decide to throw
a wrench in the works and watch the light show that ensues.

sorry to people across the county who don't care what's going on at

tomorrow (sunday, may 1st), i'm going to broadcast the february 22nd

recently ep. beginning at 12 noon and running until about 2:00 or
so. i figure i'll post the setlist for the matter of people who
tape 1/set I
side I side II

song that jane likes true reflections
help myself
what would you say

tape 2/set II
side 1 side 2
ants marching ...thing

typical situation watchtower
granny dancing nancies

as for the first tape, satellite will prolly fade in because i missed the
first few seconds of the song, and it cuts in somewhat abruptly, (but
not that muched is missed)
the jimi thing cuts over to the second side, but it happens at a really
quiet part just after his guitar solo.
my apologies, but halloween will have to be censored. there certain
times during the day when i could get away with it, but 2:00 on a sunday
afternoon might be pushing it. i'll try to keep it as graceful as possible.
(i was thinking of editing in a blurb of riker's mailbox, acutally;).
the remainder of the show will be all phish, just random stuff. it'll
make for a great filler for the some 25 minutes of extra space on the
first tape.
enjoy...

Satellite Question/2nd & Hopefully Last Grovel

nebuious@aol.com Sat Apr 30 16:30:43 1994

Okay, I have a question.

In the lyrics file, it says Satellite is in the R2T CD booklet, so there's no
need to transcribe the lyrics, but it gives lyrics for the song "Satellite
(After Her)"

The inevitable question I have is what is the difference? Lyrics, music,
direction of song, all of the above, or NONE of the above?

Second, I know I was JUST groveling for tapes, but I somehow lost contact
with a lot of you.
If anyone is interested in helping out a guy with a measly 6 tapes of DMB
(though I have TONS of Phish and other stuff), get in touch.

Similar set lists

dforbis@birch.ee.vt.edu Sun May 1 14:01:18 1994

On the topic of a lot of the recent setlists being similar, I was
wondering what would peoples reaction be to Dave playing more covers?

Covers don't take as long for the band to learn as new material, so
that could easily be a way for the band to diversify their shows.
Everybody (I think) enjoys hearing "Watchtower", 'cause they do it
so well, and I think they could probably orchestrate a bunch of other
well and not-so-well known songs by other artists into their regular
repetoire.

I don't think that playing covers would necessarily detract from their
From three fairly random setlists of the Grateful Dead, out of
48 songs, 18 were covers. They certainly don't play covers for lack
of original material - that's what keeps their concerts interesting,
a lot of diversity, and a huge base of songs to pick from.

Just a thought. Come on Dave, play "Disco Duck"! (just kidding!)

I'm sure that we'll be seeing a big growth in material in the coming months.
peace, postive exam energy,
Blake

That also brings up a good point - where is all of the new material?
It almost seems that Dave is taking an awful long time writing new songs,
at least compared with other Horde bands. I can probably count the new
songs from last year on one hand. Does this mean that we can't expect
DMB to continue long into the future, as they will run out of material?
I hope not.

Me & Julio was good - as was "Hey Joe" (with Boyd on vocals and wah-wah
pedal). Anybody ever hear their version of "Sympathy for the Devil"?
I have about 15 seconds of it at the end of a tape.

my
 1)phish
 2)dave
 3)widespread panic (I sing like I'm taking a shit)
 4)everything
 5)samples
top bands that belong in the shitter with my next unloading of
 1)the dead
2)aru (I hope you mean Col.Bruce, and not ARU)
 3)blues traveler
 4)god street wine

OBVIOUSLY i disagree with some people on some aspects here, and even
though my point here is that saying that one band is the greatest and
another sucks, i'm still going to get flamed hardcore for saying that
the dead sucks. if it helps, read as saying "i don't like the dead"

I think the worst thing I've ever read on this net is that the Samples are
one of the top 5 bands around, but the Dead deserve to be in the shitter with
the next unloading of too much beer.
(Remember, don't read this as the Samples suck, just read it like "I don't
like the Samples").
1) they are the worst band I've ever heard
2) ALL their stuff sounds the same
3) The lead singer can't sing, write, play guitar, or do anything cool with
the effects he uses on 90% of his songs
4) Their keyboardist, bassist, and drummer suck.
5) "Did you ever eat brown rice?"--DMB set break 7-27-93
6) No improvisational skills
Hey, at least they have a good light show (not compared to Phish's however),
and the lead singer is a nice guy.

1) Great songs, lyrics, jams, singing; better drugs in the parking lot than
in a Samples parking lot.
2) I take it you've never heard 8-27-72?
3) Phil Lesh beats the shit out of ANYONE except Mike Gordon (and even that
is a close call)
4) Cryptical--other one If you don't like this, something is wrong.
5) 30 years and still going. How good will DMB be in the year 2021?

I'm going to echo Blake's response to my first message, hope that's
 OK with you, BC!

fine with me Dave...

That also brings up a good point - where is all of the new material?

Dave has it hidden in his sock drawer...

It almost seems that Dave is taking an awful long time writing new songs,
at least compared with other Horde bands. I can probably count the new
songs from last year on one hand. Does this mean that we can't expect
DMB to continue long into the future, as they will run out of material?
 I hope not.

I'm pretty sure that Dave has hundreds of songs written that we've never
heard. At least some music and lyrics that will gel out in the studio.
I'm really glad that they're taking some time off. They need to
PRACTICE (something that they haven't done alot of) and work out new
material in the practice space as oppossed to on stage. Dave doesn't
seem as comfortable playing a virgin song onstage anymore. If he
screwed up in front of 100 people at Trax or the Floodzone, no big
deal...I think I'll really miss the evolution of songwriting on stage.
QLAG might be our last example of that (with the exception of the
Atlanta song which has yet to be played again, I THINK...) Hopefully
the jams will NEVER go away. I thnk they're having to much fun to quit
anytime soon. I don't think there is anything stale about the music
yet, they just need to vary the setlist a little. Maybe seeing the same
faces in the crwod night after night will let them know that people
actually tour with them, and get sick of the same songs night after night.

well, gotta study, peace everyone, good luck on exams, be safe.

THIS is funny...funniest thing I've heard all year...

okay..Kerry and I actually agree on something. this is spooky.

 2) I take it you've never heard 8-27-72?

heard it...smoked bowls the size of woks to it...so acid tinged you can
hear the liquid flowing. It's one of my fave shows.
Anyone that doesn't have this show and 2/13/70 should not say they don't

cecliff@vt.edu Sun May 1 20:04:58 1994

let's all calm down. obviously we don't all agree on the 'top ten' (or
five or a hundred) bands. what we need to focus on is that we do like the
dave matthews band. if i reeled out some of the other bands i liked and
hated, i'd get thrashed, so let's all just say that our likes and dislikes
are facets of ourselves, and that these facets are respected by all.
regardless of opinion. let's shrug this shit off. everybody just go
listen to a rocking version of 'seekup'. or take dave's advice as he bagan
'recently' at vanripers a week ago... 'some people like to dance, some
people don't. some people like to drink, others don't. some people like
to smoke a bowl, some people don't' (or something like that). so respect
that i don't smoke bowls, and respect that i smoke marlboro lights. don't
judge me, and don't flame me. i'm me, you're you. hold hands. smile. and
give others hugs more often. people need to be told they're appreciated
more often...

good call on the Big City/Spotlight.....i listened to spotlight again and

okay, another dave argument is evolving so i would like to add some fire.

to start, don't put down the dead. period. without them, much of the
"scene" which we all appreciate would not be possible. yes crypt...
other one will blow your mind!!! never been a better driving song for
the road than Aligator/ drumz/ Goin down the road from Fillmore E. '71!!!!

yes, i agree the samples suck. but so what, what do i know, and what
does anyone else care about my oppinion of the samples??? Dave needs
more covers, more new songs, more new something. I expected more when
they left the regular tuesday night trax schedule. By the way, let's
have some input/response on where DMB will be in 2021. This is a very
cool thought.

nonstop continuous suck classics. we just heard Big Bottoms from Spinal
Tap. Here's another from the oldie but forgotten file, "Recently" by the
Dave Matthews Group" just kidding , ......ah. but am i. seriosly, i
want to know what all of you think will happen in the long run. Opening
for the Jerry garcia band (jerry would be 77 years old by then , but
still playing!!!!) maybe, it could happen.. so you better watch.

by the way Carter really does suck as a drummer. Highly overrated.
okay. enough of this. gotta go

dave's new material

i don't know for a fact that dave even has any new material beyond
say goodbye, but i have a feeling that he's pulling a ploy similar
to what phish did for hoist. i think he wants there to be some
surprise to his new cd.

as for 'big city,' go back and listen carefully to the lyrics, and
maybe the base chord progression, and see if it reminds you of
spotlight in any way. i've never heard the song, so i have no idea,
but it's possible.

IS GETTING RIDICULOUS. LET'S JUST SETTLE FOR VAN MORRISON AS BEING THE

LISTEN TO CHORDS. IN THE EARLIER STAGES OF THE SONG THEY PLAYED IT VERY
STRANGELY, WITHOUT THE USUAL CHORUS LINE. AND AS FOR THE PERSON WHO SAID
ARU SUCKED, HUH. HEY EVERYONE, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A FEW (CLARE AND

RHYME AND REASON

COGBILLJ@guvax.acc.georgetown.edu Mon May 2 20:53:47 1994

RHYME AND REASON (7/27/93 FZ)

So well I find myself this time
All to myself sometimes and I'm on a train
On a bus with everybody around me seated
Looking at the faces shutting me out
And I wonder why behind these eyes we hide--every day, every night
Don't speak to strangers, don't speak to another
Unless he might compromise your way
My head won't leave my head alone
I don't believe it, well, till I'm dead and gone
My head won't leave my head alone
I don't believe it, well, till I'm six feet underground

Hurry, hurry self, don't drag your feet behind you
Get what you need to do in your time, get it done
And don't leave any stone unturned, unless you
No door unopened unless you know what's behind
Oh don't dare answer to the left to the right
Rund down the middle path, what happens when you
See the path down the middle, and we're running in circles
Getting nowhere and nowhere fast
My head won't leave my head alone
I don't believe it, well, till I'm dead and gone
My head won't leave my head alone
I don't believe it till I'm six feet underground, there's a place
Where I'll find quiet, peace and quiet
And these lies in my head they leave me going
Leave me going, leave me going yeah, yeah, yeah...

So I might take a chance to talk to a stranger, on a bus
Yes I don't know why you're sitting quiet, (have you a life)
Four hours down this highway, not a word
Spoken between us, make me lose my mind, so I say
'Hey how you do, a photograph of your family, looks so nice
Like the way your hair fall back, yes I do'
'Don't talk to me please leave me alone
I'm busy, got a lot, a lot on my mind'
My head won't leave my head alone
I don't believe it, well, till I'm dead and gone
My head won't leave my head alone
I don't believe it till I'm low and low and dead be again
Don't ask why, why you bored of me, little girl
And I now, I wonder why, wonder why
We can't work it out, we can work it out

My head won't leave my head alone
I don't believe it till I'm dead, dead and gone
My head won't leave my head alone
I don't believe it till I'm rotting, rotting, rotting lie
Lie rotting, rotting lie, lie, lie...

Turn the windows are open, don't leave
The moment's passed I shudder what I could've done
Sometimes occurring, ( )
And the urge to open your mouth, don't shut it
Don't swallow your thought again
Open up and screeeeeam it, screeeam it, screeeeam....

********************************************************************

I guess this is just a little too late, but I've had so much to do and
finally got a chance to transcribe the lyrics. I realize this song is
like Seek Up in that he often changes the lyrics, but I thought this
was a great version.

DAve's lyrics

COGBILLJ@guvax.acc.georgetown.edu Mon May 2 21:05:12 1994

Well I'm glad that I finally sat down to actually figure out what DAve
is saying in Rhyme and Reason, cuz after doing so i realized what a
truly great song it is, musically and lyrically. I'd encourage
whoever hasn't heard this version to listen to it or at least read the
lyrics. It's one of Dave's few songs where he actually tells a story
somewhat. it's the story of some person who is driving himself crazy
because all the people around him are too wrapped up in their own
lives and their own routines to take the time to reach out and notice
him. Possibly it's these people who are too afraid of getting hurt,
but drive themselves to their graves for lack of affection. Wow.

If I could only have a dab of Dave's inspiration.

While on the topic of lyrics...
The ( ) in Blue WAter, I now believe is "gashes" as in blood.

Instead of "Well no I'd love to stay" in WAREHOUSE, I believe it is
"My love, I love to stay there."

Okey doke, that's all I's got to say.

rhyme and reason; yet another smooth version...

cecliff@vt.edu Mon May 2 21:54:36 1994

just thought i'd share some alternate lyrics...

12/2/93 (solo)

oh me, the lights are on, leave me crying again...
i wonder, wonder if i could get out of this dizzy, dizzy spell
my god, my eyes are open but i feel i'm locked behind
can't get out, can't get what i need till you're
out out out of my mind...

chorus.... (which we all know...)

so all these grooves seem to have me mellow
aww, sometimes she even treats me well
and the day begins i think maybe i can handle
get my way out of this hell
but, oh god, then the day continues, copy words, television
get me turnin about...
and i don't know, don't know if i can find a reason,
find a reason to live this one out.

my head won't leave my head alone,
and i don't believe it will till i'm dead and gone.
my head won't leave my head alone,
and i don't believe it will till i'm six feet underground in my grave
why won't i leave here, why won't i leave here
let it, why? and again... god i said, 'why won't you leave me by myself?'

why, see, at this moment i feel i might be losing,
losing what little i've got.
i feel, i feel i might be losing hold, losing hold of what i'm not.
lay, lay me down... awwww
and my deathbed looks so comfortable now, it looks soft as hell

my head won't leave my head alone
i don't believe it will till i'm dead and gone
my head won't leave my head alone
i don't believe it will till i'm six feet underground in my grave
when i leaving, leaving a light, a life...why?
i won't say... i don't under-understand or even know...
god knows it... oh, won't you leave me, wait here...
me and this scar...oh, and the darkness, seems so cold-filled..
the darkness will lead me home....

relay the underlying emotion of the song. i just thought i'd share them,
since not all of us have vast amounts of tape on tape, and dave's lyrical
phantasm is one of the most intriguing things about this band's lyrics...
let me see if i can dig out my copy of drive-in drive out and i'll send
them in too....
smiles,

Song Title?

EWHESSE@AMHERST.BITNET Mon May 2 22:19:32 1994

Hello all,
I was just wondering if any one out there could help me identify a tune Dave
does solo. The versions I have are on 7/6/93 at Trax (opens up), 11/3/93 FZ,
and 11/9/93 Trax (both after Say Goodbye). It's a very simple tune w/ Dave
keeping the rhythm goin' as he does in Pay For, kind of rocking back and forth
He often apologizes for not knowing it very well and asks for the aegis of
artistic license before beginning. A couple lyrics include (he really distorts h
"Old Mother" in the lyrics file and was wondering if that could be it. Some
other lyrics could fit that sort of theme. If any one can help out w/ this one
I'd appreciate it.
By the way, I think that it's time we start talking about the namesake of this
net again and not each other. Also, thank you very much to all those who
contributed to the lyrics file. It's a treasury for us all to enjoy.
Take care and best of luck (or whatever you need) on finals,
Eric

just a thought

EWHESSE@AMHERST.BITNET Tue May 3 00:08:38 1994

While I think that it's a nice idea (in theory) to add Roi and Boyd to
Halloween, they've GOT to do something different than that godawful repeating
quarter note. It detracts from the power of the song and frankly annoys the
hell out of me. It would be much better if they did more things like Boyd
does when he mimics Dave's guitar and voice when it mellows out in the middle
and lilts down "why do run around here?..." Just a thought,
Eric

everybody except themselves. There music has more rhythm than just about
anyone. Leroi sounded good, but I wouldn't say that he "saved the day,"
considering that Phish had already played Antelope and Harry Hood, and Leroi
wasn't going to top those.

Again, I wasn't trying to compare the two bands! The 2 bands were
jamming and playing nothing and Leroi saved the day by giving them
something to play.

jcrother Tue May 3 02:16:01 1994

the Prism is at the intersection of Rugby Road and Grady. it is a coffee
huse in a big white house. cool atmosphere, herb tea and coffee only, no
drinking. one of dave's friends -song/songwriter Shannon Wohrl is also
performing.

Re: thoughts

kmk4g@uva.pcmail.virginia.edu Tue May 3 12:32:00 1994

by the way Carter really does suck as a drummer. Highly overrated.
okay. enough of this. gotta go

Maybe you just suck as a listener (unless you're kidding, which I hope you
are)

I thought their name was something more like Hogwaller Ramblers, but I
could be mistaken. I saw them open for DMB on 7/6/93 at Trax. They're
a pretty cool bluegrass band. One of their members is a lady who plays
 a mean washboard, no joke!

The Hogwaller Ramblers broke up in Sept 93.
I AM LEAVING FOR THE SUMMER IN ONE WEEK AND I WILL NOT MISS
THE CLOSE MINDEDNESS OF THIS NET. ALL OF THE TALK ABOUT WHICH BAND IS BEST
IS GETTING RIDICULOUS. LET'S JUST SETTLE FOR VAN MORRISON AS BEING THE
MASTER, THANKS. ALSO THAT BIG CITY SHIT IS SPOTLIGHT, YOU DON'T HAVE OT
LISTEN TO CHORDS. IN THE EARLIER STAGES OF THE SONG THEY PLAYED IT VERY
STRANGELY, WITHOUT THE USUAL CHORUS LINE. AND AS FOR THE PERSON WHO SAID
ARU SUCKED, HUH. HEY EVERYONE, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A FEW (CLARE AND
OTHERS) GET A GRIP. BEND OVER AND GIVE YOURSELF A BLOW JOB, MAYBE IT WILL
LIGHTEN YOU UP AND TAKE YOU OFF OF YOUR I'M A BADASS EGO HIGH....

IT HAS BEEN A JOY, LATER,
                                         COLLIER

You suck too, but what was your point?
instruments faster than anyone else doesn't mean they don't suck--"Compared
To What" sucks beyond belief.

My corrections for RHYME AND REASON (7/27/93 FZ) in parentheses

So well I find myself this time (Sometimes I find myself whispering to
All to myself sometimes and I'm on a train myself on a train)
On a bus with everybody around me seated (Or a bus)
Looking at the faces shutting me out (Looking at other faces shook me up)
And I wonder why behind these eyes we hide--every day, every night

'Hey how you do, a photograph of your family, looks so nice (can I
Like the way your hair fall back, yes I do'
'Don't talk to me please leave me alone
I'm busy, got a lot, a lot on my mind'
My head won't leave my head alone
I don't believe it, well, till I'm dead and gone
My head won't leave my head alone
I don't believe it till I'm low and low and dead be again (I don't believe
Don't ask why, why you bored of me, little girl
And I now, I wonder why, wonder why
We can't work it out, we can work it out

Sorry about the length

the first 'official' dave matthews band gig appears to be march 14, 1991.
