The only thing I heard regarding DMB and the Jerry Garcia Band was that there would not be a Halloween show this year because the band would be attending the Garcia show at Brendan Byrne Arena in New Jersey. This comes from a friend of the band and makes sense since they will be in NYC the on the 30th for the Wetlands gig.Top Permalink

dave matthews. it's like trying to explain phish language (or trying to explain putting the opening lines of 'dancing in the streets' on the beginning of recently(7-7-93, 7-14-93) and playing recently shorter with a few quotes from a rolling stones song that goes world around, you got my world turnin'"(same two shows). also, stefan once broke into 'the wild side' during the jam session of jimi thing(3-23-93). it's just a way of playing songs differently and livening up the show. rick thompson stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu "the tv's on...to me this explains it."Top Permalink
due to the fact that the dave matthews lyrics file is likely to change drastically from day to day, i've decided to set it up as a separate mailing list. i'll probably mail it out about once every two to three weeks, unless there are substantial changes in shorter amounts of time. anybody who requests the lyrics file will be added to the mailing list and will receive these updated versions as they become available, unless you request to not be added to the mailing list. if you are on the mailing list and wish not to be, let me know. i'm sending this notice to the net, and the people currently on the list. this list is being run out of my personal account, so to subscribe, send a request to the address below. rick thompson stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu "the tv's on...to me this explains it."Top Permalink

This FAQ was compiled with the gracious help of Ellis of Lemuria, Alex Crothers, Rick Thompson, and Gregg Carrier. Any questions which you feel should be added to this FAQ should be addressed to Rick Thompson at stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu. Who is the Dave Matthews Band? What is Minarets.Net and how do I subscribe? What about this new album? ======================================================================= Who is the Dave Matthews Band? Dave Mathews -- guitar, vocals (amazing voice!) Carter Beauford -- percussion, vocals (jam on!) Stefan Lessard -- bass (thump and grind, and he's 18!!) LeRoi Moore -- woodwinds (esp saxophone!!, flute), vocals ... The Dave Mathews Band draws from the distinct talents and styles of its five members to create a uniquely compelling pop sound that combines the influences of folk, jazz, rock, world beat, and reggae. Some of it seems like a cross between Bob Dylan, Hot Tuna, and Michael Stipe, parts are remniscent of a funky Miles Daves, and parts sound like the Seldom Scene and Ziggy Stardust mixed together. In an unknown show in the spring of 93, Dave described the song "One Sweet World" as a sort of "Virginia country funk," which is yet another way of inadequately describing their unique sound. ....Dave Mathews, the band's namesake and formerly a Charlottes- ville bartender, began assembling the group in 1991. A self- taught guitarist and an inspiring poet from South Africa, Dave Mathews has said that the goal of his music is "lifting spirits" and this band reaches that goal. ....Carter Beauford, a past regular on BET (Black Entertainment Television) and son of a jazz trumpet player, helps tie the band's various elements together. ....Stefan has played upright bass in clubs since he was 15, was 16 when DMB was formed, and continues to get more powerful and controlled every show. ....LeRoi has played with Carter and John D'Earth (amazing trumpet player!!; catch him on Bruce Hornsby's new disc and on a 60-show tour with Hornsby this fall) at paying gigs and informal jam sessions around Charlottesville for years; the man can jam!! to sing (but sounds great when he does), but man can he play that fiddle! At three HORDE shows this summer, as well as at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the crowd went NUTS each time Boyd appeared. Boyd played as wonderfully to that crowd of some 9,000 in July as he did on a lawn, in the rain, for ten folks sitting in grass last May. He's cool-natured and friendly beyond belief; all he wants is to play, and boy can he! You ain't heard Watchtower until you've heard the DMB's arrangement with Boyd's SMOKING solo! .....DMB has played ALL over Virginia, but has also played dates in SC, NC, GA, AL, NY, IL, CO, MD, DC, TN, and I can't begin to remember where else. You may have seen them or heard about them playing Feb. 6 at the Ritz (NYC) playing with members of the Allmans, Widespread, PHISH, Blues Traveler, and I've forgotten who else. -- Ellis * jeg5s@virginia.edu * POB 3240, Charlottesville,VA 22903 -- Graduate student, UVA Dept. of Sociology -- Administrator for rec.music.phish FAQ File ======================================================================== What is Minarets.Net and how do I subscribe? Basically minarets.Net was initially started by myself(Alex Crothers) with the help of Ellis of Lemuria and Eric Budke. I got involved with the DMB through my brother who began booking them when they first formed and is now their "unofficial" photographer. The name of the Net comes from a song that will appear on their forthcoming album (Nov. 2) and was suggested by Ellis. Originally Sreaming from the Minarets, the band shorten the name of the song to Minarets. So the name of the Net went from Sreaming_From_The_Minarets.Net to Minarets.Net. I guess we all got lucky. $-) This Net is somewhat different than other musical nets that you may be familiar with. To begin with it is not (yet) digestified so whenever you send a message to Minarets it gets sent to all the subscribers immediately. Another aspect of this net that is different than other nets is in the way you subscribe/unsubscribe. To subscribe send the message "subscribe minarets Your Name" to listproc@moose.uvm.edu. This mailing list is run through through the University of Vermont so it is subject to their rules/laws. So far this is the only way to sign up but I'm working on setting up an alias in the form minarets-request@moose.uvm.edu like many of the other nets. But for now you'll have to do it that way. Similarily that works with unsubscribe also. Once you are signed up, to send regular posts to Minarets just send them to minarets@moose.uvm.edu. It's as easy as that. Now a little bit about me. I'm a student at University of Vermont so I do have other things to do (i.e. tape trading, hiking, skiing, partying, recording bands that come through the area, and, oh yeah, studying) but hopeflly this won't take a lot of my time once I get it fine tuned. It can pretty much run itself. I hope. $-) If you have any problems or questions Thanks Alex Crothers ========================================================================== What about this new album? this information is provided by Thane Kerner, Charlottesville VA BaylorF@aol.com I'm the project manager of the DMB CD...the release date is now set for November 2! Hey All, There has been a thread on Rec.music.gdead regarding the best Watchtowers of all time. IMHO Dave put in his bid for the top spot last night with a solo version. It was out of control. Had the pleasure of driving down to Chicago Sunday to catch DMB at the Metro with the Samples what was disssssapointing was the massive 30 minute set they were allowed to play, though a truly excellent 30 minutes including watchtower the crowd, a Samples crowd no doubt, loved Boyd!!! i heard things like, "he's got to be possessed!" and after ants marching, "that was INCREDIBLE!" anyway boyd came out and jammed with the samples and let me tell y'all the crowd went wild when he first appeared on stage! nifty! Dave came out on stage as well... so we also had the pleasure of talking to LeRoy after the show nice guy! anyway he said the cd's release date is the 9th but they'd have some b/4 then, or something like that. it, but how does one approach them about it? Does anyone ever tape directly to an analog recorder from the soundboard, or is it strictly DAT? respond to a humble offer for a copy? It was a great show - the band was very energetic. The encores were great too.Top Permalink
From my experience, the band is very easy to work with in terms of taping. I've taped them several times, from the soundboard, with mikes, a blend of the two, to dat, analog, and have even seen people taping to home cassette decks. These guys are easy to get along with, and actually seem to appreciate the fact that they get taped. -- Daniel Blanchat "One should always retain some control over his blanchad@hamlet.uncg.edu his actions, for when we act on instict alone blanchat@plato.uncg.edu we become as the demons that wish to become us."Top Permalink
To Reid and whomever else is interested... Ever since a couple months ago, the DMB has been selling out The Bayou FAST!!! I was there the first time it sold out, but since then it has been happening earlier and earlier...sometimes as much as 3 hours before the show! Also, even if you are under 21...HAVE AN ID READY!! They are VERY STRICT about making sure you are 18 to get in. School ID's will not work. They will turn you down with anything other than a driver's license or some similar ID. I repeat...SCHOOL ID DOES NOT HOLD UP AT THE BAYOU. Overall, I find the Bayou kind of irritating as far as security and crowds although Dave usually does a good show. The crowds aren't as bad as at Trax, but your best bet in my book is the Flood Zone. i'm taking a survey for the lyrics file about the song pay for what you get. currently there are about 20 people on the mailing list(send a request to the address below if you want to subscribe), and about 1/4 of them say that the line in the second verse about "have you heard, that the bird in hand is much better than, any number free to wander" "have you heard, that the bird in hand is much better than, any number three to wonder" which, IMHO, is a more poetic play on words. send me your thoughts on the subject. rick thompson stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu jmu box 5388 harrisonburg, va 22807 it's gonna be an eternity in here...Top Permalink
(For those of you who don't know he was the keyboard player, and he left the band in late March of this year.) I saw DMB play at Salem College here in Winston-Salem on April 5, and apparently he had just left. During the intermission, I asked Boyd why he left. He said that since Peter was married and had just got a house, he was tired of all the traveling and wanted to be at home with his family. Hope that somewhat of answer. I don't remember the DMB ever having a keyboard player when I've seen them at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem. I could've missed him, but I honestly don't think he was at the shows I saw last fall. However, I also think that the songs of theirs that We Are Who We Are (C'vlle All-Stars) play sound great with a hammond organ, so maybe they should consider adding the All-Stars organ player :-). However, I also think that the songs of theirs that We Are Who We Are (C'vlle All-Stars) play sound great with a hammond organ, so maybe they should consider adding the All-Stars organ player :-). the dave matthews band used to have a keyboard player named Peter Grieser(sp?) who, as mentioned before, left the band in late March, 93. he played a pretty straigtforward synthesizer and added a lot of different touches to a lot of different songs. probably the most notable difference to the bands set is the loss of a piano solo in jimi thing. i also feel that dangerous hours(help myself), so much to say, dancing nancies, and cry freedom lost out big time with peter's leaving, not to mention the fact that they never do lover lay down anymore. something else that is not well known is the band used to have a second percussionist. i don't really know if he was ever a permanent part of the band, but he added a real nice touch to the bands overall sound, sort of like widespread panic's second percussionist. his name was miguel valdez and he passed away at the beginning of this year. if anything knows any more about miguel, i'd really like to know more about him. as for the hammond organist in c'ville all-stars, he's already playing (and has been for some time) with indecision, if he's the organist i'm thinking of. hope this helps... rick thompson stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu jmu box 5388 harrisonburg, va 22807 it's gonna be an eternity in here... i had a clue now it's gone forever...Top Permalink

last year and have failed to notice Peter playing keyboard. Granted, Peter was not as flashy and flamboyant as Boyd but what he lacked in this area he made up for in his playing. Many songs are just not the same since Peter has left. Lover, Cry Freedom, I'll back you up, are just a few examples. IMHO Peter also added a sense of professionalism to the band I can't really explain this, but I think Peter's quiet and reserved nature as well as his intensity were somewhat responsible. I keep hoping Peter will change his mind and return to the band or that the band would seek a replacement for him but so far I have signs at this. A few weeks ago I attended Van Riper's. While DMB was playing their set Warren Haynes joined in for Dancing Nanciees and it was incredible but I must admit I was hoping Warren Hayne's keyboardist would have joined in as well. He was sitting on the stage, intently listening as if waiting for an invitation to jam with the band. Unfortunately, none was extended for I feel he would make an excellent addition. percussionist for the band. He would sit in on a show every once in a while but had a band of his own (African Drum Fest) that occupied the majority of his time. I had the pleaure of seeing him perform at the Halloween show last year and he was incredible. Sadly, he passed away this spring and for those of you who don't know the song #34 is about him. 1) Does anyone know who the opening band was for the show the band played 2) Also, does anyone have a good copy of the Halloween show that I BrettTop Permalink
I was at the 8-31-93 show at trax (I beleive we're talking about the same show) and I saw no keyboards at all. I'm from ch'ville, but i go to school in NJ now, so it's hard to keep up with all the local goings on. My brother went to the show at hampden sydney a week or two ago and he said that Dave played a new song by himself which my brother thought was called Tired Again. Does anyone know anything about this song? I went to the wetlands show last night and I saw Dave play a song by himself as the first encore, but I don't think it was called tired again. No one that I talked to last night knew any of the songs. Could someone please post a setlist. As for comments on the show. I thought most of the first set blew. Dave seemed really nervous (compared to the second) and the music didn't flow very well. I thought the last song of the first set was pretty hot, and then pretty much all of the second set was very hot. This was my first time seeing these guys and due to the second set I was impressed. Here is the official and definitive information on the upcoming CD release by The disc is called "Remember Two Things." The release date is Tuesday, November 9. The band will play Trax that night, but three record stores will have midnight release parties at 12:01 am 11/9 (Plan 9 Charlottesville, P9 Richmond, and Town & Campus Harrisonburg). The track listing has been slightly modified since our previous announcement; Ants Marching/Tripping Billies/Recently/Satellite/One Sweet World/The Song That Jane Likes/Minarets/Seek Up/I'll Back You Up/Christmas Song. The songs were recorded at Trax in Charlottesville, Flood Zone (Richmond), The Muse (Nantucket) and one studio track, "Minarets," was recorded at Flat Five Studios in Salem, VA. Joh Alagia produced the disc along with the band. -The CD insert will include a complete lyric sheet. -A cassette will be available around the 1st of December. -Along with the album, a limited edition 22 x 28 poster featuring a large version of the stereogram on the CD cover will be available; the three stores doing the midnight opening will have them, but they will also be available at shows. -If your local store doesn't know about DMB, you can order the disk and/or poster directly from Bama Rags Records at (804) 979-9695. However, it will be much appreciated (even if you order direct) if you'll tell your local stores about the band and ask them to get some copies to sell. They can call Bama Rags directly to do so. The band is currently negotiating a major-label deal. It has become complicated because several new majors have become interested late in the game. The deal was supposed to be done by the end of this month, but a bidding war may ensue and delay things. In any event, there won't be any new DMB recorded product released other than Remember Two Things before the middle of 1994. Incidentally, the band's management does have access to this net and welcomes everyone's interest. On their behalf we say Thanks to Alex, Ellis and everyone responsible. Interesting messages will be passed on to band members often tak a while to get replies, because they travel a lot, so have patience.] Keep posting, and enjoy R2T.Top Permalink
Now that I think about it some more. The first set didn't really blow. It's just that Dave wasn't very impressive, I thought that the saz and violin player were excellent. The bass was pretty low in the mix and the drums filled in nicely. It's just Dave didn't seem to add much to the set and the others seemed way over his head. And that set I didn't care much for him. -- Eric Budke budkee@unvax.union.edu Union College Box 241 Fax (Subj. somebody wanted to know the set list from the show last night. I don't remember exactly what it was, but this is sort of it. I remember the first set, but it got a bit fuzzy in the second. Jimi Thing Seek Up An Emotion Song Jane likes One sweet world Pay for what you get Ants Marching Minarets Typical situation I get really fuzzy here, but they played True Reflections, Lie in our Graves, Tripping Billies, Help Myself, Satellite, Granny, and they closed the set with Recently. The two encores were a new song with Dave by himself, the name of which I don't know, and then Halloween. The set list is probably incomplete, cause they did play for a long time, so any additions or corrections are welcome. They had a friend sit in on True Reflections on sax and then later on Watchtower (sorry, i forgot to mention thet earlier) on sax and flute. I had seen this guy play with them once before in ch'ville. He did much better last night than when I saw him before. Anyway, I thought the show was really good. I didn't feel that Dave was tentative or quiet. He did have some problems with the sound-guy not getting it quite the way he wanted it till about half way through the first set, but that all got staightened out. The Jimi thing followed by an incredible Typical were excellent, in my mind. Plus, it was nice being so close to the band, and being able to see how they interact and communicate when they're on stage. It was kinda like the old days when they used to play the Eastern Standard in ch'ville (summer of 91. Dave and Ed, who are both on this net, used to go to those shows with me). Anyway, it was a great way to celebrate an early Halloween. If there is anyone who made tapes and is interested in doing a tree, please speak up, cause it's definately a show worth having on tape. -Drew DevereuxTop Permalink

1) It has not been a year since the last Lover...a while, but no year... 2) Dave told me at a show in January this year that they stopped doing Me & Julio because he liked the original so much. I love DMB's version and tried to convince him to play it again but to no avail. I think that one is gone for good. 3) Regarding the keyboardist from Indecision...last I heard the DMB had no plans for getting a new keyboardist at all. Sad...I really miss Peter on Dancing Nancies among countless others. 4) I think it blows that the album is all live. (except for Minarets) Live Dave tapes have been circulating for years. They play so many live shows a year that a live album could have been released long ago. Also, they HAVE done studio work beyond Minarets.Peter was involved in some studio work so maybe that has something to do with its not being released. Who knows. I just really wanted to hear what the band could do in the studio. I'm not sure that I plan to buy the album now because I can get plenty of live DMB and most of the songs on the album I already own several copies of. Any thoughts on this? 5) What does everyone think about having lyrics in the liner notes? I don't like it personally because there has always been a lot of mystery around Dave's lyrics mostly due to his singing style. I think that's pretty cool. Well part of the deal with Phish, and hopefully with bands like BT, GSW, Panic, ARU et al, is that they allow you to tape. But in return the least you could do is buy their albums. These bands aren't that old, and buying their album if you really enjoy their stuff should be no big deal and it won't cost you tons of $$. It's not like you have to catch up with the Dead's albums. Especially sice this is a self released disc, which means the band had to shell out the bucks for it. I don't know much about Dave and the band, but it's doubtful that all of the money they are bringing in is going to themselves. I'm sure there is a ton of overhead that due to economies of scale is costing them a bunch. Whereas a record company would probably pick up the tab for some things. will put money in their pockets/reimburse them for the costs of putting the disc out. And second it will impress the record people who are bidding for them and the record stores that are selling them. This gets Dave and the band some more money to play around with (buy some guitar strings) and gets their name recognized at stores so it will be easier to find their next record, when it isn't available at stores and most likely is a studio album. 5) What does everyone think about having lyrics in the liner notes? I don't like it personally because there has always been a lot of mystery around Dave's lyrics mostly due to his singing style. I think that's pretty cool. Sort of undecided on this one. I think that if they are gonna put lyrics, they should put them all in and make them legible. If they aren't gonna do the above they should leave them out. -- Eric Budke budkee@unvax.union.edu Union College Box 241 Fax (Subj. Dave played a new song by himself at the 11/27/93 show at Zollmann's in Lexington, VA and in the beginning he said he didn't have a title for it, but after he played it, he called it "A Quick Lay and Goodbye" yet asked the crowd if they had a better name for it, so I don't think it has a permanent name yet. Also, parts of it sound like the song he opened the 7/14/93 Floodzone show which was pretty much just a jam but we refer to it as "Anti-noise Song" I hope that helps. Sue DeutschTop Permalink
I was at the 8-31-93 show at trax (I beleive we're talking about the same show) and I saw no keyboards at all. that's because there weren't any keyboards to 'see'. what my freind was trying to say is that she heard an overdub on top of the music. sorry about that. Does Dave ever play electric? no, it's not very conducive to his style. one thing to notice is the fact that his acoustic guitars are actually made specifically to be plugged in. i don't think they even have a hallow body. his acoustic sound is what he's looking for. i only have one tape where he even tries to perform a lead, trading off almost note for note w/ leroi, and he doesn't seem very into it. some of his rhythm lines are much more complicated than a lot of lead lines. it took me most of the summer to pick out minarets, tripping billies recently and so much to say, and even having practiced them for months, i know that it's impossible for me, or probably anybody else to do them justice. i'll just leave it at dave matthews is one of the most phenomenal guitarists i've ever listened to. I think Dave should look into some heavier guage string. He was breaking about one per song in the second set. i've noticed that when he breaks a string, it just means he's more into the music he's playing, playing harder, and playing better. when the whole band is jammin' away, he tends to just wail on the prominent bass strings to the chords necessary for that part of the song. actually, watch the strings he does break. usually it's the heavier bass strings which are alread b/w 25-50 gauge. making them any thicker probably won't help him much. rick thompson stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu jmu box 5388 harrisonburg, va 22807 it's gonna be an eternity in here...Top Permalink

Ok, upon listening to my tape from 11/92, I discovered that yes, Peter was playing, and did make a contribution to the band. But I don't think that keyboards are vital to a band with the diversity of the DMB. With their instrumentation, keyboards just take time away from the other players. That said, I would still be very pleased if Doug became a member of the band, as the hammond organ is distinctive enough, and Doug is skilled enough to mesh well. -- Daniel Blanchat "One should always retain some control over his blanchad@hamlet.uncg.edu his actions, for when we act on instict alone blanchat@plato.uncg.edu we become as the demons that wish to become us."Top Permalink

The shallow body and closed hole hamper its natural acoustic sound, but sound fine when amplified (the resonated sound from the soundbox is not really needed to produce volume-- the string's effect on the sound comes through much stronger). The main idea behind this type of body is to eliminate the problems with feedback that one can get using more traditional acoustic guitars. The slimmer body also is a little more comfortable for stage work, sort of like an electric. versa. That's what makes his style so unique and cool.Top Permalink
In reply to some of the comments and questions posted since the latest The CD is based on live shows, since only "Minarets" and "Seek Up" are purely studio recordings. However, the recordings have been overdubbed, remixed, and otherwise improved. They are of a significantly higher quality than any live tape of this band...and believe me, we have tapes of about all of 'em. While I agree that the band could really shine in the studio, that will happen best with a major-label budget. This product is an excellent introduction to the band and will meet the immediate demands of the existing fan base. If most DMB fans have to choose between this excellent record now, or waiting for a truly studio LP in mid-'94 (which we will get anyway), I think they will "vote with their pocketbooks" as the saying goes. We shall see. In regard to the lyrics being included, this is always a quandry. However, I think we get the best of both worlds, because while we will see clearly the writing talent Dave has, the mystery will be retained because the lyrics, as many of you know, change from show to show, and will continue to do so. So, you will get the lyrics as of a certain night in October 1993, but it is not by any means the definitive or permanent set. For the record, they will be printed clearly and completely. I hope as many of you as can will be in Charlottesville for the 9th...it should be an amazing evening.Top Permalink

THIS IS THE OFFICIAL POSTING OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE DAVE MATHEWS structure itself, 3) show info and setlists, and 4) band info, IDs, and description. - - BIG YEAH to those who offered to dub, esp those (hoorah Bart!) with particularly generous dubbing offers. It's folks like you that keep the generations low, the quality high, and music right! - I simply can't do what I originally wanted, which was only two levels below me; there are just too many folks, even given those that dropped due to money or closeness to someone else on the tree. But rest assured that only the best decks are parents, and the very best are parents of parents. About 80% of the requests included an offer to be a parent, but the math won't allow me to accept all of those offers. - However, this means that IF YOU MISSED THE TREE, there's a good chance that you can hop on now. Those that didnt offer to dub became a 5; those that did but whose offer was not accepted became a 3 or a 4, on the presumption that, if someone not yet on the tree wants to be, they can easily find someone who offered to tape and who is closer to the top of the structure. - Email with any problems pronto. - rotation. Carter Beauford -- percussion, vocals (jam on!) Stefan Lessard -- bass (thump and grind, and he's 18!!) LeRoi Moore -- woodwinds (esp saxophone!!, flute), vocals - - The Dave Mathews Band draws from the distinct talents and styles of its five members to create a uniquely compelling pop sound that combines the influences of folk, jazz, rock, world beat, and reggae. Some of it seems like a cross between Bob Dylan, Hot Tuna, and Michael Stipe, parts are remniscent of a funky Miles Daves, and parts sound like the Seldom Scene and Ziggy Stardust mixed together. Dave Mathews, the band's namesake and formerly a Charlottesville bartender, began assembling the group in 1991. A self-taught guitarist and an inspiring poet from South Africa, Dave Mathews has said that the goal of his music is "lifting spirits" and this band reaches that goal. Carter Beauford, a past regular on BET (Black Entertainment Television) and son of a jazz trumpet player, helps tie the band's various elements together. Stefan has played upright bass in clubs since he was 15, was 16 when DMB was formed, and continues to get more powerful and controlled every show. LeRoi has played with Carter and John D'Earth (amazing trumpet player!!; catch him on Bruce Hornsby's new disc and on a 60-show tour with Hornsby this fall) at paying gigs and informal jam sessions around Charlottesville for years; the man can jam!! to sing (but sounds great when he does), but man can he play that fiddle! - DMB has played ALL over Virginia, but has also played dates in SC, NC, GA, AL, NY, IL, CO, MD, DC, TN, and I can't begin to remember where else. You may have seen them or heard about them playing Feb. 6 at the Ritz (NYC) playing with members of the Allmans, Widespread, PHISH, Blues Traveler, and I've forgotten who else. But I don't think that keyboards are vital to a band with the diversity of the DMB. With their instrumentation, keyboards just take time away from the other players. although 11-17-92(i assume this is the particular show you speak of) is one of the best tapes i own, i find that peter's work is mixed much to far forward, and even ruin's halloween and typical. look to some other shows, if you can find them, particularly 3-23-93 and van ryper's 92(watch for an upcoming tree), and you can see exactly what feel peter should really provide for the band. That said, I would still be very pleased if Doug became a member of the band, as the hammond organ is distinctive enough, and Doug is skilled enough to mesh well. -- my thoughts here are that although doug is a very impressive hammond organ player, i feel(IMNSHO) that there are only a few songs in dave's set that sound right with hammond organ. i really enjoy doug's touch when he does sit in, but i really don't think i'd like him to join the band. rick thompson stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu jmu box 5388 harrisonburg, va 22807 it's gonna be an eternity in here...Top Permalink
i am wondering also about the new song that drew spoke of. i was at HSC with drew's brother and i don't think that that song had anything to do with a quick lay and goodbye. nor did it have any references to cheap wine?????? last nights show was by far one of the most incredible dave matthews shows i've ever seen, and everybody i've talked to about it agrees. dave opened the show with an acoustic set, which i haven't seen him do in quite some time(although, i know he has done it). the first set rhyme or reason * ...new song * i'll back you up * jimi thing typical situation true reflections lie in our graves warehouse granny rhyme or reason *--acoustic rumors were floating that had played lover as a soundcheck and so a lot of us were hoping for the best coming into the second set, which he opend with (another long lost fav--)best of what's around. after a pretty standard song that jane likes, dave got behind the microphone and started babbling about a song he hadn't played in a while. then they broke into lover lay down, with a little help from a flautist, who's name escapes me. i've seen him play with the band before, and his addition to warehouse, lover lay down, and sax on a coupla others was really great. --set II best of what's around song that jane likes lover lay down what would you say two step seek up ...new song(again) * doobie thing-- happy b-day jam-- ants marching the happy b-day jam was in celebration of carter's b-day. he turned 16 yesterday. or was that 22? ;) at any rate, it was phenomenal. my tapes turned out _primo_ and me and gregg are going to run a tree sometime soon. it's the first time either one of us has attempted to run a tree so it might take a little time. plus, my seek up didn't turn out, so i'm sending it to one of the other 6 recorders (that's right, there's 7 master's of this show) to have it redone. which reminds me, the tree will have a dat branch. at any rate, we can only hope that next tuesday will be as good, and if it is, whoa, watch out... ps- i've seen the poster, and it's impressive... rick thompson stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu jmu box 5388 harrisonburg, va 22807 it's gonna be an eternity in here...Top Permalink

Okay, pholks. As one of my various occupations, I write the press releases and listings for TRAX every week and then batch fax them all over the state to newspapers, magazines, etc. description of the act. eg Gibb Droll was "Hendrix-esque guitar pyrotechnics" and The Authority was "most popular funk band in New York". For DMB, I feel like I've run out of good descriptions. So, give me 3-6 words, something that'll fit on the line along with the name and the date. These things are DIMP (significantly important, for the weak-hearted vocabularists), especially in catching newswriters' attention and getting them to give an extra special boost to publicity efforts for the band and their shows. If I just keep saying "Central Virginia's favorite college rockers" or "original, unique, and smoking" I'm both communicating virtually nil about their sound and missing the point, which is to help make them sound amazing to folks that havent heard them, as well as to folks that have heard of them 100's of times but, we think, could always give them a little more print play. Post em to the net, or send em to me. I need a new one once a week by 11 pm on Sunday. Thanks! newspapers (esp. student run papers at schools besides UVA), magazines (esp. youth, college, or music oriented), newsletters, tabloids, etc that might make mention of DMB and TRAX events, please get me their name, a contact person, and a fax number (phone number if you don't have one.) squeeze in a couple of more hours between 2 am and 6 am (the most productive hours of the day for freaks, it seems), Id love to hear them. :) -- Ellis * jeg5s@virginia.edu * POB 3240, Charlottesville,VA 22903 -- Graduate student, UVA Dept. of Sociology -- Administrator for rec.music.phish FAQ FileTop Permalink

If you're driving in from out of town, let them know that at the door, especially if you're driving in from out of state. I think they'd like to know that, and if they know that folks are driving as much as some of you are (four hours? wow!), then there's a good chance that some gigs could be added closer, to meet that demand. So walk on down to TRAX, tromp through that door, and say, "Hi! I'm a Minaret Head from ______. This is gonna be a great show!" For most shows, doors open at 9 p.m, tickets are $6(tack on an extra dollar if your under 21), and the show starts around 10:30-11:00. Some nights, DMB is out of town and TRAX features !ALMA! or the Charlottesville All-Stars, both of which are various combinations of Reynolds!!!!!!), etc, and also includes some members of The Dave Matthews _Band_ such as Boyd, Leroi, and Carter. For the most part, DMB plays TRAX on Tuesdays and (I think this part is still right) the Floodzone (Richmond, VA) on Wednesdays. On some occasions, as there was last night (10/19), there may be an opening band. Last night was the Hatters, formerly the Mad Hatters. On Peter...this is from Dave...Apparently Peter left only because the schedule was too much and he was tired of it...Dave didn't seem apprehensive at all about discussing the Peter situation, but said he wasn't going to play People People because he and Pete wrote it together. He did say he'd like to record it sometime. On the Poster...Cool...no other word for it...Remember two things...the two things on the poster...hope you all can see it as quickly as I did. Takes some time for most folks. On the flute...Richard Harding is his name and he's a really nice guy. I saw him at my first DMB show a little over a year ago, but Tuesday was the first time I met him. On a keyboardist...Dave said they aren't really looking. That's about it...read y'all later... *******************The devious gelatin holding me fast************************* * Gregg Carrier stu_gjcarrie@vax1.acs.jmu.edu * * JMU Box 1734 :) ;) :D :P * * Harrisonburg, VA 22807 (703) JMU-KIND * ****************I try to move now but you let me move last*********************Top Permalink
I read about the band the Hatters in the latest digest. If someone has some information or tapes of the band contact me at wottongm@ctrvax.vanderbilt.edu. I read about them in Relix magazine. They are supposedly great. Thanks,Top Permalink
Does anybody have the phone number to Ziggy's (where Dave is playing Friday night)? I'd like to call them and get directions, I've never been there. Any comments on the venue? Good crowd? Good acoustics? -DaveTop Permalink
To get to ziggy's from I-40, take BUSINESS 40, not I-40. This means coming from the east, in greensboro, take the Kernersville/Business 40 exit right after the Sandy Ridge Road exit. Then take the Cherry Street exit from Bus-40. Follow Cherry Street (its 1 way) all the way past the W-S LJVM Coliseum. Turn RIGHT on Baity street, which is the first street past the Deacon Blvd light (right past Cactus Jacks Steak House). Ziggy's is on the left, past Music Loft. get over crowded. Its owned by the same guy who owns Tracks in C'ville. They've got great accoustics, and the bar is well laid out. However, its semi-open air, so you may wanna bring a jacket. Tapers get there early, because when it gets crowded, you will have a hard time setting up. I recommend taping from the first rail, at the (()) mark on the rail if you're using mikes. I have alwayas gotten excellent results from this location. Its stereo center for the room, and close enough that you can use omni caps and not get a lot of crowd noise, making for some really sweet tapes. You may want to bring an extention cord aand some duct tape, so that you don't need to run from batteries. -- Daniel Blanchat "One should always retain some control over his blanchad@hamlet.uncg.edu his actions, for when we act on instict alone blanchat@plato.uncg.edu we become as the demons that wish to become us."Top Permalink
Does anyone have the set list that DMB played at Red Rocks? I was at the show (where I first hear/heard of the band) and I'd love to know the songs that they played. Thanks... P.S. Have a nice day. --Top Permalink
NOTICED THE "THAT'S MY BLOOD DOWN THERE" PART IS FROM THE NEVILLE BROTHERS "MY BLOOD" OFF OF THEIR YELLOW MOON ALBUM? A FRIEND AND I PICKED UP ON IT AND THIS WOULD MAKE SENSE BECAUSE IN "MY BLOOD" THEY REFER TO AFRICA. HE DID PLAY WITH THEM THIS SUMMER, MAYBE SOME CONNECTION? WHERE IS DAVE REALLY FROM? Did anyone out there happen to catch Greg Howard play bass on the "chapman stick" this summer when Stephan broke his hand? What is this instrument and how do you play it? He plays a solo and I though it was actually a duet with Dave until I heard Dave comment on how Greg only uses two hands!Does anyone know ? KwonTop Permalink

Does anyone know if the release of DMB's CD is going to affect taping from the soundboard?Top Permalink
i don't really know that much about the hatters, but i do know that they recently put out a live cd. though the musicians are very talented, they tend to put too much effort into sounding exactly like blues traveler. i feel they could be much better if they started looking for a more original feeling. i would have to say, though, that you should keep an eye out for them to be in next years horde. rick thompson stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu jmu box 5388 harrisonburg, va 22807 it's gonna be an eternity in here...Top Permalink
hey, i'm gonna start downloading digests onto floppy, so that in the future, back issues will be available. if anyone happens to have digests 1-11,13, or 15, could you send them to me? as far as current availability of back issues go... for right now i can forward digests 12,14,16-18 to any new subscriber who wants them, but that will change in the middel of next week. btw, i'm going out of town this weekend, so all requests will be processed next week. thanx everyone... just so rick doesn't get multiple copies of digest 2-11, 13, and 15 (lots of mailbox space!), i thought i'd tell the net i sent 'em to him. he may still need the first one, though. i hope someone else hadn't already done it. oh, while i'm here, i should tell y'all that i finally got to hear some live DMB tapes tonight and that i'm going to the ARU/DMB show in Boston (yipeee!). cool tunes.... i'm psyched! love, daniel ----gnome boy-------Top Permalink
am I missing something? I have only been receiving undigested messages. Is there ALSO a digest, or are there two lists, one of people who get the mail split up, and one who get the mail digested? If the latter is the case, I'll stay on the split up list, but I would rather not miss anything. BTW, tonight's show at Ziggy's was really intense. I'll leave the set list to one of the more anal out there :-) :-) :-) awesome encore...best watchtower I've heard. I happened to catch those shows with Greg Howard and he was absolutely amazing. He plays a bass that stands up on end (like a regular acoustic bass you'd see in a classy jazz band or an orchestra or something). However, it's much more thin and, as I recall, it had 8 strings. 4 of the strings seemed to be low strings and probably in the same arrangement as a bass (E, A, D, G). Then there were 4 strings on the other side that were an octave higher. The amazing thing is that he plays both sets of strings at the same time by fretting the strings really hard. The sound is really rich and the man can really jam by himself. I remember at the Trax show I saw that he played some long solo thing (maybe with Dave?) that was unbelievable. The only person I've ever seen who has a similar style is the jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan who plays two guitars at once (with the same technique of fretting the strings really hard to get the notes to sound). And likewise, Stanley can really make some incredible music by himself (check out his album "Standards, vol. 1"). The show I saw with Greg on bass was very good but I got the impression that they hadn't been able to teach him too many of the songs because they didn't play too many that night and there was a lot of filler stuff. I think Dave might have started out that show by himself playing for about 50 minutes -- which was a treat in itself. Reid -SPICE@DICKINSON.EDUTop Permalink
BTW, tonight's show at Ziggy's was really intense. I'll leave the set list to one of the more anal out there :-) :-) :-) awesome encore...best watchtower I've heard. Anal!!?!! Me??? Ok, well, I'm gonna post the set lists, so maybe I am. ;-) and, as somebody pointed out last week, it tends to get overcrowded. Big time overcrowded. If it wasn't for such a great show, I would have been miserable there. I'm not sure if I'll go back, I may just stick with Trax. Set 1: Set 2: Satellite that I hadn't heard before. It was a few minutes long, and really nice and mellow. Too bad some drunk fools were standing right in front of Leroi while he's playing screaming "ANTS MARCHING!!!" over and over. What a way to reck a vibe. See my next post for details on "A Quick Lay & Goodbye" -DaveTop Permalink
1) Last night at Ziggy's, Dave introduced that song as "Help Myself". 2) Dave played a new song last night. Apparently he has two sets -DaveTop Permalink
As Ben said it would be great if we all turned out for some of the upcoming northeast shows. Unfortunatley, for some of us that is a bit difficult if not impossible. Anyway the point is I would like everyone to talk to your friends who go to school up there and talk up these shows and try to establish a northeast fan base. In case you haven't seen the The shows with ARU might be a little steep, probably about $15 or so but should be well worth the ticket price. The next order of business refers to Greg Howard. The man is incredible. I misss (oops) I missed the show this summer in which he filled in for Stephan when he cut his hand but I was lucky enough to catch him at Trax on 9/7/93. He played for about a half hour between DMB sets and was fantastic. It was truly amazing to watch him play the Chapman Stick and I would strongly encourage anyone to check him out if you get the chance sometime. At this show he also played with a drummer, Johnny Newman, I think was his name and they meshed well. Supposedly Newman has played with DMB too. Anyone know anything about this? Anyway, after the show I bought Greg Howard's Cd which they were selling at the show. Its super and I would highly recommend it. You might have difficulty finding it in local record stores but here's the adress they give on the cd sleeve. Espresso The title of the cd is "Stick Figures" BrettTop Permalink
The shows with ARU might be a little steep, probably about $15 or so but should be well worth the ticket price. well, the Boston show tix are $8, plus TicketBastard charges bring them up to $10.75 well worth the price indeed! i've heard the Paradise is small, so i ordered tix today, to be safe. maybe we MineratsNetters can be as cool as PhishNetters and we can all get together at the show, maybe we need a hand signal or something... 8-) seriously, though, what netters will be there besides ben and i and maybe someone from the NC DMB office? feel free to email me... we cybernauts must stick together... hello, this is alex Crothers and I "run" minarets.net. That doesn't entail all that much work but... I have a request..... I am looking to put together some comprehensive collection of DMB stuff. Now don't read into this and think I'm trying to put together a DMB vault or library or some other nonsense. I'm merely trying to get most of what's been recorded (analog and DAT). Now if what you have is on DAT GREAT! I'd like a copy of it please. If what you have is on analog that's alright too. Obviously I'd like to get the best copies (lowest gen.--master???) of the shows that are only on analog so I can then transfer them over to DAT. This is going to take a bit of collaboration and working together but hopefully it will work out. If you have any DATs please get in touch with me. If you have something on analog, try to remember who you got it off of and get in touch with that and have them get in touch with me. I basically want to try and trace the analog tapes as far back to the source as possible. I know this sounds like a pain in the ass and will probably require some EFFORT on people's part but hopefully we can come together and make this work. We already have a FAQ and a lyric file, what if we had a psuedo-vault??? I suppose I'm sort of volunteering for this position of "vault keeper" at least until DMB starts taping everything on DAT (they don't do this now do they??) I have lots to trade for these tapes and will even go as far to say I will do a two-for-one special on any tapes I get. All my stuff is on DAT (mostly SBDs) so it's crispy clear and easily transfered to analog tapes also. A sample of what I have and have access aud), plus 65+ other randowm bands on DAT. So I'll most definetely have something to offer you. thanksTop Permalink

1) i saw the show on july 7, with greg howard and must say that it added quite an interesting touch to the sound of the band. i can also say that they did a really interesting version of typical situation, recently, and warehouse. if all comes through, i'll be picking up a copy of the show this week at the cd release party, and i'll give you some more details. for any netters in the richmond area, his cd 'stick figures' can be picked up at any digits location. 2)as for 'help myself', before dave changed the lyrics from desparate hours to dangerous hours, it was called desparate hours, and introduced as such. i plan to ask dave about it the first chance i get, but until then, i'm gonna go ahead and leave it in the lyrics file as 'dangerous hours(help myself)'. 3)i had something else to say, but i forgot what it was. oh well...;) rick thompson stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu jmu box 5388 harrisonburg, va 22807 it's gonna be an eternity in here...Top Permalink
hello It's me again. :) HOPEFULLY, I'm going to Boston on Thurs and catch all the ARU and DMB shows in Boston and Connecticut. Like I said...Hopefully Of course, I was also planning on going to Wetlands but my ride backed out at the last moment. Oh well...these things happen I saw a couple of people from the net that are planning to be there should I shave "DMB" into my head so we'll recognize one another??? If I come I'll be taping also By the way, there are about 75 people on minarets. :) Is that good or bad?? I think it's a pretty cool size right now. Just enough traffic to keep it going and manageable with just the right amount of information. This sounds stupid, what am I rambling about anyway, catch you in Boston-I'm the one with a fro and a SV3700 shouldn't be too many of those. :) alex CrothersTop Permalink

ok, so this is a hidden attempt to find someone who will volunteer an ftp/gopher accesible archive site. jmu isn't. for now the digests are going to have to be kept on floppy disc, and will be almost completely inaccessible. the faq and lyrics files are easily manageable from within my account, i just have to distribute them on the basis of requests. if you want either just send me a note, (sorry to be so repetitive, i'm going to try to get alex to append something to the bottom of the digests that says what i keep saying every week). at any rate, if anybody has a way to store these files in an accesible place and is willing to maintain the site, please let me know. you won't have to deal with changing any files, just storing them. you will have to be reponsible to storing the digests, but that's just a matter of downloading them to discspace. any volunteers?(i'm not expecting anything....) also, i said i was going to post the faq, and i am. i'm mailing it in next, and like i said, it's pretty long these days. about 550 lines (that's about 25-30 pages in e-mail terms). so, just thought i'd warn everyone...don't worry, this will be a very infrequent occurance... rick thompson stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu jmu box 5388 harrisonburg, va 22807 it's gonna be an eternity in here...Top Permalink
I saw two people on the net that were going (Ben and Gnome Boy-whoever the hell that is) Yeah! My question exactly. Who are these weirdos on our network? What is the meaning of these odd names floating around MinaretsNet? I mean, what with our love for such traditional music and all, wouldn't you think a guy could stick to something more normal, like say maybe "ben" or "alex"? I mean, i've seen such strange pseudonyms on this net -- i think i saw both a "Gnome Boy" and a "Greenfling" from up around Rhode Island or somewhere else where weirdos dwell. Not to mention someone actually from the good ol' home state of NC had some strange concoction for a name -- like "Jeremy of Aglide" i believe. He was talking about Ziggy's (yeah, and what kind of a name is Ziggy anyway???) Seriously, does anyone know where "Aglide" is? I've never heard of it. Let's get these kooks out of our personal cyberspace. I hear we're 75 strong these days -- surely we can spare on or two -- it's all for Family Values and Decent Names, remember? anyone with the decency and good sense to despise these foolish names should join the M.A.R.Y. foundation (Minaretsnetters Against Radical Yokles) by sending a check for $19.75 to 12600 Ridgehaven Road / Little Rock, AR / 72211. Or, if you'd prefer to donate cash, you can just bring it to me at the DMB show in Boston on Friday. I'll be that guy down by the front that looks like a gnome. See y'all there! GREAT STUFF HERE.... i picked up the cd last night at town and campus records here in harrisonburg, and i'd have to say that's this is a really strong debut cd, setting themselves up for a phenomenal follow up. ant marching, recently, satellite, christmas song and the song that jane likes are pretty much exactly what you expect them to be. but the rest of the songs have some interesting quirks--the intros to tripping billies and one sweet world were left off, and the jam sessions to minarets and seek up weren't included. i'd have to say that i like the way that this is set up, because it will help make their live shows even more powerful as they become more well known. dave brought tim reynolds in to play some backup guitar on i'll back you up and seek up, but as far as i'll back you up goes, i prefer stefan's bass solo. and don't worry about the lack of the violin solo on seek up, this studio version is _really_ good, probably the highlight of the cd, and runs a full 7 1/2 minutes as is. the best bonus of the cd is a sort of mystery bonus track appended to christmas song. when you get the cd, just let the cd go. it's a reprise of a song on the cd, and i'll leave it at that. anyway, i've got some serious lyrics file editing to get done, so i'll just let other people continue with comments on the cd... rick thompson stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu jmu box 5388 harrisonburg, va 22807 it's gonna be an eternity in here...Top Permalink
