Eric, Prof. Sweterlitsch, and myself. From Ellis and Eric I'd like some suggestions about introduction message. Do think it is necessary? Should I just get rid of it or maybe change it and have it explain about the DMB rather than all that technical info about ILP sessions? I've never used/tried ILP, any thoughts? Might it be useful/fun a little later? Just trying to sort through all this stuff out. I don't want to jump into this prematurely without having it the way it will serve the mass the best. thanks for the help. Alex CrothersTop Permalink

---------- Forwarded message ---------- The cover is a stereogram that was specially created for this project...perhaps you've seen sterograms...they're abstract fields of fragmented shapes of color, but if you stare "past" them (eg, look at yr own reflection in the glass over the art) then you eventually see a very distinct 3D shape...in this case, a hand with two fingers up (the album title is "Remember Two Things"). It's a pretty wild effect. We're also making a poster for sale at gigs with a large version of the cover image and a small DMB photo at the bottom. Don't forget to get your local record store to call about stocking the CD! They need to call Coran Capshaw, (804) 979-9695 to get info & order. This will be a huge help! Thanks. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- .... Dave Mathews -- guitar, vocals (amazing voice!) Carter Beauford -- percussion, vocals (jam on!) Stefan Lessard -- bass (thump and grind, and he's 18!!) LeRoi Moore -- woodwinds (esp saxophone!!, flute), vocals ... The Dave Mathews Band draws from the distinct talents and styles of its five members to create a uniquely compelling pop sound that combines the influences of folk, jazz, rock, world beat, and reggae. Some of it seems like a cross between Bob Dylan, Hot Tuna, and Michael Stipe, parts are remniscent of a funky Miles Daves, and parts sound like the Seldom Scene and Ziggy Stardust mixed together. Dave Mathews, the band's namesake and formerly a Charlottesville bartender, began assembling the group in 1991. A self-taught guitarist and an inspiring poet from South Africa, Dave Mathews has said that the goal of his music is "lifting spirits" and this band reaches that goal. Carter Beauford, a past regular on BET (Black Entertainment Television) and son of a jazz trumpet player, helps tie the band's various elements together. Stefan has played upright bass in clubs since he was 15, was 16 when DMB was formed, and continues to get more powerful and controlled every show. LeRoi has played with Carter and John D'Earth (amazing trumpet player!!; catch him on Bruce Hornsby's new disc and on a 60-show tour with Hornsby this fall) at paying gigs and informal jam sessions around Charlottesville for years; the man can jam!! to sing (but sounds great when he does), but man can he play that fiddle! At three HORDE shows this summer, as well as at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the crowd went NUTS each time Boyd appeared. Boyd played as wonderfully to that crowd of some 9,000 in July as he did on a lawn, in the rain, for ten folks sitting in grass last May. He's cool-natured and friendly beyond belief; all he wants is to play, and boy can he! You ain't heard Watchtower until you've heard the DMB's arrangement with Boyd's SMOKING solo! .....DMB has played ALL over Virginia, but has also played dates in SC, NC, GA, AL, NY, IL, CO, MD, DC, TN, and I can't begin to remember where else. Wow. That's all I've got to say. The show was incredible. First time I've seen them, and no tapes (yet), so all the songs were unfamiliar, but I just can't think of the words to say how great they were. Especially Mr. Fiddle and Mr. Woodwind. (yes, I could look up the FAQ, but I'm still on a musical high from the show). Anyway, although I'm sure most people reading this group have seen them before, if you haven't, by all means do it. Ok, so that wasn't all I had to say.Top Permalink

The new album-- WOW! Aside from the songs that'll be on it and all that jazz, did anyone note the producer? A former girlfriend and still good friend of mine as an older sister who went to Yale. She was seeing this guy from the D.C. area. He had a tape of this duo called Derryberry and Alagia. The first tape, called Southpaw, was a whole album with just the two of them singing w/ guitars (and occasionally you could here some bongos, congas, etc.). Then, a friend of mine came across another album by them called "Rutabaga Stew". This was a bit more of a full band arrangement with bass, electric guitars, etc. It was put out by a small label in Northern Virginia, but I never got around to calling them to get more info. I found out about the DMB through totally separate channels (they opened for the Samples on 4/21/93 in New York). But what a weird coincidence. Does anyone know more about Alagia? As well, I'm interested in trading for more DMB boots. E-mail me if interested. Thanks for listening ------------- Ben Tanen ------------- btanen@husc.harvard.edu -------------Top Permalink
Hey everyone! I am as of yet unintroduced to the DMB, though on the current tree, and as I saw that the grovels have started, I thought I'd jump on the wagon. So if anyone can get me started, I would be much obliged. I have plenty to trade in the way of other bands. Also, I live in Burlington VT, so does anyone know, how to get the band up here. Obviously there are plenty of places to play if you are familiar with all the good bands playing up here. Anyway maybe if the management could get in touch with this system, especially since it's run out of Burlington maybe us northerners could get a chance to see these guys!!! I'm anxious to get my first taste! - murph -Top Permalink
i've got an idea that i think is pretty good as far as posting to minarets.net is concerned. seeing as this net is not nearly large enough to be digestified yet, we all have to deal with those pesky headers. whoever posted about getting some trees started, good idea but i couldn't seem to figure out who you are. i think you would be the management of this net, but i'm not sure. i say, that until we get this thing digestified, place your name and e-mail address at the bottom of each post so that everyone knows exactly who you are and how to get in touch with you without asking everyone. as far as getting some trees going, i have what seems to be the rather popular 11-17-92 show from trax, and also, a rather obscure sep 7 show, though it isn't quite complete(and never will be seeing as i was the only one recording). i'd be willing to seed either one, but i definitely don't have the time to organize a tree. 11-17-92 *granny(first time ever) *granny(same show, different lyrics) **cry freedom ***i'll back you up *recently warehouse pay for what you get angel from montgomery halloween true reflections typical situation me & julio jimi thing two step-- song that jane likes minarets lie in our graves blue water satellite ants marching lover lay down best of what's around(date unknown) one sweet world *christmas song(3-23-93) *--acoustic **--acoustic with help from peter(the keyboardist if you don't know) ***-acoustic with help from stefan i can't recall the sep 7 setlist right now, but i can say that it can either be seeded as a single 110 minute tape (but that would be evil, cause 110's drag so bad) or combined with the rest of 3-23-93 to fill three 90 minute tapes pretty well. i'll post the setlists for both sep 7 and 3-23 as soon as i can. rick@sedgwick stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu in search of the fearless wonder llama....Top Permalink
Yeah, getting these guys to come up north of 52nd street in manhattan (Roseland Ballroom) seems to be a feat not yet accomplished. Too bad. There are of course plenty of prime places (Burlington, Cambridge, etc.) but it may be that they're not too confident on getting a turn-out. I think this net will help show management that we're aware of the great music. perhaps the net will help, depending on how closely involved DMB "officials" are. are they, or is this grassroots fans? if the management's not following the net, some snailmail might be encouraging enough to bring DMB up to Providence (a far better location than Cambridge :) ). Seriously, if they are already working on a major-label signing, they ought to at least truck on up their side of the country... love, daniel ---------gnome boy-------- p.s. my post a second ago about "testing" doesn't mean to imply just that one tester, it's everyone new. try to get some info on what you're doing before you do it; the info is readily available. also, (as everyone reading this already knows) subscription requests shouldn't be sent to the whole readership. these points should be emphasized; some people are paying to read email, others already get bulk email and don't need extra with no content. but if you have something to say, SHOOT! hope to hear good info from you all... apoligies if i was too harsh on carleton college writer, didn't mean it personally.Top Permalink

Perhaps they could be written up in tabulature and posted or e-mailed to those who are interested. Any takers? i've actually picked out a substantial amount of dmb, but i'm absolutely no good at translating it into tab, particularly given the complexity of some of his changes. i tend to come to uva once a month and if i have the time i might look you up and maybe we could sit down and show each other what we know. rick thompson stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu "the tv's on...to me this explains it."Top Permalink
Daniel Gold asked the question whether this was a grassroots organization or not. well yes and no. It was started by me with the help of a couple of others (Eric and Ellis) but soon after it started (this weekend) I got E-mail from Thane Kerner and Baylor Fooks in Charlottesville, VA. These guys are the project mangers and designers for the new CD and work with closely with Dave, Coran and Ross. So it was started by fans (as it should be) but has the support of the band. I'm not sure how Thane and Baylor are connected to the Internet (is it through the office at Trax? I would doubt it.) but they are. I working on some of the bugs in the system right now so if you have any suggestions let me know. Thanks Alex CrothersTop Permalink
with dave matthews playing in c-ville every other week and richmond every other week, why won't he come to harrisonburg once a month. it's only an hour away. i know that the same arguments holds for us who want to see him, why don't we just go to c-ville? well, dave plays until 2am and we have classes on wednesday here at jmu, plus, i know a lot of people who don't have the access to get to c-ville, not to mention an entire freshman class who's never heard him. rumor has it that dave doesn't like the crowd that show up to see him when he comes here, but believe me, i've seen some pretty bad crowds at trax and c-ville. i even have a show where he gives subtle hints to the fact that he is really pissed at the crowd he's playing for at trax. somebody clue us 'burgers in. rick thompson stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu "the tv's on...to me this explains it."Top Permalink
Hey guys! In response to the theory that DMB would be afraid of a none- to-substantial fan base up here(N.E.), well all bands have to go that route, unless of course you're some pop band who's just made for video. Bands like the Ominous Seapods, Water, Motel Brown, Chin Ho!, etc. play around here sometimes to crowds less than 20. All except Water are semi-local bands. Actually I'm sure about MB either, but you get the point. You must expand to spread the word. Anyway, my $.02 - murph -Top Permalink

Dave Matthews Band is entirely too big for any bar in Harrisonburg. Unless the virtually worthless UPB at JMU chooses to hire them for a gig (which they probably won't...but maybe I'm wrong) the band wont play here. If you are a freshman at JMU, you should have no problem finding a ride to Charlottesville on a Tuesday or Richmond on a Wednesday (You will have a problem dealing with the Trax crowd I imagine ;) ) DMB is huge in this area. TONS of people go down every week. Good luck seeing the band...(BTW- I recommend seeing DMB at Flood Zone over Trax...over the past few months, the Trax crowds have gotten almost intolerable...affects the mood as well as the band's playing and en- joyment...I've seen them really miserable on the Trax stage on more than one occasion.)Top Permalink
i'm not a substantial beatles fan, and was not aware that those lines came from a beatles tune, but it in no way surprises me. i myself am an aspiring musician who finds that some of my own music, which i know i came up with on my own, is strikingly similar to a song i've never heard before. at the flood zone i've seen dave twice sing the opening lines of 'dancing in the streets' to (of all songs) recently. thanx for pointing this out to me(including those who e-mailed personal messages). as for the 'and even when i'll be dancing', i have three show that agree with that. we all know that dave tends to change lyrics on a moments notice, granny being a good example(the original, played on 11-17-92 was almost depressing), so you may be right as far as any shows you might have on tape. rick thompson stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu "the tv's on...to me this explains it."Top Permalink

What has happened to the crowd at Trax to make it so miserable? In my opinion, lately the Trax crowds have been too drunk, loud and disinterested in the music. Tuesday nights have become a social scene more than a musical experience. I think the club's proximity to the school affects the crowds. It's too easy for shitface "wahoos" to go to DMB and scream their heads off while trying to get laid. It's a far cry from the old Tuesday scene at Trax. I feel a wider touring range would help the band not only grow more widespread (ie the hungry North Easterners) but would also give them a fresh perspective on playing live. I have talked to Dave after Trax shows when he has been very bummed about the crowd. They just "stomp on your buzz".Top Permalink

i have a show which shows dave's contempt for the crowd at trax. as early as the end of the first set you can hear the entire crowd screaming "HALLOWEEN" at the top of there lungs. the band continues right on through the night without any hint to where the song might come in(though everyone knows that the encore is a good place for bets). so the encore finally comes around, people are still screaming for halloween song and dave says casually into the mike "me and carter are going to do our seasonal song now." halloween has been done without a bass line before with just as much energy, but dave and carter break into (one of the best versions i've ever heard)--- christmas song. personally i find christmas song to be as powerful a song as halloween, but a crowd as inebriated as trax was that night is sure to disagree. i thought it was funny, but decided that from then on the flood zone is definitely a better place to see the band, but i can't get that far without my own car. rick thompson stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu "work ourselves, fingers to the boneTop Permalink
i dig what you're saying about the trax crowd, this summer shows were an incrediable bother dealing with those drunk nonmellows, out to be trendy, tuck in the oxford, etc..don't care about music crowd... excuse the grammar and don't forget about those high schoolers (not that i didn't go in high school but whatever...) it's too bad the home home crowd is starting to piss off the band. also, not to offend those who tuck in their oxfords it's just that wahoos can certainly start to look the same...Top Permalink
Something must be done. Those of us north of NYC are itching to see the band, and down at Trax they're giving 'em a hard time. As whoever sent this last messages pointed out there have been a lot of messages coming through minarets.net. I can make this digestified if everyone thinks that would be better. Granted volume has bee high recently, but it's only been three days. There has been little of substance to come through and there is only so much of that, it should die down (don't tell the people on Phish.net). The Zollmann's show, as far as I know is open to everyone. It's the Halloween party which has always been open. There are rumores of it being closed, but I'm trying to find out what the deal really is. The show last June was closed because it was Senior Party and underclassmen had to pay $5 to get in. However, they played last January and it was open. Who's your father and what department is he in? Do you know Baner at all? Baner could get you in if you know him. had never heard of them until I saw them there. I do remember liking their sound, but I didn't rush out and buy all their music. Then I came down to school and one day saw a flier around campus that they would be playing at The Floodzone in downtown Richmond, VA. A asked a girl in my hall if she wanted to go with me and she flipped out. Evidently she has been listening to them ever since the beginning when they came out with their first album self titled, The Samples. She brought over a tape of their first album, b/c at the time they hadn't rereleased their first disk and it was really hard to get a hold of, so I listened to their the whole album and immediately couldn't wait to see their show. Now I know that they don't jam on any of their albums, except maybe Underwater People, but never the less their lyrics and sound is really good. say anything on the Horde-net about them? A I the only one out their who really likes their music? I was lucky enough to get a taped copy of the show at the Floodzone, from a guy here at U of R who knows the guy on good show, friendly with the crowd, and even managed to jam. Does anyone else out there agree or disagree? There must be a couple more Samples fans out there, I hope. the GSW tour dates, anyway I was psyched to see that God Street Wine IS coming to The Floodzone. When I got their August/September newsletter it said that they were tenatively playing in Richmond at the end of Sept. but then they moved the show to the D.C. area. I was bumbed, but now there is gonna be a show and I'm definitely gonna be there. Will anyone else out there in the greater Richmond, VA area join me? anyone else out there heard of them? I just went to a show on Tuesday night and it was incredible. If you've ever heard them play you know what I mean. If you haven't heard of them then I tell you what I know. There from some where in Virginia I think, because he does a lot of shows in the Richmond area. The lead singer is Dave, he has a black drummer, black saxaphonist, and a kick-ass guy on violin/fiddle who really got the place rocking. There's also a bass player, but he kinda stood on the side, didn't seem really into it. I I'm pretty sure that they're playing NYC on October 30. If your in the area definitely go see him. If anyone is really interested I can post his tour schedule for the rest of the month, but I don't have it with me right now. a killer weekend.Top Permalink

I'll tell you what I know. Or at least what I've heard. The Nov. 2 album contains both live and (I think) some studio material. Some of the live material is from this summer at The Muse in Nantucket. (Three songs I think) The Nov. 2 album will be on an independent label but their next album will be with a major/minor (?) label. Don't know when the second album is coming out. Sorry these answers are so vague but I don't want to say anything for sure because I heard all of this information second (third ?) hand, and not from Dave. I've found some mics that I really like, and am currently saving up the money to purchase them, but I've run into a small snag. Which capsule should I get with them. I'm looking at the AKG 460's cause I've really liked some shows I've taped with them, or gotten tapes of shows with. One is a dead show recorded with the short shotgun attachment. I can't afford this yet as the attachment is 299 a piece list. So I am then left looking at either the cartiod capsule, the hypercartiod capsule and the omni capsule which all seem to go for around the same price. These are the CK 61-3 capsules if that clarifies things. I recorded from the lawn at Stowe with a non shotgun attachment and the clarity and lack of crowd noise was unbelieveable. Much of my recoding would be from bars to theaters. Probably not arenas, no dead, and I don't forsee stadiums. So if ya got some opinions, I'll be happy to hear them, Any outstanding reason not to get the AKG's, any other accessories that I will need for portable recording? (besides a deck, I got one of those, Denon DTR 80p) Also a good place to get all of this stuff cheap would help. Thanks for any and all help. told that when I started attending Washington & Lee in Lexington, Va., DMB would be the biggest band around. Being from New Jersey, I had never heard of DMB, although my friend told me I would like them because she knew my musical taste. Now that I am at W&L, and have seen DMB a few times, I realize my friend was right. So what I'd like to do now is get a hold of some good sounding DMB shows to get an even better feel for the band and their music. I do have one really good tape where the first side is a mix of different songs recoreded live on DAT. The second side is just Dave and his guitar in the studio? playing some tunes. Again the sound on both sides is exellent. Besides that, I have about 100 hrs of Phish that I'd be willing to trade for DMB. So if anyone out thereis interested, drop me a line. Thanks for taking the time to read this. OH! Also, if you are going to be at Zolleman's in Lexington Va. on the 27th, let me know because I'll be there too! Thanks again.Top Permalink

Has anyone else noticed how much minarets has dyed down since its announcement last week? 8-) Do you think I should make another post to Horde.Net,Phish.Net,Fine-Wine,.. about minarets again or should I leave it be? Don't want to waste more bandwidth but want people to know it's here. By the way, Zollman's IS a private party but...........my brother said it probably not going to be that hard to get in if you are not part of the "private party" BTW, the "private party" consists of 4 W&L frats! My brother THINKS that you may still be able to get in for something like $5. Remeber this is just what my brother THINKS. He doesn't know for sure and I wouldn't drive a couple of hours on this assumption. Check it out first, I'm just relaying what I found out. alex CrothersTop Permalink
i've sent out the lyrics file, now, so if you've requested it and didn't get it, send another request, and i'll try to get it to you as soon as possible. as for the subject line, karen moon, i know you didn't get the message because your computer account won't accept internet mail right now. call your computer center and yell obscenities at them, then request it again. rick thompson stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu "the tv's on...to me this explains it."Top Permalink
Can anybody confirm or deny what I heard last night - Dave Matthews Band is opening for the Jerry Garcia Band on a few east coast shows in November. Any feedback would be appreciated -Dave dforbis@birch.ee.vt.eduTop Permalink
The Dave Mathews Band CD Release Party will be NOV 9, NOT NOV 2, as previously announced, according to Chris Bowman of TRAX. There will be a special guest opening on the 9th, but I forgot who. At midnight, there will be a special appearance/performance at Plan 9 Records in Charlottesville (on Main Street, about two blocks from TRAX) for the release, and, I presume, signings, meetings, etc. On Nov. 16, GOD STREET WINE will open for the Dave Mathews Band at TRAX, Charlottesville, VA. More Nov dates and other info on the way... -- Ellis * jeg5s@virginia.edu * POB 3240, Charlottesville,VA 22903 -- Graduate student, UVA Dept. of Sociology -- Administrator for rec.music.phish FAQ FileTop Permalink
Sorry for the crossposting, but the minarets.net is just getting going and there were over 200 requests for this tree. The tape tree for the Dave Mathews Band at the Bayou, with mucho fillers, closes at midnight tonight (mon, oct 25.) If your submission is not dated and timed by then, or if I get it substantially after that point, then it will be too late. The tree structure will posted on the horde.net (horde@world.std.com to post, horde-request@world.std.com to subscribe) and the minarets.net (minarets@moose.uvm.edu to post, listproc@moose.uvm.edu to subscribe). I will also try to forward a copy to everyone involved, though thats another hour or two of scripting. There are over 200 participants in the tree. There will not be a DAT branch. Various clusters of folks (esp. within Virginia) are going to dub among themselves, off the tree, so that the tree will comprise closer to 130 folks. The tapes are TWO tapes of 100 minutes, soundboard masters will fillers from soundboard masters. The sound grand!! -- Ellis * jeg5s@virginia.edu * POB 3240, Charlottesville,VA 22903 -- Graduate student, UVA Dept. of Sociology -- Administrator for rec.music.phish FAQ FileTop Permalink
