This song originated in 2012 as an intro to Why I Am with improvised lyrics. Dave again played it before Why I Am on June 1, 2013, but this time he sang from handwritten lyrics, and the official setlist page gave it the title of "Kill the Preacher." After the 7.6.13 show, DMB's official Facebook page began listing it as "Preacher Man" while the dmband.com setlist page continued to list it as "Kill the Preacher." It has yet to appear on any of the printed setlists.

Because the 2013 versions have mostly been Dave solo (with some minor accompaniment by Tim and Carter), playing the exact same guitar part as the 2012 versions, we are currently considering all performances to be the same song. However, because the 2012 versions were far more improvised and because the 2013 ones still seem to be works in progress, we are currently looking at the two years separately with regard to whether a performance is a tease, partial, or full. For 2012, we have labeled the relatively lengthy, full-band versions as "full" while calling the medium-length ones "partials" and the shortest ones "teases." For 2013 and on, a full version is one with two refrains, a verse, and a bridge.
