The song featured a 180 degree mood change to live shows and displayed a more serious and experimental band to the audience. It formed a frequent 1-2 combo with Minarets, but was eventually replaced in the combo by Typical Situation. After the fall of 1993 the song all but disappeared from sets, making brief comeback appearances on 2.25.95 and on the Dave and Tim tours of 1996 and 1997. After having been assumed dead, the song made a surprising comeback on the Fall 2000 Tour as a Dave solo feature. It made an even bigger comeback on the Spring 2009 Tour as a full-band feature, with more and more of the song being played each night before suddenly disappearing again. In July 2007, Stefan posted a thread on izstyle.com asking what song DMB fans missed the most. The overwhelming winner was Blue Water. He posted: "I loved the responses and am with you on Blue Water.... One of my all time favorites. The solo section bass line from that song was inspired from listening to Pink Floyd all the time when I was 18. The lyrics...beautifully dark...we were a young band when that song was written......Look what you all have done to me, I'm feeling a bit melancholy at the moment :-)Till Tour"For the purposes of distinguishing between full and partial versions of this song, we define a full version as one that contains the lyrics and a jam/solo section. Partial versions have typically omitted the jam/solo section. Teases generally end before the "take this my arms" verse. [NOTE: Previously, we defined a full version as having a return to the lyrics at the end; however, we discovered that not all of the song's original performances had this part, so we revised our criteria.]This song has been officially released twice with printed copyright information (Warehouse 8 Vol. 1 and Live Trax 20), and both instances give it a copyright date of 1990, which seems inaccurate. 05.05.92 live debut 85 Known Plays over 28 years 5,457 Days Since last fully played (07.09.11) 11:00:13 total song time Stats By Show Artist ArtistFirst ShowLast ShowAvg LengthPlay Count% Total Plays% Total ShowsDave Matthews Band5/5/19927/13/20198:417385.9%3.0%Dave Matthews9/11/19924/14/19963:1522.4%0.7%Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds2/9/19967/9/20112:58910.6%3.1%Dave Matthews, LeRoi Moore & Stefan Lessard8/18/19958/18/19952:5711.2%100.0% Plays By Year Slot Count By Year Song Length Over Time Slots and Types Opener1 (1.2%)Midset63 (74.1%)Set 1 Closer2 (2.4%)Closer5 (5.9%)Encore14 (16.5%)partial18tease9Longest Full Versions # LengthDateLocation116:203/23/1993Charlottesville, VA214:143/6/1993Lexington, VA313:533/3/1993Richmond, VA413:383/2/1993Charlottesville, VA513:053/17/1993Richmond, VA612:4412/22/1992Charlottesville, VA712:3912/9/1992Richmond, VA812:375/19/1993Richmond, VA912:302/26/1993Tuscaloosa, AL1012:284/10/1993Washington, DCShortest Full Versions # LengthDateLocation12:307/6/2010Canandaigua, NY22:354/14/1996Sweet Briar, VA32:354/24/2009Charlotte, NC42:547/9/2011Chicago, IL52:578/18/1995Tinley Park, ILLiberated 1 Time #Missing SinceDate LiberatedDays SinceShows Since12.25.954.24.0951721082More Liberations »Top Segues #Song Count1» Typical Situation102» Dancing Nancies33» All Along the Watchtower24» Maker, The15» Drunken Soldier16» Warehouse17» Lie in Our Graves18» Christmas Song19» Dreamed I Killed God110» JTR111» Two Step112» Minarets113» Jimi Thing1
