CURRENT STATE OF MINARETS

abs@student.umass.edu Fri Apr 28 14:46:33 1995

I have not posted here in quite a while(months) but i have been reading
and lurking in the shadows, and doing the tape thing..(thanks to everyone
for the great tapes...ohhh the bagbys...ohhh the dats///ohhh the joy)
anyhow...it seems to me the a 110 message digest is just way the hell to
much, espeically when most of the content is personal...so without trying
to piss anyone off(i am sure i will) use the net to post dave shit not...
personal shit to others...thats what your fucking personal addresseses
are for.

This net has changed so very much since i subscribed a few years ago.
the regulars have changed and so has the content...well it is not
possible to bring back the old tape offers(of crystal quality, I might ad)
and the super nice newbie offers or the frequently posted rare dave info....

but what we can do is grab the reigns and bring this net back to an
informative, interactive, site to talk about the dave matthews band and
trade tapes and meet fellow dave heads(i cant beleive i said that)

thats it...

save some space please

sdeck@cw.com Fri Apr 28 14:54:56 1995

A lot of us would really like to talk about shows, the band, the music.

We couldn't care less about how much lint is in your bellybutton, whether
you prefer chunky over smooth peanut butter or your little goo-goo
ramblings. Try typing them on a typewriter and staring with wonder at
what you've created but jesus, spare the rest of us please....

Everyone should have a penis in their hand!
First 4 people (2 undigestified and 2 digestified) to tell me why they want
a penis in their hand.....nahhhh.....that could get way out of hand (heheh)
and then I'd feel too much like a pervert, not that I don't already
but.....just email me....and you can get a copy of 9-11-92. For those
digestified don't forget to include the #!

it's an art.

THOMPSRC@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Fri Apr 28 15:52:28 1995

it's poetry. it's creativity. it's better than grovels. it's better
than flames. so if you don't like it, i'm gonna have to track you down
and look at you like you are weird.

why must there be obligatory dave content? this isn't the "dave
matthews net"... it's "minarets.net"

i wonder how many of you have actually seen a minaret (not including
the one made by gregory.) i haven't. but i'm sure i'd cherish
the moment. i'd love to scream from one. i bet the sound of a
well crafted barbaric yawp from teh top of a minaret would sound
incredible as it bounced across the arabian plateau.

there is a newsgroup. where you can sit back and watch boring
"comments" and "relative, useful information" get traded back
and forth like magic cards.

but why? why must you have "relative, useful shit" about damaba?
is it what will make you life complete? to know what color anne's
tongue was when she died? it makes no sense. obsessiveness.
it won't get you anywhere. so don't subscribe to minarets if you
just want to find out how to get a copy of this show or that.
no matter how many grovels you make, you prolly won't get a response.

don't "subscribe" to minarets. you subscribe to magazines. and
social movements. like facism. just hang out and open your eyes
and see the three corners. then walk around. it's a big room.
don't sit in the corner and hope to god your going to get lucky
enough to snag a copy of the show where peter says "boyd's got a
patch on his butt." listen to what you have. if you don't have
any, listen to the cd. wanna know how to get some? go tape another
band, and get addicted to them. it works. it's how i discovered
dave. dave isn't the end all be all of music, and to think that
he is will make minarets a stifling place. that's why we're here.
to open this shit wide up and have a hoedown. sorry to crash
your "i gotta know every goddam little personal shit reference i
can to dave matthews like how many times his name has been mentioned
in any magazines with a circulation of over 500,000" study break.

we're gonna drink some minarets.koochi and wait for the next time
dave comes to our towns. for now, though, let's just have
some fun........

My sophomore year in high school there was a float made of like a hugeantic
(great word, by me) cookie monster that was like 40 feet tall and it took
cookis from the cookie jar and it was coolas shit but they cheated with
motors and stuff and didn't win the contest.

BTW, Ernie comes in a close second tied with Oscar.

I'm sorry, but a few years??? Come on now, If you all think you know how
the net used to be then you'd be pretty psyched to see what's happening
now! This IS the way the net used to be, and these ARE the people who
used to be on it. You have a delete key, use it. Right when things were
getting happy too. I've never posted a flame, nor will I refer to this
as one. It's spring, relax, brush the snow off your shoulders and
smile. Make friends. There are few inside jokes on this net. There are
random ramblings, yes. But, I also saw a bunch of replies from new
people who had something to say, or maybe, just maybe found something

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH hah!---that was a laugh.
Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries! Hah...I
fart in your general direction!

Hey there everybody -
I wrote a post a while ago where I said I was looking for cerain songs -
thanks to many of you I was able to get most of them.

Redemption Song
Exodus
Tangerine
Sympathy for the Devil (I read in an earlier post that this is just a
cover that someone thought DMB should do - but I thought they already did it)

and I'm always looking for any versions of So Much To Say!
I have about 30 HQ hours to trade for - so mail me if you are interested.
thanks,

nothing much, really

kadams@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Fri Apr 28 16:50:02 1995

OK, here's a plan...a truce so to speak...
You guys don't like our random ramblings, and you wnat to hear more Dave
stuff (ie setlists, offers, etc.)
I could care less about setlists, offers, cause I already got all my
little heart wants, and well, I'd rather talk about how the abnd played
rather than what songs they played.
But, to each his own. I delete trade offers and setlists, and you can
undigestified mail makes for easier deleting (if you have the space)

When it seems like there's no Dave content being spoken, well, there is.
Dave Matthews Band Now we are friends, but do not see each other as much
as we may want (now that the band's out and about), but we can still talk
here.

No worries. Graduation June 1. I'll be off this thing for good. Enjoy.

Houston Show

CGL5671@ACS.TAMU.EDU Fri Apr 28 17:07:59 1995

Hey Guys,

Balroom.

Setlist Houston 04-27-95

Warehouse
Satellite
Billies (Boyd almost fell down...It was pretty funny)
Best
Jimi Thang
Recently
Drive In, Drive Out (really cool...added some jammin parts to it... I felt like
Typical Situation ( good except of all things Crowd surfers )
Rhyme & Reason
WWYS ( crowd went nuts)
Ants (I think we will see this combo from now on.)

Encores
Back You Up
The new song
Watchtower

Dave was the final act and he easily put on the best and longest show (about 2
hrs). As Dave said, "Its FUCKIN hot in here." The crowd was not bad except
for the individuals that thought it would be fun to surf. It seemed like they
knew most of the songs including RTT stuff. Alot has changed in five months
since they came in December. I think the club days are over.

BHTM was okay. You think they could play songs that aren't in the keys of C or
G. I mean it was getting extremely ridiculous. But anyway, at first I thought
the crowd was going to be pro-BHTM but once dave started you could see that
there were more DMB fans. They just all of a sudden came out of the woodwork.
It was real fun but extremely hot but I think almost everyone had a pretty good
time. I was expected them to play less but I think they started to have a good
time so they played longer.

Later,
Cliff

PS Clare, just keep on talkin!!!

Last of the big scary projects is done!! And When I finished presenting
last night, I went and we swung on the swings and jumped off from way up
high and twisted the chains around and let ourselves spiral ..... We're
gonna do a study on pre and post stress swinging... have a theory that
its immensley helpful both times!

And then this morning I got to teach... and one of the two year olds had
on an Elmo t-shirt (elmo is the best. but animal is way up there
y'all.) And we played in the sand and hid under boxes and played disc.
cool fun happy in the sunshine.

That's what I want for all of you, to be happy in the sunshine. I
know. Minarets like we know and love.........

 hair is wierd
you can grow it again, but it's so hard to get
 it cut off.

Yeppers. Try getting over a foot cut off at once. like gravity doesn't
affect you for a while you feel so light. I still wake up sometimes in
the morning and wonder what happened to it all.
Wow.

I don't even feel like I have finals coming up. They're jes gonna be
cake. Like fudgy vegan chocolate cake. I think I'll cut outa work here
early and go home and bake some.

i'm also court jester, and don't you forget it.

When I was a freshman in college, my friends and I would always launch
"I'm the court jester"
"No, you're the trickster, I'm the court jester"
"no, you're the trickster" etc. etc. etc.

I would always end up saying I liked the sound of being the trickster, so
we'd finally stop.

No idea how that originated.

There was no DMB then, so I can't relate it to them.....
So they called me the trickster for a while, befor ethe switched to "weasel"
How did I get all these weird nicknames?? Glad people call me something
normal finally...

Mo' Dave sightings y Sesame Street

murmur@grove.ufl.EDU Fri Apr 28 17:55:01 1995

in a friends dorm room, didn't feel like staring at the ceiling), and
WWYS was #6. Also, heard on the radio a intro on the band on how they
came from South Africa and West Virginia. Gave me a hearty laugh.
Super Grover) and those alien things with huge mouths that would see some
object and repeat what its called over and over again and then say, "YEP
YEP YEP YEP YEP YEP YEP YEP YEP YEP YEP" more quickly. Hell, they beat
Grover. They are cool.

I guess I'm a hypocrite for saying the same thing but IT MUST BE SAID!!!
Stop wasting minerets space with ramblings that have no relation to DMB.
This is getting out of hand.

New Standard Rule

I don't know if this is an original idea or not, but I'd like to subject the
following rule to the "Standards of Tape Trading":
Send the padded mailer inside of a regular envelope. Address only the
outside envelope. Don't seal the mailer. That way we'll all spend less
money on mailers. Comments?

Tuesday, May 9 at 9 PM. The frequency is 90.7, and you can call the listener

i too have been to a minaret and there was cheese and maggots aplenty

JPETERS@CENTER.COLGATE.EDU Fri Apr 28 19:28:33 1995

rick, ricky-tiki-tavi was wondering if any of us had been to the minarets

i've sorta been to one.

when i was in spain three years ago we visited an old cathedral in Sevilla

the cathedral is catholic, being in spain, but it was originally a mosque built
when the moors were hanging out in spain and pissing off the "good" christain
folk of espana. so anyway, when ferdinan and isabella kicked the moors out,
they converted the mosque into a cathedral. so the minaret got turned into a
bell tower which they call "la giralda" which means the spinner becuase there's
a weather vane thing at the top which is in teh shape of a woman and it spins
in the wind. it's actually sad to see where the beautiful moorish architecture
stops two stories up to be replaced by the christian tower. i climbed to the
top and climbed up on a safety rail and rang one of the bells...it was loud as
shit and i nearly pooped. i din't scream from it, but i'm going back to madrid
in the fall for a semester and i'm gonna go to sevilla to see kysa and we'll
scream from the minaret for everyone here. i can't wait!

don't go to mass anymore. i'll end this sensitively and add that i don't mean
to insult any catholics or anything like that. it just makes me wonder what
the hell they were thinking.....it was so beautiful.

fuck that....

THOMPSRC@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Fri Apr 28 20:55:21 1995

I don't know if this is an original idea or not, but I'd like to subject the
following rule to the "Standards of Tape Trading":
Send the padded mailer inside of a regular envelope. Address only the
outside envelope. Don't seal the mailer. That way we'll all spend less
money on mailers. Comments?

let's try this....

instead of wasting the paper of an extra envelope, just use one padded
mailer. include an index card with your address, and then when the
tapes are finished, all the taper has to do is affix alittle scotch
tape here, affix alittle scotch tape there, swipe off the old stamps,
swipe on some new stamps, and send the buckaroo on back.

sort of like my one padded envelope that started at teh damaba home office
with a copy of r2t, came to me, went back to the damaba home office, then
back to me, then to lionel, than back to me, then off to some place like
new orleans or something. i haven't seen it since then, so there's no
telling where it went.

reduce, reuse, recycle.

Nothing usefull to say...

messierb@ucsub.colorado.edu Fri Apr 28 20:59:10 1995

I had a dream last night. I figured out how Dave can sell out all he
wants and still make us happy. It has to do with the Grateful Dead.
Dave goes to Vegas and opens his own place. Call it Dave's place or
soemthing cool like that. Dave and the boys build a theater for ohh 1500
and they get to set it up JUST how THEY want it. Then they can play.
But they don't have to play everyday anymore, just when they want to.
And I get to sell all the tickets. Oh, MTV gets all the rights to the
videos that are recorded of everyshow, bue WE get the tapes. I have
never seen a real maggot, but once I was eating pasta and was positive
that it had turned into maggots. I still ate it and it tasted good. Is
there a better way to waste your day? My paper is not done, but this is
more fun. Hope whatever it is they got is spreading.

BOWA Tape Tree

tape tree. After today (Friday) I cannot accept any more requests to join,
'cuz I have to get this tree organized. Thanks to all who wrote me
personally and made some really great suggestions for the tape, I think
everyone will enjoy it. If you are a newbie, and are unsure of how trees
work, no fear, just join and I'll set up you. Basically all I need from
you have, if you have any DMB tapes (to trade with your parent -- this
is absolutely not necessary but just good for me to know), and what state
you live in. Yep, I think that's about it. But please, today is the last
day I can continue to accept requests. I'll try to have everything ready
next week.

Talk to you all later,

New and old friends...

axvann@minerva.cis.yale.edu Fri Apr 28 22:58:27 1995

Lately there's been a few complaints about the "new" subscribers to our
little group. I can safely say that few on this net have been here as
long as I (consecutively, that is), so I figured I'd offer a little
advice/meaningless rambling.

1. Clare, Rick, Jeff, Ben and Kevin are not taking over your net. They
are taking over their net. They essentially created it, or at least
nurtured it, with thanks to Alex, so just because
it turned into something different in their absense in no reason to get
all upset. If you want to unsubscribe, go ahead. But don't complain to
everyone before you do it.

2. This is not meant to be a source for ticket info, tape trading and
setlists only. That is why the first DMB newsletter to refer to Minarets
called it "food for the mind" or some such thing, not just a source for
info. If the band likes it a certain way, who are you to say it should be
different.

3. There have been a huge # of messages lately. But I suppose its just
our old friends expressing their excitement at being back on the net. I
must ask, however, that they keep in mind that there are many new members
of minarets who send messages as well, so perhaps they should limit their
postings somewhat. The joy of seeing a message from clare or a memo from
the cellar in the inbox is reduced somewhat when there are 7 such messages a
day.

OK? Good. Group spoon......

much better.

First person to write a personal message to me telling me # of times Bob
Marley says Jammin' in the song of the same title gets a copy of the show
of their choice for blanks and postage. It's a favor for my brother- he's
got a bet with someone to find the song with the title repeated the most
times.

Goin' to Myrtle- see all you Blue Devils there,

clare said that . . .
minarets.net has only been around since december 93. to me, i don't
think we can milk 16 months to be called "a few years," and for the
first few months, the only people i could be sure of are the freaks
who are freaking you out right now.
 *end rick quote*

rick. honey.. you knwo ilove you tons..
 but you are WRONG!#$%

i've been on minarets since at least september or october of '93
not december.. there were only about ten of us..
greenfling gnomeboy.. remember him? ang gregg and you and me. and tanen..
were you here yetfr_.tanen? and hm.. budke and it hink rob hold
atrhodes.. but it was just about 9 of us OH!@@$%% DON"T FORGET OURLEADER@!!!
 DR.FRANKENSTIN CROTHERS!!!

First of all . . . YEAH!

We're back y'all! Thanks for the recent kind words Adam, it's nice to be
back.

Anyway Clare, since you bring it up, Minarets was started on October 13,
1993. The first several posts were from Alex and Eric Budke, both of whom
were trying to get their feet wet on Listproc at the time.

Date of first post (selected people who might be curious):
Ellis 10/15/93
Nebulous 10/16
Brett 10/16
Rick 10/18
Me! 10/18
Shawn Peters 10/18
Gnome Boy 10/18
Sue Deutsch 10/18
Gregg 10/18
Darren Cokin 10/18
Dave Forbis 10/18
Reid Spice 10/19
Clare 11/30

October 18th was a very busy day on the net. So busy that people were
talking of maybe unsubbing and maybe digestifying.

Point? Get used to the fact that we're a talkative bunch. Write-a-tive,
maybe. Is that a word?

Now it is. It means "tending to write verbosely." See below!

Anyway, Adam went a little far in saying that this is our net (already
deleted his message so I forget exactly what he said) but the fact
remains that as you can see from the above very brief list at least some
of us were there from the very start.

Why should you care?

Well, maybe you shouldn't. But I'll tell you this (and you can hear it
from Rick and Clare and Keith and Neb and Jeff and Kev and Beth if you'd
prefer): We DO feel a certain attachment to Minarets, having been around
these parts for a while. It's like that Living Colour song . . . well you
can tear a mailing list down (which some might claim some of you have done
or tried to do) but you can't erase a memory. Get it? What I'm saying is
that we're here to give a dose of reality. This is what it used to be
stuff too.

There were no flames at first. [gasp!] That's right. Can a DAY go by
with out some of that shit now? No it can't. Why? DON'T ANSWER THAT
question 'cuz there just ain't NO reason why we can't have a flameless day.

Be nice.
Keep the stupid shit to yourself.
Find the good things in every post.

Show respect and love for everyone else out there. When this net started
people were helpful, friendly, and most of all cared about what they said
to each other.

Those characters whose stuff you've been reading have been doing their
best to set that kind of example again.

Are there personal messages? Well, yes but that's because we all used to
be friends around these parts.

Sigh . . .

 cancer.

band.

but blue water babboon farm has nto been played since.. i think.. march
 of '93

someone said it earlier . . . trincoll 931113.

thank you luv that was very well said.
you too adam.

you're both right y'know....about no one
owning minarets
'cause its such a nebulous (that's for you benny :) )
entity..........
i guess dr. frankenalex crothers comes closest
but that's just because
he has THE POWER.
but all of our frolicking of late came about not because
we think we have some claim over the 1000-plus folk
on minarets......
....but because we all at one point really loved it.
yes....
this is most certainly a viable forum for
stuff like setlists and trades and the most trivial of dave trivia.....
but
many many folk have hung around these parts loooong
past the time when most of that stuff was interesting......
or new
or necessary.
.....remember 3rd street??? (hee hee like the alamo keith!)
that's why people stick around....
hell.....i flew from texas to virginia....
and keith and bridget survived a two-day trek
in a borrowed car....
and some came from new jersey and florida (right?) and
almost boston and vermont........
simply because dave was playing down the block
and we wanted to experience it with our FRIENDS.

and it was special.
and this had a point.
i know it did somewhere.

ha!

everybody go hear

newcomer tape offer

THaughton@aol.com Sat Apr 29 02:28:38 1995

it seems to me that there is some confusion here about great traders.
i'm sure beth and the other person mentioned are great traders, but the
reason isn't because they included extra tapes with their trades.
tweaking one's decks for head azimuth, record eq, bias, and shit like that
regularly does, as does getting tapes out to folks on schedule, passing on
whatever taping wisdom i've gained over the years, and doing tape offers to
newcomers, something i haven't done in a couple months(i was w/o dmb tapes

jen fogelson and dash kick ass -- they are the queens of the net

will flame the hell out of you. it is okay for certain people to write
each other personal messages, but most of us can't. the rules of the net
are made to be broken by the old timers, you can't crack the inner
minarets circle. don't ever disagree with the net gods, for they will
retake the net, as you have all witnessed. beware of them-- they will
goon you if they have the chance. i believe mr. vann said it was "their
net because they created it".

just delete it and move on with your life. don't flame them, just read
the shit you want to read. everyone has a right to write what they want
and when they want, so please respect others opinions. if getting a huge
digest annoys you, then read the newsgroups. minarets net should be more
than setlists and tape trading, it should be a family of dedicated fans
of a fantastic band. use your delete key freely if you don't like the
direction the net is heading. but if you are not an insider, stay
within your bounds - don't step out of line.

and then listen to dave some more, and everything will be fine.

sooooooo,
after eight fun months, i leave the net
thanks for all the good times, and hearty laughs i got from the flames.
i am sure "shovel head" will miss me, but perhaps in another time and

olive branch to you.

i am outta here
i am unsubbing, let the celebrations begin, nebulous and keith and shaft

Re: I'M GETTING INUNDATED WITH MAIL FROM MYSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nebulous@panix.com Sat Apr 29 03:45:39 1995

too. in fact, he's kookier than minarets has become, so DEAL WITH IT!!!!

WOW, YOU have met dave matthews. I have met him ten times over and yes
he is a bit weird, but not as weird is this minarets has become. I do
not know but do you people have any pubic hair. I think that the Romper
Room has just opened up their own mailing list---please join. DMB is a
band (did you know that) it would be nice to get at least one message a
day with some relevant information rather than some ridiculous inside
jokes that are very pointless to 90% of the people on this list. See how
tall you are and jump in the middle of the river!

dave matthews has unwittingly sold his soul and
billy pilgrim has come unstuck in time.

you're welcome.

way back in virginia way back in my.....

hfejp@utxdp.dp.utexas.edu Sat Apr 29 04:22:13 1995

It'd be a nice gesture of the old- timers to make a newbie offer of their
own :)

----------

geez adam...way to steal my thunder! :)
i was gettin' around to this
...i was i was....

so...yeah...ok.
a newbie offer.........
i can do that.

lets play name that tune........
if you have no tapes and you can complete the
lyric running circles 'round my brain
(hint...hint....see the sub line silly)
AND
if you can tell me why the person who sings it is cool......
then you can have the cream of my crop
so to speak.
i mean....ummm....your pick...2 shows from me.
yeah.

i'll take a few digestified and a few not.
tell me the digest number and all that jazz blah blah blah
but be quick!
go! go go!
(and be sensible....basically if you're not just sittin' at your
computer and this thing pops up...if you...like check your
mail and this has been sittin' in your inbox......
please don't flood me box......)

y'know.....i have had virginia on my mind....
i guess 'cause brett's grad-y-ating and he must have
rung the wren bell today......
and 'cause really dave matthews just isn't the same outside
the state......
and 'cause nags head nc is about to be flooded with virginia
college students and the tulips have probably just
finished blooming and van ripers was last week and
too many of my college friends are getting married.

.....but sometimes i like texas too. :)

gee.....i wonder how many people deleted this message
because it didn't say "newbie offer" in the sub....hmmmmm.....

and believe me eric.....i haven't forgotten about you!
i splished and splashed in a bubble bath tonight
....come up through my toes to my ankles and all that.....
and you know what that does to me...............

well....shit. i'd
better send this and spread some
love around........ay?

Re: GREAT TRADER-TOM HAUGHTON

spc@acpub.duke.edu Sat Apr 29 04:54:21 1995

i just have to second this opinion. tom has hooked me up with incredible
sounding copies of the roseland and new year's shows and is really
dedicated to preserving sound quality and acuracy of the music. he's even
met me here at school when he was on his way to work so that i wouldn't
have to deal with postage or waiting long. anything tom trades or offers
you will definitely top your list of shows in terms of tape quality. if
anyone has any questions about taping and how to keep the sound as true
as possible, either in dubbing or recording live shows, he's the one to
ask. many thanks tom. later y'all.

It is unpatriotic to say that anyone but Sam Eagle is the coolest
Muppet. I dig him mucho and I'm not your Dad. Dr. Bunsen Honeydew is
also way funny.

Post what you like. You guys are fuuuuuny.

Anyone have any boots of Spywagon? Brett sent me a song by them as
filler on a dave tape and I'm itchin' to hear more.

performing African folktales on Sesame Street fri.may5th. Their names
are Mike and Maduka. I've seen them do this act before and it's a good
time. Check local listings . . . . .

Anixiously awaiting a videotape of Phish halloween '94. See you all at

The Muppets thing and stuff

briggdl9@wfu.edu Sat Apr 29 10:02:23 1995

I just finished a paper and wanted to throw in my .02 about the Muppets.
The Muppet Show is still one of my favorite shows. It sucks that it

Animal kicks Ass.
The funniest people on the show are the old dudes in the balcony.
Hecklers are pretty cool. I can't remember there names right now,
probably because it is 6 am and I have been working on this damn paper
for 8 straight hours.

Thanks to whoever started the muppet trend because reminescing about all
of that stuff is really relaxing. You know, Sesame Street, Electric
Company and all of the other childhood shows. Any Ultraman fans? I used
to love that too.

OBDC-How can anyone get tired of Dave? I don't understand it, but I get
shit from my suitemates for playing too much Dave?? Yeah right, like it
is possible to hear to much Dave, especially from bagbys. Whatever.

Since, I owe much of my collection to this net, I though I would post by
first NEWBIE OFFER. The first person to correctly this quote from my
favorite movie,(actor and character)

"It looks like a mirac, it's in the hole, it's in the hole. The crowd
going wild at Augusta......"

Later.
