OK whats goin on. Is the Willmington show really canceled? or is it going to be on the 16th. me and some friends are driving up from Athens Georgia and really need the facts. I would actually it rather be moved to Sunday(Easter) cause I saw them last Easter in Richmond. 2 Easters in a row, what could be better? Thanks for any info. and see Y'all in Willmington, can't wait I haven't been to a show since 12-30-94 in DC. thanks again Ryan rtoole@music.cc.uga.eduTop Permalink
Well here's a more civil response from "Human Numan". Please tell me how this man has so much time on his hands that he can reply to all of our letters! Anyway..... ***** I need to get in touch with the guy from California (I think Davis, CA) who sent me blank tapes. If you see this please e-mail me and tell me which tapes you want me to make for you. (You didn't leave a note in your envelope.) Thanks! Hi Kim, I read your letter...we're not taking credit for anything. We are one of the only radio stations in New York playing Dave Matthews, and for that you should be thanking us. We are giving them the exposure they so long desired. they would just plug in to a toaster & play for 2 people, instead of releasing an album to a record label and selecting a cut for RADIO (that's us), and releasing it as a single to thrust album sales. It's all methodical...and sorry to break this to you, but the Dave Matthews Band is part of this big machine. Believe me, they're not complaining... Why? things...if you disagree, send them a letter requesting an account for all of their money, i'll bet they're not giving it away to stay the way they are. And Z100 is an end to that means. We give them HUGE exposure, they get rich, we get ratings, which gets advertisers, end of story. One last thing...why are we suddenly "onto" the Dave Matthews Band? Because the key to success (=money) is timing. And the time was right for all parties involved. Midday DJTop Permalink
I would be willing to bet, although I don't know, that Dave really doesn't choose everything his band does anymore (like promotions, singles, etc...) regard for music or anything for that matter. any comments? anyone know who REALLY runs the show? peace AndrewTop Permalink

Hey everyone? How's it going? Well, this is kind of in response to Jeff's (Clogboy@aol.com) post. Don't you think that it would be cool if DMB did some sort of show for PBS? What do you think? Hmm...maybe Dave and the boys could go on Sesame Street. ...Big Bird, Dave, and all the little kiddies... Dave would sit on those big cement steps with his guitar, as all of the little kiddies watch in awe. It was just a thought. Elmo rules! "Because I love trash!" "C is for cookie." Hey, did any of you catch the show last night sponsored by that pathetic Z100 radio station? I heard it was a hot setlist. A friend of mine went and said it was increadible. They played So Much to Say(!) and two new songs. Wow! wanted to get some other opinions of the show. Also, one last thing. I am looking all over for a GOOD copy of the Dave show from 12/8/93 at FZ, both sets. I was given the tapes of it but they were very poorly done and I am looking for a good copy of it. It's an amazing show, their last regular wednesday show at the FZ. Well, thanks a lot. Take it easy John johnc28778@aol.comTop Permalink

i just got back from the video shoot for "ants marching". it was pretty cool. i heard that song about 30 times....the director was this clark gable look-a- like guy with a bad attitude. he kept telling us not to do "that dance thing" but instead to "just mill around". as if we were ants or something? dave and the band were really cool about everything though. they were laughing at the director with me & my friends. stefan was more trashed than anyone by far and the whole band was really cool about giving autographs. i actually got to stand where dave stood when he sang. they needed someone about dave's height while the band was resting to stand in his spot to adjust the cameras for different angles and stuff, so this really anal dirctor comes up to me and tells me to go to the other side of pier 64 and stand on this X on the ground right in front of the microphone and pretend as if i were singing. then he took me around to meet the whole band, who gave me all autographs and were mock thanking me in front of the director and then made fun of him as soon as he left. there i was--making fun of the ants marching video director with the whole DMB!! i couldn't even make it to the concert last night. i just showed up today and met the band, possibly even got myself into a video. there were only about 120 people there and we all tried to do what the director said, but he wouldn't let us have fun or dance while DMB played; he just wanted us to converse with one another and mill around in the back of this warehouse on pier 64. it was pretty random, but probably the only time i'll ever meet the band. jim **"take it away, but take it at your own speed"--BT**Top Permalink

Well, as most of you guys have already heard, the show at the Academy was incredible. So I won't bore you with things you've already heard. ed to tape the show. He told me that they were recording the show tonight to be on a future album, and that taping probably won't be allowed for a while. about the new album, and he didn't really say much about it. I guess it won't be out for a while. He did say that someone was cataloguing all of Dave Matthews' songs on equipment with seperate tracks. I talked to him for a little while, and he was a real cool guy. I asked him if he had replaced Bagby, and I was surprised as hell when he said, "I am Bagby!" I saw that he had a tape of the show, but then he gave it to another guy. Before I could talk to that guy, I was kicked out of the theater by some bitchy lady. I guess it's only her job, but those people annoy the shit out of me. couldn't get their hands on this whole show. It's just not the same without Davespeak. If anyone knows how I could contact Bagby, could you please let me know? He said he used to have an E-mail account but it became impossible to check while he was on tour. Or if anyone has access to a copy of this show, please, please, let's set up a trade. I am dying to get a copy, and my life will not be complete until I have one. Mark.Top Permalink

First of all, I never clarified this from the beginning, our station's email address is kind of an orphan task, that noone really want's to take care of sometimes. hi. i hate z100 as much as the next person, but mailbombing them is not a cool idea. i hate to piss on all of your rage (and maybe mine) but the fact of the matter is that mailbombing will only harm the sites that the mail has to travel through. for those unfamiliar with net topo, it boils down (real simply) to everything goes everywhere, and mailbombing only brings down others. however, an alternative exists, which is even more fun. you could try fax bombing them. best part??? Hey All, send this one. Sorry I didn't include my message to him, but it basically said that I wanted them to just play the music and lay off the hype. I figured that the band got where it was by people spreading the word that the music rocked and it should continue that way. No Z100 hype, no MTV hype, etc. I know that this stuff will go on, but I said that I didn't care because no Dave-come-lately DJ's say anything on my bagbys, and I'll bet that they don't talk on yours! Give it a try sometime. Instead of listening to the radio and catching a studio WWYS, listen to a cool bagby and listen to it live (I love the live version of WWYS) as well as all the other incredible jams by the boys. Why put up with all the shit when you can just enjoy DMB as it was meant to be heard -- as dictated by the band. of returning flames? I don't know. Talk to you all later on... PS- I have an interview today (Friday 4/7/95) for a programmer position with America Online. Maybe I can straighten the thing up a little for everyone on it! --------------------- Jeff, Thanks for the note, it's a relief to see someone who is strictly listening to the music, and not concerned with all the peripheral shit. That's what really counts in the end doesn't it? I should hope that the band has a lot of fans like you! HumanTop Permalink
Hey all, few substantial questions/comments to post... -- There have been a few speculations about what the next single's going to be... I was at the local record store and in their computer, "Jimi Thing" was the only single listed. There was no release date, and the people at the store knew nothing, but it looked pretty official... -- Nice to see that our friend Human Neuman decided that having 800+ potential listeners pissed off and armed with phones and computers was not a smart career move... Minaretters... can you imagine it? no crowd surfing, moshing, or any of that crap, just a lot of people who totally (or most of the people) appreciate the music... ahhh, well, we all have dreams! this summer? They sure as hell need some time off, but I can't wait for them to come back east! XLIIs? Mine are perpetually falling off, and i figured someone out there's got to know... of your Lafayette tapes -- they're going out tomorrow -- and they're first gen (I forgot to tell you). -- OK, even though I myself am just out of newbie ranks, if you've gotten this far and you have no tapes yet, I'll spin copies of that very sweet (thanks to Erik Tiekden) Lafayette 2/25/94 show for the first five legit newbies who send me a bit about how they got into DMB, their first concert, etc. Well, hopefully there's no flammable material in here, but if there is, just let me know -- nicely! -- so I can fix it. Oh, and if anyone knows what's going on with the newsgroup (i.e. what the hell are they posting?) and you have some spare time, let me know -- I still can't access it! Hey Now - Ok , according to the DaMaBa hotline they ARE opening for the DEAD in Las Vegas May 19-21! Las Vegas has been home to some hot Dead shows over the past few years and this could top them all. Just imagine... enjoy some pre-show festivities. Then 7:00 rolls around and you get to go and see DAve and the Boys ripe it up. This is something that we all look foward to in itself. After a show there is always a feeling of, "I wish it werent over",.... but wait you still get to see the Dead!!!! What a night, I can see it now the Dead put on a killer show, then deep into the 2nd set during space Dave walks out, then LeRoi, then Bobby & Dave alternate lead vocals and Jerry rips a fat solo, followed by Boyd& LeRoi. How about both bands for a Hard to Handle encore, I could see it, it would Wow, can you imagine.... (ARe you still reading??) By the way, how many Minaretters are really into the Dead too??, just curious. I have to figure out a way to get to Vegas, I have to. ;) Viva Las Vegas- Beau P.S.About z100, I think that this should be brought to the attention of Bama Rags, and hopefully the band. In case you still think it is a rumor....David Gans (host of the Grateful Dead Hour) got a confirmation of this from Steve Marcus (Grateful Dead Ticket Sales director) that the Dave Matthews Band will open for the Grateful Dead in Las Vegas in May. Now this will undoubtably scare the living shit out of Dave Matthews. I mean this will really scare them. I know that Dave has said at a few shows (with large crowds) that he is not saying much because they are a little "scared" of playing in front of so many people. The Silver Bowl holds like 40-50K people, although there may only be about 20,000 in the stadium when they play. Still this will be their first STADIUM show, and it will be very interesting to see how they respond. I REALLY DOUBT that they will actually play with the Grateful Dead. I've read many interviews and articles about the Dead and those who have played with them. The overriding comment is that it is very nerve wrecking to play with the Dead because they are so tight together. Even musicians like Carlos Santana and others find it a little scary to be up there with such power and energy on the stage. It is no small matter to stand up there, fit in, find a niche, and play with 6 other people and a band that has been playing for 30 years. Some musicians do better at it than others, like Branford Marsailis and David Murry, but most would not find such an agressive challenge very fun at all. Given that many of their other openning acts have not played with them, I don't think that Dave Matthews or any of the other members will play with them. Neither Sting nor Traffic played with them on stage during their performance. What we can hope for at best, IMHO, is that Jerry or one of the other members will join the Dave Matthews Band for a couple of their songs. Maybe Watchtower as a cover they both do, or another song that they could fit in with. I hope that I am wrong, because I would love to see them play together. As a highly educated opinion, I would not get my hopes up for Dave sitting in with the Dead in Vegas. Peace! Well, I just got back from a two day excursion with my brother. As posted before, the Academy show kicked ASS!!! THis was the first time the band had ever done anything like this together. It was cool too, because after waiting about an hour and a half in the FREEZING cold they finally opened the doors and we got front row. I didn't mind sitting at all, the band was so close. It was also cool because before the show, anyone(Yes anyone) waiting outside was given a ticket by Mike (the road manager?)...The setlist was amazing, and the general atmosphere was cool. Now onto the Video shoot for Ants...5 HOURS! It was really cool though. I really don't know how it will turn out. Anyway, the band was cool about signing and just chillin with the 100 or so fans who were there (By the end the number of us dwindled down to 20-30 of us). Anyway, I talked with the A&R guy for RCA who signed Dave (Bruce something). He was surprisingly cool. Dave seemed to get along well with him. Anyway, he said that the band will be going back into the studio in September to record their new album. He also said that they are taping every show to get together a live EP (like recently) out by the end of the fall. He said they wanted to not release it nation-wide (maybe just to fans or whatever) The new album should be out in December or January. I was also talking to Dave about what song they were in Our Graves...Cry Freedom...Get in Line. He and Carter also said that they were working on a lot of new stuff, like the new song that they played at the Academy (Great song!) Carter said that it didn't have a name yet...How cool are the guys. They are so nice, and that Human Numan asshole can shove that capitalist bullshit up his ass. there is no way that Daves main concern is money...Anyway, i hate to get vulgar, but some of that dick's responses were un called for. The real reason they played for Z100 (straight from the RCA guy's mouth) was because Z100 begged Dave and the boys to play a show with the CCranberries and Live in about Two weeks. Dave didnt want this because they would be only allowed to play for a half hour or whatever, and they set up this acoustic thing. That is what the real reasoning behind it was. Anyway, I digress................ ps- Dave was just singing some Frank Zappa while he was signing stuff..It was cool as hell............Top Permalink
Numan and send it to Red Light Management via their internet consultant. Wouldn't it be nice for this DJ, who thinks we're a small group, to get a big ass-whipping from his station manager? His job is to play tunes, not to insult his listeners or anyone, for that matter, in the name of Z100. Laugh I'm not gonna say 'no', but I won't say 'yes', either! If anyone has booking info for the DMB please send it to me- I'd like to try and book them now for my school before they go out of our price range. Also, I must say that I am glad that the next single is Ants. I know sometimes we rant and rave about Ants, but there has never been a situation where Ants hasn't put me in an amazing mood.Top Permalink

We all like to be important. It makes sense (but you can't beat sense into humans) to make everyone feel important if it makes everyone feel better. Just my feelings, but it seems more gets done this way... Maybe we'd have a bigger effect getting what we want with Z100 if we did something besides mail/fax/phone bomb them. Bottom line WWYS is being played A LOT. I thought you all might be interested. As far as hearing DMB in retail stores, I work in a Blockbuster Music Store and we play UTTAD constantly. When my boss is not there I play R2T and Recently (except for Halloween since he says FUCK) we are only suposed to play 'new' stuff. We have also had numerous sales on UTTAD chainwide, over 500 stores, and have featured it on our Sound Check (a listening area for new artist. Later, GaryTop Permalink
we have all heard the rumors, some keep spreading the rumors. until it affects the music, it is none of our concern. until you hear it from his mouth, it is all hersay. period. i hate to beat a dead horse, but these sort of rumors are boring to read. push on through and find something else to occupy your time, try origami. staceyTop Permalink
hello all- well, i am still up. iam having to type quietly because my roommate is asleep so pretnd iam whispering or some shit like that. youknow that giddy stage you hit after you've been up for almost twenty hours..............well ima there. i can't sleep. fucking insomnia. well, i have been thinking about this net alot lately and how its changed since i have been on here and stuff. i have only been here 7-8 months i think, but it sure has changed. i don't know if for better or worse. just change. you know like the change in your pocket? that kinda change. each to you reach in you pull something different out. each time i turn on the computer i get something different. like each time i listen to dave i get something different out of it, especially seek up. that song fucking rocks. each time i here that song chills go throughout my body. nothing else speaks to me quite that way. i just got the roseland show from february today or yesterday......recently. anyway, the first song is seek up and i was listening and it just hit me differently. that end jam is so powerful. everytime i hear i can see dave and co on stage playing their hearts out doing what they love to do. you know one day i hope i am doing what i love to do. i hope that i am able to do what i enjoy. dave and the boys are so incredibly lucky. wow, i just went on a major fucking tangent. where was i. oh yeah, the net. i was thinking to day about spooning. do you know how long its been since i have read a nice fat minarets message about spooning? months. is there anyone out there who remembers those great spooning messages. those were the days, but seasons change and people too. well, i am over my remembering and i am going to go drink some warm milk or something to make me fall asleep. sorry if am too fucking behind on taping. go read another post if you want trades. oh shit, that will rub someone the wrong way. good night.............tom 14 hours until i get to see the boys live. i need a concert baaaaaaaaaaaaaddd!Top Permalink

I got a post today saying that the DMB show it Wilmington on the 15th has been moved to the 16th. Is this true? OK, lets clear this up for y'all- The show on the 15th has been changed to the 16th. Yes, this is Easter Sunday. This show is in Wilmington, North Carolina. The show tonight was incredible. Look at the setlist and you'll agree. The highlight of the evening was definitely the 3 song encore of which two were new songs. I can't identify them, but let me assure you that they weren't Cry Freedom, Say Goodbye, Get In Line,Maker, Angel or any other halfway old songs. and a half and I would have to say that it was probably the band's worst performance. They did not seem into really playing like they used to, probably because they are constantly touring. The band appeared to be out of touch with its audience. They did not connect with enthusiasm that many people had going into the show. Yet, I must say thay I was happy to see that WWYS was not played, since it would have sent all the junior high schoolers in attendance into hysterics. As my roommate so eloquently said it, he had not seen so many people with braces since high school. I long for the days of DMB's last appearance at Duke-- on the Quad in September of 1993. I guess this constant touring and RCA requirements have taken their toll on the band, because they are not the same as when they were the biggest attraction at Southeast colleges. Such is the price of fame. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ | "They say I'm lazy, | Simeon Wallis | | But it takes all my time. | Duke University | | I keep on going, | (919) 613-1159 | | Guess I'll never know why." | swallis@acpub.duke.edu | | -"Life's Been Good" by Joe Walsh | -------------------------------------------------------------------------Top Permalink

I just got back from the show and I though it rocked. Some of my thoughts from the show. 1. Before the show, we were walking by Dave's bus and Carter stuck his head out and said HI. We hung out with him for about 40 minutes and just shot the shit. It was cool. He is really a great guy, not to mention an incredible drummer but that goes without saying. He said they are going into the studio in Sept. He also said there were no plans for an live ep which was posted here a while back. Anyway, it was a very cool experience. 2. There were way too many high schooler's there and that mostly sucked. The five rows directly behind me were all young as hell and sat during everything except ants and satellite. Thank god no WWYS. Anyway, I heard one of these teenie-boppers, asked the other what song was Dave playing now. (It was Warehouse). The other chick said I don't know, I must be new and unreleased. What the shazz is this? 3. Boyd was on fire tonight. Dancing Nancies rocked hard. Also, it was nice to hear Lie in our Graves, So much to Say, and two step. Of course, these little high schoolers had no clue what was going on. They thought I was mostly weird because I was singing all of the words. 4. I will probably remember more stuff later but I am at a loss here. I think the fifth of Cuervo had something to do with it. Oh yeah, does anyone know anything about the two new songs? I thought the first one sounded familiar. Also, did anyone tape the show? Sorry for the long message and sorry if it is not coherent, again it is the cuervo thing. Rock on.Top Permalink
ago...incredible! That's about all I can say! The whole band was jamming, and Boyd went absolutely CRAZY!!! It seemed like they were really excited about being back in the Southeast. Great setlist too, with a lot of non-album cuts (Lie In Our Graves, So Much To Say, Say Goodbye, Two-Step) and an encore with TWO NEW SONGS and an incredible Watchtower. I won't bother posting the setlist, I'm sure it's already been done, but I'll add some highlights...Boyd's solo on Dancing Nancies was absolutely AMAZING, he seemed to get more energy the longer he played...Leroi had his bright spots too, with two solos during a Watchtower jam...Stephan solo too!!! I've never heard a bass solo from DMB like that one...jamming! Carter was on as always too. Smiles were flashed throughout the night, as the band seemed to live off of the audience's energy. Of course there were the obligatory screams during the first few chords of Satellite and Ants, but besides that the crowd seemed to be just really having a great time, and the band seemed to love every minute of it! *------- If ANYONE happens to have taped that show, please contact me...I've got a lot of great shows that would make a great trade...Thanx!Top Permalink
i guess for an opener i'd have to say seek up is a classic b/c of the way it builds so nicely, but *granny* ;) is such a happy song- it would really put me in the best mood possible for the rest of the show...it's a toss up in my book. shalom, pam "Imagine that the sun itself is your heart and shine on infinitely without looking back..."Top Permalink

Hey everyone- air, what they can play, etc. It's sorta lame that they can't just play what they want, but hey, that's marketing for you...I hate to do it, but despite a few vicious flames this guy sent out, it seems to me he's just doin' his job, and I think we should take it easy on him...treat others as they would y....well, you get the idea - I don't mean to preach, but we should probably show people how friendly we can be, rather than nasty...it's not like it was his idea to give all the academy tickets away on his station...sorry for the lecture - Peace- ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Steve, I've gotten a few "hell no, we won't forget" messages, but i'm looking forward to this kind of dialogue. The station uses a system which has worked for mass targeting for over 2 decades now. Here are the steps. A band is signed to a major label. The major label produces an album and instantly presses up "promo" copies of a single for radio. The record promotion person meets with the music directors in his local area, and tries to get airplay based on some statistical data like influential station "A" or "B" has added the song and is supporting it; sales are strong in your area, shows sales figures, articles written in local press, reviews of concerts, college radio support, etc. All this and a strong sales pitch are brought to the table every Tuesday (known as record add day across America) at radio stations everywhere. The more influential, the more pressure to get it added on that station. Certain stations such as Z100 carry tremendous weight when it comes to factoring a record position on the charts, because of the number of potential buyers the song gets exposed to. Well anyway, the music director then proceeds to the Program Directors office, and they discuss all of the possibilities. He has meanwhile networked with other influential stations and higher ups in the record company by phone, and already has an idea which songs he has to take a strong look at. 3 or so songs make the cut. They get added to the playlist. Most new songs get moderate airplay at first (1x every 6 hours, or 4 plays per day), then as they begin to sell, move into hotter rotations, all the way to the hottest rotation 2 hours & 15 minutes). Theres no time to go playing cuts all over the album because you lose focus, and the audience becomes too unfamiliar with the artist. You only have so many slots to fill, and if you play a different cut each time, you end up losing the audience because they are tuning in for a favorite cut and you're giving them something totally different than they're expecting. They like cut 2 but you're on cut 7. The cut 2, so just wait an hour or two and you'll get it. The average listener only listens to a radio for a maximum of 3 hours in one period. In mornings it's so short, literally 15-45 minutes in a car...The good music it works very well. You win by playing to those numbers, statistics, etc. It's very methodical. A computer is constantly keeping the seperation on these songs and giving them their proper rotation. So who decides? Not me...it's the Band (what single), The Record Company (how hard they push), the Program Director on our end, then Music Director who operates the computer. The rest is all statistical data, compared to call out research (we play snippets of songs over the phone to thousands of random calls each week and ask people if it's familiar, unfamiliar, love, hate, or indifferent-each song is studied), then quarterly we check out the oldies in focus studies, auditorium tests...it's very mathamatical and calculated)...that's the way radio (all formats) does it, regardless of what they tell you [with the exception of college radio]. It's been done that way and I don't know if it will ever change. Research plays a key role in the decisions...which is ultimately the people's opinion anyway. Hope i've helped... HumanTop Permalink

Last night at my friend's house (I don't have a TV) I saw the What Would You Say video for the first time and I was all excited! I know y'all don't think the fact that they are on MTV is necessarily a good thing, but, ya know, I want every chance to see the boys that I can get. You remember the 1st time you heard DMB on the radio? You remember how you got really excited and wouldn't let anyone talk until the last sounds of the song had ended and the next song had long since begun. You remember how you smiled the whole time it was playing and kept smiling everytime you thought of it for the rest of the day? Well, that's how I felt when I saw the video, so you won't see me trashing MTV. If they give him some exposure, that's what counts, right? People get a little silly about it all if they don't stop to think (I know I do)... You get jealous if someone else seems to threaten your "hugest fan in the universe" status. But you gotta admit, DMB is on it's way to great things, and if being overplayerd on the radio, adored by pre-pubescent kiddies, and putting a video on MTV is a step on the way to that, you won't see me complaining. I trust my boys enough to let them do what they need to do to get where they want to be.If that means compromising and playing a special concert for Z100, I may get a bit nervous, but I'll try to just sit back and wait until they get back to doing what makes them happy... I could go on and on and on, but I think I've taken up enough time here... If you wanna know what else I had to say, drop me an email. Hell, if you DON'T wanna know what else I had to say, drop me an email. My mailbox has been getting pretty empty lately.... Human I don't know if I buy this... the fact that it's a 20 year old research system, and the fact that most people I know can't stand commercial radio makes me think there could be another way to do it. But I guess there is, actually. College radio. Ol' Human said it himself. Listen to icollege stations, call in and request Granny, or whatever else you want to hear. BE on college radio. I loved being a dj cos I knew that for at least 2 hours a week, people could turn on the radio and _not_ have to hear the same old thing. So now that we know all about mass media marketing, let's stop bugging this guy. I think he's redeemed himself. -Dash ps- keith, thanks for the Brown's island... it'ssounding great! :)Top Permalink
