Open Up The Sky
50OGLESBY@CUA.EDU Sat Apr 1 04:32:28 1995
hey now!
how are all of you? well, another lonely night in the life of a drama major
who gets out of rehearsal too late to go out. anyway, i picked up a copy of
From Good Homes' RCA debut, "Open Up The Sky". it is great! i don't know how
many of you caught them opening for DMB last fall, but they can jam! their
album pretty much captures their live sound, which is cool. oh, and if you
put your copy of UTTAD next to a copy of OUTS, you will notice that both side
labels are put together in an identical manner. could it be that RCA feels
fans are more likely to buy the album if it looks like DMB's? just a thought.
so, in closing, everyone's record collection would be greatly enhanced by
the purchace of "Open Up The Sky". talk to you later.....

Re: following up
briggdl9@wfu.edu Sat Apr 1 04:41:16 1995
According to my source in Athens, the video was shot at the Ga.
Theater. I was there and tried to sneak in but they tossed my
sorry ass out. I am not positive that it was there, but that is
the word around athens, so no flames please.
1) WWYS Video - I know it was shot at the Fox theatre, but I believe
(and I may be wrong, I've been wrong before) only parts were shot
there, with many of the live crowd scenes from the Georgia Theatre in
Athens, GA, October - '94. Can anyone clear this up? Anybody go to the
video shoot in Boulder? All I know is that I can see my college
friends in the video and they were in Athens. Oh, well.
2) I had noticed DMB tapes had become known as "bagbys" and did not
know if this was in reference to their soundman and my old high school
friend, Jeff Bagby. or not - guess it is so. Also, a few people
commented that he is a great guy - which is true. He is also very good
at what he does and he is only 23 (maybe 22) years old! He and I used
to go to all of the "Indecision" (what a great band) shows at TRAX in
Ch'ville, and he used to help them (learn from them) with their sound.
Kind of interesting.
3) "The Song that Jane Likes" - I think my post/story about the
incident at the GA Theatre was a bit confusing. I am a bit confused
myself. I know Anne was Dave's sister who was murdered and that Jane
is his young sister pictured in UTT&D. However, I think what Dave was
saying at the GA Theatre that night was that he had just returned from
South Africa and Anne's funeral. He now was without her, and wanted to
play a song that was loved by his little sister, Jane. I don't know.
Can any one help? Anybody there? I was schnockered at that show (go
figure) and am still kind of sketchy on its details. Maybe someone has
the tape - should be around February/March of '94 from the GA Theatre.
4) Thanks to all traders who responded to my grovelling - I'll be in
touch soon with my list.
Hope everyone has a good weekend!

I am glad to see that Karen and my good friend Shannon are trying
to put some life back into the net... Karen made me laugh for the first
time in a long time, while reading posts... and shannon, although displaying
what some may see as a negative post, is actually talking about the band...
I personally agree with her and her point of view... And it is all right
if you agree or disagree... but discuss it... in length if you prefer...
or just personally to the person...
I posted a day or two ago about ti possibly being Dave's Birthday...
I got not one response...So...
WHEN IS DAVE"S BIRTHDAY?
Someone out there knows and I can't believe I didn't get a response...
I must say that it was good to smile again while reading a post... I remember
it always being like that... I know it isn't the same as it used to be and
that it can't be because of the size of the net, but try... It can be a lot
more fun then this...
Use a little common courtesy and some netiquette (sp?) and you may be
surprised at how weell things turn out... It should be a great place to
talk about the band and better yet a great place to make friends... give
it a try...

Hey everybody, just got back from the WSP concert here were I go to school.
JACKOPIERCE was the opener and they closed the show w/ Typical Situation
into their last song, it was very cool. I talk to Cary(Pierce) after the
show and asked him if they play any other DMB songs and he says they throw
them in a lot and really liked DMB. He was very interested in the band and
asked about shows I had seen. He was wondering how DMB and BHTM figured
out who headlined each night. Does anybody know how they did this??? It
doesn't(or didn't) seem like there was any pattern in terms of where the
band was playing geographically. I.E. in Cincinnati BHTM closed, but in
Columbus it was DMB.... Milwaukee- DMB, Chicago-BHTM... Oh well just
wondering...so check out JACKOPIERCE and you might get a DMB tune thrown in
with it...
I also wanted to apologize again for any personal posts that I inadveretly
sent to the entire net. I was catching up on some trades and replying back
to people and forgot that some of the posts I was replying to were sent
before the listerv was corrected, sending it to the entire net instead of
who wrote the post. So to anyone that I offened, I'm truly sorry....
On another note, to everyone I'm trading with, I'm catching up and will be
in touch...(Greg tapes out hopefully tomorow).
Once again thanks for the bandwidth....

If someone could please give me some info. on the DaMaBa show in Memphis
(when, where, tickets), I would be veeery, veeery thankful.
I've been looking forward to seeing the band after a long break, they don't
tour in the Deep South all that often.
If anyone has stories about Super Jam IV in Athens, Ga. last summer they
would like to share, let's talk. Personally, I thought that it was the
best festival of the year, not some overcommercialized production like the
one that was all over mtv (I'll stay away from the mtv subject).
Sorry about the waste of bandwidth.

Hey all,
Just my comment on the "Is the band better with or without Peter"
debate. I realize I am probably in the minority on this, but I feel strongly
that the band is better sin Peter. My reason is this... I don't like it when
Dave's guitar, which to me is the coolest sound out there is drowned out my
Peter playing a sustained note on the keyboard. My best example of this is
from Chapel Hill 2/11/93 during Jimi Thing. Even though Peter played some
incredible jams, which I like a lot, as a whole I like hearing DMB without
keys. It would be cool, however, if he could come to a few shows and play
the harmonica for So Much To Say! I haven't heard it yet from the current
tour, but I would love to get my "little hands" on a copy. If anyone out
there has one of the shows in '95 with So Much To Say on it, let me know
through personal mail and we can set up a deal. I have about 70hrs of DMB,
so we should be able to set up a cool trade.

Hey,
I can't believe no one has said this. The team that DAMABA would be
playing in the championship would be the HATED RCA EXECS!!!!!! Yea. The only
reason that they would be in the championship game in the first place would be
because it was in their contract. Their athetic ability sucks. Of course it
doesn't help their cause that they are playing in suits that are way too tight
and their ties are choking them. Their cheerleaders are all a bunch of robot-
like creatures who only have one cheer, that they do the whole game, much to
the dismay of the DAMABS fans, team, and cheerleaders. The cheer is called
"What Would You Say"!!!!!!!!! Go figure. Enough lack-of-sleep induced
rambling for now, time to go to bed. Later,

Hey All,
I was just looking at the set list from the House Of Blues in New
Orleans (2/17/95) and it looks cool. If anyone was at this show and taped it
(I don't mean the thing on TV) I would love to hear from you. The set is
much longer than the shows with BHTM, and I think it would make a nice
addition. Anyway, get back to me if you have this show and want to trade.

I live in Florida and was wondering if anybody knows what dates the DMB
will play down here. I know about the Orlando show 10 Apr, but I go to
school in Tallahassee, which is far, far away, and I have a slew of
classes the next day. So, if anybody has the 411 on gigs closer (maybe
Jacksonville, Panama City, or even S. Georgia), I'd appreciate it.
Thanks a lot...

Hey,
The concert at the Acadamey on April 5 in NYC is sponsored by Z100. It
has been called an acoustic concert, but of course the band is acoustic
anyway. What I know of is that the only way to get tickets is by winning
them from Z100. The comercial talking about the concert had some
interesting things to say, like The Dave Matthews Band was going to be the
next Madonna. Yuk! The concert is going to be a small 200 person concert
and they are going to pick one hundred people out of the crowd for DMB's
next video. I guess it will be like WWYS' video with small concert clips.
Anyone have any ideas what the next video will be? Ants Marching? I hope
this is not a repeat and I hope RCA doesn't sell them out. Anyone else
catch Dave at Laffayette College on Feb. 25 and have a setlist or a
recording. Talk to ya'll later.

Does anybody out there know anything about an Edwin McCain
or TR3 mailing list or www site.

Personally, I like a lot of songs better in the Griesar-Era not because of spectacular jams by
Peter, but the way he backed everyone up and seemed to tie it all in together so nicely. One
of the 2001/Dueling Banjos intro to Ants and an amazing, marathon version of Jimi Thing, where
IMHO Peter's keys add a lot of life to the song that it just doesn't seem to have on UTTAD or
even at the Avalon in Boston (10/8/94, the last show I was at where they played it). If anyone
hasn't heard this Jimi, Dave and the boys break into Prince (artist formerly known as) lyrics
from "Sexy Motherfucker":
"Sexy Motherfucker shakin' that ass, shakin' that ass, shakin' that ass"
"Jimi thing is about. . .your Jimi thing. Your Jimi Thing can be anything you want it to
be. All I gotta say is that Boyd's got a big Jimi Thing, and mine's not quite as big as Boyd's,
so you decide for yourself."
Just one more thing, I think Peter's keys add a certain sinister quality to songs like Dangerous
Hours/Help Myself, Spotlight, and Rhyme and Reason, the dark, brooding, evil side of DMB.
Especially Spotlight!!!
Just Rambling, (again)

This is absolutely awful and something only a demon like yourself
could appreciate. I made the horrible mistake of reading this while I
was eating breakfast (yes, I eat at least two meals a day at work, I
told you the working world sucks). I'm not exactly sure who would
write something like this, but I do have to admit that the story isn't
completely implausible. I've had similar discussions with friends of
mine that have what they consider an unsightly mole. Their pseudo
scientific approach to the situation is very similar to this guy's.
This is what happens when a smart person has too much time on their
hands and has access to one too many episodes of Emergency 911.
See you,

forwards shuddering
I once chopped pieces of foreskin off my penis with
a pair of cuticle scissors.
Now that I've got your attention, I'll go back and
tell the whole story. Apologies if it gets a little lengthy,
but this yarn deserves to be spun well.
BACKGROUND
After I was circumcised as an infant, the wound was
not taken care of with sufficient diligence, and it healed
incorrectly. Portions of the raw edge of the remaining
foreskin bonded to the glans, a little bit above the lower
edge of the glans. This left a series of "skin bridges",
basically sections of foreskin which can't be retracted,
because they are fused to the glans at one end and the shaft
at the other. These varied in width from about 1/16" to
1/4", and were attached off and on over about 2/3 of the
circumference.
This was never a major problem. It was a long
time before I even realized it was abnormal. Everything
functioned properly, but there were a few minor problems
with it which made me wish I could fix it. Mainly,
1. It was a cosmetic defect -- it didn't look good.
2. It was tough to keep clean under the bridges -- I had to
swab it with a Q-tip now and then to knock down smegma
buildup.
3. Some of the most sensitive parts of the glans were
hidden under relatively insensitive chunks of foreskin,
robbing me of the proper stimulation which was mine and
every man's birthright.
Over the past few years, I'd been thinking of getting
it corrected, but there were problems. Doctors cost
money, and I didn't have it, and student insurance sure
wasn't gonna cover it. Plus, the thought of some strange
doctor chopping at my peepeehead gives me chills.
Now, all a doctor would do it sterilize it, numb it,
cut it and bandage it. "Hell, maybe I can do that!", I
thought. The problem was how to kill the pain. I
experimented with cutting myself (with an x-acto knife),
but seeing as it always hurt like hell before I even cut
anything, I never went through with it.
Recently, I came back and studied the situation.
Again, the problem with the self-surgery approach was
dealing with pain. There had to be some way of numbing
the area, but how? One winter day, it hit me. If cold can
make fingers go numb, then cold can also make a
ManTool[tm] go numb. With this in mind, I pioneered a
the "home penile self-surgery procedure".
SURGERY KIT
Cuticle scissors (1 pair)
Rubbing alcohol (1 bottle)
Antibiotic ointment (1 tube)
Anti-bacterial soap (1 bottle)
Gauze pads (lots, various sizes)
Ice cubes (iodine added to water for sterility)
Clean Washcloth (freshly laundered with lots'o bleach)
Well-lit work area (the kitchen table)
PROCEDURE
Wipe down work area with alcohol. Clean penis with soap
and water, then with alcohol. Wash hands thoroughly.
Soak scissors in alcohol.
Holding the ice cube with the washcloth (to prevent your
fingers from going numb), apply the ice cube to the target
area. Hold for 5 to 10 minutes, until area is numb.
Using the cuticle scissors, sever the skin bridge as closely
as possible to its connection with the glans. Then sever the
foreskin end of the bridge in such a location as to leave an even
edge on the foreskin.
Use gauze pads and direct pressure to stop the bleeding, then
apply antibiotic ointment and bandage.
THE OPERATIONS
Though the operations are not painful if done
correctly, the healing process is a real pain in the ass. It
also takes a certain state of mind to be able to cut your
own flesh. I would kind of put myself into robo-man
zombie mode for the operations, in that I never dwelled on
what I was doing, I just mechanically plodded through all
the steps without thinking about how totally gross it was.
Since the ice cube could only numb a small portion
of the penis, and since I could only tolerate so much
trauma to my dick in one session, it took 6 separate
operations, spread out over a two week period, to
cut/remove all of the skin bridges.
Operation #1 (Day 1)
The test cut. I chose a small thin skin bridge, about
1/16" across. I held the ice cube on for 5 minutes. The
ice caused a peculiar kind of "cold ache", but it wasn't that
bad. I gingerly made the cuts, and sliced through with no
pain at all. There was some minor bleeding, but because
of the speed at which I worked, I had finished and had the
gauze on it before the wound had any chance to bleed
significantly. After about 10 minutes the bleeding was
stopped and I bandaged it up, no problem at all. Only a
tiny little speck of flesh had been removed, rather
unimpressive looking.
Operation #2 (Day 3)
Operation #1 turned out so well, I decided to go for
big game this time. The target was the mother of all skin
bridges, about 1/4" across and very thick and meaty.
Again, I made the preparations and applied ice for 5
minutes.
I made the first cut along the glans, and was
surprised at how much I had to bear down on the scissors.
This skin was surprisingly tough. I finished that cut, and
then turned my attention to the cut on the foreskin side.
Wanting to get it done quickly, I decided that two large,
powerful snips should do the job. I bore down and made
the first cut, and realized with a shock that IT HURT LIKE
HELL.
Well, it turns out that due to the thickness of the
skin bridge on that end, the cold hadn't penetrated deeply
enough, and it hadn't gone numb. So, I was left with a
problem. I had a half severed bit of foreskin hanging off
me, and no anesthetic. My only recourse was to finish the
cut. I thought, "Shit. This will hurt.". So I lined up the
scissors, closed my eyes, and as quickly and powerfully as
I could, I made the snip. My prediction was correct; it did
hurt (don't you hate when you're right about things like
that?). I managed to avoid shouting out, instead opting for
a few simple gasps and whimpers.
I resolved to hold the ice on for much longer in
future operations.
Being that this was a bigger cut than the first, it
bled much more profusely. It took about 20 minutes of
direct pressure and a lot of gauze until I could staunch the
main flow. Even then it kept oozing blood for a few
hours. I spent the rest of the evening with nothing on
below the waist, sitting in front of the TV with a few
brews (this became standard procedure for all forthcoming
operations). Any motion tended to make it break open and
bleed again, so I moved around very little. I was
functioning (that is, walking) almost normally again by the
next day, but it took about 5 days before this one
completely stopped oozing blood.
As I gingerly hobbled back into the kitchen for
another brew, I spotted IT, the severed hunk-o-foreskin that
I had left on the table. It was of fairly good size, about
1/2" by 1/4" and maybe as thick as a piece of bacon.
Suddenly, strange thoughts entered my skull, and a raging
mental battle between good and evil ensued.
destiny."
diseases!"
diseases in there, you already got."
fingertip. BFD."
So, I ate it. Turns out it was very tough and
chewy, kind of like biting a little piece of rubber. I
chewed for about 5 minutes, but didn't make any progress
on breaking it down, so I swallowed it. It had a little bit
of blood flavor at first, but after that it had no flavor at all;
rather disappointing in that respect. Maybe I should have
cooked it.
Operation #3 (Day 10)
A medium sized cut. I held the ice cube on much
longer (10 minutes instead of 5), so there was no problem
with pain. Not nearly as much bleeding, but still a
respectable amount.
Any hard-on would tear the wounds open and start them
bleeding again. This would be a problem for about 3 or 4
days until the wounds had healed sufficiently. Basically,
I had to spend a long, long time without even thinking a
nasty thought. Of course, when I was asleep I had no
control over the process, which would always result in me
waking up with a dick that hurt and bloody bandages. I
was really lovin' life at moments like these.
Operation #4 (Day 12)
Another medium sized cut, but with the added
bonus of having a small vein (about 1 mm in diameter)
running through the skin bridge. Now, the blood supply
for the penis mainly runs through blood vessels buried deep
inside. When you get down the the small vessels, the
circulatory system becomes more of a spiderweb, with
redundant paths going to every point. So I knew it wasn't
actually dangerous to cut it, but it was still a kind of
psychological obstacle. I expected this one to be a heavy
bleeder, and I wasn't disappointed. It took about a full
hour of direct pressure to get the severed ends of the vein
to close up. Otherwise, not too much of a problem.
Operation #5 (Day 14)
I was planning on more time to let the others heal,
but due to changes in the way skin tension was being
applied to the remaining bridges (because I'd cut some
others away), one small bridge was getting a lot of stress
and starting to hurt. So I chopped it quick and easy, no
real problems.
Operation #6 (Day 15)
The problem with operation #5 was that it just
transferred the stress to the next bridge down the line. So
even though I had about 3/4" of flesh left to cut, I resolved
to do it all at once in one last cutting frenzy.
Due to the size of the operation, it took a while to
complete (maybe 1 minute total), which gave the blood a
chance to flow. I had to stop a few times and wipe away
blood so I could see what I was doing. Strangely, this
didn't bother me at all. It seemed perfectly normal that I
should be wiping up copious amounts of blood flowing
from my bleeding pecker which I had sliced open myself.
Actually, it seemed kind of cool at the time, which led me
to speculate at the time that I had gone insane, which I also
thought was pretty cool.
Anyway, except for the excess blood which had
dripped on to the chair, it went quite well. The only thing
that really grossed me out was when I noticed I had blood
all over my hands. If any psychoanalysts want to analyze
that tidbit for me, feel free, though I really don't care.
The wounds are now completely healed, and the
1. There are no scars to speak of, just a few bumps on the
glans. This is because I didn't trim the flesh quite close
enough in a few spots. They kind of resembling little
warts. I thought about going back and trimming them off,
but I kind of like 'em now. After all, it's not everyone
who has the privilege of appearing to have warts, without
actually being diseased.
2. Without the skin tension holding things back, total dick
length has increased by 1/4". (Of course I've measured the
length of my dick. Like you haven't?)
3. It's a great topic for dinnertime conversation. Women
generally seem to find it quite interesting. Men generally
turn kind of pale.
With my newfound surgical skills, I've been
contemplating a few more self-surgical procedures. You
know, mole removal, wart removal, nose jobs, the whole
vista of cosmetic surgery. I'll need some help for that
mole on my back, which means training an assistant. Ah,
the future looks interesting indeed ...

Has anyone else in the nyc area been sitting by the phone listening to
hell-radio Z100 waiting to get dave tix? For the last few hours I have,
and just listening to the shit they play has made me a mean, bitter person.
Is it true that calling in and winning tix is the only way to get them? At
this rate my anger towards such terrible music mixes will force me to beat
the hell out of someone...of course, don't tell Z100 I said that, 'cause if
they give me tix to see dave I'd be the Z100 poster boy...
Ok, enough negativity from me for now...bye, jon.

Well,
Just an update on DMB outbreaks. Today before noon meal
formation (lunch) at the United States Naval Academy there was a pep
rally. Kicking it off, on huge speakers blasting all over campus was none
other thatn the Dave Matthews Band, unfortunately it was only on cd, but it
still had a profound effect. Some people might think it's crazy to say that
DMB "does" things to people, but it does. People walking out of classes were
smiling, laughing, and dare I say even singing and dancing. It really livened
up the day. Seeing how much we enjoyed the band on cd I was wondering
what it would take to get them to play at a venue, say here? If anybody out
there has a clue, please let me know. We've got an arena, a small hall, a
radio station, the works, anything a group could want. So any help would
be appreciated.
Thank you very much,
Ken

howdy fellow minareters,

i am looking for lotsa versions of #36.
if anyone would be so kind as to let me know what tapes they have with #36, i
would be willing to trade my shows.
i can send my shows to those who are interested.

Does anybody have a digital copy of 12-9-93 DMB w/ Tim Reynolds on electric? I
want this tape on DAT and I have many gems to trade in return (DMB and lots of
others), including the night before which also has Tim Reynolds.
Let me know- and thank you

Well
I was sitting around bored out of my tree, spining off tapes for
msteckle when I decided to check out the DMB newsgroup. It is so void of
knowledge and life it's sad that Daves name is attached to it. It had some
trade posts which can be expected but then there were ?s like" How is Dave's
1st album." I said wait, hold on a minute here. Not that I am for flaming
people or have ever flamed anyone but I could only imagine what Death threats
and hilarious rags this would bring about if it were posted to minarets.
When I first read on minarets that a Newsgroup was to be formed and that it
was going to allow us to have the same benefits, but with out the mail i was
all for it. Instead it is a disturbing place wich I hope none of you will
venture to just for your own mental stability. Well anyway, I guess not
everyone is into DMB as much as the people on Minarets or else they would
stick it out and get that mail or digest and smile when they get it because
it is about Dave, Carter,Steffan,Boyd,& Leroi whom put out some of the
lovliest tunes known to man. Let the MTVEERS be and let them post there
sillyness to the Newsgroup cause we still got our MINARETS. (I am really
starting to dislike WWYS).
------------------------------
Does anyone out their know Andrew Corbett? He used to work with DMB at either
Trax, or the Floodzone. I just want to get in touch with him to send him
some free stuff. It's because of him I got to meet Dave & Co. I would just
like to thank him. I think his band might have opened up for the Samples
recently. If anyone has his address or knows this great man E-me.

I can't figure this out. Everyone's talking about the newsgroup
alt.music.dave-matthews, but my newsserver (NEWS.CLOUD9.NET) doesn't seem to
carry it. Anybody know how I can get it on there?
Also - about the peter debate it seems I have stirred up (2 weeks later?). I
think certain songs (2 step!!!, lover lay down, cry freedom, SMTS) are better
off with the keys, but that others (jimithing, dancing nancies) are better off
without them. I agree that the music sounds less cluttered, and that it gives
boyd and leroi opportunities to showcase their own talents, but the jams
really aren't what they could be otherwise. Funny thing though, I think the
newer versions of warehouse w/o keys are better - 'specially in the chorus

A lot of people on the net are asking about places to order
cheap blank tapes. In New York there's Uncle's Stereo which
sells blanks cheap - Maxell XLII-S 90 for $1.75, MX 90 for
$2.29 each, for example. They have all major kinds - Sony,
Maxell, TDK, etc.
I didn't know that they handled mail order (in fact I still
don't) but in Sunday's paper they had an 800 number.

I don't work at this place or anything, but I do get all my
blank tapes here. It may be worth trying for mail order.
No promises, just trying to help....

For those who haven't been able to get the newsgroup, although I'm not
even going to bother, since the traffic has slowed down a little here on
minarets, but for the "alt" groups of which DMB was set up ususally you
have to tell you server company or university technologies department
that you want to receive this becuase there a many "alt" groups starting
every day and the sheer number would overload most of the current servers
memory. send an e-mail message or call to the administration at your server.

From Good Homes, a band that opened up for DMB during some
of his fall tour, has a major record label debut that comes
out on Tuesday March 28. It is called "Open Up The Sky" and is
on RCA. It should be in most stores and if it isn't just
ask for it. They also have another album called "Hick-Pop."
They are also touring and if anyone would like to know
the dates, e-mail me back.

Anyone who has been around can attest to all the accounts of people a few
months back that posted up-to-the-minute accounts of each of the three,
yes, 3, consecutive shows at the fox theater AND the 4:00 filming of the
video. The live shots, as most "live" shots for videos are, were
staged. They played the song over and over in the afternoon before their
real show. Everyone said it was wierd seeing 'em lip synch and fake it
while the stereo played the single.
I really hate to do this ands bring up old stuff, but I figure that some
insight might be helpful to some. Later on kids...

Hey, I need some help.....I am looking for FJB at the Vic in Chicago. I
have between 15-20 hours of Dave to trade for including the Vintage Dave
show I wrote about a couple of weekes ago that has spotlight and about 7 early
acoustic songs. Please get back to me as soon as possible, I'm trying to
work this out so I can give it to a very dear friend of mine who lives in
Chicago, if not FJB then the Samples would be great too. Sorry for the
waste of bandwidth, I feel like a bum, but I figured this would be a
better way to get the word out. Thanks guys, and hey Steph at IU. We will
be getting together soon to trade.

The wwys video was shot at Fox Theater in Boulder, Colorado. DMB played
three sold out shows at the Fox 11/17-11/19. The video directors arrived
form L.A. on thursday and watched dave's show. The video was shot the
next day, on Friday (I think...it is a bit fuzzy now).
If you need to get your hands on hard core proof, check out the 11/18/1994
issue of the Denver Post. On the back page of the Living Arts section there is an
article on dave. In the article dave calls the video a "slap-dash job,
with no disgruntaled babes". He goes on to say that he is surprised by
the sucess of WWYS, calling it the most "ambigous" song on UTTAD.

Right before the show while we were inside i was able to talk to Cater about th
e entire europe thing. He said they like it but they don't really get to see
anything b/c RCA has them on a crazy tour. He said they were going to put
on a great show and boy washe right.
IMHO seek up was a great opener. They jammed it out for 10 minutes at least.
After that the intro to two step was awesome, both boyd and dave trading licks
while strumming. 2 step ws grat and really cool b/c no one sang along b/c
most of the people had not heard it.
BOWA got the crowd moving and satalite gave them a chance to sing. It was real
ly funny b/c people had been screaming for songs like ants and WWYS and dave
looked really pissed off so i yelled "play whatever the fuck you want" and
his reply was "bingo, that's what it is all about." Real cool.
Rhyme and Reason and Pay for what you get were both great. They all were so in
to both of those songs even though the rest of the crowd was not. The next son
g was hard core. Earlier while people were yelling for MTV I yelled to Boyd
that he should play True Reflections. Daves comment to that was "that's an unu
suall request" Anyway Boyd has so much fun on that song. It sort of woke him
up from his haze. Great to hear live for the first time.
Dancing Nancies was ok but dave didn't seem into it. Carter's solo between
warehouse and say goodbye was kick ass. He is sush an amazing drummer. Say
Goodbye was another highlight. Boyd's fiddle on TB waskick ass as usual. Lero
i was on fire during Jimithing.
Recwaterwine36 was killer. Again carter's solo before #36 floored me. They
ended with ants which gave people a reason to sing again.
Christmas song. just dave and cater providing soft spacey drums. NO ONE talke
d the entire song. Amazing song.
Even with just dave and cater watchtower kicked ass. At that point i was out
of my mind, just like Boyd and Leroi were the entire show. Stephen just looked
Out of the four times I've seen them, the best one bar none. Isn't that a cand

.....i'd find out how much it costs to become a rich woman.
one time dave matthews gave me $20 bills. (i can only hope
i never find myself on a levee.) it was at the 12-12-93 dave/tim
show at the movie palace in c-ville. i managed to get into to
work the show through greggggggggggggggg and just before the show
i mentioned to dave how much i wanted to see nye '93, but didn't have
the money for it. so he reached into his wallet and pulled out a
$20 buck bill and handed it over to me. cool character that dave
matthews fellow.
you know what i did with that $20 buck bill? i spent it on the
ticket. i held it in my hand and waited 'til it was time to
use it for the proper use.
maybe that's why tom gave you $20, kysa. (i wouldn't know, i
wasn't there.;) but i'm sure tom meant for the money to be
used to keep your life in one piece, and it would prolly make
him feel good to know it helped you out of a jam.
(rick finishes with stupid sentimental crap.)
i recommend the new from good homes cd. it's pretty laid back
and just makes you go "hookywacky, if i had a beer right now,
i'd be even happier!"
i reviewed it in the breeze thursday (some 20 pages after rambling
for two columns on gays'n'god).

There is no doubt in my mind that the absolute best opening song
for a Dave show is intro - One Sweet World. Just the intro itself
is probably the thing I look forward to the most. It just gives you
a little taste of everything and sets the mood for things to come.

I think it might depend on what kind of mood he's in at the time.

Need: Pre-march 93 tapes
IBASSIN@WESLEYAN.BITNET Sat Apr 1 21:19:52 1995
Hey there, I havent been on in a while but wanted to check if anyone had
some pre march 93 tapes of high quality that they wanted to trade. Ive got
over 1000 live hours to offer, 90-100 of which are dmb.
also, I was lucky enough to catch the show in Paris last week and thought

The show was tight and well jammed. The band took there time, except on WWYS
which Dave introduced by saying, "We've heard this song has been on the radio
around here....so we figured we'd play a really short version of it." The
Dancing Nancies and Jimi Thing were jammed like old time, long and inspired.
The new song was really raw, it had a cool picking pattern and Dave sort
of scat sang, it didn'e seem like he had lyrics for it yet so he was improvising
most of them, I couldn't really make out any lines except for a reference
to "sleeping like a dead dog," and some repetitive versus w/ "Never Never
[this], Never Never [that]" Overall, The crowd was American exchange students
and as far as Dave crowds go, it was VERY respectful and well behaved. We
met the band after the show and Carter said they were planning on getting
started on the next studio album when they got back to the states-i dont
know where that plan stands now. If anyone else was there, I just want to
say hello. Peace, Ian

Help Myself/Dangerous Hours/Desperate Hours
DANIELT@tiger.hsc.edu Sat Apr 1 23:53:17 1995
Well this song is anything you want to call it according to one show I have.
It seems that recently it is always called Help Myself. Older shows seem to
have more varied names. Sometimes he sings desperate hours, sometimes
desperate hours and sometimes a combination of both. Personally I think Help
Myself is the best name of all. This is not making much sense.

Quick Lay vs Say goodbye?
gclark@pipeline.com Sun Apr 2 00:43:42 1995
I have a question for all the Dave experts out there.
Why does the song Quick-Lay/Say goodbye have two different names?
I have the song quick-lay several times on tape from 93. I would think one
of my friends made a mistake on the name but I got tapes from several
people who didn't know each other.
- How do you get MINARETS Digest ?
- Does Dave have a newsgroup, and how would you use it?

Why Dave can't have AIDS
gclark@pipeline.com Sun Apr 2 00:44:04 1995
Dave can't have AIDS if he is still putting on shows. Its simple from what
I've learned about AIDS once you get "Full Blown AIDS" It's not a good idea
to continue with the strains of touring which I think are large + the
number of people you come in contact with who can give you their germs
which may end up being deadly. Unless Dave has some unusal case of AIDS
which I think is highly unlikely I think Logically its safe to say he
doesn't have AIDS. I'm not pretending to be a doctor or anything and I'm
only using the info I've learned in Bio class and what I've read in
newspapers and magazines, so if I'm wrong please feel free to correct me.
Sorry but I had put my .02 in.

Re: Quick Lay vs Say goodbye?
kadams@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Sun Apr 2 01:26:36 1995
At the beggining...when Dave started playing this song, he sometimes
didn't even sing the chorus, "Say Goodbye" - that came later. If I
remember correctly, that chorus also popped up (same music too) in the
Any/ Anti Noise Song. Anyway, people started calling it Quick Lay and
Goodbye because basically that's what the song was about. Then
supposedly Dave started calling it Say Goodbye 'cause it was about
someone he cared about (ie Not a "Quick Lay") so that name faded into
oblivion. I think the fans named this tune before he actually did so
that they could put something on their tape othere than "New Song #1"
Hope I could help...anyone out there remember the story?? Later

2 or 3 questions...short post
lono@brahms.udel.edu Sun Apr 2 01:40:49 1995
1.) I have the 93(?) Van Ryper's show...actually I have the Indecision
part, but it has a four song Dave Filler...one of the songs is Ants..
listen to the song you know what I mean. Sounds like something other than
leroi or boyd, or both. did a keyboardist sit in w/ them ? maybe Doug
Wannamaker staying over from the Indy set? just curious...kinda driving
me crazy
2) anyone got the words to Granny? He's not a very good Annunciator on
any version i have.
3) Can someone point me in the direction of shows where the boys played
Christmas Song? It's one of my top ten, and I have yet to find it on a boot.
ya'll mentioned openers.
I like seek up... I like the HA HA...i think that's the single coolest
moment in DMB time, followed by the finger-picked middle section of Boyd
on Warehouse.
I'd like to see Granny openers...or the Jimi thing is cool...or Norwegian
Woodsome people dorecentlybilliessuitejudy blue eyes(w/ guests Brent
Mydland and Jorma Kaukonen and the Tower of Power horns)
Fuck it...I'd like to see dave cover "Back to the Earth" as an opener on
fuckin MARS...let's get nutty!!!
What's the coolest possible scenario we can come up with, anyway???
3 day Dave-Fest? World Simulcast in Digital Surround sound blasting from
every freakin speaker in the country...people saying "cheers" in every
fuckin language there is, all at once.
Call it Dave across the Earth.
and TicketMaster PAYS YOU to go!!
he brings back blue water... hell, he brings back Fenton's Penis Blues too!!
Boyd sings angel, and Etta James comes out to do the girl verses.
Jesus...can you imagine...
*sigh*
my spring break is over.
cheers (in whatever language you'd prefer)
eat drink and be merry...it's Sat nite!

RCA and DMB
67006416@sunybroome.edu Sun Apr 2 03:58:43 1995
This post just goes to show what a lonely Sat. night will do to you...
I have a disc entitled HORDE... it is a promo disc and it happens
to have recently on it... This was release before there major album
debut and towards the beginning of the HORDE tour... as far as I know...
Inside it says courtesy of RCA... original version can be found on BAMA
Rags... R2T.
Let me ask you this... What other version is there? There is no original...
even the "radio cut" one is on a bama record (EP).
It is the same thing as the others...
So now let me ask you this... Is RCA really being that kind?
Courtesy... RCA?
It doesn't make sense... I think it should say, IMHO, courtesy of the
DMB... the band that actually performs the song. Once again, just my opinion.
RCA takes to much credit for things, even though the have the financial right.
One of the last posts said that Carter? said the schedulke was so weird that
they didn't even have time to see anything... or something along those lines.
No wonder why people think they are getting tired... wouldn't you? They are
only humans like you and me ( I hope). They may play the guitar better, but
(or sax or violin, etc...) but I think they may need a rest... maybe working
on a new release would be the type of "break " they need. A double disc
live album sure would be cool...
I also heard, NOT CONFIRMED, that they may PART of the HORDE tour this year...
anyone have any CONFIRMATION of this...???
I also heard that the band broke up from someone yesterday... thank god the callled me... don't worry...they are still together... I just wonder where all
these RUMORS come from? Broke up... hah...you should have heard the reason...
that is even better...
Best opener... I would have to say.....get ready, SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL!
I know they have played this in the past, but no one seems to have it on
tape. ANYONE got it? Anyone still readinfg? I would love to hear it live.
It may be the only way I ever get to hear it...
I apoligize for the rambling.... hopefully you were smart and deleted it
early on...
Just my 2 thingy's on everything...

Hello.
learning the lyrics to every song I never hoped to hear, dealing with
the Dj's talking about the band like they just crawled out into the
world and their radio station just happened to be on top of the hole to
witness it and the fatigue of calling for so many hours (Flash-redial),
I finally got through last night at about 10:45 and I am happy to say I
will be at the Academy come Wednesday night. And you know I think that I
can say that it will be worth it. Although I don't want anyone to think
that I have softened up to this idea of throwing a media blitz on Dave
and the band. But really, who knows what we have in front of us? I mean
Dave could be the next...oh I don't know...OFFSPRING or GREENDAY!!!???!
Sorry about that. If anyone was listening to this radio station this

I have an article from last year about the band. I don't remember where
I got it but they asked Dave if stranded on a desert island, which three
albums would he want with him. And I quote, "Abdulla Ibraham, because
he's so soothing, English Settlement by XTC-I love their old dirty sound.
I'm trying to think of something a little unusual, so when you're on the
desert island you don't maintain too much of the top 40 mentality. And
Trio Bulgarka-it's great music."
must be cool, if Dave likes them. Oh well, enjoy.

Hey all,
I just got a tape in the mail from 7-13-93 at Trax, and I can't ID the
second song on there, but it is after R&R and before Best of What's
Around, and has a chorus of "it's gracious of you to...." Help!!
I don't have this tape in front of me, but given the lines "it's
gracious of you," this song is called Any-noise, or Anti-noise - it's
never been established as really having a name, Dave played it and
called it 'any noise,' basically that's what the song was...
This song was performed several times before it eventually evolved into
Say Goodbye...
Oh, by the way, I don't know how concerned you are about keeping your
tapes labelled properly, but I believe the date of the show is really
7/14/93...

Dave
228133104@UCIS.VILL.EDU Mon Apr 3 03:19:24 1995
I was just thinking about what Dave and the Band does to me. There is
nothing like Dave's music to put me in a mood like non other. I just feel
high when I am listening to a great show. I just sit back, relax, and turn
up the volume. Just thought I would share some of my experience since most
of the talk on Minarets lately has been negative or gossip. I think that
Dave has a very special effect on us all...and someone recently posted about
how Dave makes her cry...he makes me cry singing Christmas Song, and Say
Goodbye...just some powerful stuff. I just went to church and the priest was
talking about how God ( I hate to bring religion or whatever into this, but)
is constantly trying to wake us up to life around us... Make us realize what
we have everyday...I thought about Dave and his music..."One Sweet World"
Anyway, I am sorry if I digress, but I just wanted to share the impact that
Dave has on my life.
Also, someone asked for Christmas Song on tape...I have a couple of shows with
it. People also have been writing about openers, and I was wondering if
anyone has the shows with "One Sweet World" or "Tangerine" opening? I havent
heard any of these as openers, but as I mentioned before I absolutely love
Seek Up as an unbelievable opener..It is the perfect song. It starts out o
mellow and jammy, and then the tempo is moved up during the chorus. Its
message is so great and powerful, I love it, and I lovw what Dave has done
to my life...Sorry if I bored you, but...

************** Duke/Dave - Party ****************
driver8@phy.duke.edu Mon Apr 3 03:53:53 1995
I've only had 5 responses so far - maybe some of you you haven't gotten
the message so here it is again.
Here are the details of the Duke-Dave party.
1) We're going to have a pre-show bar-b-que so since I am currently short
on cash as is eric...I need anyone who wants a part of the action to
email me and send a check for $5 made out to sean spicer to
2) The party is open to anyone who reads this message and wants to hag
out before and after the show - but the food and beverage must be paid
for in oder to be consumed...some of us don't have much ability to front
cash for the party - much as I love you guys I'm sorry.
3) The final decision on when and if the party is to be held will be made
based on the money aquired by 5pm Thurs. The anouncement will come via
the newsgroup and minarets. If the party is canceled then any checks can
be recollected from me the day of the show or I will mail them back to
you. (Please include your e-mail address on the check so as to facilitate
easy comunication.)
4) The party location is at the Theta Chi section on Duke's West Campus.
I hope this is cool with everyone - if not email me.
Let's all get together and have a fuckin' good time
Sean Spicer.

Sorry to do this again, but Daniel Batts at Sewanee, I lost your address.
Please get in touch with me.
I am sitting here listening to 9/30/92 (Dave Mattews "Unplugged) and I noticed
at the beginning of Minarets Boyd lays a couple of bars of "If I were a Rich
Man". I often will be listening to a show, usually an old one, and I will hear
a couple of bars that sound familiar from somewhere other than DMB's music.
I've heard Ob La Di, Ob La Da in a song before as well as many others. It is
usually either Boyd or Leroi who does this. Have others noticed this? I am
not talking about where dave starts singing Wild Thing in Warehouse or Boyd and
Leroi play Dueling Banjos in Ants. These are just subtle bits of songs thrown
in to make the listener think twice about what he or she is hearing. Anyone
noticed these before?

This is TripnBilly

Hey kids, what's up?
For anyone who is looking for me (TripnBilly, a.k.a nathan) i kinda
disappeared for a while. My e-mail account said "Fuck you" and quit on me,
so I got a new one thru the university (which i hate to do because they
monitor this shit) but anyway.
If you have been looking for me, or haven't heard from me write me
personally and we will work things out. I lost all my shit like e-mail
addresses and names and lists when my account went down, so if you know me,
get in touch with me!!
Spring Break to find out Dave had Aids for a little while. Actually I
couldn't stop laughing, because a little 13 year old just last week told me
that Dave had aids. I asked her how she found that out and she said that
her best friend's sister's roommate is dating Dave (so I guess that clears
up the gay rumors) and found out from her. Some people are so damn
gullible. Anyway. I'm going to see Dave in Greenville and in Nashville,
so if anyone knows of any parties before or after either event, post
something. If nothing is planed yet, let's get something together!
Hope everyone has an Aids free week.
Peace, love, and weed.

Howdy y'all,
computer slapped me around a bit and then left me out for dead in a ditch o
nthe side of the road, so I had to restart. . .
Anyway, I need a tape ID, and as part of that deal you get to hear my most
humble opinion about show/song openers.
Alrighty then, here is the show, I know (or I think I know) that this is from
WWYS, TrueReflections, ChristmasSong, Halloween
Couold you please email me directly with the date? thank you much. . .
person to tell me the movie and the actor who delivers that line!) . . .
The intro to One Sweet World is kickin' as usual, but the into to Song that
Jane Likes is amazing! Dave plays the last few chords of the song, picking
them really slowly, it seems like the rest of the band doesn't quite knoww what
to do, but hey finally get it together and do this extra mint cool mellow sort
a thang and then go into the song. I get Canadian Goose bumps every time I
hear it. Groovy Beans.
ANyway, that's my bit o input. . . disrgard at will.
Cograts to the child bearers. . .Guess there was a little child on the way, any
day any day. . .Was it a healthy littl, giggling and bubbling?

tell Z100 how you feel (fwd)
bdg11@columbia.edu Mon Apr 3 17:06:37 1995
hey y'all
i was watching tv just a moment ago, and saw a commercial for everyone in
the new york area's most beloved radio station - Z100, which plays
today's "best music." If you do not know, z100, the major top 40 station
in nyc and probably the country (RS's station of the year), is claiming
damaba as its own, because it actually started to play the band before
they became a buzz clip on eMpTyV. now, dave is playing a show this
wednesday at the academy in nyc, and tix are only available through
listening to Z100's shlock all day and being their 100th caller on the
half hour. this is the same station that claims that it presents the
cutting edge of music - bands like Offspring, Green Day, Aerosmith, and
Sheryl Crow.
anyway, most importantly, this commercial gave an E-MAIL ADDRESS FOR
Z100!! I propose that we write to them and give them the alarming news
that ppl have been listening to dave, trading dmb tapes, and spreading
his music for five years now, and that they are riding the coattails of
our work and love for the music. they are now giving tickets away only to
those who can stomach their commercial, soulless, pop junk 24 hours a
day. please write and tell Z100 how you feel!

I always labeled it "early Say Goodbye". It came to me labeled "Improv. of
Quick Lay". I had no idea this was Any Noise.
Oh, by the way, I don't know how concerned you are about keeping your
tapes labelled properly, but I believe the date of the show is really
7/14/93...
Are you sure? My copy of 7/14/93 starts with Any Noise and then follows
with OSW. No Rhyme or Best. Is mine an edited version?

Also, at the Birmingham show 12/28 the band blayed a little bit of 'Baby
Won't You Drive My Car' as they were starting recently. It was mostly a
Dave and Boyd effort, but Dave said it just occured to him during the concert
that the intro sounded sort of like that song. Does anyone else who was
there remember this?
I've heard "can't buy me love" (by Dave) at the end of Christmas song, as
well as "Away in the Manger" (courtesey of Tim R.) at the beginning...
It's a cookout...
She made the best damn dogs I've ever eaten
Get me another dog, baby
She made them dogs, sliced 'em up and throwed 'em on
Put some mustard on the hot dog
"Hot Dog Blues Jam"
-+Dave Mathhews and Tim Reynolds+-
I am sitting here listening to 9/30/92 (Dave Mattews "Unplugged) and I noticed
at the beginning of Minarets Boyd lays a couple of bars of "If I were a Rich

Re: tape, song ID
acox@s850.mwc.edu Mon Apr 3 20:32:42 1995
Oh, by the way, I don't know how concerned you are about keeping your
tapes labelled properly, but I believe the date of the show is really
7/14/93...
Are you sure? My copy of 7/14/93 starts with Any Noise and then follows
with OSW. No Rhyme or Best. Is mine an edited version?
My greatest apologies to whomever originally posted the question...
I was not, and am not sure of the date because I didn't and don't have a
copy right here, but because Joe seemed to know differently, I would
tend to believe that they are different shows. I'll check.
I am quite sure that the song is Any-noise, though. I think it's now
been transcribed for the lyrics file, so if anyone wants to know all the
words, check there...
help,
JOE
Also, someone asked about the 11/9/94 VA Horse Center show. My copy is
labelled as Christmas Song - Soundcheck Jam (followed by
Halloween). This jam was made up during soundcheck that night (hence the
way I have it labelled) and was performed this night and several more
times in November. Others have this labelled as Justajam (as it appears
in the chords file) and I have even another tape that has it labelled as
Talk to Me. In other words, there is no name for this song - as far as I
know, this is a Heathcliff Haiku Warriors type song, where there is no
proper name, and it doesn't really matter because it was only performed
several times...

Justajam/PB&Jam
DANIELT@tiger.hsc.edu Mon Apr 3 20:42:54 1995
The song that was played at Lexington on 11/9/94 between Christmas Song and
Halloween is labeled on my tape as PB&Jam. I have also seen/heard it labeled
as Justajam. I do not know if it has been played anywhere else. Probably one
of those impromtu jams that will never be played again. Lucky for me I was
there to hear it live. If anyone knows if this has been played again please
post and let everyone know. Later.................tom

I am desperately seeking tapes of the 2-25-95 Lafayette show and the
2-11-95 Tower Theatre in Philadelphia show. If anyone out there has
either of these shows, I'd like to work out a trade. I have about 30 hrs
of DMB, 40 hrs. Phish, as well as Blues Traveler, Led Zeppelin and the
Dead. So, if there's anyone out there, please help.

Lexington Horse Center...

Hey Mike..
What you heard after Christmas Song was an unofficial piece done by the
band that they never really named. They had rehearsed it before, but
that was the first time they played it. Jeff Bagby, the DMB soundman,
accordingly named it "Justajam". If I am wrong, then someone please
correct me..

That way, nobody can capture me.....They can use the hell out of me, but
there ain't too much they can do to me. They can mess me up, play the
wrong note, they can play a C, but they can't really destroy a C. All
it is, is a tone...So I'm gonna come back as a note.

I know there's a character that lurks the mall named Waldo.
He once inspected my Dave shirt to see if it was the old one or
a new one.
When he was done he said,"Oh it's just an old faded one."
Okay?
He prints his own "newspaper" about the downtown mall and all
the goings on in mall rat world. Last months feature article
was "cops are people too"
On a Dave note,
Is anyone going to the Wilmington show?
Is there going to be a pre or apres show gathering?
Just wondering.
