Re: HOB- what's the full setlist?

wandres@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu Sat Mar 11 23:14:50 1995

Could someone post a full setlist from when they played HOB last month
(and possibly a review too.) I'm curious to see what TBS' choices were.

 							:-)Andy

New Orleans is so cool...
Order is a little fuzzy but here is the list.

Seek Up (extra long intro)
Nancies
Warehouse
Best of...
Rhyme and Reason
Satellite
WWUS? with POPPER
Say Goodbye
Minarets
Typical
Tripping Billies
Noweigan Wood-
Recently (without jam)-
new song ?-
#36-
Ants (with extra long funky intro)

Pay 4
Watchtower

The setlist speaks for itself. The show was amazing.
Saw Dan Akroyd before the show. Does anyone know
when Dave is going to be on that HOB show? Was it
aired last night?

car3@acpub.duke.edu Sun Mar 12 01:46:16 1995

i haven't read the list in a while so i'm not sure if this is old hat or
not, but tonight i saw a 2 disc boot of "the dave matthews band live at
ziggy's." it was done by red robin records and would not see any reason
why it would not go on the black list as well...

any questions, email me forthis list is much too painful lately...

I think you might wanna check this out...

dmusser@cscsun.rmc.edu Sun Mar 12 06:00:54 1995

(3/10)!! :) !! $7 got three bands, but I missed the 1st opening band and
part of the 2nd one b/c I had to work. The second band was *Agents of Good
Roots*, a relatively new band from Richmond, who have opened up for *Dude
of Life* recently. They have raw energy on stage that is a sight to see.
If they play in your area, I suggest you check them out. If you want more
info on them, email me with subject header "message 1-AGR". They are
playing at Washington and Lee on 4/17 and at Randolph-Macon College
(my school, opening for Widespread Panic) on Earth Day Sat. 4/22.
with their new drummer Lee and funked it up with the bass and vocal
harmonies and electric guitar. Very fun show, for more info on them, email
me with subject header "message 2-ARU". They are playing tonight in New
York at "Tramp's", alternating 2 sets apiece with Milo Z. You should
definitely check them out if in the area. I was able to ask both bands
many questions b/c I felt the net community likes to hear from the bands
themselves sometimes, right? I do, at least. Sorry if I offended any body
with the length of this post, but I know we all love to be introduced to
new music...
requests seperately please); I will send you a pre-typed, thought out

(1) *Agents of Good Roots*: show review; Q&A's w/band; dates; demo.[subject
header "message 1-AGR"].

situation, HORDE, etc... ;) ); dates.[subject header "message 2-ARU"].

(3) *ARU 3/10/95*: info on getting copy of last night's show.[subject

(4) *ARU and HORDE*: Q&A's about ARU and past HORDE appearances; HORDE '95

Shannon @ the Prism

jtv2j@server.cs.virginia.edu Sun Mar 12 06:16:23 1995

Did any of you tape Shannon at the Prism Coffeehouse last week??
I'd be really interested, if you want to contact me...
Also, anyone local to Virginia who made a tape of the HOB show, let's
get together and make a few high quality copies... maybe make a tape of
that, plus the alternative nation stuff plus whatever else we can find =)

(Anyone got the Tripping Billies video??)

star dust music, etc.

ShanHop@aol.com Sun Mar 12 17:40:47 1995

I was making the rounds of music stores in charlottesville yesterday and
realized that the store Stefan's dad owns (owned?) isn't around anymore.
it's not in the phone book. Does anyone know what happened to it?

Anybody else notice that the credits on House of Blues had a few spelling
errors? Stephan K. Lessard and Leroy Moore. That's worse than when someone
on the net spells Stefan and LeRoi's name wrong, cause someone got paid to do
those credits. (Any clue on where the K came from?)

Mayhem perform Halloween. Special encores, Miss Piggy and Dave duet of Lover
Lay Down followed by Kermit and Stefan with Rainbow Connection. Check it
out, should be a killer show!************

PLEASE HELP ME W/ KC

brigg072@falcon.cc.ukans.edu Sun Mar 12 18:22:36 1995

I NEED a boot or, if nothing else, a setlist for Saturday in Kansas
City... I though Dave would be up first (with BHT to follow) and planned
my drinking accordingly, but they switched the order and I was a little
too out of it to remember much of the show.... I am so pissed at my
self!!!!!!!!!
All I know is Dave was on fire and pulled out a lengthy watchtower and
BH Todd pulled out a Vodoo Child and a Tangerine!! I promised myself I
would get that screwed up, but I let my self down...
If someone could help me salvage the night please X me.
I'll trade anything I can for a boot.
Thanks \|/

I just saw this quote in digest 100... did Dave actually say "I'm

been with a smile, but can anybody give me the context, or elaborate
 maybe? Sure would be nice....

 Dan

 ------------------------------

I am so sure that someone had to have taped the show at the State theatre. I
am dying to get a copy of the show. PLEASE someone get in touch with me
because I have to have a copy.

Also, I must get my $.02 in on the House of Blues show. It's a damn shame
that the powers that be "force" Dave and the boys to play a very predictable,
commercial set everytime they play on tv. It is a shame that everyone who
can't attend a show can't hear great tunes like bluewater, two step, lying in
our graves. Was it me or did Popper seem like he was drunk when he played
the "non-solo" part of WWYS? During his solo, he played great - - but other
 than that, well?

 ------------------------------

Just a quick rundown of the show, since it ended, what, 10 minutes ago?
 Anyway, the songs played were

 	Tripping Billies
 	Rhyme & Reason
 	What Would You Say
 	Ants Marchng
 	Best of What's Around

NO surprises at all, especially with the songs in the middle (not R&R).

THe songs themselves were alright, TB had the R2T beginning, nothing
special there, it actually sounded a lot like the R2T version all the way
 through...

 Just your typical R&R...

What Would YOu say was nice, Popper came out, and I thought that this was
really good, if for no other reason than Popper - I guess I had forgotten
how well that guy can jam. Though I've never been a huge fan of WWYS, I
must say that it was pretty good tonight...

Ants, it was just a matter of time, it was nice that Boyd played
something other than that standard filler that he almost uses, it's nice
 when you don't hear it...

And as an 'encore,' BOWA was pretty standard.

All in all, a pretty good show, too much Joan Osborne, the only thing I
can say about her is that it seemed (to me) that she got better as she
went along, but hearing about her 'right hand man' and a spider web got
 old.

The little interview that they did with the band was nice, though now
I've heard several different stories to how the band began, all told by
the band members themselves. Damnit, they need to get their facts
 straight (hehehehe).

I didn't think it was possible, but Zima commercials are even worse than
 Zima itself...

 Andrew

 Hey All,
I never realized I had a problem as an optomist until tonight. I didn't
expect to see a real concert on TV, but I did expect to have TBS allow the
band to actually perform some of their songs. Instead I got to hear songs
cut off, idiots talking about the band, and a sea of commercials so large it
could apply for ocean status. Nevertheless, it was cool to see the boys
"live". One of the only cool things about it was seeing Carter in action
from above and close up. I used to play drums, so I was particularly
impressed with the man's talents. He is probably the only drummer I have
seen or heard that can actually make use of a drum set that extensive. Dave
seemed to be enjoying himself, and Boyd and LeRoi also did.
The setlist is as follows (as if you don't know already):

 Tripping Billies
 Rhyme & Reason
 commercial song
What Would You Say (w/ Popper)
 commercial jam #1
 Ants Marching
 commercial jam #2

Probably the most distressing thing that happened was when they cut off
'The Best Of What's Around', which is one of my favorite songs. I was just
listening to the BOWA version from Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel 10/9/94 and it
doesn't get much better. Anyway, I just thought I would comment on the House
Of Commercials, I mean, the House Of Blues. Let me know what you all thought
 of the show (personally).
If anyone has the actual show on tape (as in you were there and taped
it, or have access to such a tape), I would love to hear from you. I am just
curious to what was actually played, etc.

Well, get back to me with any comments, etc. I would love to hear some
other opinions from fan(atics) like myself. I guess I'll talk to you all
 later...

PS- Get in touch about possible trades. I have about 60 - 70 hours of DMB
and am looking to see what people have to offer. TTYL...

 Hello,

I've also got spotlight as a filler from 12-9-92, if that is any help. I'm
sending along my list if you want to trade.

Never have I been so affected by music.

Never been to a Dead show, have ya?

   Last Tuesday, I witnessed the
Dave Matthews Band for the very first time. In fact, before this conert,
I had heard "What Would You Say" on the radio one time, and that was all I
  knew of the band.

Hmmm...why did you go to the concert, then? Big Big Head Todd fan?
Or was it those insert sarcasm oh-so-excellent Ugly Americans end
sarcasm? Most people I know wouldn't go to a concert by a group that
they'd only heard one song by...of course, I'd heard NOTHING by DMB when I
went to my first show in Charlottesville back in June, 1993...of course,
they didn't have a CD out then, yet, either...

(If it isn't obvious to you by now, I'm new to the list.
  Hi, I'm Amanda.)

Hello, Amanda...welcome to minarets. Beware of freaks here.

During the course of that concert, I fell in love with
  their music.

Their music tends to do that to people...

As Leroi's (or is it Le Roi?) sax and Boyd's violin
intertwined and reached a feverish pitch, I thought my heart would explode.

You might want to get checked out for congenital heart disease...it's
a killer of young people, especially atheletes :-)

The concert was fantastique! If anyone wants to talk about the Fort Wayne
show or has words of wisdom for someone, whose eyes have just been opened
up to Dave, please post. Thanks guys and gals. :)

I'm gonna do you a favor, Amanda...I don't know if you were on the list
as of 2 am Wednesday morning, so I'm gonna forward you the review I posted
after I got back here from the show. I was in the 5th row, wearing a
Roanoke College tshirt and a ND cap. Apparently only 1 other person from
the net was at the show, since I posted it and no one else has bothered
to comment (besides you) about the sheer intensity of the show. If you
find anyone with a tape of this show, I beg of you to get it for me.
I have some good DMB and lots of live Dead to trade, or I can start you
up with your own collection...tapelist available on request. I am glad
you enjoyed the show...I took a bunch of folks to their first DMB show,
and they were blown away as well. Me too, even though it was my 3rd show.

in the last couple of weeks i've noticed a tremendous influx of new memebers to

with are the cluebies - newbies who have no clue and like to show it. so for
all you newbies out there who are wondering if you fit the category of cluebie,
 read on.

-you SHOUT for a tape of the show you saw just ten hours ago.

-you admit you are a newbie to this net but not to dave band because you've
been listening to them ever since the "what would you say" video came out.

-you ask if the bass players name is Stephan or Ste Phan (the answer should be
in the albums' liner notes, by the way.).

-you are willing to pay lots of money and all your dave bootleg CD's to get
tickets to tomorrow night's sold-out show.

-you ask about dave's sexual orientation.

-you ask who Anne is after it had been answered the day before (this goes for
asking any question that was answered the previous day.)

-you claim to have had a religious experience crowd surfing to "lover lay

-you want to know what the word "newbie" means.

-you're posting stupid shit like this to minarets when you should be studying
for a final you have in three hours...like me.

Be nice. I agree, not many people would go to a show when they had only
heard one song by the band, but it happens. When I saw DMB for the first
time on 1/30/95 at Lupo's, I had heard NOTHING by them, but I went and it
was the most incredible display of sheer talent I have ever seen.
Instantly DMB became my favorite band. So have a heart for us new to the
 experience.

surprised to see me. Wow i guess i made an impression. I wonder if it was
good? After 'bout four songs the five girls in front middle left!!! Morons.
Probably had to go home and make their high school curfew. JUST KIDDING!!!!
I was glad they left though cause PAT and I moved right in front during
Minarets. The people in the second row were really cool, over all a great
crowd. As soon as the seats opened up they yelled at me to move over, cause i
was groovin so hard, i guess. So there Pat and i were in the best two seats on
a little JIMITHING and enjoying life. Personal "HIGH" note of the night.
When the band was pondering what to say i yelled out Jimithing cause i was
talking to Dave bout that in cleveland and he went right into it. I know he
was probably going to play it anyway, but i would like to think it was for me.
Dave had a great time and the encore was sweet. A cover of Bonnie Rait and
then nature into tripping. I didn;t think i would know what to say but as
usual i wrote a shit load. If you read it i hope you enjoyed, cause i DIDS!!
Good bit of dave talk, and i gave a tape of DAVMALTATIONS to Matt Need the
manager of BHT to give to Dave. i did not get to talk to dave afterwards, had
to drive back three hours to cincy after dropping my sister off in Miami. If i
could of hung out after warsd for a while i could have died content with only a
few regrets. I think the show last night was better than making love.

I AM GETTING A COPY OF THIS KILLER SHOW AND WILL SUPPLY THE COPY I GET FOR A
TREE IF ANYONE HAS THE EQUIPMENT AND TIME TO START ONE, POST ME PERSONALLY.

Got to meet PAT, John, and DAN. If you know em there all cool, and we were
lucky enough to see a great show. For me that is the end of my DMB tour. Three
shows in one and a half weeks plus i get to see House of Blues tonight.
WATHCH IT, eventhough i shouldn't have to tell anybody to. If someone would
please post me the rest of the dates personally i would much appreciate it i

To the question that FIN asked. No those are NOT bowling shoes that dave
wears. He has a little more class than that. If you wear bowling shoes, and
have class post me so i know someone who wears bowling shoes and has class. I
always thought they were a nice dress shoe from the crowd, but when i talked to
him and looked at his shoes, (i do not know why i looked at his shoes?) they
were a heavy leather but comfortable looking shoe. They are three different
colors, i think, an orange a brown, and a green, all pretty neutral. If that
means something else i am not an art guy. They were wild yet really cool. I
asked him where he got them and he said in a split second. NEW YORK, and he
rattled off the store name and the street it was on. To say the least he likes
his shoes. Wow, are we obsessed(or I) talking about the shoes he wears.

What the hell is going on with this net?????
I posted two days ago, I never saw the post myself but I received a response.
Posts never seem to get to me, some days I get no mail and I know it's out
there. I recall someone posted about the listproc being reconfigured but is
that the case? If anyone has any idea what is going on- e-mail me personally
with the answer. God only knows where your message will end up if you attempt
 to post it here.

I had one Minarets digest in the box today that included three reposted
 diegsts in their entirety!
This is the exact reason why we need a newsgroup; if someone acidently
posts a digest you simply move on to the next post.
Plus with the traffic around here lately it would be a good idea.
So what exactly do we have to do to get rec.music.dmb?

Never have I been so affected by music. Last Tuesday, I witnessed the
Dave Matthews Band for the very first time. In fact, before this conert,
I had heard "What Would You Say" on the radio one time, and that was all I
knew of the band. (If it isn't obvious to you by now, I'm new to the list.
Hi, I'm Amanda.) During the course of that concert, I fell in love with
their music. As Leroi's (or is it Le Roi?) sax and Boyd's violin
intertwined and reached a feverish pitch, I thought my heart would explode.
The concert was fantastique! If anyone wants to talk about the Fort Wayne
show or has words of wisdom for someone, whose eyes have just been opened
up to Dave, please post. Thanks guys and gals. :)

 Josh,
Wow, and I thought I was exited about the show. One of my frineds
who is a computer site assistant read your post and called me and told me to
 check my mail.
All day i cought people staring at me because of the goofy smirk I'd
have on my face just remembering the show, more than a couple of times I
caught myself jammin' a little in class. It was so random how I knew that
guy, sure I had Chem class with him and we probably bullshitted over
hydrocloric acid, but I don't think I could have picked him out of a line-up
before last night, I just love how life works itself out. God, I thought
Cleveland was phenominal, so I don't have a word to describe last night,
 except, possibly "front row-center".
My roommate, Shits (your not the only one with a screwed up
nickname) was supposed to get backstage passes, but that fell through and he
wound up sitting three rows behind where he was originally was. HE WAS SO
BITTER, he's a loser anyways but he called the show "par" and when I would
gloat to everyone about "front row center" he would automattically "punchin'
you were only down there for a couple songs." 6 songs to be exact and that
was six songs that noone came between me and the band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
         I'm all fired up!
I have to go to another show, soon.
Enough digressing, what do you need to ask me? I'll be studying alot
over the weekend and next week so I wont be far from a computer so mail me
whenever and I hope I can help you

 god love ya'

 Hello
Steve, if you read this I must get a copy of that Rusted Root/DMB encore
jam!! I normally wouldn't respond to you over the net and waste space, but
I don't have your address. Please write back...
Also, is there anyone known dates of DMB playing any where near Potsdam NY
or Albany NY. If anyone knows of any please write and tell me. I must see
 Dave!!!
I'd like to also thank everyone with whom I have been getting or trading
tapes with, your tapes are in the mail...
perfect they are musically. They really have everything. They are most
certainly "catchy" and theres nothing wrong for people to like them because
of that. Because once you start listening you can't help but see what
makes this band so terrific. Dave sings so sweetly and his lyrics are all
at once touching, uplifting, fun and inspiring. The same could be said for
his guitar playing. The rest of the band is just as amazing. They are
everything musicians should... they play with soul, and they're music is
beautiful and awe-inspiring. And as a drummer, I know Carter smokes! He
an all around truely incredible band.
Please, don't keep DMB to yourself... spread it around, let others come to
know what we do. Let them hear what we hear, and let them experience what
we do when we listen to DMB. They have given me my love of music back, I
 temporarily lost it...

  Hi.
I'm pretty new here and sort of not really a new Dave fan. I have
a song that someone taped for me by a woman named Shannon Worrell. Dave
is singing backup. She has apparently opened for Dave and the gang in the
DC/Virginia area. Does anyone out there know anything about her, like has
she played with the band before, where can I get a CD, where does she
come from? A friend of mine saw her open for DMB and immediately fell
madly in love with her- unfortunalty, no one knows anything about her.
If there are any DMB shows with her performing, I'd love to know about
them. I'm very much a newbie here and have almost nothing to offer execpt
  my undying gratitude.
Oh, amusing Dave story- This is one of those friend of a friend
of a friend deals. Anyway, roomate's friend goes to see DMB at roseland.
After the show they (the friend and his friends) end up somewhere that
the band ends up at. The kid was just floored by the show, by the way.
ANYWAY, he's satnding in this place and Dave is right there, alone. The
kid just kind of stands there speechless, staring. So dave looks at him,
takes his hands, kisses them and says "You know, we share something
really intimate." and walks away. Odd but I think I
'd do something equally weird if people suddenly became speechless when
  they were around me.
Thanks for any info on Shannon Worrell (if that's her name

Yes, that's her name. If you want the cd, you need to call 1-800-AWARE65 and
they can ship it to you....it is also on the aware II cd that they produce, i
can forward you info an that too, ok? watch for it!

 thanks!

I just saw this quote in digest 100... did Dave actually say "I'm

been with a smile, but can anybody give me the context, or elaborate

I guess I'll talk to you all
  later...

Me too, even though it was my 3rd show.

in the last couple of weeks i've noticed a tremendous influx of new memebers to
this net. now, i have no problem with newbies, but what i do have a problem
with are the cluebies - newbies who have no clue and like to show it. so for
all you newbies out there who are wondering if you fit the category of cluebie,

-you repost entire digests thinking that will unsubscribe you.

-you claim to have had a religious experience crowd surfing to "lover lay
  down".

-you want to know what the word "newbie" means.

-you're posting stupid shit like this to minarets when you should be studying
for a final you have in three hours...like me.

thank you, and have a nice day...

So have a heart for us new to the
  experience.

I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a special significance to Ants

surprised to see me.

If someone would
please post me the rest of the dates personally i would much appreciate it i
might be able to go to some more shows!!, and will post again about the
   possible tree.

This is the exact reason why we need a newsgroup; if someone acidently

Plus with the traffic around here lately it would be a good idea.
So what exactly do we have to do to get rec.music.dmb?

  Josh,
Wow, and I thought I was exited about the show.

If you want the cd, you need to call 1-800-AWARE65 and
they can ship it to you....it is also on the aware II cd that they produce, i
can forward you info an that too, ok? watch for it!

  thanks!

hjwise@unixg.ubc.ca Sun Mar 12 23:13:33 1995

Sorry to bring this up, if it's already a tired subject, but all my

all my digests.
What's up with the Minarets shirts...how can I go about ordering one?
....That's all.

Wait, no...does anyone know if there are going to be any West coast dates
in the near future?

-Hannah

p.s. What a momentous occation...my first post (hope I didn't do anything
wrong...helpful suggestions, not flames, please, if I did.)

roseland shrub

lono@brahms.udel.edu Mon Mar 13 00:17:57 1995

YIKES!!!!
I had no idea that this show was this popular!
actually, that's not totally true, but I'm sorry to say that the offer is
now closed. As the header suggested, it's a shrub. I took the first 40 I
got, cause I'm only financially capable of doing 6 2-tape trades. Sorry
if you sent me mail and your not on the tree (i think there were like
three or four people when I posted this message.

I would recommend shooting notes out to the branches who assure me that
they have adequate taping equipment. If I couldn't fit you on (I didn't
give anyone else any more children than i took on myself) then perhaps
they'll be nice enough to do that for ya.

I also appreciate the show lists I've received, and I will be inetrested
in trading with many of you after this whole thing blows over.

I'll be posting the final shrub later this week.

I'll also mail all the info each of you sent me to your branches, along
with any requests you had as to trade interests. It'll be up to you to
get in touch with the leafs. however, the whole mess, like I said,
will,be posted, so that leafs can track down and harass delinquent branches.

I've been warned that these things never work smoothly, and the smaller
they are the less room for error, So the idea here is to distribute this
tape across the country so that ya'll can make tapes for your friends,
and so on into oblivion.

I got the tapes today, and As promised they are beautiful. I wept. well,
almost...I practically cried because I was in NYC the night of this show,
but due to circumstances beyond my control, i was unable to attend.

anyway.

once I iron out the geographics to the best of my ability, I'll get back
to you.

*****no more requests will be taken as of 7:13pm Sunday, 3-12-95******

thanks guys, talk to you all soon!
peace peace peace

oh yeah, thanks for driving stories!!!
they're cool.

PROPOSAL: alt.music.dave-matthews

jsk591@lulu.acns.nwu.edu Mon Mar 13 00:27:05 1995

A proposal for a newsgroup devoted to the Dave Matthews Band was recently
posted in alt.config. However, there have not been any responses posted so
far, so I would like to help move the process along.

The Dave Matthews Band is a group which appeals to the same kind of people as
Phish. Although this may not mean a great deal to everybody, Phish has a rec.*
group which gets over 100 messages a day. (By the way, this is not a "The
existence of one stupid group does not mean ..." argument; it's a "The
existence of one valid, popular group suggests that another could be formed"
argument.)

If you are wondering whether there is a mailing list, the answer is yes. It is
called Minarets and the subscription address is listproc@moose.uvm.edu (to
subscribe, send a message with "SUBSCRIBE MINARETS Your Name" in the body). In
order to check on whether a DMB newsgroup would be worthwhile, I subscribed to
it, and have received 19 messages in a little more than 1 day.

1. Stick with the current mailing list and do not create a newsgroup
2. Create an alt.* newsgroup which should be called alt.music.dave-matthews
3. Try to create a rec.music.* group for the band. This would get better
propagation than an alt.* group but would take longer.

So I am leaving it up to the fans and to the alt.config'ers. Please do NOT
respond to me or to the Minarets mailing list (if you are reading this there),
but to the newsgroup alt.config.

(By the way, if anyone wants to post "DMB sucks" or "DMB rules," please find
another newsgroup for that. This discussion is just about whether they should
have a newsgroup.)

the dmb

dans@cloud9.net Mon Mar 13 01:09:11 1995

A newsgroup is definitely needed here - The amount of mail is just getting way
too large. Rather than complain though, let's try to get back to the true
purpose of this net and discuss the band.

Is the band better or worse since peter left?

-I was not blessed with the experience of hearing them live with him, but the
tapes I have heard with him jammin' on the keys just blow me away. He gave a
different dimension to songs like lover lay down and so much to say. It
really is too bad he left.

Why doesn't Boyd (and should he) sing on more songs?

-I know he does backup on WWYS and others, and this is good, but when he takes
center stage in Angel from Montgomery, they just sound so good I have to keep
rewinding the tape to listen to him again (is this bad, can i wear out a
tape?). Nothing can beat his fiddle jams, and he really does have a good
voice too.

Are they better when the whole band is there (dave, stefan, leroi, carter and
boyd) or acoustic with just dave and tim?

-For those of you who have not heard dave play with just tim on guitar, it is
truly something to behold. Dave's voice is good, but in a small venue, with a
calm crowd, it is amazing. The same can be said of tim reynold's skill on the
guitar.

Also-
My old nak died on me. Can anyone recommend a good tape deck in the mid to
high end price range? I've looked at Sony ES, Yamaha, and Denon but don't
really know what's good. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. I'd love to
trade with anyone interested as soon as I get something that will copy tapes.

I hope we can continue to keep this net interesting, informative, and full of
content (and FUN, please, no more insults). Anyone who'd care to respond to
what I've said, feel free to email me - or if you've got enough to say and
think others should hear about it too, post it to minarets! cy'all l8r...

DMB intreview on Chitown radio 88-7

pjuette@orion.it.luc.edu Mon Mar 13 03:13:52 1995

Just letting the minarets group know that Dave and the gang will be on
the Clamato Review, a radio show on Energy 88-7, WLUW chicago. the
station blankets the North side from downtown to Northbrook and out to
O'Hare. we will also be giving away DMB tickets for the thursday show
and have UTTAD CD's to give away. If anyone has any questions that this
group as a whole needs to be answered, contact me personally. I'll be
trying to get some answers for the incomplete questions on the FAQ, since
I'll be given access to the whole group. (a personal comment on the
minarets listserver-lets keep the posts to the purient nature of the
band, and not personal attacks, --- a newsgroup shouldn't have to be
established for any band, but each bands listserver has become so
polluted with worthless posts people just can't handle the sheer amount
of rubbish in their mail box each day IMHO)

"Selling Out" (heh heh)

kadams@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Mon Mar 13 04:01:06 1995

The Dave quote that someone posted earlier that said, "I am looking
forward to selling out," was from alternative nation when Dave and
Stefan were on with Kennedy. At the end of the show Kennedy said
something to Dave about them looking forward to playing at the Roseland
and that it may be a sold out show. In reply, Dave said he was looking
forward to selling out. Heh heh Well, needless to say, Me and Boofy
chuckled at this because of the somewhat ironic nature of the words. His
reply was so quick, however, that I don't think he planned to say it that
way, but who knows, Dave is pretty witty.... He was also a bit giddy that
night, as was Stefan. It's strange when someone who most of us have
never heard a peep out of suddenly breaks into a Madonna song,"My baby's
got a seecrettt!" Random. Anyway, I hope that gives a bit of context to

Ants Marching

Matthew_McClure@brown.edu Mon Mar 13 04:49:02 1995

A while back, I asked y'all for the story behind "Ants Marching" for a
poetry analysis paper that I was writing. While I received no help but the
response, "No story behind ants," I continued to write the paper simply
based on the lyrics. Here it is for those of you who want to read it
(sorry about the length of the message):

Dave Matthews' song "Ants Marching" follows a young man through his typical
routine of days, weeks, or even years, but the speaker does not idealize
the young man's lifestyle. The narrator of "Ants Marching" depicts the
young man's life and regimented routine as extremely boring and possibly
even detrimental to his well-being. He encourages the young man to realize
that his life is analogous to that of an ant, always doing the same things
in the same ways. The young man's vitality lies in taking chances and
living his life to its full potential, and the speaker desperately wants
him to see this.
The song's title throws into the audience's mind an image of an army of
ants, all stepping in unison, no one ant moving any differently than all
the rest. No matter where the army travels, each of its members follows,
but whom they follow is a mystery. There is no real leader to this group,
but rather, each ant depends on those around it to decide what to do
rendering the army a school of conformity.

The song begins with a happy, upbeat combination of saxophone and fiddle,
leading a listener to believe that Dave Matthews supports the life of the
ant, but the lyrics send an entirely different message. A young man wakes
up on a typical day, eats his breakfast, and brushes his teeth. He does
this every morning; he "Never changes a thing." This routine has trapped
the young man in a life of boredom, and even worse he has become afraid to
express himself because of it.

The second verse reveals a girlfriend, but while their relationship may
appear solid on the surface, below lie many secrets. The two "never say a
thing", and she thinks, "these crimes between us grow deeper." The end of
the second verse encourages the young man to break this hideous pattern
into which he has fallen. Dave Matthews sings, "Take these chances/ Place
them in a box until a quieter time/ Lights down, you up and die." In an
indirect way, Dave Matthews encourages his audience to take chances. He is
saying that if one hides their opportunities until a safer time, the chance
is lost. He alludes to the theater and even to his own performance when he
says, "Lights down, you up and die."

The song travels next to the home of the young man's mother, where he
"remembers being small/ Playing under the table and dreaming." The
significance of the table holds a special importance, for the young man
played UNDER it. Even as a child, he hid from reality. In this hiding,
the young man dreamt; of what, the audience cannot be certain, but the
fourth verse, gives the listener an idea. It portrays cars driving along
the highway of life. Presumably, the young man is one of these cars.
Around him, he sees "All these cars and upon the sidewalk/ People in every
direction," a very bewildering experience for a child. This couplet
contains an even deeper meaning, though, for when sung by Dave Matthews,
the words "and upon" almost become "end up on", placing the cars on the
sidewalk. This renders the image even more disturbing. The people
represented by the cars have somehow broken down in their monotonous lives,
lives so monotonous that they are analogous to those of ants. The extended
metaphor used by Dave Matthews makes it lucid that "They all do it the same
way," and because of this they are unhappy.

The fifth and final verse presents an interesting situation. It depicts a
chance taken, a change made, and it is signaled in the song by a rapid flow
of its lyrics. Someone, presumably the young man, "tortured by [a] weight
loss/ Program," is tempted to cut corners. Dave Matthews adds the
imperative, "cut cut." He compares the young man's weight loss regimen to
a position "On the fence" in any typical situation. Again, he urges his
audience to "Cut cut cut cut."

Dave Matthews' audience is left with a warm feeling inside, sensing that
the young man will finally realize the error of his ways and step out of
the mold. One is assured that he will no longer be lost in the shuffle of
the fast-moving city life. Deviating from his weight loss program has been
the first step in the young man's realization that life is the chances he
takes. Without these chances, he is dead; he might as well be another
worthless city-dweller commuting to work; he might as well be an ant
marching.

"Ants Marching" also leaves its audience with warmth because of its upbeat,
eclectic sound. The tempo of "Ants Marching" is paradoxical, and even
confusing until the end, but when one hears the last verse, everything
makes perfect sense. The happiness with which one is left is a direct
result of the lyrics as well as of the harmony. Aside from being a
wonderful song, "Ants Marching" is a beautiful poem, full of allusion and
metaphor.

"Ants Marching" by Dave Matthews

He wakes up in the morning
Does his teeth bite to eat and he's rolling
Never changes a thing
The week ends, the week begins

She thinks, we look at each other
Wondering what the other is thinking
But we never say a thing
And these crimes between us grow deeper
Take these chances
Place them in a box until a quieter time
Lights down, you up and die

Goes to visit his mommy
She feeds him well his concerns he forgets them
And remembers being small
Playing under the table and dreaming

Driving along this highway
All these cars and upon the sidewalk
People in every direction
No words exchanged, no time to exchange when
All the little ants are marching
Red and black antennae waving
They all do it the same
They all do it the same way

Candyman tempting the thoughts of a
Sweet tooth tortured by weight loss
Program cutting the corners
Loose end, loose end cut cut
On the fence, not to offend
Cut cut cut cut
Take these chances
Place them in a box until a quieter time
Lights down, you up and die
Lights down, you up and die

COLUMBUS VS. PITTSBURGH

fgg102@psu.edu Mon Mar 13 05:21:52 1995

hello all,

like to share a few things. first, the show in pittsburgh kicked columbus's
ass. dave and the guys were so much more enthusiastic and played with a lot
of intensity. one could really hear the emotions flowing out of dave in say
goodbye and warehouse. in columbus i think i heard the most boring
performance of dancing nancies ever (don't get me wrong, i love dancing
nancies live). something was wrong in columbus. this brings me to my second
point....the crowd. the crowd in columbus didn't seem interested in the
show until ants and satellite came on. many fled to the lobby and then
rushed in when the crowd roared at the beginning of satellite and ants. i
was very disappointed to sit on 70 for 1.5 hours and drive another 3 to see
a show which let me down. if anyone else experienced this sweet and sour
effect, let me know. the people i journeyed with felt the same way. hope to
see a better show soon,

frank

Although I didn't go the show in Columbus, I talked to one of my friends
that did, and he said that the show didn't seem as enthusiastic as some
of the past DMB shows he's seen. I was at the Pittsburgh show, and it
was great......it seemed like between just about every song Dave made a
comment about how "you guys are jamming tonight" or "I'm glad you guys
are having so much fun." The band really seemed to feed off the crowd's
energy, and as a result turned out a truly stellar performance. Dancing
Nancies was unbelievable, as was Lie in our Graves.....the whole band
was just so together. Overall it was a great show.....BHT was alright,
and The Ugly Americans were not very impressive, but DMB was sweet and
that's all that matters. Just my $.02

I don't know if anyone caught it, but Dave Matthews and his merry band
closed out Headline News at 1:30 am on Sunday Night/Monday morning with
Satelite. For anyone who doesn't know, Headline News is a 24 hour cable

If anyone has a quality VHS copy of the House of Blues show with our

spin a couple from my DMB collection.

Has anyone responded yet? I have a full version I recorded on my Hi-Fi

it's a good recording. It's a good show!

Did anyone else notice the non-bleeping of Dave's mid song mutterings?
At one point he turns to Boyd and says something like, "let's not fuck
this up now" My thirteen yr old stpe brother picked up on it right away
(hmmm, figures). He also informed me that the songs weren't like what
they were on UTTAD, and he didn't like them changing the violin parts. I
think he made the comment, the violin player is screwing up. Doesn't he
know how to play this song?!? And he wonders why he will never go to a

 Norwegian Wood

I once had a girl or should I say she once had me
She showed me her room isn't it good Norwegian wood
She asked me to stay and she told me to sit anywhere
So I looked around and I noticed there wasn't a chair
i sat on her rug biding my time drinking her wine
We talked until 2 and then she said "It's time for bed"
She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh
I told her I didn't and crawled off to sleep in the bath
And when I awoke I was alone, this bird had flown
So I lit afire, isn't it good Norwegian wood

Somebody posted before that the Norwegian wood is either the girl's house
or just lighting a fire, but in reality it is about the singer smoking a
joint after she leaves, if I remember correctly (I believe Lennon or
McCartney said this in an interview). Norwegian Wood was either a
nickname for pot or a variety of it (or possibly both). Hope to clarify
the meaning of the song there. And it's a great song which I'd love to
hear the DMB do someday (maybe they'll do it in Gainesville if they come
here).

Article

nmayer@pen.k12.va.us Mon Mar 13 20:13:12 1995

I picked up an issue of a little magazine called Creative
Expression because it had Dave on the cover. Inside I found a
really nice long article with some pretty cool facts.

Did anyone else realize that Dave was forced to play with his
knuckles at the 9'27'94 UTTAD release show at the
Amphitheatre.

He apparently pinched a nerve and couldnt move enough to grip
his pick. That is quite amazing

His knuckles!?!? my god.

Also, we all know that TB was inspired by a hallucinogenic
experience on a beach. But in this article Dave says that he
had a near death experince.

He and his friends decided to go atop a cliff to take in the
view, when the sand started to give way, everyone jumped back
except for Dave.

He went crashing face first into the sand below. When his
friends rushed down, they were amazed to see him up and walking
around.

Close call.

Hope you found some of this interresting, by now

Like I said before, I'm sorry if you didn't get to me quick enough,
however, after reading this, you'll know who to chase down for those
shameless grovels that we end up resorting to.

As I said, I didn't give anyone more than six leaves, since i could only
take on six in my financial condition, and I figured that was fair.

I'd like to thank random people for their help, and especially the
branches for helping me to distribute the tape. I treid to be
geographical, but there were no volunteers to branch from the West Coast,
so the West-midwest trades will have to grin and bear the extra postage.

it's worth it, the show rocks

anyway, here's the email tree.
I'll contact each branch with the mailing addresses of their leaves
separately...leafs, if you get no word, get in touch with your branch by
email...that's what this post is for.

by the way...if I fuck up anyone's email address, get with me

Re: newsgroup time is now!

acox@s850.mwc.edu Tue Mar 14 00:41:45 1995

 	people.

now is the time for the newsgroup.

it appears that uvm has changed their
configuration around so now when anyone
tires to reply personally to a message
  	it automatically
gets bounced back to the list.

this is WAY to much trouble to
always go in and change the headers.

Actually, it is not that difficult to respond to someone with this new
system...

To reply to someone personally, simply press 'Y', for yes, you want to
reply. Then press 'N', when asking about the from/reply address (or
whatever it is), then press 'N' again for not wanting to respond to all
recipients. There is also a yes/no in there for whether you want to
include the original message or not.

I know that this is different, but not that difficult to understand. So
for anyone who has had problems, just remember Yes for replying, and No,
No, No, so that it will be a personal response. Different systems have
different commands, but there is a way around all of them...

Re: the dmb

acox@s850.mwc.edu Tue Mar 14 00:56:43 1995

Is the band better or worse since peter left?

-I was not blessed with the experience of hearing them live with him, but the
tapes I have heard with him jammin' on the keys just blow me away. He gave a
different dimension to songs like lover lay down and so much to say. It
really is too bad he left.

I think that the band is definitely not as good without Peter. Lover and
So Much to Say lost a lot with his departure, as did several other
songs. His part in the band and in certain songs that Dave refuses to
play some of these songs any more (like People, People, of course, and
Spotlight - though my favorite version of this song is without Peter).
Of course, I suppose Dave doesn't mind playing them now, after SMTS was
played several weeks ago. Maybe I'll get lucky and see Spotlight
sometime soon...

The band was at its best late '92 - early '93. The quality of the music
from this time was so great that you still hear about the best dmb shows
as being from this period of time.
Why doesn't Boyd (and should he) sing on more songs?

-I know he does backup on WWYS and others, and this is good, but when he takes
center stage in Angel from Montgomery, they just sound so good I have to keep
rewinding the tape to listen to him again (is this bad, can i wear out a
tape?). Nothing can beat his fiddle jams, and he really does have a good
 voice too.

You've got to look at it as a special treat when you hear Boyd sing...
Angel is great, it's nice to hear him on True Reflections also. I think
the reason you don't hear him more is because Dave is the author of all
the songs, with the exceptions of the covers they do (Angel being one)
and True Reflections, which Boyd brought with him to the dmb.

The same can be said of tim reynold's skill on the
 guitar.

Of course they are better when the whole band is there, that's why we
are all in love with the music in the first place. However, Dave's shows
with Tim are amazing, and they are a nice break from listening to the
more intense, full band versions. Dave/Tim shows seem to be more laid
back and more mellowed out, just listening to Tim go crazy is great...

"Grass Roots Rock" (DMB)

stompkin@siu.edu Tue Mar 14 02:46:30 1995

Hello fellow netter DMB fans. I have an article from Sunday, March 12,
1995's edition of the St. Louis Post Dispatch that I will share some quotes
with you. Hope y'all enjoy it !!

------------------

A LOT has been made recently about the re-emergence of a new grass-roots
underground movement in rock.

[general information about DMB, who played with Ugly Americans and BHTM
later that evening]

But according to Matthews, taking the grass roots route was something he
had actually hoped to avoid when the group formed in 1991.

"At the very first, when we just got together, it was the understanding we
were going to do a recording and send the recording that we'd made to
record companies," Matthews said. "We did that, and then we got absolutely
no response. We got little bites, but really nothing. That was within the
first six months of our being together, and within the first year of my
writing songs.

"But what we did get immediately from the first benefit we played - I think
maybe it was a benefit for the National Organization for Women -
immediately, what we got from the people who had never heard us before -
because obviously they couldn't have heard us before - immediately, people
got up and started dancing.

"The more we played, the more that happened. But we still got no response
from record companies so we kind of just ignored that.

"It's been almost as if we've gained more success and more strength and
more power over our own musical creativity and the destiny of our careers.
We've gained much more power because we didn't let that phase us at all.

[Then, more information about Dave and the other guys that y'all know
already....]

RE: Shannon Worrell?

smj3z@darwin.clas.virginia.edu Tue Mar 14 03:44:32 1995

Well, Shannon Worrell is awesome. Saw her live for the first (and only) time
in January, with a sweet guest appearance by Dave at Crossroads (Old TRAX).
She has a CD out entitled "Three Wishes." Definitely worth adding to your
collection. Dave sings back-up on two, Tim reynolds plays on a few, and Leroi
plays on one. She is in a band that I understand is now called "Monsoon."
Kristen Asbury, who has also been known to sing with dave, plays percussion and
sings back-up. Kristen has an amazing voice. I never can remember the
bassist's name. They are touring around. Last I heard they were out west
somewhere, but I don't know. If they come near you, definitely go see them.
Well worth the time and the couple of bucks. I don't think the CD is released
nationally. I live in cental VA so of course I can find it around. Don't know

Wonderful break sitting at home spinning tapes for newbies. They should get
 out around the 20th.

 Later and smokes........... tom

She is touring with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones right now.
She will be at Crossroads on the 21st. That is in

Awesome copy of HOB show!

cumm@uxa.ecn.bgu.edu Tue Mar 14 04:03:18 1995

Well, fellow DMB fans, I am home on spring break now (please no one
make fun of me being at home!) and have been bored out of my mind.
My parents just got one of those RCA satellite dishes, and I taped
the House of Blues show off of it into our stereo VCR. That
satellite is all digital, therefore it is very close to CD sound. I
ran audio outs directly from the satellite receiver into the VCR, and
hence got an awesome sound quality. If anyone wants to trade a
boot or two of any DMB shows (no particular shows) for a copy of this
video tape, please write me personally. I have nothing to do and
would be willing to help someone interested as well as add to my
extremely small collection (one tape and counting!). Also, the DMB
is going to play a small concert at Tower Records in Chicago this
Friday. WXRT radio is going to simulcast it, so I will be taping
that as well. If anyone is interested in that, also, please email
me. See you all Thursday and Friday at the Aragon Ballroom!

-Mike

P.S. I'm happy to say that I know Joel Einhorn (the new Minarets
celebrity) and that he truly does believe... "Big Girl, Big Fun!

DMB SUFFERING FROM BURNOUT

pjuette@orion.it.luc.edu Tue Mar 14 04:29:22 1995

I bid the net a dissapointing message, but one that needs to be read by all.
Yesterday I posted that I would be doing an interview with the whole band
and would do my best to serve the net. As of today the RCA rep who
handles thier bands when they come to Chicago informed me that they are
cancelling all interviews, except for a select few. Those being the
Tower records gig and probably some a paper and TV deal. Our station got
axed, as did the LOOP, and if any of you are familiar with Chicago radio,
this is a big deal when the WLUP gets cut from promos. (To put this into
perspective, every jock to my knowledge gets seven plus figure salary's,
with the exception of Danny Bonaduchi) The RCA rep told me he had spent
the last few shows on the road with the band, and that they are suffering
from extreme exhaustion. They have been, for lack of a better word,
raped by the popular media. Anytime, your band becomes an MTV buzz clip
band, prepare for a total media rollercoaster. I always hate it when MTV
decides to put a band in the "buzz bin", because it too often ruins them.
It's a quick fix for a quick buck. There is really no other way to
descirbe it. DMB still has europe to do and several shows to finish on
this tour with BHTM. It is a shame that this is happening and I feel for
the band, but at the same time I am angry with the fact that our station
got the shaft. For those of you in Milwaukee and else where in the next
weeks, DMB will be cutting back severly on their public relations. I had
a hunch this would happen. It would be nice if there could be steady
growth as their was with Phish and the Dead (both relatively, but they
are huge now) they their wouldn't be this mushroom cloud of interest in
the band. Well, I hope that this has put things into perspective. And
for those of you who have observed a tired band on stage of recent, know
you know, but they are putting what energy they have into their shows.
(Did anyone else think that they looked tired on House of Blues?). I'll
still try to get that info for the FAQ if the backstage passes go through
(on hold as i type). Any comments or suggestions for this, contact me or
start a thread, based on the subject of this post and include this
message, so the newbies and cluebies will figure the thread out when they
join.
thanks for you patience

Would really, really love 2/4/95 Orpheum...

Harry_Hood@fourd.com Tue Mar 14 10:48:38 1995

Yo. I attended the Orpheum show in Boston on 2/4/95, and really, really would
love a copy of the show. I know it's floating around out there, because I saw
an offer for it a while back. Because I get mail I should've gotten a week
ago, I missed the offer. Poleeeze help me out. I have one HQ DMB tape
(11/14/94) and buckets o' Phish (including Halloween + 1st gen. New Years).
If you don't have the Orpheum show, but still want to trade, let me know, any
old DMB will do.
If I get a copy of the Orpheum show, I will tape it for anyone...

Please...
Steve

Help with unsubscribing

9484130@lewis.sms.ed.ac.uk Tue Mar 14 13:37:47 1995

Ever since the new listproc has come into being, I can't seem to
unsubscribe. I subscribed before the new list and now when I follow
instructions to unsubscribe, it says that I am not subscribed.
Furthermore, when I ask for the list of subscribers, it only gives me
24. What is going on? How can I unsubscribe? I need to do it because
I'm going away for a month and I can't leave mail like this coming to my
box. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

My wife called DMB's tour hotline last night and she said that after DMB
and BHTM are playing in the Midwest throughout March and April, they are
playing a lot of West Coast dates. I apologise, but I don't have their
tour hotline telephone number readily available. Does anyone else have the
DMB tour hotline number handy to send up to this newslist? Thanks.

Re: DMB BOOTS ON CD!!!

molly@ctg1.com Tue Mar 14 15:54:34 1995

Hey,
That is a bootleg CD--which means the band makes no profit from it and is
not properly credited. That is just wrong.
It is one thing to patch into the soundboard at a show and get a copy
authorized by Bagby or whoever. You are just sharing the music and that
isn't a bad thing. Nobody should make a profit from spinning tapes, and in
geneal nobody does. But it is quite another to allow a greedy jerk to
profit from DMB's popularity. That's why Keith Oliver ran the "combat
boots" CD tree for another CD (7.30.94) to dilute the profit-making possibility.
Just a thought for next time,

Molly

Setlist for KC

gkinney@s-cwis.unomaha.edu Tue Mar 14 16:04:25 1995

thought it could be! BHTM went on before DMB a big surprise for most. A
lot of people were just there for BHTM. After the Ugly Americans set a
girl next to me asked me if that was DMB! BHTM put on a good show, it
got kind of lame towards the end (too many songs from Stratagem), but
they finished with Voodoo Chile which was very cool. Everyone was
getting restless waiting for DMB to come out, bitching about BHTM not
headlining, who the hell was DMB, etc. As to be expeced DMB came out and
kicked everyone's ass! The whole place was groovin' it was great. Here

Best of What's Around
Tripping Billies
Satellite
Rhyme & Reason
Recently- (No Norwegian Wood Intro)
*Lie in Our Graves-
Recently
Dancing Nancies (Scorching Boyd Solo!!!)
Jimi Thing
*?Come Dance With Me? (This was in the chorus anyone know the title)
Ant's Marching

* I don't have any boots yet so I'm not sure on the titles of these two.

I can't wait until April 21st Springfield Mo show. I haven't seen it
mentioned on this net yet, but ticketbastard is selling tickets and mine
say BHTM & DMB.

See YA There,

Gary
