I think everyone should have at least 10 CD's of jazz and blues. BB king is incredibleJohn Lee Hooker is Bad Like Jesse James. Armstrong and Dizzy can wail. If anyone you like some jazz and blues suggestions e-mail me. I agree here. Jazz and Blues are the roots of all modern rock music, plus they just make you feel good. Even scratchy old Blind Lemon Jefferson recordings from the 20's and 30's sound great to me. My personal favorite right now is T-Bone Walker. For anyone interested in getting into blues music, I'd recommend the Rhino Blues series. Rhino records has a 15 or 20 CD series dedicated to different eras or genres of blues. (I have Texas Blues, Slide guitar Classics, New York Blues, and Chicago Blues). These albums get more playing time than most of my other CD's. I'm not as familiar as I should be with jazz, but I 've had a great time listening to Courtney Pine, John Coltraine, Miles Davis, The yellowjackets, and Bela Fleck (if you want to classify that as jazz). Oh yeah, both Marsalis brothers have done great work too. So, I agree with Shag, everyone should broaden their musical horizons beyond Dave Matthews and other hordesque bands. (although, I think that most of us probably have pretty wide musical tastes already). Check out some old blues and jazz music, it's good stuff. --MorganTop Permalink
Hey folks, The New York Times may have some of the finest art and classical music critics in the world, but thier rock critics are totally clueless. When I was reading the DMB review yesterday, I felt like I was having an extreme case of deja vu. Last spring, the Times' review of Phish was basically the same, it went to great lengths to try to liken them to the Dead, and described many in the crowd as Deadheads taking a breaking from following "band number one." I think that the reviewer yesterday used basically the same analysis. Anyway, I hope all are well. HamTop Permalink

and think about what you are saying. I have been trying to send this message out for awhile, but for some reason it hasn't made it through, so since most of the topics have been covered already, I'll do my best to throw in my two cents. About the newbies. Everyone is ripping them apart becausethey don't appreciate the old Dave. Well how the hell are they ever going to know the old Dave unless people like us help them out? They aren't and that's sad because we have the power to change that. Everyone of us was a newbie at one point in time and we never would have heard live DMB unless someone helped us out. So just stop ripping apart the newbies and make some copies for them, unless what you really want is everyone to only know about UTTAD! As for the sexuality thing and everything else that has no relevance on this net. STOP IT. Is it going to change the way you feel about the music? That is what we are here to talk about, and if it does, well IMHO, I don't thing you belong here anyway. When you are going to post something, THINK BEFORE you post it. Personal mail is called personal mail for a reason. Sure, we can talk about things that aren't 100% DMB, but we don't have time to read 100 posts a day that don't have any relevance, to well, anything. There are a lot of new people here and we have to live with it. They have just as much a right to be here as anybody else does. As for the newsgroup thing... I have a perfect solution... anyone who has access to creating a different net... email me and I'll tell you my solution. I think I said enough for now. Everyone just take a deep breathe (of whatever) and sit back and relax. Don't be so tense and before you rip someone apart, evryone would just try to help out one another I think the people that don't really appreciate the music for what it is won't stick around to long. I don't think I would want 100 messages a day about something I didn't like.... Would you?Top Permalink
Hey all, feeling that the author meant that they played "WWYS". If "So Much To Say" was in fact played, I would love to get a copy of this show. I haven't seen that gem on a tape in a LONG time. about it every time someone bails from the net. If you feel you don't want to hear from any of us, just go quietly. There is not a need to do that though. I'm convinced there are plenty of cool DMB fans out there, and it just takes a bit of work to find them. It is work that is worth the fight though. It's hard to deal with hearing DMB everywhere you go now, but it doesn't mean that the music is worse. Once the new group of "fans" finds the next cool thing, we will be closer to the way it was before Sept. 27, 1994. just e-mail me personally. Don't worry, I don't think I'm better than anyone just because I may have heard Dave a little sooner than some. house when I was younger. It turns out our mothers are friends from college or something. Drop me a line sometime if you remember (or even if you don't!)Top Permalink
Well, after sitting back and actually reading the past 10 digests I have a few things to throw into this debate, and then I'll be happy to resume my foreign lurking status 1) Take a hint from Seth and THINK before you post. After 8 years on the Internet, I see this is the most often abused rule. If you think, and take a few minutes to see if what you are typing then many more people will be happy. 2) What good will it do to threaten, "If you don't all shut up soon and start posting real stuff, then I'm going to have to unsubscribe"? PEOPLE DON'T CARE. That might be harsh, but if everyone here sends messages telling that there is too much traffic, and for that reason they are going to unsubscribe all that does is create more messages and there is a never ending circle. 3) People who aren't even subscribed to the list but continue to post. not subscribed anymore but I thought I'd add my thoughts..." and then they turned out to be rather repetitive of what was already posted. 4)This has GOT to stop. Countless people have said it, and it has not had a great effect. Think about your audience. I don't care if you are trading or looking for an address of someone. If 75% (i.e 500+ people) won't be interested in your message, then find some other way to send it. There was a message posted asking for Dominic's address. so look through it and get his address. Oh, so you deleted your last digest or you get immediate messages and you haven't seen this persons address? Then just chill and wait. The address will come to you. 5) Adding "Required DMB content..." at the end of your message about something else is bullshit. Find another way to communicate. 6) Learn how to use the list when you get on. This includes reading the FAQ and learning how to subscribe, unsubscribe, and what the topics of discussion are. In every society there are rules. Now some people may say that rules were made to be broken, but in order to have a functioning mailing list there needs to be grounds for discussion that we follow and people have not been following them. 7) In the words of the great Bill S. Preston, Esquire, "Be Excellent to each other". Don't flame at every little thing and wait to see what happens. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and we are interested in hearing ALL of them. Eric didn't like the Rochester show. Thats cool. I never read that this list was for the positive discussion only of Dave Matthews. And as far as the band reading this - they should know how Eric felt. Don't hold back - let us and them know how you feel. 8) Don't be fucking anal like me and number your points. 9) I think the most imporant thing here is just to read Minarets. Those who read it know what is going on and this cuts down on the crap. Remember also that there are those people who get the list by digest so it takes them longer to respond. Having 3 versions of the AOL thing posted was silly. Having 3 versions of the S-314 petition was even worse. I know that i've broken some of my own rules here (especially number 8), but we all need to chill and back off our keyboards and do more reading if we are going to get anything out of this list. In reading digests 79-89, I got about 5 or 6 posts with info that was relevant. Show reviews, which I find great unless 25 people all review one show and say the exact same thing. The other stuff can go and I won't miss it. And last, but most certainlly not least, here is my take on the NYT article. I think that we should be happy that this was the review, right? (oh boy, here I go again.. this is the Phish publicity debate again). Everyone here seems to be complaining about how big Dave is getting. Well if you don't want him to get bigger, then lets hope that MTV, Rolling Stone, and the popular press all decide at once that he sucks and then we can go back to seeing him at Trax. But what you can't do is say, "This sucks, Dave is getting big. I want it to stop", and "I wish the New York Times would write a good review" in the same post. Now I'm not saying that I agree with the review. It did have its faults, as many concert reviews do. But if it wasn't positive that is one less person at the next Roseland show (or MSG show :-)) and that is fine by me. I have absolutely none because this wasn't a personal message that I abused Minarets by sending out to everyone and tacked some shit on the bottom. This entire message concerned Dave Matthews and that is the way it should be. I've got my flame suit on.. so let me have it. -Noah Cole ------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ncole@nox.cs.du.edu N.Cole-3@sms.ed.ac.uk ncole@macalstr.edu | | \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ | | "Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die" - Dave Matthews Band | ------------------------------------------------------------------------Top Permalink
PM (Wed). I'm going to record it and use it on a DMB radio special that will be out next week. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone out there had anything in particular that they would like to find out from Boyd or any ideas or anything? You know? I would definitely love to hear anyone's input on any ideas or questions! I work at WICB 91.7 in Ithaca, New York. Each week we have 2 hours of just one band on Tuesday nites 10-12. It's called "Artist Only." So check it out if you're in the Ithaca area next Tuesday, the 6th(?), I believe. Thanks for the help! Please email me personally with your interview comments or ideas. feels about the dave mathews band. I usually refrain from adding my input on the net becuase I don't think what I have to say is very important. Unfortunately, I feel resentment building up in myself as well as others. I have no solutions and I only know what I read. What I see are longtime fans who have an intense love for the band and who are excited about how dave is taking off in the world. But, with an increase in popularity also includes an increase in fans. Dave is such a personal aspect with most people that their even their ego is wrapped up in the band. This may at first sound harsh but I understand the feeling of resentement when I see someone I deem a "newbie" flaunting his or her relationship with the band. I try, however, to expunge these unjust emotions remebering that there are others who are stronger fans than I. Also, these fellings do not in any way add to the enjoyment of Dave's melodious music for anybody. Try to understand "newbies" as lovers of the band with less experience. People will learn what dave is about( if that is possible) with time. I hope I do not breed any more hostility on this net by my therapeutic release. DirkTop Permalink
Well, well, well, E, Marianne, I hope you didn't hurt Mr. Sandford's feelings by criticizing Dave and the Boys... Poor ting, getting upset over nu-ting Hi Kysa.. don't want to forget you ;) Anyway folks, these guys are absolutely right. The DMB is a great band... best I've every heard/seen. But that doesn't mean if they play a less than average show that we should lay back with blush smiles on our faces and say "Well that was exactly like the last time, but you were great" That's like, well, faking an orgasm. Saying what you DON'T like is just as important as saying what you do like. Yang, you de man So, if this newsgroup is a place where one can only praise the DMB and not offer criticism, then maybe someone _should_ start another net, because thats about as healthy as, well, faking an orgasm. Hi, space and time where Dave is savored in a small bar with some close fans. good luck. I desperately seek a tape of the London show at the Borderline. He played a song which he said they pulled outta the bag for the first time and they're going to put it away and let it ripen for awhile - I think people are calling it Get in Line now - but I'm not sure if that's the same song.Top Permalink
I hope that all this fits into the DMB format, but i have a confession to make. I am new to this group and new to listening to Dave Matthews. Is that really so wrong? You were all new at some point in time, and I know that there are some of you who are new now. of the posts that I have received thusfar make me a bit wary of posting anything of my own. So i'm just gonna sit back, unplug my keyboard, and read for a while. It's a great thing that you have here, don't ruin it by alienating new 'netters and fans. ps-does anyone have a transcription of the nyt review? i'd like to read it.Top Permalink
As an avid Dave fan, like many of you, I have heard my fair deal of shows. Even though Eric thinks the Rochester show sucked, I thought quite the opposite. OK, I admit, It wasn't the best show of all time, and they didn't play for an incredible amount of time, but so many amazing things happened there, I find it hard to believe the show was flop! As we all know, Dave is primarily a rhythm guitarist. It shocked the hell out of me to see him hammer out a solo in at least two places throughout the show. After seeing Boyd in Syr. a week earlier, he wasn't as hot as he was, as a matter of fact, he seemed like he was zoning at the beginning of the show (I should know, I was right in front of him in the Pit). In my opinion though, the rest of the band was on fire. Yes there was an amazing amount of screaming girls, but did it ever occur to you that the band might get energy off their cheering? They fucking loved it!! As a matter of fact, Dave told the crowd that Carter said that the crowd kicked "fucking ass"!! At no time during the show was the crowd so deafening that you couldn't hear Dave clearly. If you want to hear Dave quietly, then lock yourself into your room by yourself and play his CD. It's true the setlists were very similar from a week earlier, but no band caters to the tastes of a few experienced listeners. I would of loved to hear some rare stuff besides So Much To Say, but I'm not weeping over the fact that Dave played basically what the crowd wanted to hear! Watchtower was amazing at the end, and it is a bullshit excuse to say it wasn't appropriate as an encore because it wasn't his tune. While everyone has their right to an opinion, it's a good idea to keep everything in perspective. Just because the show didn't kick complete and utter ass, doesn't mean that it was a shitty show. Like so many of us out there, I was just happy to bask in DMB's un-mistakenable light. Just my $.02, Listen and be happy :) Seth Goldberg-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-Goldberg@Rochgte.fidonet.org That way, nobody can capture me.....They can use the hell out of me, but there ain't too much they can do to me. They can mess me up, play the wrong note, they can play a C, but they can't really destroy a C. All it is, is a tone...So I'm gonna come back as a note. _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-Top Permalink
I read one post on this show, and it wasn't that good. While i agree with the comments about the constant clapping, high pitch screaming, and the "we love you Dave!" yells in the middle of songs, it was still DaMaBa show and that made it good, and since I hadn't seen a dave show since August, theset list really didn't matter. At least they didn't play satellite! (that just about made up for the absence of Say Goodbye). And to the person who asked 'bout So Much Too Say? i thought it was great. ps. so what if they ended with Watchtower? I love Watchtower.Top Permalink

If you're a newbie, you have so much to look forward to in discovering old DMB tapes (pre-94). Crazy long jams, total improv in all respects. Dave is the man! Dave and the boys are playing So Much To Say and Angel From Montgomery again- yahoo!! They should play The Maker also! I actually want to SEE these tunes, not see the show before and after they play them (i.e.: Syracuse) - I need better luck. I kinda wish - and I've said this before - that Dave would bring back his spacey delay effects on his voice and also Boyd should bring back his wah-wah fiddle. "That's Boyd Tinsley. Da na, Dat da na da na da na da na... That shit kicks my ass!" - Dave Mathews Lastly, let's be chill. Please type setlists in for the shows and comment on them. Let's discuss the tunes bro'; I don't want everything here to be tainted with flaming. Have a good one... I love Tim's stuff and have looked for TR3 cd's since for so long, but no one knows where to get them. Hey out there everyone- I was going to post yesterday, but my system crashed. If anyone remembers, I was the sad road warrior who posted her dismay after the horrible Boston show... anyway, I have recently returned from the most incredible DMB road trip in a long time. I was lucky and I got hoooked up for guest list tix to the Lafayette shows, along with being able to have a long ass chat with all of the members of the band(except Carter, who was really sick) SO!!! Here is me saying my peace, clearing up rumors, etc.... FIRST OFF-in case you didn't know ...THE BAND HATES HATES HATES CROWD SURFING!! THIS WAS EXPRESSED TO ME BY ALL OF THE GUYS. Stefan and LeRoi were very worried about the innocent people who justed wanted to watch the show who were getting crushed. AND, as for those of you who were wondering why if Dave hates crowd sufers so much, why doesn't he say GET THE FUCK DOWN, well - all I can say is, have you ever thought that Dave is too nice and peaceful of a person to insult anyone like that?? When Dave says, "Hey y'all chill on the crowd surfing, the little people are getting crushed, that's his way of saying politely, "get the fuck down" So, if you are waiting for him to say it, you need to realioze that it's not happening anytime soon. SECONDLY- for those of you who haven't realized it yet, the crowds won't be getting any better with time. Instead of wasting everyone's time bitching about this and that, make a short comentary about the crowd(1 sentence if that) and be done with it. I think there are a lot of people out there(myself included, no doubt) that need to realize that the way to enjoying a show is to either make the best out of the crowd that's around you, or go back far where there's space to chill. -NEXT- this is minor- claering up a rumor- Stefan is not from Amsterdam- I asked him, and he laughed and said- "only in spirit" AND FURTHERMORE- Stefan is not lame at all- he is a very animated person, who talk a lot and is really funny when you get to know him. He was really excited about having hosted Alternative Nation. Stefan is like a big kid- he's lost in a world that's moving way fast. He has a life, as do all of them, and he is shy when he 's never seen you-WHO WOULDN"T BE? It's kinda overwhelming. -For those of you who didn't know. the band is probably going to keep touring until September...but when I asked Dave he said that he wouldn't mind a long-ass holiday. I asked LeRoi about Lollapalooza and he hadn't heard anything about it- he said they'd consider it, but wouldn't do it if the bands wern't good. - Alex is right about the Germany thing. -***I asked Boyd what made them play Blue Water, and he said, "I don't know, I guess people just kept requesting it." SO... keep those requests request for The Maker, to which Boyd smiled and said, "Another day..." I can't think of anything else right now... except, the reason that the band looked nervous on Letterman is because they were scared shitless!! Many people forget that they are just regular people who have been thrust into stardom. I can verify this...from LeRoi's confession to being scared on Letterman to the way Stefan's eyes lit up when I asked him about alternative nation to Dave's confession that he had been seeing a lot of flashes lately. The band hasn't changed as people- the are just trying to sdjust to what they are having to deal with being who they are. IS THAT ANY DIFFERENT FROM YOU OR ME ( besides the fact that we aren't famous!!:) to anyone who is still reading, good job last but not least, I will say my peace. - don't waste our time complaining about newbies. Whether or not you people who insult them recall it, you were oce newbies too. I am not ashamed to admit that Ants Marching was one of my faves as a newbie(although True Reflections and Dancing Nancies(with no intro back then) were my top songs). I freaked out two years ago when Ants was played at the end of a show. I also admit that a few months ago, I didn't know shit about taping, but because of a nice roomate and kind people on the net, I was soon able to build my collection up to near 85 hours. Be cool to them- although I long for the days when I could just walk up to the door at the Floodzone on a Wednesday night and pay $5 for a three hour show, I realize that those times are gone. I love the band- I think they are unique and talented and most of all that they are wonderful people who deserve to have their amazing talent recognized. LASTLY****************************************** To those of you who feel it necessary to insult each other, please do so privately. I joined this net in October, and when I did, I found the A) setlists- remember these- if someone doesn't do it from your show and you know the list write it. It's quick and painles. B) tourdates-a simple list of upcoming shows C) **USEFUL** information about the band. This means things like I have written, not STUPID RUMORS. In other words, back it up or back off. It is irrelevant whether Dave is bisexual, Stefan is shy, Boyd is stupid, or anything else. Call me crazy, but when someone says shit sbout me(ESPECIALLY someone who has never met me), it doesn't make me too happy. If you're wondering whether or not Stefan or Dave is gay and you have the lack of tact to talk about it with 800 people on this net, then you should also have the balls to take to Dave and Stefan themselves and clear it up. If you knew them at all, you'd know that they are pretty honest people who don't want people thinking the wrong things about them. They are who they are, as are you, so stop saying this useless shit that is untrue or none of anyone's business. D) trade offer, newbies offers, or trees E) Funny messages, with friendly personals to each other- NOt USELESS INSULTS. Why watse so much time insulting someone you never know. When I joined this net, it was full of people who loved the band, not people who loved insulting each other. Most o these people have lost faith in what was once an informative group with a MAX of 20-30 messages and aren't around anymore. -I urge you, please think before you write. Don't waste our time with offensive and useless shit to the band and to us. -Don't get upset if you read an article or you hear someone blasting the band. People have different tastes- that's what life is about. Would you want your friends who said "I hate Dave and co." to be with you at a concert? Personally, I would rather be there with an appreciator(no matter how new or old) like my best friend, whose I hand I held while I was crying softly during an incredible Blue Water on Saturday. -IF people who you know and care about persist on insulting your taste, tell them to be onsiderate of what you love and to respect your taste, AS YOU SHOULD RESPECT THEIRS. -That's about all from me. Sorry if I offend, but this is the truth- take a look at yourselves and think about how are you are considering(or not considering) others. For those of you who are waiting for tapes from me, they are done and out. -Ben Sterling, please write -Brian Richards, are you out there? -Dean- thanks again for the tickets. -Fred-let's talk!! Fred is a wonderful person everyone - Cliff, my newbie- CLIFF LEBLANC- i lost your email address. You sent me two blanks, but your show is only one. Do you want another show? LAST-*********NEWBIE OFFER****** - If I can get a sick copy of friday or sat shows, I will tape for blanks and postage. -If not- the first 10 or so people WITH NO TAPES AND A TRUE DESIRE TO IMPROVE THEIR DMB SONG KNOWLEDGE, write me and, of course there's a catch, YOU MUST TELL ME A FUNNY STORY OR AN INCREDIBLY GOOD JOKE- IF NEITHER OF THESE ARE INCLUDED, I WILL INGORE YOUR POSTS. I am not a bitch, I am simply looking for something funny and amusing instead of all these hurtful insults. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH- Im done!! Take care evryone, and think before you insult. Anyone want to make my day and trade for Friday and/or Saturday? Post only when necessary.Top Permalink
All Along The Watchtower is a Bob Dylan song, not a Jimi Hendrix song. They have performed In The Eyes of The Maker since Peter's departure. Birmingham December '94 they played it with Phish. All Alog the Watchtower IS a Jimi Hendrix song. Bob Dylan gave it to him. "It's Jimi's song now." it was WRITTEN by Bob Dylan. will it ever be Dave's? -anyoneotherthanme ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =================================================== Dominic Sagolla '96 --Constantly Swarthmore College Craving Swarthmore, PA 19081 the Perfect dominic@raptor.sccs.swarthmore.edu ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Top Permalink
Minarets,\ If anyone has a copy of the show in Winston-Salem, NC about this time last year when Dave opened for Phish, I would love to get a copy or make a trade. I especially want the encore when Dave and Phish jammed for about 30 min to Watchtower. Thanks RichTop Permalink
It has happened, Bill Bellemy has, in the prime time hour, introduced the video... "this South African guitarist is taking America by storm... UTTAD, something to that effect. Also, after seeing the video a couple times, it looks like, to me that in the first couple of live shoots Dave's lips are moving sort of weird. -like they had to speed up the live takes so that it corresponed with the album singing. lastly, the women who is lying down, surrounded by people and says "WWYS" looks like the model on the front of the new Sports Illustrated... hmm. -ZacTop Permalink
Just sitting here translating a little ancient Greek and jamming to the band. I popped in my nice 8/19/93 Wetlands show with a guest appearance by Warren Haynes of Allman Bros Band fame. Great show! But, I have a question to anyone out there who may be holding the answer. When did the singing start in the outro jam of Seek Up. The earliest I have it that way is the 2/25/94 Sweet Brair show. I love the the "yeahs" and the undecipherable lyrics in this jam. That jam just really makes me want to dance around the room. The Wetlands show has an awesome jam, but no words. Does anyone know when this started? Sorry this isn't a flame or a letter that I'm leaving or usenet message. Just a question about the band that I was wondering about. I am feeling good tonight so I will offer this Wetlands show to the first five newbies (5 or less DMB tapes) who email me at DANIELT@TIGER.HSC.EDU. Ben Tanen offered it over the net a few months ago, and I got it, so I wil continue it on through the ranks of minarets. Later and Camel Lights................tomTop Permalink

Did Bob sign the song over to Jimi? Now that Jimi is dead, will he get royalties from the Dylan Unplugged CD which will have Watchtower on it? Does the Hendrix estate get royalties from the Recently CD? I don't know if Dominic's post was intended as a joke, but Dave himself has said it's BOB DYLAN'S SONG. It's so ridiculous it shouldn't even be discussed. He wrote it, he performs it, its his!! Only a few months ago, this net was devoted almost entirely to the music DMB performed, on CD and in concert. That's what I'm interested in, not how many times you saw WWYS on MTV. It's on almost every fucking hour, someone's gonna see it. If Eric Wald says he was disappointed, good for him. I was disappointed in Syracuse. Though the guys are always enthusiastic on stage, they play nothing new. They've played one new song since December of 1993, and that's Get in Line (correct me if I'm wrong). Yea, its cool they played So Much to Say, but they've done it many times before. The intros to songs have promise, but its likely they will remain only intros and never develop into new songs. Everyone worries about their growing popularity, but if they don't write something new, they'll only put out one more CD. I love seeing Dave and listening to them, but how many times am I going to pay $20 for the same exact show. I can listen to 40 tapes for free. Hopefully DMB will give the net something new and exciting to discuss instead of rehashing the same shit week after week. If you can get me the whole deal with Dave on Alternative Nation, you can copy anything everything I have. I have a bunch of crap on video of dave, but not this so... You hook me up, I'll hook you up. On video, I have the MTV news segment from a few months ago that ws pretty long, plus plenty of tastey tapes for you. So email me personally because I'm not on the net. Thanks, Groovy Beans! send to minarets@moose.uvm.edu Hi again I am listening to the bootleg from the Tower show 2/10 right now. The BHTM set is not so bad, they are boring to watch, but if you want something to chill to, BHTM works nicely. I think it is all of the minor chords. On this note, does anybody have the complete DMB set from this show or the 2/11 show? As you all know there were some 50 odd messages today. This made me think of some stuff. Do people really need to send five messages (all from the same person) in the span of less than an hour? Can we reduce the amount of mail or make it easier to weed out what we may not want to read? If you have some suggestions, let me know and I will condense them and post them. We should make a group effort to make the net more useful and readable since there are many of us who share it. My initial idea is to set some sort of schedule for topics, postings, grovels (newbie or otherwise), and what ever people want to talk about. Give me some feedback, it would help us all. I don't want to ramble anymore. I hope to hear from people. Feel free to send me personal email, I am interested in meeting some of the indicated 800+ members of the net. I have no nifty/wise quotes to put here just now. Later on, SethTop Permalink

I could own the publishing rights to Watchtower for all you know. Every time the song is played on the radio, in a club, etc... Dylan (the writer, not the publisher) gets the royalty checks from ASCAP or BMI etc... depending on which performing rights society he belongs to. When Dave recorded it, he had to pay the publisher mechanical royalties on every copy pressed. There are several other ways to make money off the song. confusing, I know. later, cooperTop Permalink
If you missed it, you missed a Madonna tangent initialized by Kennedy. A true lowlight of television journalism, imho. Also, there were 2 videos containing scenes of crowdsurfing, one of which FOCUSED on it entirely. I know some moron is gonna think that Dave thinks it's cool since they played them on "his" show. I wonder if he saw all the videos before they recorded the segment. Also, Kennedy brought up the "Neo-Deadhead" crowd crap again. I'm sure Dave and Stefan felt like eviscerating her right there. Okay, I'm a DeadHead, I'll admit it, but I know plenty of Heads who couldn't care less about DMB and vice-versa. Their music is not the same, and this whole categorization trip that everyone's on is so LAME. It would have been nice to hear some discussion about how Dave writes his songs or why they enjoy playing live so much, etc., but instead Kennedy chose to give us a lesson in Virginian geography (although the stuff Dave mentioned about "breeding with relations" in the mountains of VA made me a bit homesick :-)). What a moron. To think I actually got excited about the whole thing. Well, I have more to say, but I'll keep it to myself, for now. Hope everyone had a stellar Fat Tuesday. Today, DMB promoters were at the student center at both Columbia and Barnard colleges at lunch time giving away free cassette singles with WWYS and Jimi thing... I didn't see them, but someone gave me the tape tonight (that nice person who knew I liked DMB and thought they were doing me a favore! ;-) ) I didn't ask what else they were giving away/selling (if anything)... but I took the single and looked at it... There's a picture of UTTAD on it, and the announcement that both songs are available on that CD. I dunno... if the promoters come back tomorrow I'll tell you what I learn, but they are making the rounds at colleges, actively recruiting fans. I don't know if this has been said before or happened elswhere. Since I've been on minarets I haven't seen anyone else post about it, so I'm sorry if this is old news... it was just interesting to me that they came here....they want all us to fill up the Beacon, or MSG! And, though it's to be expected, too bad WWYS gets so much air time... it's probably my least favorite song they do. But that's ok... btw, an inside source informed me that Trey really likes Dave a lot, and jumped at the opportunity to play with him at Roseland... he'd been in the city anyway, for a meeting with Tom Marshall, and heard that day (from his mother's friend, who's son/daughter was going) that Dave was playing....made a few phone calls...and went! (Tom M. was in the audience, too)... he didn't bring his guitar, if any Phish fans at the show noticed, so he was using the Ugly Americans' electric, since he didn't feel like playing acoustic. :-) .....KysaTop Permalink

Fellow minareters, so I've had some time to think about it. As ranDOM wrote (see below), I think Kennedy could have asked some more intelligent questions. But what I disagree with is that the Madonna reference was stupid. It was just a random name that Kennedy threw at them, which actually led Stefan to break his silence and say "I have her latest album!" (I also think Kennedy's mocking of "Vogue" was somewhat humorous.) neo-HIPPIE, and asked Stefan what he thought of being related to Phish, Big Head Todd (ironically enough), and other HORDE-type bands. Relax, ranDOM, who are dedicated to DMB in some way, so let's just enjoy it! If you missed it, you missed a Madonna tangent initialized by Kennedy. A true lowlight of television journalism, imho. Just my $.02, Listen and be happy :) Seth Goldberg-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-Goldberg@Rochgte.fidonet.org When I'm reincarnated, I'm gonna come back as a musical note. I'm really interested in Radio performances and interviews. Anyway I'll get going so you can get on to reading more important things... THANKS! Danny Boy ------------------------------ Hey, I finally saw a buzz clip today that didn't have DMB in it, I guess MTV changed their minds and took out DMB from that cartoony buzz clip ... at least that might make some minaretters happy... it does to me I hate to see DMB on the buzz clip... alan ------------------------------ It's so nice to know that other fellow minaretters love The Celestine Prophecy too. Thanks for the time Mike c ------------------------------ I think the Celestine Prophecy brought up a lot of good points, but I don't think it was that well written. The writting and presentaion of the concepts or insights was overly simplified. i think you can get a lot of good out of the book, but some of the insights(like how there are only two types of people) aren't that valuable. I guess that's how everything goes though......you take what is good and can help you and forget the rest. Has anyone read the Celestine Prophecy self help book? I only found out they were playing NYC (where I live) on the 24th when Dave announced it at the Roseland show. Does anyone know how I can get TR3 Cd('s?) and bootlegs. I love Stream and You Are My Sanity. I think those are the only tunes of theirs that I've heard of theirs, although I think Tim wrote Lie In Our Graves or So Much To Say. Don't know which one, though. Can anyone help me? ------------------------------ All Along The Watchtower is a Bob Dylan song, not a Jimi Hendrix song. They have performed In The Eyes of The Maker since Peter's departure. Birmingham December '94 they played it with Phish. ------------------------------ I'm not familiar with the whole tree thing, but it's a good gen 1 tape. ------------------------------ Hey out there everyone- I was going to post yesterday, but my system crashed. Post only when necessary. ------------------------------ All Along The Watchtower is a Bob Dylan song, not a Jimi Hendrix song. They have performed In The Eyes of The Maker since Peter's departure. Birmingham December '94 they played it with Phish. All Alog the Watchtower IS a Jimi Hendrix song. Bob Dylan gave it to him. I especially want the encore when Dave and Phish jammed for about 30 min to Watchtower. Thanks Rich ------------------------------ It has happened, Bill Bellemy has, in the prime time hour, introduced the video... "this South African guitarist is taking America by storm... UTTAD, has a little South American harmonies, some jazz, funk, and rock." or something to that effect. Also, after seeing the video a couple times, it looks like, to me that in the first couple of live shoots Dave's lips are moving sort of weird. -like they had to speed up the live takes so that it corresponed with the album singing. lastly, the women who is lying down, surrounded by people and says "WWYS" looks like the model on the front of the new Sports Illustrated... hmm. -Zac ------------------------------ Just sitting here translating a little ancient Greek and jamming to the band. Hello everyone, been reading minarets for about a month or two and decided it was time to make an appearance. So here goes. don't need more tapes than I can listen to in a day since it seems like I'll end up leaving the same CD in my car for about a week before someone ends up complaining about it. However, I do have one show of particular interest if anyone has the Oct. 15 1994 show opening for Phish in Birmingham, AL. I would like the whole show including phish if you can. I was also interested, if its not to much to ask, in a copy of the Birmingham show from Dec. 28, 1994. or any tape with Halloween that someone thinks is particularly tasty. Thanks. drummer I have seen in a very long time. He can really kick the grooves. If anyone cares, a friend of mine talked to Carter sometime around the V-day show and Carter said that Modern Drummer had just finished an interview that should be in an issue in the next month or show. Its like a whole article and not some tidbit thing. My mother always said, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." and 2) You can't punch anybody through the internet so why bother typing loud. DMB Homepage. Its beautiful. Hey everybody! I am a newbie to the net, but not to DMB. I have seen Dave about six times at the Fox Theatre in Boulder in 1994 and i was wondering if anyone would happen to have any bootlegs from Fox shows in Boulder. I don't really have anything to trade - being a newbie and all - but hopefully we could work out some kind of deal. I am particularly interested in getting a November show where Dave talks about Pabst Blue Ribbon - I gave him that Pabst! Thanks in advance! See you minaretters in Milwaukee and Chicago!Top Permalink

I'm in the market for a new deck, and I have a question. How many people make tapes with a high quality dual deck or do most people use two single decks. Is there that much of a noticeable difference if a tape was made on a dual deck vs. two singles? Obviously cost is a factor considering two decks would run around $600-700. My most recent Consumer Reports had a Sony dual deck highly recommended and said its performance nearly matched that of their recommended Sony single deck. Anybody out there who regularly participates in tape trees who uses a dual deck, have you had any complaints? I guess I was under the assumption that you shouldn't be a branch in a tape tree unless you had two HQ single decks... Comments and opinions don't necessarily need to be posted for all to see, unless it might be beneficial to all who tape... thanks, Brian P.S. on a random note, The Black Crowes are coming to Gainesville and the ad for their show here said at the bottom "The Black Crowes strongly encourage fans to tape this performance." Never seen anything like that before... ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________Top Permalink
A few digest ago in with all of the flaming Alex Crothers posted that the dates in Europe would be solo. This is really cool because we will have a greater oppertunity to hear So Much To Say, Blue Water, Say Goodbye, and other great songs that they are not playing right now because of the time constraints of playing with BHTM. What I was wondering was if anyone knows the names of the venues that they are playing in Europe, especially Amstredam. I'm going to be there on the 30th and NEED to get tix. I would love any information that anyone has. Thank you and thanks for your time. Mike Wojkowski An American in Dublin C452-033@IRLEARN.UCD.IE P.S. Jeez, don't you guys think you're being selfish? I mean, I've been on this mailing list since the very beginning, and I'm all for a DMB newsgroup. This list has gotten REALLY huge, and a newsgroup seems like the logical solution to this. About keeping Minarets secret, well.. that seems really selfish. Isn't the internet here for the free exchange of information? Are we here to judge someone just because they didn't have the pleasure of finding out about DMB when we did? I don't get it. P.S. Have a nice day. -- Have you ever gotten sick and tired of hearing AT&T take credit for things they haven't invented? You will. (jazzbo@eliza.netaxis.com)Top Permalink
Fellow minareters, I just got back from the library (where I videotaped Alt. Nation), so I've had some time to think about it. Relax, ranDOM, Apparently you missed the New York Times article on Monday. I saw about 5 GD or Garcia references. I have a hard copy of it if you'd like it. A completely inane piece of work. who are dedicated to DMB in some way, so let's just enjoy it! Now I REALLY need some Dave, Jim Yeah, I'm enjoying it. I hope to enjoy it even more in a week at Fort Wayne. Dominic ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dominic J. MAGAZINE TO FIND OUT EVERYTHING THAT GOES ON IN THE CITY. There are available everywhere, bars record stores and it's free. It gives you all the info you need. Broad street about half a mile west of the center of downtown. Parking is right there. east(toward downtown) on Broad and take a right on High. Go for about a mile after you pass downtown until you see Hosters (a micro brewery), the High-Beck, Victories etc. and your there. 2. Campus. Thursday nights are a big night for campus bars, so they might be a bit crowded. If you just want to drink (and not dance) I recomend the Cornerstone, Bub's, Not Al's pub (NOT Not Al's Rockers) and the Bier Stube. All four are within two blocks of each other on High Street. When leaving Vet's go up to High and take a left. Continue on High for about 3 or four miles and you wont be able to miss campus. pride mail me back and I'll try to help, and I'll see you all at the shows. (punchin') pat.Top Permalink
I was watching Alternative Nation last nite, and for the most part I feel it was pretty cool. I esp. like when they jumped on her right off the bat about dumb questions... I know it was just a joke all around, but it made me think that Dave new nothing all too relevant would be asked. Of course I would have liked more probing questions but what do you expect from MTV? If anyone is interested in doing some trading Please let me know. I posted I am really interested in getting a massive collection so anyone interested please get back to me... I'll be more than happy to send the tapes (exectly the ones you need or suggest) return postage etc... One last thing... I feel BHTM are a great band...I know this isn't the BHTM net, but why can't we support other bands we think are good? Lets help each other out, ya know? I think they're are a damn fine band if for nothing else because they don't sound like all the other bands out there... well, at least not like MOST of the other bands out there. really need DBM music!!! Please be generous and send a boy whose starving for some great music some tapes!!! Thank You! "I've got bugs in my head"-Edward Danny BoyTop Permalink
Howdy, of this from being on several of the nets. I just wanted to reafh a lot of people. I have a question on taping euqipment. patch into the soundboard with a tapedeck of some sort and record the show that way. I am looking for more specifics on how to accomplish this, specifically what euipment is needed. Can I just take a tape deck compnent off of a stereo system and use that? What kind of wires do I need? What is a soundpatch. A couple of my friends are in bands and I was looking ot tape a few shows, or maybe even some other shows given the chance and I am in need of this information. Thank you in advance for any responses. I appreciate it. Laters, BrettTop Permalink

well here we go again, i posted yesterday that tix would be on sale today but there not....they claim to be hammering out all the details as fast as possible, but that,s not very fast in this here neck of the woods....the reason for change of venue was the jaycees would not allow alcohol at fairgrounds, so the show is now being held at airport, alcohol will be sold on the grounds. no coolers the word is now that tix will be sold in the next few days, i'll let everyone know as soon as i hear something....so i guess we'll all have to have a little patience see ya, alanTop Permalink
Hello there- Dave Mathews bootleg to my name. I am not a new fan, it is just that I am living in Bloomington, IN where it appears that Dave is just a fad if he is anything. I am a huge fan. I have seen him three times in the past week (Roseland both nights, and Cincinatti). I do not have much to trade up with. I have access to enough Phish and Dead Bootlegs to kill a man. I also have figured out almost every single DMB song that is on any of the three albums on guitar. right arm for the Roseland show with Trey and Popper). If you are a kind sould and wouldn't mind just letting me send you a couple of blank tapes, I would apreciate it. Or, name a Phish show and I will see what I can do. p.s. Hope this works, this is my first message.Top Permalink
well, my mail server went down today, so i did not get any mail. if anyone tried to get in touch with me, please resend. thanks ryanTop Permalink
Two single decks are almost always better than one dual. The dual decks are generally of lower quality and do not allow many of the features of two singles. With two single decks you can adjust the signal level on the tape you are creating which you can rarely do with a dual deck. There are also few 3-head dual decks (3 heads allows you to listen to the actual recording on the tape as you make it. This can be significantly different than the signal being sent to the recorder). If you want a good taping system, be sure that the deck you will record with has 3 heads, the playback deck can have 2. Bias tones for adjusting the bias for recording is also very nice. When buying, look at the frequency range of the deck as well as the wow & flutter. A wider frequency range is, of course, better. But beware of misleading numbers; I think most companies list their range as 3dB points, others list their range in all sorts of ways. Wow & flutter should be low. Many people I know stay away from Sony decks. Their quality for the dollar is often not as good as others. Of course I ended up buying one anyway because I found a floor model of a nice deck at a going out deck at the time). Denons are generally good. Aiwa used to have problems with reliability, but I think they've fixed that now. Nakamichis are very good but even more expensive. I've been happy with my Denon 710 and my Sony 611S (? I'm not sure of the model number but it has 3 heads, bias tones, and Dolby S). Bruce WillnerTop Permalink

boys girls, animals... well well well. i need a bit of a break...those of you who admonished me for goofing with personal stuff on the net....fine. you're right...but i find it hard to believe you bag on me when 90% of messages are about the first time someone saw dmb on mtv... the road warrior who told us all what to put on net and what not to...hmmm no thanks...i don't need a net where all i can look at are setlists and shit... i like human contact...so to speak. so personal posts only please...nothing on net will scorch my eyes for a bit... i feel so sheep-like leaving net for a while. baaaah. just to let people know...sending people posts being all stern and shit like you're thirty years old is really dull..(joe and laura, etc)..affect your best parental voice and say.."listen eric i really think this kind of post is detrimental to net morale...so please refrain from being so puerile in the future....everybody's happy...everybody's free...c'mon buddy...sing along!" to me, personal posts and flames make me smile and laugh...as do good show reviews, etc...so if people just want to read trade lists and nytimes articles, cool. but its kinda boring. peace for awhile. settle ericTop Permalink

Dear All, 1.March.1995 Monsters (BHTM) in a short 'post.' I think that the two bands are very different and should not be compared. BHTM has a bigger name recognition right now in the West and Mid-West and that is why they are opening on those legs of the tour. I have seen BHTM three times now and I thought that they sounded good every time. I will admit that I think that the DMB is a much better group and even though I like their sound more I still respect, listen, and support BHTM as a band. I think that we should support musicians that we think play good music. I wish both bands great luck in the upcoming tour dates. Thanks for your time. Later...peace and pipe...talk hard...Top Permalink
I can't believe I wrote this thing, needless to say I had a great time at the show and wanted to share it. Send me some personal mail if you even care at all. started here about an hour ago... I see the setlist was posted pretty quick, someone from Dayton, eh? That's where I live now, no comment. I had two second row balcony seats for the show, but because of a bunch of confusion I ended up going by myself. I was outside for awhile trying to sell my extra ticket, but had to piss really bad, so I walked around to the alley (not being quick enough at the time to notice people going in and out the side door with thier ticket stubs, to smoke I guess it was no smoking inside, huh?) Standing there in between a van and the wall I hear some lady guiding a truck out of the alley, and see a small open door with a big FIRE DOOR sign on it. "lightbulb over head" guided me casually down the alley and into the theater. Cool as hell, catacomb-like basement with the remains of a buffet, I grabbed a coke. Nobody was around but I could hear the music, I think it was Milhaus (my cousin roomed with the lead singer at Xavier) but I didn't recognize the tunes. I cracked open one of the pit doors and looked up to see the crowd and a BIG security guard, so I "walked on down the hall, and I came to a door" some closet with a bunch of fuses, noted it as a good hiding spot if necessary. Turned around and this dude in a black jacket asked me if that went to stage right, "Nope, stage right is up those stairs, I'll show ya". I had seen the signs :-) So I foolowed him up and right onto the stage, shit. It was Milhaus alright, they could have had Psychological Vacation instead, dammitman. I chilled out while they finished thier last tunes, finished my coke. I got a little bored once the band left, I didn't think DMB would be on NEXT. So I continued exploring, Stage left had a HUGE soundboard, but I didn't think it would've been DMB's, nobody was around to give my blanks to. Some chick said something to this dude about not having a pass or something, didn't catch it, but saw where everybody was going. Walked right into this fat security guard sitting at the entrance, of course I was coming from the stage so I said high and smiled and walked on up the stairs. Door with sign said DMB dressing rooms, I opened it and strolled on in. Dave was walking out of one of the rooms and into another, "dave" really soft got his attention before he walked in. "I said hey, I'm Charlie and Chas and, uh, we met you in Indianapolis back in Nov, I was waay fucked, up sorry about that." I hadn't really thought of anything to say, but reached into my pocket and pulled out a Mary Adam 12 sticker and gave it to him, "Here's a great band from Columbus...", "How's it go?" M A 12. So then he asked me how I was and I looked at him, and said, "Great, well fuckin' great now, things have been rough" Then a dude walked up like he was talkin to us and said Dave needed a little time before he goes on, come back after the show. "Oh I'm sorry dude, OK no problem, hey can I have one of those beers? Thanks, later." So then I walked on down the stairs, passed Stephan, he sort of looked at me like I freaked him out or something, but was just in a hurry I think. Then Carter sort of bolted by while I was BS'n with the Fat guard, and made the mistake of asking Mike for a pass, I really wasn't that buzzed, but when he asked how I got in I told him the truth, and that Dave said to come back after the show, but I had good seats, so wanted a pass so I could come back later, no luck. So I stood there with the Fat guy, Mike told him I was leavin' when I finished my beer, dammit. So I went around and nobody was lookin for tickets so I went on in. Straight to the floor, there was a big crowd in the isle so I got down front and slid in 4th row, then got moved over to the right side isle. "Lie in Our Graves" I was psyched and a little suprised. I was jammin half in the isle all night. The security guard didn't let anybody in the isle for the rest of the show, BIIG MF'r. The show rocked, but I did think that they stopped Recently short or skipped an intro thing or something then I knew, 'cause Boyd looked at Dave funny. Intro to Dancing Nancies was cool, what did Dave say? Like what if you had gone down instead of up, who could you have been. I think it was the Jam in Jimi Thing that I liked the best, I found myself groovin' hard to the Jams, Like in Jimi Thing especially. I thought Ants as the final tune was a good choice, because Cinci is such a conservative town, crowd was trendy, etc. I thought they really got into playing WWYS. Was it played anywhere after new year's except Letterman? They also seemed to love the crowd getting into the well known tunes like Ants etc. Dave played a nice long intro after announcing One Sweet World. I couldn't believe it was over so fast, they were gone, dude's were changin' the equipment etc. I had to sit down. Then I went around and the fat guard got pissed at me, so I went back in the show and ran into the dude that asked me to give Dave some time. He said that security guard was all pissed that I had aced his ass and shit and that I'd better not go back, but he took me up to the balcony. I had to meet Kelly, (remember the confusion thing) so I left. Drove home this morning. Damn this is too freakin long and crazy boring, if you're still reading you're as whacked as I am. I asked around all the soundboards if anybody was taping, but I bet Bagby was Stage Left, not sure. So if anybody taped the show please let me know, I'm also looking for 11/14/94 Indianapolis. Here's the setlist posted earlier Seek Up Recently Lie in our Graves WWYS One Sweet World Dancing Nancies Warehouse Song that Jane likes Jimi Thing Rhyme & Reason Ants already and promise to get a copy to you soon. I've always had problems with Sony, but NEVER, EVER with Onkyo..especially the dual tape deck. I agree that 2 single decks are better than one, but both the recording decka nd playback deck have 3 heads. Onkyo will cost somewhat more than Aiwa, Sony and Fisher (Price), but IT'S WORTH IT!!!Top Permalink
For anyone traveling to Cleveland or Columbus for the shows, here is a little info you might apreciate *************************************CLEVELAND******************************** known as public hall or the convention center. It's located on St. Clair and E. 6th. You should be able to park for free on the road, if you are willing to walk a couple of blocks. is off season right now, it's still a great time. The Flats is the entertainment district along the river, there are about 40-50 nightclubs, bars and resturants down there. It is less than a mile from the music hall, just head west on St. Clair until you reach the bottom of the hill, and your there, or just follow the signs all over town. There is a younger crowd on the east bank than the west bank. GRAB A SCENE MAGAZINE. It's a free music/ events paper that tells you about everything that is going on in the city. You can pick one up in any bar, music store or whatnot. The Gateway area(sportsbars) and the Wharehouse district(yuppie/laid-back/jazz bars) are also less than a mile from the music hall and there is something usually going on there. WHILE IN CLEVELAND.... Check out the Rock Hall of Fame, it's located at north coast harbor, at the end of E.9th st, less than a mile from the music hall. last night, but I have one question. Why wasn't it Dave and BOYD (or any of the others for that matter) hosting the show? And the have in this choice? Was everybody else busy? Is it race? Sex appeal? If you've ever seen Boyd Tinsley live and in person he is just about the sexiest man alive...Top Permalink
Well, maybe Stefan was on Alt.Nation with Dave because he actually wanted to. Stefan wanted some more exposure, or maybe the others didn't want to. Either way, Stefan deserves as much a shot as any, because he is part of the band. "That shit kicks my ass" -Dave 11/3/92Top Permalink
