DMB in Rolling Stone again...

PARISIGRE@urvax.urich.edu Fri Dec 9 13:18:10 1994

12-29, David Letterman cover) for the "Year in Recordings" article. Towards
the end of the article, the author devotes significant space to HORDE bands,
including a nice paragraph on Dave and an accompanying picture of the UTTAD
the DMB sounds like four or five groups in one..."

Anyway, I know it's been said before, but anyone who hasn't checked it out yet,
give a listen to Shannon Worrell's CD, _Three Wishes_. Amazing stuff. Well,
back to my beloved wordperfect...

HFEJP@utxdp.dp.utexas.edu Fri Dec 9 13:29:08 1994

Dave and the band will be making a personal appearance of some sort (nobody
seems to know if they'll be performing or what) at the Austin Tower Records
on the Drag at 4:00 on Wednesday the 15th. It might be very interesting to see
how crowded the store actually gets. . .

Good luck on finals to all.

man its getting cold out...i predict this is going to be a short but
bitter cold winter...damn,i forgot to bury enuff acorns...maybe the ant
will let me borrow some rice or something... Yea but...everything is so
serious around me...i'm staring to feel it too...where's the light in
this place in
time..........
.............over break i hope to fast and play drums from the
23rd to the morning of the 25th...no sleep,food...just water.....
yea i'll be kinda delerious, borderline insane insane, but its a good
cause...i will be playing this drum vigil for nothing but Peace on
Earth...nothing but Peace on Earth...yes, i may be kooky...yea, we
might be too far gone anyway...yes, chaos is probably right around the
corner...but i'm gonna' try it anyway...so if you feel some little
weird feeling sometime, check the date...maybe the atoms that were
disturbed by peace rhythms actually will travel...the rhythms really
need to travel on the backs of a thosand winged atoms to reach the
darkest places on Earth....

this is a spiritual thing obviously, so if anyone wants to join in
it would be an incredible experience...i'm totally serious.

...it will be very cold, yes, thats why the drum has to keep
going...grogginess will set in but delerium will show something
insightful and inspirational...ya'll might think its ridiculous i'd
even post something like this...oh well...you can stop the reality
postperson but you can't stop the electric postperson...bear with me
folks...winter is always a time for contemplation for moi...and this
one's already started out on the interesting side of darkness.....

anyway, i don't know where to play the drum for three days without
driving anyway as crazy as i'll get...preferably in Richmond so i can
go home and celebrate the day with me parentals on the 25th...anyone?
...someone out there might want join in the madness...otherwise ya'll
will ban me from writing hippie-shit on the net...well anyway like i
said by the time i think aboout what was just sent out it 's too late
to stop the electricity, so either hit D,P or M...it's easy and it's

DMB in Austin

pnut@eden.com Fri Dec 9 14:04:00 1994

From the 'Austin Chronicle'.."Don't believe the hype. Thanks, Chuck, I
try not to, but the hype on the Dave Matthews Band is deafening. South
African expatriate relocates to Virginia where he meets up with what
sounds, on Under the Table and Dreaming, like a New-Age-side jazz band
complete with sax and fiddle players. Then again, with Matthews' gritty
vocal delivery and the group's pop songs, it all sounds very Counting
Crows-ish. Fifteen minutes or something real? One way to find out."

Although it was in the Recommended column...Counting Crows-ish?
Anyway, come on down--tix are only $7!

The hotel idea sounds good to me. Anyone found one? If we put about 6 people

The WWYS Video and It's Possible Unintended Consequences

AMZENDEL@unca.edu Fri Dec 9 14:35:34 1994

I know that my subject heading sounds alot like a term paper title, but I
really thought this needs to be discussed.

If eMpTy Vee get's ahold of it(WWYS VIDEO) and they like it, we could see it
as snoop dog. I am NOT saying that the exposure is all that bad, but its just
that mtv seems to exploit the music they play. True, some of the musicians on
mtv see it as a career and their route to the rich and famous. I personally
don't think that mtv gives any shit about music, the quality of music, the love
of music, the passion, the addiction, the spirituall aspects. When they hear
good music, they hear dollar signs (Ca-chang) and not what it's really all
about.

Now, apply this to damaba. Do you really think they want this to happen? Do
they know that it really could possibly happen? Do they know how it could
affect them, as a band?

Maybe they want what I described above to happen, maybe it IS their goal, and
if it is, I say More power to 'em. However, if that's not what they want, they
could really be exploited, and not wanted it.

Take for example the Breeders. I loved them for the longest time and had the
opportunity to see them play at a show where only aobut 50 people were there.
However, "Cannonball" (if you have ever watched mtv, i know you've seen this
video PLENTY of times!) came out on mtv as one of their "Buzz Clips" and that
right there wasthe end of the breeders. People started buying breeders albums
b/c it was cool and trendy, not b/c they REALLY enjoyed the music.

Which leads to my hypothesis on the K. Cobain suicide. I was never really into
nirvana, but i could tell that they were talented and that kurt really had
something to say. However, everyone in this country began to see nirvana as a
fad and not as human beings really wanting to be listed to, really wanting to
have fun, really into music, and really wanting to share that music with others
and really touch them. This was Kurts demise, and I don't want to see the same
thing happen to damaba.

I;m not trying to be "protective" of damaba and say that nobody has the right
to listen to them. I'm sure in a few years most people are age can hear damaba
without mtv and without radio stations like 99X in atlanta.

What i really want to see is damaba beat the mtv system! They can be
"successful" without mtv and exploitive radio stations (99x in atl.)

I know this does not directly concern me, but i'm just concerned for the
members of damaba. I think that before they release their video, they should
really ask themselves A) What do we want to accomplish with this video?; and
B)What may be the consequenses of releasing it?

What do you all think?

Re: v-day, so far away...

2)to the best of my knowledge, the symphony will only be playing material
that is copyrighted by the dave matthews band which falls under the
same contract. probably one of the reasons they have a no taping
policy is to protect great 20th century composers who are very exacting

I don't know if they'll do this again, but when Bruce Hornsby played with
the symphony, they opened up with som e classical stuff. Maybe we just
cant tape that..

about their music, and wouldn't want it taped by some random joe schmoe
   or chris buford.

Now that's rude, Mr."I don't own my own deck and have to borrow my
roomates $5000 deck and I cant even make copies" Thompson...

I love the top hat idea. Think I can fit a Hi-8 camcorder in one??
hehehe..
Plan 2)dress up as bagby and go patch yourself...
Plan 3)we all know where bagby's patch comes out of...buy some black rca
cables and a sony Dat with the dimable display and plug in!!!
Plan 4)hire both DMB and the symphony to play in my basement afterwards
and tape that instead.

RPPRISIN@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Fri Dec 9 15:09:22 1994

I have a question about this subject. For fear of my deck, do they
actually have the legal right to take your stuff? I know most tickets
have a statement on the back to the effect "the management reserves the
right to revoke this ticket if...", but nowhere do they say that they
can steal your stuff. If anyone has a semi-factual response I would be
very interested. I'm not posting this to generate a thread where
everyone and their mother voices their opinion. Take it easy.

working at wolftrap this summer i saw many occurrences of "miss/sir you can't
take that in there"-- they will not (if similiar to WT) take away your stuff
if they get you before you get in...
they will ask you to put it in your car.. if they
find you with it inside they will do what our park rangers do they say
miss/sir can we have that... then procede to destroy the tape/film and say you
can pick this up at the conclusion of the night.... the also attach the
disclaimer we are not responsible for lost or damaged equipment-- this is where
some park rangers make out like bandits..

for what its worth...

oh, whatever. circles. rampant thoughts on clouds and mountains and

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Fri Dec 9 15:15:23 1994

with a headline or something. you have to summarize what you're going
to say and share it with everyone. but what if you don't know what
you're going to say? you wind up sitting in a computer lab pondering
the yondering. i wish they could make a mail.server that asked you the
subject when you were done.

at any rate, i shouldn't be in a computer lab right now. i should be
studying my sockiology. but i need to filter some of this crap in my
mind out so i have room for the study of socks. anyway, this could get
ugly, this could get all kinds of bubbly pretty icky gooey mushy
sentimental type things or whatever and i don't know what i'm talking
about so bear with me and all you know what i mean because i don't?

anyway,
i was walking away from my illustrious place of employment here at jmu
in an effor to fulfill the obligations of that employment, and i happened
to look up (that's a good tune by guadicanal diary, if you're interested).
and i saw clouds. lots of 'em. big fluffy grey things streaking along at
at least 60 mph. pretty windy here in the 'burg this weekend. windy.
ham. waa. nevermind. anyway, as i was looking up at yonder sky and
seeing clouds kind of moving along at paces that are somewhat unimagineable
for clouds that large to be moving, i thought, "whoa, i'm looking at physics
here..." i mean, look at it this way....all that water being moved at such
an alarming rate? 2 litres of water weighs 4 lbs. not that i'm some
european freak or something, but i don't know how much a gallon of water
weighs (all i know is that as a kid, spinning a five gallon bucket around
my head with it full of water and wondering how come the water never fell
out when the bucket went over my head would really feel like it was going
to pull my arm off...). so, let's leave it at water wieghs alot. and all
that water blowing along in the sky wieghs _ALOT_.

and it just kind of humbled me. very humble. made me want to hug lots
of people and mumble things like "ratigan glumphoboo" and take off all
my clothes and be a part of a nature that my awareness kicked me out of
2 million years ago. back to the woods kind of thing. hunting and gathering
and wearing a loin cloth and not worrying about the difference between work
and clothes and and all sort of like the wauroani or however you spell it of
the andes foothills in western south america. and then i thought beyond those
clouds, thinking of this one sweet world spinning around one sweet star in
an otherwise normal spiral galaxy in an otherwise abnormal universe where
scientists still don't know where %90 percent of the matter is and thought
about how much of an effect i have on it and i felt

but then i started to think about the awareness that my ancestors gained
many millenia ago, and that they slowly passed on to me and here i sit in
a remote corner of northern va typing into a fascinating little box of plastic,
glass, silicon, (sum the two of them up as sand) and metal, minerals what have
you and then thought about my freinds and my non-friends and the collection of
us all here together chatting, discussing, sometimes arguing or flaming,
sometimes just plain scathingly vitrioloing or whatever, but just the same,
thinking about us and why we've collected here to talk about......the dave
matthews band, of all things.

and i thought about what dave mattews does (mattews?) and how he takes language
and thoughts and emotions and and combines it with the physics of lots of
individual inanimate objects vibrating back and forth and back and forth,
whether under the arm of one carter beauford, or upon the tongue of leroi
moore, regardless, it comes together wtih the art of dave's way of molding
language and thoughts and emotions (hey, there's that phrase again) and
produces something in us all that brings us together as people who relate

and i thought about how this power and emotion moves us all and moves us
all through mountains and to each other and into the hearts of all ofus
who congregate together to the sounds of this band, or even of any music
that we all enjoy and just listen to for the sake of happiness and love and
peace and virtue and all sorts of other gooey mushy sentinmental words and
thoughts and stuff and figuratively moves the clouds over our heads and
clears the sky up and ....well this is getting too hippy-peace-make-love-not
war-and-fuck-politics-and-just-smoke-a-jimi-thing-and-keep-me-swinging'ish
so i'll get to the point.

i thought about how dave's music was moving those clouds over my head and
how we all move together with dave and his music and all and how we seem
to get along and all and all and all and all and well....

well.
well.

i don't know.

but it made me feel warm and fuzzy inside and i just wanted to share with
you all. and all.

i guess if we're going to ....well, if _i_'m goint to sit here and and compare
dave to the physics of the worlds weather patterns, kind of gives a whole
new meaning to the song 'one sweet world' doesnt' it. ?

i had anothe rthought. but it disappeared. god forbid me finding any of
'em in here in this place called my brain. in this place called 'me.'
a strange place taht scares the shit out of itself every now and then and
scares the shit out of the people that have the biggest influence on it.

a strange place indeed.
oh well.
i still don't know.

Random Thoughts

pwchan@mail.wm.edu Fri Dec 9 16:52:07 1994

I have now been on this net since school began in September and I have some
random thoughts about ways to maybe improve the net, which isn't too bad,

1) Limit the amount of talking about other bands. I love new music too
BUT this is the Dave newsgroup and lets leave it at that. Even more so,
try to limit the amount that you send messages directly to another person
through the net.
2) Don't reply to every friggin post. We all get 50 some odd posts a day
and half of them are almost meaningless replies to a random post.
3) Keep signatures on messages down a bit. They add much space to
messages, and frankly get annoying some times.
4) I too am going to Valentine's Day shw in Richmond, but don't you all
think it is a little early to plan your outfits or things in general NOW.
We do have two months you know.
5) And, most importantly, try not to be so harsh in flames. I mean, and I
have said this before, it's called FREEDOM OF SPEACH, look into it. If you
don't agree with a post, that is fine, but don't whine about it to
everybody else.

Now, on this note, I am going to send in a separate post to cancel the net
until after the holidays. I hope that no one gets offended by anything I
said. I will see you all around after break and I hope to get some good
trades of bootlegs going after then...

Rhyme & Reason

msweeney@muselab.ac.runet.edu Fri Dec 9 17:38:55 1994

Paceing in the dark of your room with a song on repeat helps you learn
things and discover things. Earlier in the semester the band's habit's
were brought up. It was brought up through the song rhyme and reason.
People thought it might be about dave's habit's. well i got a slightly
diffrent version. look the words over and listen. it's not now it's a
story from start to finish. ending with the death of the "charecter".
the person in the song suffers from self loathing (something i knoow a
bit about). The end up turning to drugs as a way to get out of the
reality that they are in. they end up getting the break they need
through death. Trust me i speek from expereince enough self loathing
will useually involve drug addiction and at the end a premature death
(this comes from someone who would be a junk addict if he could get it
and has been suicidal on two occasions the last very close). weather or
not the story is dave's story (he's finishing it then writing his future)
or if it is a freinds or if it is just a story, well, a few select people
know that one. just dropping two cents into the pot.

Hey y'all,
not DMB, but it's exam week and any news is good news). It seems that the very
fine, the not so famous (yet) Gibb Droll Band has had their second self
produced album, Dharma, reissued by none other than Bama Rags records. Dave
and Gibb have been friends for many a moon now and have often played venues
now that distribution might be a little better more of you will have a chance
to check out this incredible guitarists. As far as V-day, I'll have a deck
wrapped in baby clothes, just roll the stroller up next to the soundboard,
patch in, and burp the "baby" every 45mins or so. My God, it HAS to work!!!
Jeff, you suck for not responding to my messages, no cheese whips for you!
Dusty, have you gotten those tapes yet? They should be coming in any day now.
Let me know how the filler flowed, and kudos (I HATE that word) on the sound
quality, that's a great show you sent! Jason, same applies to you, great
quality! I never thought I'd get a show from Kansas of all places. Who woulda
thunk it? Well, my last two days of release before hell are at hand, I must be
off now. Ta!!

"Hey! That girl has a penis on her hand!"

As usual, for your convenience fire, tobacco, burn, inhale, exhale. Repeat as
necessary.

A few questions

LAW0001@UNIVSCVM.CSD.SCAROLINA.EDU Sat Dec 10 02:12:34 1994

1) Is the DC show on the 30th sold out? I remember scary rumors surfaced to
that effect a coupla weeks ago.

2) What is Allgood's phone hotline- I see that they are playing in Hotlanta
NYE, so surely they must have finished the album and are contemplating hitting
the road again. Any info would be gobbled up fast!

Thanks and remember the reasonable man, he could cause you a heap o trouble

The Zygote that will be a song someday...

jjthomps@teton.Mines.Colorado.EDU Sat Dec 10 14:24:47 1994

Okay, so here's some partial lyrics to a song that the band played during
the encore at a recent show in Boulder, CO. I don't think its a complete
song yet because basically Carter and Stephan just jam on the same riff
over and over, i.e. there is no distinguishable verse or chorus, just
random lyrics. Most of them thoroughly garbled...

....
....
now he's leaving

I'm gonna take my time

I won't be rushing anywhere
I lost my best friend against the wall yeaterday

Eyes, tears blood red

Talk to me,

-----------------------------------------------

It is a pretty tight, quick riff. And could turn into a very intense song

Trust me - this thing will be on Mtv. They went all out at the filming. I
mean from like nine in the morning until 8:00 that night. They even had to
push back the show a few hours, and drop Everything for that night. This
was a high dollar deal.

Actually, let me just paraphrase what Dave said during the encore the night

Well, we don't want you guys to freak out, but we figured that this is such
a nice room (the Fox), that Fuck It, we're going to shoot a video. Don't
worry its going to be freaky.

Well, I saw a show about Mtv once. And on it they said that the intended
audience for the network was 12 year old boys. Flip it on and it will
all be revealed. Nothing against dave, but I was under the impression
that his fan base was predominantly a college crowd. Which would mean
not a lot of dave on Mtv. Although, the same used to hold true for Live,
so what do I know?

When I'm not listening to my collection of tapes, I listen to KFOG here
in the Bay Area. They play a rather diverse selection of music, and have
taken to playing HORDE type bands. Just after UTTAD came out they played
"What Would You Say" about once a week. One DJ who played commented
"They sound so much like Blues Traveler," obviously not knowing Popper
played on the tune. Well since they came through last weekend, I've head
the song about 5 times! I don't listen to the station more than an hour
a day (probably less). In addition, I went to the cd store today and
they were sold out of the CD! When I was there last week, they had
almost ten copies. I live at least 40 miles from any venue they played.
Look out folks, I think they're going to get very popular very fast!

DMB tapes

BOBBSTEPH@urvax.urich.edu Sun Dec 11 17:48:37 1994

This is my first time posting a message here. I have been a Dave fan for
awhile now, but I have only been to two shows. I am looking for some quality
tapes from the September 28 (I think) at the Flood Zone in Richmond, VA and
the November 7th or 8th at the Lisner Auditorium in D.C. I would really like
to get these before Christmas, but I am going home this Saturday, the 17th, and
I won't have access to my computer. So if anyone who has one or both of these
shows, I ask that you please e-mail me at "bobbsteph@urvax.urich.edu" before
Saturday. I don't have any DMB to trade, but I would be willing to buy or
trade some of the stuff that I do have. I know that these tapes are out there
so please help a fellow DMB fan in need!! Thanks and I hope to hear from
someone soon!!

rather less technological form. So, start brainstorming on mic hiding, the

Not a flame, but that isnt true. The instruments are miked with condenser
mikes usually from above. There are also stage mikes. These all go
through the board, so a patch will exist, but again, we probably cant use

The Coachhouse is the worst place that I've ever seen a show. We had to
tip the host $20 to sit at the stage, and then asked to sit down when we
preceded to dance as DMB broke into their set. Dave even commented on
the "change" for not having people up and dancing. The show itself was
relatively good, yet the band was just not as enthusiastic, as at the
previous San Francisco show. This was obviously due to the lack of crowd
participation.

You do, however, need a form of ID establishing your age as 21 or more.
I'll be the guy with the Y95 hat who comes in for about 1/2 hour because
it's the middle of finals week. Write me and I can give you directions if
you'd like.

If you have a car and want three traveling partners (my girlfriend is

living near the Jersey Turnpike or 95, but I won't know until I get back
in January. I saved all your messages, so don't write me- I'll be in touch.

Video, Setlist Grovel, good trade offer

lippe@u.washington.edu Mon Dec 12 04:04:35 1994

=09I hate to be a groveler, but there=D5s really no other way to do=20
this... I don=D5t know all the unreleased DMB stuff, and I have dat=D5s of=
=20
11/25/94, 11/26/94, and 11/29/94, all of which have at least one song=20
which I don=D5t know the name of. These songs either don=D5t have the titl=
e=20
included in the lyrics (intelligble ones), or the song isn=D5t listed=20
anywhere in the info files on the ftp site, and hasn=D5t been mentioned. =
=20
So the setlists would be greatly appreciated for these dates.

=09The video will get airplay, it will be on MTV. Boyd was very=20
excited about it, and you don=D5t just hire the director of Aliens three to=
=20
make a promo-video. Evidently it isn=D5t _only_ live stuff. It includes=
=20
little artsy segments with boxes filled with different things and=20
whatnot.. Am I being vague enough? :) I=D5m just afraid that I=D5ll never=
=20
see the finished video... I never watch MTV... The band=D5s perspective=20
differs from ours considerably. They=D5re excited and happy at the=20
prospect of being respected in the music industry, being able to meet=20
people that they normally just listen to, etc... don=D5t quote me on this=
=20
stuff, but it=D5s the message I got.

=09I will tape massive amounts of stuff for anyone who wants to=20
trade HQ Dave/Tim shows. I have some local (Seattle) stuff, including=20
pretty much any Jambay date I want from their vault, Salamander, Ganja=20
Farmers, modest amounts of Phish, and although it=D5s pretty mainstream stu=
ff,
Counting Crows, Blind Melon, Susan Vega, Violent Femmes, and even a GWAR=20
boot... hahaha they cover "Detroit Rock City" by KISS.. now _that's_=20
trade worthy. :P

=09Last note.. I play a strat, and was just wondering about a=20
couple aspects of Daves stylings(tm), and whatever.. Does he play=20
fingerstyle? Flat pick? I wasn't close enough to the stage to see any of=
=20
the times I saw them perform live, but I guess from the recordings that=20
he switches between real basic fingerpicking and pick-strumming, with=20
alot of left and right-hand muting. The reason I came around to that=20
question is the other guitar question, does he get away with murder on=20
the accoustic? I've never been an acoustic player, other than some basic=
=20
slide blues stuff, so I don't really know.... Everyone I know who plays=20
accoustic say that the Chet Atkins model is a crummy guitar, with even=20
crummier quality control. Just goes to show how tone and feel are %50 in=
=20
your style.=09Thanks in advance, ERic

X-mas Spirit, please!

bmcclung@liberty.uc.wlu.edu Mon Dec 12 16:19:26 1994

I've seen many people do this, and I was always wondering if it worked. .
.so here it goes.

Seeing as how it is Christmas time and I am a relatively-tapeless newbie, I
was wondering if anyone out there in Daveland feels like making me a
whole bunch of tapes (or a few, or one) for little more than postage,
blank tapes, and a bunch of messages from me telling you how cool you are.

You know, it really isn't that hard to swallow your pride for DMB tapes.

Mainly I lurk on this net, read the wars, and pray for newbie offers.
But I've learned a lot about the band from watching, so I thought that
was enough.
Until now.
We all have Christmas break to chill and make tapes, so I thought I'd
open my big mouth and see what happens.
I will be waiting (with hope in my heart) near my computer.
Thanks for reading this grovel.

Funny story

axvann@minerva.cis.yale.edu Mon Dec 12 16:23:29 1994

This has absolutely nothing to do with DMB, so if you are pressed for
time, delete and move on. If you want to hear a funny story that will
convince you that as stressed and ragged as you may be in finals, things
could be worse, than read on.

Anyway....

A friend of mine was a finalist for the Rhodes scholarship, so he flew to
Seattle, his hometown, for the state or regional finals, I forget. This
guy's a true stud- Phi Beta Kappa, Chem. engineering major w Premed
requirements, varsity athlete, and a hilarious guy. So he's ready to wow
the interviewer, right?
After waiting outside with the other finalists for a long time, he finlly
goes in to the interview. The following are just some portions of the

History of the World Part I, where the French are revolting because the
don't have their own language, just a silly accent.

To top this off, he gets on the plane, which is completely full, except
for his seat assignment. The plane takes off, and as the descent begins,
the pilot announces the temperature and conditions in Denver. My friend
is supposed to be flying into Chicago- he's on the wrong plane- which was
somehow completely filled except for the exact seat assignment he had for
his real flight. Anyway, four connections later, he was back in New Haven.

If you're not going to the show, you can stop reading here.
If you ARE, however, it is ESSENTIAL that you TELL ME if you can make it.

1) Send me your home phone number, in case everything is still a little bit
up in the air when you leave school.

2) I never got any time suggestions, so we'll meet at the STAGE in Piedmont
Park at 3:00 (a totally arbitrary time, if anyone has conflicts or
suggestions, just tell me). I only know how to get there from my home in
Chattanooga, TN, so someone PLEASE post directions!! Does anyone have one
o' them old-timey BOOM-BOXES (the kind that runs on batteries, but you can
hear it w/o headphones)?

3) We'll find somewhere to eat near the Fox about 6:00 (this doesn't
necessarily have to be decided right now). The Vortex sounds cool, but I'm
still taking suggestions.

4) I guess we might as well go to show sometime.

5) I have no idea about the hotel, contact Alex AMZENDEL@unca.edu if
you're interested (either in a room or a party).

6) I'll probably go to the B'ham show (if my friend bought the tickets
yet), and we could caravan if we have enough people.

7) I know someone who MIGHT be taping the show, so if you're at the
gathering, you'll be the first to find out.

8) If you want to trade at the show, get in touch with me as soon as
possible (I leave Thurs.).

9) GET PSYCHED!! Only two more weeks!

Re: MTV

NebuIous@aol.com Mon Dec 12 21:12:44 1994

Phish made a video for Down With Disease
I never see it aired
As far as I know it wasnt on Beavis and Butthead
They haven't sold out or gone teenybopper
and the main point is THE MUSIC IS STILL GOOD!

1) Phish are nowhere near as commercially viable as DMB. A well recorded
Ants or Satellite from UTTAD would do very well I must say...

2) The DwD video sucked. Trust me. I saw it. I had a tape of it... before
I recorded over it. From what we've been told, Dave spent money. Big money.
and they're expected to pay it back with the money the video brings in... er
something like that.

Anyway, my point is that the phish video was horrible, Dave's video will
probably be right up MTV's alley... 'weird', 'hep to that youngster's taste',
and er 'a good song i guess' (in that order).

gosh the little girl from partyof5 is so cute!

Charlotte Gathering???

Dec show at the Grady Cole Center in Charlotte, let's meet up
somewhere! How about the Spaghetti Warehouse, the one with all the
old signs in Dilworth area of charlotte not too far from Downtown?
It's got great atmosphere, good food, and one helluva a wine and beer
list, but please don't drink too much and drive, hell, don't drink at
all and drive [ within reason].

there. At clubs, it's relatively easy, just bring in your stuff, and
get the immortal Bagby to plug in those magic wires, and poof, you're
on the board, but

a) Do we need taper section seats? If so, are any left?

b) When can we bring in the stuff? If we need to bring it in early,

Please respond to this anyone with info, as I'd like to get my
grubby's on another nice Damaba tape.

we're not going to have any clubbing around here...

STU_RCTHOMPS@VAX1.ACS.JMU.EDU Tue Dec 13 12:00:15 1994

On the charlotte note, does anyone know how tapers should proceed
there. At clubs, it's relatively easy, just bring in your stuff, and
get the immortal Bagby to plug in those magic wires, and poof, you're
on the board, but

a) Do we need taper section seats? If so, are any left?

no. there' still not the contingency of tapers for a dave show
that there is for a phish show. there will probably be roughly
10-15 of you there, but keep in mind that you will all be competing
for a single sbd patch, so bring y-jacks.

bring y-jacks.

BRING Y-JACKS.

also, if at least one person doesn't bring a power strip, alot of
you will be shit out of luck.

b) When can we bring in the stuff? If we need to bring it in early,
like that afternoon, where do we get in, the service entrance? Or
can we just do the club thing and bring it in an hour early or
    whatever's appropriate....

you won't be allowed inside until doors open, if it's anything like
lexington, which isn't all that bad. the hords of people don't go
rushing for the obscured veiw from behind a soundboard. :)

so just get there sometime around then...

UTTAD weakness

73KIMBERLING@CUA.EDU Tue Dec 13 16:15:04 1994

Do you know what I really can't stand about UTTAD? It's the empty tracks g
leading up to #34. Granted, if you're listening to the CD all the way through,
the blank tracks don't cause much of a problem, they just creating a longer than
usual space between songs. But if you have a multiple disc CD player and like
to play a bunch of CDs on shuffle mode, it really screws things up. My par
to pplayer seems to pick a random disc before picking a song off that disc, so what
happens when the player picks UTTAD, instead of working some Dave into the mix
of songs, I am more likely to get a short track of silence. I know that this is
not a problem exclusive to DMB. Many other bands have done this kind of thing
for about a month, so if this gripe has been beaten to death, I apologize. Also
if I am really far off base as to how the shuffle function works on my CD
player, I also apologize. (No flames please) Anyway, thanks for allowing me to
gripe. Back to exams...

I'd have to say the worst offended is NIN Broken EP, tracks 7-97 blank.
But a great disc IMHO

if I am really far off base as to how the shuffle function works on my
CD
shuffle/random is actually an ironic concept on a cd player. When your
player picks the same disc alot and never picks another, its actually
functioning as truly random. We want to hear a bunch of random songs, but
the discs to be picked at some kind of frequency, so we get a disc 1
every so often a disc 2 every so often, etc. which is truly random, but
more like what we want to hear....
p.s. my technical director in high school explained this to me so if
someone actually knows a technical explaination go for it..

Kinda makes you miss the days of vinyl, don't it.

I also find this the be true. Although I am not lucky enough to have a
multiple disc changer, the shuffle mode always has long blanks in it.
But, the effect of having the song title on the disc player is sorta neat.

Speaking of albums. . .has anyone thought that maybe, just maybe, they

is basically a benefit for a charity and the Symphony they could raise a
lot more money that way. Then Buford wouldn't have to run wires up and

V-Day tapeing

messierb@ucsuc.Colorado.EDU Tue Dec 13 18:51:17 1994

Are we not taking this taping thing a little far? Getting hot Dave tapes
form the board or otherwise is not a right we have, it is a privelege.
Stealth taping is not a thing that should be done at a show, that's how
we lose the privelege to get ANY tapes. And i don't think any of us want
that. I would immagine someone close to the band or management reads
minatets occasionally, what would they think if they see all this stealth
taping stuff? Of course I would LOVE to get a copy of this show, and as
long as we don't abuse our privelege to tapes I think we will get one.

Peace & Out...

Japhy

Listen to Phish, walk around and sleep alot.
