Lisner is sold out. Poop. wow, amazing how flames can spiral out of control here... haha. guess everyone should relax, smoke their mind a while. oh, speaking of smoking and drugs and shit like dat. personally, i say discuss the band's drug use if you want to. i think that many of them smoke (this is obvious, pretty much undisputable fact after the number of stories i've heard) and some do more than that. a little reefer is okay with me, but one story i heard involved something harder (not heroin) and i wasn't psyched. not because they don't have a right to do whatever the hell they want with their bodies (laws be damned), but because too many good musicians/ actors/etc. die that way. and, call me selfish, but i'd be very sad and VERY pissed if one of them died of an overdose. cause *that* shit ain't so cool... everybody loses. so, there's my $.02. i'd just also like to offer up my personal plea to stop posting the "i really like dave but i need tapes HEEEEELLLLLPPPPP" messages. if you're new, just wait until a tree forms and join it. i'm really looking for new and interesting music to check out. thru aru-net and my brother i'm getting some medeski, martin, and wood. haven't heard them yet but everything i've heard about them is wonderful. and shannon worrell sounds great. and everything. i know rusted root is pretty good (but, in general, they are much more redundant than dave and not nearly the god he is lyrically -- then again, who is?) jackopierce sounds very good as does jambay. could someone send me the address for those AWARE cds? they seem to be loaded with almost all of the bands i've just mentioned. if you hear of any bands that are groovey, let me know and i'll add them to my list of "cool small bands" and then i'll post it again. just a list i've been keeping for about 2 years now... peace and your momma, rediTop Permalink

Maybe I can help settle this little debate... I don't know thw proper term for whar it the song used to be called, but I have Dave's songlist from 10/8/94, and it is written as Say Goodbye, which if I'm not mistaken he also says on the tape of this show. JenTop Permalink
recomendation on the AWARE cd's, they're both kick ass (AWARE 1 and 2)... But for those of you who haven't heard of ACOUSTIC JUNCTION you are REALLY missing out... They've played with Dave before, and a lot of people think they're violin/flute/keyboard player is better at violin than Boyd... They jam real hard and I'd be happy to make some copies for people.. They're getting big up North where I'm from... at shows in new cities where the following is relatively small... But down South here (and places like Irving Plaza) the band should give the old timers what they want to hear... I to will keep my fingers crossed that Dave doesn't someday pull a Phish and have a video on MTV!!!!! (I realize this is a bit extreme but you get the point!!)Top Permalink

ARRRRRRRRRGHGHGHGHGH. we should put in big blinking bold type letters on the welcome message that the term selling out is taboo on minarets. DON'T SAY IT. DON'T THINK IT. did anybody stop to think that perhaps dave isn't as into the long jamming thing as some other bands? maybe he likes to play shorter songs and just feel it flow. if you pay attention to most of those long jams of yesteryear, you'll notice that dave is nowhere to be found, so perhaps he decided that since these were his songs, maybe he should tighten them up so that he could involve himself more. dave is not selling out. how can i say this so confidently? because there's no such thing. only selfish people who believe that the quickest route to success must be the wrong one use the term "selling out." and like someone else said, dave's had a rough 27-28(?) years on this planet, and all of our bitching in the world probably isn't likely to change anything. that's not to say that he doesn't care about his fans, or minarets.net. he does. but he just wants to do his own thing. and another thing while i'm on the rag, for all you people (ahem, ben) who want to complain publicly about how much the new, bigger minarets.net sucks, why don't you just ask alex to send you updates with all the new addresses that have subscribed and send every one of them personal notes that say "you suck." this isn't your net, this isn't your computer network, and for alot of people around here, that isn't even your computer. so quit hogging minarets to yourself. if you paid money to create this thing, i'd see the point to being annoyed at four lines of a post that asks who anne was. all you have to do is, if digestified, hit return, if not digestified, hit delete. for those select few who actually do have to pay to download messages, maybe now is a good time to digestify. now, obviously, i'm a bit cranky. it's 2am and i have to get up in 5 hours to go to work and then take a french test. waa. i'm gonna go take a deep breath now, get some sleep, and wait to see what sort of fireworks i've drawn on myself this time... ____________________________________ "it is indeed a great gift of heaven\____________________________________ __________________________________ \_________________________________Top Permalink
Well, anyone else notice a connection??? I'm all for [stuff deleted] I've noticed (big time on the Uva Ampitheatre show) that boyd is almost a full step out of tune at points, and only before the encore does he fix that. I know for a fact that he smokes--he asked me if i had a bowl on me at one point, but if you're getting so high that you can't play right, then maybe something should be done by yourself to fix this. There's nothing wrong Hmmm... the only time I've truly noticed him being out of tune was in the Rhyme and Reason lick. But the fact is, he still sings harmony perfectly well (the "Minarets" 'what you see...' line comes to mind at Roseland, a show where he was out of tune for R&R) live, and at least in my past experience as a musician, singing harmony WELL is much harder than simply playing in tune/the right notes. The guy is a trained violinist, no mater how fucked up he is he'll probably remember how to stay in tune. Getting off of the soapbox, Yeah, it is getting overused these days aint it? :) Ben just another memo from the cellar, ************************************************************************** * "I might be a mess * -- Ben Sterling -- * * but I try to stay pure" * -- Nebuious@aol.com -- * * -Luscious Jackson * -- New York, NY -- * **************************************************************************Top Permalink
I would like to take this moment to point out that I IN NO WAY MEANT TO INSINUATE THAT BOYD IS GETTING TOO FUCKED UP TO PLAY. I just merely meant that when drugs interfere with the music they make, then, maybe it's time for them to change that fact. I apologize to those I may have offended, but my point remains the same... Anyway, anyone have any info on that "new song" they soundchecked the other night??? Is it "drive in, drive out"??? Or maybe a reworking of Spotlight??? Oh well... Wade people off... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Smile, reach, hold. Reach, grasp, cry. Grasp in desperation. The Candle's Flame falls to darkness. i've been reading all these posts about how the crowds at dmb shows suck, & i thought i'd jsut add my own opinion. i saw them in chicago (for the first time) on oct.28, & i had a great time. but -- i do think that the crowd kinda sucked. for a while i was down on the floor, & people all around me just wouldn't stop talking about all they had drank & all the dope they had smoked, & frankly, i jsut don't care. i'm not going to rip on people who sing all the lyrics along with dave, b/c i can understand that (as annoying as it may sometimes be). i later got claustrophobic from all the drunk inconsiderate assholes bumping into me & pissing me off, so i went up to the balcony, where i had room to groove along w/ the band. the highlights of the show for me were jimi thing, dancing nancies & all along the watchtower. how many peope have covered that tune? (*dylan*, u2, dead, hendrix, dmb... any more?) peace... saul.Top Permalink
Ok i just finished reading todays postings and everyone --please mellow out-- people are right in saying that minarets is becoming like the phish net--all complaints and flames (phlames) .. this is a great thing we have here it gives all of us DMB fans a place to talk (about DMB) trade tapes get rides to shows, ask questions, get answers, meet people, etc, etc.. why waste everyones time by posting some negative shit that dosen't have anything to do with the band... has it they'll be playing two sets ( kind of bummed of the recent trend in short, text book shows) ..lets hope they decide to jammmmmm...it is the first anniversery (spelling?) of RTT and lexington (with washington and lee) is a place where dave and the boys played a lot before they meet RCA... O.K. here it is, listen up and shut your mouths. I'd like to start by saying that I cannot believe how stupid y'all act on this net. I haven't had a chance to read this net for about a week now. And just now when I read it, I was ashamed at all of the attitudes you people are displaying on this thing. and respect---that dave is very good and people ARE going to like him. Even if it is those 17 year old's that have showed up at shows lately like the vic in chicago. Music is a stange thing, people are arrogant and vain about bands that they deem amazing. I have always thought that it was just with the fans, but after becoming good friends with Jack O'neil and Cary Peirce, they discussed with me the concept of band assholeness, no not hte band itself for they couldn't care less, but the fans. Those that think that no one else can like the band. Now, do know about this shit, because I myself am up to my heels in assholeness, I have always been thouroughly angry with people who I didn't deem worthy to like "my band". And for all you fuckers out there who act like you are three years old, complaining about how popular he is getting, keep it to yourself, it's a known fact, and I am sure we all fell funny about his popularity, it's obvious to us all. posts about everything from complaints to other whines. Let's go back to talking about show that he has played in the past and recently. I enjoy dave and what cute, if not funny, things he says. But overall, quit complaining, I give so much credit and respect to everyone who HAS listened to him for a long time and have had to put up with all of this shit on the net. For those of you who have just gotten on it, sit back and read what's going on, this should be a network to talk about the band, and what it is doing now, not it's future, for noone can rally speculate on what is going to happen. I'll be the first to tell you guys. It was not spectacular, but it still was classic dave. It seemed that he was in a big hurry to take off to Europe and he virtually ran out of the place. I was lucky enough to be in the front row in a bar that holds about 300. Had some nice confrontations with him and was happy that he recognized me from Nantucket. (It probably helped that I had a Something Natural from Nantucket shirt on). He actually said to me, hey that's the man from nantucket, nice to see you again. Post-I had the oportunity to meet him on the street by The Hub in Nantucket last summer. Anyways among the interesting things that took place was a fan(my friend) saying something about spotlight and him replying, "spotlight, never heard of it." Kinda funny. Of course he opened up with O.S.W. and ended with Watchtower with nothing really new and invigorating except Get in Line. I did have the pleasure of asking him, in the middle of Jimmy Thing, to sing Yellow Subamarine, and he smiled and sang it. Carter was really hip, Lessard whined about his system, and Boyd zoned out when he wasn't playing (never onnce acknowledging the crowd). I guess I have really come to enjoy Pay for What you get, I was looking forward to Say Goodbye, but I thought that Pay For was equally amazing. Rusted Root was good again, it was almost halloween and some funny guy dressed up like a hooker got up on stage and danced his daylights out. But back to DMB, Dave was really friendly, and last but not least, Moore wasn't feeling really well. Stefan never says anything or shows much emotion. Maybe he lets his base speak for him, but being such a young guy, I comend him on not letting it get to his head. them this week, I'll be sending them tommorrow. Sorry---one more, you guys quit with the controversy over "being friends," quicklay and goodbye," and whatever else you guys call it. It used to be called Quicklay & Goodbye but now it is Say Goodbye. Someone out there, I don't remember, got offended by that title, that's to bad, because I have heard him call it that at a show. IT'S NOT SEXIST. "his wife and her lover." It's time that everyone stops complaining, good for the band, their popularity is no reason to put other people down. Ever. It would be sad if those that are inclined to complaining had no background. I think that if anyone, I'd give those at UVM,UVA,William and Mary, and Washington and Lee my ear, they are much more news worthy than most. then write me directly at, it's allgood@umich.edu if you don't then let's let the net go back to the basics. Alot of smiles and information on the best band in the world today.Top Permalink

Hi! I'm a newcomer to the dmb list as of today. I'm really excited that I found out about this list cuz I really love dmb as I'm sure as everyone else does also. I have a favor to ask of anyone and everyone. I go to James Madison University and I'm doing a 10 page research paper for english due in about a week and a half. My topic is on people who follow around bands and have made that their life. For instance people who followed around the Dead for years, or people who don't really live in one place but just want to be free to follow around the music they love. I hope I made enough sense. As you can see the paper has room for change, etc. If you have any neat ideas on what I can write about, feel free to send me info-pleaaassse! weeks ago. During the first half of the show, MTV filmed with camera dudes on T-shirt and runnin' 'round on stage. He even hit Boyd's violin at one point. Dave was getting visibly upset, often times mouthing the words "FUCK YOU" which I could make out all the way bavck by the board. Dave says at the show after a killer Watchtower..."Sorry itr took a while to recover from that big funky camera in my face. I'm still a damn country boy, and they stick this big friggin' camera in my face, and I'm like FUCK...FUCK" Then he played Cry Freedom. ======================================================BarryTop Permalink
If you've already replied, there is no need to do it again. Also the Edwin McCain offer is closed. I'll try to do it again soon. Gray Silence comes with no instructions! ---------- Reposted message ---------- I think the best way we can get Jambay to play the east coast is to spread the word as much as possible around here as well as everywhere else possible. To anyone who has never Jambay, they are a fantastic band who play all original music that completely rocks. In any case, I have been given a tape to spread. It is a clone of the master board from 6-14-93 Fox Theatre - Boulder, CO I have not listened to the whole tape yet so I cannot provide you with a setlist or exact times. It is on 2 120min dats, but I doubt it is 240min long. I will post more specifics later. If you want this tape, send me an email saying "yes i want it". I should also know whether you want a dat or analog copy and if you can make copies for others. I don't know if this will follow the usual tree distribution cycle & I will make that decision when I find out what kind of response I get. Silence comes with no instructions, GrayTop Permalink

has anyone seen a show at wait chapel before? if so, could you tell me what the seating arrangements are like (ie, reserved, floor/balcony, etc.). thanks a lot. dave Wait Chapel seats 2,379 people (i have a little pamphlet here on it) Im not sure how many of those are in the balcony however. The seats on the floor are arranged in 4 sections with three aisles between them. The seating is reserved but i heard that when WP played there, evryone got up and was in the aisles and pushing put towards the front, pretty much ignoring the reserved seating thing... but i wasnt there... there it is.. kristin Kristin is right. additionally, I think about 3/4 of the seats are on the floor. balcony seats won't be bad though, still good view and good sound. I saw widespread there and the "reserved seating" was pretty much ignored at least for the front half of the floor. see you thereTop Permalink

i do not usually post here or read through all the digests so if you have heard this allready than i am sorry. last night while sitting in front of the tv, watching mtv, the mtv news came on with a special report about the dave matthews band. they went on to describe the band and talk about their fan base that has built up over the years and so on. they talked to dave and boyd about randon stuff(touring, the new album, etc.) boyd talked about the bootlegs tapes and he also mentioned the net which i thought was pretty cool. they had so live footage and also talked to 2 guys who were pissed they did not get into the show that night. it was one of the shows with rusted root. at the end dave talked about how he compares being a headlining band to having sex, he likes it to last a long time or somehting like that. they said that the band is in europe right now and they will be returning soon and dave will be putting on a solo show at the irving plaza in new york sometime soon. well that is about it you may be able to catch it again at the end of the week on the week in rock.. mikeTop Permalink

might have missed what it was that bugged me out at 9:50 this morning before I went to class. There was a full 5 minute spot on the band done as a little MTV NEWS spotlight/update as opposed to part of the daily MTV NEWS program. It showed footage from the Athens show and interviewed Dave and Boyd and Boyd even mentioned US as a computer group that the fans formed (kudos to alex). It was pretty intense and I happened pop in a tape just in time. I'm not sure whether it will be on again but it is quite possible. Look for it! I envy all of you who are going to see Dave Mathews Band with Phish. I got to see DMB Thursday in Madison and Friday at the VIC in Chicago (front row center) Anyway, the set rocked and I am not just saying that because I met Dave Mathews before the show. Or that he geeked out before playing What Would You Say because I near spazzed when he mentioned what tune he was playing. Or the fact that Therese, the lady next to me was in a state of near euphoria because of the band and when I was saying to her that she looked exhausted, Dave heard us and handed over his bottle of water to her. Or the fact that he played Ants Marching right after she asked me if there was a tune that would put me over the top and I mentioned that tune. I guess there is something to be said about being front row center, a type of treatement and an inner connection with what is going on on stage that pulls you into the ZONE. Have any of you felt that way at a Phish show? I personally have never had the opportunity to find out. Rusted Root is something spectacular to groove to aswell. I will be able to offer a bootlegg sometime in the near future of the VIC venue. They definitely outdid themselves on Friday. DMB and Phish should be playing around the same areas at the same times if they are not playing together. Check your local listings. Thanx for the bandwith! I had to tell you all or I would have burst like a... (guess I am at a loss of words;)Top Permalink

I was flipping through the channels this afternoon (not much work to do) and holy shit--Dave Matthews on MTV. Past and recent posts of crowds at Dave shows and my experiences at otehr shows in general made me think about a few things suggestions about concerts... 1)IMHO the best place to be for a show is around the soundboard for many reasons... of us Dave fans like to do.. tapers... netters if you are so lucky (haha) 2)Don't get super high expectations up, not that Dave can't dish it out. Obviously we are going to these to see them live and dance and hang out and enjoy the scene. Even if it all sounds like a show you've been too, enjoy it anyway, its still Dave. I haven't seen him since Strawberry Banks, and if he played the same show at the Horse Center, I would still enjoy it. Reasoning for this...Lots of us have many tapes, old and new. Alot have the same songs and close to the same versions. We still keep the tapes and want more. We don't get a bootleg and just save the different stuff we hear on it. 3)Go with a bunch of cool good natured friends (ie find someone like Clare to hang with) This isn't meant to be rude to anyone or dictate anyone's actions, this is just how I enjoy shows...and I'm just kinda rambling... Expecting to see old and new faces at the Horse Center, obviously you know where I'll be, with pen and blanks in hand.... speaker wire they flash with the music, it's really cool... *-----------------------------------------------------------------------* |Chris "Boofy" Buford '96 | |cbuford@liberty.wlu.edu P.O.Box 322 | |Washington and Lee University Lexington, Va. 24450 | | | | "You know what they call a 1/4 pounder in france?" | | "No..." | | "A Royale with Cheese...." | | | | Ezekiel 25:17 | | | |v4.0 | *-----------------------------------------------------------------------*Top Permalink
totally kick ass! I have seen them a bunch of times in Charleston and they are always a good show. When Dave was in Charleston in July, Edwin McCain opened for him. It was a really good show, and Edwin came out to jam with them on Tripping Billies. Check out their CD if you can. Sorry I do not have any tapes, but I am always looking for some! had some good and bad expierances at concerts. Everytime I have seen him in Charleston, the crowd has moshed and generally acted pretty rude. But when I saw him here in New Orleans three weeks ago and later that week in St. Louis, the crowds at both concerts were great. Everyone knew Dave and they were really getting into it, but they were still nice and there was no moshing to any songs. I have never really thought of Dave as a moshing band. The concert in St Louis really kicked ass. Dave and the rest of the band were really into the crowd, and their long jam to Jimi Thing was the highlight of the concert. If anyone taped this show (10/21/94), please drop me a line. I would be willing to trade some stuff or pay for a copy- that was a really good night!Top Permalink
i've gotten a bit of personal mail saying i was too harsh about the quick lay and goodbye thing. i'd just like to apologize for that. it's just that i know how dave feels about the song, and i wanted to let everyone on the net know, too. i also forgot to tell the people not once again... humble apologies... and clare, it turned out pretty cool.... ____________________________________ "it is indeed a great gift of heaven\____________________________________ to possess...plain common sense." \ dave matthews band faq type --immanuel kant \ person and lyrics extraordinaire __________________________________ \_________________________________ \ rick thompson \ stu_rcthomps@vax1.acs.jmu.edu \____________________________________ Don't worry about it we still love you...thanks for being informative, isn't that what minarets.net is all about? their plan, but because of the way the music industry works. they see a good band and they see $. actually the bagman told me what they asked for in their record contract, like being able to record on their own label whenever they wish. DMB did'nt have to sign ,but why not? it gets their music out to more people. it spreads the PEACE Dave seeks. DMB doesn't have to be on MTV. but that reaches more people, too. Life is just trial and error so why not try everything?!!! i think DMB is on a strange quest for the other side. it could explode at any moment but such are the laws of nature. "Here we are,all of us,leaning heavy on each other..." MTV does mean that shows will be harder to see and will lose its homeiness, but Peace isn't meant for a certain group of people, its meant for the world. other people will start wiggin' on the Dave Matthews Band and you can sayTop Permalink
played with Dave Mathews. The Freddy Jones Band can really rip! I saw them for the second time in Vail this summer. They played in a three band show after Jaockopierce and before the Dave Mathews Band. They really ripped. They came about as close as you can come to stealing the show from Dave aTheir album "waiting for the night" is great, but nothing compared to the live show. hey everybody, LOOK, rick's going to post without flaming....yippee.... i've been reading all these posts about how the crowds at dmb shows suck, & i thought i'd jsut add my own opinion. i saw them in chicago (for the first time) on oct.28, & i had a great time. but -- i do think that the crowd kinda sucked. for a while i was down on the floor, & people all around me just wouldn't stop talking about all they had drank & all the dope they had smoked, & frankly, i jsut don't care. i'm not going to rip on people who sing all the lyrics along with dave, b/c i can understand that (as annoying as it may sometimes be). i later got claustrophobic from all the drunk inconsiderate assholes bumping into me & pissing me off, so i went up to the balcony, where i had room to groove along w/ the band. reading this i've come to an interesting conclusion. there's been talk on the net since the good old days when posts were so few and far b/w that it was easy to assume you weren't subscribed (as well as boring) about how much dave crowds suck. i can remember a show where dave finishes out ants marching by yelling into the mike "hey, quit fucking around...if you want to fight take it outside!!!" i think it was 7-27-93, with that infamous oteal jam during his way into larger venues. most people complain bitterly about this, but since i discovered phish, i've found myself "sharing in the groove" with no less than 4,000 other people and one thing i've noticed about larger venues is a larger sound. no muddling in the warehouse walls that were erected in 1907. the sound is fuller, more open, and you can stand back away from all the assholes up front. i've had enough experiences up front and in back to realize that the music is no different 10 ft from dave than it is 70 ft from dave. so back up, close your eyes, and listen to the music. there's definitely something alluring to the idea of being within spitting distance of carter's drum set, but is it really worth it? name good rockin' band that doesn't have assholes working their way through a keg of beer? and also, very few people can say that they've never gotten together with freinds and babbled for a bit on how wasted they are/were last night. the highlights of the show for me were jimi thing, dancing nancies & all along the watchtower. how many peope have covered that tune? (*dylan*, u2, dead, hendrix, dmb... any more?) sure, 16,000 cover bands who can't get their foot out the garage door. also, i've been told that dave's arrangement isn't as original as we'd like to think. apparently some folk artist from the late '80s did it that way. i can't think of his name right now, because i suck at names. also, dylan ____________________________________ "it is indeed a great gift of heaven\____________________________________ __________________________________ \_________________________________Top Permalink
it is titled 'say goodbye' you may not be aware that this soang has evolved and untertaken many different names. it's name.. at present.. is 'say goodbye'. if there is any disagreement with this i will give you the most recent date (this fall!) that this has been noted at. onther thing.. i'm not sure if you al lknow this.. but alex's word on facts is generally correct. i mean.. not to make certain individuals who feel compelled to correct him feel bad or anything..but, he is the founding memeber of this net. fouding memeber? well, aside from the horse latin, alex, you should the very first hints of this song were played at trax and floodzone in the middle of july, 1993. this being a period when dave was still doing acoustic sets to open his shows, he just came out, started playing this _really_ simple chord progression (i could teach it to my dog), and making up lyrics as he went along (something i'm not able to teach my dog), and always finished it out with the "say goodbye" that's very familiar to the song now known by that title. with a lack of anything better to call it, someone suggested either any-noise or anti-noise, but i don't know which one they use, or we use, or anybody uses. it's all noise to me. the song was then never to be heard from again until dave introduced a new song that he was calling quick lay and goodbye at zollman's pavillion in the fall of '93, though he seemed hesitant to use that title from the very beginning. i first heard the song on nov 2, 1993, at TRAX, where he played it not only during his acoustic opener, but during the break for encore while the rest of the band was pulling tubes and peeing. for anyone different each time. one is distinctly darker than the other, though i can't remember which. it took me a few listenings, but i after a while i realized that at the end he goes into the exact same chord progression on me. for the next several months, dave made it clear that he was looking for a better title for the song, and no matter what anybody suggested, he just didn't seem comfortable with it. something i was also worried about was that he was never going to work the song out for the whole band. when i found out that his northern shows from this august included a full band say goodbye, i was quite the happy camper. got my first listen of it as it's full born glory in the parking lot of 3rd st diner in richmond with boofy and clare. that was a keen night. at this point, i haven't heard it live, and i'm really hoping to see it next wednesday, but since i haven't seen a serious dave show since feb, not including lexington last spring, i'm about ready to take even true reflections (it's an original by boyd, by the way. i don't know if he or dave wrote the music, though. i'd guess it's dave because it's very stylistically dave). like live music, too. so let them go up front and beat the crap out of each other looking for the a place to stand. just chill out in the back and 1) enjoy the music 2)actually be able to remember it the next day. ____________________________________ "it is indeed a great gift of heaven\____________________________________ __________________________________ \_________________________________Top Permalink
john prine (angel from montgomery) is a folk guitarist who has been around a lot longer than i have. he's not terribly well known, but then again, he played the richmond classic amphitheatre in 1993, so he's not terribly ignored, either. i know that saying prine's name without saying his stage soulmates name is something of a sin, but like i said earlier, my mind is more fucked up than any tripping billies, even though i don't trip, so i can't remember right now. it's not nanci griffith, is it? maybe i should trip. it might clear things up in here. i don't really know much about daniel lanois. i know he's done some collaboration with brian eno, and i think he's produced a couple of u2's discs, but that's about it. dave _shows_ losing there hominess? hmmmm.... doubt it. just hang out at the sbd. not on the soundboard, mind you. you may learn secrets about the band and then bagby would have to kill you. just the way it works. i almost got killed once, but i traded him three garbonzo beans and a three day old mc'ds breakfast burrito, and he said he'd wait until he was in a bad mood. BUT...... (say, say...) dave _fans_ might start showing up _without_ their hominess, but that's because they sold their hominess to the mainstream devil, who showed up at dave shows long ago. but dave knows he's there, and dave knows that he can control the mainstream devil's heart, and the next thing he knows he's got a shitload of money, as well as a shiny new washburn guitar and a bunch of really cool people hangin out back with the tapers (blake, dan, boofy and the like. clare and i haven't quite figured out how to find the eject button on a tape deck, so we let them do it). When this message gets posted, fill out the included registration form and mail it to the address specified in the message. There's plenty of room to show the crowd what makes you you, whiile still staying in known territory. besides, it's fun as hell to sing. :) Watchtower's also been covered by the Indigo Girls, and Michael Hedges, (and phish & DMB -- winston salem, right?) now, when this show was posted in the tour dates file, it said, "Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds." is this confirmed? the ticket says, "Dave Matthews, with special guest Shannon Worrell." so, could anyone who knows tell me a)will tim really be there, Dunno- My ticket says Dave's name only, as does the Village Voice ad. However, Dave very rarely plays full acoustic shows without Tim, and I would tend to trust the minarets net much more than the Voice, and far more than Ticketbastard. person? Shannon Worrell is a folk singer, I believe also from the charlottesville area, but I'm not sure about that. Dave is particualrly fond of her music. He also occasionally sings backup with her, although IMHO, his contributions are far too minimal. There is also a cellist who appears with her, I believe his name is Matt something. I've only seen them once, but a friend of mine who is messing around in the studio with John Alagia seemed to know he'd be there, so I guess they play together regularly. Now then- I for one am a little jealous of all those Virginians who seem to know each other, trade tapes, etc. I propose a net gathering for us Northerners at the Irving Plaza show- perhaps inside the show, after Shannon plays, at a specified location. We could trade lists, make contacts, etc. We could also grab a beer at the Peculiar Pub on Bleecker St. after the show if anyone's interested (My second- favorite bar in the world). If you are going to this show and would be interested in such a gathering, email me directly. If there's enough response by Friday, I'll send out a message on the net with meeting time and place. Let me know if this sounds like a good idea.Top Permalink

all know!! I have an opinion I'd just love to share... As long as Dave doesn't use MTV to become bigger he's ok... MTV is only concerned with money and turns out more "one song" bands than anything else... Sure it's a great way to get known, but I think it can draw the wrong audience, a Sat./Ants kinda audience that changes their favorite band once a week... I'm happy for the success and I hope it continues, but MTV is a dangerous place! If he appears on the news that's cool, but if he makes a video of Sat., well I just don't think it's such a good idea.. Hell, The Beatles made it without MTV!!! Good Luck Dave.....Top Permalink
Please bear with me, but after all this "Say Goodbye" debating going on, Any-noise/Anti-noise song has the words "say goodbye" in it, but the music is only similar to certain parts of the song we hear today. Progression, progression, progression... On Oct. 15, 1993 at the Hampden Sydney Homecoming show, Dave played his first version of what is now known as "Say Goodbye". The only way I can say this is because this is what Dave himself said in the show... "So I took a holiday, I took a vacation for a week last week... and.. uh.. I wrote this song, but it's not really written yet, but I'm gonna play it anyway and I hope I don't fuck it up, but if it sounds like I'm fuckin' it up, just bear with me." The song he played is (musically) the same song he plays now. The words, well, we all know how to improvise, right? The idea's the same, but of all things, he does not say, "Say Goodbye" in the song even though earlier versions of the Any/Anti Noise song's chorus does. Wierd, huh? Oh, well. I think they're all pretty good versions of whatever song they are. (Did that make sense?) Oh, the I think the lyrics to the HS College version are in the lyrics file. There was one really great line that is no longer included in the song that came in at that slow part right before he starts screaming and its "Call, tell him you'll be late" If anyone's heard this version, do they agree?? It's pretty intense- he sounds like he's about to cry. Either that or he was losing his voice. I'm probably getting way too deep here. OK, later all... Katharine Adams 7 W. Preston St. Lexington, VA 24450 P.S. Rick, what show in fall '93 at W&L were you referring to?? I must've been there, but I'm not remembering this one very well. Oh, was it Halloween?? Yep, that must've been it. Hmmmm, of course I remember. I have a whole roll of eerie orange and black photos of Hootie and the Blowfish (who opened) and DMB from that night. Cool. Thanks for jogging my memory. Can you believe, Dave was wearing a white turtle neck and a black blazer. Go figure.Top Permalink

IS there any chance that the Va. Horse center will sell out? I'm too lazy to get tickets around Richmond, and would rather wait if possible. Did Phish/Dave even sell out? Response would be much appreciated. thanks, Scott.Top Permalink
I know this isn't Dave related so I'll keep it short. The DC Armory date (11/12) that Everything is playing is some sort of "festival" type thing with JudyBats as the headlining this show. It runs form 12-9 p.m. and tickets are available now. JudyBats are an incredible group from Knoxville-wonderful vocals and lyrics with beautiful melodies. The tickets are relatively inexpensive for a show with 6 bands that lasts all day. klongTop Permalink

extensive archive could possibly help me with. I have a really old tape from early early dave and I am looking for when and where it was created, it anyone knows that. The only IDENTIFIABLE characteristic of the tape is that Boyd sings Angel from Montgomery instead of Dave. Besides that, there is no other talking or other things on it to help. Well, anyway, here is the song If anyone has any info, it would be greatly appreciated! :) [MY FIRST POST! Hey Adam, Worrell is a friend of Daves from the Charlottesville area, she's been playing with Dave for a very long time, I have a couple of shows from along time ago where she sings Angel really well. She also has a disk out on bama rags too. It's definetly worth buying, Dave sings background vocals on two of the tracks. Just a quick reference.Top Permalink

Does anyone know any details about this show? Is there an opening act (RR perchance?) or anything else? I might be in the area for the show but the catch is that my plane doesn't arrive until 8:30 at night so I'd probably miss part of the show. If you can help me out with some info, I'd appreciate it. klongTop Permalink
